Hope all are enjoying the 4th run-up.You do know that Jefferson and Adams died on the 4th after a seminal correspondence. Hope your day is great all.
Please let me respond to XRepublican's cheap shot last night.
1. Why X Repub is wrong about the sleazy Obama/Edwards move in Michigan
http://stubbornfacts.us/politics/the_cannibals_feast#comment-13528
And Obama and Edwards pulled their names off the ballot a half hour before the deadline so Clinton could not follow suit. This was a sleazy move between a desperate Obama and an Edwards who should have never run. Try as you will XRepub, facts are tough things to obscure. Hillary lost the primary on this move.
2. And this is the Afghan history, not what XRepub would have us believe. Prayers for our soldiers fighting it out today. Had we followed up the Soviet withdrawal with economic aid, maybe we would not be in Afghanistan today.
Let us start with Mister Wizard: http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/BRZ110A.html
“The objective of the intervention, as spelled out by Brezinski, was to trap the Soviets in a long and costly war designed to drain their resources, just as Vietnam had bled the United States. The high level of civilian casualties that this would certainly entail was considered but set aside. According to one senior official, "The question here was whether it was morally acceptable that, in order to keep the Soviets off balance, which was the reason for the operation, it was permissible to use other lives for our geopolitical interests." Carter's CIA director Stansfield Turner answered the question: "I decided I could live with that." According to Representative Charles Wilson, a Texas Democrat.”
“The mujahideen consisted of at least seven factions, who often fought amongst themselves in their battle for territory and control of the opium trade. To hurt the Russians, the U.S. deliberately chose to give the most support to the most extreme groups. A disproportionate share of U.S. arms went to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, "a particularly fanatical fundamentalist and woman-hater."' According to journalist Tim Weiner, " [Hekmatyar's] followers first gained attention by throwing acid in the faces of women who refused to wear the veil. CIA and State Department officials I have spoken with call him 'scary,' 'vicious,' 'a fascist,' 'definite dictatorship material."
There was, though, a kind of method in the madness: Brezinski hoped not just to drive the Russians out of Afghanistan, but to ferment unrest within the Soviet Union itself. His plan, says author Dilip Hiro, was "to export a composite ideology of nationalism and Islam to the Muslim-majority Central Asian states and Soviet Republics with a view to destroying the Soviet order." Looking back in 1998, Brezinski had no regrets. "What was more important in the world view of history?... A few stirred-up Muslims or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of the Cold War>" TWT.com
How many helicopters, fixed wing aircraft , tanks and armored vehicles were destroyed by WHAT weapons Carter supplied? During Reagan’s terms more than 4 billionn was spent in covert aid. Tell us how much Carter gave covert actions? What anti-aircraft weapon did Carter give? Anyone watching Charlie Wilson’s War would know Xrepub has got it wrong. Perhaps he should read this: http://www.historycommons.org/context.jsp?item=a78ciaafghanistan#a78ciaafghanistan
And let us not forget that XRepub would have us believe Carter was the real Commie killer and Reagan just a wanna-be. Thought I was sleeping X?

Max,
However you dice it, it's over. . it's history. You say she lost it because of this move. I say she lost it because her crew miscalculated with the complete process. The bottom line is that in the end the primary results was in the hands of the SDs for whatever reasons. Both tully and xr said as much. DNC = SDs

Rezdog, I am not trying to overturn an election. I brought it up because since the move by Obama and Edwards it has been revealed Edwards should not have even run. It makes the Michigan move EVEN sleazier. What I tried to remind people last night was why more registered Democrats voted for Hillary. I tried to show how Hillary's vilified foreign policy approach during the primary is now key to sane strategy. Obama co-opted her views after bashing them during the campaign.
People talk of the mandate Obama won and how he is destiny's choice. I bring up the hidden facts to show Hillary could easily have carried that mandate and that Obama now takes many of Hillary's formerly vilified positions. So when X calls me a Republican, he might as well call Hillary one too. You see the battle is still on regarding this issue.
I will not keep silent as some here pervert history to promote their political agenda. X does it all the time. Solar's rather complete disinterest in the suffering of the world is quite amazing. Iran plans to put the Brits on trial. Many here think events around the world contain no threat to our own liberty. Our disinterest in Afghanistan after the Soviets left is how militancy grew and eventually controlled Afghanistan. I find his concern for Israelis, lip service at best. I don't think the VP and SECSTATE should have to explain to the President why he must speak up for Liberty or what a coup really is.
Despite the primary results, we will still fight the ideological battles, which we do here every day. Some things have not changed Rezdog. And it would be honest at least for Obama supporters to admit his move with Edwards in Michigan. That would be like getting Obama to admit he was wrong about the surge or the Kyl Bill. Facts are facts, used his last minute bailout from Michigan with Edwards to turn Iowa and that proved to be his key play. He doubled teamed Hillary with Edwards help. In fact Edwards, Dodd, Daschle, Richardson all worked to beat Hillary down. A fine group of people who were instrumental in Obama's triumph, now spun as unstoppable. And where are these people now?
I will continue to say what many supporters of Hillary think. Tomorrow, think where would be had France not helped us against our violent revolution from England. Think about that as thousands of Iranians are torture or imprisoned, as nations are threatened with radical Islamists. Maybe our Founders should have waited until a peaceful Independence from England could be achieved. And think what Jefferson would have admonished us to do today in the face of grave threats to the “approaches of our markets” and the sustainability of “freedom and liberty”.

I suggested that you do it here for a specific reason. I think xr and your buddy Tully both referred to the DNC as mostly responsible for the MI/FL fiasco.
Now, no doubt things would be different IF Hillary had won. But she didn't.

I strongly disagree.Hillary lost because the Liberal Democratic Party establishment wanted who they perceived to be the more liberal candidate and that was Obama. It would have been much different had they counted all the votes but sadly they chose to use a Republican tactic from the 2000 election and just rob the voters in 2 states of there votes..I voted for Obama but I'm not a Democrat any longer and unless there's reform in the primary process I will not be again...Sour grapes maybe but its how I feel....

I need a Spanish translation of a beautiful Ranchera song. When you run it through the on line sources it turns into gibberish, so there must be quite a lot of dialect in it: I know enough to get the vague gist, but would like an accurate rendering if possible:
La Negra Noche
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofGLAInf22E
La negra noche, tendió su manto
Surgió la niebla, murió la luz.
Y en las tinieblas de mi alma triste
Como una estrella brotaste tú.
Vén, he iluminado la herida senda
Por donde vaga loca ilusión.
Dáme tan solo una esperanza
Que por tí sigue mi corazón.
Cuando en las noches
Nace el rocío
Y en los jardines
nace la flor
Así en mi alma niña adorada
Nació mi amor.
Y veo que asoma
tras la ventana
Tu rostro de ángel
encantador
Siento la dicha.
Dentro de mi alma no hay tinieblas
Ya no hay tinieblas, ya salio el sol.

I totally agree about the disinterest and apathy that has been shown over the past few decades.
Each president would go to the Middle East for a photo op - and try a bit to get something done to no avail.
And I maintain that one of the potential up-sides from W's Iraq adventure - is that now we have a dog in the fight. Thousands and thousands of them.
Sure we would have had troops in Afghan - but place is pretty much the battlefield for world powers anyways. (A modern gladiator ring of sorts.)
Of course we always had a dog in the fight - since nuclear weapons is our greatest challenge - but that is another thing we tend to put at the back of our minds.
But our decision to go into Iraq has engaged us in the MidEast - while also fanning the flames of hatred.
Some good may come of W's actions - but none will come from his style.
Humility and respect works good over there. And that is not always America's forte (but hey - what can you expect from a bunch of Revolutionaries!!)
Happy 4th!

Bob, the day before the landing, Stinky, I, and the kids drove from our home on Nellis AFB to beautiful downtown Las Vegas and bought a used 21-inch color TV.
The next couple of days we spent watching events on the moon unfold. Totally enthralling.
Hard to believe it was 40-years ago. I still have copies of Life magazine and the Chicago Tribune showing the landing.
Twenty years later, my Dad and I got the grand tour of the Kennedy Space Center. To think that they were able to achieve the unachievable through guts and moxie and virtually nothing else shows how much we've lost since Apollo.

