Back in the day, if we wanted to control costs, we would freeze them....perhaps, congress can put the health costs on hold by freezing them while they are vacation spending that lobbying money. Just stick 'em the freezer while you are gone, public servants.

I think some of these Congressional clowns have had their brains in deep freeze mode for a long time, BlondeW...and maybe a good percentage of the populace, too -- cause they keep getting elected.

"If Congress really wants to pass health care, they would work through their August recess." In the immortal words of Bert Lahr - or was it the cowardly lion - could have been both - wait, it was, "Ain't it th' truth?"
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2009/07/30/us/politics/politics-us-food-safety-congress.html?_r=1
See, weak leadership in the house - debating a desperately needed measure under limited timeframe to avoid amendments without having the votes lined up to advance it.

The biggest obstacle is the insurance companies so if you can't beat them join them. That's how its going & we all knew it would & that's why this bill or any bill which allows the insurance companies to profit will fail the peoples expectations. It cant be . Its either the insurance companies win or we win. One or the other.

That's it in a nut shell Buford.
And the only way we win is if we get Universal Health Care (single pay) and as a result, a lot of those companies go out of business (the majority of them?). But they have a lot of 'friends' in Washington (it's almost like they're 'part' of the government), so therefore that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

Don't look at recessions as something bad. Everyone needs a breather....so do economies.......Just don't look to gov't to pull out of this or any recession. The private sector will get it's act together.....like it has so many recessions before.

Pogo, they're incredibly obtuse. I can believe they would call a question without knowing the answer. And, it's time for playing hardball with the Republicans. Their leadership simply is not a loyal opposition, while many in their rank and file would like to be.
This Congress is so incredibly weak at a time when we need strength and vision.

Jax, The only thing you've ever said that's really turned me complete off is that you blamed our problems on the 'entire' baby boomers population. A whole generation Jax! That's bizarre and it's transference. You usually are so good about the accountability thing, taking responsibility for what's going on.
Besides, it's always been the politicians that drive the bus. How much have we ever had to say about things. You have said often that we should revolt, let them know we want to change things. But how? Have you ever figured out a way to control the political decisions made by our government?
You're rarely rude. But that baby boomer cop out was rude.

This is a fact......I know its not popular to point this out but the fact is....not ONE single republican vote is needed in either house to pass any legislation.....not ONE......

Blue Dogs are incredibly vulnerable in their districts--at each election the Repugs toss dollars atop of dollars in efforts to malign and defeat them.
The Dogs should be embraced and supported as fellow Democrats operating under quite adverse circumstances.
If they are under pressure from their constituents on a difficult question, support them, Not with a bunch of super-liberals coming to their districts, but with real facts and figures and prominent thinkers articulating the need for the Democratic position on the legislation.

Like I said yesterday and today, the biggest problem is weak leadership in Congress. If the leadership actually supported the Obama initiatives, they would pass. Repugs, annoying as they are, are not the problem. The problem is two-fold IMHO - Harry doesn't have the leadership chops to get enough blue dogs to support cloture votes before the bills get diluted so much in committee that they become legislative pablum, and Nancy has no control over her committee chairs, to the same result. The underlying problem is money - wrt health insurance reform, the health insurance lobby owns the folks who are f-ing this up. Max Baucus is a prime example his favorite music is the siren song of the medical lobby. I beleive it's a lost cause, and Obama doesn't seem to be getting into the fray to try and move it back to something of substance. I think the leadership he could show would be to veto the damn watered down piece of crap that comes out of conference and send his bill, with at least a public option, back to Congress with clear nessage that no bill wtihout the public option will ever get his signature. Problem is this - 80% of the public is happy with what they have - kinda makes "explain your vote against reform to yor constituents" meaninglless. I don't know, maybe Rahm is twisting arms, but if so, he needs a stronger grip.

Patsi,
The Congressman who put it in is from Oregon which is a POLST state. The POLST is even easier than a living will as it is a two sided form your primary care physician has on hand in their office. You keep a copy in your papers and the local hospital has access on computer. Washington is a POLST state as well, so I have one. Easy peezy and saves a lot of anguish.

