Iranians, Unlike Americans, Fight the Supremes

| | Comments (278)

Here's hoping that Iranians can do a better job of resisting a "supreme" order than Americans did in 2000.Khamenei.gif

Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared that his deranged puppet, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, won the election, ordering protesters off the street.

But it looks like the unsatisfied Iranians aren't taking it. Too bad the American people did not show more gumption when our Supreme Court elected George W. Bush despite overwhelming evidence that he actually lost the 2000 election.

CQ's Andrew Satter reports: Health care tops the agenda this week.

The US has grown tired and apathetic. I mourn the loss of life in Iran, but it's wonderful seeing people stand up for what's right.

We just need to remember that it's what's right for them, not necessarily us.

But for over two hundred years America has always said/thought it knows what's best/right for everyone.

  5. cbob, best way i know too cook patty pans aka scallop squash is the simplest:
wash, put in covered bowl with a little water and zap for less than 4 minutes ( time depends on size/maturity of squash and power of microwave)

otherwise cook like yellow crook neck squash.

I love to wake up in the morning to read what wisdom C-Bob has left us from the wee hours of the morning. Sometimes C-Bob, you are just brilliant.

And yes Solar, we all fit in. You may have to turn us around a few times, turn us sideways or upside down but you can find a hole that we fit in here. Glad to see that we haven't run off Don. Love ya man. We were having a little fun with ya. I'm not sure if that qualifies for devolving. Hey I think that maybe that "devolving"
here might be my favorite thing to do on this blog, but not sure because I still need a good definition.

And yes Craig, life is too good for us for us here to become too passionate about anything that aggravates us. Not so in Iran and their neighbor countries.

  10. Here is to youth! Americans were too old and fat in 2000 to fight the Supreme Court decision. Iranians are a young and rebellious population. We used to be like that!

Watching the death of the young girl who was marching with her father in Iran ...reminded me of Kent State. Yep, they have the fire in their bellies.

They are young and with that idealistic.
IMO , they believed that they had as good a democracy as anybody. With this election they have had it rubbed in their face that they don't. The Iranians are a proud people and believe themselves to be better than there Arab neighbors. This makes them look like a typical Arab despotic state.
The Iranian people lost their political innocence

The the problem with street protests is they only work against someone who can be shamed and embarrassed. Street protests against Joseph Stalin would have been suicide.
Is the Supreme leader another Stalin? I doubt it as Stalins are rare but he is very conservative and does believe in his cause as well. Remember his cause is back by his religious beliefs.

  13. Jack...the best hope for the Iranians is the split that is growing between the clerics. Divide and conquer, I say!

It is sad and inspiring to see the urban and urbane people of Iran march. I know the rural areas are still clinging to thier guns and religion.

Posted by: Blonde wino Author Profile Page | June 22, 2009 7:33 AM

  14. the worst thing that Obama could do is make the protests a cause celeb, as many republicans are pushing. . That would allow the the ruling powers in Iran to use the outside meddling as a way to rally the population against the protesters.
The focus needs to be on the corrupt Iranian government, not on old animosities between us and Iran. Except for quiet support for democracy in Iran our best choice is to STFU. And let the debate stay between different factions in Iran.

If this becomes America against the Mullah's the only threat we have is sending in troops and I see that like all your Republican Brethren you want to trade American Blood for the Oil and Gas Resources.

I wonder when we will have another Kent State because under Republican Ideas they would continue to sell their Souls for Power and Money.

  21. Ping...

We helped overthrow a Democratic Iran in the 50's and they have not forgotten it. We have no business telling them how to run their country.

There is nothing we can say or do that will change that fact. The only thing we can do is infuriate the Mullah's to crack down even more on the Iranian people and cause a lot more bloodshed by sticking our two cents in.

All your doing like your Republican Brethren is cheer lead us into another War like you did with Iraq. And we all know that we only went into Iraq to take control of there Oil Resources.

We traded American Troops Blood for Oil, plain and simple fact and you know it.

Oh by the way Americans did indeed fight and die for American Freedom here at home. We can not export American Freedom around the World.

Only the people of other countries can bring the Freedoms they want, not us by continuing to threaten them with our military or our bombs if they don't do what we tell them to do.

And right know the Republicans are once again threatening our very Freedoms by inciting violence against anyone in America who don't follow their path, which is the path to destruction.

It is basically two issues...1) Moral obligation to publically denounce to stop the violence 2) Political obligation is to stay out of iran's version of a democratic process.

I am sick of repugs telling Obama to take the moment...like Ronnie R...like they are really looking out for his political future.

  29. mornin'

Not really sure what to make of the dichotomy you have cast light on Sr. Crawford. I think there may be some difference between a facistic one party theocracy with democratic window dressing and a weak opposition candidate and whatever the representative two party democracy is that we live in. The biggest difference I see is that we are a nation of people who are governed by consent under laws people we elect to pass them rather than ruled by ayatollahs who rule with the imprimatur and laws of the supreme being. (OK, Dumya thought he did too.) The people on the street in Iraq are at least in part able to remember their revolutionary roots without resort to badly written history books that in essence deify the country's founders, and they can talk about it with parents who lived it if they are too young to have witnessed it themselves.

    btw, I hope everyone had a great father's day - I know I did.

Yup, Iran's revolution will have to come from within, but if it does, does anyone really believe we'll sit on the sidelines? Times have changed since the 1770s, and we didn't have to unseat the government we seceeded from. But as to the bloodshed, yep, Ping, it's part of the dealm isn't it?

