While the political world scratches its collective head over Sarah Palin's unexpected plans to resign the governorship of Alaska, consider her direct threats of a defamation lawsuit against several news media organizations contained in an Independence Day open letter from her attorney.
By quitting public office perhaps Palin hopes to argue that she would no longer bear the higher standard of proof that a public figure bears in pursuing a lawsuit against alleged defamers. Legal experts might deem that to be a dubious claim for such a famous person, but who knows what lurks in Palin's mind.
After a lengthy point-by-point refutation of what lawyer Thomas Van Flein calls "false and defamatory allegations" by "unscrupulous people" he ends the letter by claiming that "continuing to publish these falsehoods of criminal activity is reckless, done without any regard for the truth, and is actionable."
Actionable? In law talk, folks, that means lawsuit.
News media targeted in the letter include the New York Times, the Washington Post, MSNBC, the Huffington Post and the Village Voice.

Welcome to Seward's Folly. LoL
In my experience, when people start threatening to sue, it's often because they are anxious to cover something up, and they're using the threat to intimidate their critics.
By the way, in addition to the Seward's Folly Award, Governor Palin also qualifies for my irony award of the day. At the Republican National Convention, she observed:
"In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those ... who use their careers to promote change."
Or not.
After hearing the governor's announcement, the song that keeps running through MY head is Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover."
"The problem is all inside your head," she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave ....
You just slip out the back ....
Make a new plan ....
You don't need to be coy ....
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus ....
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key ....
and get yourself free ....

Oh, and not to rain on Thomas Van Flein's parade or anything, but the "false and defamatory allegations" about the real reasons for Palin's resignation that he mentions can not be proved or disproved by facts about the building of the Wasilla Sports complex - those are matters of opinion and speculation about why she resigned and whter there maybe criminal investigations, well founded or not, into facts surrounding its construction, etc. If the investigations occur, whether they lead to indictments or not, that would be sufficient (even if Palin were not a celebrity) to defeat any such lawsuit. As they say, stay tuned.
As for me, I think she's just doing it for the money. And even if Lisa Murkowski is upset because Palin is leaving Alaskans high and dry 17 months before her first term ends, opportunities to cash in don't come along every day, and passin gfor now is seldom a viable option. But I hope she isn't counting on me to buy her book - I'll read about it at Huffpo.

I think she's broke and has to pay legal bills. Supposedly, she's had huge media offers and a way out of debt.
Then again, maybe the GOP is paying her to keep all of us salivating over her doings while they maneuver Mitt, New, Huck and a bunch of other creeps into a more reasonable sounding position.

Pogo, I'm well aware that the Dixiecrats bailed out of the Democrats and into the Republicans and they have been stuck with them ever since.
Unfortunately, the Conservatives in the 1970s started building that Southern coalition (wherever they were located) into the base of the party. They were nurtured up through all the lower offices, until they finally took over the party and started shoving out the tradition fiscal conservatives out of the way until now they are left with nothing but this 21% of the total population as almost the whole of the party.

Just as a side comment. Bill Bennett was on CNN pontificating about all things Palin and threw away one of those comments that sound really cute on the surface about the Russian architecture on the screen in connection with the President's visit.
"Just look at the beautiful architecture, beautiful, pre Communist. Have you ever seen any good Communist architecture?"
You're sitting there nodding along as he burbles and then think that all it took was a slave labor class and concentration of all the wealth in less than 1% of the population.
Of course not all that much changed after the revolution except that the ruling class had a name change and everybody else got reduced to a slightly better level of poverty.

The current Republican leadership is a joke and they have no bench. If Palin can make a bunch of money (some of the estimates are as high as 20 mil) she can leverage herself as the leader. At the moment her only opposition is Mitt "who let the dogs out " Romney.

I wonder how the West and Iran will react to this news. Watch Patsi and you'll have more to be angry about...
If McKinney can sue Israel for kidnapping, then perhaps Palin has a chance. It is SO funny how this woman has you all on the edge of your seats.
Weekend mistake? Honduras should have let Z land and then arrested him. The only thing Chavez can latch onto is that Z was told to leave rather than ne arrested. Okay, so let him return and arrest him. It was so sad to watch media try to make the small crowd waiting for Z to look huge and then lament the NAZI tactics that lead to a death. Compare this to the reporting over Iran where people are dying today. Media reaches new lows and yet the MJ show will go on all week despite polls indicating more the 3/4 of Americans think it is far too much. Yeah, MJ was right up there with MLK and X. Great journalism.
Still, little mention of Bidens Weekend comments, ISrael subs moving towards Iran with a green light form Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the new let's talk show from Ahmadinejad as an historical rupture unfolds among the Mullahs.

