There's nothing like an Obama speech high. Thankfully, I was up early this morning to hear the live broadcast of our President's 6:10 AM ET address to the Muslim world in Cairo. It was a moment that made good on the promise of this man to begin the process of transforming relations and undermining terrorists.
"You have the ability to reimagine the world," Obama to young Muslims at Cairo University.
For the first time since Jimmy Carter's Camp David accords we have a president with the skills, understanding and commitment to make peace in a region that has bedeviled the world for generations. Carter's 1978 brokering of a deal between Egypt and Israel to recognize each other and pursue peace still stands as the only lasting agreement of its kind since those days.
Obama's phenomenal speech gracefully shifted from historical tensions to current conflicts between Muslim nations and the western world. Without taking sides he was not shy about noting the wrongdoing of extremists on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for instance.
Perhaps his most controversial words at home will turn out to be calling Afghanistan a war of necessity, while labeling Iraq a "war of choice." Although Obama has said such things before, his political foes will probably seize upon his decision to say it on foreign soil.
But acknowledging that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake -- or at least seeming to say so -- will probably do more to impress the Muslim world than just about anything else in this historic speech.

"A sheep in Wolffe's clothing?"
"Far from vaulting him to the top ranks of the profession — as happened to White and a parade of other reporters with intimate access to winning presidential candidates —Wolffe’s Obama journey ended with him out of mainstream political reporting, making his living as a public relations operative.
And far from being the toast of Newsweek, which once built its franchise around reporters who were close to the powerful, Wolffe now has a frosty relationship with his former employer."

The Administration's task must be the exploitation of the Obama speech; his words could well have been from God's mouth, but if, through Administration inattention, our detractors are permitted to recharacterize his words, it will all have been for naught.

Again Pres. Obama delivers an excellent speech--beyond that--not sure that it is more than just that.
But now comes the usual media fawning that implies much more than it really was.

Tony, I had Newsweek in 'time-out' for a year because of their unseeming support for a candidate in the last election. I just removed them from that purgatory.
Their magazine is now unreadable. I simply can't read the small print. And the lack of contrast between print and art results in illegibility of what they intend to convey.
It's a mess. So I'm going to drop it completely after many years as a subscriber.

yes... it was an excellent speech....
and since our standing in the world was my number one issue during the primaries and the election..... I am very pleased....
and yes.... actions must now follow the words....
but no matter what the right wing criticism will be.... at least he didn't start his relationship with the Middle East with hostile words like "you know who"...
and on a media note I watched it on CNN..... they had on Christiane Amanpour and Robin Wright afterwards for analysis.... I briefly turned on MSNBC to see who they had on..... Liz Cheney..... what a joke....
I immediately tuned in back on CNN....

"Barack Obama loves the big speech.
The media also love a big speech
And this morning's address in Cairo definitely qualifies as a big-deal speech.
But are speeches enough when it comes to the tangled, treacherous, tribal warfare of the Middle East?
It seems to me that expectations are way out of control."

"But are speeches enough when it comes to the tangled, treacherous, tribal warfare of the Middle East?"
Speeches are part of the process. Of course much action is also needed. But if you do not set the right debate - and put aside some of the misinformation and animosity - you will simply go around in circles.
Also - I think a speech like this has a lot more impact on the Muslim street than it does in America. We have been hearing Obama's Foreign Policy for as long as he has been on the campaign trail.
But I suspect, many Muslims have heard far less - and have also heard twisted characterizations of his words. This is his chance to communicate directly with millions of Muslims and set aside many misconceptions. So on that level - I think the speech is significant.

Wow. I had only seen bits and pieces.
And patd - you're right. That was a really good ending. Not only for the live audience - but for the world as he quoted scripture from the 3 major religions:
We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning, keeping in mind what has been written.
The Holy Koran tells us, "O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another."
The Talmud tells us: "The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace."
The Holy Bible tells us, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
(I hope the Buddhists or Hindus don't feel slighted ; )
The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God's vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth. Thank you. And may God's peace be upon you.

On MSNBC, Norah O'Donnell interviewed Warren Richey, who today reported in the Christian Science Monitor on the oral argument in the Second Circuit in the Ricci case. The interview yet again exposed the deep ignorance of the Media. O'Donnell in particular argued that Sotomayor was an "advocate" in the case. Richey made the inaccurate statement that it is "unusual" for cases such as Ricci to be decided by summary order. Tom Goldstein has already debunked this false claim:

Listened to as much as I could before work. Yeah, Obama was good, as usual. What I was listening for was the response from the audience. I would swear I could feel tension in the room every time he said anything pro-anything-but-Muslim-male. I think his speech was not about the US in general, but about Obama's America, specifically. It did nothing to make me feel any warmer toward those countries.

