Spending more than $20 million of his own money, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine is coming back, giving hope to Democrats for at least a mixed result in two key races next week, including the Virginia governor race where the Republican is poised for a rout.
Corzine is finally getting traction after trailing for weeks, aided by an avalanche of negative ads against GOP foe Chris Christie. Check out this Corzine ad, which not so subtly shows unflattering video of the hefty Christie tumbling out of an SUV, pointedly saying he "threw his weight around" to avoid penalties for traffic violations.
Implying your opponent is a fat law breaker? Now that's what we call winning ugly.

I'm getting so tired of all these individuals trying to get their faces and names in the news, bragging about what they're gonna do, I feel like saying , What the hell, let's call their bluff and insist on single-payer - push them on that, and then, keep introducing it every year.
I wasn't even calling for single-payer, but so many have been trying to make a name for themselves that I'm fed up. Use the electrodes!
Course, that might no be a winning strategy.

Good morning Mixers!
I am very cranky right now because I just found out that another friend of mine was arrested for trying to meet with Anthem Blue Cross administrators. One friend, who is the director of a group insured by Anthem, was arrested whilst trying to question a 14.5% premium increase. Yesterday another friend was arrested because she tried to deliver a petition on behalf of people who were denied coverage.
No media is covering these arrests!

ping :) You writin' for Corzine? (There might be a backlash by people of size in NJ. We are all people of size down here; they had fried butter & chicken fried bacon at the State Fair.)
Good for Prez Obama for doing what the Bush administration did not dare or care to do: associate death with the war. That's how they got support, but hiding the ugliness from the American people. Our fallen deserved better than that.
A photo op that (a) shows the seriousness with which Prez Obama is reviewing our position and possibly (b) trying to get Americans to be more vocal about bringing our troops home alive.
Land wars in Afghanistan have never worked. Perhaps it's time to try something else, something that world hasn't had access to before. Can we accomplish our goal of preventing a repeat of 9/11 through electronic intelligence and, if necessary, continued remote attacks by drones? This is not the time to stay the course.
As for Scary Sarah calling out Levi: If she thinks so little of him, isn't it a bit like the WH calling out Faux News? Isn't she actually raising his status? (In addition to the attention-loving pot calling the attention-loving kettle black.) Oh, and I believe the kid. She gave me cold chills during her first speech at the Rep convention; she's an evil, manipulative, narcissist. Levi's not smart enough to be manipulative unless he has handlers; he's just spilling the truth to make a buck. It's still the truth as any woman who listens to her spidey-senses knows.

Alicia, I don't know what the protocol is for these types of events that beg for media coverage. But, if it was me, I'd go through my rolodex looking for press contacts or people with such connections.
If the people were formally arrested by government employees, there'll undoubtedly be a public record of that event naming all the principals who were involved.
In any case, one should never go into the Lion's Den unaccompanied. And, there are still the non-violent tactics of 60s that can be called in to play.
What you've described absolutely begs for organized confrontation with cameras filming everything, etc.

Hi all -- My friend's name is Dottie Holtz and she lives in Virginia Beach. She was arrested yesterday at the Anthem Blue Cross offices for simply asking to share a petition of people who were denied coverage. She had no idea that she would be arrested.
I am trying to get the word out -- because this is the second person that I know of who was arrested for trying to just talk to an Anthem administrator in Virginia. The first was Joe Szakos, who heads the Virginia Organizing Project, whose employees are insured with Anthem. Joe was concerned that the recent 14.5% premium increase was going to finance lobbying efforts in opposition to health care reform. He went to the Anthem offices in Henrico County Virginia and was arrested while waiting to speak to a customer service representative. Joe didn't go there to get arrested -- he was also quite surprised they did this.
I'm contacting every media person I know how to get in touch with. This was my first stop after my Facebook page.
Thanks for helping!
~ Alicia

"Leaders of VOP said their premium with Anthem increased 14 percent this year and that the money is helping to pay for industry lobbying efforts to oppose health-care reform that would include a public insurance option, as President Barack Obama has proposed.
"We don't think that's right," VOP Chairwoman Jay Johnson said. "We need a public option, and we feel Anthem doesn't want that because they don't want to be accountable, and they don't want to be competitive." [richmond dispatch article jamie linked]
from same article, fat cat insurance blaming fat consumers for increases. pot-kettle phenomenon?

Thank you Jamie. This article in the RTD refers to the earlier arrest of another friend, Joe Szakos, who was arrested at the Anthem offices in Henrico County VA. Joe was arrested while waiting to speak to a customer service rep about the 14.5 % increase in premiums.
Dottie Holtz was arrested yesterday in Virginia Beach while attempting to deliver a petition about denial of coverage to Anthem. They called the cops on her after she refused to leave without speaking to an administrator.
So far, Dottie's arrest has not been covered by any newspaper.

