Rev. Wright Strikes Again

| | Comments (182)

How inconvenient for President Barack Obama that the preacher he used for political advantage in Chicago again surfaces to embarrass him. Let's be clear: Obama does not subscribe to Jeremiah Wright's demented ideas, but he definitely used the fiery preacher to establish a base for propelling his lofty ambitions. Now that Obama has outgrown Wright he can pretend it all never happened. (Is this fear of guilt by association the reason why Obama still hasn't picked a full-time church to attend in DC?)

  7. About the good Rev. Wright. Obama should keep doing what he is doing. Don't say anything. I know that he is lying when he denies his participation at Wrights church.

The R's will keep using this-just like they do the M L. thing with Pres. Clinton. He ignores them all. The would be the best thing for Obama to do also.

Hey RR. Tow things I do agree with you about that. I absolutley don't think that she is a concerned Mom. Just the opposite. She is just another politicians doing what they all do. Try to stay in the spot light anyway that they can. Family-or no family:

About that bridge. It is my favorite: I wish that I had the $ to buy it. The Architect and his family devoted their whole lives to getting it built. That is a great read for anyone imo. Can I pay U in pesos please. :-)) Been enjoying your sense of humor lately. Thanks

  11. Renee-

Your making me smile. Just like I did a yesterday. I was on I 94 going to a meeting with some one from Ohio. On the way up there-just short of the Ohio-Indiana state line. ( It was raining pretty good) on the right were I was sitting there was a little Winery.

I had a big picture of a half filled glass of wine. There was also a big tent that was over some picnic tables. I imagined meeting you and Rick there and tasting the diff kinds of Vino.

My friend asked me what I was grinning about. I brushed it of and said nothing. I did not get the name and did not remember it on the way back cos we were discussing the meeting and all. If I had I would have included that in here. Cheers anyway Chicita!

  12. "Is this fear of guilt by association the reason"

I'll take the first half of that sentence, :-)

I don't think Obama would openly admit it, but my guess is he'd be a bit gun shy about his selection of a new church. Definitely some research is in order. I heard a news source out of Chicago (R Martin ?) say as much.

  14. Chloe, continued,

There's no need to apologize. I like you, too. And, the republican way of tossing anyone and everyone into the "commie" pigeon hole was one of the things that irked the hell out of me back in the 70s, when I was still one of those miserable sunzabeaches, myself.

Those republicans who want to be treated fairly today, would have done well, while it was still in their power to be moral suaders, to have modeled the role for the rest of us. It's too late now. They may not be in hell yet, but they are in a state of limbaugh, er, limbo. As with any death, the death of the republicans' political power prevents them from repenting and recanting their bad behavior.

republicans set the tone of the 'political dialogue' since 1980, and thouroughly trained most Americans in the crude arts of hard-nosed, tough-talking, unforgiving, unrepentent finger-pointing and name-calling. republicans modeled the role from lee atwater to the newt to rude rudy. If republicans don't like what America's 'political dialogue' became under their long tutelage, they shall have plenty of time to get used to it. An eternity, I hope.

  19. Gawd no xrepub! And leave Democrats at the wheel without opposition? Such aspirations fuel people like the consevative writer below.

I found the following fascinating in what it reveals about the progress of conservativism. It helps show how extremes can converge.

    http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/2009/06/026560print.html

IN all fairness, Jihad Watch admirably follows all the news related to the abuses of jihadist movements and our reaction to it. If you think most of the facts here are lies, then you would be wrong. They serve an important venue of related events along the jihadist front. JW does have their slant.

In this link above a jihad watch writer relates his opinion of the jihadist movement globally to a conservative position paper that reminds me of what I read the fifties were like. There were racist, isolationists that view government and foreign policy extension of empire. And remember there was a Goldwater wing growing and an Eisenhower that introduced integration to an awful lot of Southern Democrats.

What is strange in this link is how both Islamists and Liberals are placed on the "commie" side of this spectrum by this conservative who blasts NEOCON like the faithful on the Left. A Liberal would facism and Fundementalism on the COnservative side. Therin lies the confusion.

ANd this is a strange thing. It shows us where the curved space of politics meet and both extremes of absolutism and relativity blur together as does much of their reasoning process……

You'll be too late for the hockey game, which will be in Detroit tonight, and won't involve any Canadian teams anyway.