"I strongly disagree.Hillary lost because the Liberal Democratic Party establishment wanted who they perceived to be the more liberal candidate and that was Obama."
Hillary was to the left of Obama on major issues including healthcare and her timetable to get out of Iraq. She was also more partisan which appealed to the left.
She lost because she voted for Iraq. She lost many voters on the left and in the center for that vote. And it also allowed Obama to position himself to the left - by keeping the Iraq issue at the fore - even while working to the center (either because that is how he thinks - or because they were already looking ahead to the general.
And any conversation must mention the Obama ground game - which has set the Democrats up incredibly well in the near term. Hillary came in with the singular Clinton Machine - and Obama built up a grass-roots movement that went toe-to-toe with it and slayed that dragon. I'll roll the dice on that guy and his team.
And I think the Obama administration thus far has demonstrated they earned and deserved that election.

If she goes down as a martyr because of the media's over-the-top politics of personal destruction. Then hooray for her.

I would have voted for a diff. party other than an indi......if H C would have beaten O.....When she and the big dawg were out lawyered out in Iowa, she lost it. I was all down hill from there. She lost it all, when she underestimated O, imo. That is not to say that: Donna B, Dean, Daschle, the D N C; ....with all the rest of them, did not smell blood in the water.
I still think that she would have been the best overall choice. Daschle would not be getting over on her, like he is on Obama. I Obama screws up, it will be the end for any minority for quite a while.

Hi Solarman
I agree.I believed Hillary when she said she was a work horse not a show horse.I had never even given a dime to any politician before but I gave $2000 to her campaign for President. There are many reasons why things happened the way they did.I support President Obama fully and I hope he can be as good a President as Bill Clinton...

"big business is maneuvering Mitt Romney into place."
Yeah, but Patsi, don't you think they may both end up in the lineup. That link that Warren posted said she wanted to spend more time campaigning for candidates. That doesn't sound like someone who's planning to get out of politics. Whatever happens, I'll be surprised if they isn't a woman running on both tickets in the next election.
The stuff I've seen on the web is all over the place.

This is the first analysis I've seen.
Analysis: Palin Plays by Her Own Rules, Again
"A Republican strategist who got to know her over the past year, and who declined to be identified in order to offer a candid opinion, said this: "She has a base in the party that's motivated like no one else's, and this decision won't bother them. I don't know if she'll run. I don't know if she could win if she ran. But I'm sure she has a shot. If she runs, she'll face a skeptical press and fairly stark division between her supporters and skeptics. But she commands attention, she connects with voters better than most and she's one of the toughest minded people I've met."
"....I imagine," he said, "she'll continue to surprise us." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/03/AR2009070302216.html

I used to always tell my friends to not stare at the Obvious when both Bushes were in office.....told them to look out for what Baker, and all the other Bushes were doing, and what the real boss ( Ma Bush) was telling them to do. Baker was the key to all of the R's successes no?

Hey Solar,
Working for a living. Taking care of four major corporate web sites now, wish I really was twins and not just a gemini.
Don't stop by that often, but was lurking tonight. How ya doing? Hear ya givin' em hell every once in a while. :^)
Looks like Orlando isn't in my immediate future Tony. Have a possible in downtown Washington D.C. That would make life interesting and the commute long.
On Bill, was he really that good? I liked his foreign policy, but his domestic policy was largely shaped by the Republicans in Congress and overshadowed by impeachment. The economy skyrocketed but more from productivity gains brought about by the Internet boom than a manufacturing increase. Not to mention a lot of the groundwork for the current depression was laid by Rubin, Summers, and Greenspan.
Hillary has been doing an incredible job with an inherited disaster. I don't know anyone else that could do as well. Wish we had a Treasury Secretary as good.

Yeah, lots Ron Paul says makes sense if you read what he really says and not what people say he says. There's absolutely no reason we have bases all around the world any more. A few staging and refueling points maybe.
He's also for eliminating the monopolies that HMOs have. I'm kind of liking the idea of a health care co-op anyone can join. I still need to get health insurance long enough at one place to see what my brain tumor is doing. I could probably use it as an excuse around here, but I think it's more fun that ya'll think I'm just crazy. At least I'm only talking to the voices, they're not talking back.
Of course, with Max around I guess I don't stand out as much anymore. lol. There always seems to be a competition for the Trailmix mad master.
Was talking to a special forces friend about operations on US bases in Egypt post Carter agreement. My friends always got stuck their running and repairing generator sets used to retrieve barrier nets at the ends of runways.
Used to love celebrating the 1 - 4 of July in Niagra. Nice area, and lots to see and do.

Over 750 bases, world wide. Do we really need them all?...no!!. How much $ can be saved by closing a lot of them down that is not needed. Just a lot of expensive coming, and goings, just to spy on other country's.
Max. I have him calling me names, doesn't care too much for XR's Historical facts either. Never seen a guy use so much bs to say...Bombs Awyay, but I like him, he keeps it civil. I think that he would be fun to have a cpl of drinks with. I could really drive him nuts. For him it would just be a short walk to-nuts. HA!

Solar thanks. I do take offense to that classical dismissal of yours and some others: War, bombs away, kill em neocon, Republican warmongering etc. etc. etc. etc.
Try classical anthropology. To avoid the eventual non cooperation of non kin free loaders and disrupters, altruism gave us sacrifice and punishment, responsibility and a shared system of justice. If we think enemies of Liberty represent a true threat, it requires of us the sacrifice for and promotion of our common values, entering into alliances and attempting to desuade bad behavior through international sanctions, embargoes and in some cases even by force. It doesn't mean we use force, or brandish it around like yahos. It must be credible and have some support in the world at large. You must make public the bad behavior and defeat it in the battle of words before you beat it in the battle field.
I use just one example. Italy and Germany could bring crushing pressure on the Khomieni regime. Russia could suspend any military or nuclear materials. If Iran suspended oil exports they would go down hard. This isn't a warmongering move. It is an attempt to punish bad behavior and reward good behavior. It is so basic, perhaps you miss this. Instead we remard bad behavior. Was there also a dude named Nyeta Pavlov?
So again, please understand that Jefferson wasn't a warmonger, neither was Franklin though he deplored Sharia law. Washington would have emptied Gitmo to the gallows, while Lincoln hung the first American slave trader in New York after the Press wanted him free.
Every time we succumb to domestic obseesion v giving a shit about the world and turn away from it, we end up fighting for our very lives. We were not alone in throwing off unjustice rule by England and we were prepared to fight to the death. Otherwise, Solar, what does the 4th of July mean to you?
After a year of war with the British, we delivered our Declaration of Independence......what a warmongering rowdy bunch of bastards those founding brothers were.......I wonder how much Jefferson would like Chavez.......

Shortly after I began participating in this forum, which at that time was populated with a vocal contingent of HRC supporters, I requested reasons why I should have cast my vote for her. I received no satisfactory answers that convinced me that I had erred in my decision. Among those offered, the reasons were based on either her gender, the achievements of her husband, or her knowledge and efforts concerning health-care reform; the last not being an issue of paramount importance to me. Her lack of senatorial accomplishments was as under-whelming as her competitor's, the current president.
H. Clinton, as a leading cabinet official, is now in a capacity to bolster her credentials and positively impact her prospects for a future presidential campaign. If she is successful towards that end, especially in dealing with an extremely challenging foreign-policy environment, I will be confident in my support for her.
This is all ancient history at this point anyway. The primaries were argued ad nauseam here, and with a great deal of rancor and vitriol. I have no desire to re-hash those arguments again beyond the minor point I was trying to make earlier, and the one I attempt to make now challenging your implication that my vote was cast in ignorance.
Have a good holiday, all.

Perhaps you miss that these sanctions are what give the hardliners power in their country. If we act like the enemy - the moderates don't have a shot.
Most sanctions - hurt the people and empower the leader we are attempting to undermine.
I am for strict arms control - but economic sanctions are often cutting of your nose to spite your face.

some ones have expressed some small interest in my little fadder day story......about how i traded in the guitar for the screw-gun, sliding table saw and the router.......it's a good story made all the more so by being true-ish........i mentioned working 3 nights a week in an un-airconditioned florida beer joint...............web-foot critters was our stock in trade........but, see.....we hadda go there because the old mother was sick......we eased her into the other world......the partner got a job with the state and i got a job playing in a joint......i did 3 nights a week and was free in the day for on the job nurse training.......i got good at it.......and the dotter was underfoot at around the age of 4 when the older girl gave up the ghost.......
well.....when we first made the florida panhandle scene.....i figured piece of cake......there's 4 joints in town......I went to the holiday inn.....they say they only book road acts......maybe 3 times a year.......i go to the other joint down the road......they dont use bands, cause they just make trouble.....so that leaves 2 joints.......one is the lowest of the lowest type of human drinking establishment and the other is just a hole in the wall that someone sells beer outa.........but guess what......when i go in there's a mountain of musical equiptment in the corner on a make-shift stage.......I figure, "goddam cripes"......but anyway to make a long story short the guy sitting there playing was not averse to having a nashville type piano player sitting there with him ...........................

| July 4, 2009 4:49 AM
but the funny thing about that particular job.........down in florida........it was an almost exact replica of the first job i ever played when i was 8 yrs old.....and the whole time i worked it i kept thinking.......circle......full circle........right back where you started from......I always figured any circle deserves a nice tangent.........

