Cheney Calls Obama "Afraid"

| | Comments (199)

Dick Cheney says Barack Obama is "dithering," but the President has already doubled the Bush Administration's troop levels in Afghanistan. In a fresh round of attacks last night, the former vice president said Obama "seems afraid" to again double the number of troops to the nation.cheney09.jpg

"President Obama now seems afraid to make a decision, and unable to provide his commander on the ground with the troops he needs to complete the mission." -- Dick Cheney (10/21/09)

If Cheney thinks nearly 100,000 troops are needed in Afghanistan, why did he leave office with roughly one-third of that number in the field? Perhaps he thinks the president he served was also "dithering" and "afraid."

The Bush White House ran a war in Afghanistan nearly its entire two terms in power. Obama, rightly or wrongly, has ramped up the fighting far more than George W. Bush ever did -- and Cheney calls this president afraid because he refuses to rush another 40,000 into combat?

Cheney bullying Obama to do what his former boss never would do seems to ring quite hollow.

  17. In 1888 an Egyptian farmer digging in the sand near the village of Istabl Antar uncovered a mass grave. The bodies weren't human. They were feline—ancient cats that had been mummified and buried in pits in staggering numbers. "Not one or two here and there," reported the English Illustrated Magazine, "but dozens, hundreds, hundreds of thousands, a layer of them, a stratum thicker than most coal seams, ten to twenty cats deep." Some of the linen-wrapped cats still looked presentable, and a few even had gilded faces. Village children peddled the best specimens to tourists for change; the rest were sold in bulk as fertilizer. One ship hauled about 180,000, weighing some 38,000 pounds, to Liverpool to be spread on the fields of England.

The history is instructive on how small steps lead to big change, and is worth study by all who clamor for progress on many fronts: from bringing about national health care to ending the US embargo of Cuba to immigration reform to overhauling an entire economic system, to each and every “issue” one might advocate.

  56. Craig, I wouldn't call Obama acting now on Afghanistan as "rushing". You really think with events on the ground, Obama is trying to avoid a "rush"? And as I mentioned last night, does Obama want to repeat the mistake Musharraf made by not sealing the border as one side or another goes after the Taliban. Pakistan pleaded with NATO yesterday to close the border? With an uncoordinated strategy between the US and Pakistan, I rather doubt Obama has the troops to close the border, do you?

As far as Cheney, your comments are right, but I rather doubt the Democrats who don't want more troops in Afghanistan would have let Bush put more in Afghanistan. And that is a story in itself. Democrats blasted Bush for lower troop numbers than Shinseki wanted, but they would NEVER have gone along with 300,000 troops in Iraq. And just look at their response to McCyrstal. They re-circulate the friendly death story and even consider more drones in Pakistan as the answer to their prayers. Read your posters here: They don't want anymore military agression no matter the consequence. Even talking about Africa or the Middle East invokes cries of obsession and warmongering.

Yes, Bush could have done many things differently, but with the UN planning new elections in two weeks, Obama's delay is problematic no matter the spin from the Penguin. Media touts Kerry as "convincing" Karsai to have a run-off, but again the truth was that Kerry wanted a coalition government as a run-off with the Taliban surging or under attack in Pakistan is very bad timing.

    http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/37th-in-health-performance/

Here is a fact check on the claim the US ranks 37th. If you go further than fact check and look at just quality and responsiveness, the US leads. This is why those millions including Union workers consider their insurance some of the best in the world. No matter how Democrats want to skew this reality, if costs go up and quality.responsiveness goes down, so will their political dingy. It will be bobing around in high seas just like the GOP dingy. Please note the game Pelosi is playing. One plan with Public option is now lower in cost (and will anybody talk about the solvency of Medicare?) while the plan that comes out without is will be much higher. This is just cooking the books to get what you want. How Bush.

Again if the majority want a public option, then why do most polls still show the majority are against Obama's plan altogether? Perhaps who pollsters ask and how they ask explain the strange polling numbers.

