Ryan J. Stanton, AnnArbor.com -- Marilynn Dickerson sat patiently in her chair, arms folded and clutching a copy of Helen Thomas' latest book.
The 89-year-old Scio Township resident was at the front of the line at the Michigan Theater tonight in downtown Ann Arbor (Michigan) to see the veteran journalist and author speak to a packed house.
It turned out Dickerson was waiting to see an old friend.
Thomas spoke at Michigan Theater Tuesday night.
"I went to school with her at Wayne," Dickerson said of her time with Thomas at Wayne State University in Detroit. "I graduated in '42. I just knew her as a casual friend, but I knew her well. She was just an awfully nice gal."
Helen Thomas, a veteran White House reporter who has covered the administrations of 10 U.S. presidents since John F. Kennedy, shared tales of her nearly 60 years as a journalist tonight.
She discussed her new book, co-written with veteran journalist Craig Crawford, "Listen Up Mr. President: Everything You Always Wanted Your President to Know and Do." Organizers promised Thomas' sharp humor and candid views would make for a memorable evening.
"I think the real cause of our financial catastrophe is Republicans," she said at one point in the night, drawing applause. Read More.

"Five Gays Blast Good Morning America"
"The famed sex columnist Dan Savage saw it similarly. “I think it's a ridiculous double standard,” he said. “People are comfortable with us so long as we're not having sex or being sexual or doing anything that might cause someone who is uncomfortable with the idea of gay sex to have to wrestle with mental images of gay sex. It's one thing to be gay like Neil Patrick Harris on the Tony Awards (culturally gay). It's another thing to be gay like Adam Lambert was on the American Music Awards (sexually gay). Americans can handle gay people, they can look at us on TV, but they still have issues with gay desire, and they have a hard time looking at that on TV.”

Skidboot is a famous dog. There used to be a show called Pet Star on
Animal Planet. Every week animals would perform tricks and the audience would vote for the best. At the end all the animals that won the weekly show got to compete for the best of the best and win $10,000 for their owner. Skidboot won the big prize.
Leaving shortly for a weekend getaway. Gonna have a thanksgiving buffet dinner this afternoon cooked by a CIA trained chef..... YUM!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

On the subject of gay performance
Just got back from Vegas, The wife got tickets to a circ du soli spinoff called The Rev. It was created by one of the Circ designers. Great spectecal. Water ballet combined with acrobatics highwire and clowns.
A friend, who is gay, and a coworker of the wife, recomended it. The first 10 min of the show has a dozen young hard bodied men dancing and performing. They were bare chested and dressed in the minimum to keep the show family friendly. I turned to the wife and and told her. "Now we know why Tom was so enamoured with the show"
It was a great performance and a lot of fun. we had tickets in the splash zone where you get some interaction with the performers. most of it was in the form of getting wet from them splashing water on you.
Oh and the young woman who swam up to where I was sitting and reached out to me with yearning desire wasn't bad either.

Performers often mask their lack of talent using shock and vulgarity to excite the jackasses in the audience.
Great talents should not do that. Adam Lambert is a great talent. He needs to emulate real great talents, not Madonna and Brittany Spears.

William Shakespeare, 1599
Enter the KING
WESTMORELAND. O that we now had here
But one ten thousand of those men in England
That do no work to-day!
KING. What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I love the St. Crispian's Day speech. I suppose every actor worth his salt has tried it at one time or another.
Willie gave them such wonderful words to "Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue". If I remember that play had a pretty good soliloquy in it as well. :-)

"Thanksgiving, the Soldiers, and that Eleanor Roosevelt Quote"
"If you want to know what powerful women are up against, this photo gives you an example. I’m thankful that Michelle Obama can rise above, even as Google has seen fit to apologize for the image rising to high rank on its search. It would leave me speechless, except that I remember well what Hillary Clinton had to go through during her reign as first lady (and well beyond, let me add). The images weren’t racist, but the misogyny and sexist slaps were equally insulting. Powerful women get this all the time. Judge Sotomayor knows all about it. But you can’t keep strong women down. We are undaunted by the deluge.

zazu schlemiel........
The movie industry became increasingly ambivalent about her; while many had supported her in the primary, the HUAC investigation of the film colony was at a fever pitch and had “torn the community apart,” as she recalled the schism. Ronald Reagan remained one of her staunchest allies. But near the end of the campaign, his future wife, Nancy Davis, took him to a Nixon rally, where he heard the actress Zasu Pitts rail against the Pink Lady. He was converted on the spot. Though Reagan’s defection was apparently never known to Helen, he hosted a clandestine impromptu fundraising dinner for Nixon shortly after the Pitts speech. While a relatively few small donations came in to the Douglas campaign, only a handful of Hollywood celebrities wanted to be publicly associated with her, and in stark contrast to all of her previous congressional campaigns she was unable to coordinate a single movie star gala. Only the diehard loyalists—Myrna Loy and Eddie Cantor—came forward enthusiastically. Instead, it was Nixon who garnered the most Hollywood support with such bigwigs as Cecil B. DeMille, Howard Hughes, Anne Baxter, John Wayne, Rosalind Russell, and dozens more

I'm angry at myself and angry at Expedia.
Earlier in the week I ordered airplane tickets for Tuesday so that Stinky and I could go pick-up our car. I fully intended to leave home before dawn with Toots driving us to the Charlotte airport.
Yesterday, I had an email from my brother asking what my travel arrangements were as he is going to pick us up at the Akron-Canton airport. He, of course, was supposedly cc'd on the Expedia itinerary, but that never reached him.
No problem, I simply went to my copy and started a cut and paste. Suddenly, I saw all the times were p.m. rather than a.m.. Sheesh, no, make that a double sheesh.
When I booked the damned things I specifically checked the box for an a.m. departure. And, leading the list, they had stuck in a 6:10p.m. flight. So I cancelled it and rebooked on a different airline.
This time, the same anomaly occurred with p,m. flights right in there with the morning ones. And, it wasn't caused by Expedia sorting by price as the prices for these particular flights were the same.
So, that leaves me out about $300 because of their programming and my poor eyesight compounded by my practice of giving times on a 24-hour clock.

