How 'bout we get him playing jump rope, chanting crazy rhymes as we did when we were kids? Here's a bad one from the good old days --
"Say say my enemy
Come out and fight with me
And bring your weapons three
Climb up my torture tree
Slide down my razor blade
Into my snake pit
And we'll be enemies
Forever more more more more shut the door. "
"Oh little enemy come out and fight with me
bring your bee-bee gun and we'll have so much fun
I'll shoot your eye out and let you bleed to death
And we'll be enemies, oh, one, two, three, four..."

Someone forgot to tell Cheney the party is over.
And give me a freakin' break..according to Frito-Lay...all potato chips are local nothing like trying to co-op a movement.

“This is celebrating the notion of community,” said Dave Skena, vice president for potato-chip marketing of Frito-Lay. “We don’t use the term ‘locally grown’ because that’s a personal issue for so many people.”

If Cheney is duelling President Obama, let's hear what Bush43 has to say, and of course "the greatest SOD ever, Don Rumsfeld" , and all the damn neocons...let's trot out the vanquished once and for all for their last say, and then MOVE ON if we aren't going to hold their feet to the fire anyway.
Obama didn't cave at all...he's doing exactly what he said he'd do. He never promised war tribunals, he was extremely hawkish on Afghanistan and Iraq during the campaign, and of course we found out last year how he stands on supporting Israel (although he does not see eye-to-eye with Netanyahu.
I thought we were done with Cheney...how wrong I was! I am sick to death of him. Let's just ignore him, like i ignore Limbaugh...100%.

Solar - I had already read your post from yesterday, and was a little disappointed to find out that those footprints weren't really homosapiens. That would have been fun to find us that far back.
Flatus - I hope I showed the appropriate sense of honor I felt to think you saw in me some qualities that might be of help to the country, and I hope my long-winded reply didn't lose me any points with you.
We are facing our first heat wave this weekend - groan.
Alex is having a program of his gymnastics class tomorrow night, and I almost forgot! They're really cute and the teacher is a pistol, making them toe the line and making them laugh, too.
It's getting late outside. Guess I'd better go.

Almost had to call Dex to come over last night. When I went to put out Maggie last night, as I turned on the porch light and stepped out the door, something hit the water very close to the bank with the sound that had to be caused by some significant poundage. Scared both of us.
I waited to see if anything surfaced because that much noise had to be caused by something that breathed air. Nada. I did go get my pea shooter to go walk Maggie.
Thought it might have been an alligator so I went to youtube to see if I could find any videos that would give me the sound of an alligator hitting the water. There are some really gross alligator videos there but nothing that gave me the alligator hitting the water sound.

Bethy,
I was overwhelmed by your reply and was somewhat at a loss how to reply.
You are a wonderfully complex person who delights in thinking on a broad ranges of ideas--while maintaining a focus on your core values.
I thought about how fortunate your students are to have had a mentor such as you. And how fortunate your friends and family are to have you in their lives.
And, especially, I am so happy that you have chosen this space as your own.

patd.... the Moral to ROUGHING IT by twain.....
MORAL.
If the reader thinks he is done, now, and that this book has no moral to it, he is in error. The moral of it is this: If you are of any account, stay at home and make your way by faithful diligence; but if you are "no account," go away from home, and then you will have to work, whether you want to or not. Thus you become a blessing to your friends by ceasing to be a nuisance to them--if the people you go among suffer by the operation.

Again following the lead taken here---
"Democats to develop plan to sell health care" NYT
It will be interesting to see if they do come up with an effective "message" to convince the public that their health care proposal is not "a Washington takeover of health care" .
Looks like it will be Axelrod v. Luntz in the message creation.
But am not so sure the Max Baucus' saying that dems will emphasize the idea of "shared responsibility" would be effective.

Like fools, we got out of the car to watch the water moccasins doing their thing. We were, of course, barefoot.