Upstream at Ottawa, PM Steven Harper will be looking over new schemes for preventing Canada from having a parliamentary government. He might be interested to hear from a Yank about how 'we' derailed government in 1998 - 9. In an address to the nation Harper said that the Stimulus Package was having a sautory effect on the economy. Meanwhile 1,600 mayors and provincial leaders claim they haven't seen the money yet. You could warn him about the dangers of saying you sent rescuers to New Orleans, when in fact, you only thought about whether you might do so within the next week or two. Your 'voice of experience' could save Canada from eventually having a real government.

  27. Further, Mr. Maxtrue,

The republican party does not count as opposition. An opposition party must have :

    1. some power, beyond the mere ability to caterwaul, be they ever so alarmist and noisome.

    2. a program of their own that 'shadows' the actual government actions as a proposed alternative.

The republicans fail to be an opposition on both counts. They are insignificant, and any appearance to the contrary is an illusion at best. Pay no attention to the men behind the curtain.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | June 12, 2009 8:24 PM

  49. Please understand that I wrote this quickly and have niot edited it or reviewed it so it's way too wordy and full of typos. I don't have time. I'm not trying ti pick a fight but disagree with some of the stuff I've been reading and just want to speak my mind. Sorry - I think I broke my own record for length.

I'm off to sit at my sister's house while she goes on a Sierra Club backpacking trip in Yosemite - gitting teeth.
She has a 40" bravia and I don't -get my drift?

So gonna have my say and get out of the line of fire. I think that:

    1. Letterman was wrong in what he said because it was stupid and not funny and not even relevant.

    2. He really really dislikes Palin and disapproves of her and the way he thinks she has treated her family.

    3. The terms "slutty" and "knocked up" and "flight attendant" were sexist and two of them are almost meaningless today. I hate the one "knocked up."

    4. That's the only sexist thing about his "joke."

    5. Palin is at the root of it all. She trotted her family out as validation of her status of a family values person and a good Christian. The fact that she has been proven to not be so is , I think, pretty self-evident. What a mess her family is ! Her validation is open to criticism - she made it public. She told the world she thinks sex before marriage is wrong and sinful - she brought her daughter out as an example. "But we love her in spite of her sin."

    6. If you want to believe she loves her family, go ahead.
Maybe she does, but I think it's a cold calculating love.
My poor confused gentle mother may have been inept, but, my god, she never would have exposed us and our mistakes to even the neighbors, much less the world. I think she's a royal bitch.

    7. She also must have known what Levi Johnson and his family were like - what a poor political choice to put it all in the public eye. If she had left them out of it, it would have been mentioned, yes, but left alone.

    8. I think her clothers are great, esp that red leather jacket, but I hate that she wears them. The reason for the word slut is that they are so glamourous they decided to accent her beauty instead of her gravitas ( now there's a non -sequitor for you.) A slut was a girl who dressed to call attention to herself, always over-dressed. By and large they probably just didn't know how to fit in, poor things. That's what Letterman is getting to - remember Marilyn Monroe in the Prince and the Showgirl? Letterman's guests almost all dress like sluts (the old-fashioned term) and he accepts that is what the world is now. He can't stand her, tho, and it comes out. She wants to be a world leader, not a starlet, and shoud look like one.

    9. Her first comment was perfect re Letterman. She should have left it there - now they've suggested he might molest her second daughter. They're enjoying this too much. Gross.

    10. NOW THIS IS IMPORTANT and I hope if you've just scrolled down so far, you'll look at it.
The most sexist thing I've come across so far in all of this is the comments I've read here by you guys saying Letterman would have a broken jaw. That is ridiculous.
I don't want men to defend me with their fists if they think I've been insulted or offended. I think most women dread that kind of thing. I think it's probably the real reason why I never let myself married a couple of men I really cared for in Houston. That's where I first saw a man hit a woman - knocked her to the ground.
It was a very normal reaction in Houston for men to make moves on a woman and her date to cok his fist and talk about what he was gonna do. I hope Houston has changed, but that was the way men, and nice men, thought was tight. Please, if I'm being assaulted with fists or weapons, go right ahead and help me. If it's just a loud-mouthed jerk, let me walk away.

I understand the love that makes you and other guys want to hurt someone who hurts your loved ones, but if we want to be treated as sensible and grown-up people, you can't beat people up and get violent over our supposed injured feelings.

Oh, yeah, as far as men not being treated as badly as this, really? How about Dickhead Cheney, or prick?
Those are pretty pejorative and all masculine. I do think sometimes the treatment women pols get is worse, but the big thing about Hillary was the dismissal of her ideas and worh.

  52. I may get in trouble for this one. As much as I dislike the term "knocked up" every time I see it, it reminds me of an old joke.

