  1. Very handsome crowd. One magnificent bird strutting, and Dale's photograph of the area is beautiful.

    Enjoy your well deserved holiday.

    Rez,

Yes, we went up through Ashford. It is a beautiful drive.
Glad you enjoyed the photos. Genealogy is my major hobby when I'm not going on about politics.

  4. yes......i opened my formerly rural mailbox and pulled out a vest made from an elk......not only that....it's getting weird now...... my niece brought me several coats to the crabfest and one of them was a 3/4 length genu-wine deerskin fully lined made by the Custom Coat Company from Hwy 49 in Berlin, Wisconsin.......
all i meant by the terminal illness schtick was that whenever really nice things are happening in sector 4 there's a big hairy bastard coming up on you from sector 9...............never fails

but i don't care, no reason why i should.......an elken vest is a joy to behold and an absolutely bango comfort in a crab's old age......

  5. it's just like margaret mitchell......woman newspaper drudge back when women were this or that and then she writes this golden brick of a book and as the golden bricks are falling into her beautiful wall she steps off a curb and gets whacked by a city bus.......

  6. yes, yes, it was a taxi.......same difference.............

Posted by: sturgeone Author Profile Page | November 28, 2009 2:09 AM

  7. know whatcha mean about pockets.......i used to be a connor-seer about vesses......i found out that you could go to the good-will and pick up really nice vesses all day for a buck a vest........they had to have a belt in the back.....wear a white shirt and a store-bought vest and voy-lar.....instant country western band costume........then one time in 81-82 we did a winter tour in the white central northwest with this hillbilly from muncie whose brother had paid for him to go to nashville and make a record.......and then of course, he got these appleton, wisconsin, talent agents to book him all over north dakota, saskatchewan and new mexico cause he had a record.......a 45 rpm......3 of them in fact.........he carried them in this little suitcase and sold them when he could......well, Earl.....he had 3 vesses per bandmember.......a navy blue one.......a scarlett red one......and a denim one upon which his wife had sewed sequined wagon wheels and stuff........we was doing six-seven nights a week and we'd be cacked out in the hotel room and Earl would stick his head in the door at some point during the brandy alexanders and announce:
"Blue Vesties tonight, boys.......ya'll get some rest, we got a show to do......."

there was a lot of stories mixed in with that one.......but anytime one of 'em gets told, somewhere in the narrative will surely come, "Blue vesties tonight, boys.......ya'll get some rest, we got a show to do......."

  8. Eagle Beak had a shitty job in Rapid when our nashville bassplayer met a girl while we were in moose jaw and subsequently jumped ship........became a moose jovian........he was a strange duck, that one.......one of his biggest schticks was his fiddle on a stick......

So Sprite talks Don into quitting his crappy job in a Rapid City sign company and getting on a plane to Fargo to join up with the band..........which he does, forthwith.......

Posted by: sturgeone Author Profile Page | November 28, 2009 3:13 AM

  9. bob...... por que..........por que tu no more making no more leather goods?

dont know how old this old elk is but it's damn fine work......

what kinda sewing machines does leather work take?

Posted by: sturgeone Author Profile Page | November 28, 2009 3:40 AM

  10. it was don sent me the stone eagle......he has a studio in rapid doing graphic arts type schtuff.......he got runned over by a truck when he was a kid and spent a few years in shriners hospitals......he said when he was out one time wearing leg braces his brother would make him put the braces on outside his pants and go thru all the bars and pool halls, and barber shops and stuff selling his newspapers for him.........

Posted by: sturgeone Author Profile Page | November 28, 2009 3:57 AM

  11. this particular story is about Eagle Beak and his mom......i can't finish it now but it's a goodern........we all sat down to pot roast, mashed potaters and gravy and then it was Earl standing by the piano with me playing, doing the old rugged cross and abide with me after signing his 3 nashville 45 rpm records for don's mom when we took him home after the band went belly-up in mandan........and don's bass-playing reputation went sky high after all the Rapid City moo-jicians heard about how he flew off to join the nashville band with a recording artist and played out the winter........

  17. What a magnificent gathering in MA! And, with Tom and Jenny leading the pack.

Our Filipina guest is incredibly gullible. She asked if I had ever had turkey eggs. I told her I hadn't because turkeys are the only birds that have live birth of their off-spring.

I know she is eagerly waiting to share her new knowledge with others. And, when she does, I'm sure my life will be in jeopardy.

