The New Jersey and Virginia governor races are not polling well for Democrats. Traditionally, the media hypes these off-year elections as leading indicators of the next cycle, the mid-term congressional races -- and, inevitably, the president gets the blame or credit for how his party does. If Republicans win next week, they'll get a media boost just in time for the holidays.

Well, McDonnell is certainly spending the money in Virginia. Funny how seeing the campaign ads on TV while I there last week has made me care a little more. I guess we will see if Prez Obama still has the good will of the people when he lends his hand to the campaign.

...and I while I'm not surprised that McDonnell has a lot of money to spend (GOoPer, no surprise there), but I am surprised by all of the money just floating around out there to buy offices. That sector of the economy seems to be just fine.

Solar, You forgot one. But that's OK, because I just happen to have it handy right here:
Element Name: MAN
Symbol: BY
Atomic Weight: (180 +/- 50)
Physical Properties: Solid at room temperature, but gets bent out of shape easily. Fairly dense and sometimes flaky. Difficult to find a pure sample. Due to rust, ageing samples are unable to conduct electricity as easily as young samples.
Chemical Properties: Attempts to bond with WO any chance it can get. Also tends to form strong bonds with it. Becomes explosive when mixed with Kid (Element: Child) for prolonged period of time. Neutralize by saturating with alcohol.
Usage: None known. Possibly good methane source. Good samples are able to produce large quantities on command.
Caution: In the absence of WO, this element rapidly decomposes and begins to smell.

bellwether or belling the lead sheep reminds me of:
"Belling the cat" or "to bell the cat" is an English colloquialism that means to suggest or attempt to perform a difficult or impossible task.[1] The phrase comes from the Aesop's Fable The Mice in Council, in which a group of mice declare that the only way to avoid the dangerous cat is to tie a bell around its neck in order to give warning whenever it is near. One mouse then asks who will perform the dangerous task. The moral of the story, as commonly given, is that it is easy to suggest difficult (or impossible) solutions if the individual giving the solution is not the one who has to implement it.

You turned that joke around on me...I knew that you were the real witchie women..you gals take turns: You are the leader this year..you have the power...This is what I was going to post:
Patsi, You might like this one:
Element Name: WOMAN
Symbol: WO
Atomic Weight: (don't even go there!)
Physical properties: Generally round in form. Boils at nothing and may freeze any time. Melts whenever treated properly. Very bitter if not used well.
Chemical properties: Very active. Often unstable. Possesses strong affinity for gold, silver, platinum, and precious stones. Violent when left alone. Able to absorb great amounts of exotic food. Turns slightly green when placed next to a better specimen.
Usage: Highly ornamental. An extremely good catalyst for dispersion of wealth. Probably the most powerful income reducing agent known.
Caution: Highly explosive in inexperienced hands.

Dooty
The governor of a state often has their hands on the levers of power within that state as well as being the link between the Federal government and the state. This power shows up in a lot of ways such as appointive offices which become important in national elections because boards, judges, and other officials may owe their well being to the governor and his or her machine not to mention gerrymandering following a census which lays down legislative districts.
Then there is distribution of Federal funds and the political bias that can cause. Those are just a few of the ways a governor can help or hurt a President in power.
Jeb Bush and the 2000 election is an extrme case but gives you an idea.
Posted by: Jamie
| October 27, 2009 3:08 PM
Can't say that I see the bellweather trends in the governorships in those states very clearly both had reps from '94-'02 and dems from '02 til now, and they both look like reps might come on board this year. It took Dems 4 years after the last shifts in power in those states to take control of congress. I don't know - I could just be dense (like my dad always said).

I don't think the it's 'my turn/your turn' thing has much to it.
But, I do think the administration's incredibly ham handed governance is dispositive. And, I'm not talking about the economy; considering the amount of dollars tossed at it, Keynes would say recovery is inevitable. I'm talking about the healthcare debacle.
If the administration doesn't go straight for single-payer while it has this second chance, it will cause a stunning loss of confidence that will keep Dem voters home by the millions.

In the case of Oklahoma, I think it was the other guy used up his two terms and there was some scandals also. Nothing ever proven.
The governor of Texas, if I am not mistaken, is considered a "weak" form of governorship. Even when Gov Ann Richards (D) was in charge, Texas was a red state, if I recall correctly.
Thanks to Jamie and Patd.

If Reid doesn't slap Lieberman down hard for this, then he might as well resign and go home. Save himself the trouble of losing 2 elections.
The only reason to kiss Lieberman's behind is times like this. If he can't be counted on at these times then give him the boot. See how he likes caucusing alone.

Lieberman won't really need any committee assignments after the Health Coverage vote, will he ?
The fellow has a lot to think about, and if he doesn't do it Harry's way, he'll have a lot of time to think about it.
I am reminded of the time dirty dave durenburger was stripped of all Senate assignments. He was happy just to see anyone who was willing to talk to him. 2 years is a long time to be an impotent, lonely, pariah. 4 years is is even longer. On the bright side, he could catch up on his soaps.

It's Schumer's fault that Liebermen is still a Senator. If Liebermen helps filibuster the PO bill then Schumer should be blamed as well
Also if he isn't stripped of all committee's and chairmenships then Reid should be pummeled with email and phone calls telling him to resign since he is no Democrat except in name only.
Its well past time to send Liebermen packing to the basement closet office he so richly deserves and spend his time with all his rat buddies who live there.

I got reminded about the best part of Texas politics today. Apparently the "super conservative" candidate for the seat in New York took Dick Armey with him to the newspaper interview where board not only thought the candidate was a total loser but was particularly offended by Mr. Armey. Which brings us to one of the best gifts ever given by the State of Texas: Ms. Molly Ivins who said of Armey:
