White House Joins Blog Wars

| | Comments (176)

In a sign that President Obama's foes are succeeding, the White House is going viral to combat them. Normally, you'd think a direct response wouldn't be worth the risk of elevating bogus claims. But on whitehouse.gov the Administration is using Internet tools to counterattack.

Obama aides singled out what they called "Fox lies" -- and show host Glenn Beck -- in a post about the Olympics flap. Working with the Democratic National Committee, they are distributing internet videos accusing Republicans of "scaremongering."

During the presidential campaign, the Obama team was effective at countering smears and rumors on the Web. But they've held back since taking office. Although the Administration will probably get some flak for directly responding on its official site, Obama staffers must realize they have no choice but to join the fray.

Dark Lord, while it might be polite to stay above the fray, it's about time the administration started fighting back a bit. The rhetoric is getting wilder and wilder. Course I have no way of knowing this, but I'd pretty much bet money on the fact that Secret Service has their hands more than full trying to keep this president safe.

DLB, "Obama staffers must realize they have no choice but to join the fray." I have to agree with Craig. Everyone is on the internet now, it's where things get communicated, at least during working hours. Unrefuted lies become the truth in the minds of many - considering the gravity of the issues in the public forum, letting them stand doesn't make sense. I think they have to engage stupidity where it appears.

" The fossil puts to rest the notion, popular since Darwin's time, that a chimpanzee-like missing link—resembling something between humans and today's apes—would eventually be found at the root of the human family tree. Indeed, the new evidence suggests that the study of chimpanzee anatomy and behavior—long used to infer the nature of the earliest human ancestors—is largely irrelevant to understanding our beginnings. If these wing-nuts want to say outrageous things and they go unchallenged by those who have the horsepower (bloggers are quickly dismissed), then they will become facts and the lies will stick. I just don't want the WH or others to get down in the gutter and spread equal and opposite lies. Stick to the truth and the facts and say it loud and clear and loud and clear over and over again. 22. Pogo, the problem with the Dells and HPs of the world is that they all use proprietary components; something I absolutely refuse to buy into.

I've seen monitors from reputable manufacturers for around $130 for a 22-incher.

Max, only reluctantly do I build systems for people in the family--I just don't want to hold their hands every time they forget where the power switch is. And, if I use system-builders' software, the support burden falls to me.

blue, how right you are that people who oppose healthcare for all, who fight pollution standards, who promote war, who cut funds for feeding the needy just to name a few are indeed not for life, but by their words and actions are definitely pro-death.

however, giving them the benefit of doubt, being pro-death maybe is their way to fight the problem of overpopulation.

  34. blue - this kind of thing happened twice in my writing days.. twice we had a referendum about sovereignty and twice entire families would split, some never speaking to each other again. I can't even bring myself to speak to some of those people that until Dubya's election I was pretty close to. I used to hear from college professors after a particularly difficult teacher's strike that they couldn't believe they had worked side by side,, day by day, with 'complete sh**ts'... We don't think this kind of thing can enter out daily lives, but it DOES.

Am I wrong or do you NEVER hear of democrats talking about armed insurrection to 'take back' their America. You sure hear 'em talking about 'just wait till the next election!' That's the way it's supposed to be. And they're really great about talking about protecting the constitution, unless it happens to be that section that deals with elections and winners of said elections.

"Friggin' GOP isn't even in power and they still frame the debate. You Dems SUCK."

Amen. You didn't see ronald reagan lie supine in the face of Dem criticisms. And, Bill Clinton had his instant response team. The bushcheneyrumdumbrovefeithnovacklimbaughmurdochscooterbremmerabramovgonzalesoreilly team spouted lies non-stop.

If you want 8 years in the WH, you need to control the civic conversation. You can't get anything if you let the terrorists stay on the offensive. The President's team has to undercut the most effective returdlican spoutspersons by indirection and remorseless wedging. Two examples, the V. P. invite limp haw to "come out of the closet and and debate like a man", and give daily one-liners attacking the rushian's secret sex life. The Press Sec'y could refer to newsCrap's faux news as "that foreigner's propaganda mill", as in "we will not be stampeded by that foreigner's propaganda mill." Just as in judo, the Book of the 5 Rings, and the Art of War, Dems can use the strengths of the republicans, chauvinism, machismo, and bigotry, against them. The point is to hit them hard where they least expect it, separating them from their supporters, and bash again from another direction before they can finish answering the first attack. Then repeat.