The Obama administration, for example, published a budget document not so very long ago which projects US economy will grow 3% next year 4% the year after that and 4.6% the year after that. That’s a fairy story. Anybody who bases their budget plans on a forecast like that is exhibiting all the symptoms of the great repression...."

We have no diplomatic relationship with Iran. At several points in history we have been opposed to the desires of the Iranian people. The current President uses any action by the US or Britain as a propaganda point to foment Middle Eastern problems. We are currently bogged down militarily in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Our finances are stretched way, way over the breaking point.

Do you really expect the US to do anything other than deplore the violence? Oh, let me guess. Another opportunity for Republican fund raising rather than actually being useful.

By letting France and Italy take the lead on this one from a global perspective, there is more likely to be a beneficial outcome long term.

I had an employee that did some special Indian rain dances. Just to get off work early. He wanted to go to the beach on a perfectly sunny beach day.

He did his special rain dance while we were pouring concrete. All of a sudden it crackeled a cpl of times-and it started raing a little heavy. But it only rained across the street from us.

We laughed our ass's off all day long. He didn't say a word for the rest of the day. I told him that I had connections down there ( the devil) and made my own special dance. He could not live it down for quite a while.

  78. Look, I've thought about some changes that have taken place at TM. But it is what it is, nothing more and nothing less. I like to joke sometimes, when someone asks what we're having for lunch, I say we're having 'Take or leave it' for lunch. Well, that could sum up TM (as well as just about every other thing). Take it or leave it. We each have that choice.

Not much happening now, but there will be sometime in the future, and things will enevitably get more heated again. Until then, I like things just the way they are.

  82. If you have ever been in a situation where your every action is curial upon your very survival, then the following should ring true.

Actions by cowards will not only get themselves killed, they are just as likely to get you killed in the process.

Empty promises made by cowards will be their doom, and could be yours.

If you know you are going to die anyway, die trying to win your freedom, die on your terms not theirs.

  83. I came to the conclusion a long time ago that if someone didn't use your name and didn't specifically insult you in a way that could be understood by anyone reading the message, then it probably wasn't worth gettin upset about something that was probably one of the following:

    1. Your misunderstanding
    2. Not meant as an insult at all
    3. Was a lame attempt at a joke that didn't work
    4. attacked the issue not me

    or most important

    5. Me being way, way too sensitive.

Now a direct, by name, obvious insult can either be taken on or ignored. In the heat of the moment., the best action is usually just go away for a while and cool down before replying or ignoring.

Kennedy's office and is looking at the request for recognition AND is well aware that there is press interest!

A MOST SINCERE AND GRATEFUL THANKS TO YOU JAMIE AND CRAIG! YOU TWO ARE SWELL!

Last week my parents came to visit and with them they brought a surprise- the first fifty letters transcribed. It was SO wonderful to read through them all with my Mom and Dad. What a gift to get to know what sort of person my father was at the tender age of eighteen. I'll never be able to be hold a candle to him but I can keep trying anyways.

So amazing Jamie has started posting the letters at the blog

  97. Netanyahu declared that "our hand is extended for peace."

That rang a bell: in the 1956 Sinai war, a member of my editorial staff was attached to the brigade that conquered Sharm-al-Sheikh. Since he had grown up in Egypt, he interviewed the senior captured Egyptian officer, a colonel. "Every time David Ben-Gurion announced that his hand was stretched out for peace," the Egyptian told him, "we were put on high alert."

And indeed, that was Ben-Gurion’s method. Before every provocation he would declare that "our hands are extended for peace," adding conditions that he knew were totally unacceptable to the other side. Thus an ideal situation (for him) was created: The world saw Israel as a peace-loving country, while the Arabs looked like serial peace-killers. Our secret weapon is the Arab refusal, it used to be joked in Jerusalem at the time.

This week, Netanyahu wheeled out the same old trick.

  106. Folks forgetr that Teheran does not equal Iran. The folks in the capital, and Shiraz too, may be unhappy with the election. However, I doubt that the people in Hamadan, Isfahan, Qom, or Meshed are all that interested in a change of government, especially if the change means a disruption of the economy.

The pompoussword-rattling twaddle or Messers pong and reality indicate to me that they never experienced, or senility has blotted out the memory of, hostile fire. For instance, the crack, whizz, and thunk of AK47s or the foooTHUMPPP of 82s. All the guts and glory talk comes from bushcheneywannbees who never saw a big, strong man break down and cry in terror, or crap in his pants. That's your damn glory : when you fill your pants with your used k-rats. Watch your pals shiver from the cold as their blood runs away, watch them desperately trying to stuff their guts back in, or put a hand back on. Then, if you aren't crying yourself, or barfing your guts out, and onmly then, tell me that Obama is timid.

  107. "that sounds just like bush1 right after that first gulf war"

No it sounds like the typical Liberal babble the Liberals constantly keep trotting out.

Case in point,Genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Are your hands raw from all the wringing?

What about the 350K murder in Iraq, more babble from the Left.

1994, Rwandan Hutus killed more than half a million plus Tutsis, more babble.

Pol Pot Massacre of 1.7 million people, just more of the same, more hand sitting while saying , "Please stop. We like to do more, but no it really isn't our business to step in, however please remember should you survive that we care so very much. Good luck."

Never saw a human rights problem the Liberal didn't support by displaying all their genuine heart felt grief and compassion, then talked endlessly what to do about it. And that is the real problems I have with Liberals, while the genocides rages on, the Liberals continue to talk, and talk, and talk. Their final position is always the same, it never changes, "it is their country, we don't want to become involved, they will have to make their own changes".

  109. "Watershed Iranian events make case for Al Jazeera

....In Israel, Al Jazeera English has become the channel de jour for political operatives and policy makers who can see first hand what is being said by regional leaders, and monitor Arab coverage of their own activities.

