Obama's High-Stakes Auto Gamble

| | Comments (153)

Here's the political problem with today's announcement that the federal government is taking over General Motors (which seems more significant than the auto giant's bankruptcy filing): Down the road President Obama now runs the risk of being held responsible for the company's fate.

What if, two years from now, the government's $50 billion investment for majority ownership looks like the dumbest business venture since New Coke. Obama could pay a political price.

On the other hand, if the feds can turn GM around, Obama will get the credit. But he's up against the prospect of harmful congressional meddling in GM's operations, the company's poor marketing prospects and the near-disastorous examples of other publicly-run businesses, such as Amtrak or the U.S. Postal Service.

With all that's on Obama's plate, becoming Automaker-in-Chief seems to be a risky move in the long run.

  2. Mechanic memories: “These goldurn Fords…why did they have to put that way back THERE!?”

“Buy that Chrysler and just remember those axles will fail you soon”. I did. And I experienced axle failure…two worn out half shafts way before their time.

“Well, we have seen several transmission failures in these Chevy Citations.”
I bought it anyway…new transmission , $900, just before it got cut cut in half by that big truck and I attained “Saved By the Belt” status.

Volkswagen Microbus: ” Make sure you inspect those brake lines once a month…they have a way of getting pinched and cut.”
My brakes went out it all three of my buses over the years! Once I drove 30 miles just to get off a freeway with no brakes whatsoever, on the freeway shoulder…scary …no cell phones, remote location…what a horrible day.
I now look at all used cars and can instinctively calculate how much it would cost to get the car up in running order, because while maybe one in thirty used cars really will “make it to California”, most will require many repairs before they attain that lofty status.

I think that is a great Gamble,,,this makes me like Obama,a little more,,,win or loose,,,we will know who is going to occupy the white house,,,,in 2012 and more Sotomayora's to add to the S C. winner take all at a time like this,,will make the R's tremble in their shorts,,and a lot more,,and more congress ,,and senate dems in power?,,and if he wins,,,then maybe we can get H C afterwards,I like the gamble.

  4. I will only quibble a little. You are right about Congressional meddling. Both the US Postal Service and AMTRAK are crippled by unreasonable demands on their products that would never apply to business.

For instance, AMTRAK must route its schedules around and give way to all freight traffic because Congress in its infinite wisdome gave control of the rail lines to the large freight corporations since people wouldn't need trains anymore.

The postal service is required to deliver in some fashion to every little podunk whistle stop in all 50 states for exactly the same price that it delivers to the house next door to the post office.

Now if despite government ownership, GM is allowed to actually be competitive with other auto manufacturers, then all should be well. They have a great line of cars and are about to bring out an actually usable electric car. Put solar panels on your roof and a Chevy Volt in your garage and you will never need another vehicle for in town driving, pay a dime for gas, or an electrical bill.

  5. Way back when, in the 70's, Mopars had a really strong one piece starter. It would start in any weather, but I had to replace them once a year like clockwork. Mopar used to be known for their transmissions though, I hadn't heard about axle problems.

I think Senate Reps know they can't win on Sotomayor unless something unusual happens. They'll want to make lots of noise though so they can tell their voters they tried, they just need a majority again to make any difference.

I am constantly amazed at the timidity of the Congressional Democratic leadership. Someone says Steny would be a lot more assertive, it would be good to see some of that for a change.

The Congressional Democrats just can't quite grasp the idea of being in the majority. A little hard nosed humor would be in order. I would love them to greet the next Republican whine with, "You were expecting to be treated better than you treated us? Sit down and shut up while we take out turn at running the world. If you want a favor, try cooperation for a change. "

"Dr. Hern predicted that this kind of thing would happen, as soon as Obama was elected President. The pro-life people, the most radical ones, feel they are losing the war. They feel they need a surge of violence.
"They want the doctors dead, and they invite people to assassinate us. No wonder that this happens."
"I am next on the list."

The only answer I can think of is for all of us on the pro-choice side of this civil war to refuse to resort to violence in response to the pro-life violence.

For example, we in Kansas should repeal the Kansas death penalty, so that we do not kill the killer. So that we stop the cycle of violence." .....

