  3. Pat, your not saying you also have a wascally wabbit are ya? I can help. Chicken wire, that's the ticket.

I stepped outside and saw the most beautiful beginning of the sunrise. I went for the camera and no camera. Panic!. I finally found it. I left it in my truck. Whew! The sky had changed somewhat but still beautiful.

What do they say, red sky in morning.....?Nah, it's suppose to be beautiful today. A beautiful day for a party. check out this sky.

Flatus, don't try to pretend you aren't up yet. I know better.

  5. I think I'm ready for the party. All that's left is to shave my legs. Oh, and do all the meat. I have brisket, it's cooked, just have to heat it up and drown it in Carol's kick ass BBQ sauce that simmered all day yesterday.

Then I'm gonna smoke 4 chickens on the smoker and BBQ 2 on the pit, and where am I going to do all that sausage? Somewhere. Move over chickies.

I think all my peeps at work are on this diet. I hope they take today off because I don't like leftovers.

  6. Anyone want to come to my party? Chloe I think it's only a 3 hour drive for you. I'm sure some of my other peeps are going to drag other people here.

The nurse I worked with who invited a friend who invited a friend who brought a friend who brought along that convict is coming today. I told her I would appreciate if she would run "Wants and Warrants" on her invites today. Remember that?

It was a little joke but I'm not sure she found it funny.

  9. Oh and for the video you put up this morning Craig....Obama shouldn't have mentioned that the war in Iraq was a war of choice. No one has figured that out yet. Shhhh. And Shuster, saying that Obama's speech "electrified many in the middle East", not a great choice of words. Brings back some bad memories. Abu Ghraib for one.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | June 6, 2009 7:47 AM

  10. And Craig, you looked good as usual. I liked your little shinner story. I tell my shinners and my worms when I put them one the hook that they waited their entire lives for this moment. They had a purpose driven life and the time is now, go get um.

  11. Carol, have a great party!!

Stinky sends the leftovers home with the guests leaving a single meal for us. That makes 'kitchen management' much less complicated.

Don't forget post time is 6:27 Eastern. And you have to be a little early because we have to get you seated and strapped in the racing sulky. Calvin's been working all week trying to turn the Bird into a pacer just, and only just, for this race. Hold on if he starts galloping!

See you at the track; bring your guests!

Anyone interested in exotic wagering, I heard a bartender friend of mine lay out this plan last night. He's playing superfectas, or whatever they call getting the right order on the first four finishers and taking Charitable Man to win, Mine That Bird for third and all the other horses for second and fourth. Says it will cost him $56.

Now that I think of it, if he has that kind of money to throw around, why do I bother tipping him for reaching in a cooler and pulling the cap off a bottle of Coors Light?

    Have a good day all.

what was that blond singer's name that had an album called "I Shaved My Legs For This?" Had the hit on "Strawberry Wine" before. Drawing a blank. I always thought that Shaved My Legs was a funny title and showed great personality on her part even tho she probably had no input.

  30. To comment on Craig's subject. This is just one more example of what I call, "What Is Wrong With These People?".

How can one whole branch of the political spectrum be so totally tone deaf that they simply don't realize how their words sound. Have they spent so many years hating and being angry about everything, that they are incapable of anything else. If that requires lying and attempting to sabotage a president they dislike or taking actions that will injure the country, well that is just too bad if it will put them back in power.

  43. Craig. Nice threads (cloths).

You say that we ignore commenting on the subject of the thread. three comments of your interview with Shyster.

1st. Thanks for telling him that the party out of power seems like they want the party in power to fail. That is what I believe. They just take turns at it. I can't understand it. Should this not be very clear by now. So that there are more and more center of the road politicians elected. I feel that would be better for the country as a whole.

2nd. About Israel. You said it just right. There are more Jewish people that want peace. They also want a two part state. There are also (it seems to me) more Jewish reporters that say the same things. That goes for Islamic's also.

3rd. this one not related to the interview. I can't seem to remember you ever being on CNN. Is there something in your MSNBC contract that keeps you from appearing on just the one?. I know that I have seen other pundits on more than one station.

Posted by: TruthinReality Author Profile Page | June 6, 2009 10:43 AM

  53. Good morning all. I note some remarks from last night and this morning. While I gave Obama a high grade in his speech, I did so because of the obvious nature of Obama's mission. The speech was immediately denounced by AQ, HIzb'Allah, Iran's relgious leader and various other terrorist leaders.

It would be wrong however to group all objections into one GOP and call it partisan. The following is not a partisan advocate and had strong words against Bush's invasion of Iraq.

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/06/15_hard_questions_about_the_ca.html

And while he speaks from a conservative venue at American Thinker where half of my posts are rejected due to the shots I take at their writers, one cannot discount the many points where Obama fails the "fact" test. To point one item out; Iran calls most shots for Hizb'Allah and Hamas making an agreement between Palestinians and Israelis, something Solar ignores.

I would suggest that a Party that cheerleads itself past serious policy questions runs the risk of unintended consequence. Just look at the GOP.

The blood lost at Normandy had alot to do with the failure of the West to understand its policy towards Germany. Had FDR been listening to KOs or Huffington the outcome could have been frightening and

I am glad to see that Obama is leaning a bit center these last few weeks. A big test will come when NK tries to ship illegal arms or if HIzb'Allah wins in Lebanon. So far we have seen just words.........but they do have a role organizing others for the struggles to come.

  56. Jamie, as the record shows, Sotomayor used her wise women speech since 1994. Had the GOP done that, Oberman would be salivating. And have you noted the State Secret defense over at SCOTUS?

All I will add is that in 2002, pundits were writing the obit of the Democratic Party. Democrats ought wonder about the rationality of doing the same. Obama is on ice as far as foreign policy and unemployment is going up not down. Our manufacturing is being hollowed out on Obama's watch. There are so many trip wires, Obama has already shifted to center a bit.

I'm not talking about ALL Republicans. I'm talking about that branch that seems to have taken the party prisoner. They represent every prejudice that has ever brought shame to this country and the sooner they crawl back into their caves and pull the rocks in after them, the better off this country will be.

    Posted by: jamie44.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | June 6, 2009 11:20 AM

  58. Ree is quite right and as I said yesterday, I could blast several large holes in Obama's speech. Now there is talk about the nasty Republicans bringing up objections in an effort to vilify all who object. Is that fair and balanced?

