Only Disaster Saves Cheney Legacy

So, we finally got the celebration from Iraqis that Dick Cheney predicted six years ago. Except that a spontaneous outpouring greeted the departure of U.S. troops from major cities, not their arrival as "liberators" in the way that the former vice president predicted at the start of the war.

6a00d8341c4df253ef010536829a19970c-800wi.jpgThus, it makes sense that Cheney was a tad grumpy yesterday. Cheney suggested that our troop withdrawals could make a "waste" of the sacrifices to date if Iraqis cannot hack it on their own.

You'd think he would want to claim credit for this development and portray it as a sign of success for what the Bush administration put in place.

But once again, Cheney is covering his bases in case everything falls apart. He's warned that Obama has made us less safe, preserving an "I-told-you-so" stance in case we are attacked again. Now, if Baghdad goes up in flames he'll get boasting rights.

Funny how the only way for Cheney to look good is for America and its friends to suffer.

  4. Ping,

I think Craig's point is worth making. Cheney comes off as rooting for America to fail, which in this day and age, seems to be the standard position of whichever party is not in power. Maybe it's always been like that, but in more innocent times (my innocence) I thought both parties were interested in successful governance and they just disagreed on how to get there.

Warren, milk is usually marked with a 'sell by' date which allows for about ten days of use before it turns nasty. Eggs are good for three weeks after the expiration date. Meat is kind of iffy--but, then I don't eat much of it. And then, it's only from sellers whom I trust.

The other common items like bread, rolls, crackers, etc., generally have a 'best by' date. Those dates, especially for things in cans and boxes (that you can't visually check for freshness) I generally observe.

In reality, I think very little unsold food makes it to the landfill. It's either given to charities while it is still palatable and safe, or sold to processors who convert it to animal feed. So, if kitty gets sick...

Our dogs were really happy with Purina topped with homemade broth. We knew what they were eating.

  22. Coreen, a double thanks for your comments yesterday.

I was a city commissioner in a burg with unionized firefighters. We were tremendously dependent on their competence as Paramedics/EMTs, much more so than their abilities as firefighters. Each of our fire engines was dual-hatted as an ALS vehicle.

My campaign position was that our personnel, because of our tremendous dependence on them, should be compensated in the top quarter of the municipalities in our county; we wanted to attract and retain the best. New hires were generally drawn from the ranks of the department's volunteers.

Rather than having the city commission being involved in negotiations with the union, we had the chief along with the finance director and city attorney holding judgment. Generally they would reach an agreement which allowed the elected officials to continue expressing their love for department members even while some hard-nosed negotiations were going on.

Promotions through lieutenant were handled IAW with our union contract. Above lieutenant, it was by recommendation of the chief, through his commissioner to the entire commission.

  29. Flatus,

My intent was only my perspective that the reality of
life sometimes seems to be lost when events are
used--as in the Ricci case--for rank politics.

But for the nomination of Judge Sotomayor---
the facts of the Ricci case would not have had such exposure--& honestly as of this a.m. I am not sure
how the decision itself relates to the firefighters involved---am not sure if they get promotions, back pay, or if there is to be another test.

I did read the decision last evening & as Pogo stated
the Court took a pass on any consititutional challenge
& narrowly decided using the federal civil rights title
vii claim--it remanded it to the lower court--but as to
the remedy so far I am really not sure what will happen.

By the way the decision went through the entire process that led to the suit---& for those wondering
about the particulars of the test (though to my knowledge the actual test questons still have not been
released to the public) reading the decision provides
a pretty thorough explanation of how & what the testing
    involved.

  38. Patsi,

Here's the decision's discussion of the testing:

"In order to fit the examinations to the New Haven
Dept., IOS (company hired to create tests) began the test-design process by perfroming job analyses to identify the tasks, knowledge, skills, & abiliites that are essential for the lieutenant & captain positions.

IOS interviewed incumbent captains & lieutenants & their supervisors. They rode with & observed other on-duty officers.

sing information from those interviews & ride-alongs, IOS wrote job-analysis questionnaires & administered them to most of the incumbent battalion chiefs, captains, & lieutenants in the Dept. At every state of the job analyses, IOS, by deliberate choice, oversampled minority firefighters to ensure that the
results--which IOS would use to develop the examinations--would not unintentionally favor white candidates.

