White House Correspondents Dinner

Craig previews the White House Correspondents Dinner with Keith Olbermann (MSNBC, 5/8)

FOR THE "OOPS" LIST: My first social blunder of this year's dinner occurred the night before! Last night before going on the air with Keith Olbermann (see video above) I asked our CQ handler for social occasions if we had any celebrity guests. Among Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Christian Slater I thought she said Rachel Ray, the cook. But it turns out she said Rachel Leigh Cook (the actress). My apologies to both Rachels. (Cell phones are dangerous things.)

  13. Great, CSPAN will show the event live. Will it also be on the web since I will not be staying with my cable tv that night?

Wanda is a hoot. Corbert had some gonads the year he did it and I still don't understand why they picked him. Had anyone ever watched him before? Just watching exerpts that year gave me an anxiety attack.

Nice tee C-Bob. Still looking for somethin good for your blog. I'm a little choicy bout what I put on there even if you can't tell. Haven't been out in the boat since "the accident". Maybe today.

Sis will be leaving tomorrow. It was nice to have the company. Someone to cook for and eat with. We only almost came to blows a few times.

I made the best quiche, Quiche Carol, for breakfast yesterday. Make you slap yo mama.

And my sis finally quit coughing a couple of days ago. I was sweating that maybe she had that pig flu. I kept telling her that I was concerned with her cough because it sounded like she was going to cough up a lung. She said "what cough?". Remember she feels that her reality is what she decided to think it is. I guess this La. heat and humidity cured her.

Unfortunately, US workers are hit by Toyota's miscues, too. With restructuring, I believe Ford and GM are becoming well positioned to take advantage of Toyota's lapses.

We have so much at stake, as a nation, in the outcome of our corporations' remake. Now is not the time to embrace those 'Cynicus Americanus' who seem to delight in each failure within American industry.

Quite frankly, if I was going to buy a new car (we just bought one in '98) it would be made in the USA, just like our absolutely trouble-free '98 Chevy.

and for a personal anecdote.... my hubby works for HP.... they had suspended training travel..... all of it was being done virtually..... yesterday he was told they were resuming training in Houston and they wanted him to go to a week long session the first week of June.... this is a good sign....

  61. Jamie,

The White House released this photo yesterday of the $300,000+ flight over NYC & Statue of Liberty.

What remains unanswered is who requested, wanted, proposed the flyover photo event.
No one appears to have accepted responsibility for the original request.

The person who resigned may have authorized it, along with other govt officials, but so far the only reference to the origin of the request seems to be in the 7 page white house review which says the flyover had been in the planning stages since March.

  66. Patd- What was your name for the seashells? Am making them right now.

Posted by: oldseahag Author Profile Page | May 9, 2009 1:38 PM

  67. Coreen, it may well have been something totally innocuous. Like, the crews have to get so many hours of flight time, the F-16 outfit wanted to practice their escort procedures, the photo people said, Wow!, what an opportunity, and the cabin of the aircraft might have been filled with military families on a morale ride. All kinds of legitimate, or least not harmful, possibilities.

The cost of the flight is really a red herring. The airplanes just don't sit around waiting for the prez--there are many legitimate training missions that must be flown.

But, the imbecile who decided not to tell New Yorkers what was going to transpire and why, rightfully got his just desserts.

IAnybody else watch Numbers last night? I don't like the way it seems to be heading.

I'm hiding in my apartment at the moment, lying low. I chased some of the kids out of the parking lot the other day. They're not supposed to play there and have been chased out before, but there they were riding their scooters and big wheels and zippin in between parked cars. Two were about 12 0r 13, but there were four under 5. My sister had driven in to drop me off.

I went straight into teacher mode, and made them leave, but one stayed and pretended to not ride anymore. Stupid kid - he finally started riding again, and then i got mad. I don't tolerate that kind of sneak.

The sad part is that the mom of most of them weas there working in the garden - but no way she could watch them. This woman is wonderful and I hoped she wouldn't get into it. She didn't but I don't want to talk it out. The episode spoke for itself, so I'm trying to avoid it.