  29. I can't really see where Obama could have gone politically on this one. And there is 2010 and 2012. If the economy is still down , Obama will need the Unions.

This day in history marks the Battle of Quadisiya.

    http://books.google.com/books?id=oLyZhTuIczMC&pg=PA108&lpg=PA108&dq=Battle+of+Qadisiya&source=bl&ots=UUmMMFsrve&sig=KbCmKKni0gfi5SuIh2Xbv1yBzMs&hl=en&ei=ZCAkSoCOCI6gMon0nL0J&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6#PPA108,M1

Perhaps someone over at the State department might want to send Ahmadinejad a consolation note, You know, he's not good with historical facts. This event changed history very much.

Some historians have noted the Muslim Arabs used a sand storm to slaughter the retreating Persian army. http://books.google.com/books?id=vSVrNZ7ZRy4C&pg=PA56&lpg=PA56&dq=Battle+of+Qadisiya&source=bl&ots=FSHua-Wo3x&sig=Um8Q19h9kwoEEMyr5ks5hxpbwC0&hl=en&ei=ZCIkSqaWN6SgM8eUjbMJ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2

Other researchers say Muslim women and children cared for Muslim wounded on the field of battle but slaughtered the wounded Persians. http://books.google.com/books?id=bfcfOrihAvAC&pg=PA128&lpg=PA128&dq=Battle+of+Qadisiya&source=bl&ots=_btxTMnGwC&sig=0Ps9wOzeTuAy3OusqJU7kepFJ0o&hl=en&ei=ECMkSvzvCJasMs7h7aYJ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8

It has also been claimed however, the Persians sought to deprive the Muslims of their water forgetting their desert skills. This proved to be a critical mistake.

I’m surprised Holywood hasn’t picked up on this……certainly 300 made money.

  37. I think Kansas might want to investigate the claims made by others that the Dr. violated the law with late term abortions. I am not saying this is true or that such acts would justify murdering the him, but from what I am reading about Tiller, there was quite a fuss about his professionalism and history. If I am wrong, my apologizies and condolances to his family.

As a supporter of first and second trimester abortion and late term when the mother's health is in question, I find it odd how Democrats respond. One can at least understand the pro life postion even though one does not agree, They consider it murder as though the fetus before 24 weeks was a person with a soul. I am sure many feel strongly and given the numbers there are likely some nuts that will feel Obama will increase abortion on demand. I am surprised there haven't been more events. But then try to understand a beheading in NY some weeks back and people didn't want to link the murder with Islam in any way. We find ways to empathize with extremists, some who murder and burn women and try not to incite them to more mayhem.

I just think it is a double standard in trying to understand obvious religious conflict with secularism.

I don't know anyone that enjoys an abortion. I think the question is how to prevent them. While outlawing all abortions seems tempting to hardliners, President Clinton's kinder, gentler approach actually created the largest reduction in abortions.

  57. Hi Solar,
I think fighting and learning you're still friends afterwards makes for better friendships. Agreeing to disagree is often the best result you can come to.

Unfortunately, in this case you've made one third person reference to many. Huh?

"I happen to think that he was inspirational," Do you mean the abortion Dr.?

I don't think he was hero of villain, just a player. By the time people get to him its too late.

I'd like to see free birth control for teens without the embarrassment there is now, better care and support for unwed mothers, opening adoptions to gays, and better family involvement in a teen's life. I'd also like to see peace break out in the middle east and faster than light space drives.

  58. Solar you can read what you want to. Or read what I wrote and not what you imagine. While I will always feel badly for the family of all who have been unjustly murdered, I would not feel the same for a victim if they were indeed a murderer themselves as opposed to a law abiding person. Some pundits have suggested there was a history suspect of late term abortions beyond saving the health of the mother. My apology was not to the familiy, but for people here if that allegation is baseless which I do not know. And I hardly made the accusation from my vantage point.

Notice I did not say I knew anything about the history of Tiller other than remarks recently on the network. Man have claim Tiller repeatedly violated the law though I have NO EVIDENCE of that.

My point wasn't even about Tiller BUT THE REACTION. Some want Churches investigated and characterize a whole group of people. Not the same reaction I note repeatedly regarding "religious" acts by other religions agry at our secular laws.