Yep, exaggeration on both sides will surely lead to a bigger mess. Had Obama demanded the transparency he promised, this would not have happened. I wonder how much this tactical inclination affects issues like Iran and Afghanistan. I'll leave those considerations for another post.

  58. "PR.com: Will President Obama be successful in reforming healthcare?

Howard Dean: Yes. He will sign a bill in late December with a real public option that works.

PR.com: And when should that go into effect?

Howard Dean: That’s another battle. I very much believe that he needs to use Medicare as the public option, at least for some of the people. He should [include people] who are under sixty-five. You can’t do it for everybody because you wouldn’t want a hundred million people in the Medicare system overnight, and there would be a financial problem, but you certainly can do it for some people. I believe that some people who are under fifty ought to be allowed to sign up for Medicare and pay premiums into the system. The reason I believe that is for political reasons. You need to show that this bill works before the 2010 elections. The only possibility of that is in using an existing bureaucracy. There is no chance of being able to start up a new bureaucracy for a public option, so the only thing you could do is expand the Medicare system to cover more people."

  61. also from the dr. dean interview linked above:

PR.com: It’s an interesting irony that obviously members of Congress are employees of the Unites States Government, so that’s who’s providing their health insurance for them.

Howard Dean: That’s true, and not only that, they actually have government run healthcare in the Capital. If you pay four hundred dollars a year you can go see the doctor pretty much anytime you want. And if you get sick you can go to Walter Reed Hospital (Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC); it’s a government run hospital. So Congress, in fact, has what the Republican Congressmen are complaining about. And I’ve long thought that we ought to have exactly what they have.

PR.com: Do they understand the hypocrisy?

Howard Dean: Oh, of course they understand the hypocrisy. That’s what people do in Congress. But the fact is that the American people get it. They understand that they ought to have what Congress has.

Of course many networks like ABC and CNN have said basically said the same thing Rove says in their investigating the public option poll numbers. Results swing wildly as more specific questions are clarified. And without the CBO and others vetting the likely results including deficits and cost increases for those with insurance, do you really think the numbers are solid?

I have heard Democrats balsting the results on Polls questioning whether we should pre-empt Iran. Its in how the question is asked, they cry as 60% of Americans favor pre-emption to prevent an Iranian nuke. When the consequences are discussed with a liberal slant, the numbers drop. I love how Democrats blast polls they don't like and use inverted logic to support those they like.

But the Republicans often do the same thing. In this, I am not taking sides, just pointing out the game behind polls as I did above about the 37th ranking of the US Healthcare system.

    Later....work calls.

But after they are off work and not having to work again what for the next 24 hours, they could be arrested for smoking pot. Stupid law.

"Local women wield more influence than many of us imagined-influence on their husbands, brothers, and especially their adolescent sons."

What is wrong with letting the people decide, letting the people take some responsibility for their choices, rather than Big Government mandating sobriety in every cockpit ?

I think Ms. Fairweather did a very good job of explaining their probable reasoning for the way they voted on Franken's amendment the other night. But the right has for years been characterizing people who are pro-choice as being "pro-abortion" and or "pro-baby killing".

I won't go over why those characterizations are dead wrong and so offensive. It's all been said over and over again before. But what those 30 Senators did was hand the left a chance to play that game too. And you know what "they" say.... payback is a bitch.... PRO-RAPE!

For hundreds of years in ancient Greece, bay leaf was a banned drug, because it drove women to dismember men at the seasonal bacchanal parties.

Greek men very selfishly objected to losing their members. And so, the men banned bay leaf, except in upon the brows of duly installed winners of Olympic games, which women were forbidden to attend.

Incidentally, marijuana was worn a by both genders indiscriminately in the form of sturdy garments, and with the full approval of law enforcement officials.

Marijuana was the cash crop grown by Abe Lincoln's family, and even young Abe himself. This fact is no longer important, since Mr. Lincoln ceased to be sufficiently politically correct to maintain his membership in the rapepublican party.

  98. Ms Renee,

The logic of the the US chamber of commerce pro-rape message was perfectly straightforward. In short, they said that private contracts trump US criminal law. There was nothing convoluted about it at all, it was blatantly pro-crime, pro-criminal, anti-victim, anti-woman, and more stupid than the average turnip.