For each test, IOS compiled a list of training manuals, Dept. procedures, other materials to use as sources for the test questions. IOS presented the proposed
sources to the New haven fire chief & asst fire chief for their approval. Then, using the approved sources, IOS drafted a multiple-choice test for each position.

Each test had 100 questions, as required by CSB rules,& was written below a 10th grade reading level. After IOS prepared the tests, the City opened a 3-month study period. It gave candidates a list that identified the source material for the questions, including the specific chapters from which the questions were taken.

IOS developed the oral examinations as well. These concentrated on job skills & abilities. Using the job-analysis information, IOS wrote hypothetical situations to test incident-command skills, firefighting tactics, interpersonal skills, leadership, & management ability, among other things. Candidates would be presented with these hypotheticals & asked to respond before a panel of three assessors.

At the city's insistence (because of controversy surrounding previous examinations) all the assessors came from outside CT. IOS submitted the assessors' resumes to city officials for approval. They were
battalion chiefs, asst chiefs, & chiefs from depts of similar sizes to New haven. 66% of the panelists were minorities, & each of the nine 3-member assessment panels contained 2 minority members
    (1 white, 1 hispanic, 1 african american)

IOS trained the panelists for several hours on the day before it administered the examinations, teaching them how to score the candidates' responses consistently using checklists of desired criteria."

New Haven,(Mayor) DeStafano acknowledged in a City Hall press conference, ultimately will have to 'in some fashion' certify the promotional lists. He said in hindsight, that despite the ruling, he would not have done anything differently.

Standing outside the federal courthouse where a judge first threw out the lawsuit in 2006, fire Lt. Matthew Marcarelli, the top scorer on the captain's test, said all the plaintiffs wanted was what they earned.

One of his harshest critics, who goes by the moniker "Colorado Bob" said "I don't know whether there would be or not," he said. "There could be, and there probably should be. The media also don't spend enough time telling about how well the economy went during the last two years of the Bush administration or how Bush fought tirelessly to preserve and protect the Constitution for the 7 years he was in office after 9/11- they just focus on how bad the economy is now and on those whiny terrorists who are claiming their rights are not extended to them while they are being held indefinitely without charges being brought.

Never seems to occur to him--dishonest man that he is--that between our military and the Iraqi population there are many many graves that attest to the appalling failure of those policies.

ACCKKKK!!! Where are my manners? Good afternoon, all.

"I stumbled across this on the intertubes:

On one occasion, I asked a Hopi woman at Munqapi if she selected only the biggest corn kernels of all one color for planting her blue maize. She snapped back at me, “It is not a good habit to be too picky... we have been given this corn -- small seeds, fat seeds, misshapen seeds -- all of them. It would show that we are not thankful for what we have received if we plant just certain ones and not others” (Nabham 1983 pp. 7)

  80. Craig, I think it is quite honest to say that more than a few Liberals thrilled at ANYTHING disastrous during the Bush administration. The chaos in Iraq was a Godsend to Liberals and “IRAQ IS LOST” became the political mantra that carried Obama into the White House.

I remember, here, there was little outrage that Obama could not even admit the "surge" worked or that McCain deserved ANY credit. The chaos in Pakistan, which again, Liberals were thrilled about, WAS ALL BUSH's fault. Damn that Musharraf. I don’t know about you, but for me the results were quite predictable, not any disaster lust.

One of the toughest things Liberals were forced to swallow during the campaign was the GOP claim that "we weren’t hit under Bush". Tell me the truth, would some vocal Liberals wish that claim had vanished during the campaign?

As for Cheney, although I am not a partisan supporter, he at least in this account NOT GLOATING OVER OUR "VICTORY" because of the Iraqi reaction and ground realities. He doesn’t seem to be inventing several serious problems which today the DOD confirmed. There has been an up tick in bombings which will likely increase. Why should Cheney be happy and join the everything is wonderful in Iraq crowd?

As for this glorious mission accomplished, the Iraqis aren't tossing us flowers after the tough sacrifice we made. That is a bit irritating. I find it ungracious as now Iraqis have the chance of Democracy and life without Saddam. Thomas Ricks says we will have to provide security for quite a while more, so Cheney is being consistent, yes? He doesn't trust that in-fighting won't start up. Liberals and media pumped the chaos in Pakistan and Iraq in a political struggle.

