"Just as philosophical, I suppose, as whether a discredited story that's been killed is still a news story if it lives online."
"Obama to use backdoor taxes to hit middle class? Oops, not true."
-- Laurent Belsie in the CSMonitor
All of this points out one of the many things that suck about social networking. The Economist has a special section on the new 'media' in its current issue.
They think more of it than I do.

I have to go choose a new governor tonight.
My guy, former Sen. Mark Dayton, seems to be the prohibitive favorite. The chances of republicans retaining this seat are only slightly above zero. Dayton is a tough campaigner, well-known in every corner of the state. The most likely republican candidates have little history outside of their small home towns and no history of interest in anything but cutting taxes for the Croesus family & preventing rape victime from getting abortions in MN.

A native american chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin strip of elk rawhide and gave it to the chief, telling him to bite off, chew, and swallow one inch of the leather every day. After a month, the medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief shrugged and said: "The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."

Reuters withdrew a story Tuesday that suggested Obama would cut the deficit through backdoor taxes on the middle class."

Bob, angry is when Republican campaign donors find out that their contributions aren't tax deductible. I mean _really_ angry.

Cbob- thanks for the words of encouragement, truly. Guess I didn't clarify and should though- I don't often cry out of frustration, just being overwhelming by the immensity of their actions, suffering, devotion, goodness, love. Been reading the article you posted, thanks, enlightening. Was wanted to mention that I've been dreading the day that we would start to see the exodus of the aide. Hope no one follows the carrier anytime soon.

I read the article you linked for Solar. There were a lot of apples v oranges to the story. It claimed there was no shortage of business loans and tried to prove it by telling how consumer borrowing had fallen.
Small business borrowing is no doubt down. And in some sectors it is probably next to impossible to get a loan without a lot of collateral.
Like in the housing market. Just imagine going to a banker and tell him you have this great house that you can flip.
But the FDIC has also made it harder to get loan because they require banks to carry a larger reserve and they are charging higher fees to cover the cost of failed banks.
Also, in time like this the bank examiner will often tell a bank that they are carrying too many loans for a certain type of business and they need to have a more balanced portfolio.
Which results in weird things like the time I sold out the farm because I was having trouble getting credit. Then a month or two later I got a couple of contracts that meant I needed equipment. The same bank would lend me $5000 for equipment on my signature when they wouldn't loan me $500 for feed for the cattle that would more than pay back the loan.
The banker made sure it was a business loan not a farm loan he needed business loans in his portfolio.
So that could be some of Solars problems right now.

Will anybody believe me if I say I've declared a moratorium on politics until 2012?
In my defense, allow me to say that while we do have a gubernatorial race coming up this year, our lone viable Dem candidate, state senator Roy Herron, decided to run for John Tanner's House seat. As for the GOP, don't EVEN get me started on the prospect of Zach Wamp in the governor's mansion--although Phil Haslam (mayor of Knoxville and Pilot Oil heir) might be moderately easy to stomach.
2012 will not only be a new presidential cycle: it will also mean that our junior GOoPer senator, Bob Corker, is up for re-election--and hope springs eternal that either a Dem or a true moderate Republican will mount a viable challenge to him.

And let others do for you.

COLUMBIA — Legislators are considering adding more domestic violence protection for teens, but the bills before them exclude homosexual couples.
The proposals would require public schools to help educate students about dating violence and add another layer of protection for heterosexual teens in the criminal domestic violence laws.
Sarah Warbelow, state legislative director for the Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign, said it is not surprising to see a continuing anti-gay stance from South Carolina, following the state’s 2006 assertion that marriage is between one man and one woman.

Sorry, for not answering about the headstone . Next time I go , I'll ask the folks out there. We noticed that it was a lot cleaner than last Sept. on his birthday . Larry guessed that it was because tomorrow is Feb. 3rd, which means he was about to unplug for the last time just about now, 51 years.
