  3. An interesting story on a polling commissioned by South Carolina's largest newspaper. The focus is initially on Wilson, but later on it gets into who speaks for the Republican Party. Worth reading:

  8. Patsi,

The MJ, is still a great way to go...you can talk to little Maria, and anyone else day and night for only 20 bucks a year....SEA...have you looked into it...it can also be a business line for that much..lot of telephone savings: I save at least 100 per month...

Pasti, don't give up on it for the things that you need. Go to the chat feature on the mj, and see what can be done...good luck; good luck with the new book also....about your wild and crazy day's??

  9. dooty, re shelley winters question, the link below says:

"She shared an apartment with Marilyn Monroe; they shared a bathing suit for cheesecake shots and a mink coat for dates. Legend has it that Winters taught Monroe how to "act pretty", by tilting her head back, lowering her eyes, and ever-so-slightly opening her mouth."

patd -- thanks for that Shelly Wintrs link. She is one of my all-time favorites. And Monroe is another one. Even back when she was just seen as a sex symbol, I always saw Marilyn Monroe as a great comic actress.

  15. Craig -- I have signed a deal with Pat Benatar to write her memoir.

But this has been one bitch of a year, financially. Things are really tightening up. Like I keep saying, people like me and many others here who are independent contractors don't show up in the unemployment figures. And we get no monthly checks, either.

  18. Patsi,

You might want to treat your self as an employee. You can pay into the pool a small sum, and get unemployment checks. Who ever does your taxes could advise you on how to do it....I own my own corp. but treat myself as an employee. During this time of low income..it was the best way to go..b/c of the tax adjustments???

  25. Patsi, you simply plug your telephone devices into the output jack of the MJ. Think of the MJ just as you would any other telephone wall jack in the house. Any device you can plug into the wall, you can plug into the MJ.

The only drawback to the devices is that they must be plugged into a running computer with a broadband connection. They should work just fine with one of the new generation of minimalist computers that consume well under 100-watts

Of course the host computer can be turned off at night, but that will leave you dependent on cellphone for 911, etc.

  29. Patsi,

Yes one can pay into the fund. Give your self a check every two wks and when you do your quarterly include yourself as an employee. Of course you would have to pay taxes on this income..you still should see the person that does you're taxes..but that would be the way to go...

On the M. J. you can attach any devise that you have..just need to connect them to a different power source..and I would not put any of them on the same one....I noticed an improvement on the jack when they are separated..

There is another way that I have changed the way I use phones in the past year, or so: I am very pleased that I have changed ot Boost Mobile...it only costs me 55 dollars flat. No hidden charges from the stated and city, and the government....and no contracts to sign....it is unlimited day and night....I talk to people in Ohio for hrs at a time...and very happy with the quality....let me qualify that..it is as good as any...it is a Motorola, and has the two way radio, that is also included...plus it has the web in it..it is limited, but I don't use it any way....

  30. I am now an un-sung hero.....while coming down that road the picture of which, Jamie, you commented upon on my blog i saw in the adjacent roadway a magnificent bird of prey on its back with a wing sticking up awkwardly.......I took another sip of beer and pondered as to whether i should get out and look at it.......i was listening to the replay of "Wait Wait Don't tell Me" and got out to go over to the stricken bird......he was a big beautiful bastard.......lying there on his back........i figured what the hell and called my niece to see if she knew anyone who would be interested in this kind of situation and she gave me the name and number of this guy at the marina who might know something and 3 minutes later the phone rang from the Raptor Center in a place many miles north of here.....He says, can you get it into a cardboard box? I says, that boy's got talons about 4 inches long.....he says, once you put a towell over his head, he or she will become docile......so i borreyed some welding gloves and took a towel i had in the car as a result of my daughter ditching a huge garbage bag full of perfectly good towels which had faded in hue and put the towel over the boid's haid......he became docile and as i was picking him or her up the towel came off and he or she became agitant and i let him or her back down to the ground......but his or her talons were gripping the towel so i lifted it up and swung the bird into the cardboard box........so i calls the raptor center back and says the bird is in the box, can somebody pick 'em up? i says look, there aint no possibility of me going much of anywhere tonight, but this bird could use some help........he says it's sunday, i gotta make some calls.......one of his callees calls me back and says i'll meet you in 23 minutes at the pig-wig parking lot....I says "Fair neat....."

    and it was done..........

