GOP Backfires in Baltimore

| | Comments (78)

Inviting the President to the House Republican retreat was a dumb move. Obama scored lots of points, while the GOP gained nothing. For the White House this was a prime opportunity for a second leg of the "reset" agenda unveiled in the State of the Union Address.

While the President repeatedly touted bipartisanship it's clear he did not show up for question time in Baltimore to engage a round of political togetherness. For starters, if the White House had been serious about hardnosed deal making, the session would have been closed to the media as is done when Obama meets with Democrats.

Making it public should have been the first clue for Republicans that Obama's team was setting them up. Obama was there to help himself, and he sure did it.

Republicans thought this would be a chance to show a skeptical public that they too have ideas. But Human Events Editor Jed Babbin, a leading conservative, writes, "The televised event did accomplish the small Republican objective, but it was lost amidst the points Obama scored."

How ironic that Republicans provided his best forum yet to change the Washington game to his favor.

  8. Thanks Craig!! I have fixed what I could with the letter and spent the last few hours on the phone with Thom. I can't believe how freaking stupid those historians are- claiming that the 94th "always moved into areas other divisions had accupied for a week or more. Unbelievable.

Here is Thom's acct, which is now in my letter and will send you a copy Craig. I think Thom gave those so called historians a fine history lesson.

“We were at the Front and approaching Ludwigshaven, about 5 miles short of it, when the American captured planes lead by a Messerschmitt flew over us, and we abandoned our convoy and headed for the ditches. We were ordered to hold off and go in and take it (Ludwigshaven) in the morning, so we bunked out in some nearby houses, they decided to let the tanks go through, but they found that the tanks had been slaughtered. We then went through Ludwigshaven and the Germans had retreated, and it was outside of Ludwigshaven, where we came across this camp. . After we were there for a couple of hours we were then ordered to leave as the medical people were expected to arrive within a short time to take care of the freed prisoners.
Shortly thereafter we were reassigned to go north to Velbert, in the Dusseldorf Krefeld area. I recall vividly the truck convoy from where we to the Dusseldorf area, a distance of about a hundred miles. At that time the War was over and we were administering the peace, one of the duties was to protect the German farmers during the night from being slaughtered from the wandering freed Russian displaced persons. ”

“ The War ended,in May, this was well before that, because we were the ones going in to take Ludwigshaven and there were no American troops ahead of us then. When the American tanks passed through us, they were halted and crucified at the fringes of Ludwigshaven. There was certainly no one ahead of them and we during the daylight hours went in to Ludwigshaven to find it abandoned. The tanks that passed through us, were completely demolished by being ambushed by the defending enemy troops in Ludwigshaven. Immediately thereafter the Germans abandoned Ludwigshaven and we went through the town which was empty of any human beings and continued on to when we came upon the camp, a few miles outside of Ludwigshaven.“

  10. "Unfortunately, our monetary system – including its domestic and international components — is broken. It has been providing excess money supply and credit growth on a global basis which has promoted one bubble after the other and which has encouraged bankers and everyone else to take excessive risks. A surfeit of liquidity and debt combined with financial deregulation reeking of moral hazard. What a system! When the bankers are right they keep their rewards. The government absorbs the losses when they are wrong. You can’t blame the bankers for picking the ripe fruit from the trees that the politicians have planted."

  11. Mqw-man,

At first when I saw the meeting between O, and the Gop's, I was going to turn it off immediately....the remote wasn't near me, ( hate when someone moves it..grrrr) but I had to go alllll the way to the other table by the corner...any way, I started to listen, and ended up liking what I heard; very much.!

I knwe that he was getting in their face, and liked it; specially when the Texas creep got to his long winded jab at Obama. He was cool, and waited for the bs to stop, and then he let him have it...now this is what I have been waiting for...someone to give rebuttals to the gop taling points.!!!

He pointed out that he came in with an 1.3 deficit from Bush from the start, and an 8 trill for the next t en...in plain and simple English...this Independent liked him for the very first time...and I see that he fowled up on this this am.

If the D's were smart, they would stick to the points made by Obama at that meeting..and stick to the promises of the 32 bil for small biz; thats all, just get the economy going again, and then see what's they can get done after-wards.....I have talked to some others that feel the same. There is one thing tho.....he had better deliver this time.......

    It was....Greed....also plain and simple.!!!

I remember when an Apartment owner asked me to give her an estimate on her foundation leaks...very nice building, but it leaked in all 4 walls....she had 7-10 bids' that she showed me...some ridiculously low, and then one was super high. I gave her what I felt was a fair price, and then tacked on 10% for making me go out on a Sat. afternoon, to give her a proposal....