Yes, I understand what Obama was trying to do in his good will gesture, but words do matter. Although I give him a good grade, his speech does leave open the administration to counters of confused ideas and poor historical understanding. No, Obama did not mention the Muslim intolerance that ejected Jews from North Africa and the Middle East before and after the establishment of Israel. Nor did Obama mention that more than amillion Muslims are Israeli citizens who enjoy more rights than Muslims in MUslim countries. How can you leave out such a fact. Muslims far better in ISrael than Egypt.

I can understand why a more factual speech would not have gone over well, but Obama must worry that were he to continue this slanted look at things in an effort to win support from Muslims, the intellectual basis for progress in a debate from both moderate sides will be obstructed by incorrect facts and a US policy Americans did not vote for.

Posted by: maxtrue Author Profile Page | June 6, 2009 11:33 AM

  59. Jamie, if you're talking about the Rush crowd, I agree. It is easy however to link most GOP to him and the other midless pundits.

    I note your clarification.

    Thanks

  60. As most of you know by now, my brain is set on permanent free association. Today it while deciding what to write about the word "shine", it led to a remarkable musical discovery that I'm sure all the musicians here already know, but for me it was "How long has this been going on?" ... Ry Cooder

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6efQ_GyQW3o

Up above it was asked would you rather be minimally multi lingual or an expert in a single language. There is another choice people make. Would you rather know a little bit about darn near everything or be a complete expert in one thing?

I have an enormous respect for experts and people who devote their lives to knowing everything than can know about one field. I went the other way in order to talk to them, and just in case you are at all curious how I got to Ry Cooder:

    Manic Monday prompt word: Shine
    Casablanca - Dooley Wilson
That's Why They Call Me Shine
Usually cut because of racial stereotypes
    1910 song by Cecil Mack
    Performed by George Walker
    Last recorded by Ry Cooder
    Not available on You Tube
Now I have to buy some Ry Cooder DVDs

And THAT is the edited list of topics that went whizzing by.

Max, About Sotomayor's "wise woman" remark, I don't think it enters into her judicial acts at all, but as I told a friend, if you ask any woman of a "certain age" if they think they are wiser than the majority of men they know, you would get an almost universal agreement that they were.

Remember that I dislike both party's....the R's more so than the D's.

I often compare what is going on with the two party's with construction. I have had to go and repair very poor workmanship of another contractor. The price that I charge Depends on the damage that they have done to that house. Some have done extensive damage. Some minor damage.

At that point. The only one that is really really suffering is the poor homeowner that wants to live in their new house. I always feel sorry for the home owner. Not the goof ball that caused all of the damage.

The contractor that did the damage ( almost all of them) never admit fault. They continue to deny any relief to the homeowner. So I have too....by giving them an honest price...do the work...do it right...and get them into their house a fast as possible.

All of this time...I know that the other contractor is waiting for me to F- up. They still don't have any remorse. They still don't have any empathy for the homeless home owner.

This is how I see your Republican party. They did the worst job in history...they still don't care about the country as a whole...they want the D's to fail.

The people in the middle...the Independents want both of them to succeed....but know that they won't...because all that they want is the power that comes from the large Corps...so they give into the lobby's that (the corps reps) bribe them....all of them...take a good look at the ones that have been there for a long time. They have capitulated...with the condition that they become RICH!!

They now seem to say that it's my turn to make the big $...Stop defending the R's...start pushing for the middle of the road politicians. Today there is no doubt im my mind...that you have strong republican leanings,,,,could this be your need for Israel to go and bomb Iran?.

Have u joined the R's because of this...just like J. Lieberman did. I believe this is why he really ran as an independent. I have always voted third party...always will...I also want people like Chuck Haggle...a man of principle that is in the middle...to run for office again...he will have my vote any time he wants it...for any office he wants.

True Republican values have not been in play for a long period. The house cleaning of 2006 is the pivot point and in fact non Republican fiscal policy was in play long before.

I took some time to think about that post. There are a lot of good honest Republicans. There are a lot of Greedy Dem's in office also...they all they do is to thing of how to line their own wallets.

What I said. goes for the lot of them. We need to stop defending our own tribe. Our own team...just for the sake of winning. I wish that Rand Paul was running for my district...I would vote for him...he is a Republican looking to do the right thing.

Ping...I make those statements...knowing that Bush...before he left office...(and the d's in congress) did nothing for the people that were losing their homes..they are out on the street now...more will be.

One for U. I like putting this one out there every now and then.

The fact that the U. S. was NOT founded as a Christian nation...Was early stated in the terms of a treaty with Tripoli. Drafted in 1796 under George Washington and signed by John Adams in 1797.

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it s declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the countries."

  100. Solar it seems we are both contractors and both Independents. I wouldn't be so quick to let homeowners off the hook, though I have witnessed homeowner abuse. I don't know where you work but here in NYC, homeowners (who have SOME monry) are quick to hire anybody that gives them a lower price than the next. While I know illegals personally and find them hardworking, exploitation of them by contractors (who are quite pathetic as an average) costs me dearly every day.

If you want to play the anology game, Democrats are like the contractors who promise you the moon while ignoring some serious issues, It looks good on paper, so they assume it will be easy to do. THey often over look site conditions and leave out the hidden costs. They are so quick to make a deal they never discuss these deeper details and have little problem hiring illegals despite their advocating for their emancipation. They tout VCO envirnomentally friendly paint without knowing if the plant that makes it pollutes and often buy lower grade supplies like tile from Home Depot to save money for themselves, even though the procelien wears often quite quickly or imperfections go beyond 15%.. And when things go bad and I'm called in, they claim the owner never asked or paid for them to fix the systemic things that make finishing work quite pointless. So I could play that game too.

The difference between us is that you are more Liberal than Democrats or Republicans. I find neither centered enough. I do not charge alot and I do jobs that are worthy of photgraphing when done. I lower my price when clients can't afford to pay more. As a result I don't have a great deal in savings. I find local government that is supposed to keep things safe and inspected, a system of corruption and greed equalled only by Co op boards. Unions often do not deliver the effort illegals put into their work. I once watched ten Union people skim a sidewalk with concrete. They al talked on cell phones and whistled at the women while two low level workers did all the work. It did not require eight other people to supervise. This gives you an idea of what a government run healthcare program will look like.

I say we are screwed by both parties and have been recently encourage by Obama's slight move center. I suspect you have a problem with that.

Don wonders why Islam isn't written on the walls of Federal buildings. From what Jefferson deduced from his Koran and the concept of personal liberty he saw in Muslim countries was obviously not inspiring enough. He didn't call non Christian infidels, nor consider it okay to lie to non Christians as an acceptable way to con them when dealing from a postion of weakness. It was the very revolutionary notions our Founders had to spread LIberalism that made them skeptical of Sharia law. Despite the achievements of Islam (often in its more tolerant mode) they don't surpass the achievements of Persia, Egypt, Iraq, before they fell to Islam. Of course many Muslims have taken to a more moderate understanding of Islam. I have no doubt that Islamic Reformation would create an era of new Islamic acheivement. The question is how we get there. When faced with a failure of many gestures to Muslims that eneded in the beheading of his envoys, Ghengis Khan was quite brutal. That was the end of Islam's last great empire. The Ottoman's later, though not really an empire, subjected Muslims to their whim. And our Founders fought against that trying to get the world to liberate Greece. Jews dided at Massada defending the Middle East along side Arabs against the Romans.

Note Obama's tougher line against NK today. The test will be when Kimmie wants to ship illegal materials for money. Will Russia or China once again provide export cover in defiance of UN mandates? Will Obama interdict?

Merkel promises to help in getting Iran to blink. What the media fails to state is that Germany is Iran's biggest trading partner and German multinationals have given the dual use materials Iran wants in defiance with the German government's mandates. Merkel simply needs to follow the intent of EU law and Iran would blink. Should we forget that the "reformer" running in Iran was one of the founders of Quds and was involved in the bloody purges that murdered more than 10,000 dissidents after the revolution. That made the Shah look moderate. It was under his watch that Iran started their secret quest for the bomb. If he is a reformer, then Noam Chomsky is a liberal.....

Posted by: maxtrue Author Profile Page | June 6, 2009 4:19 PM

  101. Bob mentions the 6 day war. If today's liberal had their way in pre-empting pre-emption. Israel might not exist. The world did nothing as Egypt and Syria prepared to hostilities. Jordan felt dragged along. Had Israel not decimated the Arab air force in the first day, the results would have been different. And the war they fought was with European weapons. America had not yet entered the picture.

The stock piles growing in Lebanon and Gaza and in bunkers in Iran represent a similar threat. Now the world wants Israel to wait until attacked, but then that wouldn't be the lesson of history, would it? And after the wars, the agressor declares themselves to be victims? Just a thought in light of the 6 Day War and D-Day. Again, this might be interesting to some...

  113. .I hope I didn't make the wire go dead.......

Well since I'm not interrupting anyone, I just wanted to throw this out there for Jamie, or Lardie or anyone else. Being an Independent or a "centrist", doesn't mean one opts for and averaging between Republican and Democratic talking points. They, more frequently than the magnetic poles, flip and reverse or are both plain wrong. Just a decade ago, people like Power advocated intervention to prevent genocide. She criticized Clinton over Rwanda, so does she criticized Obama for not even mentioning to Arabs the millennium’s first genocide of Africans in the Sudan? Is their plight less important than Gazans?Or less a human rights abuse? This fact might not even have been lost of Obama's audience in Cairo.

Instead, Independence is a kind of excluded middle. It is quite possible that both the Democrats and Republicans are wrong and then an average between stupidities is doomed. Nor does a centrist or Independent necessarily hold an average of principles or values. Personally, I am not sure of what would be conservative values. Is conservation or preservation one?

One thing however, often exposes a Centrist. They all generally prioritize national crisis in a general way with security, economy the top issues and social issues beyond questions of personal liberties lower down the list. Again, a centrist could have an altogether different idea to remedy a problem and advocacy is not simply a watering down of two different partisan portions. On rare occasions a Republican AND a Democrat are right and the centrist is wrong. (See what the lack of LOL can do here?)

Last, my link to the possible origins of altruism was a footnote to D-Day.

The lesson is not just where altruism might have started past kin, but also in light of D-Day, the modern fact; that sacrifice for a Free People is largely based on the common love we have for our country and the principles worth defending. There is nothing as determined in sacrifice as Free People fighting to preserve their liberty or the liberty of others.

  117. True, but SCOTUS picks are based on their excellence in following and applying the law. Something like those creatures in DUNE that create space tunnels.

Role models are great and Obama is the prime example. Clinton is another. At the end of the day however, it is how they do their job that is most important. I'm not sure Holder at Justice is going to lower the aarrest rate for Blacks. By that measure Obama should already be having an effect.......

The Republicans keep saying they need to "slow down" the hearings for a "close examination" ... bs bs bs.

They don't mention that the time the President has requested for approval is exactly the same amount of time allowed for the last nine supreme court justices.

I just get so tired of the crap playing to the base.

  120. The Republicans had there trickle-down party. The rich got richer, Wall Street lived it up and conspicuous consumption was considered the norm. CEO salaries started skyrocketing at a rate that far outstretched the economy and dwarfed raises for those at the bottom.

It is time for the Dems to pursue "trickle-up"-enomics.

It is funny that one of the most plain and simple truths that Obama spoke during the campaign were a call to outrage. "Spread the wealth."

Perhaps "balance the wealth" would be more appopriate. But it got all out of wack in recent years when excess was celebrated - and struggling was swept under the rug until that little thing called a recession.

But I don't think we need to government to dictate salaries - nor should they. It can be a matter of common sense. And with the internet - those salaries should be at our fingertips.

Some of those CEO salaries of some $30-50M a year with golden parachutes even higher - are simply beyond the pale.

We don't need to relitigate the past - but we shouldn't let it happen again.

Civilizations are more unstable when there are greater imbalances of wealth.

America as the land of opportunity is one of our enduring traditions.

And it is in all our interests. A lower-class - that has a living wage, education, health care and security - is a lower class that has a lesser drain on society.

It means lower default rates, increased spending, and less crime.

(Now if we could just explain that to these rich old white guys....)

  123. As an Independent, I don't think it unwise to vet a picture for public consumption. Then people will see the type of person Obama wants to be one of the Justices. Democrats would love to drag out some issue until Hell freezes over.

But yes, so much we see is games when there is so much that is dangerous. Since she is going to be a Justice, we should get it on with Repubicans using the normal amount of time to expose her warts.

Gonzales was not given that much applause from Democrats despite his being Hispanic. When Republicans do it, the media will not cheer so much and still seek the knife. Just look at what they did to the last black justice. They found pubic hairs on a soda can.

  132. I just realized the difference between an argument and sophistry. (I mean I have heard sophistry defined often - but it is a difficult concept to grasp.)

But the realization was based on an experience from many years ago. When I was in DC for a spell - I got a job one semester up on the Hill as an intern for a Senator on the Judiciary Comm. I was only there a short while - but I did get to see one a Strom Thurmond's final appearances.

But as I watched the politicians debate - one thing struck me. In the law, you need to marshall the facts, gather the law - and are supposed to be right. Your theory will be tested - an opposing view given - and a judge or jury will decide which is correct (or at least the best you can do.)

But I noticed politicians did not need to be on the "right" side of the debate - she or he only has to simply make the opponent look worse - by any means possible.

(I will admit the law often degenerates into this on a regular basis - but attorneys at least have a strict set of rules to follow, a judge to keep them in line and - oh yeah - the law. Politics is an exercise in unbridled gamesmanship.)

But I will say one thing - it is sure a hell of a lot easier to see which side looks worse than to figure out what is "right"

(One last caveat: the foregoing was brought to you by your resident-trusty-self-serving lawyer ; )

But he needed to do it in terms that would resonate. He had to build trust and show understanding and humility. And he could not do too much lecturing.

He accomplished that. It was a masterstroke.

Let us never forget that, when they were young, these men saved the world.

In Hawaii, I didn't go the the Arizona. In Germany, I didn't go to Dachau or Auschwitz. In Normandy, I'll not go to the cemeteries. I taught with a mild-mannered man who was a paratrooper dropped behind enemy
lines on D Day. The strength and courage of these people, from soldiers to planners and victims, men and women, overwhelms me. The hatred and greed of fascists could never meaure up.

But I'm afraid the Elie Wiesel might be right. The world hasn't learned.

  142. "You seem to not get the purpose of Obama's speech.
It was directed to Muslims. That was the audience."

Then seem not to have read a number of posts on this issue. For the tenth time, I gave Obama good grades for the speech as I limited by scoring based on the objective; "to widen the conversation". As I have also said repeatedly, as a policy speech or even as an historical summary, Obama makes many errors and half-truths. While one can excuse this as massaging an audience, Universities here I hope hold a higher standard of truth and honesty.

If it was a MUslim audience, why not ask Muslims to stop the first genicide of this century? Why not point to a central logical fact that as long as Iran calls shots in Hamas and Hizb'Allah, Palestinians and ISraelis cannot sut down and solve their problems. This was an Egyptian audience that would agree with that. Egypt is practical at war with the Brotherhood and HIzb'Allah.

Since ther was no mention of genicde, I do not see Power, though the comparison between Gaza and Buchenwald is both groteque and strange given Obama's trip. Has his daily briefing shown him pictures of crematories in Gaza or rather miltants using thier children as shields instigating a war because they started firing missiles into Israel. The sanctions upon Hamas were international in nature and concerned an aspect of Obama's contradictory massage by his demand that Arabs recognize Israel's right to exist. Egyptians might, but how are Arbs to force Hamas to back off if Iran has both Hamas and HIzb;Allah in their pocket?

Again, good massage. The devil is in the details and I mentioned to Craig, if we see Hizb'Allah win in Lebanon it is absurd to think a Palestinian State will be nothing more than a close postion to attack Israel. The Taliban have moved into Kashmir, AQ is making contact with HIzb'Allah. To put it prospective: the UN's own report says that Hizb'Allah has rearmed with advanced weapons, created a military data line throughout Lebanon rebuilt bunkers UNDER THEIR MANDATE AND NOSES.

Unless we address the red lines and current behavior beyond the control of the street, words will remain words. A new war will make many forget what was said in Cairo.

    Max,

You know the opposition is desperate when they pull the "numbers never lie" routine. Even if the appellate justices get reversed on the reverse discrimination case coming up, you will hear things like "Sotomayor was reversed on almost one in five cases appealed" which I suppose is true as long as you don't consider the hundreds of cases that were never appealed in the first place.

Numbers may not lie, but liars do.

  166. I couldn't help but notice Obama has been reading my posts...

"Appearing with Sarkozy before reporters, Obama displayed growing impatience with North Korea and what he called its "extraordinarily provocative" nuclear and ballistic missile tests. He suggested that the North is testing international patience as diplomacy has failed to persuade the reclusive communist government to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

"Diplomacy has to involve the other side engaging in a serious way in trying to solve problems," he said. "We are going to take a very hard look at how we move forward on these issues, and I don't think that there should be an assumption that we will simply continue down a path in which North Korea is constantly destabilizing the region and we just react in the same ways."

Obama also took on Iran, suspected by the West of seeking to build its first nuclear bomb, an accusation Tehran denies. The president has said military action remains on the table, but has offered to change U.S. policy and engage in talks with Tehran. He said Saturday, though, it must be "tough diplomacy."

"We can't afford a nuclear arms race in the Middle East," Obama warned. Sarkozy said he worries about "insane statements" by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad." AP

He knows the clock is ticking (he doesn't mention more than an arms race) and he seems to be preparing his base for things to come while taking away the ammo from his conservative critics who think he is far too soft. In the end, I agree with Jamie, Obama will likely find the best cover in the center although that doesn't mean a watered down mixture of two ideologically different policies. There are no major European leaders that can match his appeal, but he is fast reaching crunch time.

And this doesn't mean I am anywhere near rolling over....

And even then, if you remember, crtics blasted Israel for pre-emption with the UN edging to call Israel the agressor. According to Solar's cable news here, Israel was secretly trying to steal resources.

Unlike today, American media backed Israel and pressured Congress to do something besides observe the kill ratios on Soviet equipment.