All it says in the healthcare bill is that the counseling appointment will be covered by insurance. My doctor does it with all the patients not just the seniors. You never know when you might take a header off a motorcycle.

Yep this lazy boomer worked for 50 years. The ex husband worked for 40 years. The children have worked all of their adult lives including one who spent 20 years in the US Army, both are still working. As with any generality, some truth but not enough to make a generality.
Spoiled not so much, but the government that undercut them that meant women went into the workforce to have the same standard of living as their parents and then neglected children, schools, hospitals, all those other things they used to do for "free". A sad divorce rate when a lot of the women found out they could provide for themselves without being chattal. Again neglected children, schools, hospitals and other stuff they used to do for free.
The rise of the fast food generation because it was easier to stuff them on the way home from work and give in to them being spoiled just for some peace before you have to go back to work.
My you could make a case that what is wrong is a spoiled generation X. Are you one of the "spoiled".

"I think some of these Congressional clowns have had their brains in deep freeze mode for a long time, BlondeW...and maybe a good percentage of the populace, too -- cause they keep getting elected.."
If the R's were as dumb as most think that they are...how come Gore, and Kerry lost, does not matter why the did, they did. So the R's don't look so dumb to the public. They will not look as dumb as the new Dems in charge, that can't do anything at all. They must do something now...or loose the advantage that they have. Then for the next 30 years tell us how dumb the R's are.....as T ony say's .....you ( the public) funny!
Thats a great question....why do we keep sending them back to rob us.....whoes fault is it in the first place? etc. etc. I keep thinking ( to the point that it was hurting my head so much ...that I told Judy ...not tonight ..my head hurts...she did not care HA) and my head just kept on hurting,,and hurting....what Democrate would I really want to be in the white house today......I finally got it.

Last autumn, I believe Mudcat stated, Obama doesn't appear to fight for the little guy. He is not a fighter. This is painfully true.
His roots are in community organzing and he treats the healthcare problem like his election. He needs to get tough and go back to his comrades in the Senate and demand action and quickly. No one is going to bat for the little people like they did for Wall Street.
And if Obama keeps drinking and smoking, I think he is in the starting days of addiction. It sneaks-up on you and you are not getting any younger, Prez O.

That we should remember that if the old man, and crazy (some thing like that..sorry for being lazy, and not getting the right quote) we would have some one worse.
That is a big problem to me,,,why did he, or people that think along those lines not vote for a third choice.
Team Sports...thinking.....is not the way we should pick our politicians. There would be a third party if we all did not line up, just to vote straight Dem, or Repug. IMO, in the long run, it is our faults. They play us like a fine tuned fiddle.!!!!!!

While I was operating a construction machine the other day, it occurred to me that.....all business are required to have insurance in order to be awarded a contract. This insurance it reasonably priced, and covers my workers and my self, and it vary s by the what is needed for that particular project.
If all of us in biz, are required and it is affordable,,,why could our H C. ins do the same, or transfer this cost and make it part of it all??? maybe Warren, and some of the other can help refine this?

"Insurance is a mega-ponzi scheme. "
It surely is. When I think of all the money I paid in and almost never even went to a doctor -- then with one broken shoulder and a lot of BS -- lost it. So what I did all those years, was pay someone else's doctor bills. And they are probably the same bastards who now say: "Well, people who work HAVE insurance."
Posted by: Patsi

Patsi..you didn't pay someone's doctor bills, you paid for a retreat for executives to figure out how to bilk more customers. Profit is poison in health care.
Public option is the only way...do you know how I know? The fight against it is so hard. Private insurance industry knows this.
During the recess, health care costs will rise higher than before and by the time recess is over, we will be paying more.