Too tired to hit the net last night, sorry to worry you. Meg Ryan was in my booth yesterday for quite some time. She is still adorable. Off to show again.

  30. Flatus @ 7:30 -

A Provisional Patent , which allows you to use Patent Pending, has only a $ 120 filing fee. You gain protection from that point. One has a year from that date to file the patent it's self. You don't have to have a lawyer, most of which, involves the patent search. Google , as well as the Patent Office , have a searchable data bases. The Patent Office by law, is mandated to advise , and help a filer with the application. I have been in those data bases a lot lately, I am encouraged by what I haven't found.

A Provisional Patent is my next step , after I finish this model I'm building. I have had this idea for years, it's really pretty cool to be holding the actual parts in my hands.

At least seven cases of mature male polar bears eating bear cubs have been spotted this year among the animals around Churchill, Manitoba, said Ian Stirling, a retired Environment Canada biologist who specializes in the Churchill bears.

Stirling said evidence suggests the cubs are being killed for food, not just so the male can mate with the sow.

Watched most of a tape of the old pbs show

I know, I know, I don't live in southern CA partly because of the Santa Ana's, and think people are crazy for living there for other reasons as well.

"This marriage is bigger than José María and I," Freyre told the Observer. "It is a victory for all who face prejudice and discrimination across Latin America and the Caribbean. It is proof that at last the grip of the Catholic church is slipping across Latin America, the system that has kept gay communities silent and fearful is crumbling. What is happening on Tuesday is a strike against those attitudes that have repressed sexual rights across this continent for too long."

  55. Why do people vote based on issues that have nothing to do with governance? We let small and often petty irrelevant issues become the basis of judgement and pretend the big issues are beyond our comprehension.

We outlaw all kinds of things in building codes, why not allow energy efficient light bulbs be the only ones sold. Capitalist ingenuity ought to be able to step in and correct all the problems. I read some where if we could make this change it would turn back the global warming clock.

"But then personality is about all that our media can cope with, since the Ameerican political system, despite ever more expensive elections, sees to it that nothing of an overtly political nature may be discussed. It is true that one candidate, daringly, if briefly, suggested that since 1 percent of the population owns most of the country, as well as quite a bit of the globe elsewhere, perhaps that 1 percent ought not to pay even less tax than it currently does. This tore it. For a moment, the red flag snapped in CNN's early light, but by twilight's last gleaming, that banner was struck, and no real issue was touched on again."

I understand you need to pick your battles, and governing is the art of the possible. But pretending these proven cost-controlling ideas don’t even exist is governmental malpractice.

Thanks..yes I did like that article. Keep looking for the signs that will end religion. It's not that they are against gay's; or gay marriage. per say ..it is , that they know, that they will start to lose more and more power when these type of things are acceptable as a norm. Like I said, the end of religion= the end of terrorism, and wars...or 95% of the reason for them..

The other thing that will stop these wars..are to stop meddling in other country's..stop spreading the news....religion that is....

  76. solar, if you've absolutely nothing else to do, bored out of your mind, here's a discussion for you about trying (or really, not trying) to define "religion" as far as the law is concerned. http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/hrj/iss16/gunn.shtml

sort of dull, dense. i equate it with beef jerky. it does stall off hunger of a sort... mental beef jerky.

  78. got to looking around on there for whatever happened to the Salvation Navy..........led me to this:

    http://www.pnwbands.com/salvation.html

Like so many musical aggregations they disbanded at the height of their fame........

The Salvation Navy recorded four songs in May 1968. Those songs were "To Love Somebody", "Parchment Farm", "Satisfied" and one untitled song. Those recording are now preserved on CD today. The Salvation Navy’s style of music was a mixture of blues, psychedelic, rock and pop. Eric Christopher was a showman on stage and could be compared to The Doors’ Jim Morrison.

The Salvation Navy's big moment of glory came in June 1968 when the band opened for The Grassroots, the Dunhill recording act from Los Angeles, California. The Grassroots drummer borrowed Mike Kerstetter’s blanket to use with their drum kit.

After The Salvation Navy disbanded in June 1968, Christopher and Kerstetter started the band "Faith". Later, Darryl Riffero joined forces with a soul/R&B group "The Psych River Soul Mill" as their lead guitarist.