A pregnant woman absent mindedly steps off a curb into the path of a truck causing the driver to slam on the brakes hard just stopping shy of hitting her. She looks up startled as he leans out the window and says,
"Lady, you can get knocked down too!"

  55. I really don't see how anyone can claim to be able to read Ms. Palin's mind. Now if you are a psychic then maybe. It could be that she parades her family out in public because she is proud of them like most parents are.

Even when kids make a mistake, mom and dad are still proud of their them. Kids do make mistakes. It is not that unusual for a teenager to get pregnant before she is married. Teenagers are having sex and probably most aren't using any kind of protection.

Actually having your pregnant teenage daughter out there in public more demonstates that the idea of abstinance before marriage is a little unrealistic.

I don't have any kids but if my Maggie poops on the carpet I am still proud of her. It was probably my fault for not getting her outside sooner.

  61. We should all be pathological users of people.

Remember - he was a "community organizer" - even though some use the term to belittle Barack.

But I think helping and educating poor people on how to not get taken advantage of by the man is a pretty admirable thing to do - and very Republican (is the stupid red and blue dialogue those idiots in Washington have cooked up) all that personal responsibility stuff.

It is inane to assign qualities to the parties. Like only the Democrats care about education and civil rights - and the Right is stong on security and hates taxes.

Excuse me - but Washington DC should be the pursuit of ideas. We pay them to live a pretty cushy lifestyle to spend all their waking moments on figuring this shit out!! Not to be realty stars in the MSM.

But for men protecting women. I'm a very peaceful person and have only been in a handful of fights my entire life. One of the few times I've been absolutely incensed and ready to tear someone apart was when I heard a guy knocking around a woman friend of mine in the apartment upstairs from me.

She met me at the door and stopped me and I didn't pursue it, and that was her choice. But the instinctive feeling in me to hurt him is something I don't think men will ever get over. It's just part of the instinct of preservation of the species.

    ct,

It doesn't help that children today are being flooded with hormones either in water or dairy products and are physically maturing earlier and earlier. Then they are flooded with sexual images on billboards, in magazines, television and movies. Their music is filled with sexual references and their conversation and peer group pressure is all aimed towards merging at way too early an age. Then there is lack of parental involvement courtesty of both parents (if they are lucky enough to have both) working.

The ones that survive or who don't have their lives permanently messed up at too early an age will eventually be older and wiser, but it won't be because they had any help getting there.

  67. The secualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days - because the media is constantly reaching new lows.

We are still getting used to this information overload.

And although the sad stories are endless - women are also experiencing greater and greater rights all over the world - led by our example. And I think HRC will make huge strides over the next decade.

Did you see all those Iranian women on the streets - change is coming. And there is nothing the pols can do to stop it.

(I am off to the movies. Going to see The Hangover - speaking of new lows ; ) Gotta see what all the buzz is about - and a movie is a good way to avoid a real hangover.

I had to tell the class I burned my neck trying to iron my blouse with it still on and ended up with a second degree burn on my neck. It was too much trouble to take off the blouse, iron a kink out of the collar and then have to retie this little silk belt I had on.

I would rather my class think I was an idiot than think I was a slut. OK

  70. Bethy

I guess Im the sexist one that would break Letterman's jaw for him.

A couple of things. I have been out with women that someone has made a play for-or was trying to flirt with them. It is a little annoying-nothing more to me.

I have even told one that was flirting back to go and get acquainted with the other guy. I figured that he saved me a lot of time. I left the restaurant and went out by myself for the night. I have no problem with that sort of thing.

I even thanked the guy on my way out. I don't know what she did or did not do-I thought myself lucky that I did not get to know her.

Bethy You go on to say-

"I understand the love that makes you and other guys want to hurt someone who hurts your loved ones, but if we want to be treated as sensible and grown-up people, you can't beat people up and get violent over our supposed injured feelings."

We have had different life experiences. I have had to defend against all types of things. I have been jumped while walking to the park by some "spic haters" I have had to watch and protect my two younger brother from harm.

After moving to a neighborhood by Midway Ari port. We were the only Mexican family in a very large part of town. I had to protect my sisters also from very vile name calling, Physical harm. etc.

Once when we were kids. A neighbor down the street-same block took my brother Ricks bike and stomped on the wheels. He broke all of the spokes .

I went into his house while he and his family was eating dinner. I demanded that he go and buy a new wheel. He laughed at me-so did his wife. He pushed me out of his house. I came back with a baseball bat. Broke his leg. He gave me $ to fix the bike. I did not take it. He had to fix it. He did the next day on crutches.