Democrats rejected negotiating with terrorists sending Chomsky into a frenzy and Israel declared that captured land would be annexed if adversaries did not negotiate peace. Instead they prepared for the next war which caught Israel off guard.

  172. Bob, my Grandfather fought in WW1. After some brutal fighting he was held as a prisoner for almost 18 months and that might have saved his life. By chance the allies released a deadly flu into the last hardened German defense. A large number of troops on both sides died of sickeness, but some POW were spared being far back behind the lines.

I missed your thread but I wil go back and look. As far as D Day my Dad was quickly pulled from Italy and moved into the front. He never killed anyone but had to get classified information through some disputed territory as the lines zig and zagged under the German counter. He told me that the greatest outpouring of joy he has ever witnessed was the liberation of Europe and the triumph of Liberal Democracy. Although usually a Democrat, he did fear the Western world would forget the bottom line and drift towards cultural and political relativism.

But anyway, I'll check that out. I don't think German could have won in any case. Not without a bomb and then things would have gotten ugly. Interesting note though. The lesson learned besides appeasement and bad former treaties was that mass produced second generation weapons that were reliable out fought third generation weapons. The trend however has been towards the cutting edge.

Funny how lessons change over time.

CBob, as I understand it we just barely ended up on the side we did in WWI. Looking back as a historian, what do you think would have happened if we'd picked the other side or not gotten involved at all?

I remember in the early days of the Iraq war a grunt talking about how we were going to teach Iraq about civilization. I guess he'd never heard of Babylon. I never liked history as a student, but when i went to live in the Middle East my opinion changed.

And this, "In embracing select Republicans, the Obama administration — notably Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff — seems to be applying this maxim: Hug them until it hurts.

“This Machiavellian strategy is pure Rahm,” said John Feehery, a Republican strategist and former top House aide. “It is brilliant and it is painful for Republicans.”

At an event in Virginia titled "Rediscovering God in America," Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee aimed to recapture lost political momentum for the Christian right with strong exhortations for members to involve themselves in politics in order to maintain and increase the presence of religion in the public square, the Virginia-Pilot reports.

Both men railed against abortion rights, gay rights and the lack of religious influence in American public life, however Gingrich upped the ante in his attempt to stir up the crowd with this line:

I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history. We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism.

    wiki:

Silvertone was the brand name used by Sears for their line of musical instruments and sound equipment from the 1930s to 1972. Replacing the Supertone brand, Silvertone had already been the brand on Sears' radios and phonographs since 1915. Probably best known for their line of well made and inexpensive guitars, the brand became popular with novice musicians. Rudy Sarzo, Chet Atkins, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, James Hetfield, Dave Grohl, Phil Keaggy, Mark Knopfler, Mikee Plastik, and countless others had a Silvertone for their first electric, bass, or acoustic guitar. The Canadian band Chad Allan and The Silvertones, which would go on to become The Guess Who, took its name from this line of instruments. Pete Townshend would employ them in live performance with The Who for the purposes of smashing them. Jack White of The White Stripes has been known to use vintage Silvertone amplifiers. Singer-songwriter Beck Hansen's main guitar is a Silvertone.

The name was placed on guitars from more than a few different manufacturers over the years, including Danelectro, National, Harmony, Kay, and Teisco. The guitars - especially the 1960s models - are prized by collectors today. One of the more well-known models is the Danelectro Silvertone 1448, made in the early to mid 1960s. The guitar's case had a small built-in amplifier, which proved popular with beginners.

Today, Silvertone is a brand name used by a Chinese guitar manufacturer and was endorsed by Paul Stanley of KISS from 2003 to 2006.

  267. I'm attempting to determine if my mob of crows is made up of less-frequently occurring Fish Crows or juveniles of the wide-spread American Crow. We are in the Fish Crow summer breeding grounds and we have the habitat. Among adults, the species are distinguished by sound, but when comparing the juvenile Fish to the adult American, it is a very tough call to make, likely beyond my meager skills.

and here I was looking forward to maybe seeing some sprouting going on next week concerning my blue corn.... sure hope the seeds don't rot in the ground.... it's the only crop we planted this year.... our garden beds need to be rebuilt and there's just too much work cleaning up after that ice storm.... we'll plant again next spring....

I want to go outside now while there's still some sunlight left.... love to sit in the sun and read.... I'm reading "Cleopatra and Antony".... the front cover says "power, love, and politics in the ancient world".... what's not to love about a story like that.... those Ptolemies were quite the fun lovin' family....

    Ivy,
That Fish Crow looks a lot smaller than the Crows I'm used to seeing here.. We have a lot of them (American Crow, I'm sure), but their so big. Also, listening to the call sample they had on the page you linked, I thought the fish crow sounded more pleasant (just a personal preference, I guess.) . Our crows sound so threatening to the other birds.

  270. Renee, You'd never be able to sit outside and read here. If the heat and humidity didn't kill you, the insects would. :) I think it's going to be 92 today.

  271. CT, you're very funny. I can see Penguins on the same sex marriage poster. However, your comment doesn't make sense. I have already posted a lengthy defense of gay couples that have State authorization to have adopted kids having the right to be married. As you can see in the case of penguins, evolution is served.

I could also point out various species that take the opposite gender as a life long mate, but nowhere is it found the natural tendency is for same sex pairing. Evolution wouldn't work, would it?

Below is an interesting link. Below Churchill's thoughts on Islam are comments by a friend of Sarkozy. This issue is different than same sex marriage but has an important link on a political level.

    http://galliawatch.blogspot.com/

I have read several similar comments by other French leaders who agree with the trend and I see that Islamization is running headlong into gay marriage. This is the strange thing about what is going on in Europe. Accommodation of Islam while moving to positions most rejected by Islam.