And as to HuffPo, I know what I get there - being a caveat emptor sort of guy anyway - and I've also got a pretty good idea what a Palin book might "reveal" - it isn't as if she's a hold your cards close to the vest kinda gal. Palin, shamlin.........hope that she has guts to go thru with the law suits, if that is what she is doing. Should be great entertainment and make the msnbs's of the world to watch what they say.
She should include: David Litter Man, cbs, and all of the seventh inning gang bang crow.!
Meanwhile.......CQ's......Adriel Bettelheim, has a terrific article worth talking about IMHO.
Transportation Sec. Ray LaHood:
He professed some irritation with unnamed former Republican colleagues in Congress he says rushed to take credit for new federal spending in their districts, then condemned the Obama administration for running up deficits and throwing good money after bad.
“As Americans, we should be praying the president does well,” LaHood said. “If his economic plan succeeds, America will do well, our friends and neighbors will do well. There will always be other elections, but we should be hoping this plan works.”
I often said that Obama should concentrate on one or two things: One of them, and the most important one being the economy, KGC is right to keep talking about the gas prices.
This effects the people more directly ( it seems to me) than any thing else. If they can't drive to go to work, look for work , etc, etc. We will be talking about how, and why Obama's #'s tanked.
OBAMA RELEASE THE STIMULUS $ NOW!!!!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,this should be coming out of the pundits mouth at all times. Another thing is the ( TIR is right about this one) the wars, death counts: Both the Military's and the civillians, and the wounded, along with the tally's of $ spent to kill the baby's with our drones.!!!
M. J. They should have the rites before t hey take him to his final resting place at a baseball stadium. They could sell a lot of more tickets, that could be resold by scalpers, or on e-bay. Lots, and lots of $ could be made.
I will be shutting down completely for that show tomorrow.......I can just imagine the faces of J. Jackson, Sharpton, and all of the Parasites now.! Oh I forgot: Madonna can do the 7th inning show along with her new M.J. impressionist......Imagine, moon walking the bases!!
Pogo...Mr Rogers.........It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, it's beautiful day in the neighbor hood. Going to take a walk, and go fro a Max Well St. Polish Sausage, with grilled onions, mustard, peppers, and fries, wash it down with a cold bud. Lunch.