Interesting that he gave the speech in a country that is functionally a dictatorship the US is propping up, much like Saud'i Arabia and Kuwait. That is what the street has been complaining about for years.
In Turkey women were treated very well in the 70's, were often managers and they have had a female prime minister. Not all Muslims are like the Arab Muslims.
Obama also showed his knowledge of important Muslim tenets, like Zakat. That alone will send an important message.

Blue,
You can't have good wages or peace in an economy where there are more people than jobs. We are fast approaching a condition world wide where about half the human beings will be totally unnecessary and nothing but mouths to feed. The wealthier nations with advanced education can fend off the inevitable by supporting those who can't find work but that can't last forever.

Global warming is injecting more energy into our climate system and weather is going to keep getting more extreme. Drier droughts, bigger hurricanes, more tornadoes, and worse blizzards.
Starvation is going to be more about fewer crops making it to harvest than jobs and productivity. That's why the Pentagon started running it through war game simulations years ago.

Max,
This persona addressing you now does not belong to the person who uses the persona "xrepublican", nor any other participant here, nor the host. That fact has been related to you numerous times in the past, both here and in a private email. One would assume one so perceptive and enlightened, such as yourself, would realize this, but apparently that is not the case. If one spent more time reading the entire thread rather than one's own posts, perhaps one would have drawn that conclusion earlier. The Dark Lord is amused, in light of your frequent characterization of other participants here as "stupid", that you are the only one who does not realize this.
"Lord Skoffington" was a thrice repeated attempt, perhaps because he thought is was too clever to go unnoticed, by the aforementioned participant who defines himself by what he is not, to bait yours truly into an internet squabble, unsuccessfully at that. The genuine-faux-blue-blood of this congregation couldn't care less about whatever it is of which you two speak, and thinks you make a great pair without any interference from him. So let's leave it at that.
Concerning the original topic of this particular thread, and it's title, the Dark Lord thinks the host is a sucker for a good speech. Remember "Palinomania"?

"hey flatus.......did you know that that "up into R for Race" joke was on one of Brother Dave Gardiner's records early sixties?"
Sturg, I thought I had heard from a co-worker back in the late 50s, a fellow (RIP) named Stu Donaldson.
He also told me about this fellow racing down the road in his Cadillac convertible when he comes across a guy in a broken down Model A. Realizing that no one would likely be passing by for a while, he stopped and offered the guy a tow which was gratefully accepted.
Then, it was back on the road again! Wasn't long before he forgot about the Model A.
A while later he passed by a billboard where a town constable was hiding. Zoom!
The constable grabbed his radio and called headquarters. "You won't believe what I just saw. I'm sitting here and this Cadillac goes by doing at least 90. And, there's a Model A on his tail honking for the road!!"

Well it looks like Pres,,Obama has gone and pissed of the Radical Israeli's that live in the occupied territories illegaly,,,they won't want to move back to Israel,,,,,and Netanyahu just lost this one,,,,Great going Obama,,,here is a weak reasoning that they give for staying
Israeli Officials Cite Bush Deal on Settlement Expansion
Interior Minister Promises to See Further Expansions Made
As domestic anger grows over the Obama Administration’s calls for Israel to freeze the growth of West Bank settlements, Israeli officials are citing “clear understandings” made with the Bush Administration starting in late 2002, in which the former President supposedly agreed that the settlements could continue to be expanded within certain boundaries.
Yet Bush-era officials disagreed, saying that the Israeli characterization was “an overstatement” of what that administration had promised. The “road map” the Israeli government signed in 2003 calls for a total freeze on settlement activity, and doesn’t mention any exceptions. Israeli officials say the pledges were simply never written down.
Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai called for the government to “stand up for our principles” and promised to use his office to ensure the continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank. He called for leaders from the settlements to pressure other members of the cabinet for similar pledges.
The Obama Administration has sought a two-state solution involving territory swaps, which would be complicated by the continued expansion of the settlements during negotiations. Israeli officials slammed the plan as “childish and stupid” and have continually promised to ignore the president’s demands.

One thing Obama has going for him is that no one knows if he's bluffing or not. Congress is already fearing for their positions for life, sending a letter to Obama. I'm glad to see him shake it up and speaking plainly of issues hidden in the back closet for decades.

However, I am sure that maxtrue and I are both relieved to read this revelation in lurid snarkington's conclusion.

So many questions ! Really tough ones, too.
Oddly, we find commie China in the position that we played since WWII : we lend a country $$ so that they can buy our grain, weapons, movies, jetliners, and communications/spy services.
Now commie China lends us $$ so that we can buy their clothes, electronics, and happy meals figures. And food. I've been seeing red Chinese fish and canned goods in the grocery stores around here.
My conclusion from this is that sometimes the enemy is a friend in spite of himself.
Our war in Afghanistan may draw militant Uighurs away from red China, but I doubt that it would be more than a handful. The Uighur militans seem focused on the 1300 years of insults hurled at them and Islam by the Han people in general, and the 80 years of insults crafted by the history-worshipping commies in particular.
Our war against the taliban and alqaeda does bring some relief to Iran's theocrats, who would otherwise be faced with an anti-Shi'a Crusade on their eastern border.
My conclusion from this is that sometimes the enemy of your enemy is your enemy.

