Jody Powell's Rabbit Days

| | Comments (142)

Weirdly, the stunning news of Jody Powell's death on Monday immediately brought to mind an odd and revealing episode from the days I worked as an intern in his White House press office. It shows his legendary coolness as a wry observer of Washington's bizarre ways.

It all started when Jimmy Carter tangled with a crazed rabbit on a fishing trip near his Georgia home and it became a headline grabber for days, prompting Powell, his press secretary at the time, to try and set the record straight in a book about his White House years, "The Other Side of the Story."

Powell wrote this hilarious account of how the story so simply began, and then mushroomed into a national joke that actually hurt Carter's image -- long before the internet provided presidential detractors a forum for such silliness:

Jody_Powell_and_Jimmy_Carter.jpg"It began late one afternoon in the spring of 1979. The President was sitting with a few of us on the Truman Balcony. He had recently returned from a visit to Plains, and we were talking about homefolks and how the quail were nesting and similar matters of international import. Suddenly, for no apparent reason -- he was drinking lemonade, as I recall -- the President volunteered the information that while fishing in a pond on his farm he had sighted a large animal swimming toward him. Upon closer inspection, the animal turned out to be a rabbit. Not one of your cutesy, Easter Bunny-type rabbits, but one of those big splay-footed things that we called swamp rabbits when I was growing up. The animal was clearly in distress, or perhaps berserk. The President confessed to having had limited experience with enraged rabbits. He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat."

Apparently, the president shooed the offending rabbit away with his paddle. The story would have died of natural cases, had Powell not made the mistake of passing it along to a reporter, Brooks Jackson of CNN. Still, the reporter wrote the story in a lighthearted fashion. Powell wrongly thought it would be received as a "mildly amusing incident" and laughed it off.

"We were soon corrected. The Washington Post, exercising the news judgment that we in the White House had come to appreciate so keenly, headed the piece 'Presidentcarter_rabbit.jpg Attacked by Rabbit' and ran it on the front page. The more cautious New York Times boxed it on page A-12. That night, all three networks found time to report the amazing incident. But that was just the beginning. It was a nightmare. The story ran for more than a week. The President was repeatedly asked to explain his behavior at town hall meetings, press conferences, and meetings with editors. There was talk of a suit under the Freedom of Information Act to force release of the picture showing the President, paddle and rabbit in close proximity. Shortly after the Reagan administration took office, they stumbled upon a copy of the picture -- apparently while searching for a foreign policy -- and reopened the old wounds by releasing it to the press."

RIP to Mr. Powell. I was touched to read that Mr. Jimmy went to tell Mr. Powell's mother of his passing--more proof (as if we needed any) that he truly is a great southern gentleman. As, it seems, was Powell.

  8. We've got to do something about this "death" thing. How about a war on dying? This is of course humanity's greatest scandal of which we spend the greater part of our lives in denial.

What would seriously pushing the envelope back cost? 10 trillion? $2000 per every living human would just about cover that. Given a lifespan of a thousand years, we would undoubtedly look to the stars and be less inclined to desperation...

  14. And yet the supreme drive of life is to survive Sturg. If one believes the future is "open", human evolution does not necessarily depend on death as a selective mechanism for the evolution of adaptation through differential reproduction. Olaf Stapelton was a hard read......

I'm not talking immortality. I'm talking extending individual life.

Ah, to be outlived by an olive tree or a turtle. Nope. Mother Nature has a liberal view of lifespan and it could be modified to allow for the full expression of individual human potential. We would be in a far better position as a society to keep a big rock from killing Mother Nature.

There would either be caps on reproduction or a green way to get off this planet.

  25. SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A team of scientists studying rock samples in Africa has shown a strong link between falling carbon dioxide levels and the formation of Antarctic ice sheets 34 million years ago.

Levels of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, mysteriously fell during this time in an event called the Eocene-Oligocene climate transition.

"This was the biggest climate switch since the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago," said co-author Bridget Wade from Texas A&M University.

  27. Here's how Senator Enzi feels about abused woman.

It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition.

Under the cold logic of the insurance industry, it makes perfect sense: If you are in a marriage with someone who has beaten you in the past, you're more likely to get beaten again than the average person and are therefore more expensive to insure.

In human terms, it's a second punishment for a victim of domestic violence.

