  2. even hillary is in a party mood. she took "a detour through Dublin and Belfast - where she popped into a pub for a beer..."

    and she's not alone

"She now finds herself with one unusual, but powerful ally in the administration, Secretary of Defence Robert Gates.
Rarely have a secretary of state and a secretary of defence been on such good terms.
The department of diplomacy and the department of war have often been at war with each other, notably during President George W Bush's administration.
"Most of my career, secretaries of state and defense weren't speaking to each other," Mr Gates said at a forum on 5 October. "And it could get pretty ugly, actually."
These two secretaries meet often, speak regularly on the phone and "seem to take up permanent residence in the White House Situation Room," as Gates put it in a recent profile of Clinton published in the Washington Post."

Would a Clinton, Gates ticket be unthinkable?

    "The Public Plan, Continued"

"In the debate over health care reform, no issue has produced more fury and sound bites than the question of whether to include a government-run insurance plan. It is not indispensable, and its role would be limited. Even so, we strongly support inclusion of a public option — the bigger and stronger the better. That is the best way to give consumers more choices, inject more competition into insurance markets, hold down the cost of insurance policies, and save money for the federal budget."

    "Fie, Fatal Flaw!"

"In Springfield, he compromised so much on a health care reform bill that in the end, it merely led to a study. In Washington, he compromised so much with Senate Republicans on a bill to require all nuclear plant owners to notify state and local authorities about radioactive leaks that it simply devolved into a bill offering guidance to regulators, and even that ultimately died.

Now the air is full of complaints that Obama has been too cautious on health care, Afghanistan, filling judgeships, ending “don’t ask, don’t tell,” repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and rebuilding New Orleans; that he has conceded too much to China, Iran, Russia, the Muslim world and the banks."

  13. http://www.taylormarsh.com/2009/10/17/disgruntled-democrats/

    "Disgruntled Democrats"

"That’s because the Democratic majority and Pres. Obama are not delivering on promises and pledges through the power we gave them.

The annoyance reached critical mass when Pres. Obama underestimated and allowed Sarah Palin’s “death panel” squeal to monopolize the summer, with the tea party brawlers the next to hit, until the White House finally figured out they’d better strike back.

However, when the public weighed in on health care supporting the public option overwhelming, and leaders of the Democratic Party from Obama to Reid to the Democratic caucus were unwilling to take the reigns and run with it, the annoyance bubbled over with progressive and online activists taking over the leadership role themselves.

There’s a reason people elected Democrats. To get something done. The sad fact is that they have not delivered tangible results on very key issues even with the majority they were handed starting with health care, but also ending the Iraq war. Then there is DADT, closing Gitmo, and on and on, with Afghanistan now seen as Obama’s Iraq, as it becomes more and more unpopular."

"Lefty anger splits Dems -- and may sink them"

"Can I speak freely about the liberal whiners?" asks a well-connected Democratic strategist. "These are the same people who have never participated in, much less won, a campaign, who have no idea what it takes to maintain a majority and keep a speaker of our party, who want Obama to kowtow to the loony Left, and then they're going to be the ones who say, 'What happened?' in November 2010, when we lose the House and possibly the Senate and maybe a lot of governorships."

The White House, too, is growing sick of the whiners. NBC's John Harwood recently reported that Team Obama views the complainers as part of the "Internet Left fringe," and that one White House adviser said, "Those bloggers need to take off their pajamas, get dressed and realize that governing a closely divided country is complicated and difficult."

Although the White House later tried to walk back its own anonymous venting, the damage was done. "Old anonymous is, of course, full of s--t," writes prominent liberal blogger Jane Hamsher, noting that Obama's poll numbers suffered with Democrats after the president all but abandoned the public option in the national health care debate.

    Good morning all,
Ha,still in my pajamas i guess.Interesting how some in the administration view bloggers..Do they really want to know how I view them??Ineffectual, that about describes them...

He is the facilitator-in-chief. So busy listening to all sides and hoping to bring all sides together that he forgets to lead. He has never had to lead and that is a skill that needs to be developed just like any other skill.

On HRC and Gates, I think they are very much of the same temperament and that attracts them to each other. Also, they have been surrounded with all those hotshot czars so they are both making use of their institutional strengths to prevail.
And they both believe in rolling up their sleeves and getting things done.

All those tossed out statements from Imanuel(oops I mean anonymouse) means team Obama is feeling the burn from their base's anger.
They are frustrated because they have lost control of the debate and are increasingly irrelevant, when they should be front and center .
It looks to me like Pelosi is positioning the house to break this all wide open and take full advantage of a weak ineffectual Senate and Whitehouse.
In time like these the Speaker can often be the most powerful politician in Washington. She is the only person who can deliver with a strong majority solidly behind her.

"Small Group Now Leads Closed Negotiations on Health-Care Bill"

"But now, as a Senate vote on health-care legislation nears, those negotiations are occurring in a setting that is anything but revolutionary in Washington: Three senators are working on the bill behind closed doors.

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) sits at the head of a wooden table at his office as he and Sens. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and Max Baucus (D-Mont.) work to merge two competing versions of health-care legislation into one bill. The three men will be joined by top aides as well as by members of President Obama's health-care team, led by White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. The sessions started on Wednesday and could be completed this week."

Spent most of my working life under Republican administrations. For the most part, they just made my job of working full time while trying to raise two children without support a great deal harder than it needed to be.

