Polls show that the political honeymoon is over for Barack Obama, and his health overhaul plan missed the occasion.
With no vote on a health bill expected before Capitol Hill's August vacation, it looks as though the President will have to try and get it passed without the high approval ratings that traditionally come in the early months of a president's first term.
- Presidential Ratings Slip (Rasmussen, 7/27)
- Obama Job Approval Trends Downward in Second Quarter (Gallup, 7/20)

I watched Senator Bingaman on MSNBC's The Ed Show (which is much better than his radio personna) and was gravely disappointed to hear him state...some sort of 'non-private co-op' option may survive the health finance committee. Geez, Bingaman looked like a whipped puppy and I was expecting the same strength from his op-ed on health care he wrote....nothing. Dems have shot themselves in the foot and Rohm wanted to get the moderates elected...now we has to live (actually die) with this.

From the Gallup link: ". . .all of these have still exceeded the historical average of 55% job approval for presidents from Truman through George W. Bush. On this basis, it can be argued that he is still in the honeymoon phase of his presidency."

Blondie:
It might not be fun dealing with moderate/conservative Democrats - but they are a heck of a lot easier to deal with than Republicans - most of whom are going to vote "No" - regardless of what is in the bill.

We moan about the Military/Industrial complex. Eisenhower's granddaughter on Bill Maher said that it originally read Military/Industrial/Congressional complex. Maybe we should now add Corporate media to the whole nefarious conglomerate.
For 60 years, the American people have wanted universal healthcare. For 60 years this has been lied about by a combination of Insurance companies, lobbyists, and media.
Let's face it: Government of by and for the people is a complete illusion foisted on us every July 4. It is government of by and for the privileged who don't particularly give a damn about the general population except at election time.

Should you ever care to delve into America's history with eugenics, the Image Archive on the American Eugenics Movement is a handy thing indeed. It's hard to believe eugenics was as popular here as it in fact was without seeing the visual evidence. The images here include Fitter Family contests, where white Americans competed at state fairs--much like cattle--to determine who had the best breeding. (Make sure to check out this traveling exhibit.) Also, lots of documents and flyers linking criminality to immigrants and heredity. (Oh, the irony of using the swastika to indicate the racial inferiority of Germans!) The interface is pretty clunky but it's worth pecking around.

Eugenics is a fascinating subject. As with breeding any group of mammals, the criteria you use as to what is a "desireable" attribute and what you decide to do about the "undesireables" makes all the difference. That and who gets to decide.
Probably best to leave people to their own devices. Texas got a lot of good looking people because newly rich oil money was able to purchase long legged New York show girls. :-)

The Eugenics movement also paralled the birth control movement and over-lapped until the women realized the Eugenics men were 'nuts.' However, reproductive biology was a beginning topic in medicine and women wanted the power and choice in reproduction. It reminds me we have not really changed that much as a society...today we have creationists running several governments throughout the land...denying science and our simian past...not treading past 6,000 years.

Speaking of Eugenics, Ginsburg had a few comments (nyt);
JUSTICE GINSBURG: Yes, the ruling about that surprised me. [Harris v. McRae — in 1980 the court upheld the Hyde Amendment, which forbids the use of Medicaid for abortions.] Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.

We are coming to a point where experts will soon be able to perfectly read a genetic chart and "designer" babies no longer impractical.
People already do it on their own as much as possible by guess and grab for the most successful, intelligent, or best looking. What happens when you can order the qualities likely to produce those attributes?

Then you have groups marrying within groups so that the already privileged keep it all in the family. :-) Have to sideline the idiot nephew and import some "rougher" genes into the party (i.e. all that european nobility marrying rich American heirs and heiresses).
One of my favorite books is "Time Enough For Love" by Robert Heinlein. It had it's roots in a novelette, "Methuselah's Children" where there was a fund to support intermarriage between people whose four grandparents had lived to at least 100. The two stories bring up all sorts of ethical situations i.e If you are several hundred years old and have gone through several marital partners and now find you are involved with your own child (ie a young whippersnapper of only a couple of hundred years old) with an absolutely clean genetic chart, is it incest?
It is all done in an entertaining fashion, but your brain can chase the morality around for decades.

Craig, Just seems to me Obama's popularity will fluctuate with the economy. Probably the main reason his popularity has taken a dive (here, not overseas I don't think) is because we expected too much, since he was able to make so many overly hopeful that he could (and would) deliver on all those promises he made. But things change (and everything's relative) so who knows.

