If you were told that the President of the United States had praised the frontrunner of the opposing Democratic party, you would probably tell me that I got that all wrong.
And yet, in an unprecedented interview with ABC News right before Thanksgiving, Bush said: “There is no question that Senator [Hillary Rodham] Clinton understands pressure better than any of the candidates, you know, in the race,” Bush declared. He called Clinton a “very formidable candidate” who understands the “klieg lights” that go with presidential politics.
Laura Bush, who participated in the interview, said Clinton’s experience as First Lady would be “very helpful” in the White House, adding: “you certainly know what it’s like. You know the pressure there is, you know the difficulties.”
It was only then that Bush quickly added: “I do believe our candidate will beat her, if she happens to be the nominee.”
This has got to be an historical first.
What was Bush thinking? Was he thinking?
Some possibilities:
· Perhaps Bush thinks Hillary would be the easiest Democrat for any Republican to beat.
· Karl Rove told him that because his poll ratings are so low it would not matter what he says.
· Rumsfeld told him to flatter Hillary because he wants the Iraq war to continue into the next century.
· Cheney wants to bomb Iran and Hillary would not oppose it.
· Condi Rice has presidential ambitions and needs a woman president to pave the way for her.
· Bush's Dad and Bill Clinton are friends and have travelled together, etc. Bush just wanted to make his Dad happy.
Stay tuned for this evening’s GOP gladiator fight. Count how many times the Republican hopefuls mention Hillary’s name.