I want to follow an uncomfortable thought up here.....my workers and friends have told me that I take the bull by the antlers often....I get burned, sometimes...but here goes:
It was easy to take sides when Brian was abusive to the ones that I cared for deeply. I did not have a problem telling Burrito to pea up a rope........but I found it impossible tot take sides when....Jack, Carol, and Sea was arguing, and I won't do it now.....I care for them all and won't do that....I tried several times to get them, and all of us to take a look at the bigger picture...the system is what is wrong.....and Obama,,,still looks weak minded to me. for evening answering the question.
I know that it will be hard for someone to take sides with me, against another person that. Sea, Jack, or Carol, is also friends with, and cares for the few of us that are arguing.
I have been talking about the R's and The D's just picking a side and defending it.......no matter what......I think that this is the problem that society has....when they pick our leaders to represent us. I believe that this is what is wrong with organizes MYTH religion.....just one against the other......I do think that all sides had it right.....and that it was far to early to give a final judgment.....this is what I think went wrong ....we were all to fast on the draw...and did not wait for all of the info to come out........

I still think, (as always, just my opinion), we were talking about different things sometimes. You can support a cop and also support the fact that police brutality and abuse is a fact of life.
In my thinking, everything we say here is an 'opinion'. When we start mistakenly assuming that there is only one way to think about things, we're kidding ourselves.
If I want facts, I'll spend the day reading Wikipedia and other such information.

Since we're being brave and saying what we want here, then there's something I have to say.
I didn't see Carol call anyone names, or condemn anyones view or opinions, or go after anyone personally. I never heard her say there is not police brutality. To the contrary, she talked about her awareness of it in many cases.
Carol was criticized for talking about the point of view she was pondering at the time. She never claimed it was the only point of view to think about, but it just happened to be the one that she felt like exploring at the time. I agreed with her on most of it.
Everyone should be able to talk about what they want to talk about, without fear of being ganged up on by others, on a personal level. Disagreement is expected. Comments about the commenter should be off limits.

Chloe,
"That's because it's so hard to get to the truth Solar. When the campaigns became 'one' with the media, where to we go for facts. We may get to the truth as individuals, but how do we coordinate our findings with the general public."
First of all, the public already knows the truth, they just wait to be sold by one party or the other.......they know that there is no choice except one or the other........and the the media know this....this is why they play Fox, and friends ( the R's) and the Msnbc's (the D's) against the other......same goes for news papers.........
Now that we have the new world of Internet news.....blogs.....this is also becoming a game for two.......who out there is talking about the independents? The third parties ....the people other than the few who let us down so often.....
Chloe we know already, but are too lazy ( as a nation) go take the time to be objective...we are more than willing for the stations to pick our candidates while we bitch for them doing it....that is why all of the late night clowns have all of the power that they do...and the radio stations....we are just a bunch of sheep to them....we know,,,,but don't care...we are lazy is al.

Solar, if you want to see change in the political system such that it goes away from the 2 party system, you'll have to take big money out of it. I may be wrong, but I do believe that there is always the potential for a third party espousing this or that issue to get enough traction to put a few folks in Congress and elect some state and local officials, but that can't be done without money, and lots of it. Obama's small contribution model employed in the primaries is one that a third party could utilize to minimize the effect of big money on the system, at least within the ranks of that party, but it would be a nearly impossible task.
Oh, and I can't tell whether you or chloe legitimately claimed lunch - so in the off chance neither of you did, LUNCH.

BW, fuel for the fire.
House Bill Poised to Spend Billions on Weapons Pentagon Doesn’t Want
At Least $6.9 Billion in Unwanted Equipment in Bill
Forced to eat this shit......up. This next 2 paragraph is what the truth to it all is to me!!!!!!!!
Expect to come to the House floor by the end of the week, the 2010 military budget still includes at least $6.9 billion in spending on weapons that the Defense Department has insisted that it doesn’t need or even want.
Though the administration managed to get some of the earmarks for the F-22A aircrafts redistributed to weapons that it might feasibly use in some sort of actual war, the bill is still packed with earmarks which would help military contractors in the districts of key legislators.
Among the expenditures are $400 million to finish the construction of five VH-71 presidential helicopters which the presdient says he doesn’t want. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has mocked the helicopters for over-elaborate design and ridiculous costs, noting they would “enable the president to, among other things, cook dinner while in flight under nuclear attack.”
Congressmen in support of the bill claim that they have been secretly told by military contacts that the devices are needed in spite of the Pentagon’s insistance that they aren’t needed. Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) has promised to lead the fight against the earmarks, aiming to force a string of votes on what he says amount to “no-bid contracts” handed out to private companies.
Rooting for a Repug.....will be new to me.....GO Rep, J. Flake....GO

