How to Add Your Comments on Trail Mix
Celebrity-in-Chief
Obama's celebrity status is big business for the news media. In this Video Trail Mix, Craig examines how transcending politics to become a cultural icon helps the President manipulate the media. (Produced by CQ's Andrew Satter)

Hoo Woo, I'm pissed at you Craig. Throwing up that topic last night at my bedtime and getting me all cranky. I didn't sleep well and I will be cranky all day now. Whatever happens today that isn't good will be all your fault.

And I am still waiting for the answer to my question last night. Exactly how is it that Ms. Palin is a slut? Is it because she is an attractive female politician? Is it because she has a different political ideology?
And why is it that her kids/family are such fair game? Is that because she is a woman? I need someone to do some splaning to me.
It wasn't so much the message Sturge as it was the timing for Craig. Even though I would have liked a little more indignation on his part last night. Actually I was surprised that Keith O was as critical as he was. He certainly doesn't seem to me to be pro woman, usually more the opposite.

Pogo,
Your thrust in re detainees is different than mine. As a military person I always look at protecting a fighter's status as a POW. Absent compelling evidence, a fighter shall be considered a POW rather than a criminal interloper.
I do agree that an individual contesting characterization as either a POW or a criminal, should be afforded access to the courts via Habeas Corpus.

Did team Letterman mean it in a political sense, because that could be said of most politicians.
The most popular shows now involve the public voting, so, being a media/celeb culture, we voted Obama on to the shows.

CT,
Just dropping in quickly because I have to leave for work, but wanted to echo your comment about younger women in the work place.
A 60ish lady in our office wears the scars and still has a bit of a chip on her shoulder regarding sexism on the job and elsewhere. Two younger women who work closely with her don't notice the slights the older lady sees, and they seem to think the fight is over, or not worth fightng. I agree with you that their day will come, and they'll wish they had given more support to their "radical" co-worker.
Sad but true.
Posted by: EdVB
| June 11, 2009 7:39 AM
Yep Ed, they have been reaping the rewards of all our scars without lifting the first finger. But if they don't keep up the fight they will be starting all over. I'll be sitting in my rocking chair mumbling, "I told you so."
I think it would be fitting to start a campaign for a "Night without Nookie" in honor of Dave Letterman.

Glad you always post your Olbermann appearances, Craig.... I was busy watching the Red Sox beat the Yankees again.... hehehe....
I think Palin's mistake regarding her family was in parading them around in front of the media.... of course she needed to answer questions about her pregnant daughter... but answering questions is not the same as actually parading said daughter and her boyfriend in front of cameras....
I don't watch any of the late night shows.... I'm a morning person...

Morning all, have nearly caught up with all my jobs so hope to be back with you all soon.
Firstly, was greatly saddened by the shooting at the USHM yesterday.. My Dad even more so. He remains frustrated by the location chosen for the Jewish State and doesn't see an end in sight to their troubles
Am wondering why Palin assumed that Letterman was talking about her 14 year old. Could it be because Bristol was in Alaska and the other was at the game? If so, too bad that it wasn't pointed out.
Slutty? That's pretty GD obnoxious on his part. Palin knows how to dress and she does it tastefully and looks comfortable in them. She has a great figure and wears flattering clothes. Nothing slutty there. Think Michelle could use a lesson or two from her but we won't be hearing anything of the sort from the media. Her dress isn't in anyway slutty nor is her behavior, in fact her devotion to her husband is somewhat nauseating.
Secretly thrilled to be on the top 10 list? Come on Craig, I'm sure she was thrilled right up until number 2 and her style of dress was compared to slutty on national television. I'm sure the thrill was gone then. Latitude for comedians is an argument that the media used in defense of tolerance for hateful, sexist, racist etc. statements comedians make during the time Imus was fired. Olbermann was his biggest critic and I'm pretty sure he used that justification himself back then and would have if he didn't get the chance

here's an interesting article in this week's Nation by Katha Pollitt on older feminist vs younger feminists....
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090615/pollitt
IMO..... taking the tone of "you youngsters don't know what we went through and don't appreciate what you have because of us".... will only turn younger feminists off.... although I do understand the sentiments and have felt that way myself....
younger people must find their own way.....
and I think if we oldsters reach out our hands in respect... we'll get respect in return.... and maybe some understanding....