  36. Sturge

Having seen what this parrot on my shoulder can do when he is mad, I don't think there is a pair of welding gloves heavy enough for me to pick up that bird.

  37. rez........i can call the raptor center and find out.....I talk of heros sung and un-sung because I'm reading the oddessey for the first time.....i read all the historians and a smattering of plays, but never the oddy or the iliad........in toto i mean........read bits and pieces.....it's an engrossing story.........heros........I say heros because the guy who picked up the bird in the parking lot says, "You're a hero." and i thought, well, as long as i dont have to drive too far..........

  38. jack he had claws which would stymie any false attempt at friendship.......it was made easy as he clung to the towel and allowed me to lift him over into the box........the gloves were a false security but the guy assured me that with the towel the bird would be docile......

Try this. Go to the control panel and uninstall the problem devices. Reboot the computer and let it rediscover them and search for the proper drivers.

    Patsi,

The health care bill really has turned into an Insurance Company boondoggle. Coverage is mandated, but there is no public option for most people and the ones who can get it doesn't kick in for a couple of years.

End result, lots of new customers without any loss of the old ones. Now whether the sheer volume will help lower costs is left up to the tender mercies of the Insurance corporations.

Now to help that along, there is buying out of state policies ... kind of iffy as that could end up in courts challenged by state Insurance Commissioners who are responsible for enforcement at the state level. Then there is the possibility that the Senate might add in a "trigger" which might or might not help threaten the corporate sleeze bags who should be committing harikiri in shame for their crimes against the American public.

IOW, instead of doing the simple thing of opening up Medicare in stages to anyone who wanted to buy in with supplements supplied by the insurance companies, they have created this multi part monster that probably won't change a damn thing.

    Patsi,
Scary!! This from HuffoPo link you provided,thanks..

"First, health costs will continue to skyrocket, even faster than they are now, as taxpayer dollars are pumped into the private sector. The response of payers -- government and employers -- will be to shrink benefits and increase deductibles and co-payments. Yes, more people will have insurance, but it will cover less and less, and be more expensive to use."

  54. Tony, this problem is going to make you crazy. Tell Best Buy to make a house call to fix the damned thing. It's not your fault. And, it's not your niece's either. Or they can take it back under the lemon law.

"MSNBC Presses Obama on Campaign Promises"

"If President Obama happened to glance at “The Rachel Maddow Show” last Monday, he might have winced.

From left, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow have plenty to talk about with President Obama in office.

Rachel Maddow says, “I don't think our audience is looking for unequivocal 'rah-rah.'”
TV ads for Chris Matthews's show use the tagline, “pushing back on the president.”

Ms. Maddow pretended to celebrate the passage of a health care overhaul bill in the House, calling it “potentially a huge generational win for the Democratic Party” — but then halted the triumphant music and called it an “electoral defeat.”

The Stupak amendment, she said, was “the biggest restriction on abortion rights in a generation.” Then she wondered aloud about the consequences for Democrats “if they don’t get women or anybody who’s pro-choice to ever vote for them again.” She returned to the subject the next four evenings in a row"

"G.M. Is Said to Soon Begin Paying U.S. Debt"

"G.M. received about $6 billion more in working capital from the Obama administration in April and May, and was given $30.1 billion in bankruptcy financing and postbankruptcy restructuring money, for which the government received a majority stake in the new version of G.M. that emerged from bankruptcy.

Of the total, only the $6.7 billion, most of it provided by the United States, was considered a loan that required repayment. The rest was money traded for equity in the company.

G.M. did not have to pay back the loan until July 2015, and the government did not expect to receive the money before then, the person said.