We here in the US, do not have the same demographic problems. I think that Obama is trying a different tact. He does not seem to advocate the same cultural relativism in Europe. He seems he would rather religions given space, but preserve the secular nature of our society and any attempt to allow America to be come watered down to the lowest common denominator. Islam rejects abortion and gay marriage. Islam does not put country before God or a Constitution. We are Americans before believers. One would think therefore that asserting those things would buffer us against Islamic inroads and encourage assimilation, but the irony is that under such cultural relativism proposed by some on the Left and the separation of church and State, ideas that reject such liberties are offered safe haven. In the following case, lawyers assert this criminals religious zeal is a sign of mental illness and overlook the connection of the Mosque he was found in to other attacks quite possibly the recent shooting of an American soldier. This head in the sand approach overlooks inevitable conflict when we aren't honest.

    http://media.www.thelantern.com/media/storage/paper333/news/2009/06/04/Campus/Wrong.Place.Wrong.Time.For.Osu.Stabbing.Victim-3746031.shtml

One would think that pro abortion, gay advocates and anti-religionists would see the inevitable problems with giving all classes of people what they consider their "rights". They more than others should see the terrible oppression of women and children. If we don't draw some line, then it is only time that stands in the way of our Founding Principles being caught in a struggle with demographics deciding what is right and wrong, good and bad.

As you know, I enjoy your posts and think you are a very nice person, as well as extremely intelligent. I do, however, wish you'd let this one go and talk about something else, since it obviously offends so many people. Beside, none of that stuff matters. It all comes down to one very simple principle. We are all equal and therefore, we all deserve equal rights. Everything else is just talk.

  276. Chloe, I did not bring it up, CT did with his comment about Penguins. I tried to link two topics: Islamization and the move by the West to go harder to the Left.

I will give it a rest as I have tried to do since the topic came up last week.

I think however, "we are all equal and therefore, we all deserve equal rights" is exactly the issue that defines the uncertain course of SCOTUS and our collision course with Islam who want their equal rights too.

With that, I will enjoy the day.

    Thanks Chloe for your words....

  279. Tony

Glad to here that you have resolved your dillo problemas. Flatus had the right idea. dillo lobster sounds as good as dillo soup.

I forgot that yesterday was the birthday of my grandnephew Alex. Alex was 1 years old and the youngest of 4. After 3 girls Al my nephew and his wife Veronica had given up on a little boy. He was quite a pleasant surprise to them and to us all.

I am always surprised at how developed children can be. Alex kept staring at me. He seemed very amused that I stared right back at him. I kept asking him why he was eye balling me. Which made him laugh out loud. He also knew that the party was for him. When we sang happy birthday he was do a litte shoulder dance and laughing at us all.

He was a very happy little one year old. This made us all very very happy.

This also reinforces my idea that if you want to make someone happy. Make your self happy first. Not in some selfish way. That is just selfish. But in a way that is sound. Healthy. When you see some you love happy. The joy that you get is the best feeling possible.

Tony. About that race. I don't think that you have been reading the race threads that closely. You might have missed the one's that said that the jockey's shed a much weight possible before the race. So the lighter the weight on the horse. The faster if will go.

We came in fourth. Will never know for sure. But we could have won if you didn't bring those dang Dillos with you. The extra weight could have hurt us in the stretch. Those dillos are soup. If I had my way HA!

And to be fair with you. I did not help that Chloe was talking all of the time. Could not make that gal pay attention to the race. I was to blame just as much. I kept talking about my horse Cheyenne. I think that this distracted our steed. He was listening to the point of distraction.

Hey Im a CUBS fan. There are lot of reasons that I can come up with about why we lost. The next time we ride there will be some rules for the race.

  280. If I was closer Tony, I would invite myself over. Please take no offense with my comments. I am glad to see the military is reconsidering their position on "some issues". Given what America is up against, why exclude those who really have a dog in this fight?

Though I won't elaborate anymore, I think my first link above explains some concerns I have with relativism and why this is an issue of many v the few, although watching star trek recently again, I note Kirk's postion that the one is more important than the many.

In time, maybe he is right........

    Again no offense meant.

    Enjoy the day everyone.........

We knew what you meant, plus we're a forgiving flock.

You're right about the size of the crow species...adult Fish Crows are 15-and-a-half inch birds while American Crows are 17-and-a-half-inch birds. The Fish Crow call is the more "melodic," but probaby not to the American Crows.

  284. Thanks Max, and thanks for not taking offense. You are 'always' so well mannered. Have a great day!

Tony, We have Emma for the day, so we'll have to save the movie for another day. That won't stop us from going to lunch though. She's great to take places and loves the sites. Yesterday, we took her with us to PetSmart, and while her grampa did the shopping, her and I looked at the birds (the cutest were the little finches they had), guinea pigs, mice, etc. Then we moved on the the fish. And, of course, there were many dogs throughout the store. It was as good as a trip to the zoo for one so young -- she loved it.

All kidding aside, I would love to be there for one of those pork chops too Tony. I can only imagine what a wonderful host you are, and that house and pool are to die for.

    Have fun today!

  285. Max, I was just funning ya. No offense. We need people of different points of view here to keep us all thinking. It's by debating that we really even find out how committed we are to our point of view.

I had just stepped out to WW. Been going so much that I was feeling some withdrawal. Got a boat battery last year that went dead but....it wasn't even a year old so I got another one for free. Love it. And I found a card table, I really didn't need but it was on sale for 18 bucks, normally 44 bucks. Very satisfying, almost euphoric. I don't know if I can even stand myself today, I'm so happy.

The gay gene is a continuous part of evolution. If it wasn't it would have died out long before now. Also gays can reproduce. That makes also makes it part of evolution. There are very few species that mate for life. Even those species are know to have a fling or two. That is also part of evolution. Tony said.

I was tickled by Craig's comment that he's "used to being ignored around here" because we rarely stay on his topic. I know he was joking, but one reason I stick around, even when merely lurking, is the fact that Craig takes on the "big topics" like World Peace, while allowing me to enjoy the "fun stuff" like birds, snakes, horses, gardens, poetry, history, and the other stuff of our fabulous culture. It also keeps me out of "managing" other peoples' problems over which I have no control, better helping me to "don't worry, be happy" for which I need all the help I can get. (^_~)

I agree! Solar, Many (MANY!) years ago, I read a book called 'The Art of Selfishness'. And it's about very much the same thing that you're talking about. I don't think being good to yourself is being selfish at all. You have to treat yourself as well as you expect to be able to treat other people. And I think the feeling of 'gratitude' is what gives us that best feeling possible that you mentioned. Appreciation.

I built several large ovens, not as big as this, but still big enough to cook a whole meal in ONE oven. I always tell newbies to BUILD A BIG oven, this way, they won't be disappointed with having to build another one that is larger than the first. In my slantfaced oven, I can cook a meat, casserole, veggies, bread and dessert in ONE oven. i start with the meat first, then add the other pots in the order they will be done by dinner I stack them on top of the other pots using racks.