mornin'
Flatus, I understand your position on detainees, and I agree with yhour position as opposed to the position taken by Bushco and to an extent adopted by SCOTUS. POW makes sense for those that are actual battlefield captures or for those who are legitimately and demonstrably operationally connected to our enemies in theatres of operation. It does not make sense for folks picked up by bounty hunters and who are denominated enemy combatants and held without charges. That is what the intent of the 3 major SCOTUS decisions appears to me to be - to provide prisoners an opportunity to challenge the status under which they are being held, and to keep the government somewhat honest in its denomination of and detention of those prisoners. It is also btw what the Bill of Rights seeks to do - limit the government's power over us. But more than that, what the decisions do is make clear that even in time of war, the executive branch may not do away with checks and balances, which forms the basic structure and operation of our government. I approve of it.
Craig, I'm not sure what changes have been made by the CQ techies, but I can now view your vids - great vid, btw, and I kinda like the Tinkerbell chime.
carol, I agree that calling Palin's look slutty was over the top - bad word choice at a minimum, but politicians' looks aare joked about - Biden was joked about for his hair plugs, Boner for his tan, Nancy Pelosi for her facework, Hillary for her hips. The criticisms of womens' looks do tend to be more gender related than those of men - I'll grant you that. And really, while she is not my cup of tea, Palin is attractive and she has pretty kids. I took the joke about Sptizer more as a joke about Spitzer than about Bristol, but I may have missed the point. Bristol shouldn't be the source of any attack just because she did what teenagers do and got pregnant as a result, but IMHO she is fair game as an example of the hypocrisy and uselessness of her mother's positions on abstinence only education. What we have to remember is that Letterman is a comedian, not a political pundit. His job is to make people laugh and buy soap. If he isn't funny, he'll change his jokes.

[repost]
So i am getting my nightly fill of Fox and I think it is high time the left starts hitting back on healthcare.
Thanks to the man-child Franky Boy Luntz - all i hear from the right are the catchphrases of government rationing and sowing the seeds that Obama's plan will result in less healthcare as opposed to more.
(And it is all negative and tied into the overspending meme - which is effective - and there are no legitimate alternatives being proposed that the GOP could live with.)
Now I watched both sides debate in the run up to the election. And there was consensus that we needed healthcare reform. And that came from the electorate and the politicians could not ignore it.
There was also consensus - on both sides - that we need to:
1. Bring down costs
2. Increase access
So the debate should focus on ideas to acheive these ends - not all of the reasons why nothing should be done.
Also - we shouldn't think of all our problems in isolation.
Unemployment is on the rise. So lets encourage kids to join the healthcare industry with scholarships, etc. Can't ship those jobs overseas!
We should also eliminate the stigma that guys should not be nurses.
We should also increase the numbers of RNs and Physician assistants. They play a vital role in preventative care. They can also do much of the same work that doctors can do - but at much lower hourly rates. (They also don't keep u waiting as long ; )
Anyways, peeps - we can't lose control of this debate (again).

ct:
I think the only reason for Dave's "slutty" comment is that Palin is attractive.
Even though it is baseless, when a man is attacking an attractive woman, calling her a "slut" is one of the go-to moves.
I am speaking on behalf of my sex - not myself.
(And I have been trying to tread lightly on this subject - but I knew I would somehow get in trouble ; )