Max Uechtritz, the former head of news for the ABC and the Nine network, is now director of programming for Al Jazeera English, based in Doha, Qatar. He says there are great benefits in this two-way street. "The Israelis feel they need to watch it to understand what is going on in the Arab world," he says, "and by interviewing Israeli leaders and commentators, Arabs are seeing for the first time that Israelis are not the inhuman devils they have been demonised to be."

While Al Jazeera frames its content from an Arab perspective, in exactly the same manner that Fox News and CNN wrap themselves in the US flag and the BBC projects a British viewpoint, it is not the mouthpiece of any government.

It is privately funded and frequently at odds with Arab leaders. Its pro-democracy, pro-freedom, anti-censorship stance has been condemned by neighbouring Saudi Arabians who accuse it of "peddling poison on a golden platter". It has been banned in Bahrain and accused of inciting protests in Iran, so its fair to say it takes an independent line. In doing this, it shines light on material we rarely see."

Al-Qaeda's third-in-command has told Al Jazeera that the group would use Pakistan's nuclear weapons against the US if it gained access to them.

Pakistan has been battling the Taliban and its al-Qaeda allies in the Swat valley and tribal areas in the northwest since April when fighters took hold of a region just 100km away from the capital, Islamabad.

  120. As far as the comment on the '53 coup, the Mullahs supported the Shah because they feared the Soviets more than anything. Who got the Red Army out after Hitler was prevented from taking Iran? And who battled the Tzar? Seems like America helped protect Iran against thugs for the last 100 years and Prime MInister Mosaddeq who battled the Shah in '53 was a step away from allowing Stalin to get his port on the Gulf. The Mullahs spit on his grave.

Yes TiR, but Obama is playing it carefully. Anyone notice the meeting between Egypt, the Saudis and Israel? Seems they have a big horse in this revolution. May the face of Neda haunt the Mullahs the rest of their friggin lives.

Today more protests and more violence. This was always more than Mousavi.

I have seen reasonable data putting it more than 400k murdered Iraqis at the hands of Saddam. He would still be killing Iraqis. Ms. Power in the O-team has what to say about Iran? How does Carter like to see Hamas and Hizb'Allah beating Iranians? Didn't he say Iran democratically elect its leaders? Rumor has it one imported Arab militant working for the Mullahsmurdered Neda who was doing what? Iran puts on an air show to impress the Gulf. Too bad we didn't shoot them all down. How many years will the Iranians be tortured by their religious rulers?

If Iran falters, then peace will come to the Middle East. Lebanon stays free, Syria turns to the West. Iraq stays stable and we can concentrate on the disaster in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We can stop AQ in Yemen and keep North Africa including Sudan on the rational side of human rights. Right now, do Liberals care?

Sad truth is that Obama has far more balls than most Democratic leaders save Biden, Clinton and Webb.

I warned you all this election was going to be troubling. Given Obama promised not to let Iran get the bomb, perhaps we might see this opportunity as are best chance to spare the Iranians the inevitability of future carnage. I suspect that was what Egypt, Israel and the Saudis were discussing including a secret defence agreement of some sort. A real watershed moment that most Liberals are sleeping through.

  129. Posted by: SolarCrete | June 22, 2009 12:57 PM : "That rang a bell: in the 1956 Sinai war, a member of my editorial staff was attached to the brigade that conquered Sharm-al-Sheikh.

Our secret weapon is the Arab refusal, it used to be joked in Jerusalem at the time."

This week, Netanyahu wheeled out the same old trick.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    Mr. Crete,
I'd like to know who wrote this piece you quote. I wouldn't take it at face value. It talks about '56 and Ben Gurion's alleged public relations.

After the '67 war, Ben Gurion favored evacuating the Israeli Army from all of the West Bank, except Jerusalem, Mt Horeb, and the Golan Heights. Further, while it is true that in 1956 Ben Gurion said he offered his hand in peace, the Egyptian dictator, Abdel Gamal Nasser then seized and nationalized the Suez Canal, which had been built by and was owned by, the French and British.

Nasser claimed that the French and British had already received adequate compensation during the 87 years they'd used the canal, and didn't care to pay them for the loss of their equity. He was angry that the US and Britain had backed out of his plan to built the world's largest dam at Aswan. The US and Britain were unhappy with Nasser, because he was making overtures to the Soviet Union, and was styling himself as the leader of the Non-Aligned Nations. In the Cold War, the Dulles boy declared that if you weren't for us, you were against us. Nasser's claim to head the Non-Aligned Nations also drew the ire of Jawaharlal Nehru, who for a decade had cultivated that image.

As Israel and Egypt were still in a state of war, Egyptian control of the canal would deny Israel access to the canal. Any ship or boat flagged or owned by a 3d nation that carried Israeli goods or passengers would be denied access to the canal, also. Further, 2/3 of Western and Southern Europe's supply of oil came through the canal, and Europeans were afraid that the Egyptians would dramatically raise the tolls for using the canal, hurting European economies. Those shrill European expressions of fears about oil control that Nasser had excited, helped to promote the creation of OPEC.

The 1956 attack on the canal resulted from for two actual injuries inflicted by Nasser, and the fear of a third : 1. His failure to indemnify the owners of the canal, and 2. His choking off of Israeli trade, 3. the fear that Nasser would raise tolls high enough to hurt European economies. The recapture of the canal by the French and British, and Israel's simultaneous defeat of the Egyptian Army along their border with Sinai was hardly a matter of Ben Gurion guilefully "offering his hand in peace." It was a matter of a fascist dictator seizing property for which he refused indemnity, and which he threatened to use against Europe and Israel.