And guess what other likely thing will happen in Iraq besides AQ and sectarian differences? By most expert opinion this morning across the internet, Ahmadinejad will continue to causing trouble. To call this very predictable event weeks away “hoping for disaster” is completely wrong. That would be like a weather man calling for storms this weekend, hoping for disaster. Frankly, I wish the forecast was rosy.

If Iraq can stay on track and resist Iranian meddling, if Afghanistan can be stabilized, we will have significant leverage against the Iranian regime: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/world/story/71009.html

But right now in Iraq there is this mess: http://ncr-iran.org/content/view/6634/1/ This is a crime Obama seems to be walking away from. Will Hillary? Is this our gift to Ahmadinjad? It makes no sense, or does it?

Despite Michael Jackson and Sanford, Iran has not gone away. Iran’s judicial leader threatens to execute protesters and show them no mercy, but thousands stand up: http://ncr-iran.org/content/view/6636/1/

Strange other news absent some real analysis on south of the border. It appears Clinton’s first reaction on Honduras showed the side of her I remember. Yet the loud outrage.

If the Congress, SCOTUS and the DOD called our President’s action unconstitutional (and it was), would we call the President’s removal, a coup? At first, Hillary would not call it such, but Obama did very quickly. Well, far more quickly than Iranian comments. And I am talking about Honduras Constitution, not exactly our means for removal. Do any papers here lament the trend towards lifetime leaders? Did the NYT gloat over the Argentinean election?

Does there seem more outrage by Liberals over Honduras than the reaction over Iran? And look how Chevez threatens military intervention and demands a return to Democracy. His kind of Democracy? Sure sounds like those Liberal amplification organs are blowing us some hypocrisy again.

Just like there present coverage of Iraq.

  85. This is the way it works :

Whenever a republican Nero is in the White House, cheney, limpaugh, pong, and truthinrealty all say that the President knows all, because he reads all the secret intelligence reports. Further, The Commander in Chief in Wartime can do no wrong, and anyone who disagrees with Him hates America and is allied with Satan.

When a Democrat is in the White House, cheney, limp, pong, and tinrealty all say, the President doesn't know a dam' thing, his intelligence reports are written by red moles, and his policies are destroying the country. Further, anyone who cheers for the White House team is allied with Satan.

It's kinda weird the way cheney, limp, pong, and realty always paint republican presidents as a cross between Julius Caesar, victor over the Celtic terrorists (See the Fair and Balanced "Gallic Wars"), and Solomon, who wouldn't let a Mom to get away with killing her baby.

It's kinda weird the way these folks always paint Democratic Presidents as a cross between Dr. Moriarty (See Doyle's 'The Final Problem') and Goofy (Mickey Mouse's much funnier, and shamefully underpaid, sidekick).

Truth, you are ridiculous. How many terrorists are ther at Gitmo? If the past is an indicator of the present, not many. I don't condone or defend those practices under Obama any more than under Bush. Bush started the heinous deprivation from people picked up willy-nilly by bounty hunters for $5k per of those rights deemed by the founders of our country as endowed by the Creator and unalienable . The prisoners at Gitmo need to be either tried or released, period. If we haven't got enough evidence to try them, why are we still holding them? The answer is not found under the O's, it's found under the B's. It's an unconscionably bullshit system resting on a foundation of dishonesty and perpetuated by the unreasoning fear of guys with brown skin and funny names. If Obama and Congress had any integrity, it would cease to exist in the very near term. It's a part of the legacy Cheney is out ther etrying to make grow. It's a moral embarassment that is contrary to everything this country was founded on, but Cheney (and Bush as well) is as completely amoral as an individual can be.

    Good observation Horse. Anymore?

Xrepub, glad I now know how it works.

Want to keep it simple? Bush removed Saddam and now Iraqis have a chance for Democracy. We shall see if Liberal Intellectuals who claim that Iran has no interest in destabilizing Iraq are right. If not, I will post quotes from Juan Coles among others. Given the degree Democrats base their expectations on speculation, it is strange none will paint me a picture of Life with Saddam.

Other simple fact: Democrats said Iraq was Lost. Obama was a main cheerleader in this camp.

If you think mission accomplished is today, you would be smoking the same stuff as Maher and Stone. These were the same bone-heads that lambasted mission accomplished, the orginal lesson. Guess what? Afghanistan, Pakistan and even Iraq are all in play. And guess who plays a big role? The Mullahs and their proxies. Still Stones great sory isn't anything like the Stoning, but rather a movie that shows how stupid Reagam was. Bravo.