How you manage to malign me is quite amusing. I listened to various media on the story and noted the different attitude when discussing pundits were talking about a murder suspect in the Tiller case or detainees at Gitmo. One is peppered with religious inuendo, the other scrubbed rather clean.

    Maybe now you get it.

And it also appears that the WH wants Sotomayor to restate her comment about race. I always suggested that so her passage would be broad. I suspect she will clarifiy, which is what she should have done from the start. The big news this week however might revolve around Thursday's speech.

Yes I meant the doctor,,,,and not just another player,,what was special,,is that he was hurt by these people before,,and did not waver,,,I don't like to put sports people on pedestals,,,and yet they are by some,,I would rater have sat and had a conversation with him,,than M. Jordan,,,but thats just me,,,,about the rest,,,ditto,,,and about the faster than light space drives,,,Im working on it,,,give me time,,,,and I will bend it a little,,and get there......Hey this missing plane,,,,a black hole??? no may day nada,,,hope they find some huge mistake and they are alive.

  61. Joe, you are quite wrong to think that most conservatives are lying about their disgust at the murder of Tiller. You know, SOCONs are not the Repubs largest group. Maybe the SOCONS on the far right engage in characterizations that are wrong. It makes no sense however to mirror what is wrong with that approach.

You are right some do gloat, but this episode only makes the pro-lifers look like a bunch of nutjobs. And yet, just weeks ago NY papers were discounting any connection between religion and planned stinger attacks and a beheading of a wife.

Posted by: maxtrue Author Profile Page | June 1, 2009 5:25 PM

  62. yeah, I hear the Republicans once actually had libertarians Max. Until Lindsey Graham through them out.

    Posted by: don1one Author Profile Page | June 1, 2009 5:34 PM

  63. Solar, I don't follow this stuff as much as you. Actually my habit is more about evolution debates. If Tiller is actually a hero then I am sorry I conveyed a different take.

Again, I think you confused myy message. I suggested the "facts" about Tiller aren't clear to many. Was he a hero or an abuser of late term laws. I have no idea. I think media should clear this up. My message however, was observing how quickly religion is condemned by media in regard to abortionist murder, but often scrubbed clean from terror characterizations.

The very same people decrying investigations by Justice of Mosques, advocating investigations of the "church" which they feel is behind this murder, more than the "clerics" here and abroad are responsible for terrorist acts.

That was really my point and not to state that Tiller was or wasn't a hero, etc. I condemn the murder, support the general bar of Roe and am suspect of all relgious literalism.

And Solar, I know what would be distasteful here and it would be quite foolish to alienate people I am trying to discourse with. In the future, if something looks like I've completely gone mad, then perhaps I have simply failed to communicate my intent correctly.

Posted by: maxtrue Author Profile Page | June 1, 2009 5:44 PM

  64. Joe, I can direct you to numerous centrist blogs were moderates of both feathers discuss things. Only the SOCON wing would privately gloat. Yes, things have not been great for my anologues on the Right, but there are more than libertarians on the other side who sport a number of liberal values.

And murdering a doctor is not a conservative principle I have read about. It seems Tiller drew such fire because he preformed thousands of late term abortions. Since he wasn't arrested I am confused about this claim. Was there simply a loop hole in Kanas. Being a Red State, how could this be? Maybe the HealthCare Czar should comment on what happened under her watch. THis was actually the opening line of the post Solar didn't like.

If there was such a myth about Tiller, why didn't it make news before Tiller's death? Why was he so controversial? I have heard that more than twenty State ban certain late second trimester abortions. How can that be with Roe? Was Kanas one of those States?

I assume some here know these issues and can comment.

  65. Don, you're funny. Now Lindsay wishes they stayed in greater number...LOL. Don't take those affilation polls too seriously. No one likes to be on the down side.

I remember pundits writing the Democratic OBIT in 2002. Remember? They were talking about the end of the Democratic Party. I would say now what I said then. It all goes round and round. I knew the Democrats would come back and I know the Republicans will have their day again. Well, not based on their present internal debate, but then the Democrats were very helpless for years.........

