1774 Birth of pioneer environmentalist Jonathan Chapman (Johnny Appleseed). Distributing apple seeds and religious tracts from the Alleghenies to the Ohio Valley, Chapman's theology was strongly reminiscent of Swedenborgianism, which taught an empathy with the natural world.

Join the twitter debate over which cartoon character I am most like (i say Foghorn Leghorn, my ole newspaper pals shortened it to "Foggy"):
@ljfxiki I usually hear Mr. Magoo... ;)
@Fasttransam83 You sound like Jimmy James on that old show "News Radio"
@DavidHoustonVO I say Hank Hill. Voiced by the same guy, no less!

My experience at the US Chamber was that they really didn't care about their members other than whether or not the dues came in to pay the people in the building very, very well. Their lobbying was often at cross purposes with one group of members (usually the small ones) being shafted for another group that brought in more cash.
Other than the money, it was the power and relationships and having a great big space where the President could speak by just walking across the street

I've belonged to 4 Chambers. In each one a couple of people really had the say and oddly enough it wasn't the richest business. Just a politician that had been there for a while and had become the most influential.
BTW, Turkey has had a woman prime minister. I think when you say the middle east most of you are thinking of the Arab states.

...and I have a bone to pick with you, Mr. Crawford:
When I suggested a "Featured Comments" element, I meant just that: "Featured", as in bringing special attention to comments that illustrate varying perspectives participating in whatever the discussion might be in the public discourse at that moment, and selected by YOU, rather than participants here. I also thought it would be more effective in the margins, rather than on a separate page. To use superlatives (as in "BEST comments") in differentiating some over others isn't really fair, as there are a plethora of good comments every day. Of course, it is your house, just wanted to express that sentiment. Thanks.

....of course, you run the risk of editorial bias and discouraging participation by some who may be offended by your selections, but that is their problem, not yours. As I've said before, the myth of objective journalism is dead. Everybody has an opinion, to pretend that's not the case is very-slightly insulting. You take sides often enough, which is a good thing, in moderation.

Watching a fascinating flick on Sundance--Return of the War Room.
It caused me to think of the healthcare fiasco in terms like when during the campaign, Mr Obama was saying 'change, change, change'. But that's morphed into 'stay the course, stay the course, stay the course', which is exactly what the insurance industry and the special interests want.

So I get that you can disagree with Obama's policy. You could see him as a yellow-bellied, green liberal that is in over his head, and who will be toyed with by Iran until they get the bomb. Fine. We can debate that.
But when you see Obama holding his own on the world stage - we cannot remind ourselves enough - that on Nov. 4th - there was only one Country in this world where this story was possible.
And the good news is that in the future - other nations will follow in our lead....
The entire world took notice not just of that day - but the entire historical (and never-ending) election. The one and half years of passionate and spirited democracy - has had a noticeable impact on the politics in the Middle East.
We have inspired them to think like Americans about their leaders:
"They're all corrupt - and we should throw the bums out!"

Jamie became gravid by attending a concert on Dec 31, 1963 ?
I always thought that there was a little more to it than that.
On New Years Eve 1963, I accidently walked in on a drunken pal as he was committing a felony on his drunken girlfriend's body. In those days, it was a really rare sight. That's probably why we call them the good old days.

Pat, the reunions have dominated the Korean news for the past several days. The North Koreans play the most cynical kind of gamesmanship by turning the visits faucet on and off.
The week following this week is the Korean holiday of Chuseok.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuseok
It's the most emotional and important Korean holiday. Having families separated because of the NK idiocy is a tragedy in itself made worse by emotions generated during Chuseok.

At the time there was supposition that the girl was pretending to be over 18. That her mother had pushed the relationship. That the judge had agreed to a "time served" deal for the one guilty plea and then renegged on the agreement. Finally that there was a civil settlement many, many years ago and the the woman involved is part of the group lobbying for the charges that caused him to flee to France to be dropped. The attached article above is pretty comprehensive for a very short piece.