"Another Helping of FDR Please"
"President Obama has produced a credible, if not exactly inspired Thanksgiving Proclamation.
Most of the statement relies on the usual boilerplate language employed by our recent presidents, although Obama's message is a bit more anthropological than those of his predecessors – referring to the first Thanksgiving as "a harvest celebration between European settlers and indigenous communities."
The president also tosses in some universalism: "As Americans, we hail from every part of the world. While we observe traditions from every culture, Thanksgiving Day is a unique national tradition we all share. Its spirit binds us together as one people, each of us thankful for our common blessings."
And, of course, there's the call "to express appreciation to those whose lives enrich our own; and to share our bounty with others."
When all is said and done, however, Obama's proclamation is no more poetic, and no more adventurous, than those issued by George W. Bush."

another excerpt from the article sturge linked:
"Five years after the historic 1950 California match, Chotiner spoke to a Republican National Committee school for campaign workers about the Douglas-Nixon race and political strategy for the future. It would be one of many secret lectures Chotiner would give to “GOP schools” and where he would meet the protégés who would succeed him: Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. His 14,000-word syllabus, which became a legendary GOP dirty tricks manifesto, laid out a simple formula: “Discredit your opponent before your own candidate gets started…associate your opponent with an unpopular idea or organization, with just a suggestion of treason…above all, attack, attack, attack, never defend.”

whilst perusing the stuff on chotiner, atwater et al, came upon this about rove. interesting take on how he affected the dembats.
"He had Democrats running around in circles for years, afraid of their own shadows, looking over their shoulders for fear that Karl Rove might be standing behind them. No plan was so good that Rove could not foil it; no plot was so secure that Rove could not divine it; no victory was so assured that Rove could not turn it into defeat. It was all poppycock of course, but in politics perception was reality, and that was the perception. Rove won elections not because he was a good strategist, but because he gave birth to today's weak-kneed Democratic political class.
Karl Rove indeed deserves a place in the pantheon of great American evil strategists, with the likes of Mark Hanna and Lee Atwater. Rove defeated Democrats not by out-organizing them as Hanna did, or by out-sliming them as Atwater did, but by convincing them he was the Devil. He then sat back and watched as they defeated themselves. In a way, Rove was the most insidious evil strategist of them all."

ree, there's also something a wee bit unseemly about the news stories, the hype, the fomented excitement alongside the reality of families losing homes, jobs to an economy like that... and the other rather silent reality of families being torn apart from within and without by an over-extended war.
someone here (solar?) was asking why aren't we acting like we have in the past during a war, why aren't we being called to sacrifice a little bit here on the homefront? seems our current patriotic duty is only to consume and rack up big bills wrapped in the flag.

patd,
we were told in the last administration that the most patriotic thing we could do next to joining up to fight the war was to go out and shop. If we don't do that then the terrorists win. Remember?

Yes; and only part of it. Everyday that passes more, and more are losing their homes. We haven't even had one thread about the lost ones....we are throwing our money away also in that we have 800 bases around the world...most that we don't need...lots of$ to support the personal to maintain them...

It's easy to start a country:
The hard part is to back it up with force....then U can write the laws. constitution to make the original people illegals, and minorities......
No one hear has said anything about the NY judge that ruled against a bank for playing games with a home owner that was in forecloseure...after may, many months of refusing, to negotiate with the home owner,,the judge ruled against...West Bank...for 295K dollars..the lady got her paid in full, from a very pissed of Judge...
THIS story should be airing every ten munuets ; so that the banks can see what a real activist judge looks like......instead of running the story about the White House party Crashers...wtf...is important to this country????

Jamie,
Rainier park area is beautiful year around. I assume you enter from the west (Ashford). imo, that's a much more scenic trip than from the SE (Packwood).
I couldn't help but look through your family pix. I know you enjoy genealogy and seeing some of the older photos reminded me of a friend's gen blog. She enjoys writing too and does a good job incorporating her writing and researching skills with her old family photos into one of her several blogs.

I have been up to my eyeballs in another engineering project. After setting up the jigs and milling equipment , I have been making dozens and dozens of plastic parts. In conjunction with this project, I embarked on a patent search. I think I may be able to get the first step done in filing for a patent.
Whether I missed missed it or not remains to be seen, but my working model is taking shape on the floor down at the "Spark Lab ", and it is really fucking cool.

Anyone in my age bracket, remembers the murder of President Kennedy, the shooting of President Reagan, the two attempts on President Ford..I hope there is some way to hold the morons who evaded White House Security accountable....

OD,
I'm really glad this couple found the holes in security, and I don't necessarily blame the Secret Service. Better them than someone with more deadly intent.
Obama has had a record number of threats, the fact anyone could get through shows a real problem.