I feel very strongly that each kid should have at least ONE person in her/his life that won't give in to tricks, and I'll be that person if I have to. So they hate me - it's worth it.

Bitch, aren't I? Been called a killjoy and wet blanket by the best.

Sturgeone - that was a neat link, but I couldn't look at all those fish. They were too too creepy.

Arrivals are going on now at the White House Correspondent's Dinner. You can watch at C-Span or follow the tweets at #nerdprom and #WHCD.

Bon Jovi and Sting are there. From the screaming in the background, you'd think it's 1964 and the Beatles just arrived.

Jon Stewart: Wimp, Wuss, Moral Coward

Can a Democrat commit war crimes? Of course not!

I was a bit surprised, albeit pleasantly, to see Jon Stewart nail Harry Truman as a war criminal. After all, Stewart is a typical Hollywood liberal, whose politics are by now a staple of the corporate, anodyne culture that permeates the airwaves, and this naturally excludes everything that might challenge the liberal groupthink that constitutes the conventional wisdom in the Age of Obama.

Certainly, in "respectable" quarters, criticism of anything or anyone connected to the great liberal "anti-fascist" crusade, the "Good War," is strictly verboten, and surely an intelligent guy like Stewart knows this. Yet – contrary to what he said later – this wasn’t an argument that arose in the heat of the moment, in the context of a robust discussion with obnoxious neocon Clifford May on the alleged merits of torture.

No, Stewart had apparently thought this one out, at least to some extent, because when May asked him if he thought Truman was a war criminal for nuking two Japanese cities, he didn’t just say "Yes" – he went into a whole riff about how, if we had first demonstrated the power of this new weapon on an uninhabited atoll somewhere, and then informed the Japanese government that they’d better surrender, or else that would happen in Japan, then and only then would it be okay to drop the Big One. The audience cheered him on, as he took apart the frenetically hysterical May, whose ferret-like features and organizational affiliations make him the perfect spokesman for a policy described by Stewart as "temporary insanity." Yet, a few days later, Stewart was back to the same subject, minus the rabid ferret, this time reversing his stance – and apologizing for calling the little haberdasher a war criminal.

    My, that was quick.

Alas, apparently not quick enough for the executives at whatever network Stewart appears on – yes, I know, I have to be the only person in America who doesn’t watch his show – who no doubt would have preferred that he never said it at all. It was clearly the execs who reined in the freethinking Stewart and laid down the law, and the first law of "controversial," "provocative," and indubitably "edgy" television commentary is to never – ever, ever! – allow a deviation from the conventional wisdom that falls outside the contemporary Left/Right paradigm.

Rule number one in this game is that everybody must play their assigned role. You’ve always got to be "in character." If you’re on the Left, you can take on George W. Bush, murderer of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis – but not Harry Truman, killer of even larger numbers of innocent Japanese civilians. Rightists regularly excoriate the crimes of Stalin, yet they are expected to remain silent when it comes to war crimes committed by the U.S., such as the "Phoenix program" during the Vietnam conflict – and they rarely disappoint.

  131. Morning. First of all Happy Mother's Day you mamas.

Next, taking sis to the airport this AM. Nice visit but very tense at times. There is a time limit to family visits especially when when you share so much pathology.

Yesterday I invited a friend from work and her husband/kids to came out to help me take my pontoon boat out. It is a used boat I bought last year for a song. I only bought it because my friend's husband promised to help take it out.

We decided the water was too high so we just BBQed. Ended up with lots of river people stopping by. One said he knew me from work. Always worrisome. Yes, he had been an inmate. I didn't want to ask what for. Remember 1 in 57 adults in La. are incarcerated so not necesarily a big deal. You sneeze wrong and off you go. I did run up and hide my purse.

I watched the Dinner video last night and have a few questions for you guys. I might remember most of them later. One is, what was the joke about Summers and the Women and Girls thing that got booing from the crowd?

