What Does Bush Think?

| | Comments (236)

The weird irony of Dick Cheney's personal jihad is how it raises the stakes for what his old boss as to say. I didn't expect to be interested in hearing from George W. Bush for a very long time, maybe not until his as-yet-unborn grandkids run for office.

But now I'd like to know what Bush thinks of his vice president's high-profile crusade against President Barack Obama's anti-terror policies.

Unfortunately, in his two public speeches since leaving office -- the latest yesterday in New bush-barney-truck399-thumb.jpgMexico -- Bush shared no thoughts about his successor. (Instead, on Thursday he talked about having to dispose of his dog's feces during a neighborhood walk.)

He probably agrees with the substance of Cheney's attacks, but does he think this spat is helping or hurting his own legacy? In fanning the flames of a torture debate, Cheney has spotlighted Bush White House decisions that many Americans find disturbing, at a minimum.

Give Bush some credit for keeping his mouth shut, honoring a presidential tradition for the newly-departed. Maybe we'll get some answers when the ex-president goes on his book tour. After all, Cheney's little war of words could be growing the market for a Bush book.

  2. The Paradigm of time evolves and changes.

It is always easy to arm chair QB after the game and with the environment has changed. I am sure that the he hopes that Obama shares what was the first and primary concern for President Bush which was to keep and maintain the safety of our country. Also to give Obama time to grow and mature. Obama has received the luxury of a new paradigm that Pres Bush did not receive.

Also that the measure of humanity that we of the USA have maintained vs that of the Islamic Terrorist really has not changed. But heck it is a good distraction provided by some.

    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/05/nyt_reporter_maybe_1_in_7_detainees_didnt_return_to_terrorism.php

let's apply this logic justifying holding the other 6 indefinitely and see where it takes us.

War on crime... OK to hold 6 innoncent people suspected of having involvment with crime because if all 7 are released one will become a criminal.

War on drugs... OK to hold indefinitely 6 innoncent people suspected of having involvment with drugs because if all 7 are released one will be involved with drugs after release.

War on poverty .. (the conservatives are gonna love this one) OK to provide support to 6 people who might be poor indefinitely because a seventh will return to poverty if support for all is discontinued.

  13. At some point we have to decide that it's not productive being in anger mode all the time.

Maybe we should attack the faults in the system that enabled the hijacking of our government. And correct those faults.

Then, because the 'system' is fixed, we can let the legal system sort out what to do with the people that may be subject to indictment.

  14. On the logic of keeping detainees off US Soil, have any of the hard liners taken a look at the OTM (other than Mexican) numbers coming across that little 3000 mile border. Thos are only the ones caught. Sure most are simply fleeing impossible government or economic conditions and just want a job, but heck they MIGHT be terrorists.

This country can't be in a constant state of fear over what might happen. Good police work will handle the majority of the problems as has been proven over and over again all over Europe. Sure some bad things will happen. Some people will be injured or die. You can't stop every single crazy in the world from attacking you.

Take precautions, be as prepared as you can, then go about your life. Cowardice is for wimps - send Cheney back to the hills so he will feel safe and leave the rest of us alone.

  15. flatus, I'd like to think that's what Obama is trying to do, but it's kinda hard to do that in any reasonable manner when lunatics like Cheney are given a stage to justify the faults as, shat was it he said - "legal, necessary and the right thing to do"? and some folks seem to forget he's nothing more than a private citizen now with nothing more than an opinion - aside from the fact that he helped engineer many of the faults in the system that Obama is trying to deal with of course.

I keep looking at sites like Huffpo & RCP and clicking links and ending up reading bits and pieces of Cheney's speech from yesterday. Good, lord, it's hard to know where to start.

    Pogo,

I have to admit a little impatience with the "what if" folks. The whole problem with life is that "stuff" happens and to top that off, you don't get out of it alive.

I don't know of anyone who from the day of their birth to the day of their death didn't have a single rotten thing happen to them. You deal with the event when it happens. Wasting your life worrying about it only makes the eventual and inevitable that much worse.

