Phony Jail Bait Politics

| | Comments (30)

Yet another myth is the foolish claim that we go to jail if we don't insure ourselves. Now that the House has passed the Democratic healthcare bill get ready for more baby talk from opponents. Like those arguments that requiring all Americans to get insurance will put them in jail. Sure, there's a tax penalty if you don't get insurance. Refuse to pay the penalty or risk imprisonment. But refusing to pay any tax risks jail, not just this one.

You can't get a driver's license without insurance. No one calls that fascist. C'mon people now, get your health insurance. If you can't afford it, the House bill provides options.

Scaring people into thinking that you go to jail if you don't get insurance is just another example of baby talk from the powers that be.

  4. Health Care Reform is so important. I have a sick feeling about the bill passed by the House..So little...
We made a big mistake making Barack Obama the Democratic nominee for President. I'm not part of the "we". I wrote in Hillary in November!!!!!!!!!!

  5. My kids have drivers licenses, and neither has insurance. Neither has had a car in years. And one only needs some minimum in car insurance. If one owns a house outright, I don't think they're mandated to have home owners insurance. If one owns precious, expensive stuff, they don't have to take out a rider on their home owners insurance to cover it.

  7. within the venerable hallways of critterville, what's the nickname for the bill? or the cute little euphemisms from staff off the record?

my favorite was "tedicare" for the medicare-for-all effort.

  8. Deep Thoughts ! OK sarcasm here - but we need to get real discussion.

    Or you get this....
If you don't get insurance then you dont get a drivers license - correct. Then make it so if you do not get Health Insurance - you cannot sue the Hospital or Doctor when they do not give you care - Kind of like one of those end of life statements - a DNR !

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | November 8, 2009 7:26 AM

  9. mr. pong, there's an element of genius in that dnr idea of yours. refusing to get health insurance (refusal by those who can easily afford it) is tantamount to making a such a statement.

btw, could this reasoning also be applied to emergency care and dnr questions with regard to jehovah witnesses, christian scientists, etc. who refuse med intervention letting healthcare people off the malmed hook?

Posted by: patd Author Profile Page | November 8, 2009 7:33 AM

  10. Morning patd... regard to jehovah witnesses, christian scientists, etc. who refuse med intervention letting healthcare people off the malmed hook? - Absolutely - If they want to meet the maker and move on to the next life then there is a song for that... Let it be !! And understand their wishes and keep it simple and out of all legal action (except watch for Children not of age to make choice)

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | November 8, 2009 7:44 AM

  12. that communist reference reminds me of the big insurance and pharma issue. does the bill that passed contain the anti-trust language to rein in the great greedy gods who control us?

  13. Lets ask Craig - He read the bill.. Now to be fair 2K pages is a lot to absorb even for a great one like Craig..

So Craig.. and the answer to regulation of Healthcare providers is.......(i hear a drum roll)

  14. I'm glad there was enough of a cushion that Kucinich was able to vote against the bill. And, it's nice seeing that Gao has both a moral compass and a conscience.

  15. Ah.. but this is only phase one.. I am not an expert on the process and who knows the Political BS that takes place... And now Barack wants it done by Christmas .. I do not see that happening.

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | November 8, 2009 8:16 AM

  16. ping, yes be fair now. it is possible that those 2k pages are really several little bills (read and reread and reported on over many critter years) rolled into one. just have to keep track of what's slipped in in the wee small hours over pizza and seen all the smoke and mirrors.
the anti-trust thingy seemed to be separate when first discussed. hope one successfully shoved the shiv in to them during the waning days.

  17. Getting insurance is all about personal responsibility. You used to hear a lot about personal responsibility from Republicans.

    Great Point..

Craig will you do a few segments on Personal Responsibility !!!

Wow what a thought for the leaders of the Free World..

  19. Flatus.... Cao voted for it in order to have a chance at re-election. He won election in William Jefferson's old seat because the people there were smart enough not to re-elect that corrupt old buzzard. But the area is heavily Democratic. He HAD to vote for this bill.

I have long considered myself a feminist.... and though Stupak's amendment pisses me off too, I agree 100% with Craig.

  20. In Texas are required to have insurance if are driving a car. Just as the auto must be licensed and inspected. If you go to requester you auto or get it inspected you will be asked for your proof of insurance. Same if you are stopped for any moving violation. I can not speak to anyone that can afford self insurance as I don't travel in those circles.

I think of my Grandmother,Mother, sister and niece, dammit i want woman to have choices regarding their own bodies..In this bill, it looks like only well too do woman have the choices...I keep chanting, bigger picture, bigger picture....

  22. isn't this the way the Constitution requires the Congress to work a new bill? Where is the problem? Senate passes its bill and the House passes its bill. If both are passed then the two are merged into one bill then it is voted on again and if it passes it is sent up to the White House for the President to sign. If the President doesn't sign and it is vetoed then if there are enough for it in the Congress can overturn and force it into law. Isn't that the way it works? Been a long time since my last civics class. Kennedy was just beginning his short presidency.

So, I don't quite get OD's statement that s/he is not part of the we since he wrote in Hillary's name.

    "Nancy Pelosi’s Disgrace"

“We got more than what we thought we’d get” – Rep. Bart Stupak (via C-SPAN)

"That says it all, now doesn’t it?

    Not quite:

Because of the limits placed on the exchanges, most of the participants will have some form of premium credit or affordable subsidy. That means most will be ineligible for abortion coverage. The idea that people are going to go out and purchase separate “abortion plans” is both cruel and laughable. If this amendment passes, it will mean that virtually all women with insurance through the exchange who find themselves in the unwanted and unexpected position of needing to terminate a pregnancy will not have coverage for the procedure. Abortion coverage will not be outlawed in this country. It will simply be tiered, reserved for those rich enough to afford insurance themselves or lucky enough to receive from their employers. – Ezra Klein"

  24. As has become painfully obvious, Renee, whether any women are pissed or not matters naught. We were traded off much like women have been bought and sold for centuries. So be it.

Tony, I think it's time for those of us who feel as you do to find and support charities that help girls and women manage their fertility and provide abortion services when required.

And, we must insist that our law enforcement officials be proactive in protecting people exercising their reproductive freedom, and those who are helping them do so.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | November 8, 2009 9:09 AM

  26. Tony...
all women have the right to choose an abortion.... if this bill passes intact, there will not be any money used to fund one in the public option portion. And yes, that will affect poor women who's only option for healthcare insurance is the public option. But there's nothing to stop private money from helping these women. You can start a private non-profit foundation that collects charitable contributions to help women get the procedure. We do that kind of thing in this country for healthcare issues all the time. I give yearly to the Cancer Society.

I wish we could have the healthcare system that Flatus advocates for here. But that's not reality at the moment. If you want something done.... you must work with what is possible, IMO.

time for Rick and I to go out to Sunday breakfast.. I want quiche this morning.

    Flatus,Renee
Very good points regarding giving to organizations the help woman in the area of reproductive issues..I also give to the Cancer society so giving to woman's organizations targeting reproductive coverage won't be hard to do at all..Thanks, your comments did provide a little relief from the sting of this..Civil Rights to me are important, but to some there used for bartering..Real world, just look at what happened in Maine..