Thus, the attack in '56 had absolutely nothing to do with any alleged perfidy on the part of Ben Gurion. The Egyptian officer may have made a joke that the writer took seriously. In fact, if the Egyptian Army was put on high alert, it was because the Egyptian Commander ordered it, not because of Ben Gurion. Of the 2 clashes that took place on Ben Gurion's watch, one occured when the Arab armies were attacking in 1948, and the other was in '56, when Nasser was threatening to cut off Israeli supplies.

Btw, it was Canadian PM Lester Pearson who concocted a 'solution' - the 1st UN Peace Keeping Mission - to seperate the Israelis from the mauled Egyptian Army. republican US President Dwight Eisenhower had opposed the invasion, and demanded that Israel, Britain, and France stand down. He supported the Canadian peace plan.* As the crisis passed, Europe was held up with much higher tolls from '57 to '67. For his effort, Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize. And as we all know, in '67 the Peace Keepers proved to be worth their weight in air.

Of course, by 1967 and the 3d war with Egypt, Ben Gurion had already been out of power for 4 years. So, the tale of the guile behind BenGurion's 'offering his hand in peace" is apocryphal.

*According to the neocons, this apparently makes republican Ike a Liberal babykiller, who is out of step with the American people. Later in '56 Ike was re-elected by a huge majority of Americans, which just shows what out of step means. Ah, but that was back in the days when 'Conservatives' were conservative, and 'right wing' referred to a hockey forward.

Bush built his campaign on "restoring honor" to the White House, and Gore stupidly took the bait and ostracized Bill. Had Bill campaigned heavily in NH, OH, or maybe Arkansas and swung one of those states, Florida wouldn't have mattered. And yeah, Gore should have been able to take TN, but he didn't. Gore got the opportunity to return to academia as a result. Putz.

  160. Palestinian plots up for grabs

A Palestinian advocacy group is accusing Israel of removing by stealth, what Palestinians see as a one of the key elements of any future peace deal – the right of return for refugees.

Adalah, a legal centre for Arab rights in Israel, claims that the possibility of Palestinians returning to the homes they left in what is now Israel is slowly being eroded away by the sale of an increasing number of their properties to private individuals.

In most cases, the original owners are either in exile or unable to afford the prices offered by tender on the Israel land administration website.

"Based on its law, Israel is allowed, as a state, to use this property. However they are not allowed to sell it to private hands," Hassan Jabareen, the managing director of Adalah, said.

But at least 282 homes have been sold in the past two-and-a-half years, he told Al Jazeera.

    'Absentee properties'

Israel calls them "absentee properties" – houses and land belonging to nearly 700,000 Palestinians who left or were expelled when Israel was created in 1948.

The properties are supposed to be held in trust by the Israel land administration until a final resolution is agreed, but once they are sold to private owners, any right of return becomes almost impossible.

The Palestinians have always argued that the refugees should be allowed to go back, even to lands that are now part of Israel.

I agree Flatus. But I think the harder question is whether you hope this political movement in Iran will, over time, lead to a more moderate and cooperative government through a peaceful transition of power?

Or should the policy be to encourage unrest and foment rebellion that could lead to many attrocities - but likely degrade Iran's progress towards nukes in the near term.

When Twitter was in early days and would get overloaded, you would get the picture of some birdies trying to lift a whale. This graphic became known as the WHALEFAIL.

CNN got the dreaded FAIL from tweeters the first night of the Iran protesters. It was the weekend evening and they were in rerun rotation. All over Tweeter it became #CNNFAIL until they finally went live and the anchors were all over themselves making excuses and apologies.

Just now the Washington Post got caught with a bad link on their page for a major happening event with the Metro Crash. I wonder how long it will take them to correct with the following flashing around Tweeter:

"#WaPoFAIL: Front page link at WashingtonPost.com on Metro accident went to old story about Virginia Tech massacre."

  178. Mr. Crete,

Dam', you always bring intriguing items to the Trail !

I think the Pal talk about a right of Pal return is a non-starter. Pals talk about it as if Israel is sneakily eliminating this 'right', when in fact, a Pal right of return has NEVER been on the table.

If you were to fail to pay your property tax for 61 consecutive years, you wouldn't expect your property to still be waiting for you, if/when you ever got back. If you can't walk away from your property for 61 years, without unpleasant consequences ensuing, how can anyone else expect to ?

Of course, there has always been a very easy way for all of them to return, but they don't want to take the easy route. They'd rather reconquer the land. Macho crap. Also, the Israelis arew loathe to talk about it, so between the 2 of them, it is never discussed in public.

But, even if the Palestinians were (subjunctive, against evidence) to take the easy way, after 61 years of abandonment, people just can't expect buildings or even acreage to be as it was.

Twitter is only as much fun or as informative as how your use it. I tweet very little simply because I'm not really doing a lot of activities, but my blog topic goes up whenever it changes, and a couple of friend pop in now and then and it is better than instant messaging..

The way I use it most is to stay on top of news and politics. Almost all of the people I "follow" are news or political activists. Just as with here, they link excellent articles or provide commentary on events.

The first two nights of Iran protests, the pages were on fire. with 30 and 40 messages stacking up every few seconds. It really was amazing being tied into a major event in the world absolutely live as if you were there.

  186. Warren, I think Congress in 1922 answered the question about Palestinians who took up arms against Israel. Funny how your logic ignores the millions of Jews forced from Arab lands they inhabited for centuries. What, are there even 400 Jews left in North Africa?

