  1. The President bowing to the Japanese emperor is at least better than Bush Sr. throwing up on the prime minister

  2. Yes, Craig, but not as memorable!
I'll be sleeping in that long seat way in the back of the bus for this Palin march to the 2012 campaign. Don't wake me until Fall of 2011,
KO mentions Al Gore at the end of this video. Could it be he is not politically retired?
Is Palin as nuts and brain-scrambled as Reagan was when he could not differentiate movie sets and reality?
    You BETCHA !
    Nah...not really...she's just a liar: advantage Reagan.

  15. Morning all, just can't bring myself to watch the video- I just can't watch O. trash another woman with such snide glee and then there is Craig, always the gentleman trying to deflect O"s volleys. Please let me know if I'm wrong, it's not toxic and won't get my blood boiling.

Been busy, my cousin from Oklahoma arrived last night, we're having a great time. She was telling me about chiggers, among other things, mug what a drag.

Rez- her great grandfather wrote a translation of the bible to Shawnee, he was full blood, guess he worked in the tribal office and as he didn't want the kids to go to "indian school" he fudged some of the records. My cousin's daughter would like to go to college, of course can't afford it. I asked about the gov. minority programs and she said that it's gonna take some doing to straighten out the records first. Do you know anyone that could help with some of that?

  20. When people are swayed by Palin, I feel like I'm watching a horror movie. The other people in the movie don't know who the moster is; only the audience knows.

But even for those who find her personally appealing, how can they find in her, a capable leader?

Actually, Obama seems to be attempting to lead by committee right now...and it AIN'T WORKIN'!!!

How does the saying go? Lead, follow or get out of the way.

I'll give him a pass on the bowing. If there is one thing he knows how to do, it's ingratiate himself to people. Let's hope his likeability factor translates in Asia the way it did in Europe.

In this particular case a 10-degree nod would have been appropriate. It would be reciprocated by a 10-degree nod by the Emperor. That would show the mutual respect that is hoped for. (Actually, as the leader of the vanquished country, the Emperor should do a prolonged 45-degree bow.)

Forget the wrong fork analogy, Jack. In fact his hosts will respect him for trying chopsticks even if he fails. The same is not true about the bow. And, it is wrong to view the bow from our egalitarian eyes. We think differently from folks raised in traditional Oriental societies.

Was the bow a faux pas? No. It was, in their eyes, a validation of American stupidity.

    Max,

I actually agree with you on this one. The photo was taken at the lowest point of the bow (if you see it in motion, the depth isn't all that noticeable). The Japanese Emperor is very short in comparison and Obama's height may have betrayed him when trying for that "equal depth for equal powers" that courtesy required. His bow to the Empress was perfect.

An attempt at simple courtesy is never out of order and some of the right wing ranters come across as arrogant, jingoistic, ignorant slobs.

Not sure the new guidelines on mammograms make sense. Where is a similar cost benefit study on prostate exams? I would think this might lead to insurance companies dropping tests for those women without family history of breast cancer between 40 - 50.

  61. Max,

Palin impresses me as every high school clique leader I've ever come across. They aren't stupid, but they are ignorant. Watch out for the knife in the back and third party lies because self interest and power are everything. They use others as ladders to where they want to go and when challenged will do that wide eyed innocent "Who Me? How can you be so mean?"

Bat eyelashes and squeeze some man's arm muscle here.

Those little blossoms are about as sweetly needy as a Mack truck.

Hear ya Jamie, but be careful. Most Liberal rejection of her is rather snobby: she isn't as smart and educated, cultured or schooled as Liberals. She sounds like a hick and has values far from Harvard.

By the time 2012 rolls up, this might be an asset for her. Personally, until she gets some vocal coaching its hard to listen to her. At least Obama doesn't give me a headache even if he has gotten far too boring.

They confessed War Crimes to him and as usual the Military wanted to keep them covered up.

So what else in new. Are Government is currently covering up War Crimes by the previous administration and members of the House and Senate are all complicit in the cover up.

  80. So where is the vaunted Obama organizing team. I thought these folks were going to make the difference in pushing forward the progress agenda. Maybe Axelrod is misused in the whitehouse and should be in charge of the political side.

  81. "If you had less than $248,200 (250,000 Swiss francs) in your secret account at Switzerland's largest bank, or if it generated less than $99,280 (100,000 Swiss francs) in annual revenue, you can breathe easier.

A landmark deal that the U.S. and Swiss governments struck in August to expose American tax dodgers does not call for the Swiss to blow your cover.