I was just talking to someone with a military intel background about that the other day Solar. Neither one of us are worried about China. We're not friends, but China isn't imperialistic. So we'll be business and economic partners but I doubt we'll see any military threat. They are very, very smart businessmen though, so hold on to your wallet.
I think people will get tired of sending money to Afghanistan fairly quickly. But Afghanistan and Pakistan have a common enemy in the Taliban that we don't like either, and Pakistan has nukes. I expect the US to be involved in fighting extreme Taliban elements as long as they're alive, we can't afford for them to have power in Pakistan and have access to nuclear weapons.
Iran doesn't have a history of imperialism either. After 9/11 they went out of their way to help us capture Al Queda. There are a lot of Persians with family here in the US and in general the people like us. They are absolutely correct in stating that under the non-proliferation treaty they have a right to use nuclear power. Fareed Zakaria listed several reasons he doesn't thing they'll develop nuclear weapons in an article a while back. They do want to have protection and they'd like the US to stop screwing with them though, and I think they'll take any steps necessary to make that happen. We've been causing grief and death in their country since the 1950's, as Obama pointed out today. We gave Hussein the chemicals to make chemical weapons to drop on their civilians. It will be a long time before we trust each other.
People point out Ahmadinejad's beliefs about the Holocaust and the second coming, but Ahmadinejad has very little power in Iran and that is decreasing daily. I think Obama could open the door to full relations with Iran and many of these obstacles could be overcome after that. Iran needs our help in developing their oil fields, their technology is behind. But like many middle easterners the more you push the more they're going to push back out of pride. That's why I like Obama's approach.
Israel will get recognition of statehood from all arab states if they'll move forward on resolving the Palestinian issue. How Bibi freezes settlements and holds together his coalition government will be the question. I think all the countries in that area are tired of the fighting. Yes, they have a long history. But at the end of the day people want to live, love, eat, and raise children in every country.

Solar,
Yeah, even here it's hard to go into all the details. Books and books have been written about the subjects.
Iran was told we'd drop all sanctions if a western country like France controlled all of the uranium. They'd mine it (they have exclusive rights in parts of Africa) process it, bring it in and install it, then remove it once it was done. Iran said no. Kind of like the two year old that says he can do it himself. And so far they have.
They were also a free reactor that didn't need uranium. Again, no dice. So they have caused a lot of their own problems. On the other hand, they're right. The NPT does give them the right to do what they're doing.
I'm a lot more worried about NK now. Weapons is become a very important part of their economy, and they don't care who they sell to. At one time I thought they were just trying to get leverage in negotiations, now I'm changing my mind.

Just came across something fascinating. My son likes to collect old books. Not valuable ones, just old that strike his fancy. I was leafing through an 8th grade reader that was in use in schools in 1925 and found the poem below. 84 years later it stands as testimony to the way America should treat the world and where recently we have gone so far astray.
The Land Where Hate Should Die
Dennis McCarthy
This is the land where hate should die
No feuds of faith, no spleen of race
No darkly brooding fear should try
Beneath our flag to find a place.
Lo! every people here has sent
Its sons to answer freedom's call;
Their lifeblood is the strong cement
That builds and binds the nation's wall.
This is the land where hate should die
Though dear to me my faith and shrine,
I serve my country well when I
Respect the creeds that are not mine.
He little loves the land who'd cast
Upon his neighbor's word a doubt,
Or cite the wrongs of ages past
From present rights to bar him out.
This is the land where hate should die
This is the land where strife should cease,
Where foul, suspicious fear should fly
Before the light of love and peace.
Then let us purge from poisoned thought
That service to the state we give
And so be worthy as we ought
Of this great land in which we live.

Do you think that some people( intelligent ones) reach a point in their lives ,,,when they think that they don't want to be part of this life any more,,David Caradine ,,if he committed suicide,,,was one of these people,,,,,I thought the same,,with that rich,,game show host that committed suicide,,(forgot his name now) I mean,,,is there a point where they say,,,I know all that I want to know,,,have lived the life that I wanted,,,,so...???
I recorded Cnn,,,,and today they looked like a new organization,,,very good conerage, about Obamas speach,,,,Cristine Amanpour ,is great,,,,and Rick Sanchez,,is starting to be a must watch show,,,,but I just swithced shut it off,,gonna watch the locals,,,,I like Liz Cheney,,,as much as I like her Mother,,and Father,,,zip,,,I won't listen to them period!

