Obama's International Learning Curve

| | Comments (52)

I guess a new president who was a state legislator five years ago has to travel abroad merely to meet and greet foreign leaders, avoiding substantive accomplishments until he knows what he is doing. Because that's all that seems to happen with Barack Obama's incessant international travel.

Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao emerged with nothing but rhetoric about "good will" on Tuesday after many hours together. We saw similar vague talk without deals following Obama's other international trips.

At least Obama is not making the mistake of getting bad deals just to say he did something, like when John Kennedy was taken to the cleaners in his first meeting with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. After that 1961 meeting in Vienna, Kennedy told his brother Robert it was "like dealing with Dad -- all give and no take."

  1. Let's HOPE there even is a curve, and that Obama is ascending it. One only gets one chance to make a first impression, and Obama would be well-served not to squander the clean-slate he seems to have been given by the international political structure.

kgc, imo you're right in your theory, all celeb and no pol. this bunch reminds me of willie the shakes'

“Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg and owlet's wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble”

let's see, we have newtie's eye, so would sp contribute the wool or tongue, rush the adder's fork and hannity the sting. and the huckster's toe, leg or wing for the rest of the hell-broth brew?

  9. The latest figures show that the GDP grew at a brisk 3.2%. That figure included the Cash for Clunkers, and the $8,000 incentive for first time home buyers.
The government will continue its first time home buyers incentives into 2010, and come spring they will usher in a new line of incentives for home appliances
up to $1,500.00, but what happens after all the incentives dry up? Home builders have cut back on building new homes because of the glut of homes they already have in inventory. Most of the cars purchased during Cask for Clunkers were foreign, and all the appliances are made overseas. None of theses government incentives created any jobs in their corresponding industry. When the government cheerleaders try to paint a pretty picture of over 500,000 new unemployment claims, because it wasn't as bad as they had thought, you know there are major problems coming down the road. Higher unemployment, foreclosures, load defaults are less than 6 months away.

  10. We should all be Buhtanese
    "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gross_national_happiness
The concept of gross national happiness (GNH) is an attempt to define quality of life in more holistic and psychological terms than gross national product.

The term was coined in 1972 by Bhutan's former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who has opened up Bhutan to the age of modernization, soon after the demise of his father, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. It signaled his commitment to building an economy that would serve Bhutan's unique culture based on Buddhist spiritual values. Like many moral goals, it is somewhat easier to state than to define. Nonetheless, it serves as a unifying vision for Bhutan's five-year planning process and all the derived planning documents that guide the economic and development plans of the country.

While conventional development models stress economic growth as the ultimate objective, the concept of GNH claims to be based on the premise that true development of human society takes place when material and spiritual development occur side by side to complement and reinforce each other. The four pillars of GNH are the promotion of sustainable development, preservation and promotion of cultural values, conservation of the natural environment, and establishment of good governance."

Uh, no thanks. Hey Pat, I actually think the whole Newscorp affair is one thing handled well by the administration, and IMO granting an interview to them isn't a concession.

Oh, and why isn't Biden going on these international diplomatic liaisons? What is he doing these days, anyway? I haven't heard much about him, and the I thought the justification for adding him to the ticket was to bolster foreign policy credibility.

  41. Palin is an interesting phenomenon,
She has strong support among a large chunk of the Republican party. I've seen polls that show they support her even when they don't believe she is qualified to be president. I suspect there is a personal identification with her for many of them and the more she is attacked and ridiculed by national media the more they feel attacked too.
She has tapped into a strong populist movement within the Republican party. If she had the skill to manage it she can create waves. But I don't think she does.
Somebody will have the skill, which is why I don't worry about Romney and the money boys getting anywhere.

You said that if that group didn't vote she could possibly win and I pointed out they often don't vote. It is a weakness of the democratic party. And will cost them in 2010 and maybe 2012.

  43. palin's perky voice chirruping insouciantly about killing everything from moose to Iranian foeti drives me nutz. How can any sane person be so invincibly cheery about slaughter ? I doubt that she had any qualms about signing Alaska's Death Panels into law.

She's too long in the tooth to play the chirpy daughter in Married with Children, but put 25 years on her, and she'll be perfect for one of the Aunts in Arsenic and Old Lace. Actually, it's not her bloodthirstiness that appalls me - I've known many norman bates wannabees - it's that damned perkiness.

Of course, it is this sunny executioner aspect that endears her to rapeblicans.

Posted by: xrepublican Author Profile Page | November 17, 2009 11:55 PM

  44. A cunning political assassin like rove could gut palin's campaign in a day on her Alaskan Death Panels alone.

My money is on palin to act like a potential candidate through the 2012 Iowa Caucuses, all the while pushing her books, eyewear, fragrances, couture, exercise videos, weight loss system and food brand, talk show, signature paramilitary paraphernalia (tent, snow shoes, fishing tackle, life jacket, flamethrower, bowie knife with double blood gutters, full auto 12 guage shotgun with 25 shot drum magazine, grenade launcher, cruise missile, stealth fighter, HBomb, yaddayaddayadda).

I think money, not power, is the big palin motivator.

Anyone here ever cook yak on a spit ?

Alas, man does not live by lox and caviar alone. At least, this man doesn't. Man must also have bbq'd brisket with a big-nosed shiraz or an earthy plavac.

Right now, this man needs a pillow. G'night.