X, undoubtedly there has been some signal play going on. On one hand, where is the Saudi/Egyptian denial of Western speculation? With Biden's comment, Iraq, Suadi Arabia are open skies for Israel. You may be right as interdiction of dangerous shipping and posturing are more likely first steps, but Dophin are a nuclear wing. Consider this:
A more shocking signal to Iran is the possibility of Israel nukes. Before the Mullah's this is the last weapon Israel ever contemplated with Iran. It is a weapon of choice however between Pakistan and India. What are the defensive red lines? For example, would Israel respond to WMD counterstrikes by Iran with nukes? It would do so if Syria launched chemical strikes. More importantly, could Iranian facilities deeply protected and underground themselves become targets of neutron bombs http://www.nti.org/db/nuclear/1994/n9411479.htm which would not produce harmful fallout even at ground zero? That would likely be a hundred meters below ground. It would be false to conclude Pakistan, India, France, China and even perhaps others do not have this capability incorporated into tactical strategies. Ronald Reagan gave them up when Soviet tanks were protected against EMP.
It may be that Israel is bluffing, or sending a just signal. It may be however that Israel is beginning to deploy assets and back up Obama's end of the year deadline with some new credibility that has been sorely lacking. The world press will beat this "Israelis" concern past Iranian censors and the people there will have added reason to fear their leadership. They always knew however, they are hostages to radical clerics and I have quoted the great leader himself explain that Iran can burn if it means the glorious triumph of Islam (provided the Mullah's are their to interpret it).
The present course seems the prediction given the Sunni breaking point. Bibi will be the bad cop with Arab help and Obama the good one backed up with a dubious threat of sanctions with teeth. If Ahmadinejad wants to trash Obama, then Netanyahu can help out the President and show the regime just how alienated they have made the world. Sunnis have picked Israel over them. And they are not afraid of Mullah's.
I thought Obama could have mentioned this strange reality unfolding in the Middle East at his Press conference today. Isn't it obvious Iran and North Korea present serious threats and are working together? Doesn't China see the militant threat in their Eastern State posed by radicals? Aren't the events in Pakistan a deep concern?
There is however a reason why Obama could not ask why Russia defended Iranian facilities with air defense. Putin would remind him of the Gore agreement where by Russia was only permitted to sell technology and military weapons to former Soviet allies including Iran. And the irony of helping America supply materials to Afghanistan is not lost on the Russian public either. Obama was good in keeping repect balanced, but did not explain how proliferating air defense sytems to Iran is not worse than fearing missile defense for Europe against Iranian or "third-parties" (very important), or to the Mujhadeen in Afghanistan to drive out the commies.
I guess that would have stunned to reporters.
As to the Israelis, her is some of a strage military report. Strange because I sense some attitude desplayed in the Title of the Article...LOL, but it contains some plausible data.
"The Israelis have developed, by several accounts, low yield neutron bombs able to destroy troops with minimal damage to property.112 In 1990, during the Second Gulf War, an Israeli reserve major general recommended to America that it “use non-contaminating tactical nuclear weapons” against Iraq.113 Some have speculated that the Israelis will update their nuclear arsenal to “micronukes” and “tinynukes” which would be very useful to attack point targets and other tactical or barrier (mining) uses.114 These would be very useful for hardened deeply buried command and control facilities and for airfield destruction without exposing Israeli pilots to combat.115 Authors have made the point that Israeli professional military schools do not teach nuclear tactics and would not use them in the close quarters of Israel. Many Israeli officers have attended American military schools where they learned tactical use in crowded Europe.116"
http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/cpc-pubs/farr.htm
Ironic given Carter's dabbling with neutron bombs....and subs.......

GOP Senator booed at tea party protest
Voting for the initial federal bailout of Wall Street in 2008 made a GOP senator as welcome as a King George impersonator at a July 4th tea party this weekend.
“Texans who think government is too big and taxes are too high rallied on the lawns of the Texas Capitol and courthouses across the state on the Fourth of July, at times interrupting the remarks of Sen. John Cornyn in Austin,” the Associated Press reports.
Austin Statesman adds, “Cornyn was booed at the start and close of his remarks, which assailed actions in Washington; there were no boos while he awarded a Purple Heart to a Copperas Cove resident injured in Iraq in 2006. ‘You’re the problem,’ a crowd member hollered.”
MyFoxAustin.com reported, “As the Senator was trying to speak, many were calling him a traitor. Cornyn was the only Senator who did not vote on the stimulus plan.”

Most notably, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who is chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, was booed at the event in Austin -- on the grounds that he's part of the problem in Washington, having voted for the Wall St. bailout last fall. "I'm not part of Washington," Cornyn said in his own defense.

Warren ~ Dead-on comments, but fortunately, republicans aren't quite as good at branding as they used to be, as evidenced by the fact that a majority of Americans now view socialism favorably. They tried fascism, too, and that didn't work, either, probably because that was nothing more than projection, and incredibly transparent projection, at that. They went to the well a couple of times too often with that. My personal solution has always been to wear my liberal -- and feminist -- labels openly and then ask "so what"? Most of the time, people are stunned into silence because they've never thought any further than the lame ad hominem. Now THAT'S good sport.
x-republican ~ I'd love to hear what you base your assessment of Palin on ... I mean, besides her summation of her achievements in her announcment. As far as suing in England goes, not only are the laws more in her favor, but contrary to the "American rule," losers have to pay the other sides's attorney's fees. From this morning's AMA Morning Rounds:
California regulators place marijuana smoke on list of substances known to cause cancer.
The AP (7/4, Wohlsen) reported that California "environmental regulators last month voted to place marijuana smoke on its list of hundreds of substances known to cause cancer." The move, however, could lead to warning signs in medical marijuana dispensaries and labels on packaged pot within a year." Researchers "with the state's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment reviewed 27 studies of the links between marijuana and cancer in humans," finding that "marijuana smoke was clearly shown, through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles, to cause cancer." Meanwhile, "medical marijuana advocates sought to downplay the significance of the state's decision, arguing researchers have long known that the smoke contains cancer-causing compounds" and noting "the flaws in studies reviewed by the committee." Still, the measure was "voter-approved" under California's Proposition 65, instructing "regulators to identify substances that can cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm."

newpogo ~ Palin is a public figure, so she's more fair game for comments that neither you nor I would have to tolerate, and besides the First Amendment doesn't protect her from nasty comments made by private citizens, as Keith Olbermann likes to point out. However, even though Palin is a public figure, the First Amendment doesn't give the press complete license to lie, Even the tabloids occasionally lose.