Another simple fact: the best peaceful pressure we can bring upon our adversaries who have little use of Democracy or Human Rights, is the advance of Liberal Democracy. You know, the stuff Jefferson promoted. Sometimes this transition to LIberty is messy, takes a long time and necessary, especially when the alternatives are an unacceptable threat to our own LIberty.

One more fact: the game being played in all these places involve the same forces that make an agreement between Palestinians who war with each other and the Israelis impossible. Saddam would have loved to keep that game a live wire.

That media does not laud Bush's march towards Democracy in Iraq despite the mistakes and costs, speaks volumes and Jax's comments is an undercurrent, to even our approach to Iran and Afghanistan. Craig rather took a pass on this long observed subject with his different headline on Cheney.

Just think of how much more the Iranian people would have suffered under the martial law of endless conflict with Saddam. The two countries would have wound the Middle East into a far more explosive mixture.

  95. Max, neither Iran nor Iraq is considered a strong ally of the US, and neither is on our continent, as Honduras has been and is, which may account for the interest in the Honduran coup and Obama's taking a position on it. We weren't hit under Bush? Really? 9/11 aside, we've been engaged in 2 wars under Bush. I think the 3,444 dead and 31,342 wounded in action US servicemen and were hit - or don't they, whose numbers now exceed the dead and wounded of 9/11, count?

Force is the only thing that is understood and respected over there. I think we should have left both countries as soon as regime change took place and let them both dive into chaos. I suppose that cheney's dirty money is mostly in the United Arab Emirates, along with halliburton, whose other executives allowed him to swindle stockholders out of $40 M!LL!ON in bonus money (under cheney's inspired leadership, halliburton's losses were $8 B!LL!ON - a figure which was hidden from the SEC and markets during cheney's tenure as Chief Looting Officer).

flatus, I getcha, but my understanding is that the outgoing (literally - in a plane in his pajamas) president Zelaya wasn't exactly succeeded lawfully. I don't know the details about his attempts to change the constitution through a non binding referendum so that he could continue to serve, but hey, we've changed our constitution to prevent that, only not through a plebicite. Bill O' has beaten all the other show collectively in that 8 PM time slot. That has to be so embarrassing for those other cable news shows, whoever they are. Who's that guy Keith something or another, and Matthews? Has Matthews ever broke 1,000,000 viewers barrier, ever? Has Matthews ever surpassed 250,000 viewers ever? How do they stay on the air?

  141. Posted by: maxtrue | June 30, 2009 1:49 PM : "Oh, now Bush was at fault over 9/11 before anyone really wanted to do anything. Ask Bill Clinton. Look at the crap even Democrats gave him over Afghanistan strikes."

    1. The bushcheneyrumsfeld Administration turned down the recommendations of the Rudman/Hart Commission on terrorism, because it would cost a few dollars. This act of ignorance and parsimony was perpetrated by bush cheneyrumsfeld despite the newt's and James Schlesinger's membership in the committee and their concurrence in the conclusions of the report. To the extent that the babybush team blew off the 1/31/01 Rudman/Hart report that hardening cockpits was vital to American security, yes 9/11 was the fault of bushcheneyrumsfeld.

    2. To the extent that the babybush crowd blew off both Clinton WH and CIA reports about the dangers of bin laden and alqaeda, yes 9/11 was the babybus crowd's fault.

    3. I remember very well the attacks made on Clinton by republicans after his attempts to destroy bin ladin and his camps in Afghanistan and Sudan through cruise missiles. rightwingers demeaned Clinton and the Navy for destroying the al Shifa (Arabic for Cornucopia) Pharmaceutical factory, which republicans called a Sudanese "dairy" . To the extent that republicans did not back the Clinton Administration effort to track down and destroy alqaeda 0n 8/20/98, they are at fault for 9/11/01

    4. To the extent that republicans used alqaeda attacks on the USS Cole and our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania to call Clinton weak, and to pump negative campaigns in '98 and 2000, rather than to fund a greater effort to find and destroy alqaeda, yes, republicans are at fault for 9/11. However, they spent more than $70 M!LL!ON on the Whitewater investigation and prosecution that led to an acquital. What great priorities republicans have.

Parenthetically, I predict that MN Guv Potholes Aplenty will announce soon that he won't certify Franken's election until after the SCOTUS ruling.