Pogo,
Agreed with you last post about the Money.....like I said.....the natural law party had a lot of local "elected" people in place...they were doing it right ..imho...starting from the ground up....it took years to get to the point where they were.
Prof. Haglen ran in all of the elections ....except for the last two.....what dove him out it the $ that it took to run.....so now we have to do it from the inside of the two partys .......we have to pick the best ones from both the R;s and The D's...take a look at them on a one by one basis...starting at the ground floor, city and state just saying...no? and you are rigt...Lunch was never legitamily claimed today...and all ties goes to the old members ...just a little perk for being there first.......I have to learn to stop when im ahead....LOL...gonna get it from them. I have never seen Carol be mean spirited towards others...she is alway generous with all of us.
I have never seen Sea be mean spirited toward other..........she is
always generous with all of us.
I have seen Jack in some scraps with all of us.......and can relate to what he was saying....not the personal comments....but what I know to be the truth of what he was trying to say......specially....that if someone did not get it...then they never could.....he was talking from the heart...and has been there to defend the ones that he was talking about.......If there were more people like him that got involved, we would not be having this ( as much) problem in our society.....there is a lot to think about for me, not just who is right...and who said what to whom......that is a little troubling, but not if you see the big picture that he painted......

Thanks Flatus. I try. Frankly, I am frustrated by the dems failing to give as good as they have gotten in the past. Their misguided support for the Bushian view of all things related to 9/11 and its aftermath has been rewarded with parrty line responses to all things. The 60 vote illusion (thanks not to the idies, but rather to the Blud Dogs - read DINO here) has been mischaracterized by the right, knowing that they have the Senate Blue dogs at a minimum to obstruct any real change. The argument that "the dems have a majority in the house and enough votes in the senate to overcome a filibuster , so they can pass any law they want" is dishonest, and those making that argument know that. Fact is, as long as the Blue Dogs exist, and they will, any change that can be considered progressive will be incremental, if at all. And it pisses me off.

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old, equally priced to the family- owned company’s most expensive whisky ever, will be released in 500 individually numbered, hand-blown glass bottles adorned with Scottish silver and packaged in leather-bound cases, the Dufftown, Scotland-based distiller said today.

the reason for not inviting her is that she would have to bring her attorney along and then it would behoove the other folks to bring their lawyers. do you get the picture i'm painting? the lawyers will argue over everything and stifle conversation of the principles. probably even demand wine, then argue over color, year and vineyard. or being the ilk they are, advise the clients that talking while drinking (twd) is risky and inevitably leads to donnybrooks given the irish ancestery of all concerned (except the lady who is portuguese and knows better).

"Although there are no official estimates yet on crop loss, a severe outbreak of late blight fungus in tomatoes, first noted in June, is sweeping through farms and gardens in the Northeast.
John Mishanec, an educator with the integrated pest management program at Cornell University, compared the highly contagious and incurable disease to a “nuclear explosion” in the region’s tomato crop. “And unless the weather changes, it’s going to get worse,” he said.
Every state in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic has confirmed recent cases of late blight, which normally does not appear in the region until August, if at all. The source of the outbreak is being investigated by pathologists. Home gardens likely helped spread the infection: Lowe’s, Home Depot, Kmart and Wal-Mart all sold tomato seedlings with late blight in their garden centers from April to June. All are offering refunds or credits to gardeners who must destroy their plants."

I find it interesting that Drudge did not report Seattle breaking 2 all time temperature records yesterday. They set one the night before with a new all time high minimum record as well as the one during the day.

Cbob,
I already told this story about an old friend (old timer) from years ago. He had a rep for being a bit of an orphic and showman to boot. Think Chief Dan George here.
It seems he was prevailed upon (and paid too) by the city fathers of a small OK community to perform a Rain Dance during an extended drought.
I guess he went through a hour-long ceremony that included singing and praying, but especially a lot of dancing. Later that evening there was an un-forecasted downpour that would of strangled a frog (thx sturg).
Years later he asked to do it again but declined. When asked why he confided that he couldn't remember all of the dance moves.8-)
Another true tale from the rez.