I think it was me Sturge that asked and the only thing wrong with your story today is that you ran out of story before I wanted to quit reading it. I just bet you have had some interesting experiences. Ya know I would rather know more about the people who blog here than the creeps we have to talk about everyday but this is a political blog. Oh well.
So Sarah may be calling it quits? I wouldn't blame her. Now she can see just how much money she can make after all the trauma she has had to endure and laugh all the way to the bank. It just ain't worth it sister. If Hillary couldn't break that ceiling, I really don't think you can.
Maybe Sarah will get a job with Fox News, that's where the power is, in the news media. Maybe she already has one??

well, craig, we've laid the ground work for you on this one. starting with my call that she's heading for the senate (crystal ball sees cabal: stevens steps down early, lt gov as gov appoints palin).
we run the gamut from dooty's
"1. She is bat shit crazy!
2. There is a big problem just below the surface that is headed toward the top and soon to explode"
all the way to ct and others' fox trot prediction. (actually she would make a better foil for joe than mika but there's more money at fox and she does have a mass communications degree doesn't she?)

Sturg, I have a nephew who saved money during high school by playing piano and singing in dives around Cleveland. The best part of the experience was that it taught him all about booze. I don't believe he's ever had a social drink in the 25-years since he graduated. And he did major in music at Oberlin.
He still does music, writing and acting professionally--and makes money at it.

Carol, can't you make an autumn (relatively speaking) crop of them? Here, I expect to have them until the first killing frost or hard freeze--perhaps into December.
In Florida, I had a winter crop of them in our guest bedroom which had an unobstructed view to the East. They thrived, but presented me with serious challenges as to where they could be dangled. It was like a jungle with all the vines.
It was simply too windy having them on our balcony.

Flatus, I only have three tomato plants in containers, a Celebrity, a grape and a cherry. It has been very hot here with no rain. I water more than three times a day which means coming home for lunch to water. They look good so far and I have enough tomatoes to give many away.
In a garden, I've never been able to keep them going for long. They just burn up. Maybe it was that it was just too hot for me to get out to take care of them. It's been years since I planted a real garden. I had this Spring passion to work in the dirt and then along came the hell of summer and my passion wilted.
I have overhead shade now where I have my tomatoes placed. We'll see.

Same here Carol. What the sun doesn't bake, the insects destroy. I remember when AC (haven't seen him in a while, we've lost a lot of good people) suggested putting them in a cellar, where it's cool and dry and they last a long time. But who has a cellar here. No one, that's who.

And I enjoyed Jamie's tale of the tiger.
Made me think of Stinky's confrontation with a Siberian tiger in Korea. It must have happened during the Japanese occupation.
It was early Spring and she went up into the hills behind her family's farm house to glean whatever edibles might have emerged in the last day or two. Then she looked up and she was virtually face-to-face with the tiger.
She says she shrieked and set a new land speed record for the downhill 2k panic sprint.
I surmise that the tiger recognized that she was just a kid and was therefore off limits. At least that's what I like to think.
Stinky still trembles when she relates the experience.

Flatus, I think you must be right. No doubt that Tiger could have outrun her, no matter how fast she was sprinting. Maybe the tiger wasn't hungry, or as you said, didn't see her as a threat. Whatever reason, glad she's here to talk about it. :)

Chloe, dehydrating some of the excess tomatoes is a neat way to preserve some. I made a meatless dish last night that I found years ago on some item I bought. It's called Rancher's pasta. Saute lots of garlic in EVOO, then add cut up dehydrated tomatoes and sliced black olives and saute for a few minutes. If the tomatoes aren't stored in a oil solution, you need to boil them a little while first to soften them.
Add the cooked pasta and stir. Then sprinke crumbled feta and parmesian cheese. I didn't have just the parmesian so I added that 6 pizza cheese. Add a salad and some toasted Italian bread and you have a great summer meal.

Don't fuss about it. It is a very common noise made by bloggers. I used to just surf around without thinking about it as well. Now If I'm on a personal blog (as opposed to political or news site), I make it a point to say something, anything, just to let the other human being know they aren't shouting in the wilderness.

To all of you, Happy Fourth of the July.
I still think you ALL know exactly where Jefferson would stand on the Honduras issue and it was Craig that gave us Jefferson at the top.
From the email and tweets from Iran, the protesters ask the world to bring the regime down throught sanctions and stopping gasoline imports.
Our revolution was not peaceful, nor is the defense of liberty a bloodless affair, Still, no one here makes a coherent arguement against the non military means of international justice. Perhaps before the day is over we all read the Declaration of Independence again. The only way to defend HUman Rights without violence is to use all other means. Warren, at this point our foreign policy is not run in order to make the Mullahs happy. They despise Jefferson and our LIberal Democracy, or is that not clear enough to you?
Palin? It is simple, She gives the GOP a head start on the next election with her LT Gov running things as Gov. She will then run for senator or take a spot in the media in a bid for President. It should not be suprising. Look at Spitzer's tactics (before the sex scandal).
Have a great day you all......

The black night extended it's reach
assuring darkness, the light (of day) died,
and in the darkness of my sad soul
you burst like a star.
fine, have I illuminated the deep wound
from where this crazy illusion, comes from.
Give me just one hope,
because of you my heart follows.
When in the nights
the dawn is born,
and in the gardens
the flower is born
like that my adored child
my love was born.
I see that behind the window,
you assume the body of
an engaging angel
I feel the myth.
inside of my soul,
there is no darkness
there is no darkness anymore,
the has come out.

Both structures, it is said, feature the “same windows, same wood, same products.” Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources."

New IAEA Head: No Evidence Iran Seeking Nuclear Weapons
Outgoing Head Cited 'Gut Feeling' in Accusations
New International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Yukiya Amano may have been the candidate of choice for Western nations, and in particular Israel, but he sought to assure the world today that he would remain independent and would seek to de-politicize the office.
Yukiya Amano
In particular, Amano noted that going through the IAEA’s documents he didn’t see any evidence that Iran was trying to develop nuclear weapons. The IAEA had repeatedly certified that Iran was not diverting any of its civilian program’s enriched uranium to any other purpose, but outgoing chief Mohamed ElBaradei claimed to have a “gut feeling” that Iran secretly wanted the technology.
Amano seems less inclined, at least so far, to rely on his gut and is looking for hard evidence to back up the allegations by Western nations in general and Israel in particular, that the Iranians have a covert program.
He did however claim that the Iranian government had an ‘obligation’ to abandon its civilian program, despite the lack of evidence of anything untoward in the program, citing demands from the UN Security Council. Those demands are separate from any Iranian obligations under the IAEA’s protocols however, under which Iran would seem to have every right to civilian energy generation.

Max,
You say that, " Im two faced when it comes to Israel". It is very simple: just don't read any thing into what I say. I said that they shold have all that they are asking for: They should not be afraid of missile strikes, they should be recognized as a state. etc, etc.
But they should not colonize by for the lands of the Palestinians, period. They have forgotten how they suffered, and are causing many, many deaths of the innocents.
Israeli DM Recommends ‘Partial’ Lifting of Gaza Embargo
Govt Would Allow Clothing, Chickens Into Strip
July 03, 2009
With the residents of the Gaza Strip reporting severe shortages of even the most basic goods, it is being reported that the Israeli Defense Ministry is recommending a partial lifting of the crippling embargo which has prevented the importation of all but a handful of humanitarian supplies over the past several years. The proposal is awaiting the approval of Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
The new plan would allow increased supplies of soup, fish, and canned goods ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, and would also renew shipments of presently banned goods, such as clothing and egg-laying chickens.
Israeli defense officials hope that the move would be a goodwill gesture to help secure a final deal to exchange prisoners with the Hamas government and finally win the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been held for years.
The Israeli government has faced growing international criticism for refusing to allow goods into the Gaza Strip, in particular declining to allow cement in to repair the damage done during its invasion earlier this year. Earlier this week the Israeli Navy captured a ship attempting to deliver humanitarian goods to the strip, and has been holding the activists on board since.