Knocking down giant philistines just ain't that hard, but you have to first recognize that you can't negotiate with terrorists or republicans, because their interests are not served by compromising, and their goal is not a just and healthy world where love can thrive. Dems must get out of the academic and collegial mode if they intend on get anything worth while done. The first step is the hardest. Remember republican 'Engine Charlie' Wilson's dictum : "Come out fast with a kick in the crotch." It worked for osama bin ladin and his fellow America-haters in the bushcheneyrumdumb junta, and if it worked for America's enemies, it can work for Americanism ! God Bless America !

  44. CBob, I hope your gourd growing friend survived some of the recent fires in the Temecula area. If he's not in business today, it's more likely that he was bought out by wine growers as the place is Napa Valley south, and you know no one can grow anything but grapes in that part of the world due to the cost of land.

RR, be prepared to pay for your "free samples" of wine now. Very few wineries provide tasting samples anymore so you know what you're buying. Some places charge up to $10 for four or five samples one ounzes with a little tray of cheese and crackers. We were in Temecula three years ago and that was the biggest shock -- paying for the tasting samples.

If it were only elected officials this health care bill would have already passed WITH a public option. It's Murdoch's band of jokers (and their rabid followers) that are framing and inflaming this debate. Add up all the media that Murdoch owns and those idiots are reaching more wingnuts than any elected official could. And I'll tell ya, I'm not even convinced those guys are republicans.. they're hired because they can talk, and talk and talk and talk.. and the more outrageous they are, the better it is for Faux and friends. All they do is hope their ratings stay high (again, better if they're outrageous) and keep towing the party line. I agree they're pervs, but what I was getting at is it's one thing to take on republicans in either house, it,s another to take on idiots on the airwaves. Talk radio is a scary entity these days.

  72. WASHINGTON - Proposed regulations would require power plants, factories and refineries to reduce greenhouse gases by installing the best available technology and improving energy efficiency whenever a facility is significantly changed or built.

The Environmental Protection Agency proposal announced Wednesday applies to any industrial plant that emits at least 25,000 tons of greenhouse gases a year.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33117003/ns/us_news-environment/

Jeff Holmstead, a former top EPA air pollution official who is now a lobbyist for the energy industry, said the agency was trying to "fit a square peg into a round hole."

  73. Of course, once elected, republipols immediately embark on a series of adventures with any sort of object that possesses an orifice. Occasionally, these adventures involve adultery with men, women, or young boys, which usually ends the republipol life cycle. At this point, the owners of the republican franchise begin the search for a replacement old goat.

On a very rare occasion, an owner among the industrial cartels will decide that the employees are not doing a good enough job. onsuch occasions the owner might descend from Valhalla to provide the republipols with 'hands on' leadership. This explains the sudden meteoric rise of bill frist in the US Senate, and the sudden meteoric demise of inexpensive 'managed health'.

    Tylenol

When it comes to violence on the left it tends to be ecoterrorism directed at businesses or activities. People do get hurt, but there is rarely a "person specific" kind of target. There was a stretch when it was anti government, such as the weathermen, SDS, etc in the late 60s and early 70s but again not aimed at a particular person or group.

This whole right wing vile talk of threats of revolution and assassination is very different. It has a real religious fervor to it as a sort of conquering crusade. It is mean, ugly, ignorant, and very, very depressing, particularly when politicians seem to encourage the lies and attacks.

  79. I'll try to be brief, but wanted to relate a telephone call I received last night.

First, I answered to dead air, followed by a female voice, who mispronounced my last name (That's not a big deal, but we've had a U.S. President with that name, and it's not that hard to figure out.)

The lady asked me to stay on the line to listen to a message from Dick Morris and then hold on for a survey question. (Sooner or later someone in this call is going to ask me for money.)

So, I listened to Mr. Morris introduce himself, then proceed to tell me that President Obama is leading the country down the road to Socialism, blah, blah, blah, about to ruin the world's greatest health care delivery system, blah, blah, and some outfit that defeated healthcare reform before needs help doing that again, blah, blah, blah.

Finally a male voice comes on the phone and asks if I'm still there. "Yes, I'm here."

    Q. "Do you agree that Obama is lying and that his health care proposal will provide coverage to illegal immigrants?"

    A. "No"

Caller: "You don't think he's lying."

    A. "No, I think Dick Morris is more apt to lie to me than the President is."

Caller: "Okay thank you for your opinion." Click.

I wish I was thinking quicker. I would have added that Morris told me three lies during the course of that recorded message. I wasn't really keeping track of what Morris was saying other than the snippets I've listed here, but the call went for more than 20 seconds, so at his normal rate, Morris would have hit his third lie within that time frame.