Of course, if the chamber were correct, each murder would be legal as long as it was a contract job. From the nation's beginning no court, not even the brain dead roger b. taney court, has ever fallen for that argument.

In fact, every contract to hide a crime is itself criminal. If the contract is necessary for employment, it is classed as racketeering and extortion. If the hush clause comes into play as the result of a rape, the company and its officers become accessories to rape, are as culpable as the rapist and ought to share the same punishment.

Beware of all the bullshoulders around here.

Mr. Bloggingham has several good points. He never impedes the flow of history, and never steals from blind orphans.

However, I don't recommend getting into a butt kicking with him. Those lumberjack boots are quite unsanitary; he kicks high and inside; he is an excellent speller, to boot.

Some call him Laird, some lord. I call him Mr. and get away with it, because I can spit snuff into a skunk's eye at 37 paces, and am therefore feared on 3 continents. Antarctica, Atlantis, and Mu.

As much as you're trying to avoid the topic, I have to point out that at 113 million the Phils are hardly some good old boys playing for their supper. I don't like that the Yankees have a big market, big payroll advantage, but BOTH the owners and players don't appear to want any restrictions. So that's what we get.

Being an AL fan, after they finish off the Angels, I'll say the Yanks in 6.

  156. My brother in law plays a lot of board games and he also had several whiny children. So he instituted this rule early on. Anyone was free to play any game but they got no help because of their age. So if it took reading to play they had to do their best to read, the same with math. It worked well.
I have been on several usenet groups that informally operated under those rules. I like them as I like a young perspective. On the net you can't tell anyone's age or sex or even how much I have drank today. It is all just bits and bytes and all we do is guess from what is posted.
I may or may not be Jack, I may or may not drink whisky, I may or may not have a wife that will kick my butt if I don't have the house cleaned up before she gets back tonight.

So if anyone any age wants to engage in semi adult behavior and talk politics then I'm all for it.
Just remember I may not agree with your opinions or facts and some days I'm damn blunt about it.
On those days just borrow KGC's baseball bat and slap me up side the head with it.

With that maybe I had better appease my wife and get busy cleaning house.

  159. Evening,

    Quick check in.

Cheney - the dark lord who helped start this mess, and let Afghanistan fester for 6 years after picking the sore open? Yes, we should certainly respect his view of what Obama should be doing.

Solar, you're right. (Oh, and that was a delicious lunch you bought - but I had to skip the rice and dessert - damn diet).

Max, you wrote"And there is New Pogo calling Republicans rape-promoting racist crazies." I just said that Reupblicans are racist. Other folks were talking about rape promoting. And I see that you again provided not onwe link to support your assertion that the Intel community members said they were restraining Bush with the NIEs of 2003 and 2007. And no, Bush did not like the reports - but that was not what you said. If you want to morph your arguments, you might try being a little more subtle than that.

Oh, and on health care, the article you linked ended thusly: "Among the other stats on how the U.S. health care system and health stacks up internationally: A 2007 Commonwealth Fund report ranked the U.S. last out of six industrialized countries in health system performance, which included measures on quality, access, efficiency, equity of care and healthy lives. "Access" and "equity" measures are affected by the lack of universal health care. On life expectancy, the U.S. ranks 50th and below France, Canada, the U.K. and the European Union average, according to the CIA World Factbook. Infant mortality is also higher in the U.S. than all of those countries and more. A 2006 report on infant mortality by the nonprofit Save the Children showed the U.S. tied for next to last among industrialized countries." And this was the WSJ's writer. The ONLY thing the article debunked was the rank of 37th in the WHO assessment, by attacking the methodology. Pitiful.

Gotta go to the last football game of the season for LP (mercifully).

  160. Bear,

I started hating Rush Limbaugh about 20 years ago and I've never seen the "incident" in any of the list of bad things Rush has said articles, but I know I wasn't delusional then or now.