DW and I use to get a kick out of his 'no sweat here' interviews during last year's primaries. She dubbed him "baghdad bob" McAuliffe after the war minister who was the most upbeat optimist of Sadam's people as the bombs fell and the walls literally crumbled in the background. :-)

The numbers: McAuliffe 35%, Deeds 29%, and former state Del. Brian Moran 26%, with a ±4.4% margin of error. Two weeks ago, SurveyUSA had the race as McAuliffe 37%, Deeds 26%, and Moran 22%.

It is a bit silly that the right attacks Obama for a so-called concession.
That is, that Iran can pursue nuclear power for energy. A right under the Non-proliferation Treaty (at least that is what I hear - haven't looked into it.)
That allows us to exercise pressure to prevent weaponization - which is also a right under the Treaty.
It is blatant hypocrisy - and demeaning - for the GOP to champion nuclear power as the key to avoiding an energy crisis. They zealously try to deny that to others while demanding it at home.
American Exceptionlism is too often used as a justification for discrimination and elitism - which are unexcusable.

Interesting. Tweety just got a harsh reaction from a Mid-East scholar for suggesting that Obama's speech may influence the Iranian elections.
He said "No." And you should stop saying that. Hmm. It seemed like a nice thought at first - but if that becomes the buzz - it will probably cause a counter-reaction in the Iranian electorate. (Some say the Bin Laden tape influenced 2004...)
People don't like to be told what to do - so in the face of two no-good options - they will do the opposite of what u say just to spite you.
(It is a tangible satisfaction - especially when faced with a choice that almost always has built-in uncertainty.)

There are 13 states with medical marjuana laws
Since 1996, thirteen states have legalized medical marijuana use: AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MI, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT, and WA. Eight of the thirteen did so through the initiative process. Hawaii's law was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor in 2000, Vermont's was enacted by the legislature and passed into law without the governor's signature in May 2004, Rhode Island's was passed into law over the governor's veto in January 2006, and New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007

hey, it's not about Obama keeping his word. He can do that. It's about Islamic and Israeli leaders meeting his challenge, that's the test. If they fail, screw 'em.

Hah! Give em a little Ron Paul treatment for a change.
That would work for us for awhile - until we were called back the next time.
I say we do our best to resolve it right here and now.
(We are the "change we have been waiting for" - may be a corny line - but is the call to service that everyone is searching for.)
We can do better (especially when working together instead of against). And on the (sorta) bright-side . . . recent history has set the bar pretty low.

Sorry chloe, I was just taking advantage of your comment to make fun of Texans. I lived in California 24 years, but if you remember it you weren't there.
The state of California is split dark lord. The people of orange county and the central valley have no sense of humor and would never be caught smoking. Balances out the coasts so they don't fall into the ocean.
I like learning the phrase so-so in different languages. In Turkish it's soyle boyle, pronounced shoylee boylee. I've heard in Spanish it's mas o menos . French comme si, comme sa. Just a fun term in many languages.

Dark Lord,
33 million people and a major economic downturn in industries heavily placed in California. Add an extremely high drop out rate, a large prison population, and a huge influx of illegal aliens that the Federal government will not enforce laws or pay for since they aren't enforcing laws.
Marijuana has nothing to do with it except possibly a means to keep smiling some how.

Well, CC, one could, as some have, question the benefit of making concessions to the "Muslim world", but saying for the sake of argument it is at least of some benefit, the duplicity of those concessions in light of the current military presence in the region compounded with the political instability of said region are no less daunting, good speech or no. Time will tell.

Democratic Primary voters MoE 5%
Creigh Deeds (D) 30 (13)
Brian Moran (D) 27 (22)
Terry McAuliffe (D) 26 (36)
Undecided 17 (29)
This is a stunning two-week gain for downstate Senator Creigh Deeds, and an incredible stumble by former DNC chair Terry McAuliffe. Undecided Democrats started to make up their minds, and it looks like they broke 2-1 for Creigh Deeds over Brian Moran; Terry may have shed his voters in that ratio as well.