As far as your choice, encourage unrest and foment rebellion. We are doing that? Is that what you though about Eastern Europe during the Cold War? The Iranians, many of them, are sick of their pathetic rulers. How many have died at the hands of the clerics forgetting about the stupidity that encouraged Iraq to attack.

We have been waiting for a peaceful trasfer of power. Bill Clinton waited eight years while Iran sent hit squads to Africa, Europe and South America. Before this "peaceful transfer of power" the Mullahs will green light Hamas and Hizb'Allah. Make no mistake about that. The cleric are already cracking down and have long ago denounced American "fomenting". They also know Egypt and Saudi Arabia are plotting for more strikes against them.

Seeing that WE have little influence besides the moral high ground we can promote on the world stage, that leaves degrading the Iranian nuclear program a huge stake in this race. The Mullahs plan to hold their people hostage anyway against retaliation. Iranians know that. How safe are they after a major incident suspected of Iran? Why do you think a major facility of weapon research is located in downtown Tehran?

And while some are taking shots at Obama, let us look at our allies. Germany is Iran biggest trading partner. Why hasn't Merkel suspended trade? While she talks the talk, she hasn't kept German multinationals from trading to Quds. Here is a WSJ report on how two European companies we should ban here in the US in protest, sold equipment to the Mullahs they use to censor their citizens, or should I say vassels.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124562668777335653.html#mod=todays_us_page_one

Iran is a no show for Obama's invite to the G 8:http://www.reuters.com/article/gc08/idUSTRE55L5GQ20090622

Also note that Andrew Sullivan who has been waxing pretty about Obama's handling of Iran links up with Totten who takes a tougher line. I am glad some bloggers don't toe the more Liberal line and try to paint a realistic picture. Some like Warren prefer a many decade wait for liberty in Iran without much projection of what will happen in the mean time to the world or the Iranian people. Raise your hands if you want the revolution to stop.

Yep Dark Lord, I wouldn't be so sure of what some players are up to. Here is what Israel would like Iran to think:

http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=6146 I wouldn't be too sure about the ground realities. Now is a great time to uncover some secrets...

And everyone, let's not forget the more Liberal side of the equation all over the internet. How many Liberal blogs are saying that Mossad and the CIA engineered the protests? To see many on the Left defend the Mullahs and reject the idea the Iranians are ready for a revolution is rather pathetic.

    One article blasts Twitter:
    http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=32899 God Damn capitalists!!!!

Other Leftish articles blame the US for causing Iranian behavior, calling Israel and the US the real enemies of international justice. It is quite sad.

Again, Solar, the Palestinians rejected peace with Israel and tried to destroy her more than once. The US was clear all the way back in 1922 that these rejectionists would not be granted unconditonal return in an effort to defeat Israel through the ballot. While Muslim nations in the Middle East profess outrage at a Jewish State, they have forced Jews to leave their countries. They teach their children that Jews are evil enemies. Ahmadinejad talks of wiping Israel off the map.

God forbid we meddle in such affairs. http://www.commentarymagazine.com/blogs/index.php/rubin/70942

    Re: Healthcare:

Well first, I don't agree with the natural urge in Washington to complain that the process is taking too long and demand action no matter what.

I think this is a very complicated issue so I hope they take the time to come up with the best plan they can.

My ideas are that there needs to be a focus on expanding care, cutting costs and decreasing the number of uninsured.

(And "cutting costs" means cutting prices of routine procedures, prescription drugs and eliminating waste, i.e., reducing unecessary procedures and increasing efficiency through technology. As opposed to decreasing the percentage of GDP that the Country spends on healthcare.)

Tort reform re: not only malpractice - but also insurance companies trying to avoid care.

We should also encourage more people to go into healthcare - and have more clinics staffed mainly nurses and physician assistants that focus on preventative care.

And Americans should be incentivized to eat better and work out.

I have not really heard any good explanation of why it should cost so much. But there seems that there can be a lot of steps taken simply by "reform" - which should not be funded by taxpayers.

Anyways, we should keep the price tag down - since it will inevitable cost more than we expect. And I think there should not even be a debate re: rolling back the Bush tax cuts to help pay for it. Those tax cuts were stupid and wealthy were not even asking for them.

And finally - if we are going to be going into the insurance business. We better be talking to the insurance companies. The insurance companies of course should not be dictating the process - but they deserve a seat at the table.

  193. The Ayatollah Khomeini began his revolution through the use of casette tapes that spread his message to the poor and disgruntled of Iran. In those days, the Shah had planned a great leap forward, and had broken the rug weaving looms, causing considerable unemployment. The hard-pressed came from the countryside to the big city. Teheran grew from 50,000 in 1950 to 5,000,000 in 1980. A majority of the immigrants were unemployed, young, men, the type of people most likely to join gangs to find guidance, meaning, and a feeling of belonging. The Ayatollahs revolution provided all that. Fortunately for the revolution's leadership, the war with Iraq broke out and consumed the energy of the rootless young and the lives of about 1,000,000 of them.

The latest analogue for casette tape revolution is twitter revolution. However, I wonder if the emotional and social lesions that made Iran vulnerable to revolution in the late 70s are present in the Iran of today.

Obama is right to be careful of Iran. Iran is dangerous in more ways than one. Also, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, the Gulf States, and Saudi Arabia all have a stake in seeing that Iran tends it's attempts to destabilize and control it's neighbors. To the extent possible, why shouldn't the US let Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf States do the necessary heavy (and obvious) lifting ? That way, if things turn ugly, the Shi'a Diaspora (like Turkey and Iraq) won't blame us.

It's time for Sweetie and dinner. 'Bye.