  145. " It is, rather, a crueler demographic point. The dirty little secret of conservative talk radio is that the average age of listeners is 67 and rising, according to [Jon Sinton, founding president of Air America] — the Fox News audience, likewise, is in its mid-60s: “What sort of continuing power do you have as your audience strokes out?”

Only dinosaurs listen to radio these days, and it’s doubtful many people under 50 even know AM radio exists, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the average age of right-wing radio listeners is 67. It’s also truly not shocking that this demographic is also predominantly male. According to a Pew study in February, 72 percent of Limbaugh’s elderly listeners are men and thus are statistically likely to “stroke out” sometime in Pres. Obama’s second term, assuming he wins one."

  146. Maxtrue,

You have to understand pogo never worked shift work, or if he did he has forgotten what it was like if something went wrong just after the other shift was relieved, and this is why he sees 9/11 as Bush's fault. It is just so much easier to pass the buck onto the relieving shift. He forgets Bush just relieved the prior shift and what has been going on that shift has yet to be been detected. So pogo gives Bill C a pass on 9/11, for the 9/11 terrorist who were let in before Jan 23, 2001, of the other attacks on US., WTC 1, USS Cole, African Embassies bombings, US military barracks. Liberal like to forget WTC 1 ever happened, and they don't consider the other attacks as attacks on the US as they didn't occur here on the homeland.

"The report discloses that the Federal Aviation Administration, despite being focused on risks of hijackings overseas, warned airports in the spring of 2001 that if "the intent of the hijacker is not to exchange hostages for prisoners, but to commit suicide in a spectacular explosion, a domestic hijacking would probably be preferable."

The report takes the F.A.A. to task for failing to pursue domestic security measures that could conceivably have altered the events of Sept. 11, 2001, like toughening airport screening procedures for weapons or expanding the use of on-flight air marshals. The report, completed last August, said officials appeared more concerned with reducing airline congestion, lessening delays, and easing airlines' financial woes than deterring a terrorist attack.

The Bush administration has blocked the public release of the full, classified version of the report for more than five months, officials said, much to the frustration of former commission members who say it provides a critical understanding of the failures of the civil aviation system. The administration provided both the classified report and a declassified, 120-page version to the National Archives two weeks ago and, even with heavy redactions in some areas, the declassified version provides the firmest evidence to date about the warnings that aviation officials received concerning the threat of an attack on airliners and the failure to take steps to deter it."

  184. Jax celebrates not our victory in Iraq, but a bombing. Anything to cling to the hate Bush mantra. Simply amazing...

XRepub, the Clinton adminstration had OBL and didn't wack him, Carter created OBL. Some people will stay on their blame game forever. The 2000 election didn't shift administration control to much later than usual. Bush kept many US security bosses in place and had the intelligence community functioned properly, a problem from the Clinton years, they might have done what XRepub suggests. I don't think that bipartisan commission blamed Bush, or even scolded him more than they did Clinton. Clinton has said many times that until 9/11 people just didn't understand the threat.

Some Liberals would rather forget the lessons and military spending porjected by this administration will reach new lows in the out years.

Obama ran early on a no to missile defense. Even as he touts our missile defense systems, he is still making major cuts. Should we have to strike against our adversaries with their new defense system, the Raptor is the best bet. The battle for Raptors is coming up.

It is amazing that on this day, media cannot bring themselves to pay tribute to Bush or even McCain. Obama banks heavily on Bush's generals. Don't think McChrystal is Obama's boy. Had Democrats gotten their way, the blood spilled in Iraq would have been in vain. At the start, people like Juan Coles predicted a decade battle for Iraq. Biden said only a partition would solve Iraq's problem. Clinton said that he expected Saddam would have to be removed sooner or later.

So you all can spin today how ever you wish. Celebrate the New LIberals in Franken and Buress.

And let's talk about Obama's first big blunder in the Middle East. He laid down an absolutist position in regard to settlements. He brushed off Netanyahu more than Assad or Ahmadinejad. I tried to explain that certain growth on specific settlements was always the US understanding. Just look at the formula for the Clinton Map. And the US always supported a Jewish State. Then Obama talked about doing nothing in regard to Iran until Netanyahu blinked. He never mentioned a Jewish State. He has yet to approave the request from Israel for missile defense systems.