  80. "How can 59 million people be so dumb, Britain's Daily Mail famously asked in a day-after headline of the re-election of George W. Bush in 2004. The Daily Mail can notch a new one for its shame gallery: How can 3 million Swiss be so bigoted? Switzerland's People's Party, a far-right, nationalist brood whose members dominate the Swiss parliament, is celebrating: its initiative to ban minarets in Switzerland passed with close to 60% of the vote today."

  82. White House's Ties to Health Care Industry Deeper Than Visitor Records Show

As Obama taught his constitutional law students, power in America is based on "relationships built on self-interest."

In August, the Associated Press asked the Obama White House -- which has promised to be the most transparent administration 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has ever seen -- to release information on all communications between top staff and health care industry bigwigs. The call went unanswered, so in September the AP downgraded its request to a log of health care-related visits to those same top White House officials.

On Wednesday, the White House released records of 575 such visits since Jan. 20. It catalogs meetings with 22 top Obama aides including chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and senior advisers Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod, and Pete Rouse.

The list of White House guests is a real who's-who of the health care industry. It includes Billy Tauzin, chief of PhRma, the drug industry lobby; Scott Serota, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield; and lobbyists from the Business Roundtable, an organization representing the policy interests of head honchos at major U.S. companies. more:

  83. http://littlesis.org/list/72/White_House_health_care_visitors

A list of healthcare executives and lobbyists who have visted the White House during the first 8 months of the Obama administration.

    • Rahm Emanuel is closely tied to two of the folks on the list. The first is Joel Johnson, a friend who met the chief of staff one-on-one and who lobbies for UnitedHealth and Kinetic Concepts, a medical device maker. The other is Jonathan Hoganson, a lobbyist who represents Merck and PhRma and who just happens to have worked as Emanuel's legislative director for five years and was also a legislative fellow for Rod Blagojevich. Hoganson met with Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Rahm's older brother and a special adviser on health care policy in the White House.

    • Connections to Tom Daschle, failed nominee for secretary of Health and Human Services, include Joshua Ackil, his former advisor on technology, and lobbyists for Alston & Bird, where Daschle was a policy advisor until recently.

    • Nancy Pelosi, Joe Lieberman, and Dick Durbin all have former aides on the AP's list, in addition to Emanuel and Daschle.

  87. Poll: Limbaugh is most influential conservative

    (11-29) 16:18 PST NEW YORK, (AP) --

By a wide margin, Americans consider Rush Limbaugh the nation's most influential conservative voice.

Those are the results of a poll conducted by "60 Minutes" and Vanity Fair magazine and issued Sunday. The radio host was picked by 26 percent of those who responded, followed by Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck at 11 percent. Actual politicians — former Vice President Dick Cheney and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin — were the choice of 10 percent each.

He is pocketing the money and listening to the lobbyist.
after all he never said exactly what he would do, did he?

The Panama Canal is absolutely the most fascinating feat of engineering and construction that I've ever seen. I would spend hours watching the operation of the locks and the absolute mastery of the locking operation by everyone involved in it.

  99. And the story also recalls another act of clemency gone awry: Huckabee advocated for parole for a convicted rapist who -- his allies said -- had been railroaded by Huckabee predecessor Bill Clinton. The rapist, Wayne DuMond, was released; he raped and murdered another woman.

  102. But Flatus, they got to stand on the ground;-)

These guys pouring this concrete were doing it 850ft up and the uncompleted arch that was sticking out above the canyon was held up by cables tied back to the edge of the canyon. They also crossed that 1000ft span from both directions and lined up perfect.

That impresses this old nail pounder.
btw they tell me that the new bridge will have the view of the dam screened so drivers can't rubberneck. Also they have straightened the road out. Looked very good because it takes into consideration the asthetics of the area.

  105. Patd, No, all of ca, including me, is still here. It seems I'm just a candy. The gusts were up to 36 mph, tho. I was just jumpy because that old pbs show was so gut-wrenching - did you ever see it? It was about revenge and I remembered enough of it to know what was going to happen. There was another pbs show called House of Cards re a brit minister who kept kidding rid of people in his way, using everyone else to cause the destruction. I had expected to enjoy it one day again, but now I'm not so sure.

Both those shows show how easy it is to destroy - people tend to think the best, not wanting to believe in the poison that is dispersed. In reality, all it takes is words and it freaks me out. In fact it freaks me out right now to mention it so I'm gonna shut up.

Was that Thanksgiving song the Thanksgiving Prayer? I always loved it. On Classsic Arts Showcase the other day they showed an old tape of Jussi Bjoerling singing it - sublime.