  67. Fair enough Max,,,,,,but if it was some goof ball atheist,,,that killed some Priest,,,I would feel the same way,,,someone just lost a loved one,,,,,,this plane thing today,,,made me think about,,the wife of that Lawyer,,,,,Olsen,, Susan i think was her name, she was a republican top spinng machine,,and I wanted to throw a book or something at the tv screen, every time that she was on it,,,,

She was on a plane that went down,,remember?,,,
When I talked to one of my clients, that ,called, and said that he was glad she was on that plane,,,I said wtf,,,and hung up on him,,,,,some one just lost a Mother,,I still don't like that Olson,Atty that,,helped take the election from Gore,,,,but do I want him harmed,no.

and then you go on to say this,, this in your last post,,,

"The very same people decrying investigations by Justice of Mosques, advocating investigations of the "church" which they feel is behind this murder, more than the "clerics" here and abroad are responsible for terrorist acts."

This is so argumentative to me,at this ,point, and makes me wonder why would you throw this in there at this time,,,I think that if you want to talk to someone about this,,and have a discussion,,,go ahead,,but at its proper time no?,,at least on some subject related to it,,,what the fuck does this have to do with the family aspect that I was talking to,,,I will suggest one thing,,,,,slow down some,,,,,but thanks for the explanation,,,

  69. Every once in a while even I get charmed by Chris Matthews. Today talking about the Republican kvetching over the President taking his wife to New York he said that the one thing that disturbed him most about George Bush was that he didn't seem to have any curiosity outside his own comfortable space, while the Obamas seem to be interested in everything. Then to paraphrase he said about the Republicans, "What a piss ant , whiney little party they have become. I like having a President with interests!"

From now on when I say Republican, you can be sure I am thinking "The Piss Ant Whiners"

    Posted by: jamie44.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | June 1, 2009 6:26 PM

  70. No...this was the paragraph that Solar did not like,,

"I think Kansas might want to investigate the claims made by others that the Dr. violated the law with late term abortions. I am not saying this is true or that such acts would justify murdering the him, but from what I am reading about Tiller, there was quite a fuss about his professionalism and history. If I am wrong, my apologizies and condolances to his family."

And my point was why would you care if it was true or not,,,,someone just lost a husband,,father brother,,,that is why got hot about it,,but I can get angry fast,,,and just as fast calm down,,,l had lots of practice,,,so lets just forget it. thats my last word on this..

Posted by: SolarCrete Author Profile Page | June 1, 2009 6:27 PM

  71. Just because people don't identify as Republican it doesn't make them Democrats. I know some Orange County conservatives that complained all the way through the Bush years.
Democrats are really good at shooting themselves in the foot, so I won't be surprised when Republicans. I don't think Republicans will come back on a social conservative platform though. People don't want to be told how to live, on the left or the right.

Solar, are you following the rise of Dr. Rand Paul and his run for the Senate against Bunning? If the name sounds familiar, he's the son of Dr. Ron Paul.

  74. "In the future, if something looks like I've completely gone mad, then perhaps I have simply failed to communicate my intent correctly."

Or perhaps you've simply gone mad. We'll be the judge of that.

Just kidding max. I like to stay away from this debate. I am anti-death penalty and pro-choice with aspirations that we can become a more pro-life culture.

Kinda related to all the spirtuality that has been in the air recently, there is one thing I believe in for sure. . . .and that is Life! It is the one thing I know we are given and it is the greatest gift from someone or another.

So I like to have respect for all life. Including law abiding citizens, murders, doctors, animals. etc.

I don't think any human is qualified to make the judgment that someone else should die before their time - except in the case of self-defense.

  75. "If there was such a myth about Tiller, why didn't it make news before . . . "

Because it was probably confined to fringe groups that have even less respect for the truth than Hannity.

Plus, tou can make some outrageous accusations based on innuendo - and you often don't have to even say anything that can be belied by the actual facts. And usually the less facts - you have the further you can go. All it takes is a few well-placed words.

Heck, all people take away from a report like that is the incendiary charge that this baby killer pushes the limits to kill as many babies as he can. Especially when most people watching the report are looking for precisely that message.

I suspect Dr Tiller had very strong views concerning late-term abortion and lived according to them. He certainly wouldn't need to do them for money. I admire himfor doing so in a place like small town Kansas

My brother-in-law drove from CA to St Louis back in the late fifties/early sixties to start med school at Washington U. A friend accompanied him. The stopped at a motel but were denied a room because his friend was Japanese. The mid-west doesn't change fast.