Tony,
I like this article on exercising: It also has the right information about food and water, before and after.
Eating to Fuel Exercise
No matter what kind of exercise you do – whether it’s a run, gym workout or bike ride – you need food and water to fuel the effort and help you recover.
But what’s the best time to eat before and after exercise? Should we sip water or gulp it during a workout? For answers, I spoke with Leslie Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a certified specialist in sports dietetics. She’s also the author of a new book, “Sports Nutrition for Coaches” (Human Kinetics Publishers, July 2009). Here’s our conversation.

Didn't Rather lose his job? Even Jefferson said he regretted the slander he wote about Washington who refused to ever speak to him again. And look at what the Fed did in their attack of Stevens. A complete abuse of power. I guess everything said about Palin is true, otherwise she would be able to sue.
Instead everyone will attack Rep King over what he said about MJ. That will be even more important than anything coming out of the Middle East. In fact, media is more concerned abut the contents of MJ's will, than anything Hillary or Biden have to say......

Researchers across the country have been racing to breathe new life into Thomas Edison’s light bulb, a pursuit that accelerated with the new legislation. Amid that footrace, one company is already marketing limited quantities of incandescent bulbs that meet the 2012 standard, and researchers are promising a wave of innovative products in the next few years.
Indeed, the incandescent bulb is turning into a case study of the way government mandates can spur innovation.

Bob, I saw that article on incandescents this morning. It's taken me a while to get used to them, mostly the time it takes them to warm up and give off their max light output, (and I've got a few that are a really glary and annoying blue - I put them in the basement where only I go with any regularity and where all I need is light - not necessarily peasing light) but I'm fine with compact fluorescent bulbs in most applications. Plus, I spend almost no time replacing them because they last so damned long. I can think of a few places halogen incandescents might be preferable to the CFs, though, and Mrs. P really doesn't like CFs much. Maybe in a few months as the price starts to drop...

If Shannyn Moore is the target of Palin's threatened suit because she reported that there were rumors that Palin was under investigation over WSC, Palin loses unless there were no rumors about that, and I suspect there were, but I don't know anything other than what I read.
http://plaidlemur.wordpress.com/2009/07/04/the-palin-scandal-redux/
Considering that questions about the Palin- Stevens - WSC - SBS relationships have been out there since at least October, 08, it's not much of a stretch to think there may actually have been rumors about a fed investigation into that constellation of relationships. And the FBI didn't just happen to come out with a statement denying an investigation that no one was speculating about. They just don't do that.
In a defamation suit, truth is a defense (It used to be referred to as the absolute defense - but it's not really), but it is not an element for the plaintiff to meet.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:SP3017:
What passed and history following has shown the Left was clearly out of line in how they spun the bill and Hillary's dangerous mindset.
The Bill passed with changes that made Obama's spin of a Bill he claimed he didn't know was being voting on is absurd (both the reasoning and his excuse for not voting). The shrill attitude from the Left egged on by Hersh, cast Hillary as conservative as the GOP plotted to defeat the "supreme LIberal" in their independent masks during the initial primaries. Edwards, Dodd, Richardson all jumped on the HIllary is neocon bandwagon.
The irony today is that the administration nows makes clear the dangers of Iranian meddling through Quds. And Quds is now torturing people in Iran, active against Egypt and Saudi Arabia leading to the total disgust of Iran over Israel in Arab capitals.

Pogo, I've been using CFs virtually since they became available. And, I have them in every lamp in the house and several of the ceiling fixtures. Everyplace except those places where I want continuously variable light levels--something that CFs can't yet do.
But, that doesn't mean that I like them. I agree with most all the criticisms that I've read here.
And LEDs. Most of the traffic signals (red lights for those down South), have been converted from incandescent to LED. Lately, I've been noticing lots of burned out LED elements within the larger 'bulb'. Makes me wonder if we've been oversold on their expected life.
I think we'll be hard pressed finding a more satisfying indoor light than that produced by traditional incandescent bulbs.