Max,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how is that Warren?- the commas. :-)
More evidence of Murder. No less than when they suffered in the past.
Report Cites Indiscriminate Drone Use by Israel
JERUSALEM – The concerted effort of international human rights activists to rein in violations of laws of war was given a major impetus when Human Rights Watch researchers presented a report [.pdf] Tuesday on the unbridled use by the Israeli military of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCLAV), commonly known as drones, during Israel’s 22-day assault on Hamas in Gaza at the beginning of the year.
Titled “Precisely Wrong,” the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report focuses on six cases of Israeli drone-launched missile attacks in which 29 Palestinian civilians, eight of them children, were killed. Based on cross-referenced eyewitness accounts corroborated by doctors, as well as ballistics and forensic evidence collected on the attack sites, the report asserts that “in none of the cases did HRW find evidence that Palestinian fighters were present in the immediate area of the attack at the time.”
“These attacks violated international humanitarian law,” the report states in unequivocal terms, following a 10-day investigation.
Marc Garlasco, senior military analyst at the emergencies program of HRW, estimates that at least 87 civilians were killed in 42 drone attacks. “Israel’s targeting choices are unacceptable and unlawful,” he declared at a press conference in East Jerusalem, “especially [considering] that UCLAV provide the most precise platform in the military arsenal, and that Israel is the world leader in drone technology.”

Biden: US May End Iraq Commitment if Violence Returns
VP's Iraq Visit Greeted With Protests
July 03, 2009
Speaking with Iraqi officials on the second day of his three day visit, Vice President Joe Biden warned that the United States might reconsider its military commitment to the nation if “Iraq were to revert to sectarian violence or engage in ethnic violence,” insisting that the “American people would have no interest” in going through that situation yet again.
Violence in the nation has been on the rise in recent months, and has primarily been sectarian violence targeting Shi’ite neighborhoods and religious sites. Biden did not make it clear at what level the death toll would have to be to constitute a return to sectarian violence, though nearly 400 were killed last month alone.
Biden did not exactly receive a warm welcome on the streets of Baghdad, as supporters of Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr took to the streets of Sadr City, chanting “no, no American, no, no occupation” and burning an American flag.
The US still has 131,000 soldiers in Iraq, and is planning to keep over 90% of them in the nation through next year. The Obama Administration has pledged to get the level to 50,000 by August 2010, but a referendum to be held later this month could force an early ouster.

And dark lord, many, maybe even you, will find other personality defects in the next woman who dares to run for high office. (and again I'm no Palin fan).
There are no perfect women just as there are no perfect men but men are allowed to have their flaws. Hillary was about as perfect as one can get and tough as nails. If she couldn't break that ceiling, I am not looking for any other woman to do it in my lifetime.
And I blame women for it. They have the power but just haven't realized it yet. If and when they do, watch out buddy. You might find yourself barefoot and pregnant.

That condition might not be that far off. The unemployment rate for men is much higher than that for women. As manufacturing and assembly jobs are eliminated through modernization or offshoring, those jobs disappear. Women are now on a par with men in law and medicine. More boys drop out of school than girls. The real kicker is that the world simply does not need as many employees as it once did and women are less expensive than men.
The men could well find themselves at home raising the kiddies and volunteering at the PTA in fairly short order.

Carol, You know what that song was saying. The same as the Engles version, only different.
Do you want to get CNN on your pc. or lap, that you have at your camp?.
I lost all of my cable stations for a while. I won't pay for any. I know how to get them free from the sats, in space. They are called FTA, free to air. They are from Canada, or Germany, etc, and anyone can get them. But it takes a lot of knowing how to draw them down from the satellites in space.
Go to...............www.channelchooser.com ... it is free and you don't have to register, if you don't want too: Scroll down and you should see CNN live news; I have requested other channels like the Int. History , the science, and others.
When they are available......will let Sturg know about it then also. He would want the History International for his ancient wars that are on that channel.
If you are in the home page; Go to the news on it and click there....then scroll down on it. The Cnn-is live, while most of the others are not. I listen to it on my pc when the R. Sanchez comes on, the Sunday shows, or just to see what is on in the a. m. during the week.

doesn't nature in the long run reduce the number of males, thru war/territorial aggression/ high risk behaviour, even tho there are usually more male births than female? the pendulum swings. too many and the social fabric is torn to shreds and then it starts over again until the next upheaval.

I mean contrast Sarah with Hillary. Obviously Palin is no policy wonk - and Sarah's experience is limited (and sheltered).
But the major reason for Palin's success was that she came across as real. She got awkward and flustered just like the rest of us. But she looks like she believes what she is saying and she is passionate about it.
(Hillary and Palin do have one thing in common - they are completely unafraid to make audacious, jaw-dropping statements. Palin plays it off with a twang in her voice - and Clinton uses her steely death-stare.)

"A day to celebrate and aspire:"
"This weekend, our family will join millions of others in celebrating America. We will enjoy the glow of fireworks, the taste of barbeque, and the company of good friends. As we all celebrate this weekend, let's also remember the remarkable story that led to this day.
Two hundred and thirty-three years ago, our nation was born when a courageous group of patriots pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to the proposition that all of us were created equal.
Our country began as a unique experiment in liberty -- a bold, evolving quest to achieve a more perfect union. And in every generation, another courageous group of patriots has taken us one step closer to fully realizing the dream our founders enshrined on that great day.
Today, all Americans have a hard-fought birthright to a freedom which enables each of us, no matter our views or background, to help set our nation's course. America's greatness has always depended on her citizens embracing that freedom -- and fulfilling the duty that comes with it.
As free people, we must each take the challenges and opportunities that face this nation as our own. As long as some Americans still must struggle, none of us can be fully content. And as America comes ever closer to achieving the perfect Union our founders dreamed, that triumph -- that pride -- belongs to all of us.
So today is a day to reflect on our independence, and the sacrifice of our troops standing in harm's way to preserve and protect it. It is a day to celebrate all that America is. And today is a time to aspire toward all we can still become.
With very best wishes,
President Barack Obama

You sure have it right.I saw a report somewhere on the net yesterday, I think a clip from CNN.It said women are a 51% majority in this country yet makeup only 17% of the House and Senate...It does surprise me the lack of support women give one another.During the Democratic primaries i couldn't believe the amount of women I talked to that weren't outraged at the sexism directed at Hillary. Its still the same.I was at the gym the day after the Letterman slurs against Sara Palin and Mary Kay just to name 1 didn't think Letterman did anything wrong.I said what about saying Sarah looked like a slutty stewardess!! I finally got her to agree it was sexist but there was no outrage in her...Sad...I understand as I see examples of homophobia all the time.I was at the store today and 2 clerks said some product was so gay and they said it twice...I went by the aisle and said yes it is and so am I...Oh the look on there faces...I said see ya..

A man really doesn't know what he worth unless he goes toe-to-toe with a strong women, and visa versa. I wouldn't be caught dead, with a week minded women. I did the floors, and washed cloths today. I don't feel like I used Judy this week. she cut the grass yesterday:
Whatever needs to be done, we just do it. I like my shirts ironed the way that I like them, so I do them all of the time. we share the cooking, we don't take turns or nothing like that, just do it, but she does wash more dishes than I do. :-)
I used to ask this women bartender that I knew: When does sex start mentally or physically? Poor gal she couldn't win, but she was smart and played along. She would say, "mentally" then before I could say anything,
say how did you like what we just did. I said yeah, I need a smoke and a cold bud. She was as tough as she was smart. We didn't get along very well physically and it didn't last long, but we were friends for a long time.

Hi Solar. Did you listen to Biden. He gloated in the fact Saddam is dead. Remember, Iraqis aren't stuipid. They understand Biden suggested Iraqis should split up their country. They are also aware of the many Iraq is Lost people in Liberal ranks. Did you think Biden would be greeted better than Bush. At least Biden didn't duck a shoe. I didn't see you comment on the recent branding of Quds in Iraq a terror group, but let's leave that alone for today.
I would say a startling move happened today. Egypt allowed an Israel sub go through the Suez. It is a dolphin class sub capable of firing nuclear cruise missiles out of its torpedo tubes. The new IAEA head refused to comment on the trading of information between NK and Iran and the concern by the former IAEA head that Iran is moving towards nukes. In an apparent move to derail the build up of force aimed at Iranian nuclear facilities, Ahmadinejad did exactly what I predicited. He is back to
talking" in an attempt to string out Western apathy even more. Rumors have an Ianian test not too far off in the future.
July 4, 2009
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants public talks with U.S. President Barack Obama, CNN reported July 4, citing reports from the Iranian Student News Agency. Speaking to a group of medical school deans, Ahmadinejad reportedly said Iran will pursue “a new round of diplomatic activity” soon and that he wants talks with Obama to be “in front of the international media, not a sit-down behind closed doors in order to talk about matters.” Strafor
Israel and Egypt are apparently telling Ahmadinejad that they're not falling for this delaying tactic much longer.
Next, they should point out his Jewish roots which would be one of the most ironic footnotes of history:
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1246443708720&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
And if you think Iraqis are touchy about their oil, Iran is about to learn. Think Iraqis want to press their anger without 130,000 US troops backng them up? Perhaps Biden should have pointed this out to his detractors:

Watching A Capitol Fourth. Whose missing here? The Muppets gang is on stage singing.
Palin just made me crazy because she was so totally ill equipped for the position she was seeking. When pundits would team her and Clinton together as supposed equals, it made me want to gag. I think she used her looks, her family, and her religion to bamaboozle the base of the party for her own self aggrandizement. I don't find her even moderately likeable.
Having said that, she didn't deserve to be called names though there were times when she infuriated me enough with some vile appeal to prejudice that i probably contributed to the anti woman language though I did try to stick to issues.