All ten no votes were Republicans, including Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming), a member of the "Gang of Six" on the Finance Committee who are hashing out a bipartisan bill. A spokesman for Enzi didn't immediately return a call from Huffington Post.

At the time, Enzi defended his vote by saying that such regulations could increase the price of insurance and make it out of reach for more people. "If you have no insurance, it doesn't matter what services are mandated by the state," he said, according to a CQ Today item from March 15th, 2006.

Here's the link for above story.

Pew Research Center finds just 29 percent of U.S. adults think news organizations generally get the facts right. That's down from 55 percent in a similar survey in 1985.

  64. President Bush mocked other prominent politicians behind their backs while in office, according to a new book by former speechwriter Matt Latimer.

Last month, the Washington Post reported that ex-Bushies were feeling a "growing nervousness" over what might be in their old colleague's tome. The October issue of GQ includes some eye-opening excerpts from the book.

Yeahyeahyeah, awesome. Now we don’t have to talk about real issues again for at least three or four days. I can probably take the rest of the week off.

But that is not the part of this kerhaha/broufuffle I want to indulge. No, rather, more interesting to me than what Obama said is how we know that he said it:

  101. Hey newpogo.

I guess I shouldn't file this under "real issues". I know that healthcare which the bipartisan group seems to be reaching common ground on is the most critical issue effecting the future, but maybe this very unimportant problem might be worthy of some consideration:

Despite our general obsession with partisan bickering, the American quest for the Grand Bargain with Iran continues. The next 60 days are very important.

    1. New bipartisan report on Iran discusses the dangers of inaction or anticipated Israeli pre-emption:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aGXuRWqsEFos

    3. Israeli clock as seen from the Israeli Left:

    4. What the O-team is saying now in Congressional hallways….

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27020.html

And for the record: The Iranian regime is preparing final logistical positioning for nuclear weapons. Delivery systems, intelligence and special ops, conventional, chemical and possibly biological weapons manufactured for minimal signature have been supplies to internationally recognized terrorist groups. This would include Hizb'Allah as well as some support to the Taliban. Illegal activities such as arms shipments continue.

The Iranian Minister of Defense is wanted by Interpol for bombing a temple in Argentina and killing several dozen Jews. Where is the clerical ruling on that one? The Spiritual advisor to the appointed Iranian President Ahmadinejad advocates that rape is permissible in extracting confessions and that the regime is the mouth of God.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2009/09/iran-maverick-mehdi-karroubi-refuses-to-back-down-from-rape-allegations.html

The Iranian regime is indeed an existential threat to Israel and a danger to the US. It has done almost all it can to delay and destroy any dialogue wit the West. The material above confirms much of this as Western media turns from interest about the struggle of the Iranian people against tyranny to framing Iran as a question of more unwanted US intervention. Lost is the effect retreat on this front will have on the deteriorating struggle in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Certainly, lost is any existential threat to our trajectory in history.

The Iranian regime signifies an abomination to Liberal Democracy. So called “moderate” blog sites like TMV might want to call tea partiers the “American Taliban” (and then pull the header), but the situation the West is facing several years out at the hands of our present adversaries is quite alarming. At times, Obama appears to understand this and I am certain Hillary does.

There is a fine line between hyper vigilance and obsession on this issue of Iran, but given the eventual ubiquity of unidentifiable terror and destruction embedded in the new Multi Polar world, prudence is the name of the game. Just days after the eighth anniversary of 9/11, it would be a grave lesson to forget. The existential threat to our peace and prosperity is both real and present if not clear to all.

The healthcare debate should not remove this issue from the front page.

Given the new effort to correct Obama's claim Wilson responded to with "incivlity" (and obviously racism) during the speech and now seeks to restore status verification, the issue of truth has been blurred. Obama knew at the time he spoke that having no verification would mean his claim was false. How can someone so smart have unintentionally missed this? And the debt claim?

  112. Sorry, Max, but while the Iran nuclear threat is something that our government should pay attention to, they are a lot further from posing a threat to the US than, say NK is. NK actually has missiles that can fly across an ocean - Iran doesn't. And yes, Iran probably is at the proverbial fork in the road, but sanctons only go so far, and sometimes have unintended and counter intuitive results (See, e.g. Cuba). They may be moving toward that, but shocking second hand stories about Iran's regime raping and peeing on protestors, according to reports that are at best secondhand related by the opposition leader have little to do with threats to Israel or the US. The accusations are shocking, and if true, disgusting, but they aren't surprising. I can't comment on the truth of them, but hey, the same or worse is going on as we blog here in no less than half a dozzen African countries. Sanctions are probably in order, and ar a pretty likely outcome, but without an international consensus that we don't have they won't stabilize Iran or prevent Iran's nuclear ambitions, whatever they are.

