It's a trillion dollars OVER TEN YEARS, by the way. But critics like to make it sound like the House health care bill, passed over the weekend, would cost that much right away.

Those who decry spending a trillion dollars a decade to expand health insurance are not so vocal about similar spending levels for our aimless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their combined cost now happens to be on the verge of reaching $1 trillion -- in less than ten years.

Oh, and then there's this -- the Congressional Budget Office, the source cited for the health bill's cost, actually predicts that after factoring in the tax provisions and spending reductions in the House bill, it would actually reduce the deficit by $104 billion.

  3. Hilarious! Thanks for these links, Pat! The WaPo led me to a broken link at The Hill, which I then searched and found this, which just proves Helen is THE BEST!:

Helen Thomas: If only you got to pick the rumors about you

Longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas is miffed at Garry Trudeau after he portrayed her as one tough broad in his Doonesbury cartoon strip last week.

But it’s not because he depicted the dean of the White House press corps telling self-important TV correspondent Roland Hedley to “Get the hell out of my face” when he brought two visitors to meet her in the White House briefing room.

No, it was because Hedley told the visitors the “legendary UPI reporter [has] been here since the Truman administration! Some say she was Truman’s lover.”

Truman’s lover? Puh-lease. Thomas likes to think she could do better than that.

“I wish he’d said I was Jack Kennedy’s lover,” said Thomas, who began covering the White House when President Kennedy took office in January, 1961.

Thomas, who will celebrate her 87th birthday next month, left UPI in 2000 and now writes a syndicated column for Hearst Newspapers.

"For Opponents of Abortion, a Victory in Health Care Vote"

"Bishops implored their priests and parishioners to call lawmakers. Conservative Democrats negotiating over the issue with party leaders often expressed their desire to meet the bishops’ criteria, according to many people involved in the talks. On Oct. 8 three members of the bishops conference wrote on its behalf to lawmakers, “If the final legislation does not meet our principles, we will have no choice but to oppose the bill.”

On Sunday, some abortion rights advocates lashed out at the bishops. “It was an unconscionable power play,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, accusing the bishops of “interceding to put their own ideology in the national health care plan.”

  7. sturge, might be some comfort to them to know the bill has an effective date of 2013 and no doubt allows exec agencies a few more years to come up with rules to implement it. they have at least a good 5 years to live it up.

  8. Yup Mr Crawford - No big deal.. Just a Trillion dollar ++++ Tax increase on the American People. Now that is the way to build a big Big BIG Governement !!

And where do you think these TAX increases will reveal themselves.... Do not be a fool now.

And we will funnel the money away from the inovations that have driven the desire for this wonderful Healthcare system. Just Imagine if this happened in 1965 - You will still have exploratory Surgery instead of that MRI that many are so angry with...

What are we going to miss?

There is a better way - Innovation is the answer but Sadly the brain trust in Washington is Politcal lawyers and not bright enough to go beyond the imagination of control.

  21. wiki on tort reform:

Tort reform refers to proposed changes in the civil justice system that would reduce tort litigation or damages. Tort is a system for compensating wrongs and harm done by one party to another's person, property or other protected interests (e.g. reputation, under libel and slander laws). Tort reform advocates focus on personal injury in particular.

In the United States tort reform is a contentious political issue. US tort reform advocates propose, among other things, procedural limits on the ability to file claims, and capping the awards of damages. According to Forbes reporter Daniel Fisher, tort reform is "A catchall phrase for legislative measures designed to make it harder for individuals to sue businesses."

  35. Also Ping

Tort Reform has been enacted in 37 states and since most suits are brought on the state level that is where the reform should be. Only in the military and Veterans hospitals employ doctors directly.

As it is, tort reform in the above states have had virtually no effect on medical costs in those states.

You own a business, have a few employees with company vans, they hit someone in the company van, the injured party sues YOU because you own the van. Sure stinks to be you if you're just covering overhead, and now you might have to lay-off an employee or two. Not every "business" is a international billion-dollar operation.

    DL

And most businesses carry insurance for just such purposes and states have those "tort reform" laws to decrease liability unless you say kept on a driver with a drunk driving record.

Again, this would have no effect at the FEDERAL level so why scream for making it part of a health care bill.

  43. The United States GDP (low estimate) is something like 12,000 billion dollars per year. Our expenditure on health care is 16-pct of the GDP, or 1,920 billion dollars per year.

If healthcare reform can eliminate waste, abuse and fraud to the extent that we can halve the difference between our healthcare expenditures and those of the rest of the world's industrialized powers, we can save 633 thousand million dollars per year.

Ten year savings will be 6,330 thousand million dollars.