    I still love it, tho.

Carol - I don't want to start this up again, and don't want to hurt OD cuz I really like him, but one quick thought. I think what you did was show respect for the church's beliefs - you believed in it for that once and had no other reason for doing so. You recognized its worth. Showing disrespect is going to church and taking communion regularly and going out and
running gangland crime syndicates. The mafia went to their churches.

Irish priests beat, raped children: report

DUBLIN, May 20, 2009 (Reuters) — Priests beat and raped children during decades of abuse in Catholic-run institutions in Ireland, an official report said on Wednesday, but it stopped short of naming the perpetrators.

Orphanages and industrial schools in 20th century Ireland were places of fear, neglect and endemic sexual abuse, the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse said in a harrowing five-volume report that took nine years to compile.

The Commission, chaired by a High Court judge, blasted successive generations of priests, nuns and Christian Brothers -- a Catholic religious order -- for beating, starving and, in some cases raping, children in Ireland's now defunct network of industrial and reformatory schools from the 1930s onwards.

"When confronted with evidence of sexual abuse, the response of the religious authorities was to transfer the offender to another location where, in many instances, he was free to abuse again," the report said.

"Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from."

The report slammed the Department of Education for its failure to stop the crimes. In rare cases when it was informed of sexual abuse, "it colluded in the silence," the report said.

Successful legal action by the Christian Brothers, the largest provider of residential care for boys in the country, led the Commission to drop its original intention to name the people against whom the allegations were made.

No abusers will be prosecuted as a result of the inquiry.

John Kelly, coordinator of the Survivors of Child Abuse (SOCA) group, said there could be no closure without accountability.

"I have been getting phone calls all day from former residents, they feel their wounds have been reopened for nothing," he told Reuters. "They were promised justice by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) in 1999 and they feel cheated. They expected that the abusers would face prosecution."

    UNDERWEAR INSPECTIONS

The Christian Brothers said they were appalled at the revelations but denied that their lawsuit had obstructed the report. "We are deeply sorry, deeply regretful for what has been put before us today," Brother Edmund Garvey said.

Many of the children were sent into church care because of school truancy, petty crime or because they were unmarried mothers or their offspring. Some were used as laborers, churning out rosary beads or set to work on farms.

Sexual abuse was endemic in boys' institutions and girls were preyed on by sexual predators who were able to operate unhindered.

The Commission interviewed 1,090 men and women who were housed in 216 institutions including children's homes, hospitals and schools. They told of scavenging for food from waste bins and animal feed, of floggings, scaldings and being held under water. There were underwear inspections and in one case, a boy was forced to lick excrement from a priest's shoe.

Absconders were flogged and some had their heads shaved.

Tom Sweeney, who spent five years at industrial schools including two years at the notorious Artane Industrial School, said it still haunted its former residents.

"Unfortunately there are a lot of people that have committed suicide, there are a lot of people that have ended up in hospitals and they have been forgotten about," he said.

Revelations of abuse, including a string of scandals involving priests molesting young boys, have eroded the Catholic Church's moral authority in Ireland, once one of the most religiously devout countries in the world.

The inquiry, conducted at a reported cost of 70 million euros ($95.16 million), was announced in 1999 by then Prime Minister Bertie Ahern after he apologized to victims following revelations made in a series of television documentaries.

The government has paid out around 825 million euros in compensation to former residents of the institutions and the final bill is likely to top 1 billion euros.

  107. So just like last year when a terrorist christian American Taliban man walked into a church and opened fire on men, women and children another christian taliban terrorist killed another man in a church on Sunday.

These so called Christian Terrorist Groups are indeed just like the Taliban since they want to impose their religious doctrine on everyone and will go as far as bombing and murdering anyone who does not believe in the doctrine they teach.

Yes, we have are own Terrorists right here in America and they call themselves Christians. When are we going to go after our Taliban here at home as vigorously as we are going after them in Pakistan and Afghanistan?

    Hopefully very soon.

