It was once unimaginable that Democrats could lose control of the Senate. But the unthinkable is now conceivable. Republicans need ten turnovers. Add up the competitive races and they are roughly three short.
Where could those final three longshot pickups be? Although still relatively safe Democratic seats, there are possibilities.
New York: If Republicans find a strong challenger, Kirsten Gillibrand could face trouble. Two words: George Pataki.
California: If devilish red-eyed sheep can help Carly Fiorina beat her GOP primary foe Tom Campbell and go on to defeat Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer, then here's the ad for the task (creepiest ad I've ever seen).
Indiana: Former Sen. Dan Coats looms as a GOP threat to Evan Bayh.
And now for something really odd: Vulnerable senators from the party in control handpicked by Majority Leader Harry Reid to publicly challenge their Democratic president and play the outsiders in an obviously choreographed session aimed at impressing anti-Obama voters. I suppose it's effective politics, but so totally trippy.

Ce grand malheur, de ne pouvoir être seul.
-La Bruyère
It was well said of a certain German book that "er lasst sich nicht lesen" --it does not permit itself to be read. There are some secrets which do not permit themselves to be told. Men die nightly in their beds, wringing the hands of ghostly confessors, and looking them piteously in the eyes --die with despair of heart and convulsion of throat, on account of the hideousness of mysteries which will not suffer themselves to be revealed. Now and then, alas, the conscience of man takes up a burthen so heavy in horror that it can be thrown down only into the grave. And thus the essence of all crime is undivulged.

and so it begins
"Brown's addition to the Senate will mark the end of the 60-vote majority Democrats have held for much of the past year and give Republicans enough votes to block legislation as they choose.......
Massachusetts Gov. Deval L. Patrick (D) is expected to sign an election certificate for Brown on Thursday morning, and the senator-elect would fly from Boston later in the day to be sworn in.
Senate Democrats say the swearing-in by Vice President Biden probably will happen at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Congressional Republicans said privately that seating Brown earlier could help them block Democratic nominees opposed by the GOP,..."

Bob, should I ever need to replace Rosemary's engine, it should be as simple as undoing four bolts, unplugging a bunch of cables, and lifting up the rest of the car above the sub-frame containing all the mechanicals including the transmission. Even the transmission linkage is by wire.
And I too would like seeing Jax switching out that engine. Every time he talks about his tugs, I think back to the Tugboat Annie stories serialized in the Saturday Evening Post.
I reckon she must have been his wacky Aunt Annie.

I am just a poor boy. Though my story's seldom told, I have squandered my resistance for a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises: all lies and jests. Still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest. When I left my home and my family I was no more than a boy, in the company of strangers in the quiet of the railway station running scared; laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters where the ragged people go---looking for the places only they would know.

"Democrats protect backroom deals"
"But there is no visible movement to erase a Medicaid deal with Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) that she has said is worth $300 million, three times the amount of Nelson’s agreement.
Or to strike a line item that exempts Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan from a 40 percent tax on insurers that provide expensive health plans. Or to remove a provision that sends an extra $500 million in Medicaid funding to Massachusetts and $600 million to Vermont for being leaders in providing health insurance to their residents."

As for dreams.... I would never tell anyone not to pursue his/her dreams. But if the government is involved, one should realize it's going to take a really really long time.
"They" have wanted to build a regular train from Logan airport in Boston to Manchester airport in NH for over 20 years. "They say it would allow some in Mass. to choose the NH airport which would alleviate some of the crowdedness in Logan (patd... I know you know what I'm talking about). And allow NH residents to get to Logan when making overseas flights. It looks like "they" may finally break ground in a few more years. The history of this project is so convoluted it could make one barf from dizziness.
Obtaining the land was one thing. The hardest thing was doing an impact study for every town this rail would cross. And that means working with local governments. Small town local governments. Any one who wants to see the best example of over bloated egos needs to go to a small town selectmen's meeting. And show up as an outsider with a big project... and money. It'll give the 3 stooges a run for their money.
Doesn't mean it can't be done. But it won't be tomorrow.