This pisses me off. What happened to the idea that either we had a terror case against these folks or we didn't? Rule of law, what rule of law. Here's my solution - close Gitmo, move the suspects that there is enough evidence to make a cas eof probable cause to bad ass fed pens and start the process against them. Those that we don't have a case against - either send them back to their own country if they will take them back or to some other country if they won;t. If no one takes them, they are ours. This is bullshit.
"Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who met this week with White House Counsel Greg Craig to discuss the administration's plans, said among the proposals being studied is seeking authority for indefinite detentions, with the imprimatur of some type of national-security court.
"Sen. Graham said he wants to work with the administration to pass legislation to increase judicial oversight of military commissions, but noted the legal difficulties that would arise.
"This is a difficult question. How do you hold someone in prison without a trial indefinitely?" Sen. Graham said.
"The White House had no comment Wednesday about its detainee deliberations."
How, indeed? This is the same offensive bullshit we saw with the Bush/Darth cabal. (And by the way, did Graham protest the indefinite detentions for the past 7 years and I just missed it - a distinct possibility - and he's now seen the light of day and the rule of law, or is there some political motive to him now asking that question?)

"The Dumbest Person in the World devoted another lengthy segment to ridicule of Carrie Prejean, an insignificant 21-year-old who recently made the mistake of saying something about same-sex marriage which Olbermann has never even bothered describing. (For the record, her view on the matter seems to resemble that of Barack Obama. And that of Hillary Clinton. And John Kerry and Al Gore.) The big nut went on for almost seven minutes mocking Prejean—and her breast implants. But it’s funny, ain’t it? You’ve never heard a word on this program about the things Marion Barry said.
Of course, the reasons for that are obvious:
Olbermann doesn’t have videotape of Barry walking around in a two-piece swim suit. And Barry is an older man, not a younger woman. As Olbermann has made dumb-foundingly clear, he seems to live for the opportunity to ridicule young women. He never says boo about older man—perhaps understanding they could come to his studio and engage in conduct which might require him to obtain a sphincter implant.
Olbermann’s a woman-trasher—a genuine nut on this matter. And no, we hate to break the news: He doesn’t do “progressive” television. He seems to do work designed to capture the eyeballs of well-meaning young liberals. And for some ungodly reason, he does television which has long been devoted to the ridicule of women’s brains and bodies."

No Flatus, I don't think you're wrong - that is my understanding as well, (but you define what war we're engaged in and who our enemy is and we can start the discussion - terror and terrorists won't do, thank you) and they would be entitled to the protections of the Geneva convention and other international agreements we are party to regarding the treatment of POWs. Small problem - many of these folks are not members of any armed forces of any country against whom we are at war, and arguably are detainees from the war in Iraq, from which we are withdrawing our combat troops over the next year or so, which draws this, like so much else this wrongheaded adventure has created, into a distinctly gray area. But that is not what was discussed, promised etc. during the presidential contest. We were promised a change in our approach - a withdrawal from the war in Iraq - a closing of Guantanamo, and extension of the legal rights the detainees are entitled to. I would like to see something that approaches integrity come out of the administration on this issue.

The big fun is reading and wondering whether or not you would actually put something in your mouth even if it meant winning Survivior. ... Emu brains anyone?

pogo, when a hapless snake fell into boat on the withlacoochee, my mother jumped out into the shallows but immediately climbed back in upon shouts of "snakes in the water" by mischievous sib. needless to say the boat snake quickly became fish bait and brother almost did too. mother was a tough one except when it came to snakes.

The next time some right winger tells you that the environment isn't important, you can use this quote to appeal to their practical side:
"“I’m not trying to save the fish. I’m trying to save dinner.”
Overfishing, pollution, species extinction, and mushrooming human population are wiping out species all over the planet. If they want to go on eating, preservation of habitat is urgent.

Pogo, I agree with much of what you say. My thoughts, though, head in the direction of it 'quacks like a duck, etc.'.
If we can identify those 'combatants' as being part of an organized 'force', despite the fact that the force is not tied to a 'traditional' government, does it not seem reasonable that we elevate their status to that of POWs? And afford them the protections that civilized people confer on POWs?
Conversely, if we are determined to call them criminals, then we had better offer them the common law right of habeas corpus even though our government's repeated attempts to say they are not entitled to constitutional protections?
As I have said on numerous occasions, perhaps not here, though, is that absolutely one of our most important rights is that of habeas corpus. And that once we tolerate our government's ignoring that right in circumstances such we are now engaged, it is only a short step before they start ignoring it to the detriment of American citizens on our own soil.

"The tail, which accounts for half of the alligator's total length, is primarily used for aquatic propulsion.
The tail can also be used as a weapon of defense when an alligator feels threatened.....
An alligator uses its mouth and claws to uproot vegetation to clear out a space; then, shoving with its body and slashing with its powerful tail, it wallows out a depression that stays full of water in the wet season and holds water after the rains stop."