Obama delivered a very carefully crafted speech. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8082862.stm
For those wanting to pick it apart, there are ample places to do that. Why did Obama not finish Lincoln’s quote? Why did he ignore the large number of Muslim clerics who promote hatred and jihad while laying blame to a "small number" of extremists.
I could go on, but that would ignore what the speech was meant to be, not what various people wanted it to be. As my fortune cookie said at lunch today, "Debate is not for victory, but for progress." Obama was highly selective and manipulative in order to encourage a debate, an opening of minds. He was forceful enough I think, in stating Liberal Democratic ideals and clever enough to contradict paragraph leading "gestures" with subtlety reasserting bottom lines of human rights, representative government and freedom of choice in a society that tolerates opposing views. Yes, a clear rhetorical Obamian flip flop I rather enjoyed. It was not designed to be a fair reading of America's view, but rather a therapy session with a tough audience. I agree with Craig that Obama did well and I would say to Solar, I am proud.
Despite this necessary and well delivered speech, what we do on the ground is important. There are rumors the Muslim Brotherhood was given special seating which could only infuriate Mubarak. I am sure his government's intelligence chiefs are looking out at threats involving more than a "small number" or nearly as poorly organized as Obama suggests. If so, why would Yemen, Somalia, Lebanon, Gaza, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq be so contested and hang in such balance? Why would Obama need to be protected by an Army?
I am saddened however to see the Political Machine here continue in hypocrisy this time enabled by Hillary Clinton:
http://www.investigativeproject.org/1055/clinton-call-on-obamas-speech-includes-jihad
First, this is not consistent with the President's words and second it politically stupid. Let's be honest, were we to take his speech as a fair reading of American Principle and the degree terrorism is promulgated by "religious Muslim clerics and leaders" we would be unsatisfied with what Obama said. Colonialism and Israel hardly explains the State of the Muslim world which fixates on the 1 % of Muslim land liberated after the Allies defeated the Muslim Ottoman Empire, a point Obama did not mention. And after agreeing to protect the many Jews living in North Africa and the Middle East, Muslims forced them out of homes they had for centuries until few remained. Even now, new Palestinian settlements go up, many filled with non Palestinian Muslims, many prepared to fight a long and religiously driven jihad. But then this would be taken as lecturing and affect was more important than substance. And Obama did put forth some ideological bottom lines, none I can really argue with despite the bending of context and omission of certain "truths". I do not feel Obama argued equivalency for more than the right of peaceful people to co-exist. On deeper issues he did not give up principle, though promising aboslute honesty, he delivered a very calculated speech the street might not buy.
My take on what is really going on with ISrael at the moment is this: "Mr. President, I am your best friend. You can blow the settlement issue up as much as you like. You can act like this is Celebrity Apprentice and make me the boogie man. We both know this will look good to the Muslims. If settlements are the price we pay for a real peace, God Bless you. You deserve a chance to play your hand and see what you can manage, but understand there is a clock and Israel is not about to concede our backyard to crazies. Lets see if this gambit works before we put neutron bombs in those bunker busters and do what we must. As you said, we lost more to Germans than exist in Israel today."
Bush did certainly kill and thwart AQ, even causing the Iranian nuclear program to blink, but Obama made a good thrust into the belly of the Muslim mindset and this is what AQ feared. We cannot contain threats with US forces alone.
There will many on the Left not pleased with this speech. There will be many who fail to understand why Obama twisted some quotes, omitted some principles and talked mostly of peace.
No matter what actions we may be forced to do in the coming months and years, Obama reminded us today that it is critical we walk into the lion's den and deliver powerful messages. This is something our last President was unfotunately not blessed with the ability to do.
And I rather doubt the wheels behind the door has stopped moving http://www.nasdaq.com/aspx/stock-market-news-story.aspx?storyid=200906040353dowjonesdjonline000515&title=us-military-aid-at-stake-in-lebanon-elections

Dark Lord - I like you just fine even when I think you're nuts and/or unfair. And I'm not bored with this persona.
Solar - re the game show host, his name was Ray something - maybe Harris. I remember reading re him, and in my opinion, he was very very depressed. The words Carradine apparently wrote seem depressed, too. It's hard to describe - it's a point of view which can put things in extremely bland words.
The mental dialogue can be very calm and resigned. I think it's all too easy to under-estimate this cindition - it is deadly.

I have reminded folks here that there are some palastinian families that are living in the same house,,from the time of Jesus,,until the present...but to be fair,,,step by step is the best way,,,,too much at one time,,might be counter productive,,,,little by little,,,and we can make corrections on the way?

"Indeed, we can recall the words of Thomas Jefferson, who said: 'I hope that our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us that the less we use our power the greater it will be.'"-Obama
Very Taoist. I guess Jefferson is one of the more Eastern of our founding fathers.

I think maybe one of the most telling signs is how people react to absolutely anything. For the first 50 or so years of my life my reactions were self-defeating at the very least, except I think in the classroom. It was a different me in there. Many people with depression can function very well except in their own lives.

You're still trying to find a cause Solar. Sometimes people are just depressed, like they have brown eyes.
Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome causes severe depression and can take years to get over.
Uni-polar (depression) and bi-polar disorders often afflict creative people. I think the randomness in the brain that allows creativity causes disharmony and depression.
Tthe endocrine system may be all screwed up and seratonin and endorphin (your morning exercise) levels are skewed, sometimes by the amount of sunlight available.
And sometimes it's situational. Like being laid off from a job and wondering how you're going to survive or watching your 2 year old go through cancer treatment.
I think we need to stop curing people with depression (go for a walk) unless you're a professional and just be a friend that keeps an eye out for mood swings. The breakdown of community has robbed us of one of our most powerful support systems, especially in children that haven't had a chance to build coping systems.
And now for something completely different.