We have similar opinions on CFs, Flatus. The only LED lights I personally have are in flashlights and a couple of closet lights - and I gotta say I really do like them - but only as specialty lights. I wonder if the folks back when electric lights began to come into use complained that they didn't give off thesame kind of light gas lights, oil lamps and candles did?

Pogo, funny you should ask. It's my understanding that people eagerly anticipated the arrival of electricity to their neighborhoods, streets, and their own homes.
During the transition period, new houses being built that were in gas only areas were often wired for electricity, too. And we had the REA that brought electricity to farms. That's what got it to our farm in the 50s, and to my sister's Vermont house in the 70s.
We still dine by candlelight. But the old kerosene lanterns that we used are long, and happily, gone.
So far as gas lights, I remember a piece of sheet music we had on the family piano, "The old lamplighter". You know, the feller that went around lighting the street lights. Talk about being redundant. :)

From what I've read, Shannyn Moore is too small for Palin to fool with. Her attorney was naming names like the NY TIMES, MSNBC, the VILLAGE VOICE. Aiming high. And at media outlets she deems "liberal".
I think she's showing a dangerous lack of sophistication here. Isn't there a distinct difference between lies (absolute untruths, which she thinks these outlets told) and innuendo (which most of their suppositions and rumors amount to, to my admittedly unsophisticated way of reading and processing)?

maxtrue,
I doubt that Israel would need to launch nukes against urban areas of Iran. If I were a gambling man, I'd wager that Israel already has micronukes in Qom and mybe elsewhere. That'd be one way to occultate an Imam.
Big nukes would be useful for sealing Iranian n-weapons programs into their various underground nests, by turning all the stone and sand thereabouts into a molten mess.
However, I am inclined to believe that the subs are sealing the Straits of Tirana, or possibly even the Persian Gulf, against Iranian arms shipments to Gaza and Lebanon. Either way, the Iranians should understand by the subs moving through the Suez Canal and into the Red Sea, that their intemperate talk and hostile actions are likely to hurt them, possibly fatally.
The unfortunate thing is that Determinists, whether Calvinists, commies, or Muslims, often don't give a rip about consequences to others. (But then, which true-believing ideolgue ever does ? During the Albigensian Crusade, a Bishop approved the murder of everyone in a French town, saying, "God will know His own".) Didn't get this up in time for the past weekend, but this will give you a whole year to practice. Drink like a founding father (and probably mother) with Fish House Punch plus a nice history to go with it:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123758172905298941.html
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups superfine sugar
2 quarts water
1 quart lemon juice
2 quarts dark rum
1 quart cognac
4 ounces peach brandy
Glass Type: punch cup
Instructions
In a large bowl, first dissolve the sugar in enough of the water to do the trick, then incorporate the lemon juice. Next, add the spirits and the rest of the water -- or as much of it as you wish to contribute (less in summer, to allow for meltage). Slip in as large a block of ice as you can procure. (Use your imagination -- if worse comes to worst, a mixing bowl full of water that's been frozen overnight will do the trick; run a little hot water on the outside of the bowl to unmold.) Let stand in a cool place for an hour or so before serving. Do not garnish
Posted by: Jamie
| July 6, 2009 6:16 PM
Jamie, looking at the recipe, made me think of the whisky sours I used to make. Instead of the superfine sugar, etc., I'd make a batch of simple syrup and keep it in the refrig until needed.

There were "books" of the "bible" floating around for hundreds of years before they were finally vetted and okayed for inclusion in the official version which excluded almost all of the Gnostic books and some of the more fanciful magical creations.
Even then the arguments continued with various books among different sects not to mention the big Protestant Catholic schism that tossed some more books which is why there are now two "official" bibles in Christianity.
One of the gnostic gospels you might enjoy whether true or not is The Gospel According to Mary Magdalene
http://www.gnosis.org/library/marygosp.htm
Many think this one was tossed in order to preserve the patriarchal system and prevent her from being recognized as a disciple equal to or greater than the others and possibly the wife of Jesus even if the hit book and movie did fudge a lot of the details.