On the other hand, if you had more than $992,802 (1 million Swiss francs) in your account at any time from 2001 through 2008 and you failed to disclose it to the Internal Revenue Service, don't count on Switzerland's legendary tradition of bank secrecy to protect you any longer. It may be just a matter of time before your account details are in the hands of U.S. tax collectors and federal prosecutors."

    Craig,

If you put up the tip jar, remember to put a couple of ones in there to give people the idea. Empty tip jars don't work. :-) You can always donate the proceeds to charity.

Jamie.... I haven't watched Oprah in years either. I was at a friend's house yesterday afternoon and she just had to watch Palin's interview.... god was it boooooring.....

The AP style book should be revised to include the categories that should be used to describe individuals. IMO, I think age should not be included unless it is a relevant issue, ie under-age or an activity exceptional for the age.

And for crying out loud, let's put the fashion industry -and I include make-up in that category- in its place somewhere after the importance of the Corn Festival in Sun Prarie, Wisconsin (which is a lovely event.)

That's right......kind of like the Pelosi plane and the head scarf nonsense. This is just the work of gooper sleazoids like Cantor and McGooper and their hardy band of former college republicans - possible the least principled people on earth.

  88. "...she said, adding that given his height, Obama may have chosen to bow so low to make eye contact with the emperor."

Now, that's rubbish, too. First, making eye contact while bowing is quite disrespectful, and, second, can you imagine making eye contact while in a deep bow to someone who is almost two feet shorter than you? Third, bows of this type are done as close to simultaneously as possible; tell me how someone makes eye contact.

...and yet, Obama continues to provide fodder for them, even after having already made another "bow gaffe" earlier this year. As if it isn't understood in political circles how the GOP media machine operates. This latest gaffe is significant because it occurred on the very same trip that Obama tried to throw around some American weight in China, as if China wasn't heavy enough itself. Just because the "Gooper" media whores capitalize on it doesn't make that any less true.

The Chinese government couldn't care less about U.S. media-generated platitudes like "global balance"; in fact, they'd prefer just the opposite, in their favor. It would be at all our peril, as Americans, if our government didn't recognize that and more delicately approached diplomatic efforts in that region.

  95. Laird, bestowing a 'special' bow on the Japanese emperor is personally offensive to me; let his government return Stinky's older sister who was 'borrowed' during WW-II. After that, ponder the desirability of offering such a bow.

And let them account for the hundreds of thousands of Chinese and Filipinas who were similarly treated.

And, realizing that such an accounting will be impossible to make at this point in time, let his government apologize to the peoples of those countries for the profound suffering his country caused during their occupations of the last century.

    Fair,

thanks for the G Lightfoot bday greeting. He is one of my favorite folkies of that generation. I do one of his songs, poorly I might add. "Home From The Forest" here is a rendition that I think is the best one out there. It is by Tony Rice. Excuse the poor video but the sound is excellent.

  97. The new America's Cup yacht from BMW Oracle is a monster. The BOR 90 is the most radical boat in the history of the 158-year-old regatta, resembling a floating skyscraper more than a traditional racing yacht as it towers nearly 200-feet high.

The height comes from a revolutionary 190-foot wing sail - a stiff, airplane-like sail that will be trimmed by an engine to generate unprecedented speeds even in the lightest of winds.

  98. I think Palin is like Newtie, a member of certain groups fantasy candidates group. The fantasy candidates get hauled out to make a point but they are never serious candidates even when they are actually running. Buchanan is the most successful of the genre, turning hatred into a career asa broadcaster and historian.

  99. " The problem of course is that moderate Republicans must cross the Palin test." - maxtrue

The myth of the moderate republican lives in at least one heart. That's very old-fashioned and sentimental.

A pal of mine was a moderate republican Rep. for a dozen years. Now, he's a Reform ("the jesse the palooka ventura") Party functionary. Several years before he died (11 1/2 years ago now), retired Senator and Air Force General Barry Goldwater was dis-invited from attending republican events, because he was too dam' 'libbrul.' Goldwater hadn't changed much. When the longtime 'conservative' conscience of the party is too dam' libbrul, you know that the moderates are long gone.

Where are all the Hugh Scotts, William Millers, Edward Brookes, and William Frenzels these days ?

Sea, I'm can't offer much help to your cousin since normally I would suggest that the place to go would be the gov't records (BIA) because they were meticulous record keepers of Indian people, unless of course someone was fudging records. :-) I know ancestry.com has some great Indian census and roll data. You can sign-up and have access for a month for free.

However the real problem is that, like most everything else, there's not much tribal money for higher ed unless of course your tribe has a profitable gaming enterprise.