    What's so bad about empathy?
"I'VE NEVER BEEN sure why Lady Justice wore a blindfold as part of her permanent wardrobe. Yes, it's supposed to be a symbol of impartiality. But it does limit her vision a bit.

So it is that I am watching the run-up to the nomination of a new Supreme Court justice with eyes wide open. We've already had preemptive strikes against three women on the media short list. Elena Kagan, Diane Wood, and Sonia Sotomayor are getting the scary radical treatment without even getting picked.

....remember that empathy is not sympathy. It doesn't require that we take sides.

The truth is that we want judges who "get it." The myth of justice as a matter of pure objective reasoning that could be meted out by a computer is just that, a myth." http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2009/05/22/whats_so_bad_about_empathy/

  73. Chloe, I'd give up everything else before I'd give up the Internet. I have one of those thingies you plug into the side of the laptop. I can take this baby out in the boat if need be.

  90. warren, being the lawyer you are, you know that it doesn't take a lot to change that stuff that is and rejected as heinous (Love that word, especially the way it was pronounced by the prosecutor in My Cousin Vinny - High-Anus) to accepted asa reasonable. IMHO, that is what's happening - throw in a little oversight and due process, speak about things as if you actually believe what you're saying, articulate a goal that people believe you have, and voila, the people will buy it. I think that the oversight and due process add ons make all the difference if they occur, but that's just me.

And now (drumroll here) I am leaving to go get the holiday weekend started by cutting the grass then I'm following Renee's lead and getting a bit buzzed on wine. Everyone have a great weekend, and remember those who fought and died.

Thanks Carol, that exactly what I was going for. They say those roles we play are established pretty young in life, partly because of where we fall in line with our families.

You, Carol, are the most interesting person. I think it's because you are so honest, and the way you look at things straight on. Kinda like Craig... I always call him the 'tell it like it is guy'. Good or bad, you're gonna get the truth.

Carol, Maybe it's because of all the BS you must hear on your job on a fairly regular basis. You must have to work hard to get to the truth. (?)

Yeah, but that takes a lot of practice. Plus a willingness to call them on it. That can be a gamble, right?

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | May 22, 2009 5:03 PM

  116. Thanks Chloe, I do have a hard time lying cuz it is beaming on my forehead in neon when I try. I remember the time I had to get a half of a little bottle of cheap tequilla though the Mexican border back into the US. My dumb friends made me and I was driving. I was fighting with those two drunks up until the guy came up to the window.

I had sweat pouring down my face when I told that guy I had nothing to declare. He kept asking, "are you sure?" I thought I was a goner but he ended up letting me back in. I still feel quilty.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 22, 2009 5:06 PM

  117. "I still feel quilty. "

    LMAO!
Now, there's a big difference in us. I think a 'little' lie can be a 'lot' of fun, and I can convince myself that I'm telling the truth ahead of time, so it comes off kinda naturally (sometimes) :)

If you're ever in a situation, where you absolutely have to tell a little fib (to make things right all around), just convince yourself you're in the right ahead of time and that you have nothing to be ashamed of. If you're not wrong in your own head, then you're not wrong period. After all, you can tell the difference in right and wrong.

Chloe,,,Carol,,,,We all have many diff roles to play,,,things change all of the t ime,,,we all are a little diff when in front of our sons and daughters,,,our bosses,,our workers,,,and we all tell little white lies every day,,,,but what is never allowable is to be a liar,,,an out and out one ,,,,and a hypocrite,,,that's the one thing that I won't tolerate,,,some of the high and mighty forget these simple rules that should set them apart,,,but they don't,,,and that is what is sad to me,,,all of the greedy hypocritical liars,,,on both party's,,that's the last two party comment for a while from me.

Well put, Solar. Glad you said it

  130. I camped rough in my youth. Slept out in my clothes, lying on a rag to keep warm, and another rag to keep the bugs and mosquitoes off. Tents were reserved for rainy weather.