Well Iran farted and Hamas after attacking Fatah fired at Egyptians and recenty helped the Mullahs beat Iranians. Now Obama has to PREDICTABLY back step. Egypt and the Saudis have pushed Iran to the top of the list. Iran proved after months of agressive action the futility of Obama's gesture line. As Obama returns to center, people like Maher and Stone, Kos and CommonDreams take aim at Obama the betrayer.

I suspect Democrats will find a way to turn victory in defeat unless Obama can find the right suit and steer them into common sense.

TiR, don't expect gratitude, some here seem more like Iraqis at times........

As Craig can see, some Democrats want disaster in Iraq more than Cheney.

  186. Clinton sent his former security czar into the secret archives and he stole information about pre 9/11 memos. I don't think Bush did that. Remember Burger? Had that been Libby, he would be in jail.

Make no mistake, Liberals were not thrilled by Desert Fox and did not care for Clinton's strikes on Afghanistan. Power blamed him for Rwanda and Somalia. Democrats wanted sanctions against Saddam to end. They said the sanctions did nothing until inspectors confirmed sanctions had worked.

Gee, I guess when Obama breaks his word and raises taxes, LIberals can blame this on Bush too.

The only way out is a vigorous economy. What the government is doing is not stimulating a real economic surge. But then economic failure of the O-team will also be blamed on Bush.

Obama has to fight both Parties. I hope he can do it....

  191. OK - I am playing the sexism card (ever though I usually steer clear of that subject like some avoid the number 13) - but I think a big part of the phenomena of Palin is cause she is female.

I know that might not sound like breaking news. But think back to when the Republican race just started. Or years before that or until just a couple of weeks before Sarah was selected. Before that - there was only one woman in the race. (And look how much attention and attacks she endured.)

I tell ya one thing. You sure was funny watch all those men - who would "never" vote for a woman as Commander in Chief - turn on their heels! ("well - hey she shoots shit and is xenophobic" etc.)

Anyways, the point i am trying to get at - is that one way to explain the nasty, slanderous coverage by her enemies - or the inspired devotion of her loyalists.

She just had so much attention. For two weeks it was all Palin - all-the-time. (And the GOP actually had a chance...)

That attention in this day and age is a pandora's box.

  193. MSNBC is somewhere in the ratings, but as you will sadly read, FOX rules the roost!!!

    http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/ratings/

Fox News Channel continued its ratings dominance in the just concluded second quarter. Compared to Q2 '08 FNC is up an astonishing 33% among Total Viewers and up 44% in the A25-54 demo in Total Day (Monday-Sunday). In primetime (Monday-Friday) the numbers are even more impressive: up 35% in Total Viewers and up 54% in younger viewers. FNC is on-track to have the highest rated year in the network's 13 year history.

In primetime, Fox News has more Total Viewers and younger viewers than MSNBC and CNN combined.

Fox News occupies the Top 10 spots on cable news among Total Viewers:

    8pm - O'Reilly Factor — 3,188,000
    9pm - Hannity — 2,341,000
    5pm - Glenn Beck — 2,053,000
    10pm - On the Record — 1,950,000
    6pm - Special Report — 1,889,000
    7pm - Fox Report — 1,757,000
    11pm - O'Reilly Factor — 1,579,000
    9am - America's Newsroom — 1,399,000
    4pm - Your World — 1,389,000
    3pm - Studio B — 1,169,000

Fox News is the #3 basic cable network in primetime - behind USA and TNT. CNN is #23 and MSNBC is #25.

"Total Viewers" doesn't mean a thing in ratings land. There is one thing and one thing only that advertisers want: 18 to 34 and sometimes 25-34 in two three hour periods 6 - 9 AM and 5 - 8 PM

The other major problem facing Nielsen is land lines versus cell phones. They have the same situation as pollsters in politics.

At least FOX will get good ratings as they cry out that the sky is falling because I government now wants to - gasp! - provide people with better access to healthcare, pass a stimulus to keep people working - especially ones in public service like teaches and cops - and pay to get shovel-ready projects moving. What a freaking horrible things for a government to do.

Republicans have the nerve to cry foul over spending money on domestic projects after they spent the last 8 years - blowing up buildings - just to put them back together a few years later. That's real efficient.

(And a lot of their spending wasn't even on the budget. I assume it was on the Bush/Cheney blackcard.)