Deaths from lack of Insurance is between 18,000 and 40,000 depending on who you include.

We have sacrificed lives and treasure for those lives on 9/11. We have done nothing but give more money to the insurance companies to continue to mistreat and kill.

  85. There's not a lot of good news out there right now, but there is this:

    http://www.pollster.com/blogs/assessing_the_gop_brand.php

"How weak is the Republican brand right now? ... But is the party really worse off than previous opposition parties at this point in the election cycle?

"... I pulled all the relevant polling on approval of the party in Congresss and party favorability from the Roper iPoll database for the periods leading up to the four most recent midterms (1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006). ...

The overall finding is simple -- the GOP's standing relative to the Democrats on both measures is worse than any opposition party in the sample. For instance, the Pew data show that the Republicans are currently viewed more negatively than any minority party in the previous four midterms in terms of both net favorables and the difference in net favorables between parties"

What's all that talk about the GOP taking back both houses of Congress in '10? Not if there's any validity to this and it holds 'til then.

Is Obama trying to mimic Chavez. Go ahead and let's see if the WH Blog filters the comment thread, or faces FACT CHECK.

I remember those DNC letters. Aren't you concerned Craig that the Democrats are going into the journalism field. Will they be avle to protect their sources? If I am correct, Obama was successful in deflecting his use of race, his associations with the infamous and spinning his projected policies. I can't wait......

On the up side, so far Obama is walking a tight rope on Iran. It would be wrong in the next two weeks for Republicans to jump on his back over their fears even with new polls showing the majority thinks he has been too weak. This isn't mopping a floor people and the diplomacy is intense. I guess that history will show Hillary influenced the very recent flexing the BIg Stick. The goal of course is a South African-like inspection.

While I applaud any gains in curtailing the Mullahs, let us not forget both terrorism support and the following:

    http://counterterrorismblog.org/2009/10/print/transatlantic_lawmakers_sign_d.php

Nukes are most important and then their delivery systems, but the support of terrorism and human rights abuses are serious issues that are a mandatory part of Iran rejoining the law of nations and ending sanctions.

P.S. Germany speeded up delivery of their world class Dolphin 212 subs. Israel may have five now that have the capability when armed with nuclear cruise missiles to flatten Iran. This is another element of the Big Stick that Obama has managed to merge into "pressure". Without their only AWAC that mysteriously crashed two weeks ago, Iran is presently blind to air attack. This is also another element of "pressure", Carter's brilliant remarks today not withstanding.

I rather doubt Israel will pre-empt the ongoing efforts to play Iran's bluff and today was a decent start.

If it comes to a strike, The Iranian regime should not expect the Grand Masjid will serve as cover. I can only hope that the Iranian blink in the face of renewed unity from the West. Unfortunately Iran has other secret facilities and the Brits and French have been making that more obvious. Verification is the key.

In a strange bit of news you can see at Memri Blog, the Egyptian Attorney General claims the terror cell recently broken up was near completion of an atomic bomb. What exactly that means is unknown to me. I suppose it was a dirty bomb and something was lost in translation. What exactly are you suggesting XREPUB? Please tell us all that Israel's pre-emption of Saddam was not a valid act. The Indian/Israeli pre-emption of Pakistan's program was thwarted by Reagan who warned the Pakistanis. The irony of that call should be self-evident. In fact in 2004, Obama talked about pre-empting Iran with nukes should they be necessary. We call this Obama's centrist hawk period...lol

"Love Lust and Lobster start with the same letter for a reason"

    As does Lord.
When you add up the letters in love, lust , lobster you get 15
When you take away the Lord ,4, from them you get
    15-4= 11

    again, not a coincidence

  166. "One, backed by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., would allow states to negotiate with insurers to arrange coverage for people with incomes slightly higher than the cutoff for Medicaid, the government health care program for the poor. That change was approved.

Approval was deferred on a second, which would exempt millions from a requirement to purchase insurance that is currently in the bill. As it stands, individuals and families would be required to buy coverage as long as it cost no more than 10 percent of their income, and would have to pay a penalty if they refused.

The Cantwell proposal is based on a system in Washington state that she said results in lower-cost, high-quality coverage, generally delivered through managed care, as the state uses its purchasing power in negotiations with insurers.