I finally get the job part done and retire in my pajamas to take up blogging in the basement under a Democratic administration with hopes they will actually do something to help American families and Rahm runs off at the mouth?

I hope Nancy takes a good Health care bill with a public option (or even better single payer buy in to Medicare) and shoves it down their way too careful, go along to get along throats.

That speech in New Orleans more than sort of matched Duhya's lack of, well, everything in Obama's follow up to his fatuous "I wish I could write a check" response to a question. Perhaps New Orleans would get one or a hundred ones if it changed its name to Morleans Guaranty...?

And THEN he zooms off to a fundraiser in San Francisco?

He might as well have gone bike riding around some dessicated "ranch" in Texas.

As for me... temporarily kicked out of chemo again: one of those adorably lethal invasive yeast infections turned up in my blood. God bless my hematologist for insisting on occult bloodwork even when the superb infectious disease doc to whom she sent me felt all those symptoms (I am made of symptoms) were due to my very active lymphomania.

Here is the good news. Both agreed I needed to have my port IV removed ASAP. Surgery followed. And what followed that was an end to both fevers and those increasingly dangerous, copious day and night sweats have stopped entirely -- at least for now.

The relationship between certain yeasts and lymphoma is a complicated and elusive one. By midweek I'll see if there is still any yeast in my bloodstream; if not, one more surgery to install a new port (which I don't want but must have because this chemo regimen is too toxic to be injected directly into veins).

    What a choice:

Sign bills that help the American people meet their family obligations

    or

Sign bills that gouge the hell out of them to finance slaughter and keep the munitions manufacturers, insurance corporations, and banks living high off the hog.

A priority adjustment may be necessary.

Those folks in the White House had better stop sipping Chardonnay, and had better head to Cleveland and have boilermakers at one of the neighborhood bars; that 's where they'll learn about the electoral importance of universal healthcare.

And screw those people in the White House who think that we don't understand the pragmatic imperatives involved in elected politics. I've campaigned on my own behalf and have won and lost. Others here have also been elected. We understand right from wrong and the importance of keeping faith with those who provided us our mandates.

  52. jamie,

He delegated all of that to Emmanuel. If you noticed... no one in his own party is particularly tentative around him... and low level Republican representatives can call out to him "You lie!"

He really wants to believe that what he sold as a campaigner was bought universally.

A sad possibility seems to be that his political education remains stuck in the Illinois Statehouse where he loved the "present" option... as that is exactly where he placed himself from the start of this supposed "health care reform" development. Present... but not a presence and a force.

He really believes his actual job is all a matter of his pitch work. And Da Doo Doo Rahm will bully and charm the rest in his absence.

  53. Flatus

That's about where I am. What is the average age on Twitter and regular bloggers turning out to be? 40+?

The kids may like the fads to chat amongst themselves, but it is the adults who are taking to them to actually say something in hopes of being heard by someone who can actually move and shake.

They need jobs, education, and health care. Not major demands in exchange for a vote and paying taxes on time. The way too well paid ivory tower crowd will fail to listen to those people at their peril.

  54. Flatus,

The problem with ports is that they make spectacular hives for that yeast which gets all abuzz into every organ and kills ya.

Every month a port is required to be flushed. It also needs to have an occult blood test drawn to see if there is any yeast or dangerous bacteria present.

    Jamie,
    Just love these comments!!

"Those folks in the White House had better stop sipping Chardonnay, and had better head to Cleveland and have boilermakers at one of the neighborhood bars; that 's where they'll learn about the electoral importance of universal healthcare."

    Flatus,
Well said!! When I first read those things the so-called Administration sourse(R.Emanuel) said about us bloggers, I was pissed.I now know their just being cocky and stupid.Damn it, I wish Hillary had won..I know it wouldn't be a cake walk ,but I know Hill would be assertive and act on her convictions.does Obama have any?

Rez is really great, so glad they came especially in the midst of this storm. Gave him the short , just down the st., Obama tour, then they're coming back, we're gonna eat scallops then I think we're going to the pub.

"White House ‘Official’ Bad Mouths Labor Leader For Expecting Obama To Keep His Promises"

"Gerry McEntee is president of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). He leads one of the largest unions in America and has been one of the most vocal advocates for progressive health care reform. He is one of the few establishment figures willing to openly challenge Obama for repeatedly breaking his word in regards to health care reform.

Apparently, demanding that someone at least attempts to keep his promises is an unacceptable slight, according to a cowardly anonymous “senior White House 0fficial.”

"We have had just about enough of his gratuitous slaps,” said a senior White House official Friday, calling the politically charged language “outrageous and unacceptable” from an ally — even from one that had, the official noted, devoted substantial resources to health care efforts."

“He’s doing his members a real disservice,” said the official, who said that while all other labor leaders had been careful to keep their opposition to elements of health care proposals modulated and largely inside the tent, McEntee was “beyond the pale.”

  78. From the FDL article. What promises made are no longer in the health care bill that came out of finance. How hard will someone have to fight to get them back in:

A new national health exchange open to all Americans
A new public plan available to all Americans to compete with private insurance
An employer mandate to provide health insurance
A minimum medical loss ratio for insurance companies
To allow people to import cheaper drugs from Canada or Europe
To repeal the ban that prevents the government from directly negotiating with drug companies

Not so hypocritically, I hate (I don't think that is too strong a word) that lowlife steinbrenner, a republican felon, wiretapper of employees, and the probable contractor in the murder of harmless boozer & former steinbrenner employee, Billy Martin.

The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.