Funny thing, she had a cpl of bibles (three i think ( and a whole bunch of pics of my brother Jesus. (we call him Jessie) I told her that if she did go with us..that it would not be until the following Monday....cos Sunday was a day of family, and church for me...she signed the contract, and I was there digging the very next day, Sunday,...told her that I went to Sat night Mass.....did not want her getting more bs, by anyone else, and getting ripped off.......the Banks and the ins corps....got very greedy is all....Oh and they are very religious aren't they.!!!!!

    mqw,

You're right. It's too bad that the great middle class has no clue about how close to economic collapse our country and the rest of the world was at the end of the Bush administration and the beginning of Obama's. Having read "Too Big to Fail," and excerpts from Hank Paulson's new book, it is pretty apparent that had Bush (at the end) and then Obama not acted as they did, that very middle class would have been substantially wiped out. Unemployment at 25%, housing far worse than it is now, and investments such as retirement plans worth fifty-cents on the dollar or less.

Yes, the public is pissed. They are also woefully underinformed on the facts.

  19. Well Craig, I suspect you are right as far as Baltimore, but Indies aren't impressed with just a one round fight. I think both sides ought to get sucked into this public debate and you won't bait Republicans if real compromise isn't dangled. Dems won't get nibbles if they just want PR points. They must really engage and carve out a bipartisan consensus. If the Democrats aren't serious, Indies will punish. If they are serious and Obama acknowledges the weak answers he has for some questions while pushing his smart points, Dems win in the end even though the compromise disappoints some Liberals. will also.

That is the strategic question and I say broadside the GOP with a real engagement. Track them down into FOX Studios. I see CQ headlined the hand Brown is opening. If Democrats don't exploit it, they are fools.....

  23. Im still not convinced that we had to bail out anyone.!! they bluffed us into thinking it was the end of the world; I would have liked to have seen their cards.....

    Mqw.

I find that most people are mad at congress also; at both the D's and the R';s. I don't think that the R;s are going to make up many seats tho' for the same reason. Im hoping to see people like Dodd, Rangel, Frank..Fienstien over at the senate; all go, along with any Republican's that are similar in ethics.......Many in both party's need to go.!!!

From the not to recent past....

"The reality is that today Wall Street owns the US Congress lock stock and barrel. Congress will do nothing, even if hell freezes over, unless the American electorate take the time and reclaim their nation that has been sold to the financial industry. Thomas Jefferson must be turning in his grave to see a nation and an electorate that have gone to sleep and are not heeding his warnings about the danger of banks and bankers: "

Our nation should face up to a number of well-constructed myths before inequities and divisions between ordinary taxpayers and Wall Street titans unfolds into a calamity that endangers the future of the nation:

    1. Wall Street in its present form is essential for the prosperity of the US economy.
    2. The talent on Wall Street is irreplaceable and their pay is deserved.
    3. Bailouts along these lines were essential for economic recovery.
    4. Wall Street has learned its lesson, supports financial reform and is sure that the fiasco will not be repeated.
    5. Congress can do nothing about Wall Street bonuses and pay structures.

"The government and the financial industry frightened the general public with threats of impending economic doom and socialism if bailouts were not handled their way.

One-by-one negotiated bailouts - the method adopted by Treasury - are slow and unfair. Why was Bear Stearns bailed out and Lehman Brothers allowed to collapse? How do we ensure a good deal for the public in negotiated bailouts, especially given the revolving-door culture described above? Bailouts lead to more bailouts because they give an incentive to bankers to take excessive risks in pursuit of extraordinary rewards. Most importantly, after bailing out the big financial firms, we find ourselves saddled with firms that are still too big to fail and with no easy solution. In fact, because of the mergers and takeovers that the government supported, our financial institutions are now even bigger than before. We have done very little to avoid a worse catastrophe in the future.

A ShelterBox response team has set up the camp for up to 6,000 refugees.

Whatever gains that come will be determined by the follow up. Obama has the advantage, but Republicans are going to look silly running away from more public engagement....

"I think I've found a new calling in my life . . . When I see people in pain and peril (as they are in Haiti), I need to go help them."

    A couple of things
First the Declaration of Independence is an idea so it can't be gotten rid of.
Its basic idea is we have the right to govern ourselves and when that is not happening then we have the obligation to change it. A very powerful and controversial idea even after 250 years.

As for the constitution(the bill of rights is part of the constitution) and Glenn Beck.
Beck is so dependent on the constitution to protect him as he rants that if it were not there then he and his followers would be among the first to be stood against the wall and shot.

Unfortunately for me none of them are worth watching working or not.

Tub in, sink in, insulation above ceiling in, area where door to bedroom will go down to the framework for cutting ... Too much fun

  62. Jack, we watch as the regime in Iran implements their version of 1984. Recently in that country, we see a great example of Newspeak: "Nothing" now means something http://ncr-iran.org/content/view/7724/1/

It would be great if Iranians were able to have any control over what their regime is attempting to accomplish in and outside of the country they hold hostage. Israel may have eliminated the central Arm Merchant for Hamas, but Quds is out in force and no doubt the clock is ticking.