Flatus and Pogo, good discussion.
I think it is breathtaking how quickly we threw civil liberties overboard after 9/11. As horrific as it was, the nation was not at existential risk, as it was during, say, the Civil War, or maybe even WWII. If we were ever truly threatened, it looks to me that we would give up any liberty for the sake of security. Not a good trade-off in even the short term.

We, the general public, don't hold our own guys accountable. We get so caught up in the Dem vs Rep game that we give our own guys a pass everytime they are in power.

I agree with you only partially.I can't prove it but I think most politicians(Obama and Hillary) are taking stands for civil unions as opposed to gay marriage for the sake of votes!Nothing new I realize.....I agree there are some opposed to giving us gays civil rights, hell in the latest polling 49% of Republicans don't want even civil unions for gays..How many years ago in some states was it against the law for people of mixed races to marry??? jax, you could be right, but either they have a case against them after lo these many years and can hold them as POWs or they don't. This is bullshit and it needs to stop. And I would not be concerned at all about them spreading anything in the max security federal pens - they're full of the worst of the worst and they are not likely to care what a captured Arab has to say. And Gitmo was not acceptable as a solution - it was just the status quo.

pogo/jax:
"Or, bring them into our general prison population and allow them access to spread their brand of dogma there."
I don't buy this argument. It is nonsense that we can't lock terrorists up in America.
First, these terrorists will most likely have to be secluded. Not out of fear that they will spread dogma - but because the other prisoners will want to kick their asses.
Second, our prisons house plenty of dangerous individuals. It is BS to argue that placing convicted terrorists in a maximum security prison represents some type of danger to the surrounding community.
(Their whereabouts could also be classified on a need to know basis to minimize the risk of terrorist attacks on the prisons from the outside. Of course this precaution would be eliminated by all these BS bills requiring the local legislature to approve their capativity in the district.)

Victim tells Press TV of Israeli lobby tactics
Thu, 14 May 2009
Robinson, who is a tenured professor of sociology at the University of California at Santa Barbara, ran the gauntlet after he likened the three-week Israeli war on Gaza to the Holocaust in an email to 80 of his students.
The email, which featured juxtaposed photos of concentration camp inmates and of Palestinians in the blockaded Gaza Strip, gave rise to a raging torrent of criticism from American Jewish circles, many of whom accused Robinson of being an "Israel-bashing anti-Semitic".
Robinson, who is slated to be prosecuted for his remarks, hit back at the criticism in an exclusive Press TV interview, saying it would be "absolutely absurd" to equate criticism of Israel with "anti-Semitism".
"This is an obnoxious charge and the Israeli state and its supporters, including the Israeli lobby in the United States has been doing this for quite sometime, saying any criticism of Israel state policy is anti-Semitic, and this is an intentional tactic done to squash any open debate on Israeli policies," said the 50-year-old Jewish professor.
Several groups -- including the California scholars for academic freedom and most recently the Middle East study association of North America -- have come to Robinson's defense and have described the prosecution as "a clear attempt to silence the criticism against Israel".
Universities in the United States and Europe, under increased pressure from Jewish circles, have stepped up efforts to prevent high-profile critics of Israel from appearing at universities in recent months.
Norman Finkelstein's sharp criticism of the Zionist occupation of Palestinian lands has left him without tenure in the DePaul University in Chicago despite his exemplary academic record.
The United States, which claims to be a supporter of human rights but is plagued by the overwhelming grip of the Zionist lobby on politics, has failed to even condemn the aggression.

Tony, Obama's motives for backing civil unions may not be to your liking, but I've never heard him say anything about supporting gay marriage. I don't see the hypocrisy. I can't say one way or the other re: Hillary, but that's outside her bailiwick in any event. Frankly, what they have to say about a matter that is traditionally peculiarly a matter of state law (outside the concept of equal protection if it were brought up and address by SCOTUS - and don't hold your breath on that one) doesn't mean much.

tony:
"How many years ago in some states was it against the law for people of mixed races to marry??? In 25 years the old guard will have died off and I believe this won't even be an issue....Sadly gays will have to wait it out...."
You are very right. I just don't understand how people can't see the parrallels between racism and discrimination against gays. How can you feel that segregation and laws preventing mixed marriages were undeniably a mistake - and then come out and support a Constitutional Amendment that would ban gay marriage.

Hah! You're right. Probably best that we stay away from Krugman... Although you are pretty fun to disagree with.