Diva.... you go, girl.... much luck to you and your friends in getting the word out....
Anthem Blue Cross is cutting it's own throat with that kind of rise in premiums....
it's been our choice of insurance company for years.... Rick just got his packet about insurance picks for the 2010 year from HP and Anthem was no longer one of them.... we went with another that's coverage is just as good.... let's us keep our doctors... yet rise in premium costs was much lower....
when a company as large as HP will no longer carry you... that's a big loss in customers...

He's usually right on this stuff, but I'm passing the information on with a certain amount of trepidation and hope CBob may surface with further details regarding 10/29's historical significance.
I'd ask my co-worker about "Arpanet" but his answers always include more details than any of us in the office care to hear.

I love the way they claim that their profits have shrunk. They don't mention that the salaries and perqs are all part of overhead and that the fat cats are making money hand over fist. In Anthem's case this has included $40 million plus bonuses and stock options yearly.
You would think the stockholders would be pissed. They get $730 million split up amongst thousands of shareholders and he gets $40 million while abusing patients in their names.

I agree with Patsi: Politicians should be above these sort of things.
A cpl more thought came up when I read that Corzine spent 20ml of his own money...If I had that kind of pocket $ you would not see me around: I would be enjoying it..so what is behind him wanting more, and more money..He is a Democrat so I since there is no Independence...im forced to wish once again for the lesser of two evils..
The 2nd thought is that ; he at least has the balls to win ugly...wish the Gore had the same attitude when he gave up fighting for the POTUS..putz. ....Also wish that Obama, and the rest of the D's in D. C. would hang around people like him...maybe we would be getting this watered down public option that Pelosi is doing a victory lap about..
Im for not doing nothing, and just keep bring out the single payer ...ins for all.....If Im one of those 25 mil. that won't get it; if this passes, the pendulum will swing back to the R's a lot sooner than it did for the D's since Reagan won over the moderate D's ..they stayed R;s until the R;s really messed it all up....the D's are on course to fk it all up..and take us in the middle with them....

Back in 1954, Orville L. Freeman was running for guv here. The republican opponent accused him of having a crooked mouth. Freeman admitted that he did, and that it was the result of enemy action on Bougainville in World War II, for which he was decorated.
Freeman won the guvship handily, becoming the first Dem (we call 'em DFL up here) guv in 35 years. He was re-elected, then made Ag Sec'y by JFK and later retained by LBJ.

However, showing your opponent's picture, or a video of him in a public place can't be criticized.
The 'low' part of the Corzine ad relates to what most of us find undemocratic, unfair, and annoying, favoritism shown to certain people by the police and in the courts.
I am sure that if John Q. Public were found speeding in an unregistered, and therefore also uninured vehicle, he would get a ticket, and might even have to walk home. The really big Q is, did Christie use his pull to avoid consequences, or did the cops just let the guy off because he was wearing a suit and tie ?
I find it interesting that Corzine finds being governor to be worth more than $20,000,000. Expensive hobby, that.

I just had to turn the tv off: Obama is on bragging about the 3rd qtr economic positive news...thats was ok...but now he is talking about how important the small businesses are the most important biz in the country. He wants to give more Tarp $ to small banks so they can increase the cap of SBA loans.....thats nice...but why did he not start out doing this in the first place? He gave the Big Banks all of the $ that they wanted...all of the Ins Corps, what they wanted.! Now he is doing his sales pitch again...his trickle down is not working any better than Reagans did...Pogo...Lunche...

Ms Renee,
I don't think Corzine's campaign called Christie fat, their schtick is that Christie gets away with things that you and I wouldn't. This message is accompanied by a video of Christie that shows off his adiposity to the best advantage. However, there's no mention of the man's rotundity.

Renee -- I hate to admit it, but George W Bush had barely been on my radar before he ran for President. I had no idea what he was like, and in fact, had heard vague reports of his working well with some of the Texas Democrats. So when he started doing those push polls in South Carolina about McCain's supposed illegitimate black child and the rest of it, my jaw dropped. I think it was when I first thought about just what a bad human being he must be. (Obviously Corzine's throwing his weight around ad example is nothing in comparison...)
The other particularly horrible push poll I heard about was Brownback in Kansas, with his anti-Semitic ads against his opponent, Jill Docking. Now it appears that Brownback will be Kansas's next governor. All my Dem friends in my home state are jumping up and down and screaming.

Renee, hold onto that bridge; you might need one someday, if MN Guv Potholes Aplenty ever becomes the Prez.
Ya, "throwing his weight around" is very suggestive and mean. Still, it's not the same as calling him Piggy, Tubby, Fatso, Lardhog, The Blimp, or Double Wide. "Throwing his weight around" is a little more subtle.
Btw, what phrase would you use to describe anyone who bullies his way out of traffic tickets ? I don't think that 'uses his pull' or uses his connections quite convey the idea, but almost. And, you can't really say 'intimidating asshole' on tv, can you ?