I just heard the anti public option commercial ... doom, gloom, scary music and did you know rather than covering the uninsured it will mean more than a million will lose their health care and be stuck with an inefficient and unworkable Government Plan ... lions, and tigers and bears OH MY!!!
You wonder why all of the other countries in the developed world have continued to exist at all.
Posted by: Jamie
| June 11, 2009 11:41 AM
Warren,
There are some good components in that op ed. One thing most proposals keep missing is that a public option that allowed younger people to buy into Medicare could actually save Medicare since it would be extended to the younger and healther instead of just the most elderly and sickest.
Tacoma has a wonderful system for low income and seniors that would probably work for the whole of the public. It is a system that joins together all of the medical services in the region coordinated through one health care insurance plan that gets its funds from Medicare, Medicaid, and low income sliding scale for services. Four clinics in different parts of the city for well care and normal family services (keeps people out of the emergency rooms unless it is actually an emergency). Four Hospitals one of which is a teaching Hospital associated with the University. One Testing location for everything such as MRIs etc.
Most of the day to day care is provided by RNs and PAs but an MD or specialist is always available if needed. There is no reason it couldn't be duplicated in almost every city in the country.
Reduced cost and good care.

| June 11, 2009 11:52 AM
Jamie:
I agree the op-ed makes some good points. One of the most striking things from the piece was the following excerpts:
"Reform starts with paying for quality, not quantity. According to a study at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, as much as $750 billion is spent each year on procedures or health-related services that don’t necessarily help patients get better."
...
"And physicians are paid more when they order more tests, procedures and office visits, whether you need them or not."
Is this rationing?! The govt coming in between a patient and doctors?! (I can hear Luntz screaming the "sky is falling" in the background.)
What makes me so mad - is that we all know there is waste in healthcare - and the GOP's catchphrases attempt to mask this and prevent any reform - reform that is crucial.
Let's be clear: I think if someone wants to pursue overly-precautious procedures - or spend money on treatments with little or no chance of success - that is their right.
But that does NOT mean that this strategy should be the norm rather than the exception. And such procedures should be the result of an informed choice by the patient.
We should work to make healthcare more efficient. And strive to have doctors order tests on the basis of: "I think this is in my patient's interest." - as opposed to: "WTF - insurance will pay for this and I want to cover my ass - so lets run all these tests...."

2. A bit of contrition:
"Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes.
"Did I suggest that it was OK for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No."
3. A cheap shot by Palin's spokeswoman:
"The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show," said Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton. "Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."

Thom Hartmann was funny today. He had on a Conservative who felt that too many were associating the far wacko right with honest Conservatives. During the course of the conversation, Hartmann agreed that the left has had its murderous wackos as well with groups such as SLA, weathermen and ELF but he contended that "our wackos are better than your wackos". Your wackos are cheered on by the likes of O'reilly and Rush and everything they do arises from hatred and fear. The left wing murderous wackos aren't cheered on by the left and are usually off the deep end of trying to improve the world (end war, go green blah blah)
It was rather entertaining - My crazies are better than your crazies.

Craig,
Sorry I've waited so long to comment on your clip, because I really like it. You've been right on target.
I think a big piece of Obama's celebrity has always involved his campaigns manipulation of the press. Obviously, they haven't lost their touch. But maybe that's the way it should be. A good public relations department. We can take pride in that all over the world now.

I was able to sneek a few lurks today and keep up with you guys.
Warren you aren't completely out of the doghouse yet for your comment last night on the Palin vs Letterman post of : "Woohoo - go Dave!"
Sea gets the bravery award for her comment, "Secretly thrilled to be on the top 10 list? Come on Craig, I'm sure she was thrilled right up until number 2 and her style of dress was compared to slutty on national television. I'm sure the thrill was gone then."
I felt the same way Sea but didn't want to be any more pushy on the subject than I already was.
I kind of felt like I was channeling Patsi some last night and today. I hope she agrees. Wouldn't want to offend my Patsi.
I am disappointed that we seem to have become so used to this kind of stuff that there is not much outrage anymore. I thought I would have a big team on my side and even my female dog ran under the bed.

Carol, I'm sorry you've felt so all alone in this fight.
It's just that aside from becoming desensitized to the things these jokesters say, there just doesn't seem to be a lot we can do about it. Except teach little girls not to listen to it. I'm not saying there's 'nothing' else we can do, but not much has worked so far. It's hard to figure out what will, after the way Hillary and Sarah were treated this last election. It'll just take time.
I felt like you were channeling Patsi too. And a good job you did. I'm sure she would be proud.