I'm not sure I understand what your point has been for the last several hours in citing Nielsen ratings for Fox. Unless you are an advertiser, the numbers don't mean anything. So what are you saying? More people watch Fox? More people agree with O'Reilly? Well, more people than what -- watch MSNBC? Well, okay, so then what? It's still a very small number. As I said earlier, more people watched HBO's Hung. So what? It means nothing unless you are buying advertising...or are you making another point that is lost?

"Many experts believe health care reform was defeated in the early 90's by the infamous "Harry and Louise" ads. They featured actors sitting around a fake kitchen table, pretending to be a family that was frightened by reform.

So just imagine if this time around, the debate is shaped by real people, looking us in the eye, telling their actual story, and asking for our help to fix this broken system.

Phony stories helped defeat health care reform in the past. But this time, real stories could be the reason we win."

But I would prefer to avoid a nuclear war - than win one.

Unless you can read minds, or point to some place where I wrote that, or even suggested such a thing, I believe you are way off base suggesting such a thing. Actually Warren, and for what it is worth, you are wrong I don't see you that way at all. Not sure how I see you, been reading your various posts for sometime, but I can honestly say I don't see you in that light.

BTW the word is pussy, not p*ssy. Why do people do that? Is it because the writer believes the reader's mind won't interpret the word, they'll somehow not be able to figure out what the missing letter is, or does it give the writer the illusion that what they just wrote is somehow more acceptable? Reminds me of people who use to spell out words they didn't what to say out loud. The mind will record the words/letters correctly. If you think a word is somehow unacceptable, use another word.

As far as nuclear war goes, I too would rather avoid one, but I wasn't aware we were under attack. But you bring up a good point.

Well lets see if I can answer your question.

First of all I would not have anything to say because I would do what Bush\Cheney did in regards to Iraq.

I would preemptively strike first killing him because like Bush\Cheney said I could not wait on a smoking gun in the form of a mushroom cloud since he had made numerous death threats against myself and my family.

  231. maxtrue June 30 @6:17 pm :
"XRepub, the Clinton adminstration had OBL and didn't wack him, Carter created OBL."

    1. a. Clinton ordered strikes against bin ladin on at least two occasions, and one of those attacks missed him by only minutes. By comparison, the bushcheneyrumdumb Administration put the effort to destroy alqaeda on the back burner, while they concentrated on Iraq. Your insinuation that President Clinton was in any way culpable is a dam' dirty lie.

    b. bin ladin was trained and armed by the reaganbush Admin against the advice of our Northern Alliance allies. Carter trained and armed the Afghans of the Northern Alliance. The allegation of a Carter connection implies that bin ladin & alqaeda were in the Northern Alliance, ie Afghans. In fact, bin ladin is a Saudi who whose family has ancient connections to the bush-connected Saud dynasty. Conversely, before 1981, bin ladin did engineering work for Saudi royals, and was recommended to the bush crime family by them. This info has been in the public domain for a quarter of a century. The Saudi royals screwed America (and Carter) in the '79 oil crisis, and any recommendation from the Saudis to the Carter Administration would have been tossed into the circular file immediately. As a favorite of the Saudi royals, bin ladin was OBVIOUSLY not a pal of Carter, but rather a pal of the Big Oil people who benefit financially from America's oil shortages. At no time was Carter ever a texas oilman. However, several other American pols were famously allied to Big Oil. Guess who.

    2. "Some people will stay on their blame game forever. The 2000 election didn't shift administration control to much later than usual."

This claim is total bushit. There is absolutely no evidence that the bushcheney cabal came into control of the government any later than any other Admin. However, there were many bushcheneyrepublican lies that the White House and W.H. equipment had been trashed by the Clintons, and this was supposed to have impeded the bushcheneyrepublican transition. All proven to be lies. Dirty lies.

    3. "Bush kept many US security bosses in place and had the intelligence community functioned properly, a problem from the Clinton years, they might have done what XRepub suggests."

Many? No. Clinton appointed george tennet to head the CIA, and discovered too late that tennet was a political opponent who was out to embarrass him. tennet spent most of 2 years working to embarrass President Clinton and decrease Al Gore's chance of becoming Prez. Clinton was not at all shy regarding the horrid mistake he'd made in naming tennet his spy chief.

Of course, babybush kept the incompetent george tennet on, tennet being a known enemy of the popular and successful Clinton/Gore Administration. Too dam' bad that tennet was every bit as partisan and incompetent while he was working for bushchenyrumdumb as he had been while 'working for' President Clinton. As a result, the crappy job tennet did will be forever remembered as crappy republican screwups.