That seems like a pretty good argument for healthcare reform, especially if we will be adding 10s of millions of people to the healthcare roles.

one million million dollars is one trillion dollars

spend $1,000 per day and it will take you about three years to go through $1,000,000 dollars.

spend $1,000 per day and it will take about 3,000 years to go through a billion.

spend $1,000,000 per day and it will take about 3,000 years to go through a trillion

this year, we'll spend about 2,000 million million dollars on healthcare. For lazy people, it's the easy to say $2-trillion.

  69. Pat, Flatus,

Real time cost of war. Chart, and a cost ticker...play around in it:

    http://www.nationalpriorities.org/

    About The Cost of War:

To date, $915.1 billion dollars have been allocated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The national, state, and local numbers we provide are based on the total approved amounts through the end of Fiscal Year 2009.

In addition to this approved amount, the FY2010 budget shows a $130 billion request for more war spending. This would bring total war spending in Iraq and Afghanistan to more than $1 trillion. When all FY2010 war-related amounts are approved, we will adjust the counter so that it reaches the new total at the end of FY2010.

  71. I cannot accept the spin Craig because there is NO CBO report on the effect of this bill on premium rates nor does the Bill show exactly who will be taxed. If lower costs is the central goal, then by what logic should we endorse a plan that does not vet the projected results?

When has there ever been a bill of such scope that didn't wandered far from projected savings? I talked this morning with representitives of Empire Blue who said for the public to prepare for increase rates for both small business plans and single pay plans. I don't know how people can hype the savings or the actual costs reform will advance without taking a serious look at what this proposal will do with both cost and responsiveness, let alone coverage.

Dems promised to cover all as a way for insurers to keep a lid on premiums and lift restrictions on pre-existing conditions. Dems broke their word when they couldn't figure out how to pay for such a promise. They promoted profit margins the insurers get as the great evil when fact check shows these claims were false. Let's stop the false projections. It only makes matter worse when reality bites....

In other news. Iran will try Americans as spies with no word on Iran response to nuclear deal. And see this gem below as Iran prepares for the worst...

    http://www2.debka.com/headline.php?hid=6362

Yemeni Iranian-supplied militants down a Saudi fighter..

    More terror blasts in Pakistan....

Chavez tells his people to prepare for war with Columbia and US forces......

What? And let me get this right. The BBC had this video of members who attended the Mosque where the shooter attended and some said they had no sympathy for the victims. Did the BBC then pull the video?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npAvM-VWwhc

    It sure looks that way...

Also Fact Check while debunking the most serious claims made by Republicans regarding Medicare solvency and the savings from real defensive medicine reform, show huge problems regarding both issues. Just because one side exaggerates, doesn't mean the other side gets a free pass. I note that Fact Check in the past has supported the idea that this reform will jack up rates for many, just not the 100% some Republican attack ads claim.

Patd, I'm sure the Stimulus and Tarp deals have far more "missing" money. Also the Iraqi's own recently released study showed far fewer deaths, mostly at the hands of Muslims killing Muslims. The number quoted above is BS. How much spent in Iraq and "war" led to revenue or job growth? I love how some say the Stimulus money will create savings down the road thus reducing the cost per job, but when looking at the DOD, context is limited to what fits talking points the best.

The VA is great care in my opinion. When I broke my ankle a year ago, I was treated as good as any private medical care in the world. Better than most. The operation to put screws in my ankle cost $50. It cost about $50 for each subsquient visit also so I think it was a total of $200. I got a wheel chair and crutches and a walker for that $50 on the day of my operation also.

dollars cents Worldwide poll: Vast majority say capitalism not workingDissatisfaction with capitalism is widespread around the globe 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall that heralded the demise of European communism, a poll released Monday showed.

Only 11 percent of people surveyed across 27 countries thought free market capitalism is working well, while nearly a quarter -- 23 percent -- said the system is "fatally flawed." A bare majority, 51 percent, believed its problems can be solved with more regulation and reform, the poll said.

In only the United States (25 percent) and Pakistan (21 percent), did more than one in five people agree that capitalism works well in its current form, the poll conducted for BBC World said.

The survey of 29,033 adults comes after the worst global financial crisis since the 1930s Great Depression and amid celebrations of the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which abruptly ended the Cold War. More charts at:

Dem Women Threaten Health Care Passage Over Stupak Amendment

"Not even George W. Bush and the Republican Congress tried to do what the Democratic majority under Speaker Pelosi, the first woman in history to hold that position, did this weekend. That’s how bad the betrayal is.

I’m hearing that Pres. Obama evidently made pledges to certain House members that the Stupak amendment would not be in the final bill. He needs to keep that promise. But in the end, it’s up to us to make sure that with or without the President, women do not lose their full civil rights under the law.

Oh, and by the way, Sen. Claire McCaskill doesn’t know what she’s talking about (brief thoughts here, with more to come on the podcast). And since she’s so close to the President there is reason to worry.