The last time I camped out was in an event designed to us show normies what it is like to live homeless in MN during the winter. We wrapped refridgerator boxes with plastic bags & duct tape, and then crawled inside. It snowed that night and the next morning. A little below zero Fahrenheit. I was in my fifties by them and sleeping on the ground wasn't so much fun anymore. Only the Lord knows how the boys got through those horrid weeks during the Battle of the Bulge, and just afterwards during our hot pursuit. No wonder Napoleon left with a half million men when he invaded russia, but only led 20,000 back again.

No more Mr. Tough Guy for this feeble old geezer, that's the truth.

believe it or not, never lied to the gals,I was,,always a happy type of guy,,and a loner,,dated a lot,,but never had the need to lie to get a date,,yes or no was good enough for me,,,,the bs,,was for the desperate???but my little bit of wind is from the Golf Course,,,I used to golf three four times a week ,,when I was in advertising with my clients, and got pretty good,,sometimes as low as 85,,or 87,,,,but I know that it should have been,,,,88,,,or 92,,,and the bs it expected,,,but what I did not like,,is that I did let one of my clients beat me,,,,and that is against anything that I believed in,,,,and tought my nephews and son....there's not a lier in the whole bunch,,,just a little bs,,ing that we all do HA

One of the reason that I was gone for a few day's,,,almost a week,,,I was really really pissed off,,,,and I never talk to anyone that I care for when Im in that mood,,,I used to got to a cpl of bars that ,,,that type of feelings could be taken care of,,,,,blow off some steam,,,sorta speak,,( many many years ago).

We found out,,,One of my nephews,,,,that the reason that his refi,,on his house was not, made ,,,canceled,,was that an attorney for the place that was doing the underwriting,,embezzled 2 mil,,,,and we were not told of it,,,,meanwhile I went to court and filed an emergency stay on his(wit h him) behalf,,and got the sheriffs sale postponed for 60 day's,,,this should give him enough time to get it done.....The law is looking for that lawyer that is out of the country,,,,,,he must have had an 8 bathroom room house,,and all of the other things that one doesn't need...must have felt very confined by it all..Greedy Bastard!!!

Carol,,,,,,that is what makes your camp so amazingly wonderful to me,,,I would love to have one,,,but no where in the states,,,,,somewhere ,,,,,,where no one else has been,,,,had my chance,,,but decided not too,,next time for sure,,,I helped build 2 houses on the mountains in Mexico,,,near Japala,,,and it was 70 ish all year round,,,should have stayed in one of the caves that were there,,,

Oh and you can stop any minute now,,,that is if your not finished teasing me,,,,,thats my ROLE here you know,,,,,,,now Wher is tha Fine Sea Women>???

  142. one for the ladies,,,,,,,How to install a husband,,,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0 .
In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as:
    · Romance 9.5 and
    · Personal Attention 6.5,
and then installed undesirable programs such as :
    · NBA 5.0,
    · NFL 3.0 and
    · Golf Clubs 4.1 .
Also Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2. 6 simply crashes the system.
    · Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.
    What can I do?
    Signed,
    Desperate.
    AND REPLY WAS
    DEAR DESPERATE ,
    First, keep in mind,
    · Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while
    · Husband 1.0 is an operating system.
Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.
    · If that application works as designed , Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

  143. XR, in the winter of '80, Stinky and I were sent to Germany from England. We took our Jaguar over to Zeebrugge on the Ferry then drove down the autobahn to Ramstein. I attended a week of meeting after which we drove up through Luxembourg on the road through the Ardennes that bisects the Battle of the Bulge terrain.

It was on a sub-freezing day and their were clouds of frost in the air. It was incredibly creepy. I could just imagine the panzers crosing into view and the wailing of the wounded and dying.

The Presidents first and most important job is not the safety of the country.

His first and primary job is to {I will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." }.

Yes his job also includes protecting the country and its citizens, but his most important job is to ensure that the Constitution is never desecrated or set aside.

There is never any reason for us to surrender our values or Constitution for safety.