Rez, one more time. Click on the Kyl Bill and understand the history. Certain parts are missing and words have been changed. Reid uttered the classic line afterwards, "we will NEVER use military force against Iran". The orginal purpose of the Bill was to give fair notice to Iran and that acts of war and terror would be called as such. It was essential in the enfocement part to come later which would brand Quds as a terrorist group, a fact many Iranians now share. I can't help but imagine the surreal irony Hillary must be experiancing. SHe knew US troops had died at the hand of Quds.
Of course you are guht Rez, but. I meant the orginal Kyle Bill that Reid vilified and cut down while Obama rejecting Reid's compromise, recast his "not present" vote and stoked Kyl Bill fears of Bush bombing Iran. Hersh and the media, even the NIE all played their part suspending rational accomodation of threatening facts and consequences for us into a toothless signal. Obama painted Hillary in Bush's corner while at the same time rejected the surge as more war mongering Hillary supported. He made the stunning claim that leaving Iraq in chaos would produce peace and gave a noticable nod to MoveON's betrayous poster camapign. Even Gates who was serving at the time, said the Democratic claims were absurd. In fact, Bush blocked an Israeli attack request, withheld a delivery of bunker busters and began talks regarding Iran/Iraq with Iran.
The surge proved effective, violence declined though Iran, now convinced Obama would prevail, started more than a year's worth of provocative and illegal activity as the anti-war movement ultimately brfocused their guns on Hillary and McCain. The Reid version showed what Democrats had in mind.
So it is ironic Quds is under the O-microscope for their efforts to subvert Iraq. Maybe we'll find them next in the jungles of Honduras. The DoD is focuing on Iranian activities because new operations are exactly what the Mullahs think might divert attention. Ahmadinejad has pushed Quds to the front in side Iran while Mousavi speaking in public still rejects the elections as legal. He is walking a fine line between the gallows and victory. How many will die while this battle is played out?
Tony, I got to say this: Those cross dressing Taliban mentioned on CNN today that slipped past out troops would never have gotten past a gay platoon. Another reason the DOD is crazy not to enlist the gay community in their present theaters of combat. And I would suggest the military examine the body builders in next year's gay pride day and imagine them carrying 50 cals in the sweltering desert sun.........
Back to the crystal ball: WH tried to respin Biden's remarks over the weekend, but given the silence from the Arab world and the threats coming from Iran, Obama is measuring his statements.
What sayth Hillary?
Cafferty File is all over this Biden one.
Is Obama firing up the bus?
Hell, why should he? We'll be debating whether MJ was a molester over the next week. I wonder which is worse; a nation on vacation in 2009, or just Bush on vacation in the summer of 2001?

Solar,
Julu 22, 1209 : Simon de Montfort was besieging the city of Beziers, a LIBERAL city owned and run by Viscount Raymond Roger Trencavel. The Abbot of Citeaux, Arnold Amaury (or Arnald Amalric), the head of all the Cistercians and the Papal Representative, said, "Neca eos omnes. Deus suos agnoscet." The words mean "Slay them all; God will know His own". 20,000 people were murdered by the Crusaders that day, including Catholics, Albigensians, and Jews, who were unarmed neutrals in the quarrel. The figure is 8 x the number of Christians that Diocletian had killed throughout the Roman Empire during what Christain have traditionally called his "Terror". Estimates on the total number of dead (mostly civilian) during the Albigensian Crusades range from 100,000 to 1,000,000. It is extremely hard to credit that the South of what is now France would have had a million people total, let alone that such a number was slain.
Of course, Amaury probably did not say the famous words, for the French soldiers would not have understood his Latin. However, the historian who wrote the account of the siege, undoubtedly wrote it in Latin.
Asw far as I know, the Catholic victims of this Catholic greed and intolerance have not yet been declared martyrs and saints.
I dunno what is wrong with the name Solar. It was the first name of that brilliant Edwardian detective, Mr. Solar Pons.

X, I actual agree with you, but perhaps the signal is for those breaking ranks inside Iran. They can point to the winds of war and Quds doesn't want to die that fast.
Panic often exposes weaknesses and diversion's a classic ploy. Mullahs have got to worry about opposition giving aid to enemy intel.
Right about those arms shippments, but I think micronukes are mostly myth. I have listened to many arguements. The inventor of the neutron bomb sounds completely wacky on this issue.

It's like Eisenstein's movies, which I basically enjoy, but this one is so dense with visual effects and meaness. I want to try the Mockery.