None of us are taking any chances.

“I am confident that when it comes back from the conference committee that that language won’t be there,” Wasserman Schultz said during an appearance on MSNBC. “And I think we’re all going to be working very hard, particularly the pro-choice members, to make sure that’s the case.” – The Hill"

    "Paranoia Strikes Deep"

"In fact, the party of Limbaugh and Beck could well make major gains in the midterm elections. The Obama administration’s job-creation efforts have fallen short, so that unemployment is likely to stay disastrously high through next year and beyond. The banker-friendly bailout of Wall Street has angered voters, and might even let Republicans claim the mantle of economic populism. Conservatives may not have better ideas, but voters might support them out of sheer frustration.

And if Tea Party Republicans do win big next year, what has already happened in California could happen at the national level. In California, the G.O.P. has essentially shrunk down to a rump party with no interest in actually governing — but that rump remains big enough to prevent anyone else from dealing with the state’s fiscal crisis. If this happens to America as a whole, as it all too easily could, the country could become effectively ungovernable in the midst of an ongoing economic disaster.

The point is that the takeover of the Republican Party by the irrational right is no laughing matter. Something unprecedented is happening here — and it’s very bad for America."

"Westboro Baptist Church Protests Outside Obama Girls' School"

"Westboro Baptist Church, the fringe-of-the-fringe anti-gay group famous for protesting at military funerals and claiming that God is punishing the country for its tolerance of homosexuality, was spotted this morning protesting outside Sidwell Friends, the school attended by Sasha and Malia Obama.

Protesters were carrying signs with anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans, slowing down traffic all along Wisconsin Avenue this morning.

One member, Megan Phelps-Roper, posted a picture on Twitter of the protest.

Westboro Baptist Church, founded by Fred Phelps and made up mostly of Phelps family members, has garnered national attention for carrying signs such as "Thank God for 9/11" and protesting at funerals, including that of Matthew Shepard, the student who was killed in 1998 because he was gay."

"Republicans Giving Women 'Back Of The Hand Treatment': Wasserman-Schultz"

"The Republicans who shouted down and continuously interrupted female members of the House testifying in favor of the health care bill on Saturday were giving women what amounted to the "back of the hand treatment," Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.) said Monday.

The abortion-rights champion and senior Democrat criticized House Republicans in a conference call with reporters and called the behavior the most disrespectful she has seen during her 17 years in elected office.

"We already had a clear sense that Republicans were opposed to our efforts to advance women's health," Wasserman-Schultz said. "Now we know they're opposed to letting women voice their opinions on health care as well."

As members of the Democratic Women's Caucus tried to list from the House floor how the health care reform bill would offer women important protections they currently lack, Republicans -- led by Georgia Rep. Tom Price -- constantly interrupted them.

"I object!" the Republicans shouted over and over while Reps. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) and Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio) spoke. Acting speaker Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) couldn't get the Republicans to stop."

    Every thing is about the abortion issue-every thing.!!! just keep listening and reading between the lines...everything else is just camouflage. The way to end it..and it will end.!! maybe 50-75 years, is b/c of education of the sciences...evolution, and the ability of all sciences to work together;

Anthropology, and Archeology, and Geologist, the genetic sciences, etc, etc. are coming up everyday with new proof of the real universe, and what is in it..including us.......would you believe that one of these are on the trail of how we came about...it might have been the we were acids on meteors that came to earth, and then it was the primordial soup that they talk about......there is so much info out there....

That's why Im against Baptism, and any indoctrination of innocents..they are brain washed from the start...but more , and more are finding out the truth.

I believe that there is a thinning out of Religion ; that is going on right now....there is so mamny new ones that they are fragmented..the last ones to go will be the organized mob families, like the Catholic Church, and the other big ones

Im going to have to sa y that the Pope is also a flea-head..gonna start a little club list of these not so rare animals...

But then we wouldn't have had the fun of the Republicans confirming the old adage:

It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and prove it.

  128. I'm opposed to overpopulation, and am doing my best to keep from spawning. Please find below the 8 top tips for evading fructive events.
    1. take cold showers,
    2. think about either michele bachmann or mao's bowel movements,
    3. eat a clove of raw garlic clove or two before bed (also good for warding off vampires and nematodes)
    4. drink 12 cups of coffee every day,
    5. listen to a recording of sarah palin's voice,
    6. Instead of #1, never bathe at all.
    7. if all else fails : wear a 4 mil 45 gallon Industrial trash bag (kinduva tight fit for me, but it might work for you other guys)
    8. If you keep breaking the bag, you could try Origen's solution. BTW, Origen was condemned by the RC church for heresy for a thousand years, but now he's been rehabilitated and drafted into being a Father of the Church.

It just shows, there is hope that someday there will be a St. SolarCrete and a St. tonyb39.