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 10, 2009 7:23 AM

  132. Ben Smith:

The hardest shots at aides: The White House, he said, was a now a place to learn and grow. For example, "Larry Summers asked if he could chair the White House Council on Women and Girls," he said, adding that it was "seven hours past his bedtime."

  133. Sturge, please explain the significance of the Summers and women and girls council.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 10, 2009 7:39 AM

  134. 2005 at a conference sponsored by the National Bureau of Economic Research, he said that biological differences between men and women might account for the relative lack of success of women in math and the sciences and questioned the role discrimination might play in the lack of success for some women.
    http://jezebel.com/5087149/why-sexist-larry-summers-shouldnt-get-a-cabinet-slot

Obama treads on thin ice with jokes about Summers since a lot of women think he shouldn't have been appointed in the first place. Obama often makes jokes that for some are not funny.

  135. Wiki:
Summers also served as the 27th President of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Summers resigned as Harvard's president in the wake of controversy over a talk in which he speculated that women may statistically have lesser aptitude for work in the highest levels of math and science.

  137. I can see Coreen and Sturg are nicer -- especially Coreen calling Summers remarks "careless" ...more like he could care less about women. Summers is a pompous prick with a highly inflated sense of self importance and as far as I can tell any woman would be doing a better job.

  139. "If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for thirty days because they get infections and they don't have upper body strength. I mean, some do, but they're relatively rare. On the other hand, men are basically little piglets, you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, doesn't matter, you know. These things are very real. On the other hand, if combat means being on an Aegis-class cruiser managing the computer controls for twelve ships and their rockets, a female may be again dramatically better than a male who gets very, very frustrated sitting in a chair all the time because males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes."

    Coreen,
In the picture in the article you linked, Barack seems to be having a good laugh listening to Wanda Sykes perform (she is so funny, I've seen her in movies). All the shots I've seen of the Obama's look like they were having a good time....I think it was a very successful dinner.

  172. "what appeals to me is the celebraiting of the whole life, the birth, enlightment and death all in one""

You just described it so well in that one sentence Patd. I remember seeing a movie years ago with Debra Winger, where she had that belief, and had a terminal illness. She said she wasn't afraid of death, because it was part of life (paraphrasing of course).

The mother of 11 children, only four of whom lived to adulthood, Jarvis had seen enough death and decided to do something about poor sanitation in her hometown of Webster, Va.

So along with other mothers, Jarvis organized groups that inspected milk given to children, provided food for the poor, and cared for the families of tubercular mothers. When Webster was beset by an influx of U.S. Civil War soldiers, she cared equally for Union and Confederate men.

And when hostilities came to end, Jarvis recognized that her motherly role was not similarly at an end, so she held a special day for soldiers and their families -- a kind of reconciliation between North and South.

Jarvis died on May 9, 1905 -- the second Sunday in May. And in recognition of her mother's warmth, nurturance and unconditional love, her daughter Anna successfully lobbied to have the day celebrated in honour of all mothers."

  191. Solar, I love that site you recommended. I partiulary enjoyed seeing this story about female gorillas clapping their hands to control both males and infants (what a great idea for keeping men in line. :) The reason it immediately caught my attention, is because that's what I do to stop a cat fight outside, or any other kind of ruckus. It works beautifully every time. It beats yelling, and I'm sure anyone within hearing distance appreciates it. So now I clap to reprimand or stop something and sometimes use a whistle to get all of them in at once for feeding time (although they can hear a can opener a mile off).

Female Gorillas Clap Hands to Control the Group
They keep both males and infants in check
"A new research, conducted on wild western lowland gorillas in the central parts of Africa, shows that the primates used hand-clapping as a form of communication, something that had only been observed once before. Females employ this type of behavior most often, and they clap to get the attention of both males and infants, and for keeping the group together."