On Monday, G.M. is to report its first financial results since emerging from bankruptcy protection in July. The early debt repayment could be an indication that G.M.’s financial condition is strong enough that it can begin parting with the government money."

If the far'ters who high-jacked the GOP put her out there as a "serious" candidate in 2012, the Dems have a lock on another 4 years.

  87. Tony,
IMO, Compaqs are the most frustrating things to work with. They come bundled with tons of crapware and have numerous proprietary drivers and diagnostic routines that slow things down and make updating and upgrading extremely difficult.

Unfortunately, since I build my own, I just don't know what brand to recommend--they all speak highly of themselves.

This I do know, you paid your very hard earned money to get a top name brand product from a national retailer. It's absolutely up to them to make things right. Don't accept excuses. Make them own the problem.

  93. "....one of the earliest diplomatic tussles involved how to spell -- and therefore pronounce -- the name of the 44th American president in Mandarin Chinese......

The president has been referred to here as "Aobama" since he first appeared on the national scene. And change, as he himself often says, is hard.

One foreign ministry official Chinese translator even appeared to be mocking the American translation efforts. He said he preferred "Aobama," because the Chinese character for Ao is used also for Australia and as part of Macao, and means "profound and deep." By contrast, "Ou" is the Chinese character used for Europe.

The official agreed that the pronunciation of "Oubama" may indeed be closer to the American pronunciation of the 44th president's name. But he said it sounded strange to the ear, reminding him slightly of the Japanese term "Obaasan," which is a rather unkind way of referring to an old lady ("Obaasan," while Japanese, is widely understood by Chinese on Taiwan and in Hong Kong).

What the translator did not mention, however, is that the "Ao" character has a lot of other less complimentary meaning -- which may be why the Chinese government prefers to use it for Obama.. "Ao" can also mean "difficult to understand," "abstruse" and "obscure."

  106. Hi you all. Hope your weekend was great. Can't say Jets, Steelers, New England made me richer, but what the hell.....

The following is just an update regarding Iran. I did say about 60 days ago, that the next 60 days might decide whether a strike on Iran will come soon after the new year, or at least credible preparation for a strike that Iran will understand. No war mongering intended.....

Here is a short list of events that have happened since my remark.

    1. No acceptance of Obama's enrichment deal (see last link for the Iranian rejection).

    2. IAEA says Iran has not disclosed other secret sites and Qom has not been inspected to satisfaction

    3. Iran supplies Yemeni militants and gets caught again shipping illegal arms to Hizb'Allah in a cashe over 500 tons. Saudis launch strikes against Iranian supported militants.

    4. Iran reported testing small nuclear weapon design for ballistic missile (not with real warhead of course).

    5. Iran declares Americans caught are spies

    6. Quds to take over Iranian Press

    7. Iran has Hamas pull out of coming elections and brokered unity deal.

    8. Iranians caught in Iraq fomenting trouble.

    9. Iran in new defense pact with Turkey who pledges to pass on vital Intel on Israel and the US. Big problems for NATO.

    10. Sakorzy tells Iran Israel won't wait much longer and Putin today seconds that warning as the reactor bound for Iran is put on hold again.

    11. Iran builds more silos in an effort to confuse a possible strike against targets

    12. http://www2.debka.com/headline.php?hid=6373

In above link Debka talks about unprecedented Intel meeting between Sunnis and Israel as well as noting Iran published Debka reports confirming some of the information (see latest Debka headlines). The article itself discusses new US strategy in dealing with Iran.

These items come from various sources and perhaps I can post them later. I suspect however the news above is fairly accurate and means that the gesture parade is about over with hard facts facing this administration's understandable effort to negotiate. It appears the Hillary faction may win out with Abbas now threating a unilateral announcement of the new Islamic State of Palestine. The O-team strategy might just be blowing up in their faces without much Press fanfare, but what is most important is how the administration adapts and revises policy in light of the many signals.......

    Just an FYI post.....

    later....