There was a story about hazing of a young black person where a group of white boys had jumped him and painted him with white paint. In one of those asides didn't click off the mike quite in time, I heard Rush say to his engineer: "Painted White? He should have been so lucky!"

Maybe he thought it was a funny throw away line, but even giving him the benefit of a doubt, it still reveals the core of the man being rooted in anger, violence, and prejudice. Nothing he has said or done since has changed my opinion of this pathetic creature. The most sympathetic emotion I can manage for him is wondering what sort of childhood he could have had to be so warped and disgusting.

  163. Hey Corey, I'm just a kid from Dayton, Ohio with two bad knees and a dream to play Major-League Baseball. Shouldn't you be a Tigers fan, anway?

Rez, the reason pay-roll is that high is because they are paying to keep the talent they developed. Happ, Hamels, Howard, Rollins, Utley... all came up in the system. I'm just enjoying the magic it while it lasts, and I've got bad news for A-Rod and Kate... neither one of them are getting a ring this year! Phils!

...and a final note: an 11 year old should not be interacting with adults on the internet. It's a terrible lapse in judgment to allow it, and to subject a young mind to possible manipulation by strangers and introduce them to complex-topics of a sensitive nature before they are emotionally capable of dealing with them is incredibly irresponsible. You want cute, get a puppy.

  164. It's funny to see some Yankee talk today since a lot of their fans have short memories. When it was reported that Manny and Ortiz were on the Mitchell report list, Yankee fans were quick to say the Red Sox wins were tainted, despite the fact that they test year, 2003, was before either Sox Win. They also forget that at least 10 Yankees players were reported to have used during their run in the late 1990's.

I think one of the things that really sank Rudy "The Plunger" Giulliani's poorly run campaign for President is when he came out in the fall of 2007 saying he hoped the Red Sox would win the World Series. No self respecting Yankees fan would ever hope Boston would win. The only time I as a Sox fan wanted to see the Yankees win was in 2001 and God rewarded the Yankees with a choke loss. I still laugh at the number of people who lost total respect for the Plunger after that bit of voter pandering...

I am in full agreement about board games and children. Mine have been playing chess since they could understand how the pieces moved. My son figured out that a strategic three letter word in scrabble could rack up a higher score than some six letter thing he didn't understand. :-)

I firmly believe that part of the problem with today's schools is not expecting children to meet goals, but that is a whole other issue.

  172. Bear,

You may be right about Rudy, but I'm a pretty avid Yankee fan, who has rooted for your Bosox as the AL representative, once my team's season is over. An exception to that has been when the Mets played in the Series, and I expect that this year I would have been rooting for Joe Torre and the Dodgers, if they made it and played anyone other than the Yanks.

Bottom line: I root for the AL rep unless there's some NY or a compelling Yankee tie to the NL team.

Pine tar! You guys won that game.

George Brett could play on my team anytime. Great talent, and more important a great competitor. He and Graig Nettles had a few dust-ups in the area around third base, but I saw them on a panel discussion a few years ago, and each respected the other guy's game.

And as a hitter, it's an insult to Brett to mention Nettles in the same sentence, paragraph, or month.

  186. Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door
    With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war?
'Cos when we stop and look around us,
There is nothing that we need,
    In a world of persecution
That is burning in its greed.

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door
Because the truth is hard to swallow
That's what the war of love is for

It's not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It's more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be

And when you stop and think about it
    You won't believe it's true
That all the love you've been giving
Has all been meant for you.

I'm looking for someone to change my life,
I'm looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it's done to me,
To lose the love I knew
    Could safely lead me through.

Between the silence of the mountains,
And the crashing of the sea,
There lies a land I once lived in,
And she's waiting there for me,
But in the grey of the morning,
    My mind becomes confused,
Between the dead and the sleeping,
And the road that I must choose.

I'm looking for someone to change my life,
I'm looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it's done to me,
To lose the love I knew,
    Could safely lead me to
The land that I once knew,
To learn as we grow old
    The secrets of our soul.

It's not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It's more the way you really mean it
When you tell me what will be

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door
    With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war?
'Cos when we stop and look around us,