Republicans questioned whether the impact would be to raise insurance premiums for others, and said they were fearful the result would be to reduce health care options." AP

This was what I suggested at the start of the great debate and posted here the link to HealthyNY which is like the Washington plan. The problem I pointed out is that the cut off now is about $24,000 (also over the poverty line) so people who are not eligible making let's say, $30,000 which is still very low for many places in New York, might very well see their plan rates go up which has already appeared to happen in New York. How can people at $40,000 pay $700 per month on healthcare. That is more than 10%...lol

These people who miss the cutoff can't afford higher premiums and they need GREAT insurance because items not covered would bankrupt them and CREATE more in poverty.

I also pointed out that HealthyNY allows only one annual per three years as well as other limitations. Still, it is not bad coverage. We have another example and result in MA. I posted the plan details here months ago.

By expanding better coverage to the Poor and Lowest incomes, the Middle and Lower Middle Class(depending on the cutoff) is increasingly crunched.

What is disturbing is that this is not reform engineering but reform collage whose art cannot be judged until after the fact. In addition there is the way the numbers pan out.

HealthyNY plans for one are about three hundred dollars per month. Since NY pays the other half, you can see what it would cost without help from NYS. More than $600 per month for uno persona. To keep the cost down, NYS had to limit coverage as I explained with the recent limitation of one check up every three years. I recommended HealthyNY for the poor and presently uninsured, but that doesn't solve the increased rates this causes nor helps the plight of the Middle Class and Lower Middle Class. In fact, they will proably pay more taxes to fund the new assistance.

There is more uncertainty at work here then there is in determining the Afghanistan strategy.........most of it self induced.

    http://charliedavis.blogspot.com/2008/12/will-barack-obama-nuke-iran.html

This was actually what he floated after elected which was an idea Hillary floated during the primary and was laughed at by Obama supporters. Her he would nuke Iran if WND were used against Israel. At the time, he was getting some fire for some policy leaks regarding Israel.

The other speech in 2004 was very interesting and refers to what I call Obama's centrist hawk period. This was where I first noted Obama's foreign policy views and thought he was correct. At the time Obama still shared a similar view with Lieberman his former mentor.

Oh, I figure you're aslepp and Craig will rethread before you read this but for the record:

Give me a list and I will be happy to supply the links which I often do on a regular basis. And while you're at it you make a list of how many times I called things in advance. Of course not Obama nuking Iran because he was pissed.......

Obama did tell reporters once he would never use nukes to nail OBL, but then he strangely retracted the comment.....want the link from ABC News?

I think I gave Bob several links to carbon sequestration, but then he said it was a joke that would never happen. I gave links that said the earth was going into a cooling period and recently this was confirmed again, Links to why Ahmadinejad would win. Even links that explained why Hillary was right in her lone support of the Israeli strike on Syria.

Here's a new one. Recent bombings in Mexico (5) were by a new terror group advancing the Liberation of Earth. People and Animals. They are quite serious but for now they are using butane canisters tied together as IEDs. I can get you link if you would like, but there is a registration fee........

    1. "What exactly are you suggesting XREPUB?"

It is obvious to the most casual observer that a nuclear attack on the hidden Iranian nuke plant would create a public relations difficulty in several quarters, like Baghdad, beijing, pyongyang, Caracas, New Dehli, Tegucigalpa, and Baku. Therefore, a terribly sad accident may have to occur.

We will of course, send a big wreath, bearing the message, "So long, Mad Dog". It'll be a very sad accident, and I may even send a wreath, myself.

So, wassamadayu ? You don't unnastand Mob ?

    2. "Please tell us all that Israel's pre-emption of Saddam was not a valid act."

Whyever would I write that ? Are you nuts ?

    3. "The Indian/Israeli pre-emption of Pakistan's program was thwarted by Reagan who warned the Pakistanis."

For that reason alone, you should never capitalize the name 'reagan'.

    4. "The irony of that call should be self-evident."

Irony of reagan's call ? Yes, he was a simple-minded peacenilk doofer, with no conception of the stakes involved, or the villainy of all those South Asian tyrants of both countries. Look at Mrs Gandhi's genocidal crusades against the untouchables.

"In fact in 2004, Obama talked about pre-empting Iran with nukes should they be necessary. We call this Obama's centrist hawk period...lol"

I think you may be the only person who knows about this. Obama may not have even known about it.

If this happened, why didn't you tell debka, newsmax, and the neoconmen that Obama was a hardliner on Iran, rather than allowing them to make utter fools of themselves as they nattered on about "Hussein" Obama ?

I'll bet you purposely misled the republicans to make fools of them, didn't you ? Look, republicans are idiotic enough, they don't need your help to look foolish.