We are obviously more engaged in the Middle East than we were during the Clinton years. Now we have troops in harm's way and therefore a dog in the fight.

Also, I don't remeber seeing anything like this in Iran during the Clinton years. So it looks like progress to me.

  200. XR, I liked your 1:31 post!

Patsi, I'm crushed! You censoring yourself???? In my opinion, it is totally unwarranted!

My idea of the great wisdom available to us is Whiskey Jack and his ideas and actions of getting things moving. Another example is the memories of people who have actually been in the thick of fighting and know what war is really like. Add to that Carol's experience with people who have trouble living within the law- Sturgeone's description of being a father - Sea's incredible ability to make a living doing so many things, and her father's law experiences - and Jamie's un-believable campaign to get recognition for Sea's father 's army comrades.

That's wisdom, all that experience. I think everybody here contributes and I know I have left out most. If we do wander off topic, Craig has said he doesn't mind, and frankly most of the time he says it all. When we do get weird, to me it's like when my darling nephews get digging in mud, you just have to stop worrying about their getting dirty and enjoy the fun Letting go of conventions and free-associating is good for, and even necessary, for humans of all ages - possibly even all creatures. We all seem to enjoy playing. Watch a dog having puppy zooms in the snow - good medicine for you and the dog.

Craig - I'm not sure what you think we should have done in 2000. We are a nation of laws, and I don't want to see us get an idea that mob rule is the way to go.

Solar - did you see my answer to you on the last thread and, if so, was that acceptable to convince you I meant no nastiness to you or Don otr anyone else?

Further than that, you provoke questions in others' minds as to how we would react in the same situation.
You beg the questions of what we could, what we would, what we do, and what we don't do. Those are the kinds of questions we ask ourselves without even realizing it. All of those pertain to every other poster here, and I think that is at least one path to wisdom and understanding. Isn't there a saying that Man is the proper study of Man ? That's us...that's we, if you want to be picky.

  210. Hey - Don

I can't stand H uffington. but have booked that piece to read later on. It would sure be nice if what I said a few times during the primary's happened.

I have felt that most people are in the middle like me-but choose sides. Just like they do for a sports match. This stops them from not doing (voting ) for what is in the best interest of the country imo.

I have posed how R. P. has been right on the m ark. More and more people see this now. Also they are begining to see that Obama is not able to shed his contributors and lobbyist any more than Bush did.

I think that the independents are growing at a steady pace also. weather they are libertarian or indies -its all the same to me- as long as the middle is built up.

I found the passage in that book that I told Chloe about. I will post it a little later. I think that you will both like it.

    Bethy

Hello. there is no need to convince me of anything. I will never hold ( nor you against me) any one misunderstanding, arguement-regardless of who is right or wrong .

I don't get mad and stay mad a friends. Just the opposite. I worry that they stay mad at me. I do think that Jamie has come up with the perfect set of guidelines for me to follow when something is being hashed out.

I" came to the conclusion a long time ago that if someone didn't use your name and didn't specifically insult you in a way that could be understood by anyone reading the message, then it probably wasn't worth gettin upset about something that was probably one of the following:

    1. Your misunderstanding
    2. Not meant as an insult at all
    3. Was a lame attempt at a joke that didn't work
    4. attacked the issue not me

    or most important

    5. Me being way, way too sensitive.

Now a direct, by name, obvious insult can either be taken on or ignored. In the heat of the moment., the best action is usually just go away for a while and cool down before replying or ignoring."

I was going to link it but - it is worth repeating as is. If you-you as in the general sense take a look at this list. If one or more of these come into play. It is worth asking someone what the hell did they mean.

Every thing is fine. I think that Don and others will agree with that list also-but?

  234. That beautiful blog of Montana reminded me of a story I heard yesterday.

My niece's sister-in-law's father-in-law ( just so you know they're real people and not urban myth) went bacpacking with his daughter and son, down in southern california. They found great spot and set up camp. As it got dark, they realized that they were being watched by two greenish eyes, maybe 6 in apart. They made a lot of noise and threw things into the brush, but to no avail. They finally decided not to stay, and got out of there. On the way down, the father fell and broke his leg. Daughter carried their stuff and son carried/helped father, until they got to help.

    Sound like fun?

    good luck with it.
    Just remember the tinkerer motto
"Damn, I thought that would work better than that"

Some ways to cook patty pans.
slice them and use them as a replacement for pasta in you speggetti red.
this works real well if your sauce is like my moms. Some people would call it chili
    or
slice it and boil in a bit of water ad a little cheese at the end

The thing about patty pans is they have almost no flavor so they take on the flavor of what ever you put on them.

  237. Looking back at my 1:31 post, to see what bethyboo liked I found this rotten piece of deception by the inappropriately named 'truthinrealty' :

"Pol Pot Massacre of 1.7 million people, just more of the same, more hand sitting while saying , "Please stop. We like to do more, but no it really isn't our business to step in, however please remember should you survive that we care so very much. Good luck."

The slimey insinuation here is that the Dems are responsible for the mass murderer pol pot. Actually, it was the republican gerry ford administration who sent a weapons and ammo-laden CIA ship Columbia Eagle (at the time the stinking republican gerry ford administration alleged that the ship had been commandeered by dope smokers among the crew) to Cambodian general lon nol, a human paperweight who couldn't fight his way out off of a golf course, who was about to be cashiered. lon nol had been corrupted by the CIA in the hope that he would successfully overthrow Prince Sihanoukh, Cambodia's extremely popular nationalist dictator, who was out of town at the time. lon nol had no support outside of the gerry ford White House and an a corner office in Langley VA, but with the weapons given by the CIA, lon nol managed to secure the airports and the port of Sihanoukville against the return of the Prince. Cambodia, no longer with a sober, competent, popular government, quickly fell to the only other force on the ground, the vile khmer rouge. 2 million dead later, the north Vietnamese chased the khmer rouge to spider holes along the Laotian border.