It is all because of that democracy thing. You have to have the community and stake holder involvement in the process because you have to let the Dons of this word feel like their voice is being heard.
So Don gets up makes long convoluted statements that have little to do with reality and everybody nods like it is important. Why? Because Don and his buddies vote and we can't have real voters mad at you.
I'm sure in your dealings with the public you have met Don before.

Morning,
Just some observations:
1. Stewart is getting great reviews for going n FOX. He is pushing the engagement tactic and Indies like that.
2. Public gave great points to Obama for Q and A, but WH now says Q and A is over. Really? That is pretty stupid and Indies don't like that.
3. F-22 decision is coming back to haunt as is the decision to KSM trial in NYC. For the F-22 issue, see three day old post at Slate or read aviation weekly. The scandal is what DOD and Gates knew before they ditched the F-22. New Russian T-50 was a surprise? LOL.....China and India want it. I wonder why if it is so obsolete in it's role to play in future..
4. Iran is Feb sleeper. Don't be surprised. Why do you think Ahmadinejad made a desperate and bogus offer to send uranium out of country? Sure, he wants to send animals into space....
5. China is feeling some Hillary love. You don't negotiate without leverage and Hillary is piling it on. Good for her.
6. Boxer is terrible. I suggest people take a look at Judicial Watch List.
7. If Democrats don't engage, Q and A and split the Republicans wide open, they are even more pathetic strategists than I suspect........

What gets me is that the Republicans who created this massive job loss and destruction of the middle class are able to get the people they are screwing over to vote against their own self interest thanks to fear and prejudice.
It's getting really dumb out there in conservative land.
Of course greedy Democrats voting their own self interest doesn't help. Make it, "it's getting very very dumb out there in voter land".

Tony, people called her office and the phones were jammed, or so she said. O'Keefe says he went to see if phones were working and film them ringing with no one answering. He says he has that on tape as well as no evidence he had "bugs". Let the tape play....If this ends up true, she will have egg on her face too and people who tried to make this Watergate will have to eat their own rants including Olberman and Maddow as well as he NYT.
I don't condone O'Keefe's illegal tactics when used, but people are furious with what is going on. O'Keefe tried to exploit that anger and show she didn't want to answer her constituency on the phone....

The independent party will have just as many different shades; as the Dems have, but once they become indies. the won't go back to the hypocrisy that they see on both sides.
Sen Feinstein was pushing the wars again Sunday...she sounded just like a Republican.....she was pushing the terror alert button. she sounded just like Cheney/Bush crowd.
I see that Dodd is a real model for the D's...going out like he came in...a hypocrite...both parties are mirror images of themselves...cept the R;s are not hidding anything from the public...they just say :we are greedy" and don't give a rats ass if you know it...the D's can't hide their Greed anymore...Obama, and Dodd, Frank, and all of the rest have blown their cover.....yep there is hope for those that see the two part's as one.........go Nader...

I see a problem with George Pataki as a candidate...when he was governor, he thought it was more important that his friends and political patrons make money off the rebuilding of the WTC than actually rebuilding that site.

This is something to share with anyone you know who is "tired" of President Obama blaming W. for the current economic conditions. They think one year is more than enough time to fix things, what were they saying at this point in time?
"The problems we inherited were far worse than most inside and out of government had expected; the recession was deeper than most inside and out of government had predicted. Curing those problems has taken more time and a higher toll than any of us wanted."