My Dad's little sister died this week in Florida--age 102. His baby brother is the last one; he and his wife are 92 and living outside of Cleveland. High school sweethearts. Married just before going off to war.

I don't notice any complaints about the following subliminals that are really killing Christie :
1. 'Christie will take you in the wrong direction', 2. 'Christie, doesn't know where he's going',
3. 'Christie will get you lost',
4. 'Christie takes stuff that doesn't belong to him', 5. 'Christie is not careful with other people's property'
6. 'Christie is a scofflaw".
The moral of the story is that you can't accuse a fat guy of having Big Britches or throwing his weight around, even if he has Big Britches a throws his weight around.
Frankly, as a Great Honkin' Stuffed Butterball myself, I think the complaint has little merit.

Patsi,
Regarding your 1:59 post, I doubt that the huckster would care to be VP. He has no training or skills that willard could use. He knows that as the Veep, he'd have nothing to do and no future.
Besides, the huckster is far ahead in the polls. If I were in the huckster's position, I wouldn't ride shotgun for slick willie.
Also, palin or bachman would bring as much to the willard ticket as the huckster, and at a lower price.
The problem for republicans is not so much that Southern Baptists and Pentacostals don't like Mormons, as much as the fact that the Billionaire Mammonists don't trust Southern Baptist preachers.
My money is on a photogenic compromise candidate - lindsey graham with MN Guv Potholes Aplenty as his running mate. However, my heart is with willard getting the nomination and a third party "Real Christian" revolt nominating the the huckster/palin team.

"Obama Will Emphasize Security, Not Public Option, in Speech"
“Security and stability” — with or without a “public option.” That will be the essence of President Obama’s message in his health care speech to a joint session of Congress, a senior administration official said Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Obama will make the case that overhauling the nation’s health care system will create “security and stability” for those who already have insurance, in addition to covering those who do not, the official said."

"Secretary of Frankness"
"This bluntness from Clinton is something that is uncommon in the Obama administration, which is likely why she gets along so well with SecDef Gates. Others may prefer a more muddled message, camouflaged in vague non-specifics, instead of simply coming out and saying what you mean and what’s on your mind. That’s simply Clinton’s style, a manifestation of who she is as chief diplomat. Coddling our friends, especially those getting billions of dollars, just isn’t her style. She explains why:
“I am more than willing to hear every complaint about the United States,” Clinton said, “”but this is a two way street. If we are going to have a mature partnership where we work together” then “there are issues that not just the United States but others have with your government and with your military security establishment.”

"One can argue that the U.S. has already invested enough, and that the surge strategy was designed to buy Iraqis just enough time to settle their differences—if Iraq fails to seize that opportunity, my guess is that a large majority of Americans, Democrats and Republicans, will be content to call it a day."

Corazine can't win any other way but with money and ugly.
I mentioned some many days ago that Kerry's trip to Afghanistan was a failure in part. Still media played his trip as a win for the WH. Why was it a failure? The truth is that Obama did not want a run-off. He want a coalition government that would avoid a run-off. Why would Obama not want a run-off? Well, without more troops and Pakistan in smoke, the Taliban will wreck havoc on the run-off. They made this clear with their attacks. So the mess that may very well happen willl expose Obama as opposed to the controled elections in Iraq. Now even their elections coming up are in doubt. No matter how the media wants to spin it, the security situation in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pkaistan has gone down since Obama has taken office.
I love CNN calling out Jarret on MSNBC. She looked foolish. I said Obama would lose his battle against FOX. I see the stimulus "jobs saved" has been doctored, that Reid is in deep crap. AFPAK is a mess, Russia is saying nyet to new sanctions on Iran no matter how they change the enrichment proposal and Stewart had on a Palestinian who thinks Palestinians want only peace and human rights. One guy in the crowd shouted liar and Stewart was not about to have him ejected. I was shocked that Stewart offered no refutation of the Palestinian's spin. Right now Musims are trying to stir up protests at the Dome with false stories of ISraeli intent. It was quite unbelievable this guy said Jews who defend liberty and justice should join the Palestinians in their fight against Israel. I will say that Stewart did add after the guy said Israel occupies Palestine, that Muslims threw out the Jews from their countries. He didn't want to talk about that.
Wow.
I guess the only thing the Democrats can look forward to beside rallying behind the twerp who nailed Palin's daughter is that Republicans are in disorder. Given the majority Dems hold and the State of the GOP, the present Democratic record is rather lame.
DL, as A New Yorker I will certainly root for the Yanks, but please distinguish my predctions about the World Series to be a far different process than my predictions about everything else.