We can't round up or kill every terrorist or asshole thug. We could encourage those who advance a politic that doesn't allow for the activity of Quds. I know we have done some questionable things in the name of freedom, but I would like to think Dems and Repubs know when to draw the line.
Don't let me stop your biting attacks on Republicans. I often agree, but perhaps you can help Democrats with their questionable logic too. I was recently surprised to learn that FDR's mistress kept a diary and in it she says FDR was certain he and Stalin could bring a new order to the world. Something he obviously did not pass on to Truman.
And Nixon? His recent tape transcripts reveal something not quite human. Frankly, I am amazed we got this far........

He not only had a tv talk show early on but was a radio

according to him because of his opposition to the Iraq war.
And then he was on Air America/NY for a short
time.

In spite of the trip down memory lane with The Browns, this is the song that's been running through my head all day:

1958 hit for Ray Price, written by Roger Miller, who was in Ray's band, the Cherokee Cowboys, at the time. A B-side to a Bill Anderson song called "City Lights".

I saw Roger Miller perform live once in what was actually a small night club type venue in San Jose. It was a wonderful show. One of the country music mavens can tell me about "Thumbs". He was in the band and played the guitar on his lap.
I've seen this done with Dobros but not standard guitars.

XR,
Thanks for that last bit of information, I used to have 8-10 hrs of tapes that had all of the Popes, and bishop's reign on terror, thru out history....including the pope and his son that became pope.
Talk about blood thirsty. Mostly it was just to show ruthlessness towards the populations that shown loyalty to the last dead pope. The crusaders were Nazi's!! Keep em coming if you have any more info like that.

"The orginal purpose of the Bill was to give fair notice to Iran and that acts of war and terror would be called as such."
We do not have to announce our rights under international law taken in terms - that will be (or will be miscontrued as to be) - a provacation.
It escapes me how so many hawks fail to see the advantage in Obama's foreign policy.
Let's say talking to Iran or NK will not change their actions.
(which is the most likely scenario)
Will the US be in a stronger position if it:
-Engages in serious talks with these countries leaders. Lay out a clear plan that acknowledges the rights and interests of these nations - and gives a serious ultimatium - backed by most of the world (including key trading partners).
In other words, respectully draw a line in the sand - and hit them if they cross it.
Of just throw sand in their eyes and wait for a response.
And all our actions are precedent.

Don - Uno, if u r lurking, take peek at this. Fascinating.......you will like the comparison to computers, I think.
Why microbes are smarter than you thought
The vast majority of species on Earth are single-celled. Most of these languish in obscurity – many have never even been named – but some of the relatively few species that have been studied exhibit remarkable abilities.
Many of these are physical: some micro-organisms are amazingly strong; others can hibernate for hundreds of thousands of years or thrive in environments so extreme that they would kill off most other life forms in a flash.
But many bacteria and protists also exhibit behaviour that looks remarkably intelligent. This behaviour isn't the result of conscious thought – the sort you find in humans and other complex animals – because single-celled organisms don't have nervous systems, let alone brains.

Since Solar knows everything, then where is Carol and why isn't she here?
Solar, On that article on brain soundtracks, it is interesting that the schizophrenic brain can be recognized as different from a normal brain or one with Alzheimers. If they get it perfected enough, you can imagine one day that they can use it to diagnose (and maybe even help treat) mental illnesses.

I ran across this one a couple days late. I enjoy his take on things sometimes.
Untold Truths About the American Revolution
By Howard Zinn, July 3, 2009
"Who actually gained from that victory over England? It’s very important to ask about any policy, and especially about war: Who gained what? And it’s very important to notice differences among the various parts of the population. That’s one thing were not accustomed to in this country because we don’t think in class terms. We think, “Oh, we all have the same interests.” For instance, we think that we all had the same interests in independence from England. We did not have all the same interests."