"conservatives" get to be associated with violent and murderous right-wing racists, religious bigots, woman-haters, xenophobes, and gay bashers, because "conservative" spokespeople cheer the haters on, and explain away the bad behavior as being the fault of the victims.
In the last 30 years, I have not heard any Dems refer to 'niggers', 'sand-niggers,' 'ragheads', 'chinks', 'gooks,' 'sheenies', 'kikes', 'wops', 'guineas', 'feminazis,' 'c#nts', 'queers', or 'c*cks#ckers', when refering to people. I have heard that sort of language with some frequency from fellows who identify themselves as "conservatives", and who claim to support republican candidates. I made mention last year about a group of aging North Philly devotees of McDonald's coffee, who meet every morning to swap lies and demean other, allegedly lesser, people. When I returned to St Paul, I found a similar crew talking the same talk in the mornings at the McDonald's on Rice Street. I have also heard some aging republican fellow members of one of my clubs, refer to 'queers,' 'c#nts', 'feminazis', 'beaners', 'spics', 'chinks', 'Japs', 'wops', 'niggers', and 'kikes.'
Oddly, one of these arschlochs I sonmetimes 'pal' with is a bigshot in the Catholic Defense League. His specialty is demeaning women, gays, 'liberals', and 'secular humanists', which he calls, 'broads', queers', 'libberz', and 'anti-Catholic secular humanists'.
There is no sense in republican flacks trying to make the rest think that "conservatives" don't think and talk like this, because we all know that lots of them do, and that the rest of the 'conservatives' think it's a hoot. How often do you hear "conservatives" ream out "conservative" hate-mongers like limbaugh, savage, or coulter.
Regarding serial husband Dave Letterman, even if it was a swipe at the sluttish cultures of the Palin, Johnston, and A-Rod tribes, it was remarkably inept, and hurtful to the young Palins. However, I hear fairly frequently similar 'witticisms' from right-wingers about the sluttish mores of 'libberz' and 'hoes'. I say that if you can't stand the heat (meaning that kind of talk about 'your people') maybe you'd better get out of the party that alwayscharacterizes other people in mean language.

Considering I went to see Hangover last night I must agree with Chloe's point about being desensitized.. I think Letterman can be an ass but he does it so often at some point -- commenting seems pointless.
He was horrible to Senator Clinton during the campaign.
For awhile people here did make fuss over the sexist and stupid remarks made about Palin and it would be the right thing to continue to do so but I think I would rather ignore it and hope it all goes away.

Thanks patd. I always think of Florida as kind of a floating sponge. One day it's just going to pop the cork and sink.
A friend says that the US has ruined Costa Rica. American companies are pulling out now and leaving the locals high and dry. He's thinking of the Dominican Republic but I don't know anything about it. Costa Rica has great national health care and as I don't have children I could find help easily so I'm thinking of retirement there.
Isn't 'slut' now a term for anyone without resolve that gives in easily? I like the urban dictionary definition. 'A woman with the morals of a man'.

Do you think it is fair that Imus had to pay such a price for his comment and Letterman gets a pass? I don't see much difference in the two comments. The victims of the comments were different but Letterman attacked both Palin and her daughter.
And, again I am not a fan of Palin's ideology. But personal inappropriate attacks should be limited to ideology. Letterman was doing an Ann Coulter. She makes lots of money being an A-hole. And the sad thing is that it probably boosted Letterman's ratings.
I would still like to see a national campaign for a Night Without Nookie in honor of Letterman.

XRepub,
I understand (and often agree with) what the left 'hates' about that certain faction of the the right. Even keeping in mind that all prejudice and bitogtry grows out of ignorance. Ignorance itself is the enemy.
So why can't we talk about that particular group in a way that doesn't refer to them as being the whole of the Republican party? When we say 'all' conservatives, 'all' Republicans, we're chasing away from this blog some interesting people (Republican or not). We're insulting Ping Pong, as well as others, by accusing them of being something they may not be. Can't we just be more specific than 'the entire Republican party', or the repugs, as so many like to put it? How about just calling those people red necks? Or whatever other demeaning term we can think of and all agree on.
Are the women that are pissed at comedians and pundits that always demean women, supposed to hate all men? Or just the ones that are offensive.