Hey all.... haven't read the thread.... don't have time....
just coming on for a moment to tell all you birders that someone at the fair is a glass blower that specializes in hummingbird feeders. I asked him if he knew anything about there being fewer hummingbirds this year. He said he'd noticed it in his own garden and emailed dr. somebody (I forget the name) who is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on hummers and was told that it is a natural cyclical down year for hummers. Not to worry, they'll be plentiful again soon.

I want to thank you guys for the support today. You guys are more important to me than you may think. Jack is important to me. That is why I got my feelers hurt.
Jack I think you are funny. You are about the only person who can crack me up with only one word. It is usually the one perfect word response when you do it. You have a good heart. I respect the work and effort you make with your neighbors.
One morning I read that you missed having me to talk to that morning. I had gotten up late that morning and didn’t have time to check in. I felt good all day when I read that. I wouldn’t have been as hurt if someone like Brian had said mean things to me even though I don’t think he ever did.
I don’t expect anyone to agree with me. When I debate things, as I said this morning, I’m not even sure if I agree with me yet. With the issue that is the subject of this controversy, I tried to imagine myself in the cops place because not many were doing that.
With my job I am certainly aware that cops can and do abuse their power. I too often have to take care of the results of it. At my correctional center/jail, some even like to show me who wears the pants around there. I think the ones who do it are resentful of my education but it is not because I flaunt it.
I know that education is not an indicator of intelligence. One of the smartest guys I ever knew never made it past the 7th grade. Education can sometimes get in the way of intelligence and some of my best learning didn’t come from any classrooms or books, it came from my life experiences.
Another thing that hurt was that others seemed to say harsher things than I did and didn’t get the pounding I got. I feel that it may not be as much what I said as just that it was me saying it. I can’t make you like me Jack and I’m sure I can find a way to live with that fact if you don’t. It won’t be easy though.

Ha! Rockefeller just on the Ed Show opposing coops because all of the ones in existent except two are unregulated and don't work. The two that work and are regulated are in "Puget Sound" and "Minnesota". The one in Mennesota is the Mayo Clinic which has already been highly praised for delivering great care at a much lower cost and "Puget Sound" is mine that I was raving about.
It really can be done, but Rockefeller is right that it shouldn't be established as part of this Health Care Bill (The Baucus Plan) because without sound regulation and oversight, it can really mess with patients and the systems that do work require a lot more study to find the successful secrets.
I could see them as part of the delivery system for the Public Option but only with a whole lot of inspection to prevent fraud and abuse.

"it is your fault, and as you say HA!. "
I'll take that blame proudly, Solar...Miss Maria had her first ballet recital and it was hilarious. True Lucille Ball stuff. Suffice it to say she didn't do well following along but took off on some leaps and twirls of her own. The audience was in hysterics laughing and applauding before it was over. (Of course they're 3 year olds so nobody was exaclty in step.)

After a long an pain staking deliberation.....about today's lunch that is; the fair thing is to give this one to Pogo. This was Chloe's 2nd attempt at claiming the Lunch...and Pogos first only........gavel down.....both of you do the club house moose call.... and get ready to rumble tomorrow. How about lunch can be called....between 11: 40 on..or maybe even call it brunch...and get Teach. Boo to get in on it,,,and anyone else that wants to help do the carpentry work needed to expand...and we can even have elections and all that....hehehe of course I count the votes.....

