  6. "First of all, I think Drupal is a perfect match for President Barack Obama's push for an open and transparent government -- Drupal provides a great mix of traditional web content management features and social features that enable open communication and participation. This combination is what we refer to as social publishing and is why so many people use Drupal. Furthermore, I think Drupal is a great fit in terms of President Barack Obama's desire to reduce cost and to act quickly. Drupal's flexibility and modularity enables organizations to build sites quickly at lower cost than most other systems. In other words, Drupal is a great match for the U.S. government.

Second, this is a clear sign that governments realize that Open Source does not pose additional risks compared to proprietary software, and furthermore, that by moving away from proprietary software, they are not being locked into a particular technology, and that they can benefit from the innovation that is the result of thousands of developers collaborating on Drupal."

  10. from an old caddybytes article:

"Of the 16 presidents beginning with the first golfing president -William Howard Taft, 'at the turn of the century, thirteen of those next sixteen presidents played golf with some degree of seriousness.' The three who did not play are Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, and Jimmy Carter. Those presidents who did play golf were Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., and now Jr. and Bill Clinton."

  11. W wasn't a golfer; he was a runner and a cycler. I think he golfed because daddy made him do it. (But what he really loved was hiding out in Crawford.) Obama golfs because he can't smoke in the WH.

Glad to see the media is focused on something important like how much golf he plays.

My asthma medicine was only $10 thanks to a manufacturer's coupon for $50. Yep, it would've been $60 to breathe this month WITH insurance (and that's not counting the cost of the co-pay for the trip to the doctor or the cost of the insurance to me and my employer). Without insurance, I don't know what a doctor's visit and Advair would cost, but I'll bet would've been at least double.

  12. Pat, open source is great, but...

I've used Linux as an operating system and have tried Open Office for general computing. And, I use Firefox and lots of freeware if it has a good reputation and passes security muster.

My experience in the government is that we fell into three or four categories.

The first major category would be be whether or not the system had to be secure for national security reasons. Use of open source software has all sorts of security implications that take lots of systems analyst hours to address.

The second category would be is the system a vertical application used only by specific organizations. In that case, open source might or might not work depending on specific requirements. We used a mix of cobol, fortran, simscript, and other things to make it all work. We had in-house coders working over our shoulders. Very, very costly.

The third category would be systems involving money, medicine, privacy, logistics, air traffic control, etc.. These systems are so critical that in-house coding is required to insure that everything fits together. When people try doing it on the cheap, they end up with tremendous messes like the VA has been plagued with over the years.

By far the biggest category in terms of numbers of users is the general applications category. Things like Windows. Here, the government buys nothing at anything approaching list price--it's all done by worldwide license with the government picking up responsibility for internal support of the applications. By having everyone using the same software, support requirements are minimized. And by having everyone using smartchips in accessing their systems, security is enhanced.

Now, I know I've over simplified and lots of my information is dated. So, that's where you need One to clean things up.

Oh the bottom line; although a particular open source product may appeal to, and be used by, a single agency, I think such usage should be on an exceptional basis because it tends to be quite costly after all the incremental costs are tallied.

Golf - the road to perdition, I tell ya. I've spent too many hours trying to make that damned ball fly straight instead of to the right, and now LP has become obsessed with the game. Whoever called it a good walk spoilt had it right. And if you (well, Dumya) couldn't hit a golf ball worth a crap, hacking at brush would be a pretty fair alternative. And I'll bet he even had a couple of undocumented Mexicans to clean his clubs, errrrr, tools.

  20. Golf is definitely boring - at least as a spectator sport - of course you'd never know it if you went and saw the huge crowds following the top players at a PGA event. As a sport, it's not a bad way to spend 4 hours FRUSTRATING THE HELL OUT OF YOURSELF. I don't care about Obama's game - he ain't no pro. And aside from occasionally watching guys do things that I wouldn't believe were possible with a golf club and ball, the only golf games I give a crap about are mine and LP's.

So ol' Harry decided to give it a run with an opt out public option? Will wonders never cease?