When my urologist told me to drink a glass of wine daily, I should have had him write a prescription for it. That would be Old Vines Zinfandel, or at the very minimum, Covey Run Shiraz. Even if my insurer denied the claim, at least I'd get a tax deduction. Silly me.

If you had a medical savings account, you might be able to sneak by a case of the good stuff. You would probably need a note from the doctor to submit to the IRS if there was a query during an audit, but it is for use on "over the counter' medical needs. If it can cover One A Day Vitamins why not Shiraz?

Carol
My initial reaction was based on loyalty. And I use the term loosely here. But it was simply a matter that I have been a fan of Letterman for years - and I am not a fan's of Palin's politics (both in terms of substance and style).
So I came out in favor of Dave. I WAS shocked to hear a couple of jokes. He was way out of line - and those were obviously sexist comments that a man would never have to deal with. Jokes about Romney's hair don't even begin to come close.
On another level, I rarely get outraged over jokes - that do not incite violence. I am a fan of racy often vulgar stuff that pushes the limit. But I am not blind to what is tasteful and what is not. And that doesn't mean I can't be - dare I say - empathetic to the outrage people feel in a lot of cases. (For example, as a white guy - I did not feel the outrage over Imus - but could understand it.)
I believe such comments from entertainers get sorted out in the court of public opinion - and voted on by sales, ratings, etc.

Could idea xrep. I've had two doctors now tell me to drink at least a glass of wine five nights a week.
I'd like to see a few more reforms. Like doctors forced to post their rates in a public place. More say in tests, cost of tests, and need of tests. More information on prescriptions and alternatives. I know a doctor that put my mother on a $20 a month niacin prescription for pete's sake.
Also, flat rate between insured rates and self payer. I've been self insured for seven years now. The whole insurance game is just nuts.

Not from me. If I was her father. Letterman would have a busted jaw.! Just like any other goof that said that about my daughter. Patsi is going to be pissed.
All women should be. But they won't. If R. L. said some stupid junk about the Obama girls-doesn't have to be about sex. The whole world would be at a stand still. Palin is going to get some traction out of this. Night.
I still feel the same way. but I will say this. They all deserve what Letterman ( I don't like what he said) or Leno or any of the late night clowns say. I thought about it. They go on his show-thereby giving him the power to do so. Too late now.
There is one thing that I would do to get even. I would find out about their private lives. Then hire some comedian to talk about them. That is Letterman. Leno or others. Don't get mad. Get even.
Pres. Clinton is-has been the butt of J. Leno for years. Pres. Clinton just ignores him. Hillary did go on his show. At that time I said that she should not have. Too bad they all feel like they should. It is their faults!

A number of states have discussed soda taxes.
The article argued for taxing Coke, Pepsi, Gatorade, Red Bull and any other sugar-sweetened beverage, largely to combat obesity.
The authors were Kelly Brownell, a longtime obesity researcher at Yale, and Thomas Frieden, the New York City health commissioner. Since the article appeared, President Obama appointed Dr. Frieden to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I was worried when you said you were gonna talk about the Letterman/Palin thing, Craig. My take is that if you tell a joke and you have to explain what you meant when you told the joke originally, it probably wasn't worth telling in the first place. I know that a lot of people blew it off as Palin not having a sense of humor. That said, if I was Letterman, I would not have told the joke/jokes in the first place. To clarify by saying, "I was talking about your 18 year-old daughter, not your 14 year-old daughter." sounded pretty bad. I don't know too many parents who wouldn't have gotten mad over that . His apology came off as half-assed to me. I like Dave, but I don't really have any problem with people being upset with him right now. Don Rickles is about the only comedian who really can get away with that type of humor.

I don't like this talk of tax people's work-related insurance plans.
Any tax structure - would simply give companies an incentive to create plans under that excemption. Driving down people's benefits. And hurting business.
Let's keep that tax talk where it was in the campaign.
Roll back the Bush tax cuts - that helped cause the huge deficits run up by Bush after Clinton left him a surplus. Tax cuts that given to people who weren't even asking for them!!
(Which is the party of big government again??)
If we need more money - focus on people making millions - not workers, businesses that employ them, and families. I saw an article about how Simon Cowell spends his $187M - much of it made here - and it is ridiculous!!
Like I have said - take 1-2% of Simon's money - and he will still have plenty of money for his botox, $1,500 shoes, $300K-1.4M cars, vacations, etc.