Our forefathers shed their blood and died for the freedoms we have and the rights we have in the Constitution. We will not give up these rights to be secure. We will not allow ourselves to turned into a third world country as the Republicans want to take us.

And if no other road leads to living by our Constitution, then we will take our country and Constitution back.

    Have a good day.

  152. A Poem

T'is like a book, I think, this bloomin' world
Which we can read and care for just so long,
But presently we feel that we will die
Unless we get the page we're reading done
And turn the page, likely not so good
But what we're after is to turn them all.

This is the poem I promised yesterday. I think the author is Kipling but am not sure. This is my secret to getting a new perspective and/or to shake myself awake when I seem to be giving in to inertia -a real danger for me. It has also helped in some bad times -I think its message is calming

I hope you like it - Ivy mentioned last night that it was time for a poetry day or so. Anyone else ready?

I am SO confused - I didn't realize it's coming up on Memorial Day!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all you who have taken time from your own lives to go into battle for us, experiencing things and doing things you weren't made for. I am in awe of your courage and sacrifice.

  153. You know I've been talking about the big splash I have heard when I go out to walk the Magster at night. I hear it almost every night. I turn on the porch light and there is a big kersplash like something big hits the water. What's weird is I see no ripples or water movement. Not great light to see by but enough.

One neighbor mentioned that they had some beavers down the way so I felt better knowing it was something not too threatening.

Well this morning I noticed that one of the large trees in my other neighbors yards, right at the water's edge had a good bit of bark gnawed off. Area of about 4 feet by about 3 feet. Tree is about 2 feet in diameter. I wonder how big that beaver is?? I may have a super beaver. Those neighbors just came out to have a beer on their porch, they hardly ever come, and they noticed the missing bark.

You would think a beaver would have selected a smaller tree. With that tree the beaver could build Hoover Dam. I just used a whole bottle of Tabasco sauce on that gnawed off area to see if that deters that beaver. I need to get a pic of that creature. The tree is about 3 stories tall. It could come down on my camp.

  160. ...a cute story
"We sat motionless in the river's darkness while nearly a dozen beaver displayed vengeful reminders for our intrusion. All around us they bobbed and swam in circles and continued to slap the water in anger and alarm to their fellow mates. We literally floated amongst this ambush for at least 10 minutes in total amazement.

Today, I still remember the look on Brett's face - jaw dropped, a wide-eyed boy. With equal amazement I'm sure I caught a few black flies that night as my mouth hung open in astonishment.

The moral of that story was...NEVER CRASH A BEAVER BASH! "

  180. Yes Jamie. Did you see the damage to the neighbors tree. I posted a pic earlier. I also watched some of the youtube videos about the beaver slap. What I heard was much, much louder. I was kidding about the giant beaver but I am starting to think it could be.

How many moves have you made Jamie? Ever counted?

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 22, 2009 11:25 PM

  181. Carol,

Sort of counted. 21 schools before the age of 17 and never lived in the same town two years in a row and often had multiple houses in a year, though I did go back to one every couple of years. The longest I've ever been in one place was after my daughter was born and we bought a house. That was seven years until the divorce in 1971. From then to now, It would be guessing without a whole lot of thinking, but I'm sure the total moves in 65 years has to be over 40.

    Posted by: jamie44.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | May 22, 2009 11:46 PM

  183. Jamie I think you got my sister beat. She did the majority of her moving after she left home.

I'm not sure how big my rodent is out there but I'm thinking pretty big. I finally figured out what my recurrent splash noise at night was. It's a beaver. The sound would resemble a large person doing a canon ball into water. If that is a beaver slap, it's a big un.

Then I saw that tree damage this morning..... I tried to help my neighbor out by putting some Tabisco, a Louisiana hot sauce, on the tree. Just a temporary fix until they can get some chicken wire. Don't want that tree coming down. It's too close to my camp and it's at least 3 stories high.

  204. Carol, certainly doesn't sound like a Louisiana beaver; the hot sauce would have just egged them on.

Who 'owns' your river? Are there any small feeder streams close to your camp (what a marvelous overlook you have!!)?