open letter from Larry Flynt to the president. The Daily Beast.
President Obama:
You have proven to be a great campaigner. You have yet to demonstrate your ability to govern. Who needs the Republicans? They don’t know what compromise is. They’re just out to derail your presidency. Bitch slap ’em at every opportunity and put them in their place. They lost; you didn’t.
You need some gonads, Mr. President, and if you don’t have any, as Hillary would say, you’d better grow some.
As for disloyal Democrats, you need to yank the carpet out from under them. Remind them that their survival is dependent upon yours. Don’t pull punches, Mr. President. You need some gonads, and if you don’t have any, as Hillary would say, you’d better grow some.
You have failed to keep many campaign promises. You’ve ignored civil liberty violations such as warrantless wiretapping. You passed a stimulus package that is obviously full of pork for Democrats. You handed over billions more in taxpayer dollars to crooked bankers. You listened to the very people who created our economic meltdown, the Mutt and Jeff team of Larry Summers and Tim Geithner. You’ve let the insurance lobbyists hijack healthcare reform to the detriment of every man, woman, and child in America.
You must say what you mean and mean what you say. Closing Guantanamo means just that. You could do it right now, Mr. President. You don’t have to wait until January. You can place terrorist suspects in the federal correctional system without creating any risk to our citizens.
You’re a nice guy. Everybody likes nice guys. Sometimes they finish last. You don’t want that, and neither do those of us who voted you in.
The American people have placed their future in your hands. For heaven’s sake don’t let them down. Don’t let yourself down.
Larry Flynt

Last night at work a truck driver from one of the trucking companies that does business with us collapsed on the floor of the shipping area. He hit his head and was completely unconcious. The workers on the dock called our ERT (Emergency Response Team) and they started CPR immediately. Luckily, one of the people from 1st shift just happened to be working last night and he is a EMT. I walked into work and saw a supervisor running to the nurse's station to get the defibrillator. He had apparently had a heart attack. They started working on the truck driver and the fire department arrived soon after. They were able to get a faint pulse. They worked on him for 30 minutes before taking him to the hospital. Hopefully, he made it through. But, it sounds like everyone at work did an amazing job last night in this emergency situation.

Craig, I don't find that shirt you have one that offensive but I would recommend you lose the t-shirt under it. I do find the clothespens a little tacky. I bet some of the guys here have a better idea on how to balance out your fan blades without having to watch yellow and red things spinning around all day.
Jamie, what are you doing to stay cool? I talked with my sister up your way today to ask if she had AC at her place. The last place she had didn't and when I visited one summer and it got up in the 80s it was pretty hot in the house. She said she still doesn't and it might be difficult to find any little AC units around there right now.

I was one of those trying to calm the waters during the big to-do the other night, and I'm glad to see people talking about it because it was like no other angry conversation I've seen here. Some of the hate and anger I read was close to Brian's and that's why I was so upset.
Carol, and Jack, You are simply wonderful people and it all ran away with you, and it was visible. Beating yourselves up is futile because it's happened to all of us, and I, for one, don't intend to go back and say any more mea culpas.
To tell you the honest truth, after a while I realized that I wasn't sure which side anyone was taking - I realized that I was finding sense in some of what everyone was saying. It seems to me the basis of the argument got pushed down to the bottom of the pile and the ability to read carefully was doomed.
Does that make sense? It seemed to me that you weren't even answering each other, but voices you have heard sometime in the past. Once that little fire was lit, the anger was at others, people not here.
I hope nobody stays away and that nobody censors himself or herself. You really are important people.
Darklord, If you are there, it seemed to me you were trying to choose between whoever and whomever. It looked as if you were saying, :...everyone knew what you meant; _____ (whoever, whomever) doesn't.
My opinion, for what it's worth, is that whoever is the correct choice. It is the subject of the predicate doesn't, which makes a subordinate clause serving as the direct object of the predicate ____, which has an understood subject 'you.'
That may sound ridiculous, but I'm pretty darn sure I'm right. Actually, I know I am.
And if no one reads this tonight, I'm re-posting it tomorrow.

We got the results back from the flu test we did on one of the inmates that had the flu symptoms. It came back faster than the lab told me they thought it would. My intuition was correct, it was the swine flu.
The four that I think all had it got over it fast, much faster than the regular flu, even the guy with HIV, who was the one we tested. No more cases so far and that is a miracle since we have a lot of people stuffed in that place. Population right now is somewhere around 1250 inmates.
No one freaked out, except maybe a few in admin. The inmates were cool which surprised me. They sometimes love to over react.

Carol, Glad to hear that the swine flu wasn't as bad as the usual flu cases. Kgc posted an article yesterday that said it didn't do as well in humidity, so maybe that helped there in La. I was so surprised to hear it, because everything usually grows 'better' in humidity. Apparently not this particular virus.