One item that business should consider regarding a public option is workman's comp. The rates should go way down if all employees are covered by a plan since the only other reason for having it would be likelihood of being sued for negligence rather than medical bills and any rehab coverered under the health insurance.

Jamie, I think Palin's family is a big part of who she is. IMO most educated people with 5 kids are pretty family oriented. I think it would have been less complicated for her to keep them out of the way, get someone to take care of them at home. It certainly couldn't be easy traveling with them and trying to get up to par on all the issues. Maybe that is why she wasn't.
Then if she would have left them all at home, people would have said, she just dumps her family to focus on politics, what kind of mother/woman would do that?
Palin wasn't ready for prime time. That should be the issue. She did, however, excite a lot of passion in her party. I think she excited a lot of passion period. That may be one reason she pisses people off.

I don't even have to tell you how unfair and mean that was to say Champ. Especially after your post on how judgmental and intolerant people are of those that have different beliefs or are different from them. She's simply calling all bigotry 'bigotry' and calling those who practice it and then condemn others who do the same, hypocrites.
Sometimes you sound like you really get it, and other times you just sound mean. Maybe you can just say what you disagreed with, instead of being sarcastic.

Sturge, have you ever eaten the Dungeness Crabs? More meat for the effort and the meat is sweet. Where do you go for crabfest? A Red Lobster?
A couple of years ago the Wally World in town, farthest from my house, had Dungeness crabs for a little over 6 bucks a pound without the big shell, just their white jackets. You can't even get them that cheap up in the PNW where they grow them.
I'd steam them for a few minutes in a crab boil then cover them with butter, the sweet jar garlic, had to be the jar garlic, lemon juice and Tony's seasoning.
They were so good done that way that sometimes in my passion eating them I actually bit into my hand that was covered with the sauce. I'm drooling just thinking about them.

Hey Chloe, I did take some of the credit for the incident so I guess I get to share the award. Also, B wasn't totally bad, all the time, he had his good moments too. They were just overshawdowed by the cruelness that would suddenly pop out. Never really knew when it was coming. I think he wanted to control it but couldn't. My theory is that he was suffering some severe pain, either physically or mentally. You know I always have a theory.
Hope we didn't run Patsi off. We need her too much. We can't protect the women without her help.
Posted by: ct
| July 4, 2009 10:10 PM
I always have a theory too Carol.
But I gave up on that one long before he left. I know what you mean, but I also don't. Lets say a guy is a wife beater, but he's a nice guy to his friends at work. If you're the wife, you need to get out. Too many women stay, thinking the same thing you just said: ... but he's a nice guy sometimes. We all have our problems, but when one of those problems is extreme cruelty or evil, I say don't deal with that person. Don't look for the good in him (or her) because they're dangerous, to different degrees.

Chloe, he had two dogs that he took really good care of, even made them home cooked meals. IMO, that is an important sign that he has a good/unselfish heart. Other factors can lead people to do things that look and sound bad.
My experience of working with people who are in a lot of either physical or mental pain is that they have more of a tendency to lash out at others, often unwarranted. I'm not saying it was wrong to run him off, but still I don't see him as a totally bad guy. Would that be any more fair that what people are doing to Palin?

I was really being a little sarcastic about being so lucky for my comment being used and associated in connection with your assail on our misogynistic society.
If you follow my crazy metaphor, the All star pitcher is Palin while the 08 Phillies (great hitters) are the big bad public being mean to her due to no fault of their own other than her being out of their league and in their domain.
I make no judgment on how she was treated. In fact I'll agree with you but suggest Champ's and my remark was no more than what Jamie and Carol said about her ' being ill equipped or ' not ready for prime time".

"My experience of working with people who are in a lot of either physical or mental pain is that they have more of a tendency to lash out at others, often unwarranted."
Carol, I totally understand what you're saying and even agree with it. I'm thinking maybe we're talking about two different things. But I'm normally judging others by their behavior, since that's all I can see. I can guess about their pain and can even figure out where it's probably coming from. I understand peoples psychology pretty well, always have. But the point I'm making is, no matter 'why' they're behaving badly, we are still going to have to deal with the behavior. It's been my experience that most people don't change, unless they've already shown signs of doing so.
Sure, we can understand why they're doing it, so we may feel somewhat forgiving (and I often am), and think they can't help it. But so what? They still have those behavior problems. I realize you're dealing with convicts and you have to understand them. But in your personal life, would you really want to be involved in any way with most of those guys? I mean the 'evil' ones. Just because you understand 'why' they're evil, that doesn't make it forgivable. I know I'm using extremes here, but like I said, we may be talking about two different things.

But Tony, that's ok, imo. Because we are all free to make our judgments in anyway we choose, based on whatever reasons we have. It's all about trade offs. It worked for you, but not for me. That's understandable, and I sure wouldn't expect anyone else to come to the same conclusions I come to. I really enjoy our differences. I listen and I often change my mind.

It's just the same issue, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over... Palin, Palin, Palin. She seems to feel that if everyone isn't enraged to the same extent as her on this ONE particular issue, their opinion isn't worthy of respect. Challenge HER opinion in any way, and you're characterized as either stupid, or a bigot, or a combination of both, and somehow responsible for the plight of repressed women everywhere.
If anything, backlash to the misogynistic treatment of both Clinton and Palin, and yes it existed and I suppose still does, BOLSTERED their campaigns, as surrogates for both fomented rage by use of internet channels, like this one. Neither one lost because of 'misogyny'; Clinton lost due to miscalculation and poor administration, and Palin lost because she's a hypocritical light-weight. The latter's daughter went on a national tour promoting "abstinence" after having a child out-of-wedlock, for crying out loud, and Letterman is castigated for exploiting her for reading a joke off a teleprompter conceived by his staff of writers?! Todd Palin called Bristol's baby a "mistake" on national TV! He called his granddaughter a friggin' mistake! Could asinine statements by the Palins such as those have anything to do with the incredulity concerning her aptitude for governance? I would sure hope so.
It is very possible that misogyny in the media created negative pressure on the campaigns of both Clinton and Palin, but it wasn't the ONLY factor, and to assert otherwise is myopic. Clinton garnered approximately 18 million votes, if one remembers, and practically had the nomination handed to her on a silver platter in the preliminary stages, and somehow she dropped it. Is that Chris Matthews' fault? I had no idea Chris Matthews was so powerful, especially considering he was belittled by supporters of both Obama and Clinton in this particular forum. All of this happened LAST YEAR.
As far as the current and frequently anonymous negative characterization of Palin by those who have worked with her, most recently evidenced in the Vanity Fair article linked by this forum a few days ago, I personally would have to assume that there must be some truth in the assertions contained therein, for if Palin was perceived by conservatives to have national political potential, the fractured GOP would be riding her coat-tails, not stabbing her in the back. Everybody loves a winner, especially in politics, because winners make everyone rich; gender is irrelevant.
Women have more political clout than ever. It is neither 1969, nor 1989; it is, of course, 2009, and "the game has changed". Females occupy the positions of Secretary of State, Labor, Education, Homeland Security, EPA, UN Ambassador, and CEA (ok, so I looked it up), as well as Speaker of the House, and more congressional representation than ever. Are there gains to be made towards the end of proportionate representation? Possibly, if that is of importance to any particular individual. To not acknowledge the progress that has been made, and only focus on that which is personally disagreeable doesn't indicate reasoned consideration; which, of course, is only one man's opinion.
So, no, tony, I respectfully disagree, and have been called stupid by her (as have others), and have been told that she has no respect for my opinion. She would receive "better than that", chloe, if she afforded the same, once again, with all due respect. I appreciate your support for her, although I do not share it, and would articulate my opinions a less terse, acerbic way if not for reasons already stated. Considering the length of this post, perhaps one should be grateful I don't. My apologies.