All the talk about Palin's daughter. Have any of you received the email about Rambo Granny of Melbourne, Australia?
It is being circulated among the usual suspects with a headline: Deport Her to the US We Need Her.
Of course, they don't bother to run it by Snopes

Solar,
Like they stopped Imus? Craig, don't you make regular appearances on Imus?
I'm being snide, I think Imus is one of the best interviewers in the business. The way in tore Lieberman into little pieces will always be a favorite for me.
You're not going to stop these guys as long as they have an audience reach, and with Conan coming in Letterman is gaining even more market share.
I'm pretty surprised Letterman said this though. He's really mellowed compare to what he was like 20 years ago. But near the end of the Bush presidency he started getting a lot more politically active. And of course all of us talking about him, good or bad, is good publicity for him.

AIPAC Wall Beginning to Crack
by: Ira Chernus,
Two-thirds of American Jews say they want the US to play an active role in moving Israel toward peace, even if it means the US publicly disagreeing with, and exerting pressure, on the Israelis. That's according to a poll conducted last summer by J Street, the pro-Israel, pro-peace lobby now widely seen as the counterweight to AIPAC. Contributions to J Street are growing at a rate faster than AIPAC's. In last year's election, of 41 candidates endorsed by J Street for their pro-peace positions, 31 were winners.
http://www.truthout.org/060909R
Now, for the first time, there are signs of a crack in AIPAC's vaunted political edifice. The wedge issue is the Obama administration's public demand that Israel stop all new construction in its West Bank settlements, including what the Israelis call expansion to accommodate "natural growth."
Though Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heads the right-wing Likud party, settlement expansion is hardly a partisan matter in Israel. It has continued at a more or less unbroken pace for years, regardless of which party headed the government. And Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, leader of the opposition Labor Party, is equally staunch in demanding the right of "natural growth."
What's new is the serious objection being voiced in the US government, not merely by the president and his administration, but by members of Congress, including John Kerry, who heads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and several prominent Jewish lawmakers, such as Carl Levin, chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee; Howard Berman, chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee; and influential representatives Henry Waxman and Robert Wexler.
When they met recently with Netanyahu, they made him "very, very aware of the concerns of the administration and Congress," according to one Congressional aide. They pressed Netanyahu on the need to stop building in settlements and rejected his call for Palestinian reciprocity on terrorism as a precondition.
(Another sign of the change: A Congressional delegation visiting Israel actually discussed, in private, the possibility of prohibiting Israel from using American weapons in the West Bank.)
Don-
I see I man a lot different then I see Leno-Letterman. These two nuts are on when most of the uninformed watch them for entertainment. Unfortunetly they also get what they think is new from them. They vote according to what the hear on these shows.

Hi Carol
Never give up fighting for the rights of women!! I just got caught up and I'm sorry you felt alone in your outrage at what Letterman said.Letterman is Shameful and I quit watching him along with Bill Maher back during the Democratic primaries.I was so pissed at there sexist treatment of Hillary.I don't agree with Sarah Palin on anything or really even have a feeling for her but its wrong to speak of her and her daughter in such a way because there woman or girls..I wish there was a way to right these wrongs...

I'm really sorry that those two who emailed Craig got the wrong impression of him. One of the things that attracted me to him and led me to this blog is the way he stood up against the nasty things people tried to do to Hillary. He is the fairest of all the pundits.
I just bet that Bill-O is behind it. They are always spying on Keith's show waiting for an opportunity to get someone. One night Bill was saying that there were no liberal feminists out there who took up for Palin when she was unfairly attacked. I thought they just haven't tuned into Trailmix.