Another one from Press Tv,,,Netanyahu,,,,is on a swing with his supporting countries,,,,,,,I bet he didn't like or plan on this at all!!
srael comes to blows with Germany over Iran
Germany's special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Bernd Mutzelburg is set to pay a visit to Tehran to discuss measures that can be taken to resolve the Afghan crisis.
The German government's move to send a special envoy to Iran to discuss a solution to resolving the crisis in Afghanistan has drawn fierce criticism from Israel.
Germany's special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Bernd Mutzelburg is scheduled to be dispatched to Tehran for diplomatic troubleshooting aimed at easing the crisis in Iran's war-ravaged neighbor, Afghanistan.
"Engaging the Tehran government in the Afghan crisis, which includes border issues and the repatriation of refugees, would facilitate negotiations on Iran's disputed nuclear program," Mutzelberg was quoted as saying by German daily Handlesblatt.
"Diplomatic negotiations should not start with difficulty but by taking into consideration common interests," he added.
Germany's decision to send Mutzelberg to Iran and engage Tehran in dialogue aimed at resolving the crisis in Afghanistan has however come as a blow to Israel.
According to the German daily, the German move has prompted the Israeli government to call for more cooperation to increase pressure on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program.
Israel -- the sole possessor of a nuclear warhead in the Middle East -- accuses Iran of efforts to develop a nuclear bomb, maintaining that a "nuclear Iran" is the prime existential threat to its security.
Iran, however, says its nuclear activities are only aimed at the peaceful applications of the technology.
This is not the first time that Iran takes an active part in helping with the situation in Afghanistan.
Earlier in March, representatives from more than 70 nations - including Iran and the US - came together at The Hague for a key conference on Afghanistan.
The meeting was organized by the UN amid widespread concerns that not enough progress has been made in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

Obama,,,,to Netanyahu,,,,Shut up and come over here!
Netanyahu stops in Jordan after Egypt
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has paid a surprise visit to Jordan after an earlier visit with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The hard-line Israeli prime minister arrived in Jordan for talks with King Abdullah in the Red Sea port town of Aqaba early on Thursday.
Netanyahu had met Hosni Mubarak on Monday and is scheduled to meet US President Barack Obama next week in Washington, where he is expected to try and ensure continued US support for Israel in its conflicts against Palestinians and Iran.
Thursday reports suggest that Obama had sent a message to Netanyahu to warn him against 'surprising' the US by launching a military attack on Iran.
Egypt and Jordan are the only Arab countries that have diplomatic ties with Israel.
Israel has praised Egypt's collaboration with Israel in enforcing the crippling blockade of the Gaza Strip and its nearly 1.5 million residents.

well, warren, it is fun to disagree, and tomorrow is Krugman day, but I'm going to be traveling, so I won't be able to engage in lively repartee over what is destined to be a disagreement over his column - unless I get stuck in Charlotte or Philly with an hour or so on my hands. Nutz.

For my money, it's hypocritical to claim to be liberal (as do both Obama and Hillary) and still refuse to take a stand on gay marriage. I, too, understand the politics...but still....
Posted by: Patsi

Unless I'm mistaken (and that's happened before) Obama and Hillary have both made clear that they oppose gay marriage -- but favor civil unions. While that might not be a defensible 'liberal' position, it is a rational 'political' position if your long term objective is to work toward equal rights but know it will take time and incremental progress is better than no progress at all. It is political realism. A majority of voting Californians backed Prop 8.

Of course, I've never felt that a religious ceremnoy means anything anyway when it comes to marriage. It's simply a contract to me. I don't see any religious part of marriage in the first place. So for me it's basically a non-issue. And I've never understood for a minute why anyone cares.

patsi, isn't it possible to be a liberal and believe that civil unions and only civil unions are what our form of gov't should be concerned with? and those lawful civil unions then can be or not be termed "marriages" according to whatever religion the happy couple belongs.
as said before, just a matter of updating the statutes, dumping the word "marriage" just like we dumped such words as "sin" "heresy" etc.. we the gov't need to divorce ourselves from the religious terminologies.
come to think of it that sound's more libertarian than liberal huh?

Rendition vs Extradition.
If another allied state files legitimate charges against one or more of our Guantanamo detainees, why can't defer to their criminal processes. In other words, we extradite to them and wash our hands of them.
So long as everything is aboveboard, would this avoid the taint of the rendition programs done under Bush & Co.?