I am sure you are right Warren. Your post said so much.
The little things we discuss here, at home, where ever, are always about bigger things (imo). After about a day and a half into the discussion, I realized we were essentially all talking about something different. It's hard to do that, and not run into conflicts. And of course, it ran into misunderstandings, because we're back to this very difficult forum, where we can't express everything we're thinking in a few paragraphs. I usually try to stay off the controversial subjects, but this time I felt there was too much of an imbalance. (Just from my point of view, that is).
Anyway, you said it all in your post. End of story (I hope).

Powerful Ideas: Chicken Feathers Could Store Fuel
" ............ Now Wool and his colleagues say that superheated chicken feather fibers could hold vast amounts of hydrogen. They first looked at chicken feathers because they are extraordinarily cheap — the United States alone generates some 6 billion pounds of the feathers per year.
"It actually costs the poultry industry money to get rid of these feathers, so they're basically for free," Wool told LiveScience. "

"The Comet was the world's first passenger jet . It had a fatal design flaw that made it the world's first passenger jet to crash ."
I was aboard an airplane taxiing around Miami International. Looked out the window and there it was, a Comet parked in an isolated corner of the airfield. It was, maybe, 1974.
It looked just as if the crew locked the door and left it when the planes were grounded a couple of decades earlier.
I don't recall them ever being used by a domestic carrier. Instead, the Viscount, a turbo prop, was heavily marketed until the first 707s started appearing.
One of the pitches for the Viscount was that you could place one of your cigarettes, Pall Mall, I'm sure, on end on the table in front of you and it wouldn't be tipped over because of the vibration always present on piston airliners.
My airplane of choice was the Constellation Super-G. Also known as the triple-tailed dragon. Great big picture windows, adjustable footrests, and really comfortable seats. Most everyone dressed as if they were going to an 'event'.

patd...after listening to the 911 tape, it is clear the cops did not have much to do that day. It is so pitiful that real crime is ignored and this has become such a time waster.
I had written here in June when I was detained by the border patrol for 45 minutes...without my purse, phone, car, etc. and made to wait in a metal room while the dog and agents went over my car. I knew I was innocent and could have created a scene by screaming, etc., but I knew these guys had a job to do. Of course, they had made a mistake, but I remembered a few days before the cops tasered a 70 year old grandma for mouthing off.... Yep, it was a mistake that could have really cost me a lot more. The jails are filled with innocents who got pissed-off by false arrest.
Gates should have know better, but it is totally unnerving to be approached when you are at home. Since the Patriot Act, why push the police? I saw similar incidents at the airports after 9/11...airport cops harrassing drunks on the concourse instead of terroists...because they know they are "safe" targets to harass. Gosh, the real criminals are hard to deal with!

I don't know whether Crowley did anything as a result of any racist feelings he has, but I do think what he did was stupid, considering the state of the law of disorderly conduct in MA, which is what police in MA are supposed to enforce, right? That aside, there certainly have been fundamental changes re: race in the US since Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, AL - I can't speak for Montgomery, or for Boston for that matter, but Birmingham (Bull Conner, police dogs, fire hoses, etc.) has had at least 2 AA mayors and numerous City Councilmembers and other city and county (Jefferson) officials over the past 30 or so years.

pogo, since an earlier article quotes her lawyer clarifying that she tentatively id'd the b&e as hispanic, sounds like ms whalen the 911 caller is worried she may be sued.
there was also another passer-by witness who's unnamed so far. wonder if she too has hired a lawyer.
Posted by: patd
| July 27, 2009 2:40 PM
pat, I wondered why she felt she needed a lawyer - in fact it struck me as very strange because frankly I don't believe she could be sued for making a 911 call under any circumstances that exist in this case. After all, Gates WAS breaking into his own house and she apparently did not know it was him or his house.

OK, this is very confusing.
http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/20090727gates_case_shocker_woman_who_called_cambridge_police_says_she_never_referred_to_intruders_as_black/
based on the two Boston Herald articles:
- Whalen never said that the guys breaking in were black. She saw the incident from her office window 100 yds from Gates' house.
- Whalen told the dispatcher that one looked kind of Hispanic (does this jibe with being too far away to see what race they were?)
- Whalen called in at the urging of another woman who saw them breaking in?
- "In the police report, Crowley says Whalen told him she saw “two black males with backpacks on the porch.” People who have come to the defense of the veteran cop have noted that Crowley did not presume the “suspect” was black, but rather was told so."
This could all be a result of anxious reporting, but I can't reconcile it all.
I guess this could be a result of poor reporting, but I can't reconcile what's in the two BH articles and the excerpts above.