If we have a divided government now that Obama really missed his chance ( and our's) to pass some of what he promissed....will he be better off, looking like a fighter, than like a pres. that can't even get his own party in line ....
Jack, Ok, U got me.!! Acutally I only like Ronn Paul for some of the things that he is for...not for some of his stances, like womens right to choose and a cpl of other things, but let's face it....he has been right more than wrong about almost everything....including the wars.!!!
He doesn't stand a chance, either does Nader, of Kucnich, but they are fun to put out there...wait til Max gets back. I was going to say McKinney but that way too much...he really goes nuts about her.!! All that said...I do agree with you, that we need to find some sort of solution about all of this.!
I Don't know who ; or how; but I do think that there is a chance for someone to take advantage of how mad the middle class are....I wish that my guy Prof. John Haglin of the Natural law party was still around...he would tap into all of this discontent. Is too early to run Al Franken for POTUS???? I see him, or someone like him...from either party...to give us that kind of hope for us...he would take from the Rich, and greedy, and get it to where it is fair for everyone....I am all for making a very nice profit...that is what it is all about...but what is going on, and has been going on, we don't stand much of a chance; against the corps that make all of the laws.....we are slaves; but maybe this internet thing can get us free???
This is what a real third party looks like; they had a ground roots organization, with elected officials in almost all of the states; but we did no listen to him, and chose to pick a blued, or red jersy and play the games that got us to this point....bottom, bottom line..it is all our own faults....

"President Barack Obama told a bipartisan group of governors that he was following a "non-ideological approach" to energy that included clean energy and efficiency but also offshore drilling for oil and gas, new nuclear power plants and new technology that would allow for continued use of coal without emissions of heat-trapping gases. The reason that we don't have a third party, a real solution to most of our problems, is that we ignored, and missed the opportunity.!! Now with the new law allowing all corps to even further influence the way we get our officials elected...what are the odds for more people to do what Franken did; or for someone else that the corps don't back-up with all of their $ I just don't know how people thought that Obama would be different.! This organization had to drop off the political arena (they did good for three elections ) b/c of the lack of $ to sustain themselves. He is still around....take a look.!!!!!

I think what we are seeing is that the American people aren't stupid, They know that the old ideas aren't working , yet both parties are stuck in the past. Obama , for all his mantra about change is just as stuck as the rest of them.
The politician that wins in the next election is the one that can best convince them that they have new workable ideas.
At this moment I don't see anybody on the horizon that can come in and be your knight on a white horse.
All the people you listed as 3rd party alternative are just as stuck in their own version of the past.

Now that we know what a real third party looks like. How do we get one? Lets start here....already in place, all they have to do, is get the money to compete.!!! and for people to stop voting against their own interest...last 30yrs are proof the both sides have gone to the dogs...scratch that..tot he Wolves-corps...and picking one side against the other...is just making us the Sheep.!!

Jack,
I posted my last one before I re-freshed..Agreed with you're last post...but don't we need a Knight in shining armor, or in a rusted garbage can...just as long as we-I don't fall into the in group, versus the out groups.....they have us doing this..and I won't play that.!!! but U r right, and I will always be on the look out for the messiah...or messiaher...i would have voted for Hillary.!! XR...U R never around for the Lunch call......it's going to cost U today...so get out you're bucks....heard that you still have the very first one, that u made.....

From what I've been reading the market dropped through a techical barrier so the technical traders are selling.
There is the issue of China and it's realestate bubble seems a lot of folks were putting a lot mof faith in China being our savior. Kinda shows the intellegence level of those folks in the stock market.
I had a very good december and I have yet to fall 10% but I do need to think about culling a couple of stocks and taking my profit with the next up turn. I may go a little into cash with some of the 401k.
My father in laws house that we put on the market last week has been getting a lot of traffic. no offers yet.
It will give me a good idea of the local market.

As you folks may have noticed, I'm gone a little guitar crazy of late. If you have never hear "Cluster Pluck", perk up your ears. These are the best of the country guitarists playing bits in several studios, engineered into one incredible piece of music. He's not credited (not sure why since it's on my copy), but Keith Urban was in on this as well.