As for the Palestinian side, Clinton has the map. Settlements are relative to the deal we actually struck.

Doublespeak was the point of the link above as Abbas declared he had stopped hate broadcasts on PA controlled media and within their educational programs, but the worst sort of racism exists in full view.

Hamas, if you can imagine it, is far worse than the PA allowed hate speech above. I just placed that obscenity next to the idea that reciting the Declaration of Independence can get you killed in some American localities. I sure know areas where one could get killed just standing on the corner. That, I think is another issues, yes?

Now if your point was that reading aloud the Declaration of Independence in Tehran could get you killed, you are undoubtedly correct. Perhaps I misunderstood you....

  63. "As for the Palestinian side, Clinton has the map. Settlements are relative to the deal we actually struck."

There were some phony-baloney maps made up of the Mexican territories ...just before they said "Go West Young Man"

    Those boarder lines keep expanding.!!

  64. By the way, Glenn Beck is an actor. A rather bad one at that. Although Franken is a Senator, I rather doubt that Beck could survive as an actual candidate. Colbert is far more viable, even when he's not serious. Beck certainly won't be able to cry during a debate or use a chalk board..

The real Republican line breaks between hard conservatives and conservative centrists. The ultra conservatives have been successful through Beck And Rush to drive hard conservatives to toward the Tea Baggers and oust moderates, but two things keep that from happening.

One, the larger Indie component of Tea Baggers are not ultra conservative, making Tea Baggers as a group -not much other than publicity. They will crumble as a Third Party, nor can they blackmail the Republican Party. Ironically, Brown could probably excite Tea Baggers more than Beck,

Two, as Indies and moderate Democrats force engagement and compromise (if they can), the Republican centrists are the only weapon Republicans have at the polls outside ultra red country.....

I think Congress will give NASA more money (not that Manned Space Flight needs be confined short term to the moon).......Obama blew his JFK moment....

Or maybe we'll just watch others on the moon soon enough.

I've noticed when it come to Mexican boarders they are mostly relative.
You know , Jaun has a house and he rents out the basement to his cousin Jose and little brother Poncho.

  68. Not true Solar. Clinton and Israel had extensive meetings in which decades of mutual understanding was formed into an actual map. You seem to indict many administrations and agreements.

There were a few areas on that map where expansion would continue and that any land Israel so annexed would be compensated with Israeli land or monies. These apply to historic Israeli areas such as Gilo. The vast majority of settlements in the West Bank would have been abandoned and all in Gaza were, by Sharon. That merely gave rise to militants. Unfortunately, many Palestinians want the land, but not the peace.

Now this map we are talking about is a decade old. Arafat rejected it although Abbas has said he would consider it. Nowhere has the US position become during the last decade that settlements are permanent. Israel voice what exceptions there were a decade ago. It was Rabin's wish that this land for real peace come to pass. Hillary knows exactly what the division was going to look like, but Arafat launched a bloody response.

No President of Israel will allow simply give back the land while the hate goes on, Iran arms militants, even AQ imports violence. Do those Israeli is asked to negotiate with as a majority, sworn to the destruction of Israel? Hillary knows this basic pot hole while media focuses on settlements.

For now Saudis and Egyptians, Jordanians and others see the real struggle with Iran who now fuels obstructionism in the peace process and radicalism abroad. Arab leaders are so frustrated with the Palestinian position they have moved beyond it to strategic issues. There are prosperous cities in the West Bank born from security. We in the West, rather than vilifying everything Israel, must sadly acknowledge that many Palestinians haven't begun to put down their hatred no matter the crimes or mistakes of Israel. Right now they have their map and it is only Palestine......

    that is a gross exaggeration.

  72. Jack,

Got u. Yes it works that way a lot.....funny there is a big house a few blocks from me....the owner refuses to rent it out to anyone, other that some illegals..say's that they pay on time..and keep the grounds clean...cut the grass, and even shingled (patched) the roof where it was leaking...I don't think that he know that there are 9 people living there, or doesn't care...

Although I was doing a riff on your typo

I think it is an immigrant thing.
This neighborhood used to be Polish and a lot of these old houses have a little apartment in the basement.
And listening to stories from my father and how he went to California in the 30"s it was much the same.
One cousin writes home and tells another one about a job. the cousin moves out there knowing he has a place to stay until he can get on his feet.

  74. Jack,

I don't know what Obama is going to do about the immigrant problem...it's a tough one tho.!! I don't think that we can take anymore people. Maybe we should legalize pot.....lots of good things can happen if done...I don't know of anyone that is going to stay at home, if their families are starving ....I don't think for a moment that Canadians would either...just that Fn Mexican pres. keep stealing that country blind...the last one Fox was ok...but the one before him...Salinas....it will take a long, long time for them to recovers from his corrupt admin..and his family...the shits.!!!