Warren, not to spoil the Obama narrative, but Jefferson and many of the Founders did not have a very flattering view of Muslims, well their polity. If I am not mistaken Jefferson kept the Koran for less than admiring views. The Treaty Jefferson observed did not end the problems or his onjections to Islamic ideology. And Obama cut short Lincolns quote which ended in FOR THE PEOPLE. Nor did Obama quote from some troubling passages of the Koran.
He tried to have it both ways on the issue of not telling others what to do. He followed that by a list of exceptions which fairly describes what we hold important.
The following is a somewhat factual commentary on the speech. I was struck by the promise of real honesty which did not deliver too. This was more a stroking effort and I think honesty was in reference to what Egyptians usually hear, not what many Americans think is true. While I understand this commentators objections below, because I feel the speech had a "purpose" beyond balanced factuality, I have cut Obama some considerable slack -as the Hitler did not create Israel (see Congressional resolution of 1922), nor is the behavior of Israel nor their "negotiating" peace anything comparable to Germany or the Hamas Charter.
http://www.spectator.co.uk/melaniephillips/3670626/obama-in-cairo.thtml
Still, for reasons I have already stated, I think Obama was effective. I do not think however, he could have convinced an American audience of the facts and equivalencies he painted for the Egyptions, not did he praise their civilization's achievements before the rise of Islam. He also mentioned the difficulties of displaced Palestinian Christians. I am confused. Christians have their problems with Muslims in Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere, not in Israel. And what of Jew's welcome in Muslim lands these last 90 years?
Nor did Obama point out that more than a million Muslims live as Israelis. Where in the Muslim world do we find that?
Posted by: maxtrue
| June 4, 2009 11:27 PM
"but Jefferson and many of the Founders did not have a very flattering view of Muslims"
So what max. My old roomate was Muslim and I do have a "very flattering view of Muslims."
I respect the founding fathers - but they would be turing in their graves if you start invoking them to support dogma.

And perhaps you could quit viewing this as the "Obama narrative" and start seeing it for what it really is: history.
Posted by: warren

I am sure Obama said, "MIchelle, look, come here, I'm writing history." And in making history, one should be true to history. Obama used Jefferson and Lincoln without giving full context to their views.
While I excuse his less than honest pitch, his mission was important and his purpose did not allow him the option of complete disclosure.
Warren, you are not the only one with Muslim friends. Again, we were talking about Jefferson. I don't think anything I said would cause our Founders to spin in the grave, but I am not sure they would want the blood of US soldiers and treasure defending Muslims to go unspoken before their great assembly.

Warren, there is much in Obama's speech I could blast. It is a slanted speech designed as a sales pitch. A sales pitch for America. I understand that, so I do give Obama a lot of slack here, unlike the Right. I think he intentionally slanted the speech to make it more effective which was the reason for giving. A more honest speech would have alienated the listeners. He framed things to give AQ as bad a slap as he could given the sentiment of the crowd. I was suprised he didn't praise Egypt for standing up to these extremists in Gaza and from Lebanon and offering peace to Israel in exchange for land....
My high grade does not take away the problems which my recent link to Spectator identified. Not for me at least, and only time will tell if Obama really believes the history he implied.
Yes, it was historic. Where it leads I do not know. That would involve how much of the speech OBAMA BELIEVES and how much moderate Muslims take to heart. Right now the Muslim world is either agressing or failing apart with some exceptions.
So don't try to spin my comments here as attacking Obama. My concerns are how effective a speech can be and whether the speech really revealed what Obama thinks, such as if the missing line to Lincoln is NOT IMPORTANT, ot that a small number of extremists threaten numerous Muslim nations and the security of the Western world.
We can take most speeches and given the right context they shift in importance and meaning. Some speeches of MLK and others do not, but they are rare.

Max:
First, he used Jefferson's and Lincoln's words. And the truth of those words. I don't see how you taking examples from their lives distorts the plain meaning of those words.
Second, look in a history book in 20 years. Tell me if you read about the first time America elected a black President and Obama's speech in Cairo.

I know how much you enjoy being correct in your prognostications and I'm curious tonight. So here's a slow pitch softball for you, if you don't mind:
Will Ahmadinejad win the election next week?
And it just require one word without any caveats or qualifications please.

Don, I live in NYC. I bet throughout my life I have befriended people from more countries than most. Everyday I come in contact with the international world here in the city and I love it. To describe me as Archie Bunker is rather insulting as you obviously confuse having a different strategic or historical view as being a closet racist or bigot. That does not reflect on me. It reflects on you. I played in a rock band for years, went to a liberal arts college and have never worked for somebody other than myself. It amazes me what assumptions people make just because they don't buy your talking points.