All of it. But we as adults are taking more time for them. Than our parents took (most of them any way imo) for us.

We also never talk that goofy baby talk to them. The little girls are talked to like a person. They are given choices to make. Little ones and aske why they made them. We talk to them in both Spainis . English also. What I think is that by the younger ones being around the older ones (children) that also aske the why questions. Makes them respond to the question . This makes them more aware of everything. No matter how young. They respon well to all of this.

  307. Solar, so you're quoting me now on the genetics of gayness? I will do as Chloe asked and avoid this conversation now (I do have a sensible rebuttal as I mentioned the evolutionary point first here), but thanks for the nice comment. If I thought you all had little merit and were mean, why would I torture you all? I will say only that I recognize the merit of your postion as well as my own. One observation: artificial wombs will one day radically alter the social equaltion. I would NEVER deny a gay couple the right to be married if one of them contributed to the genetics of their child. That would be rather silly, yes? And it goes against my advocacy for gay parents to be legally married. Complex......and another time, okay?

Bob, it IS facinating that the 6 Day war and the Israeli bombing of Saddam's plant happened at the same time of year. I guess we should be happy nothing has happened recently. If you remember, the NYT was quite pro Israel in their reporting. Lost was the later poor coverage of Reagan's pre-empting (stopping) the Indian/Israeli strike on Pakistan's infant nuclear facilities. Now the Taliban are a two hour drive from them.

  313. Patd, you ARE the right people. Given the moderate witch hunt on the Right, there are not too many conservatives listening to centrist reasoning. You think most agree with the NYT on Obama's speech? Yes, some facts I post seem like conservatives would agree with some of my facts, but the sad truth is that the context they place these facts go deep into the gutter. What Democrats think is far more important to me at the moment...

  319. Grassley is just pissed Obama is pushing a public plan and fast tracking it. This is just political gaming.

Deval poll numbers reflect the problem with Mass healthcare. What started out as a public plan to cover only the uninsured who can't afford it might get bigger and threaten the private system beyond healthy competition. With so many experiments going on, it might be wise to take some time and get bipartisan consensus. GOP feels the snubs and are doing the only thing they can do for some leverage.

So Sarcozy and Agrassley feel snubbed. I still can't get over that Bush joke with a billion Muslims and one dentist. Hving a night out in Paris doesn't seem in the same ballpark and how many vacations did Bush have? Perhaps he should have been reading his daily briefing instead......

  322. It is a matter of time before Islamists here complain their rights are being violated. Seven Million are sure to have a subset bitching that their religious freedom is being marginalized. And that does not include those people who want two wives or a Muslim holiday. Does the left want religious garb in classrooms and not gang clothing? There is a long list of things certain classes say they have a right to. It is a slippery slope one cannot deny. There is a long history of our debating the line between rights and our cultrual values (the rights of majorities).

Of course we all know the people advocating for the rights of the unborn or the brain dead.

Another lesson that we can teach the young. We can teach them to accept it responsibility (when they are wrong). that it is always easy to put the blame on others. Then they can move on. The lesson would be that it does no one any good if we can't accept the facts. But that's ok. There will be other opportunity's. to teach them this later on.

    Max,

There have already been several suits of this type with a variety of results. Some that come immediately to mind: The wearing of hajib both in other uniform places, schools, and driving licenses. The wearing of a turban when other head gear is normally required. Children wearing of the little ceremonial dagger worn by Sikhs. Side curls, yarmulkas ... you name it there are scads of voluntary and mandatory garments worm by members of minority religions.

I trust our courts to come to an accomodation that protects the majority while upholding the rights of the minority.

    Yep Solar, You're right.
Facts are what they are -- They need to know that from the beginning. We mustn't forget that a lot of what they learn is from imitation too. So we need to always keep that in mind as we're interacting with and reacting to them, and others (in front of them). Most of the really important things they learn are the things they see over and over again, day after day.

First, they will rail against the use of "empathy" and argue that she is an "activist judge" who thinks appellate courts are where "policy is made."

In the next breath, they say she got the Ricci case wrong - making an empathetic case for the firefighters, stating that she was wrong without mentioning a bit of law - and say that the court should have stepped in and actively reversed a decision of the local government on the basis of what is "just" - rather than what the law says.

  366. My Visit To Hell
    by
Christopher Buckley.....excerpt of article on Daily Beast.....about a trip he made to auschwitz with his dad ten years ago.

More exhibits. The Nazis kept such meticulous records, which in the end only meant that there was a vast amount to destroy as the Red Army approached in January 1945. Every death—murder—was written down. Jarek points to a photocopy of a ledger that survived. “The reason given was never ‘bullet’ or ‘gas,’ but instead ‘heart attack’ or ‘kidney function’.” Deaths are listed in intervals of minutes.

In the next case are photocopies of transit passes for the trucks that brought the cannisters of Zyklon B pellets. The contents are listed as “material for the displacement of Jews.” Here are the minutes from the Wannsee Conference outside Berlin on January 20, 1942, the meeting of the board of directors of the corporation in charge of the Final Solution. These are free of euphemism. One page shows the goal: a column of numbers, country-by-country tallies, with a bottom line of 11 million.

Up a flight of stairs, around a corner. No more paperwork. Now it gets personal: two tons of human hair behind glass. Mounds on mounds, amorphous and hard to take in at first, until you focus and see the pigtails and braids. Jarek remarks that they were going to send some of this to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, but in the end it was declined as “too much.” The hair was shorn after the gassings, then efficiently dried in the crematoria so it could be industrially spun into carpeting.

Here is a large pile of spectacles, a spidery mass of rusted wire-frames and dusty lenses. These were left with the clothing in the dressing rooms, so the last things seen through these glasses would have been nervous kapos and Death’s-Head guards.