  130. I used to be an optimist. But, seeing how Congress acts, and the Administrations ineptitude, I've reached a different conclusion.

    We're totally ferkakdeh.

  132. I did a soapbox alert that Craig wrote about. You can find it at
    http://www.congress.org/soapbox/alert/14326421

They provide the emails but unfortunately you can't just sign a letter and send. Each must write their own message. Sorry, I know it is much easier to sign and click.

XR And don't take Viagra even if the government pays for it because the women's birth control isn't covered.

  134. Let's see. If the republican are correct with their $$$TRILL!ON figure for the Health Care Reform Bill, and if this figure is ove 10 years, my math tells me that that makes the cost a suspiciously round, if not morbidly obese, $$100 B!LL!ON per year. Divided by a population of 320 M!LL!ON Americans and babybush/walmart -imported illegal aliens (the latter paying $$ in, but not getting $$ out), we arrive at a rough figure of $310 per year, per person. $310 per year is roughly 80c/day/per person. That is, if the highly suspicious $$100B!LL!ON per year is accurate.

pong, you are breaking my heart with your fog keng bleats about the cost. So, you won't be able to afford the Mercedes Benz with the platinum dashboard buttons. I guess it's better that people die, so you can buy the Lamborghini with the russian sable head rests, and the diamond encrusted caviar cup holders.

80 cents is gonna break your ass. Cheezewhiz Kreitz, the your suffering is killing me.

    wadda selfish merde.

  141. Sea,

I just received confirmation to the liberty site; by email.

Posted by: SolarCrete Author Profile Page | November 9, 2009 8:23 PM

  142. Okay, St. SoleilCrete, it is.

Wooden wanna makeya cringe. Trillions of Romans like Mr. Bloggington will light petro-parafin candles to you, keeping you awake all night, constantly whining in your eaqr that they need this or that, and you, being the Patron Saint of Gunnite would have to get outa bed and answer them. Even if you were, at that magic moment. making more saints with uh.... Who's your honey this week ?

Yes, 4 mil is the minimum strength for a big mega-macho fella like me. I think it's the thickest and least uhhhh, comfy that they make.

Jamie, enormously studly guys never need Viagra. We need titanium steel and Kevlar codpieces. ( :>D))<

    make no difference the language,
We is sure as hell screwed.
and you can put that in any language or dialect and I'll say
    "Yep"
But where did a good cajun boy like you learn Yiddish?
    And not even polite Yiddish.

Kinda reminds me of my command of Spanish.

  145. Oh poo !

I ruined a perfectly good trashbag conceit by bringing up the titanium.

Posted by: xrepublican Author Profile Page | November 9, 2009 8:45 PM

  146. Ah Jamie, right you are, but this wasd promised during the campaign and the republicans had their chance to make up lies about it then. They instead chose to rant that the candidate was an Indonesian from Kenya who didn't have a Hawaiian birth certificate. The American people decisively rejected the skrooball republican alarms and tocsins, and chose the Obama team.

I have NO sympathy. If republicans don't like what Americans want, they can move to Viet Nam.

Posted by: xrepublican Author Profile Page | November 9, 2009 8:54 PM

  147. Well I don't even have time to read all the back comments.
Damn, Bin Laden and our cowardly reaction to him.
If I'm going to have morning coffee with the wife, I'm going to have to get up at quarter to 4 in the morning. She flys out at 6 so leaves the house at 4:30.

    early bed time tonight
    Night all

  148. The anti-Semitic, anti-Black AZ viper militia, the racist tbaggerattacks on Blacks, Hispanics, and Jews, the repeated vilent talk, the pushing, shoving ath the town hall meetings, the shouting down at town hall meetings and in Congress. leads me to think that it is about time for Congress' police, the Secret Service and the FBI to decapitate the organizations that are causing the trouble. These republican creeps are just children of the klan committing hate crimes, and plotting the overthrow of the US by force of arms.

re phelps : let the republican westgas church people keep ranting at military funerals until some mourners rise and take them out. No prosecutor in the country would be foolish enough to prosecute the people who blow these scumbags away. Where is the Ohio NG when we need them ?

  149. Good night, Jack.

Thanks for the pic of the Lambo, Mr. Bloggingham. Imagine it with sable and ermine trimmings.

  152. FYI.....

Stupak bunked with Ensign at C Street. That's who were dealing with. Another low life piece of scum who didn't want Ensign stoned for Adultery even though the Bible calls for stoning of Adulterers.

That's just one part of the Bible the Right Wing Christians don't want to apply to them, but for everyone else they have no problem with stoning them.

One more false D that needs to be removed from office.

I am at war with my congressman, Harry Teague. The one term congressman sided with the republicans and voted against the house health care bill. My husband's cancer is thrilled!