Thanks, gerry ford and all you other republicans for putting lon nol, and thus pol pot, in charge in Cambodia. May you find the weight of the 2 million souls you doomed so heavy that you quickly join them.

The republicans have not won a war since 1898, and the episode 'truthinrealty' mentioned is a more than usually incompetent exaqmple. Thanks, 'realty' for giving me another opportunity to blow the whistle on you guys.

Btw, the Wikipedia tale of the Columbia Eagle is a CIA hoax.

  238. http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/22/latest-updates-on-irans-disputed-election-3/

The NYT plays catch up to Totten and Sullivan. They did capture the most disturbing gaze from Neda Soltan. Mavis Leno seemed at tears on Larry King.

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on Iran to recount the votes of the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but stopped short of alleging electoral fraud. She also urged Iran to stop using force against demonstrators, free detained opposition members and allow free media reporting.

On Monday, her spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm rejected Tehran's charges of European meddling in Iran's domestic affairs. "We have instead demanded that international laws be upheld," he told reporters in Berlin.” Yahoo

Germany is Iran largest trading partners. Iranians are sending emails to Merkel to really pressure Iran and threaten to suspend trade. Talk is cheap. Der Speigel should put Neda on their cover and ask German corporation why they have no conscience.

“Mottaki criticized the British foreign secretary for his inappropriate and illogical comments on the elections. He blamed British policy for the insecurity and instability in the Middle East “by helping create the Zionist regime decades ago.“
The foreign minister criticized France for what he called irresponsible remarks on the elections and demanded an apology from Paris. Germany also came under criticism as “Berlin’s position on Iran indicated that German officials were intimidated by the Israelis.“ Iran Daily.

But of course this is nonsense. Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been quite silent and Mottaki forgot his updated talking points. This further shows a breakdown of group mindset.

    http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/06/22/iran.crown.prince/

The Shah’s son should have reminded the Mullahs they consented to his father’s coup. Under the Shah, British oil was eventually nationalized and despite Savek and his father’s harsh control of political opposition, fewer died than under the clerical regime strangling Iran today.

How did the Shah first come to power?

“In 1909, during the Persian Constitutional Revolution, Howard Baskerville died in Tabriz while trying to help the constitutionalists in a battle against royalist forces. After the American financial consultant Morgan Shuster was appointed Treasurer General of Persia by the Iranian parliament in 1911, an American was killed in Tehran by henchmen thought to be affiliated with Russian or British interests. Shuster became even more active in supporting the Constitutional revolution of Persia financially.[5] When Shu'a al-Saltaneh (شعاع السلطنه), the Shah's brother who was aligned with the goals of Imperial Russia in Persia, was ordered by Iran's government to surrender his assets to it, Shuster was assigned this task, which he promptly moved to execute. Imperial Russia immediately landed troops in Bandar Anzali demanding a recourse and apology from the Persian government. Eventually, Iran's parliament in Tehran was shelled by General Liakhoff of Imperial Russia, and Morgan Shuster was forced to resign under tremendous British and Russian pressure. Shuster's book The Strangling of Persia is a recount of the details of these events, a harsh criticism of Britain and Imperial Russia.

It was the American embassy that first relayed to the Iran desk at the Foreign Office in London confirmation of the popular view that the British were involved in the 1921 coup that brought Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to power.[6][7] A British Embassy report from 1932 admits that the British put Reza Shah "on the throne". The United States was not an ally of Britain as far as Persia was concerned at that point in time.

Morgan Shuster was soon to be followed by Arthur Millspaugh, appointed as Treasurer General by Reza Shah Pahlavi, and Arthur Pope, who was a main driving force behind the Persian Empire revivalist policies of Reza Shah. But the friendly relations between the United States and Iran were about to change at the onset of the 1950s.” Wiki

By the end of WW2 having first defended Iranian nationalists from the Tzar, after resisting British and Russians meddling, after keeping Iran free from both the Nazis and Soviets, the Nixon administration increased Iranian military spending by 680%. Kissinger didn’t even object to the Shah’s plan to build 26 nuclear plants, many on fault lines. With the influx of 30,000 Americans associated with this military build up, nationalists began to get angry over American influence. The Islamic conservatives were already mad.

“In 1964, the United States extracted a Status of Forces Agreement that exempted American military advisers from Iranian law. As a reward, the Shah received $200 million in loans and credits to buy arms. That agreement angered conservative Islamic opponents of the Shah, especially Ayatollah Khomeini.” Answers.com

Carter failed to see the revolution coming with the convergence of Islamic anger and nationalistic resentment with the Shah’s desire to be a significant player in Cold War. Rather than support the Shah while pressuring him to reform or even abdicate more power to the Parliament, Carter pulled the rug out and the convergence of Iranian sentiment catapulted Ayatolla Khomeni into supreme power.

The rest is history. The convergence has become a nightmarish divergence and America by no means is the villain in Iranian history. More than most nations, we have supported Constitutionalism in Iran. Obama is certainly right in shifting the focus from internal politics to the Rights of Man. Neda is a person Obama can address. The time is edging closer to Obama one on one woth Iranians. As an American, as a human and as a defender of justice. Obama is this sense, has got it right.

  239. How do fight the Supremes craig?

What crushed the Shah was the oil workers strike. An embargo would do the same to the Mullahs, but with Iran the fourth largest oil producer, international greed trumps international justice. Stop gasoline imports. Make the Mullahs pay a price.