As far as I know Crowley never spoke to Whalen. At one point he asked the dispatcher to tell the 911 caller to come to the door and was told that it wasn't her home. The confusion seems to be what Crowley was told by the dispatcher and the police report written after the fact supposedly combines the whalen call and the statements from others unnamed.
Lots of room for error between the call, the dispatcher, the policeman, the report, and the reporter writing up the whole brouhaha.

"What 1994 Can Tell Democrats on Health Care"
"The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, will decide in the next few days whether to bring a bill to the floor before the August recess.
Passage would add to a sense of momentum, yet there is a danger in appearing to rush through a measure that affects one-sixth of the U.S. economy, and she could lose up to three dozen of her Democrats in a floor vote. (The White House would prefer that the House stay in session a week beyond the July 31 summer recess date. The problem is that many members, with younger children, have family plans before school starts in mid- August.)
For all the difficulties, the contours of any ultimate measure are clear.
The so-called public option — some form of government-run plan to compete with private insurers — will only be a fallback in the event private insurers fail to meet the goals, and will probably be in the form of health cooperatives or another mechanism. Liberals simply will have to accept that they lack the votes for a full-fledged public option."

Gillibrand’s fast-track proposal for halting DADT, an amendment to the Military Reauthorization Act that would have ordered the Defense secretary to stop investigating gay service members, was never introduced. Even with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressing his support, Gillibrand couldn’t gather the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster, according to a spokesperson."

------------------------------------------------------------------
Both the Lockheed Constellations and the Boeing Stratocruisers were very luxurious. They both had porcelain dinnerware (specially designed for the particular type of airplane) crystal, and cloth napkins. The place settings were fit for men in suits and ties, and women in white gloves and pillbox hats with veils.
My favorite was the Stratocruiser. While it was much slower than the Connie, it was even more comfortable. I remember one outfitted as a Pullman car. It was the mid '50s, and we were able to sleep in bunks all the way to Hawaii.
I never got to fly on a Comet, dammit. But, I did fly on a very quiet (for that era) Sud Oest Caravele. Good heavens those Caraveles had beautiful lines. The Vickers Viscount, Lockheed Electra, and original DC9s were all ear-killers. Hideous.

First I want to say that I was guilty of some profiling myself by thinking the caller was the worst offender. See how easy that is? I knew I didn't know anything about her but guessed she was a bigot; I absolutely knew better but got pulled in to calm the roiling waters around Carol, and lost my head. I REALLY hope I never do that again.
I liked the part where Jonathon Capeheart said it might be a generational thing, also. The older generation has had a lot of experiences that the younger ones haven't. Tweety asked if he had ever been pulled over by a cop or even stopped by one - to which Capeheart said he hadn't.
Rez, thanks for the beautiful pix! I took an exercise class once ahoe instructer used tapes of whale songs and they were magnificent all by themselves. Most of them today have orchestral accompaniments.
I guess some of you think I'm a blue dog cuz I don't want to rush a cyclonic change to the health care situation. But I don't think I am - on that little comparison quiz we took, I was in closest agreement with Ginsberg. I want something done now for sure but will probably not be upset if it isn't all done at once.
Besides, I'm an independent for exactly this reason. The Dem party has sheltered a lot of weasels in the past, and I want no part of it. It screws the people and knows it will be forgiven in time - it takes people for granted.

as a newcomer, i don't wish to post long paragraphs...

Welcome, it is a hard headed opinionated bunch, but not a bad place to hang out.
Right now it is time for Obama to grow a set. everyone is testing him to see if he can handle his power.

Crowman,
First welcome to the group.
Presidents have been losing this one for the long run for 60 years now. How far in the future should be we plan to continue letting Insurance companies and medicine for profit gouge the American public into being one of the lowest in health statistics of the developed nations?

KGC
There are times when Obama reminds me of the ad in the back of comic books. The one where the skinny kid get sand kicked in his face by the bully. Obama is the skinny kid and somedays it seems like everyone thinks they can kick sand in his face.

You'll like it here. It is a continuous conversation about virtually everything from the posted issue to owls and solar ovens cooking blue corn. :-)