"They understand Biden suggested Iraqis should split up their country."
Biden's proposal was not off-the-wall. Much of the violence over there continues to be Sunni vs. Shiite.
It might not have been the best idea - but at a minimum it showed Biden understood the problem - and could identify the three major ethnic groups at play over in Iraq - which is a lot more than I can say for most pols.
I think Biden will be received much more favorably than Bush.
(Which is not a high hurdle. Biden basically wins if they don't burn effigies of him in the streets.)

Watch out people who are helping to spread false rumors about Palin. She's coming after ya. Actually she found that being the Governor was too restricting, she couldn't get out there and do what she was called to do, whatever that is. And whatever she does, she will be criticized so I say, go for it sister.
I'm not sure being president is what she wants either. That may be too restricting also. I'll have to admit, she does make a good reality show. And money.... she can make a lot more money if she isn't restricted by a political office right now.
If I were her I would tell people I wasn't interested in any office. That might help keep the dogs off her tail. Sock in the big bucks and see how things go. She was relatively poor compared to other politicians because she wasn't born with that silver spoon in her mouth. Once she has gotten a good nest egg together then she can decide what else she wants to do.

I don't know who to blame for today's girls not growing-up as women in the truest sense of the word. I'm inclined to pin most of the blame on mothers and grandmothers who don't properly ground them in what women have suffered through, and what their mandatory role is in carrying the movement forward.
Consider this, perhaps 30-percent of men are strongly committed feminists. If that's the case, and I believe it is, then why are women consistently and systematically losing what they've gained in the past 100-years?

carol.....ive tried some of those large sized crabs from the grocery........they're ok but I like the fresh blues from the creek most.......crabfest has just become a euphemism for a fun music job as opposed to one where you have to work hard for your money.......(the spiney crustacean ramblers, or the mighty crabs of joy, mark 2) but when we played a biker joint we called it the mighty carbs of joy and that seemed to play better what with the other connotation for the word which refers to los mariposas del amor..........

That story Flatus, also points to a serious problem we have with post correction life. Many get out of jail/prison where they were taken care of and had structure to their lives for years. They leave and have no support system left and don't have a clue what to do. They commit another crime shortly after release and if they get by with it, good, if they don't, good, they go back to the structured, we'll take care of them lives they left.
If we want inmates to have success on the streets, reduce recitivism after long term incarceration, we have to make a better transition available. You would be surprised how many inmates I have coming to medical all stressed out because they are approaching release. Some don't even realize why they are in the medical department but after a short assessment I see it.
I have pondered this for a while now. They need a place available where they can live, barracks style, get some education/training for finding a place to live/work. They can even be used to do what so many illegal aliens come to the US to do. We could solve several problems here. Obama, I have some suggestions here.
Oprah had a angel project I heard about years back where some couple in California took in released inmates and had them help with this garden project. Gave them a place to live, a job and helped them with their transition. The excess garden produce feed the hungry. It may still be going.

Good morning, Tony! Do you have another beautiful Florida morning?
Stinky and I used to have two-hour breakfasts sitting by the windows of our 15th floor condo overlooking the Gulf. It was absolutely marvelous. I miss that part of Florida very much.
As a side note, I'm a birder. Watching birds in flight from above rather than below is a really interesting experience. I miss that, too!

Carol, I think that was one of the things the military really did well at the USDB at Ft Leavenworth. As the inmates approached release, they were reintroduced to the world in stages until finally they were staying in a regular barracks environment without walls or wire. In other words, the type of military environment they would have had before being incarcerated.
The officer inmates weren't so lucky. They were segregated from the rest of the population and weren't allowed to work, etc.
My knowledge of the DB is basically from what I picked-up in a couple of visits and in talking with the AF guards who worked there.

Dark Lord, Palin had several positions on national issues. She supported the surge, yes? She tried to explain how extracting oil from Alaska would not increase global warming. She was in favor of missile defense and had serious problems over the trillion plus per year will will start to owe on our national debt. I could go on, but her message was lost in the attacks on her by Democrats. And those attacks were often below the preverbial belt. Democrats were SO scared of her they lost their shit.
Warren, Biden was wrong no matter how you spin it and if you read AP today, MANY Iraqis are worried about the US leaving.
Now what will Obama do today? Will he support the ex-President of Honduras aover the Supreme COurt, Congress and military of Honduras? Will he say anthing about the clerics in Iran who today called the Iranian election a farce? This ought to show us what Obama's understanding of real Constitutional process, shouldn't it? (see my link above about what Chavez is doing to free speech in his country).
And while we all talk endlessly about MJ, note that Egypt gave a green light to Israeli subs heading towards Iran and now this from the Saudis: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article6638568.ece
It is amazing how misdirected and confused media is right now. Few even dare to speak about the crushing national debt, rising unemployment and the fact that almost 60% of Americans see no improvement of the economy.
So let's talk about Palin and MJ. Don't cry when shocking headlines appear.

Can't blame Obama about how badly media sucks. It is amazing isn't it? First it ignores the interest on our debt and watch as it cries out a month from now at a trillion plus per year servicing this administration's new debt. It won't touch what Chavez is doing with free speech nor even discusses the shocking alliance between Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel. Not a word about the EU's complete abdication of real backbone in suspending trade with Iran. History (not written by media) will show the complete failure of Western media in being truthful, wise or balanced.
Sending it soon Tony......

Palin wanted to give her Lt Gov a running start while she remakes herself to either run for Senator or the President in 2012. I think the former. She was already hinting at this when she said the oil bill would be her lasting legacy in Alaska, but the media was asleep as usual.
Media ought to be careful here. Look how they screwed up regarding Stevens. Was that a witch hunt that ended up in false charges and a complete ethical embarrassment for the Justice Department? Imagine Republicans doing that to some Democratic Senator like Durbin or Schumer. Heads would roll, yes?

I see a lot of commentary on how Michael Jackson broke down musical race barriers because of getting on MTV...which to someone my age seems a bit of a stretch given Belafonte and the Supremes earlier acceptance...not to mention that Walter Yetnikoff was running CBS records...but never mind...
What I haven't seen is much talk of the barriers Steve McNair helped break in football. When he wanted to be a quarterback, people discouraged him, angling for him to be a defensive back. But he toughed it out and was a great quarterback.
I saw a similar thing happen with a friend of my son's from high school...in fact, he was quarterback when my son was just a freshman and hoping to play center. This player gave him his shot and they worked well together. But when Mose went to college, they immediately put in in the backfield. I always thought -- as did a lot of people -- that Mose could have been a great quarterback...but no support at the college level for him to do so. (That would have been 1989 or so....)
So hat tip to Steve, and RIP.

patsi, your "breaking down barriers" comment on msm ignoring belafonte, supreme's etc. prior contributions was pretty much what i think the dawg was trying to say in south carolina about jesse jackson and how the msm seemed to be dissing/forgetting jesse's victories in favor of the new kid on the block. too bad it backfired on him when imo he was just trying to recognize an old friend's accomplishments.

I think you're right, pat....I never took those comments to be racist. Anymore than any discussion of how important people like the Supremes were to blacks crossing into mainstream pop. I think that Aretha, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke -- so many artists played major roles in white audiences turning on to black artists.
Of course the MJ thing is spinning along out of control now. Madonna already has a MJ impersonator on tour with her. Supposed to be a tribute, but he ain't even in the ground yet.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Long dependent on well water and supplies sent hundreds of miles by canal from the Colorado River, this desert city will soon harvest some of its 12 inches of annual rainfall to help bolster its water resources.

Patsi, here's the scoop on MJ and MTV. When MTV started they basically only played videos by white artists. MJ's record company basically said, "You play MJ's videos or else!" So, MTV relented and started playing MJ's videos. He was the first black artist to have his videos played by MTV. That paved the way for other black artists to get their videos played on MTV. Of course, MTV no longer plays music videos now.

MTV was a very special case. The music videos were so white you could go snow blind. Earlier black performers got on the variety shows and on Bandstand once it stopped being all white dancers.
Country never really did get on MTV until some of the Garth videos. Now of course the music video seems to have died unless you pay for them to download and some that run free or pirated on You Tube.