  120. "Sorry, Max, but while the Iran nuclear threat is something that our government should pay attention to, they are a lot further from posing a threat to the US than, say NK is. NK actually has missiles that can fly across an ocean - Iran doesn't."

Given the role Iran is playing in the Israeli/Palestinian coflict, their help to the Taliban, their activity in Lebanon and Iraq and the roles their proxies play in Africa and SA, Iran is far more active against us than NK. And Iran has killed US soldiers. Iran has also been the main supplier to terror groups we have been discussing. I do not see the President of NK on the Interpol hit list, do you?

" And yes, Iran probably is at the proverbial fork in the road, but sanctons only go so far, and sometimes have unintended and counter intuitive results (See, e.g. "

So you compare sitting down with a regime whose clerics sanctify rape as just for obtaining confessions and you are a lawyer? You are suspicious of the claims made against the regime and that leaders who risk being hung are liars? Name one country besides South Africa in Africa that represents anywhere near the threat Iran does?

"Sanctions are probably in order, and ar a pretty likely outcome, but without an international consensus that we don't have they won't stabilize Iran or prevent Iran's nuclear ambitions, whatever they are"

You mean destabilize Iran, I assume. No, sanctions at this point unless they block oil will just hurt Iran and not prevent nukes. Perhaps the spector of war is the only thing that will make Iran blink. Whether we can make Iran blink is another story, but the administration is being moved now to put a big stick on the table.

Read the first link I offered from Bloomberg and how different is that from what Gates did with an air craft carrier (not exactly the smartest move). Of course when Gates did this under Bush he was accused of preparing to strike Iran. Democrats I predict will get caught in their own characterizations. Ordering new super bunker busters is another move to ramp up the stick, but the pressure is building for a strike and Obama's plan so far has delayed sanctions and seems now to arrive back at the same starting point we saw a year or so ago. It almost looks like a Bush play at this point.

As I said the clock is running out and I wonder if Democrats understand the risks. Moving now to ramp up a stick is not taken very seriously by Iran. About the onlt thing that will would be a new joint Israeli/US preparation for the inevitable should the Mullahs continue along their path. If Russia was caught trying to deliver S-300 to Iran, they are pretty much out of the picture at the moment other than blocking sanctions which they will likely do thus increasing Iran's need for those 3-300s.

At the toughest moment, the US is at new lows with Israel. We are facing problems in Afghanistan and Pakistan with new fronts in Yemen and Iraq opening up. What we see now in the latest WH movesis a return to Bush posturing with an Obama smile. Hillary talked about making force credible from the start and pre-conditions. We have pre-conditions and that is Iran will not discuss their nuclear program. Hillary also advocated negotiating from a position of strength. This doesn't happen when you have Middle East bloggers claiming Obama is looking to simply save face and argueing more with Israel than mutual enemies..

  125. Sociopathy on the Right: Ayn Rand and the Triumph of Conservative Cultism

Yet as bizarre as his words may seem at first blush, they actually illustrate with bold clarity the fundamental (and increasingly common) core of the conservative belief system. They speak to the sociopathy that is at the heart of the far-right worldview. It is a worldview that holds, quite simply, that doing for others is contemptible; that doing for self is the purpose of human life; that altruism and service are somehow pathologies pushed by collectivists and should be subordinated to selfishness and greed.

"Cyan already has 20 customers, mostly regional telephone companies, cable operators and data centers, Hatfield said. It has been targeting independent carriers, who stand to benefit from $7.2 billion in federal stimulus funds for rural U.S. broadband networks."

  129. Posted by: maxtrue | September 14, 2009 9:45 PM : We've got to do something about this "death" thing. How about a war on dying? This is of course humanity's greatest scandal of which we spend the greater part of our lives in denial.

Extra funny. Why the hell didn't someone think of this before ? Let's get a Death Tsar in the WH. He could appoint some panels. Blue Ribbon, of course. I'd rule out Dr. Kevorkian.