  30. Apparently Tim Pawlenty is a political moron.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/26/tim-pawlenty-goes-off-on_n_334277.html

"The governor explained his sudden harsh turn against the president by claiming Obama ran as a centrist and then betrayed voters. "President Obama has governed in an extremely liberal way, and he hasn't accomplished many major initiatives, but the few that he has have been almost exclusively partisan. That defies what he said during the campaign and doesn't live up to that promise."

Ummmm, I don't think that there is anything other than adopting Repug positions that Obama could do to become "post partisan", and unless Repugs plan to vote for him in 2012, I doun't think that would be in his his political interest, particlualrly considering where repug positions took the country during the Bush admin. And governed in a liberal way? Really? With TARP and the Recovery Act? Is that why the liberal wing of the party is so happy with Obama? And this is a governor who would aspire to be President? Idiot.

  32. Sea, LP got his seasonal flu shot last week, as he was coming down with a cold - 2 days after the shot he was running a fever as high as 103.3, with headaches and mild flu symptoms (none of the intestinal ones, thank god). It came and went in about 3 days. His fever broke with ibuprofen and a cool bath (you would have thought we were forcinghim into an Icee from the way he was complaining). Anything like that?

    Posted by: newpogo.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | October 27, 2009 9:48 AM

  33. To show how idiotic Milbanks post was.

Reid isn't compromising because he is in trouble at home. (which he is)He doesn't need liberal interest groups campaigning for him in Nevada. Think of the trouble they can stir up in a state like Nevada with its moderate to conservative voter base.
Reid is compromising because Reid is in trouble in the senate. He could very easily lose his leadership position if he screws this up. So his fellow senators have have a lot of pull where as team Obama , not so much.

Posted by: whskyjack Author Profile Page | October 27, 2009 9:56 AM

  34. Jack, you could be right on all counts above. I'm not sure why the Senate ever came up with the filibuster crap and single senator hold nonsense, but I would like to see Reid grow a pair and consider making the senate rules rational.

And yes, out of the mainstream is a pretty good description of the modern republican leadership if not of the party as a whole.

    Posted by: newpogo.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | October 27, 2009 9:56 AM

  35. Jack it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a Chuck Shumer or (god forbid) a Chris Dodd challenge Reid for majority leader in the next congress.

    10 for 10?

    http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docid=news-000003230572

I can't wait to see what BS is in this. The dems should counter with a response knocking off each one of the points, coming up with the counter position that they have been done before and came up with 0 for '00.

    Posted by: newpogo.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | October 27, 2009 10:06 AM

  36. Now, as the token Republican turncoat has rejected the Senate proposed version, it's time to head straight towards Single-Payer. Get it over with, already.

This morning's Journal had a healthcare section with stats closely matching what we've been presenting around here. It's actually a pretty good read. It looks like the numbers of Cat scans and MRIs are two of the things that really drive up our costs; many times more than the other surveyed countries.

Separately, the Journal now says they're out-selling the McDaily and all the other newspapers in the country. I can see why; except for the editorial pages, it's a very decent newpaper.

Patd, This article is from last December, and was comparing Obama's golfing 'skills' right before shortly before in went into office (but not related to the topic of how many times he's golfed since being in office)

PRESIDENTIAL GOLF | Obama ranks 8th among 15 who played -- JFK atop leader board
"In the January issue of Golf Digest, which hits newsstands next week, the president-elect is No. 8 on the list of golfing presidents. "Yep, Obama is a golfer, too," is the headline.

In fairness, not all of the 42 men who preceded Obama played golf. Golf Digest says Obama, when inaugurated, will be the 15th.

John F. Kennedy and his 80-stroke average tops the list. Calvin Coolidge, who left his golf clubs behind when he departed the White House in 1929, is ranked 15th.

Bill Clinton is just in front of Obama at No. 7 -- although Golf Digest flags Clinton's use of the score-improving "Billigans."

Physical properties: Generally round in form. Boils at nothing and may freeze any time. Melts whenever treated properly. Very bitter if not used well.

Chemical properties: Very active. Often unstable. Possesses strong affinity for gold, silver, platinum, and precious stones. Violent when left alone. Able to absorb great amounts of exotic food. Turns slightly green when placed next to a better specimen.

Usage: Highly ornamental. An extremely good catalyst for dispersion of wealth. Probably the most powerful income reducing agent known.

Caution: Highly explosive in inexperienced hands.
