VP Night Speakers Named

| | Comments (0)

UPDATE: Jenny Backus, a spokeswoman for the Obama campaign in Denver, told me not to read anything about the vice presidential pick into the names on the speaking schedules for particular nights.

"We reserve the right to change the program all the way up until it starts," she said.

Democratic officials just released a slate of speakers for Aug. 27, which is the third day of the party's convention and the one on which the vice presidential nominee will speak.

Here's the list of speakers on the theme of "Securing America's Future":

  • Former President Bill Clinton
  • New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson
  • Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana
  • Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware
  • Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia
  • Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada
  • Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado
  • House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina
  • Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran who lost a 2006 House race
  • Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Pa., a veteran of the Iraq war.
If the vice presidential nominee was not surreptitiously named as simply one of a set of speakers that night, a sizable share of the folks considered to be on Obama's short list have been eliminated.

Speaking slots have still not been announced for:
  • Gen. Wesley Clark (I keep including him because, as has been pointed out several times on this blog, the theme of the night is his political action committee's slogan).
  • Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine
  • Most of the rest of the people in the world.