My Sister Maria never felt that I was being sexist or an animal for defending her against vile name calling. If it was not defended it would have been worse for her.
even in the nicest hoods-you can't show weakness. It will only get worse. You do have to pick the time to tolerate- the time not too. After a while there were never any problems. The neighbors all got along with us. They even understood the difference of defense. Protecting your family. and self respect.

Bethy- I once had a High school History teacher bang my head against the lockers in the hall way. He did not like my version of General Custard. He would rip up my test papers in front of my face when no one was around.
Some of these things are very mild in comparison to some other things that have happened to me. 1968 riots were no fun in the Marines for me. The names did not bother me.

But to turn the cheek would have invited a lot of physical harm-pr worse. I had to sleep in a diff bed every night for a while. A visiting Marine slept in my bed. He was stabbed.

It has been over 25 years now that there hasn't been any situations of these. And I have ignored-laughed off 90% of intents to ridicule me. minimize my humanity. When I first moved into my house here in the near suburbs.
One of the neighbors and his wife welcomed us to the hood. The wife gave Judy some flowers. The husband and I talked for the firs few weeks. Then he asked me what nationality I was. He never talked to me again. I had a great time waving to him and calling out his name after that.
You see. He did not bother me at all (his hate) but if he would have said some stupid hateful thing like Letterman said.

Im guilty. I would have busted his jaw. I can be very kind. I can be very protective of my family and friends. Me I don't care. Believe me I heard it all. Felt the hatred. Smelled the fear. I have also been afraid. Felt hatred toward others.

Now I feel great love for all us all. Even the People in a part of the world that I have never heard of. But I would like to keep the right to defend my family and friends. I would like to tell you this. Words have hurt me many-many time more than anything else. Words do matter. They should have a consequence. I probably would have asked for an apology first in real life. The second time that he said something stupid. What?

This type of things are not an intellectual problem to me. They are not to be tolerated. There is a time for passiveness.
. There is a time for family honor and protection.

What ever you say next is ok-but I won;t answer. There is plenty that I said that one can take to apply as an answer.

  71. Solar,
I figure we're all pretty much what we have to be, given our particular DNA and the set of circumstances life has dealt us. When we were young, there wasn't much we could do to control those circumstances, so it's nice when we are adults and we can figure out ways to do just that.

There's not anything we can do to change the hardships in our past, we can't make the past go away. The only thing we can do is adjust our thinking and perception of what happened, then move on and do the best we can. A tough beginning though, can really make you appreciate the present.

I do think it's important to let it all go though, and to make things the way we wish they had always been.

  73. You know Obama and his wife are great role models for husband and wife and mother and father. As an AA man, Obama needs to take every opportunity he can to teach other men that there is more to being a man/father than just using his penis to fertilize the crops. And I have heard him speak to this before but he should do it more often. People who he can influence are watching.

I see so many AA men in jail who are very confused about the the role of a man in a family. The didn't have a father in theirs. They feel that being a man is demonstrated by how many women that are out there having their babies.

I had a young 18 year old AA man come to medical one day and his main concern was that he hadn't been able to get any women pregnant yet. I think he ended up being very sorry he came in with that complaint.

My head spun around a few times, green stuff came out of my mouth and I told him that his first concern better be getting out of prison, then getting a job, then finding a good relationship and then when he could support one worry about getting a woman pregnant.

Michelle can do the same for the women who allow themselves to be used in this way. Allow their men to drop in for sex, bounce the baby a couple of times, share the food stamp meals and then go out and hang with their home boys. The next day it's the next baby's mama.

Solar, I don't think you should ever be passive.
Honesty and communication are important. You can tell someone you don't agree with what they said, or let them know you find it offensive, without being violent about it. Not holding things in is important too. The main trouble I get myself into is miscomprehending someones intention. Sometimes saying something can clear things up.

  83. The need to defend your family. The need to shelter them from harm. Is innate in all of us. Just as Morals are. It would be immoral not too.

New meaning to "cell phone?" I've been hearing that inmates are "reaching out and touching someone" via wireless phones...most of which are supplied by corrupt guards. Have you run into that? Yes there are corrupt security guards. Most are just people hired off the streets and trained. They do have to go through psychological inventories and lie detector tests before they are hired but some still end up getting corrupted by these experts at manipulation.