Tont, I once read about Turing who was gay. He helped win WW2. If there was more on gay contribution, that would go a lng way. Stero types are the killer. People think of flames or human chains in bath houses. Or then there is prison.
over the last decade gays have been the most reliable clients and he most human on many levels. Mayber that's just because they love straight construction guys.
Richard Bey used to live at 308 Wrest 57th St. I once watched the OScars with him. A nice guy who was convinced when he turned political and took sme swipes at Clinton (he is an Independent that leans Left), the network told him to think Springer. He was tired of that stuff and longed for some more intellectual. He is actually a nice, repectful guy willing to talk with strangers. He does have a soft spot for exotic women, but then who doesn't? He didn't move far away and often says hello when walking by. You would be surprised he doesn't find my take so far fetched. He prides himslef the peacemaker, or at least balanced in his political take. I think he was orginally a HIllary supporter, but I could be wrong.......
Warren, Obama's strategy on Iran went out the window long ago. He refused to conceed reality and then events blew his plan away. I don't think you can praise someone who flip flopped during the primary and now has Biden telgraph Israel's threat. You must have missed my comments about why the BBC calls Iran, Hillary's foreign policy now.
What Obama might manage is to construct some kind of good cop and bad cop which ultimately we must say is more of the practical egoist in Obama. He doesn't want to fail more than being right. Not a bad quality. He is following still some dangerous ideas which I will ccontinue to rant about. His military budget projections aren't great. His MIddle East Plan has been blown away by the new Sunni Israeli alliance and Palestinian duplicity. He may blunder in Honduras and be late to see the dangers in Africa brewing. He is fortunate in timing with Iran imploding and China facing a real problem in the East. Egypt and Saudi Arabia woke up and Iraq was not Lost. Seems he is picking Bush's fruit to some extent. Europe still has done little in Afghanistan. Pakistan is a question mark. You know I do not want Obama to fail, so I leave my suggestions here.
I appreciate X Republican today. Whatever I have said before in irritation, he is no dummy. And the women here are up on their game.

Karl Rove on O'Reilly re: Obama in Russia:
Fisrt he said it was a squandered opportunity because we have 2 young Presidents over there that are focused on 20th Century issues, i.e., nukes, and not the threats of the 21st Century - Iran, NK and terrorism...
I take issue with that statement - but his next one was the jawdropper. In his inevitable critique of Obama - he said that arms reduction was the No. 1 priority for Russia cause they want to say "we got something from the US." And all we got are over-fly rights over Russia which saves us about $133 Million - and makes re-supply routes to Afghanistan easier.
That is a "big tradeoff to give them a big psychological advantage and we get a small thing."
***
Are you f'ing kidding me?! Russia gets "big psychological" advantage (and the US can still blow up the world hundreds of times over) - and all we get is $133 million and better supply routes!!
What an idiot. That is what these guys don't get. Obama is getting tangible benefits and good will all over the world - and he does not have to actually give up anything except a "psychological advantage"!! I will take that deal anytime.
Obama is respectful to leaders like Chavez - and he gains the respect of the people Chavez rules over.

Warren, the fruit he's pickin is
1. Obama doesn't have Saddam to deal with
2. Obama has a novel alliance forming without his help between Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel
3. Hizb'Allah and Hamas have completely embarrassed themselves and are low in the local polls.
4. A revolution is ripping Iran from the insides
5. China is experiancing disorder in the East
Bush had a hand in this. On many levels Obama is continuing Bush policy. So Warren, don't throw old Bush completely out the window.
As for the flip flopping, that should be evident and the BBC isn't completely stupid. Without Hillary, Obama may have already blasted Honduras more than the Mullahs.
Tony, I think the measure of how far gays have come is by how many end up conservatives. NOt that I would like that....One myth might be that gays are always very LIberal. Not true.

Wrong on your last comment Warren, but Rove misses something. Russia's primary strength is nuclear deterrence. They don't want to reduce nukes that much despite what XRepublican said (I think I got you right X).
Actually, Russia projects more force with nukes than with their crumbling conscripted army. Russia is also hurting economically despite oil revenue. Their idea is to reduce some nukes while making them harder to destroy with missile defense. And their manueverable rentry capsule is just another violation of past treaties.
They are so afraid of missile defense taking the credibility out of their nukes, so they would trade some to slow missile defense. Rove is right it is a joke to reduce our nukes and ignore the real threats rising. It is incredible given NK and Iran, Russia would argue against missile defense and more so that Obama didn't point out the obvious more strongly.
Putin will make this lower number contingent on no missile defense. Watch......
Posted by: maxtrue

That is, reduce nukes AND missile defense. And there is no international ban on neutron bombs. Let's hope that one doesn't make the news in months to come.

I don't know how you can attribute any of these except 1 to Bush. And with respect to 3 & 4 - the hard-line, nationalistic leaders would be much higher in the polls if Obama was calling them "evil-doers" and threatening to bomb their nations off the face of the map.
And I have often said that good can come from some of Bush's actions. But no good came from his arrogant and brash words.