I know it's mean of me, but I hate these displays of hysterical devotion. It really makes me worry about some people's sanity. It's kind of a sliding scale with me. Are you a close relative? Were you a friend of many years? Are you a close acquaintance of a relative or friend or did you have business dealings requiring respectful attendance? If none of those things are true, just wish those folks well and go away.
The non stop blathers, wailing, general breast beating, and gossip mongering is just creepy. Sammy Davis, Jr. was and still is my absolute favorite performer for decades. When he died I honestly teared up for a few minutes even though we had never met. That was it other than buying the whole retrospective CD collection. That's enough for goodness sake. If this crud goes past Tues, I'm going on Twitter and ask if we are waiting for the ressurection or is he still dead?

I know, Patsi. There have been others before MJ, who haven't received or never received the credit they deserved. Little Richard, Marvin Gaye as well as many others. Didn't read the article. Did they mention that Tucson gets all 12 inches on two days? Most magnificent lightening storm I ever saw was in Tucson. Heat lightening up in the mountains around the town everywhere you looked there was a crown of fire and thunder echoing in the valley so loud that the houses literally shook, then it all boiled over in one massive downpour.

This story is so all over the place, it's constantly contradicting itself. It'll be interesting to see how it actually unfolds.... proving once again you don't have to leave msm to get your gossip. MSM, the new tabloid. I also say she'll never admit it, even if she isn't running for president (or vp again). All that money for all those appearances and that book depends on keeping that mystery alive.
"Palin indicated on a social networking site that she would take on a larger, national role, citing a "higher calling" to unite the country along conservative lines.
"I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint," the former Republican vice presidential candidate wrote in a posting on her Facebook page. Palin's spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, confirmed Palin wrote the entry.
...... Palin wasn't in any criminal legal jeopardy.
"There is absolutely no truth to those rumors that we're investigating her or getting ready to indict her," Special Agent Eric Gonzalez, the bureau's Alaska spokesman, said.http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090705/D9988SCG0.html

I didn't want to comment on the Palin bs: I think that it has all been premature, and like almost anything else wrong in the beginning until the truth comes out. If she was in trouble with the law in her own state; what better place to defend her self than from the powerful office of the Governor's?
No one is talking about the important news that Biden made today on the George S. show: He said that "he admited-that they miscalculated the economy"- how bad it was. WTF. did he think? They did not miscalculate how bad it was for the banks, the Ins. corps and others, hell he went and got them $ so they can buy some more jets to party with.
He also said: "In the next 100 days it will get better, and that every thing is going along fine". How may more people out in the street are there going to be in the next 100 day's? They are sounding, and acting more like Cheney/Bush more and more.
I might not agree with everything that Ronn Paul says, but he is not a lier.

Solar, I saw that thing about Biden earlier online, but didn't know what to make of it. Biden says so many strange things.
"We misread how bad the economy was, but we are now only about 120 days into the recovery package," he said. "The truth of the matter was, no one anticipated, no one expected that that recovery package would in fact be in a position at this point of having to distribute the bulk of money.
I pressed the vice president, who is also leading the administration's middle-class task force, on whether he'd rule out a second stimulus package.
"So, no second stimulus?" I asked.
"No, I didn't say that," Biden said, "I think it's premature to make that judgment. This was set up to spend out over 18 months. There are going to be major programs that are going to take effect in September, $7.5 billion for broadband, new money for high-speed rail, the implementation of the grid -- the new electric grid. And so this is just starting, the pace of the ball is now going to increase."
http://blogs.abcnews.com/george/2009/07/biden-we-misread-the-economy-.html
Solar, I linked that story about Sarah Palin because I continue to be surprised at the number of stories, all contradictory, that hit the news before they ever get to the truth. I don't know what to believe anymore.

M. Jackson was a great entertainer; one of the best ever. That said he was a jerk: He did not find out who he was, how he came to be M. J. In some people (most) that is forgiven-given the busy lives that they have, and just working to get food on the table.
He was in the position to understand himself, and chose not too. He did do a lot of charitable things. Just thing what he could have accomplished if he tried even half of the time: People like Paul Newman, Robert R. Bon Jovi, other that keep doing what they can with all of their fame and $, He lived like a kid, and died like one to me. His talent will be missed, but what he could have done even more imo.

Don't believe anything until the truth comes out. There is alway's something other than what comes out at first from the politicians no? What if it is all true about her-what they are saying now; its over for her, and no more of a concern for the D's, other than bs politic inquirer gossip.
lots to be concerned about for me other than her positioning herself for whatever is next. I will find out , and still won't give a damn, nothing today , or tommorw can change that for me about her.

Chole,
I said that about Palin, as a politician: As a women, a person that got to be Governor, she has my respect. It doesn't matter that she wasn't prepared to run for office; she has the courage to do it, that must not have been easy. I think now that they are trying to put her aside, that she is even more courageous if she sticks around, just to poke them in the eye. That's it for me, I don't care what she does, won't talk about her any more, unless its about a broader concept, of what Patsi is trying to tell everyone.
I keep telling the Mexican people that work for me, or that I meet that they should not take each other for granted; that they are their own worst enemy, they cannibalize themselves, just like some women do when it comes to other women. There is a lot of Anthropological information about this-that I posted int the past.
If there is one good thing about these wars: It is that women are now just as important in them as the men. this will move them a little further along. I don't agree that-women are sliding back, but it is getting to be just as hard to not lose ground, or gain any.
In our family-we are going to have our first women doctor in a cpl of years. Hell the first doctor in our family-period. We have 3 nurses now. The women in my family won't take a step backwards, that I can tell you!!

Nice Solar. You all must be so proud.
I agree with you, btw. I've heard a lot of people say it's going backwards, but I don't think it is either. It may be slowing down, but I don't see us losing the ground we've gained. Maybe some of the younger women don't seem to care as much, because they take it for granted. That can be a good thing, if they are 'assuming' they are equal, and expecting to do the same things and go into the same careers as a male. Maybe they don't see themselves as having to fight for equality, but see themselves as already being equal.

Chlo,
I think that women like our Patsi, and our Carol, are women to be proud off. What I think that Patsi is saying is that, if women don't understand, or that they don't want to understand when a member of their own gender is taken out, taken down a peg or two by other women, then they have lost ground in understanding their own gender, and when they are an impairment to themselves. But If I don't have t hat right. I apologize.
I guess that's it from me. too much huh?

Solar, they Jim Brown bashed Tiger Woods for the same thing last week. That's not their responsibility as an entertainer or an athelete to do charitable things etc...Sure, it's nice if they do. What has Bon Jovi done besides make people aware of New Jersey? . If you wanna talk about entertainers who have done a lot with their fame and their fortune, you should talk about Bono of U2. Not sure where thinking MJ was a jerk comes in, but that's your opinion. I do believe Michael Jackson covered some of the expense of David Ruffin's funeral. The other thing I've learned about some entertainers and atheletes is that many of them do charitable things that are not talked about in the media.

Solar, I think you're right and that's one of the things Patsi means. But I also think some of what she's saying is about the men using demeaning terms in describing women and little girls growing up hearing those terms and it affecting their self image. Patsi says it best though, and I agree with it all.

My bad chloe.
I don't think the Huck was so bad about asserting religion into politics. Of course it was an issue because of his background - and the media would have brought it up over and over again even if Huck never metioned the word "God"...
But he did not inject religion into every issue. He just seemed to be more intelligent than most in the Republican field of candidates this past election. He actually sounded like he knew what he was talking about instead of just rattling off talking points.
(Same with Ron Paul who was more eccentric than his ideas.)

Tiger woods has been living hes life as an adult. Not as a 50 year old kid. what kind of a mental mess do think that M. J, made out of his kids. There is going to be some work to do-before they are "normal" what ever that is. Bono is the guy that I was trying to think about, thanks.
......Don't think that as an entertainer, or an athlete any one has any indispensability to do be ulteristic, I do think that they do as a human being that is in the position to help those suffering is tho. there are many common people that do this: M J was in a position to do great things, he fumbled the ball, as do most athletes do also, given the chance to make a diff.

