ObamaBayh08.com Now Redirects to Democratic National Committee

The Web domain www.obamabayh08.com, which once redirected to Barack Obama's campaign Web site, now catapults the viewer to the Democratic National Committee's Web page, adding another small layer of intrigue to the question of whether Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh is alone at the top of Obama's veep list.

Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said the domain name is not controlled by the campaign or anyone affiliated with it.

There are any number of reasons to believe Bayh would make a formidable running mate for Obama, including his string of statewide victories in a traditional Republican stronghold, his experience on the Armed Services and Select Intelligence committees, and looking the part.
But there are a couple of red flags, too.

While the Democratic Party platform in 2004 made room for "people of goodwill" to disagree about the Iraq invasion, Bayh's vote in favor of the war is a bit off message for a nominee in Obama who says he has the "judgment to lead" based on his opposition to the war.

Here is Bayh's rationale for going to war: "I'm not sure we'll find a smoking gun here," he said before the invasion. "But if we wait until it's cocked and loaded, it's probably too late."

After voting for the final Senate version of an immigration overhaul in 2006, Bayh helped block a vote on similar legislation in 2007. And he voted to extend President Bush's warrantless wiretapping program.

But despite a relatively low party-unity score from CQ in recent years, Bayh is often a reliable vote for his party on the key votes of the day. In that way, he seems to fit the mold of the politicians Obama seems most fond of: Progressives who manage to win in red states.