  231. Solar- sorry I only pop in and out. Am experiencing the perfect storm of jobs right now, all three demanding time, then I have the garden (getting a load of manure this afternoon!) ,tidying up the outside for the season, inside for the boarders, and of course the 94th! Then at the end of the day my couch is screaming for my company- I get comfy with clicker in hand and fall asleep within minutes. Have missed the last 2 weeks of No. 1 Ladies Detective... In a month's time I be back in the kitchen mostly and able to hang out in between batches again. I miss you though!

From this morning's WSJ. This one's for you ('fair use' claimed):

    "By JASON GAY

LeBron James propelled the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA championship Saturday night, scoring 77 points to lead his team to a 109-55 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers and complete a 4-0 Finals sweep. After sealing the win with a thunderous dunk that tattooed the Spalding logo upon Kobe Bryant's forehead, Mr. James celebrated at midcourt by drinking Dom Perignon out of teammate Zydrunas Ilgauskas' size-17 shoe.

"This championship is everything I dreamed it would be," Mr. James said. "But, yes, this champers tastes a little funky.""

  251. More Civillian casulties over the weekend in Pakistan,,

A couple of things happened last week,,,that still has me thinking about them..and have to get it off my chest,,,,before I head out to see my Doctor today

Pres. Obama,,,called the leader of Pakistan,,,and Afghanistan to the White House to ball them out. it seems to me that he told them in no uncertain terms that he wasn't happy with the way that things are developing in those two countries,,,,He told them,,,our plantation,,overseers that he was not happy at all,,,and that if they wanted the continued help ($) from us,,,that they better shape up!! These two Presidents,,,,jumped to and said yes sir,,,we will tell the American people that we are confident of a victory over the Taliban,,,,,and all is right.

What the didn't say was that ,,,those countries are out of control (nearly) we bombed (drones) Western Afghanistan,,,and pushed those tribal war leader to the East and into Pakistan,,,,where t hey are doing a lot of recruiting imo,,,

There are people here ( in this blog) that seems to think that putting that whole area of conflict in the same type of thinking ( blend all of them together) so that they are easier to deal with,,,,( if you seen one of them,,,you seen them all,,,thinking)that we did in Veitnam,,,,and then at iraq,,when we did not know the diff,,between Shite,,and Suni,,,etc,,,and disbanded the military,,,,very big mistakes that we need to learn from,,,,in 1990 we contibuted to the mess there,,,,and we are now paying for them

I don't know how our government is going to think about them,,but I do know now that we don't know what to think,,,O bama's people pretent to know,,,but they don't,,,,they are doing the same things that the Bush Administration has done,,,,More troops,,,,more $ for our chosen dictators to do our dirty work,,,we don't have the troops needed ,,and so we just pick out a person that will do (we think) the leas harm,,,and put them into office,,,between the millitary's war on terror,,,and the civillians little civil wars,,,near revolutions,,,we need to get out of there,,,,we will never win,,never,,,,so now Obama is going to get soldiers killed,,just like Bush did,,,,he doesn't want to be the one on record,,showing that he lost over there,,,just like the Russians did,,,,at least they were smart enough,,,to say enough and went home,,,,we need to leave there just like we left Vietnam,,,,cut our loses and come home!!!

There are still over 2 million refugees from the 1980's ,,,and according to Richard Hollbrooke ,,,that I like,,,but he did not want to acknowledge,,,and he finnaly did,,,is that if they,,in that area were to have a true democratic elections,,,the Taliban would win,,,I knew this,,we all did I think?,,,,what they are realy selling us ,,,is FEAR just like the Bush crowd did,,,,if they have ( I understand ) about 40 to 60 nuclear weapons,,in that area,,,,how are they going to fire them,,,,(wihich they will never get near to do),,,,there are all kinds of electronic,,,,securitties,,,plus many more types of secuities that are in place,,,,,all of this means is that we want the people that we want in place,,and until that is done,,we will give lots of $ to get them.