Tiger woods.
A couple was on their honeymoon, lying in bed, about ready to consummate their marriage, when the new bride says to the husband, "I have a confession to make, I'm not a virgin." The husband replies, "That's no big thing in this day and age."
The wife continues, "Yeah, I've been with one other guy." "Oh yeah? Who was the guy?" "Tiger Woods." "Tiger Woods the golfer?" "Yeah." "Well he's rich, famous and handsome. I can see why you went to bed with him."
The husband and wife then make passionate love. When they get done, the husband gets up and walks to the telephone. "What are you doing?" says the wife. The husband says, "I'm hungry. I was going to call room service and get some food." "Tiger wouldn't do that." "Oh yeah? What would Tiger do?" "He'd come back to bed and do it a second time." The husband puts down the phone and goes back to bed to make love with his wife a second time.
When they finish, he gets up and goes over to the phone. "What are you doing?" She says. The husband says, "I'm still hungry so I was going to get room service to get some food." "Tiger wouldn't do that." "Oh yeah? What would Tiger do?" "He'd come back to bed and do it one more time." The guy slams down the phone and goes back to bed and makes love to his wife one more time.
When they finish he's tired and beat. He drags himself over to the phone and starts to dial. The wife asks, "Are you calling room service?" "No! I'm calling Tiger Woods to find out what's par for this hole!"

Biden? DId someone mention Biden?
"July 5, 2009, 5:51 PM (GMT+02:00)
US Vice President Joseph Biden: Israel must determine for itself.
In an interview with ABC's George Stephanoupolos taped Saturday, vice president Joseph Biden said in answer to a question: "Look, Israel can determine for itself — it's a sovereign nation — what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else." Whether we agree or not? The interviewer asked. "Whether we agree or not," said the vice president.
This was the first time a senior Obama administration official left Israeli the military option against Iran's nuclear sites. DEBKAfile's Washington sources note that the vice president has the reputation for fast draws which are sometimes later modified by "clarifications." If this time Biden's statement was coordinated with the president, it would mean that the administration has withdrawn its veto against Israel's resort to military action to curtail Iran's drive for a bomb before diplomacy has been fully tested.
He went on to say: "They're entitled to do that. Any sovereign nation is entitled to do that. But there is no pressure from any nation that's going to alter our behavior as to how to proceed. What we believe is in the national interest of the United States, which we, coincidentally, believe is also in the interest of Israel and the whole world.
"And so there are separate issues. If the Netanyahu government decides to take a course of action different than the one being pursued now, that is their sovereign right to do that. That is not our choice. "
Stephanopoulos persisted: But just to be clear here, if the Israelis decide Iran is an existential threat, they have to take out the nuclear program, militarily the United States will not stand in the way?
Biden: "Look, we cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do.
Interviewer: You say we can't dictate, but we can, if we choose to, deny over-flight rights here in Iraq. We can stand in the way of a military strike.
Biden: "I'm not going to speculate, George, on those issues, other than to say Israel has a right to determine what's in its interests, and we have a right and we will determine what's in our interests."
DEBKAfile's intelligence sources: The last three days from Friday, June 3, have seen a spate of reports all pointing in one direction: Israel's air and sea capabilities for dealing with Iran and its military nuclear program. US vice president Biden's statement, unless it is withdrawn, looks like the Obama administration's seal on a possible Israeli attack for pre-empting a nuclear-armed Iran. "Israel can determine for itself whether or not to bomb Iran's nuclear program," he said.
Until now, administration officials referred a potential Israeli bombardment of Iran as a disaster whose consequences were impossible to predict.
Now the ball is squarely in Binyamin Netanyahu's court, whether because Washington hopes Israel will pull the Iranian chestnut out of the fire, or to call Israel's bluff. Netanyahu and defense minister Ehud Barak are now free of America restraints for backing up their statements about the need to pre-empt a nuclear-armed Iran before the Islamic Republic poses an existential threat to Israel.
Asked if Americans would again put their lives on the line again if violence flares back up in Iraq, Biden flatly said "no."
The ABC correspondent notes that in the interview Biden used the phrases "sovereign nation" six times in the interview, once in reference to Iraq, once to the US and three times in referring to Israel." Debka
Seems that equals five times in my book, but that aside, an astonishing weekend in the Middle East. As Israel subs roll out into theGulf and Egypt and Saudis seem to have had enough of Iran, Ahmadinejad wants to hold public talks with Obama. Despite the Press's obit on the green revolution, more clerics openly defy the radical regime as thousands are arrested. This same Press ignores the inability of Italy or Germany to put any teeth in sanctions or the control of Palestinian militants by Iran, rather letting the US and Israel set up a military option to somehow contain the regime's persuit of nukes. Well, was there any response to NK?
So was Biden talking out of his ass again? Perhaps Hillary could clarify.
The most interesting Biden line was on Iraq. So Biden thinks it wise to tell the world we will not intervene should Iran or AQ be sucessful in starting violence again? Of course this goes against what Obama has said repeatedly.
Yep, an amazing weekend of news, if you weren't watching the customary organs of info.....

Biden: Israel ‘Entitled’ to Attack Iran
US Won't Stand in the Way of a Military Strike
In an interview today on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulus,” Vice President Joe Biden said it was up to the Israeli government to decide if Iran constituted an existential threat and that the nation was “entitled” to launch a military strike against the nation if they wanted to.
Biden said the United States would make no effort to dissuade the Israeli government from launching an attack on Iran, but was deliberately evasive on the question of whether the US would provide Israel with access to Iraqi airspace for the strike, saying he didn’t want to “speculate.”
Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran over the past several years, and the right-wing coalition government elected earlier this year won largely on a platform of taking an even more hawkish position toward Iran than previous administraitons had.
At issue is Iran’s civilian nuclear program, which despite a lack of evidence Israel claims is being used to construct a nuclear weapon in violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Israel is itself not a signatory of the NPT, and has a large, undeclared nuclear arsenal.
US defense officials, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, have warned that a military attack on Iran, whether by the US or Israel, would be blamed on the US and would create a “disastrous backlash.”
Max,
A few weeks ago, when Netanyahu was in D. C. to see Obama: You angrily told me that I was crazy for saying that the fix was in.

"Palin and Her Enemies"
"Male commentators will attack you for parading your children. Female commentators will attack you for not staying home with them. You’ll be sneered at for how you talk and how many colleges you attended. You’ll endure gibes about your “slutty” looks and your “white trash concupiscence,” while a prominent female academic declares that your “greatest hypocrisy” is the “pretense” that you’re a woman. And eight months after the election, the professionals who pressed you into the service of a gimmicky, dreary, idea-free campaign will still be blaming you for their defeat."
All of this had something to do with ordinary partisan politics. But it had everything to do with Palin’s gender and her social class.

"HELP Is on the Way"
"So fundamental health reform — reform that would eliminate the insecurity about health coverage that looms so large for many Americans — is now within reach. The “centrist” senators, most of them Democrats, who have been holding up reform can no longer claim either that universal coverage is unaffordable or that it won’t work.
The only question now is whether a combination of persuasion from President Obama, pressure from health reform activists and, one hopes, senators’ own consciences will get the centrists on board — or at least get them to vote for cloture, so that diehard opponents of reform can’t block it with a filibuster."

Swings in Oil Price Hobble Forecasting
By JAD MOUAWAD
The extreme volatility that has gripped oil markets for the last 18 months has shown no signs of slowing down, with oil prices more than doubling since the beginning of the year despite an exceptionally weak economy.
The instability of oil and gas prices is puzzling government officials and policy analysts, who fear it could jeopardize a global recovery. It is also hobbling businesses and consumers, who are already facing the effects of a stinging recession, as they try in vain to guess where prices will be a year from now — or even next month.

Lessee, MJ, Palin - heard it all I think.
KC, I'm really not sure what is so puzzling about volatility in the oil market when speculationis proceeding apace during a recession. It (speculation) has changed the customary supply/demand forces that have existed inthe oil markets for decades. I could be wrong about this, but it is my impression that speculation on oil futures swung into high gear in the 70s during the oil crisis, and since then oil has become just another commodity to bet on - with the exception in oil being that there are really only a handful of players who have the ability to manipulate the market so that they can make tons of money on the swings in it. Of course, my involvment in the market is limited to swiping a credit card at the pump and filling the car up when the screen tells me to select a grade, so I could be wrong.

This is at the heart of what sets the teeth on edge of so many women who lived through all of the initial battles to obtain rights for women. Somewhere along the line the word "feminist" has become synonymous with strident and bitchy demanding special consideration rather than just normal human rights.

On some of the women who are adding their influence to Obama's administration.
A much needed contrast to the sighing, eye-batting Mika version of women that populates cable tv in particular.

The beast also had the great article about how the Republican Right and a racist base are tied together

jamie, as a son of the souh, I can attest from personal experience that the racists were Democrats until the Kennedies and Johnson hit the scene in the top positions of power in DC. Oh, and they were also churchgoers, pillars of their communities, rednecks, morons and all the other things your (not you personally) impressions of the Kluckers include. IMHO, if there is a god and there is a judgment day, and there is a heaven and hell anything like the Biblical account, they will get to party with that Satan feller for the rest of eternity.