The brothers were both born on Governors Island in New York Harbor, where their father, Thomas B. Smothers, a West Point graduate and U.S. Army officer, was stationed. Major Smothers served in the 45th Infantry Regiment (United States) and died during the Second World War while being transported from a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Fukuoka, Japan, to a POW camp in Mukden, Manchuria. They were raised by their mother in the Los Angeles area.
They graduated from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California, and attended San Jose State University. After a brief time in a folk group called the Casual Quintet, the Smothers made their debut as a duo in 1958. They were a popular act in clubs and released several successful record albums, the most successful being Live at the Purple Onion, 1961.
The brothers appeared in a segment of the television sitcom Burke's Law, in which they played two compulsive hoarders. Their first television series was a situation comedy, The Smothers Brothers Show (1965–1966). Tom played an angel come back to earth to oversee his brother Dick, who played a swinging bachelor. It did not do well in the ratings and had little of the music that was identified with the brothers. Tom would later say "Four Star (the production company) gave me ulcers."

It was The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour[1] for which the Smothers Brothers became best known. Premiering in February 1967, it started out as only a slightly "hip" version of the typical comedy-variety show of its era, but rapidly evolved into a show that extended the boundaries of what was considered permissible in television satire. While the Smothers themselves were at the forefront of these efforts, a large portion of the credit also goes to the roster of writers and regular performers they brought to the show, some of whom would go on to become some of the biggest names in comedy, including Steve Martin, Don Novello ("Father Guido Sarducci"), Rob Reiner ("Mike Stivic"), Presidential candidate Pat Paulsen, Bob Einstein ("Super Dave Osborne" and "Officer Judy"), Einstein's brother, Albert (who works professionally as Albert Brooks), and resident hippie Leigh French ("Share a Little Tea with Goldie"). The show also introduced audiences to pop singer Jennifer Warnes (originally billed as Jennifer Warren or simply Jennifer), who was a regular on the series. The television premiere of Mason Williams' hit record, Classical Gas, took place on the show; Williams was also the head writer for the series.

In '68 I had occasion to see the brothers at the Tokyo Hilton where they were performing at the USO gold plate dinner honoring GIs serving in Vietnam and Korea.
I didn't have the foggiest who they were because I hadn't spent more than 15-minutes in the States after they started their program.
But now, from the bio that you provided, I know why they were there. More power to them.

Griswold's "Memoir"
The day Edgar Allan Poe was buried, a long obituary appeared in the New York Tribune signed "Ludwig". It was soon published throughout the country. The piece began, "Edgar Allan Poe is dead. He died in Baltimore the day before yesterday. This announcement will startle many, but few will be grieved by it." "Ludwig" was soon identified as Rufus Wilmot Griswold, an editor, critic and anthologist who had borne a grudge against Poe since 1842. Griswold somehow became Poe's literary executor and attempted to destroy his enemy's reputation after his death.
Rufus Griswold wrote a biographical article of Poe called "Memoir of the Author", which he included in an 1850 volume of the collected works. Griswold depicted Poe as a depraved, drunk, drug-addled madman and included Poe's letters as evidence. Many of his claims were either outright lies or distorted half-truths. For example, it is now known that Poe was not a drug addict. Griswold's book was denounced by those who knew Poe well, but it became a popularly accepted one. This occurred in part because it was the only full biography available and was widely reprinted and in part because readers thrilled at the thought of reading works by an "evil" man. Letters that Griswold presented as proof of this depiction of Poe were later revealed as forgeries.

nyt on the dawg's mtp gig:
Mr. Clinton was also asked if he worried that 2010 might see a repeat of the mid-term elections in 1994 that ended with Republicans taking control of the House and Senate.
“There’s no way they can make it that bad,” Mr. Clinton said. First, he said, the country is more diverse and more interested in positive action. Second, he said, when the Republicans finally won control of the whole government, “they know the results were bad” after eight years under President Bush. And third, he said the Democrats haven’t taken on the gun lobby like he did.
“Whatever happens, it’ll be manageable for the president,” Mr. Clinton said.