We are treating the people over there,,,,just like we did the Red man here,,and all of the other skin colored people,,,like they did not count,,,like slaves,,,on the plantation imo,,,,over 60% of the people over there are illiterate,,,,live on $ 1.15 per day or less,,while the 1-5 % of the western chosen people have all of the wealth,,,and we don't know where the $ goes to,,after we give it to them,,

So the only card that Obama has is the $ card,,,,he took those leader to the wood shed and told them that the $ would dry up,,if they did not get their act together,,,and all of the fighting stop,,,,this to me ,,,means that they will crack down on civillians,,,and more of them will die

Then during the week,,,about the same time I saw that Shimon Peres,,,and B. Netanyhoooo was talking to the AIPAC ,,at their annual policy conference meeting (WTF) can you imagine if any of the middle east countreis did that,,they would be thrown in jail,,,what they said was ,,,hey Obama,,,we don't listen to you,,,,we will give Iran 3 monthes to come clean,,and then we will bomb them,,,just do us a favor,,and get the hell out of the way,,,,,,and give us more $ we will need it for more weapons,,,and for our freinds here ( the AIPAC) in the U S,,,so they can lobby your stupid ass,,,so we can keep fighting,,and also so we don't,,and won't except the two state solutiion that your stupid President wants,,,,just send us the cash,,and shut up...that is what I got out of these two guys,,,while that war lord Leiberman ,,,is out visiting his strongest allies,,,for t he upcomming wars,,,,,

What are we to do,,with all of these wars,,,,and of the ones that are going to come,,from diff, parts of the world,,,,,in Africa,,,Yemen is (to me) looking like the Taliban is getting stronger and stronger,,,we will need to be there also??.,,,but maybe not,,,,they don't have the oil that the Iraq area,,,and the Caspian are has??,,We need to get out of there now,,,and that includes Israel,,,These wars will deplete the $ that we don't have,,,and our cities will be in need of more soldiers,,cos they won't be able to stop all of the people from going postal on each other,,,,,lots of unemployed people,,,hating others for what they have,,and the employed screening for less gov. help for the lazy unemployed,,,, Ok this rant is over,,,,,,How did I do,,,,, A. P.

Ps,,,the people that looks like to me that know that area,,,and because they spent a lot of time there,,,is Eric Margolis,,new book out called,,,American Raj,,,Liberation,,, or domination,,, ,,I will get it,,,,,,another source is Global post.com,,,,,ok over and out.

Jack you are so right. Congress bought and sold by corporations feigning "who me?" innocense while they continue to screw the country.

Most of the citizens of the U.S. just want a job, a roof over their head, regular meals, a decent education for their children and enough security that a major illness won't destroy their families. Instead their taxes support unwanted wars that kill off or maim thousands while making billionaires out of the folks paying for the political campaigns.

The Carteret Islanders of Papua New Guinea have become the world's first entire community to be displaced by climate change. The island they call home will be completely underwater by 2015.

Unless AIPAC is funding the Israeli war effort, I think Bebe was talking to the wrong folks. I'm not a huge fan of Israel but not a huge detractor either - sometimes I think they may be our closest ally in the ME, and at other times I think they may be our biggest liability. They tend to be a factor in our relations with every other country over there - at least beyond the oil biz - and tend to distort any diplomatic position we might have or position we might pursue. On the rest of it, I'm wit' you, brudda. Get the hell out.

I think that Israel,,,is our only way to keep things in check over there,,in that area,,,,,,that was my thinking before this new war hungry new leaders took office,,,,I think that they are ,nuts,,and ,were made by the same people that made ,,D. Cheney,,,,but the big diff,,,is that they do have combat exp..and know how to use it??

I remember get hit every now and then ,,,at some taverns for contributions to the IRA,( lots of $ for ,war ,around),,,but what I meant ,,,is that we give Israel $ for whatever,,,and then they turn around and give some of it back to the AIPAC,,,and lobby us congress with our own $,,,,what we need,,,(solve all kinds of problems) is to eliminate lobbying,,,,,when we say that the common people need some one to lobby for them,,,,that's fine,,,but things are out of hand no??