AMA's initial reaction:
"House releases reform bills; AMA reviewing both
The U.S. House of Representatives unveiled H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act (PDF), earlier today. The bill represents the melding of the three House versions of health system reform legislation and includes a public option in which physician participation is voluntary and payments are based on negotiated rates and the private insurance market.
The House also unveiled H.R. 3961, the Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act (PDF). This bill would repeal Medicare's sustainable growth rate, or SGR, formula and replace it with a payment system that provides for more predictable updates from Medicare.
The AMA's advocacy staff is in the process of reviewing these bills, which together run more than 2,000 pages. The House is expected to take up both bills next week. House strategy on combining the bills or moving them separately has not yet been finalized. "

http://www.politico.com/livepulse/1009/CBO_Public_option_premiums_higher_than_private_plans.html
"CBO: Public option premiums higher than private plans"
"The public insurance option would typically charge higher premiums than private plans available in the exchange, according to the Congressional Budget Office analysis of the House bill.
That surprising conclusion raises doubts about Democratic promises that a government-run insurance plan would provide a lower-cost alternative to consumers. At the same time, it calls into question Republican charges that the plan amounts to government takeover of health insurance -- because only 6 million people would enroll in the plan, according to the CBO."

"Obama's White House is for Sale Just like All the Others"
"It's not political rocket science stuff to know that the White House has always been for sale to the highest bidders. Obama, or any other Oval Office occupant, would not have a prayer of getting to the White House without the tens of millions that lobbyists, PACs, corporations, Wall Street, and labor unions stuff into their campaign coffers. Even as Obama revved up the crowd in New York and Iowa with his promise to chase the money changers out of the White House, he cut deals in the Senate to back more industry friendly tariff suspension bills than all other presidential candidates in 2008 accept one. His oft made claim that his campaign was bankrolled by the nickels and dimes of the little people was part truth, and in bigger part hyperbole. The list of Obama's banking and corporate donors read like a who's who of corporate and Wall Street America; the same as other winning presidents"

Today was strange in many ways..
I saw a clip of Nancy Pelosi doing the politicians' slap each other on the back routine and then saw in the details, the diminished results of the lackluster, uninspired actions of President Obama in the healthcare fight.
I then heard about the President meeting coffins of soldiers. I thought that was very admirable. Then, on the evening news I see film of Obama at the coffin ceremony. I got a sick feeling watching this. I hope the political arm of the White House had no part in this.
It was noted that the family of the soldier had approved of filming the ceremony. I'll have to give this all some more thought.

H. P. Was one of the most Obama backers that just repeated over and over that he was on the up, and up about his donors; and that it did come from small donations..and we fell for it. At the same time they were saying this..they were reporting the amount that it takes to run a presidential campaign..no one bothered to even question about the big corp donations there. Most of the bloggers were some of the meanest defenders of Obama, and could not be questioned about it...I haven't looked at Huffingtons Post since then...I used to like her until she turned all bs, and sell, sell , sell herself, and her blog.

Tony, I agree with you re just putting up single payer every year. It might work - scare some of the bigots making them think about it.
Anthony Wiener sure knows how to speak plainly.
Governor Balducci of Maine is making VERY cogent comments re not repealing the same-sex marriage act in Maine. He hadn't felt this way at one time- he changed his mind and grew. Bully for him.
KGC, are you not reading your email? We should be using one, at least, of these beautiful fall days to sit outside at that Mexican restaurant and quaff a few margaritas.
Also, KGC, Jill Ravitch is having her first big do to meet people and gather money for her run for DA. It's Wednesday somewhere on Cleveland Ave. Are you interested in going? I'll be there with my sister and some friends. I'm looking forward to this. Since it'll be a primary, we can't figure out when the real election will be - I guess next November. Ah - now I get it.

Bethy, when we lived in Florida, she lived across the Bay from us in Tampa so we would try to visit with her every month or so. Fortunately, her daughter lived in Lake Worth, so Aunt Ruth went to live with her a few years ago.
She was well attended by family both while she alive and while she was making her transition.
I'm sorry your family has had such difficult health problems. The way you speak of them, I know how you treasure your time with each of them.
We had a very nice older woman in our building in Florida. When it was time for her to move in with family, her granddaughter arrived to take her home with her. The granddaughter was a grandmother in her own right.

Flatus, It's nice to hear of families who take care of their elderly. I'm hating that we are one day going to have no one alive who lived thru the depression - they were strong people who knew how bad it can be here.
I thought I heard the announcer at Yankee Stadium at the first game introduce Yogi Berra, saying he was a veteran of D Day. Does any one know if that's true?
I saw an interview Tim McCarver did of Yogi and Joe
Garagiola and they talked about their childhoods in St Louis. It was way more than entertaining
I love old-timers - they are so real. I guess I could qualify as one...nah. I'm just old, not an original.