Well, as I suspected, I do have pneumonia and am so sick of coughing! My neighbors are going to run in and kill me soon. I've had one z-pak which hasn't seemed to help, but the doc says it takes a while to get rid of pneumonia. I did convince her to give me another antibiotic, tho.
When I was young, I used to say that a good way to feel good was to be sick, and when it was over I would feel like a million bucks. Not anymore. This is perhaps the first really bad thing I've noticed re being old.
I haven't been interested in checking any links and I know I'll be sorry. I have seen fiorina's ad - I really can't stand that woman.
And Meg Whiman's radio spot says we should help those who need help but shouldn't make welfare a way of life - we need to find a way to get people off welfare. WOW. How come nobody ever figured that out? I really don't like her, either.
I don't like stingy mean little hearts.
I also felt the 6.0 quake we had this am - was lying on my side in bed and the bed moved from side to side and for once I had verification. It was hundreds of miles away in the ocean.
Gray Davis wanted to ONE TIME triple car registration

I've done a couple of loans for some Lockheed employees and they don't seem too enamored with the F-22...they love the F-16 and they say don't worry about the F-35...
I almost ran off the road last week watching a test flight of the F-35...that sucker can dance like a video game fighter and I don't think you need to worry about it getting into service...
If I can find out when they do another flight like that, I'll try to get some video because it can do maneuvers at such slow speeds it looks like it's defying gravity...

Jamie,
Spot on.While working today Grace of course had FOX on,what a bunch of lying twits they have on! Foxes Megan interviewing this Republican strategist who just kept saying over and over that the Dems healthcare bills are a big government takeover of healthcare,LIE! I told Grace she was just lying, she believes it! I told her i wish everyday for a government take over of healthcare, so why then don't i support the Dems current healthcare bills? Grace told me I only read Dem healthcare info so I'm misinformed,my god were fucking doomed..Grace cleans with me for a living and is a staunch Republican,go figure!

Bad news from the DoJ. But if the DoD will only kidnap and torture yoo, haynes, bybee, gonzales, addington, feith, rumsfeld, cheney, and bush, until they confess that they and the entire republican party are members of alqaeda out to destroy America and all that is good in Creation, I think justice can still be achieved. I wish we could have a real Indy choice.I think its becoming more and more of a possibility. I just wish President Obama will start living up to all the Hope And Change! I was talking to a Dem client of mine today and he was saying poor Obama isn't being treated well by Republicans and i agree, but he wanted the job!! What did Holden Caulfield do for the rest of his life ?
My guess is that he eventually figured out that pushing papers in the insurance company's claims department wasn't going to get him the kind of luggage stickers he wanted, so he went back to school and got his MBA. Then, he shuffled group insurance portfolios until he got his law degree and passed the bar. The mouthpiece degree got him a Jr VP position at Titanic Indemnity, where he showed how ruthless he could be, changing the terms of contracts with impunity. Headhunters lured him into a Sr VP seat at Collosal Casualty, overseeing Ops where he successfully talked employees out of raises and bonuses, and shareholders out of dividends. After a few yearsof showing how callous and conniving he could be, the BoDs at Megassurance asked him to be their CoB and CEO, and allowed him a free hand to cheat the hell out of every employee, stockholder, and customer. Oh yeah, and along the way he married a few times, and he thinks there may have been a kid somewhere in the picture.
Today, Holden Caulfield is estimated to be worth at least $9B!LL!ON. Still hale and hearty at age 78, Caulfield still whines as loudly as he did in his youth. "Those damn poor people", he saysabout his former customers, employees, and stockholders, "make me want to heave. They and their shitty, unsightly, old luggage."

Mickey Spillane was a pretty good scribbler for a Jehovah's Witness. In my callow youth, I was impressed by the similarities between 'My Gun is Quick' and Euripides' 'Medea'. The scene where the gal puts on Medea's wedding gift :
"The delicate robes
Had fangs to gnaw her delicate tortured flesh...
The gore
Dripped from her head's crown flecked with blended fire.
The flesh flakes melted from her bones."
-Euripides
The finale of 'My Gun is Quick' :
"His hair smoked, puffed up in a ball of flame and he screamed again.....
He was still screaming when I pulled the trigger."
-Spillane