  260. Pogo, Solar,

The Israelis will do exactly what they believe to be in their best long-term interests. Often those interests coincide with ours.

In light of the number of pogroms waged against Jews over the centuries, and even now rumored to be happening in Venezuela, they should be, and are doing, what they believe is necessary for the survival of the Jewish Race.

    I'm on their side.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | May 11, 2009 10:00 AM

  261. Flatus

If we lived in a country that had been invaded by countries on its borders seven times in the last 60 years, we would be a whole lot testier than the Israelis. They are willing to negotiate and have done so repeatedly, but they aren't going to cooperate in their own destruction by countries that refuse to acknowledge their right to exist and who keep violating every peace agreement the Israelis have ever signed.

I think the Palestinians deserve a state. Carve it out of the countries that seduced them into attacking Israel and then locked them up in a no man's land when those attacks failed.

I certainly hope that the Repugs take their cues from the XVP - from the worst adminsistration known to man, and whose popularity and approval ratings are still falling 4 months after they left office, and from the loser in the presidential election, who doesn't seem to understand that one half (or so) of the "fundamental principles" of his party is the wrongheaded embrace of "traditional family values" (remember when the Repugs were "the party of family values?") in the face of a changing social structure in the US. No moderation indeed. I hope they take that advice. Of course the other half of the fundamental principles he thinks are still sound - restrained fiscal and monetary policy - were given away by Dumya and the Dick with the full support of a repug controlled Congress.. Soooo, I ask you, what's left? Eric (It's a listening tour, wait, no it's not, Rush says it should be a teaching tour and what Rush says goes) Cantor? The guy who looks like a CPA and has the integrity of jello? Sarah (I wish people would stop filing ethics complaints against me and pointing out all these embarassing family things) Palin. Bobby (maybe in twenty years I'll look old enough to be taken seriously and will learn to speak in 2-3 syllable words) Jindal? Yeah, right.

    Posted by: newpogo.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | May 11, 2009 10:13 AM

  263. Flatus, Israel and their leaders certainly should be doing what they believe is in their best interests - that's not the issue. What Jamie says makes a lot of sense, and does not provide a lot of hope that peace will be the end result if the Palestinians don't end up with a pice of land to call Palestine. Rejecting the approach that Obama believes might lead to peace is something that Israel has to decide. If their primary support here is AIPAC, and AIPCA has a different approach than our administration, IMHO they are choosing to ride the wrong horse. But it's their horse to ride. The issue is whether we should be joined at the hip with them. I think it does us harm diplomatically if our aim is to try and facilitate peace in the Middle East because the path to peace Israel is taking will NEVER be accepted by its neighbors (enemies).

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | May 11, 2009 10:46 AM

  265. Pogo,

First, I agree categorically with everything Jamie said.

Second, the last thing the United States wants is a unified Arab structure in the Middle East. It would undoubtedly be controlled by the radical religious elements dominating the Arab culture. In no way would such an entity further American interests. And, it would surely mark the end of Israel, perhaps with nuclear exclamation points.

Pogo, please, I'm not being patronizing even though it may sound that way when I say I think you're a generation too young to fully appreciate why things are as they are; there is simply so much history that can't be fully appreciated unless you were a part of the immediate post-war years.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | May 11, 2009 10:55 AM

  266. Flatus, It's been a while since anyone accused me of being too young... IMHO if we present a solid unified front with Israel and the impression that we will go country to country in the region fighting our perceived enemies there, who happen to be primarily muslim countries, we will help forge a unified Arab structure that doesn't currently exist. But then, again I didn't think we should go into Iraq at all - and look how well that went.

Jamie, how silly of me to overlook those icons of the right.

The biggest thing to take into consideration is that oil and water don't mix. As the populations grow, access to water is going to be more important than access to oil which will become less important as the world progressively goes more green.

The water wars globally will make the oil competition look like child's play.