What sacrifice will the major powers make in the name of international justice? Over NK? Over Darfur? Over Iran? Over Burma?

What can the West do to press the Chines and Russians when Germany refused to use trade as a weapon dispite the pleas of the Iranian people?

  242. XRepublican,
Norodom Sihanouk made himself king for life and in 1965 while LBJ was in office he alligned himself with the Communist Chinese and North Viet Nam. It was not illogical for the US and UN forces to consider him a target for regime change. DOD arrived at this conclusion while a Democrat was President. That Pol Pot fled into the country side under threat of Sihanouk and teamed up with the KR is hardly the complete fault of the Republicans.

The blame for the 2 million come from the absolute retreat mentality that did not take reprocussions into account. The same kind of horror would have followed an early retreat from Iraq. There is blame all around and I find it strange you wish to paint a grim picture of only the side you came from. Is it from one fire into another?

Hell, let's blame it on the French who hated the King, or even the Japanese, who Noam Chomsky said we fought Viet Nam for in order to keep them in the Western camp.

Let's hear your history of Korea, Palestine, Pakistan/India, Bosnia, Darfur, Iraq and even Iran. I would love to hear how Republicans can account for all the mistakes......

Funny Bob, I think I posted a link to Neda's picture a bit before the media hailed it as the poster of the year. While the image built up fury (though not a whisper from Merkel) I was writing a letter to Der Spiegel asking why they don't run it as a cover and ask why German corporations representing the largest trading partner of Iran doesn't do something. Even a parrot could see that obvious hypocrisy.

When asked what my brilliant next move would be, I said I hoped Obama would speak of the elemnts of the Rights of Man he so cleverly injected into his Cairo Speech. First Netanyahu the wiping boy and mow those Brits. Despite my talk of liberty, from the start until now, I think Obama has been playing this about right, though at some point Reagan's Speech in support of Solidarity might be in order.

And here is another irony that escapes a parrots view: I suggested long ago that the WORKERS could shut down oil in Iran which was how the Shah lost out. Unions baby. That was Reagan's key to Poland and the start of the unraveling. And this from a parrot....While Unions are sinking here and God knows Chavez hates them with a passion more than Uribe, we see in Iran their utility. I was not alone in this prescription however:

    http://hnn.us/blogs/entries/93615.html

One reason to post on this topic Bob is to help shatter some partisan myths. Our assumptions color our expectations. Take this article posted at the Liberal blog CommonDreams

    http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/06/22-0

The articles begin with an arrogant lectured aimed at all who will disagree with the writer, backed up by a series of falsehoods. In somequrters these untruths have become honest mythology. Can we count all the false claims?

To address just a few: the British installed the Shah as a prior post of my showed. Not the Americans. The Mullajs backed the Shah in '53. Americans help defend the founding Constitutionalists in the early 1900s and Mosaddeq abused Parlimnetary and Constitutional law. He was given to crying during speeches and was ignorant of the extent the Soviets had penetrated his political wing. His nationalizing without compensation would have spellled the doom of his hopes. This article is such a perversion of facts I think there is only one regular poster here who would praise it as absolute truth.

In another marvelous hit piece, CommonDreams blast Obama's right turn and his nafarious meddling in Pakistan and afghanistan:

    http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2009/06/22-7

This is probably closer to your views Bob, yes?
Against this intellectual anti-intellectualism stands artisits and journalist like this: http://www.thestoning.com/

  265. Every step of the way
    We walk the line
    Your days are numbered
    So are mine

    Time is piling up
    We struggle and we scrape
    All boxed in
    Nowhere to escape

    The city's just a jungle
    More games to play
I'm trapped in the heart of it
    Trying to get away

I was raised in the country
    Been working in the town
I been in trouble since I
    Set my suitcase down

I ain't got nothing for you
    I had nothing before
    Don't even have anything
    For myself anymore

    Sky's full of fire
And the rain is pouring down
There's nothing you can sell me
    So I'll see you around

    All my powers of expression
    And thoughts so sublime
    Could never do you justice
    Reason or rhyme
There's only one thing that I did wrong
I stayed in Mississippi a day too long

    The devil's in the alley
The mule kickin' in the stall
    Say anything you wanna
    I've heard it all
I was thinking about the things that she said
I was dreaming I was sleeping in you bed

    Walking through the leaves
    Falling from the trees
Feel like a stranger nobody sees
So many things we never will undo
I know you're sorry, well I'm sorry too

Some people will offer you their hand and some won't
Last night I knew you, tonight I don't
I need something strong to distract my mind
I'm gonna look at you till my eyes go blind

Well I got here, following the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
There's only one thing that I did wrong
I stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well my ship's been split to splinters
    I's sinking fast
    I'm drowning in the poison
    Got no future
    Got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothing but affection for those who've sailed with me

Everybody's moving if they ain't already there
    Everybody's got to move somewhere
Well stick with me baby anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

    My clothes are wet
    Tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waiting to be kind
So give me your hand and say you'll be mine

    The emptiness is endless
    Cold as clay
    You can always come back
But you can't come back all the way

Well there's only one thing that I did wrong
I stayed in Mississippi a day too long
Yeah the only thing that I did wrong
Was stayed in Mississippi a day too long
The only thing that I did wrong
Was stayed in Mississippi a day too long

The great thing about dogs is you can treat them like shit and they'll still love you, as long as you feed them.

If you can't handle that, then you need to see a doctor and possibly get medicated. Your late-night diatribes are cries for help... this is the best I can do, or at least the most I'm willing to do. More than you'd like, I realize. Oh well.