I ask the questions because beaver dams often require dynamiting to take them apart. Perhaps the authorities would be interested in what's happening. An ounce of prevention, etc.

If the critters are thwarted on one tree, seems reasonable that they'd try another in the same area.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 8:14 AM

  211. also from that wildlife damage control link:
    "Predator Introduction
One viewer wondered if introducing alligators to a particular area would reduce his beaver problem. While such a scheme may indeed work, WDC is not aware of it ever being tried. There are, however, a number of problems with such a technique. 1. It is probably illegal to introduce new species to an area without special permission. 2. Introducing a new species to an area can wreck the ecological stasis of the area causing more problems than it solves. 3. It is unnecessary as beaver are a valuable resource and trappers can be found to trap them or workers can be trained (see our Store for training information) 4. According to Arlo Kane, a Florida biologists, "Beavers and alligators coexist just fine. Some of the best alligator habitats are beaver ponds. The biggest problem with using alligators to control beavers is that you create a bigger problem than you started with. An alligator big enough to handle a beaver would be big enough to be a danger to the public. Because beavers are generally able to avoid be eaten by an alligator you now have two nuisance problems instead of one."

  212. above post was not meant to suggest that you would bring in a gator to get rid of the beave.... just tho't it was funny that someone would consider such a thing and ask about its efficacy.

  214. Pat, we already have gators out here. They are more likely to hang out just around the corner but I have seen them in the main river here. Saw a few last year from my couch view. Not much goes by without me catching it. One eye on the computer screen and the other on the river.

  215. Craig was talking so fast that my brain is still trying to analyze it.

  216. flatus, re sk expres, is it likely that someone else may have left the "sucide" note and pushed him off the mtn in order to divert prosecution of the rest of the family? tho't his reputation was true blue anti-corrupt. not so?

  217. ct, maybe our gracious host will link us to a replay so that we may parse his words over and over like they do on cable news.

  218. New Orleans has the first tropical depression of the year hanging over it. It will also pellet us with showers this weekend.

Has anyone been following that Huckaby case? How bizarre is that? What is going on with women these days?

  219. We are getting in more women accused of doing vicious things to children also.

  220. No, Pat, he did the 'right' thing according to traditional values.

  221. Craig, I'm confused by your headline. I think you made a mistake in punctuation. It should read:

    What? Does Bush Think?

  222. Say what you like about Wikipedia. They are fast! Natalie Cole's sister, Carol, passed away less than 24 hours ago, and the Nat King Cole bio has already been updated.

Remember the "old" days when you had to wait for as many as two annual editions before info entered into an encyclopedia depending on where they were in the editing and printing cycle?

  223. What awful timing it was for Natalie Jamie. I wonder if she visited Natalie on her way up to say good bye.

  225. "God owns the river Flatus. There are feeder streams everywhere but not right in this area. This is a wide area in the river. Big barges come thru here on their way to a crude oil and asphalt plant a short way up the river. "

Well, as you're praying for Her intervention, it may be that your river is considered a navigable waterway under the control of the Corps of Engineers.

I have no idea at all if they are interested now, but at some point they surely will be. Just don't want that point occurring when peoples' dwellings are being flooded by rapidly rising waters.

Don't worry Carol. As I keep telling my born again cousin, I plan to get lost in translation.

Plus given some of the biographies around here, I doubt we will be alone.

  228. Flatus,
I have not. But I don't live in the homeland.

  229. Joe, where in the homeland did you come from? I seem to remember you are now in DC?

  230. The couple who received millions by mistake are on the run? What a dumb mistake for the bank. Can they be prosecuted when they were given the money by the bank? Might not have too many on the jury who are sympathetic to the bank these days.

  231. If memory serves me right Pat, I don't think that picture resembles any joint I remember ever seeing unless they have gone high tech with their joints these days.

Well it is time for me to go get some things accomplished other than dominating this site with my trivia. I am getting a telepathic message from somewhere that I have surpassed my word limit here lately. You guys can always feel free to write STFU. I'll only cry for a little while. Don't worry.