He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven....The higher animals have no religion. 107. Don,

I think of the medical department as the only place in the jail/prison that is somewhat the inmate's shelter from the storm. They are not often treated with any respect in any other area of most jails/prisons. As long as their behavior warrants it, I insist that we treat them with respect.

Remember that most of these incarcerated men and women are someone's mother, father, brother, sister, child etc. Many just chose the wrong path. Looking at some of their life experiences it is not hard to see how that could have happened. Some are just bad to the bone but most are not.

  110. Thanks Carol. That's an accusation I've heard for years. No judgement, but to me the nurturing nature of nurses might make them more vulnerable.

After reading my previous comment I was thinking I've had the strangest things happen in my life.

This SVP was being held post incarceration in the state mental hospital. This is kind of a supra-legal move (and I'm sure warren will correct my description) because they're not currently charged with anything and have already served their sentence. The state hopes to keep them off the streets permanently.

This person had forged his own release documents and somehow gotten them to a girlfriend on the outside so she could mail them into the hospital admin office as legal papers. They were badly forged and immediately caught.

The prosecutor, and in my opinion the judge, were very motivated to bring real criminal convictions on this guy.

He was found guilty of all 9 or 10 counts, a verdict that appeared to shock even the prosecutor, as one act was somehow split into two counts. He was getting more violent with each offense so I was glad he was convicted, but what I took as the bias of the judge shocked me. This has been my one and only court case, because I usually move too often to get called.

  112. Sorry Carol, I was just commenting on the people being conned into special favors. I was part of a prison visitation group that would visit and just listen, or play a game of cards. I was one of the few people that would go into the state mental hospital. I've also worked with homeless programs. I've never had an incident, and I think a lot of that has to do with treating people with respect, not lecturing but listening, not falling for a story but not judging either.

I wonder what evangelicals would think of this story?

Some even have an accident that may not have even been avoidable but because someone died and they were drunk, they are quilty of vehicular homicide. Very unlucky. You may look down your noses at these people but you must think.... "there but for the grace of God go I"

  157. I've kinda enjoyed playing the Devil's advocate lately. And Devil, don't you get used to this, ya hear me.

I listened to Matt interviewing Palin on the Today Show last night. He definitely sounded hostile. He was trying to take up for Letterman. Palin was holding her own.

Imus didn't get that kind of support when he made the dumb remarks that got him in trouble. What was the difference? Was it that Imus's victims were young black females (no one wanted to touch that with a ten foot pole) and Palin is a older white female politician who many liberals don't like? I really don't know.

It is interesting thought that over the last year, and for the first time, it was kind of a plus being black. That's not a bad thing. It really helped Obama. Except that being black only seems to be a plus if you are a rich celebrity. If you are poor and sitting in a jail cell it definitely isn't a plus. You are doomed.

One of the big differences in who is in jail and who is not is.... who has lots of money and a very good lawyer. And that goes for white or black. It ain't exactly justice.

Hopefully Warren has a few beers and pizza under his belt now, has let his hair down and I can have some fun with him today.

  161. Carol...
I think you are missing the point some of us on this blog are making.... we aren't talking about Palin's politics.... we are talking about the choice she's made to put her family in the public spotlight....

and in that regard I agree with everything Bethy said about her last night....
Can you give me a name of any of Bush twins' boyfriends?.... can you give the name of one of Chelsea's boyfriends?... Biden had his family come out on the stage with him at the convention to celebrate his candidacy of vice president.... can you name one of them?... (and no fair going to google)...

I'm 54 and have been interested in politics since the age of 12.... I've never seen a politician use their family the way Palin has.... I find the fact that Levi Johnson has become a household name disgusting.... and yes, the media can be take some of the blame.... but it was Palin herself that started this whole thing....

    once again.... just my 2cents...

Don't you remember that they were over there in Alaska digging through the library and garbage cans looking for dirt on Palin. Hiding that crew wouldn't have helped it would have looked worse.

Like I said, Palin wouldn't be my choice for anything but I only think that fair is fair. And we did get lots of info on the cute little Obama girls. It was a joy to have it. Fortunately they are too young to get in any trouble yet. There is still time since I think Obama will be around for their teenage years. Heaven help those poor girls.

I agree with you Carol. I don't see it so much as her using them as I see them being used by the media. and despite the fact that I don't like the Bushes.... I thought they did a very good job trying to keep the twins out of the news....

I don't see this as a liberal vs conservative thing.... nor do I see it as as female vs male thing.... I see it as a politician... who just happens to be a female... as making a very poor and cold choice....

and that's my last word on the subject... I will agree to disagree with you....