    4. "XRepub, the Clinton adminstration had OBL and didn't wack him, Carter created OBL. Some people will stay on their blame game forever. The 2000 election didn't shift administration control to much later than usual. Bush kept many US security bosses in place and had the intelligence community functioned properly, a problem from the Clinton years, they might have done what XRepub suggests."

More bushit. More dirty lies. The intelligence community (NSA, CIA, and military intelligence) repeatedly warned the bushcheneyrumdumb Administration of the bin ladin threat, but the dopes concentrated on planning to fight Iraq instead. You can read about it in Woodward's book. The bushcheneyrumdumb crowd never denied what Woodward wrote about 2000-2001. In fact, they invited him back into the White House to continue his interviewing and writing. Apparently, republicans are too stupid to understand the implications of the bushcheneyrumdumb cabal planning a war against Iraq before baby bush was even sworn in, yet ignoring the warnings about alqaeda until the towers collapsed.

    5. "I don't think that bipartisan commission blamed Bush, or even scolded him more than they did Clinton. Clinton has said many times that until 9/11 people just didn't understand the threat."

Of course not. As anyone who paid attention knows, the Rudman/Hart Commission made it's final report on Jan. 31, 2001 (7 1/2 MONTHS BEFORE 9/11 !!!) and that was the end of the commission term. The commission could not have made a statement after after Jan. 31, 2001, because it no longer existed after that time.

A different commission that investigated 9/11 and found that the bushcheneyrumdumb Admin had completely ignored the Rudman/Hart Comission recommendation to harden airliner cockpits to prevent hi-jackings. The report made specific mention of the terrorists crashing passenger planes. The 9/11 commission also noted that the bushcheneyrumdumb Administration ignored the warnings of the intelligence community regarding bin laden, alqaeda, particular alqaeda operatives who had entered the US, terrorists taking flying lessons, etc.

Attempts to put any part of the onus of 9/11 onto President Clinton are republican lies with NO basis in fact. Such attempts are not mere exaggerations, they are great whopping lies.

The import of Bill Clinton's frequent statements about people failing to recognize the alqaeda threat is not about him or his Administration. The import is that the bushcheney Administration refused to take the threat of alqaeda seriously until 9/11/01, too late. The Clinton Administration understood the threat very well, as on their watch alqaeda had destroyed 2 embassies, severely damaged the USS Cole, and tried to blow up the twin towers, all of which killed scores of people. It was the seriousness oif the trhreat that prompted the creation of the Rudman/Hart Commission in the first place. Of course President Clinton understood the threat, for all his little failings, Clinton is no moron.

    6. When maxtrue bushits that there were no terrorist attacks on the bushcheneyrepublican watch, it is a patent lie, obvious to the most casual observer of current events. It is not a small, insignificant lie. Rather, it is a lie so preposterous that it illuminates all of maxtrue's attacks on his fictional 'Liberals'. maxtrue's insidious rumors and nasty little insinuations, his blatant rovet&luntz talking points, and such lies as may be seen supra, disinform the credulous as to what happened, what is happening, and what shall happen. This is no benefactor of humanity at work.

Can it be an accident that maxtrue rewrites history to whitewash certain villains and blame the blameless ? I say, no. I say, maxtrue is a republican partisan, intentionally masquerading as a thoughtful and well-informed 'moderate', pretending to provoke interesting political discourse. However, by examining the statements he made above, persons of even modest intelligence should be able to see that maxtrue diseminates disinformation with the single-mindedness and clumsiness of the NKVD .

  232. Just to put a few more gaping holes into maxtrue's defense of bushcheneyrumdumb, a reprise of that much censored report detailing how babybush and company ignored the warnings of his own FAA in the Spring of 2001 : Posted by the brilliant and scholarly Ms Katherine Graham Cracker on June 30, 2009 @ 4:47 PM :
'looks like this all happened on Shrub's watch'

People will note that Pres. Clinton can not be blamed for failing to heed these warnings, as he had already left the White House months before this FAA report came out.

  234. Well my ship's been split to splinters
    It's sinking fast
    I'm drowning in the poison
    Got no future
    Got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothing but affection for those who've sailed with me

Everybody's moving if they ain't already there
    Everybody's got to move somewhere
Well stick with me baby anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now