He suggested that Jefferson kept that Koran because he felt it was sacred, yes? He left out Lincoln's FOr the People. He was twisting words and history to convey something that isn't MOST HONEST which was what he promised. No it wasn't itellectually honest, but it was emotionally honest. I believe in what Obama was trying to do. Do you get that? Sometimes a task requires distortion. He distorted the facts to be appealing.
ANd it is important he is appealing. The alternative is grim.

Back from the Iron Works. Long day.
Nothing will stop my oven. I mean nothing .
When I got the job of "Field Coordinator" . it was only because "Spiffy & Tory" had crashed Tory's Jeep into a cattle guard in a drunken haze. That made me the last good hand in the field. I had 8 squirrels to tend that morning, and two "experimental drills " broke - down - in - the - hole "
I gave 10 gallons of ATF to the best of the bunch, and I said , " Kid you get that steel out of the hole." " You pour this ATF into that hydraulic tank as fast as you can, and you trip that pipe out of that hole. , call me when you're done. " He was 117 stations back. from the lead drill. . A station is 110 feet in the oil field. He had 25 feet of steel dead in the ground. Somewhere between him and the lead drill was another one of the these things. I went and got that steel out of the ground , I had 5 worthless people sitting on a dead volcano when I was solving these problems.
It was the morning I became a manager. It was all very clear, each move came in it's natural order, I had an answer for everyone.
I solved every problem that day , and when Denver called, and wanted to know what the fuck happen . I told them.
I sent those 2 pieces of shit drills back to Denver the next day.

"Warren, there is much in Obama's speech I could blast."
Don't bother. I just heard it all from Hannity and Newt (can you believe that the Grinch was actually more balanced.)
You know how Hannity has that "Liberal Translation." Someone needs to start a "Literal Translation" - that untangles all of the misinformation that he spews out on TV and radio.
(but we better find someone unemployed - cause it would be a full-time job.)

if I am not mistaken, in Texas, any amount of marijuana less than 4 oz is now considered a misdemeanor. The fine is pretty heavy but you can't get life in prison anymore. At one time that was the case. It is still a major hassle but not life ruining anymore. Been that way for about 10 years now.

I believe Archie was from Queens Max. And there was nothing closet about him. Unless you know something about Carroll O'Conner we don't.
I don't think Archie ever thought of himself as a bigot though, that was part of the charm.
Ever travel overseas?
Nevada used to be one of the most strict states when it came to pot. Which always seemed a bit odd.
I never cared for pot, and like the new super bred stuff even less. I remember rings of 40 or 50 people sitting in a park on The Hill in Boulder Colorado (Berkeley's summer home) sharing joints, pipes and what ever in the 70's. No one cared as long as you didn't do something stupid. I have seen it destroy lives as often as I've seen it bring relief to cancer patients. I worry about the children the most.

Warren, I am not Hannity or Rush or Newt. My points that could blast Obama involve history, comparisons (Gaza is no NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP) and ground realities, but as a speech designed to appeal to an adversarial audience, I give Obama an A.
Hannity does not give Obama an A, because he is too stupid to acknowledge why AQ is scared and why the mission Obama is on is more important than the "facts" he may spin. Obama wasn't talking to AIPAC.
So even Hannity may be right about some problems with lines Obama delivered, but he mistakes these flaws as something sinister BECAUSE HE FAILS TO GRASP THE STRATEGIC GAME BEING PLAYED. We will need to go a bit further in time to see if this effort brings results, but Hannity can not know that now.
His rant therefore is based on fear of imagined consequences when the consequence that Obama may have achieved is to win some support from a crowd we could surely use in our struggle with Muslim extremism. Hannity somehow thinks Islamic Reformation is unnecessary in the struggle we are facing. LIke Obama, Hannity has his own narrarative which is a constant expectation of failure and unpatriotic capitulation. I love how more and more of his guests tale issues with his postions --and they're mostly conservatives. I think Hannity serves as a media check bringing up issues the other media is too in bed with LIberals to run. That doesn't mean we should take his intellect too seriously......

c. I think don1one accused redChina of not having Imperialist ambitions. I think the redEmperors have amply demonstrated their Imperial Claims regarding Tibet, Uighurstan, Viet Nam, the Paraceles, the Trans Amur, and Taiwain. As far as I know, redChina still claims all of the territories that were ever held by any previous Chinese Imperial Dynasty, with the possible exception of Korea and Mogolia.
Of those present and former Chinese occupied countries, only Viet Nam has been able to give the red Emperor's army a bloody reversal. If it weren't for that embarrassment in the late 1970s, who knows how far the bloody old tyrant's claims would run ?