  120. Jack - you're right except for the fact that my address book is unique - it has info in it that is invaluable. I think I've had it for over ten years, and it has become a diary of sorts.

It's scary just how necessary that book is, but even more irreplaceable was my grade book when I was teaching. It is unimaginable how much grief I'd have had if I had lost it.

I got my new camera today and we plaed with it for awhile, taking pix and checking them out. But I let my sister take it home with it so my bil could play with it. Should have corn pix soon.

  122. For Carol,

Don't let anyone make you feel guilty about taking Communion
as I doubt that Jesus would condemn you for it.

It's like Solar Crete said above its what's in your heart that matters and nothing else.

Too many people turn a blind eye when it comes to evil being committed by the Church, any Church or religion for that matter.

Take solace in the knowledge that Jesus would be the last person to find anything you did in regards to taking Communion a sin or act of evil by you.

    Have a good day.

  123. Hey, ya gotta pay your dues to get that wafer, including countless hours of catechism, years of boring sermons, and a lot of awkward humming of hymns. But seriously, it's not a big deal... if you weren't baptized in the Church and didn't confess your sins beforehand, you didn't consume the Body of Christ, you just ate a piece of styrofoam.

  138. cheney and burr: from Daily Beast

But perhaps the greatest similarity in these two vice presidents, Burr and Cheney, is summed up by what Alexander Hamilton described about Burr's actions when Hamilton was at the operational head of the American army during the heightened period of tension with France.

"General, you are now at the head of the army," Burr told Hamilton. "You are a man of the first talents and of vast influence. Our constitution is a miserable paper machine. You have it in your power to demolish it and give us a proper one and you owe it to your friends and the country to do it." Hamilton replied: "Why Col[onel] Burr, in the first place, the little army I command is totally inadequate to the object you mention. And in the second place, if the army were adequate, I am too much troubled with the thing called morality to make the attempt." Burr then said: "General, all things are moral to great souls."

That last sums up Cheney's view perfectly.

  140. You know this is the exact reason I changed my mind about joining that Church. I thought do I really want to be a member of a club that makes these crazy rules and is the exact opposite of why I wanted to be a member of the club in the first place? Now did anyone but me understand that sentence? I think I got lost in it myself.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | June 2, 2009 6:16 AM

  141. And after dropping out of the classes I never did go for the communion again in that Church except through creative visualization. I think that was cool with Jesus. And I did sing. Really loud. Almost solo since a lot of the people there didn't sing much. Methodist's are more used to singing.

  142. And I'm sure the pain I felt from the pressure on my sensitive knee caps did serve some purpure. I was paying for any sins I may have mistakenly committed even though I do try to live by the Golden Rule and if the do unto others idea doesn't stop me then I use the rule of Karma, what goes around, comes around. Those two rules usually keep me behaving.

  145. And please don't be mad at OD. He had a tough role to play in all of this. It was his comment that got us all thinking. Sometimes people make that kind of sacrifice and we should thank them instead of being angry with them.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | June 2, 2009 7:24 AM

  146. Being harshly judgmental is a role?
OD was not only rude to you, but to everyone on this blog that he was thinking of when she told us to get a life. He was rude when he told Patsi to take a few weeks off the blog.

Keeping watch over us? Making sure we're kept in line?
What exactly 'is' he doing? Constantly judging us and making sure we live up to 'his' standards', that's what he's doing.

LOL Bethy.... I'm the same way. Don't you just hate it when that happens. You've got a good idea there, and I've actually thought the same thing, at least for the important things. They have those alerts, where you clap and it beeps. I also use Jacks idea, and buy huge numbers of things, so if I lose one, I can find another.

(...not fool proof though. Like Dark Lord with his utility knives, I can have 16 pairs of reading glasses, and have trouble finding one)

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | June 2, 2009 10:30 AM

  148. "Being harshly judgmental is a role?"

Well yes it is Chloe. We all learn from those who are judgemental at times. We learn what is feels like to be the victim of judgement. It makes us stop and think about it. When we judge the judgemental we are being judgemental. Eh?

There is a role for the hobo laying drunk on the street and everyone else in this world. They all have something to teach us.

Have you ever found even yourself playing a part displaying characteristics that you don't even recognize in yourself? You wonder who jumped inside of you. I have.