Behind another wall of glass is a jumble of rusted artificial limbs, canes, crutches, braces. Like the hair, it blurs into abstraction until the eye settles on a child’s fake leg. Now it’s into another room and the suitcases, piles and piles of shriveled leather suitcases. They wrote their names on them in large white letters. Jarek points out the word “orphan” in Dutch. Hundreds of names. I write down one: PETR EISLER 1942 KIND. The year of his birth and his child—kinder—status. In the next room comes the display of children’s clothing, pacifiers, rattles, hairbrushes. Then the shoes, a mountain. Finally the empty canisters of Zyklon B, perhaps a hundred or more, in a pile. By to the calculations of Rudolph Hoss, Auschwitz’s first commandant, it required seven kilos of Zyklon to murder—not the word he used—1,500 people, so this pile here might have sufficed for perhaps 75,000 or 100,000 human beings. It appears from the tops that they refined the process of opening the cans. Some are jagged, others have been smoothly cut, as if in one motion by a machine. Across from this display is a clay diorama of a gas chamber in action. Once everyone was inside, between 700 and 1,500, depending on which of the five gas chambers it was, the doors and windows were sealed tight. The bluish pellets of diatomite soaked in hydrocyanic acid were poured through chutes. Exposed to oxygen, the pellets gave off prussic acid, blocking the exchange of oxygen in the blood. Those close to the chutes died instantly, the ones farther away took longer. Hoss watched one gassing through a peephole. In his Reminiscences before he was hanged in 1947, he describes clinically that it took two or more minutes before the screams turned to moans. Still they didn’t open the doors for half an hour, just in case. After that it was safe for the Sonderkommando, the prisoner work crews, to wade into the tangle of bodies, vomit, and excrement to get the hair and the gold teeth and drag the bodies next door to the crematorium. The work paid well and was competed for: one-fifth liter of vodka, five cigarettes, 100 grams of sausage for each job.

  371. Incredible Sturg, isn't it? I guess that's one reason Hitchens defaced the NeoNazi Syrian poster in Lebanon. He knows full well how that turns out. Where he was roughed up and escaped with his life some of the worst sort of this hatred incorporates itself into landscape. In some Lebanese towns it rules as leathered thugs funded by extortion and enablers.

Tonight, the Lebanese voted for Liberty and handed Ahmadinejad a bitter loss. On Thursday Fatah defeated a coup by Hamas in the West Bank. Obama didn't mention that in his speech.

The next few weeks see if Ahmadinejad is desperate enough to green light a military coup in Lebanon. Seems things are pretty tense in Iran. Ahmadinejad invested heavility in Lebanon and has tried to derail the peace process in Gaza. They have sought power in Iraq and shipped tractors and materials to Hugo. Ahmadinejad's opponents are going to paint this loss in Lebanon as his strategic failure after he poured billions into weapons research and isolated his country. Perhaps this History Denier might be defeated.

I would change that likely I told Rez to probable as some in the Iranian Resistance still think many Iranians will forgo voting in protest. It appears the other candidates are about as bad as Ahmadinejad.

Obama's speech was not something that McCain could have delivered or even conceived of but there is a secret. Obama used the opportunity created by the plot by HIzb'Allah, The Brotherhood and Quds to topple the Egyptian government. Egypt has come close to calling it war. It was revealed the Hariri murder is on their hands too. Egyptians were then the best Muslim audience to recognize Muslim genicide to their West and Iranian threats to their East. They had their President murdered over peace with Israel. The timing in this interesting chain of recent events was gift that Obama played perfectly into the Lebanese election and now Iranian elections. He can cement a better military alliance with Lebanon's army and get the Turks on boards with the Egyptians and Jordanians....

Obama avoided a very bad week.

And that's my read for the week to come.

    Never Forget your "Johnson Bar"
We moved the sheet metal brake, and installed it.
Made the first bends in the shell parts.

  373. I saw this a couple of days ago -

Easily Grossed Out? You Might Be A Conservative!

ScienceDaily (June 5, 2009) — Are you someone who squirms when confronted with slime, shudders at stickiness or gets grossed out by gore? Do crawly insects make you cringe or dead bodies make you blanch?

If so, chances are you're more conservative -- politically, and especially in your attitudes toward gays and lesbians -- than your less-squeamish counterparts, according to two Cornell studies.

  374. I can't believe I'm the only one who had that 'trouble'
with the dillos. I knew I was bad, but gee whiz....I was relling the truth, however, the word did keep popping up in my vision.

As for the babies and little kids, I think was pay more attention because we have more time, and that attention plus all the new gadgets we have today for them to play with is just socializing them more. I know Alex played tricks on us at 3 months and at 4 months invented the game of peek-a-.boo - he laughed at us when our jaws dropped because we never taught him that. He's still playing jokes on us much more so than the others. So believe it when your little ones do spectacular things!

  376. Look Bethy, the boys have been dangling that little dillos words in front of us girls for a couple of days now waiting for one of us to get it wrong. Have you ever heard of a dillo? No.

I will have to admit the first time it almost threw me too. But you have to be careful the meat you throw these guys. Understand. You just got caught here.

I went to bed too early and this is what happens, I wake up in the early, early morning.

  377. Headline in the NY Post:

    "INMATE'S 55-HR. ERECTION AGONY"

(and they are blaming a nurse)

Carol! Is that you? (I truly did laugh my butt off at that one.)

  378. And the "dillo" recipes threw me back as well....:)

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 8, 2009 4:04 AM

  379. Yep in all the years I have been dealing with armadillos Bethy no one has ever called them dillos before, at least around here. And who started using this word first? Hmmmm. A little word search and it comes up Solar. The king of the bad boys. You gotta watch him Bethy. I rest my case.

  380. Yep Patsi, a little insomnia. Or went to bed to earlia.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | June 8, 2009 4:19 AM

  381. And Patsi, we knew better than to mention it, huh?

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | June 8, 2009 4:27 AM

  382. Hey Patsi, that little dysfunction is called a priapism.
And 48 hours is way too long. Hell, on TV they say "consult your physician for erections lasting more than 4 hours" when taking Cialis. I think even 4 hours maybe a little long, especially in prison because we prefer they don't really use it there, that is the erection, they definitely don't use Cialis.

  383. "The prehistoric beaver reports (ha like I believed that one) "

Laugh if you must Solar but I was talking to my neighbor about the beavs and he said someone was driving down the road here the other night and almost hit this huge beaver. Never seen one that big. He said it was so big that if he hit it, it would have wrecked his vehicle. I thought, yep, it's the giant beaver after all. Still watching.