Rez, as far as my predictive powers, I do not know with high confidence if Ahmadinejad will win, but I do know I suggested Sotomayor's wise woman remarks were not just a one time gaffe Obama covered for. I objected only if she was suggesting experiance can show you not to follow the law. Seems Sotomayor has made that remark as early as 1994 and more mazingly I suggested she might like Scalia...
"The speeches also reveal she has spoken highly of Justice Antonin Scalia, whom she introduced during a September 2001 event at Hofstra Law School as a powerful thinker who has spoken about the role of federal judges in "illuminating ways."
"I understand Justice Scalia's jurisprudence to begin with a proposition that we should all agree to - namely, that judges should try to interpret the law correctly, and without personal or political bias," Sotomayor said." CQ

Newt is a smart guy. An opportunist looking for an opportunity, but a smart guy. His personality was always a deal breaker but I know people who have met him and say he is rather a pleasant guy in person.
I think he jumped to fast to call Sotomayor racist, but then look at what Democrats did to Hillary and Bill.

xrep, I think you're naming countries that China believes historically are already part of China. They've never been interested in going out and conquering Korea or Japan or Australia for instance. They wanted nothing to do with Britain. In fact it was the other way around. They put up the wall because they were constantly being invaded.
The pot comment was a general comment Max. Just reminiscing over the little bit of the 70s I could remember.
I didn't realize you were liberal. It's quite a bit different when you're in a foreign country, living locally and speaking their language. Try observing the Ramadan fast in a country where it hits 120 during the day. You'll never be so glad to see sunset.

Interesting thought max. I agree that this Country still has a lot of trouble discussing race. (That is why I loved The Chappelle Show ; )
But I think Sonia's confirmation hearings provide an opportuntiy to continue the conversation Obama started in Philadelphia with "A More Perfect Union." And there are some really interesting debate to be had regarding the role of a judge - if Capitol Hill can just get past the buzz words.

So I am on Obama's mailing list from back when I was allowed to contribute.
And I can't remember Ax sending me an email. But he was the one who forwarded around a clip of the speech. I am glad he is on the case. Here is what he had to say:
Hello -
As a Senior Advisor to the President, I'm here in Cairo, Egypt where I watched President Obama deliver an unprecedented speech calling for a new beginning for the United States and Muslim communities around the world.
We all know that there has been tension between the United States and some Muslim communities. But, as the President said this morning, if all sides face the sources of tension squarely and focus on mutual interests, we can find a new way forward.
The President outlined some big goals for this new beginning in his speech -- including disrupting, dismantling, and defeating violent extremism. It was a historic speech, and since many Americans were asleep at the time it was given we wanted to make sure you had a chance to see it:
[clip]
Majority-Muslim countries around the world are filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives, just as in America. Indeed, part of what makes America great is having nearly seven million Muslim Americans living here today and enriching our culture and communities.
(a little fluffy but nice - good thing we have Obama, HRC and Rahm to bring the steel.)
We can extend that kind of relationship abroad. It won't always be easy, but if we make an effort to bridge our differences rather than resigning ourselves to animosity, we can move toward a more peaceful world over time.
Thank you,
David Axelrod
Senior Advisor to the President

OK Newt - now you are really living in a fantasy world. He said to Hannity - "Imagine the speech Reagan would have given in Cairo."
He wouldn't have given one. And I don't think HRC could have made that speech either. Obama was uniquely qualified to make the speech.

So immediately after Hannity makes the "empathetic case" for the Ricci case, e.g., firefighter suffering from dyslexia, spent $1000 on books, quit second job to study, would have gotten promoted, - that "doesn't sound like equal justice" - and then Newt says its "Not equal justice . . . We don't have the rule of empathy - we have the rule of law." I didn't hear Newt or Hannity speak about any law when they talk about how the case should have came out. (Maybe they should ask Sonia or read the D. Ct. decision).
They don't even realize the contradiction as they step over one another to get out their talking points.

Suicide hotlines field calls as prices fall and money woes mount
By Miles Moffeit
The Denver Post
The phone calls usually come in the evening after the machinery goes silent on farms across the country. The callers speak of dwindling cash flows, crumbling marriages. Some admit they're holding a loaded gun.
Across a wide swath of rural America, increasing numbers of farmers are considering taking their lives.
The nation's largest network of crisis hotlines for agricultural workers reports a spike of 2,000 calls through May compared with the same period last year — a 20 percent increase.
In Colorado, the number of suicides among farmers and ranchers has risen in the past five years: Fourteen took their lives in 2008, twice the number reported by the state's coroners in 2004.

But, Solar, this is the down part. From everything you've posted, I don't think you understand what real depression is. It's not feeling sad. Some of the happiest people you know are depressed and have been for years. It's easy to fool people and that's what you want to do cuz you think it's your fault and you're ashamed, and don't want to be a nuisance or spoil a party. If you think it's easy to spot, you may overlook it in someone you love one day.
