"The Iraq war inquiry's public hearings have begun in London with top civil servants and a former spy chief giving evidence on the conflict's origins.
The investigation, looking at the whole period from 2001 to 2009, is expected to last months, with a report not out until after the next general election.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair will be among the future witnesses."

"Rupert Murdoch is considering a tie-up with Microsoft which would see the technology group pay for exclusive rights to content from his stable of newspapers, including the Times and the Sun, to attract visitors to its Bing search engine.
As part of the deal, Murdoch would prevent stories from his News Corp outlets appearing on rival Google News, despite the fact that the service provides the bulk of web traffic for sites such as timesonline.co.uk.
The talks with Microsoft, which are at an embryonic stage according to News Corp insiders, are part of Murdoch's drive to create new online revenue streams and bring an end to what he sees as the theft of his content by large web companies such as Google"

"Obama in His Labyrinth"
"HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Before coming up to Canada’s Atlantic provinces, where the nicest people in this nice country are said to live, I found myself seated next to Henry Kissinger at a New York dinner and asked him how he thought President Barack Obama was doing.
“He reminds me of a chess grandmaster who has played his opening in six simultaneous games,” Kissinger said. “But he hasn’t completed a single game and I’d like to see him finish one.”
I thought that wasn’t a bad image for Obama’s international gambits, and then here, at the first Halifax International Security Forum, I heard a similar observation from one participant: “We’ve had the set-up, but is there a middle game?” Or, put another way, can this probing, intelligent president close anything?
As an Obama admirer, I’m worried. He feels over-managed, over-scripted to me, to the point where he’s not showing the guts that prevailed at various difficult moments in the campaign. The ideas are good, but the warmth, cajoling and craft that make ideas more than that are lacking.
I find myself yearning for a presidential gaffe if only to reveal an instinctual human moment. Memo to Obama handlers: Give us a little more of the unvarnished. De-teleprompt the president for a few seconds!"

I'm thankful for this blog and all those who post here, even when we disagree. I'm grateful I live in a country where we can openly disagree.
And last Sunday, after hearing George Will make a remark about extended unemployment benefits being responsible for keeping people unemployed, I am grateful that I am not George Will.
I am grateful that Chris Matthews went after "his-excellency" yesterday on Hardball, and for folks like Patrick Kennedy who stand up for their beliefs even when it costs them personally.
Good to see Mr. Satter on camera. I'm also grateful I got to meet him and all of those nice and interesting people in DC last month.
I'm grateful that the potrack appears to be holding up, although I didn't actually see it. : ) That was a good-looking bird.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The guitar that Buddy Holly customized himself as a tribute to Elvis Presley is going to be auctioned. Christie's auction house will sell Holly's Gibson J-45 guitar.
Holly did leatherwork as a hobby and he covered the guitar in leather because
he had seen Presley play a leather-covered guitar in 1955. It's expected to sell for $450,000 to $550,000. Holly's tweed stage jacket will also be sold, and it's expected to go for at least $3,000.
Original 78's of Presley's first five singles for Sun Records will also be on the block. The auction will take place in New York on December 3.

Sturgeone,
This is the sort of thing that makes the elderly wail, "IF ONLY!!"
When I was 12 my mother dated a gentleman whose job was to distribute records throughout all the juke boxes in the Central Valley. Hearing of my affection for a certain Mr. Presley, he gave me the 78 of "Heartbreak Hotel" which I and some equally besotted friends played into the ground until one of them bounced on the bed on top of it.
For those who have actually never seen a 78 record (me168?), this action turned it into three pieces hanging from the paper title sheet in the middle. But he was only a fad and I could buy the 45 to replace it right? Right!!!!

idea borrowed from the classics to solve afghan dilemma on the cheap with fewer lives lost. we should withdraw but as we do we take with us any female who wants to go. offer all afghani women the opportunity to leave. provide an haven for them and their children under a certain age. what monies that otherwise would have been spent there militarily and for nation building would instead be used for their support. saves our troops lives, saves the women's lives. may even shorten the hostilities within.

Senor Fish,
thanks for that video on the Cellar . The place they are talking about was actually the 2nd location. The first place was actually in a cellar. Or at least below street level. It offered no liquor and had poetry and folk music. I was not old enough to go there when it was open. The second location was actually up stairs and down the street from the original location. Still no liquor but the waitstaff were babes in their underwear. Big attraction for me as well as the music had changed. Rock and Roll and blues. They had bouncers that had no issues with throwing some unruly person down the same stairs you had to climb to get in. Never saw any overt drug use thou I am sure it went on. There was single red light in the middle of the ceiling that was turned on when the cops started up the stair and all the naked chicks ran to the dressing rooms. There were only cushions to sit on and small low tables for your coke drink. When I got back to FTW after my tour with the Air Force the cellar was closed. A weird era had come to an end in FTW.

Hey everyone, you all have a Great Thanksgiving. Too many things to be greatful for to list.
Jamie, this was what I suspected at the time: http://www.rr.com/news/topic/article/rr/9000/9593888/Police_Ky_census_worked_staged_death_as_homicide
That is why I said your favorite female over at MSNBC had it all wrong. Not only did she suggest this was something nefarious before the facts were vetted, but she started what she called an investigation of what she described as "right wing groups" that could be linked to such a "murder" and then went directly into a look at pot growing. Pretty shoddy reporting if you ask me. I wonder if she took that approach to Hasan or even these people:http://www.defenddemocracy.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11787279&Itemid=343
(P.S. Dooty it makes no difference if Newt and others belong to Def o fDem provided the facts presented are true. I believe they are and even FA, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and others have had similar recent exposes about a touchy subject for many Democrats.)
I'll save the comments about the predicted impending conflagration of ticking clocks for after the Turkey and keep my optimism a bit longer.
Again, you all have a nice holiday and Craig, thanks creating the space for people to debate and share even if some are quick to the trigger and slow to the facts..........