Well. Im going to calm down a little. I have been saying for months now that-if the gas prices keep rising. The recovery would get hurt.
Where is the Stimulus $. When is it going to help the working class.
Today I had to go to meeting at the Indiana-Ohio state line. I saw a lot of tractors on the road for sale. I asked someone about it. They told me that there was 15000 tracktors that were repoed.
They could not afford the diesel fuel along with the trk payments. Very bad signs to me when the truckers are not moving freight. The ones that have gov. contracts like Jax will make $ but not the ones that don't. I wish that he would acknowledge this once in a while when he talks against the government.
If Obama is going to see a recovery any time soon. He needs to put all of the future $ into small biz-small contractors that hire people that spend the $ as soon as they get it.
If it gets worse. He better quadruple the police force-gonna need them imo. I hope that he is finished taking care of his special int people so we can get some help. We are dying out here!!!

First time that I will be going to bed pissed off.
"Why is this no surprise? So-called "free trade agreements" are nothing more than government-to-government licenses to steal resources from less powerful peoples for fun and profit of the multinational corporations. If a few hundred or thousand indigenous people are slaughtered, so what? Profits above all!! These less-powerful governments' actions are backed, all too often, by thugs fronting for the existing oligarchy, andUS military-trained (at the notorious School of the Americas). Regrettably, few, if any, in the Obama administration are paying any attention to this issue, and even fewer acting in any way to mitigate/constructively address it."
US-Peru FTA Sparks Indigenous Massacre
A worker in Yurimaguas, Peru, loads a ship with bags of rice on Tuesday, during a temporary break in indigenous protesters' blockade of the region. (Photo: Enrique Castro-Mendivil / Reuters)
During the last week, deep in the Peruvian Amazon, confrontations between nonviolent indigenous protesters and police have left up to 100 people dead. The vast majority of the casualties are civilians, who have been conducting peaceful demonstrations in defense of the Amazon rain forest.
For almost two months, as many as 30,000 indigenous people have been blocking road and river traffic, demanding the repeal of presidential decrees issued last year to facilitate implementation of the US-Peru FTA. According to the indigenous leaders, several of these decrees directly threaten indigenous territories and rights. After having attempted several times to negotiate with the government the repeal of the most egregious of the decrees, and faced with a permanent influx of extraction equipment into the region, the people decided it was imperative to "put their bodies in front of the machines" in order to prevent this equipment from entering their territory.
On Friday, June 5, the government decided the protests needed to end and launched an aggressive assault against the people protesting on the road outside of Bagua. The dislocation was conducted from helicopters and the ground, with police and army using automatic weapons and heavy equipment against people armed with only rocks and spears. As videos, photos and testimonies from the region slowly emerge, it is clear that this was designed to inflict as many civilian casualties as possible, and deter those in other regions from continuing protests. Pictures circulating on the Internet depict snipers in uniform firing at protesters from the streets, tanks and from on top of buildings. On Saturday, in Lima, Peru's capital, a large spontaneous demonstration in support of the Amazonian indigenous was broken up by police. Read the whole article. No wonder we make so many enemy's around the world!

"There is a wide disparity in the estimates of the number of millionaires residing currently in the United States.
A quarterly report prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit on behalf of Barclays Wealth in 2007 estimated that there were 16,600,000 dollar millionaires in the USA.
...
A report by Capgemini for Merrill Lynch on the other hand stated that there are approximately 3,028,000 households in the United States who hold at least US$1 million in financial assets, excluding collectibles, consumables, consumer durables and primary residences."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millionaire
Either way it is a nice chunk of change.

Warren,
I compared notes with several British friends. The people of the US pay the same or even possibly more by the time you add up all the types of taxes and fees, but more of the UK budget is directed towards the common benefit .
The size of the country helps as does having much more centralized bureaucracy as opposed to 50 states, (i.e. its cheaper to get mail from London to Edinburgh than it is to get it from Miami to Anchorage or a national police organization) but there are so many services Brits just take for granted that we don't have.

I'd like to see a flat tax with necessities exempted or a consumption tax above and beyond living expenses. We have to change from a consumption based economy to a saving economy, for money and to save resources.
Right now there aren't enough incentives to change and the recession hasn't been bad enough to change the US culture as a whole.