It usually won't kill anyone but it can make a sieve out of them as the little bullet zings back and forth looking for light. Time to get your aerobic exercise, running, in waiting for the recipiant of the bullet to slow down.
I took off work early today because I think my thyroid finally hit the wall. I started at Mexican jumping bean then settled down to energizer bunny and now I am at tortoise or maybe slug. I think I will have to plug into an electric socket to make the rest of the day.

Carol, I think I hear what you are saying about using the minimum firepower that will do the job.
My concern is that it will be so little that it will just piss off whom/whatever you're shooting at.
If you are to use it for defense of your home and yourself from an intruder, then I urge you confront that person with a .357 Colt Python held in both hands. Hopefully, you would never need fire the weapon as your presence would be very intimidating. But if you did, it would be out of fear for your life--a situation where you shouldn't be worrying about hurting the other individual.
If you are worried about a gator with a peanut sized brain, then you'd better get the hell out of there, or have a weapon like Sturg and I suggested that will do catastrophic damage to the animal. A critter that moves against humans is definitely a threat to the community and should be destroyed.
I hope your thyroid is settling down now that you're home. And, I will never mention weapons again; I've said my piece. Something I wouldn't do if I wasn't concerned.

On this project with Sea, I published a photo of the German citizens being walked by the corpses at Buchenwald so that they could never deny what happened there.
It doesn't matter whether these acts were done from the top down (we now know Cheney's "office" specifically requested use of water boarding) or whether it was done by "a few bad apples", the only way to get back our reputation is to expose it all.
The arguement that "they will use it for recruitment" is totally specious. They can step out their front door and get pictures of refugees, maimed children and dead bodies. They don't have to wait for us to publish our pictures.
These pictures are for the American public so they will know what happens when we allow anyone to circumvent the Constitution. We can never again stand for ANY President of ANY party have this kind of power to act in this way for us.

First of all, I want to say that I always thought KO had problems with women, and I still do. He is not a stable personality. He does interview some women, but not many, and he knows Rachel is so much smarter than he that he would never take her on. Also, being kind to a gay person would seem to be proof of his liberal values.
As for the gitmo guys, if we have problems re their being part of an organized force, hadn't we better come up with a new definition of individuals? I'm okay with giving them a trial and locking them up without access to computers.
This may sound flippant, but it's not meant to be so.
I never thought re gay men living in an almost male world and ergo un-sympathetic to women's issue, but if so, would it be sensible to say the same thing re lesbians? I do think those two worlds are un-known territory to heteros, and I don't think that kind of ignorance is good for society - it leads to all sorts of prejudices.
Single-payer madical care is going to eventually come about, I suspect, but will be eased in by trial and error.
I've said before that extreme changes are dangerous and for many reasons. Creating a metric nation here wasn't a big success. Imagine trying to turn Britain into a nation of driving on the right. All those things have logistic designing ad infinitum and nauseum.
I think the heat wave is starting early.

That is my position. As far as the government is concerned, I don't believe anyone should be "married". That is a purely religious and/or social designation.
When it comes to the government, either everyone has the right to "get married" or no one does.

pogo's town and corey's town both lost their Chrysler dealerships today. We kept ours, for now. By June 9, 789 Chrysler dealerships have to be closed permanently.
I used to work for Dana Corporation. At the Fort Wayne plant, which makes axles, 115 jobs were cut with one fell swoop today.
This thing is headed nowhere but down.

Bethy I did consider your suggestion for the noise. I was trying hard to think of something not too bad because I had to walk little Maggie and had to go get my work clothes out of the truck.
I just told my neighbor about it and he said beaver. Wow I never thought of that option. That is a cute and cuddlie option, like it a lot. He said there have been some beavers around. I could have gotten a little more sleep last night if I knew that. And the cousin who just moved him with him is still there so a body is out.

I never thought re gay men living in an almost male world and ergo un-sympathetic to women's issue, but if so, would it be sensible to say the same thing re lesbians? I do think those two worlds are un-known territory to heteros, and I don't think that kind of ignorance is good for society - it leads to all sorts of prejudices."
Bethy
It doesn't sound flippant at all.I think you have made a very good observation.I don't know many lesbians so I really can't answer the question.I think your right regarding ignorance of gay life and prejudices though.I firmly believe if the majority of people really knew strong gay families they wouldn't be so willing to deny us are civil rights....

It is one of my favorite movies simply because it may use gay characters, but it is totally just about human beings.
That is one of the sad parts, but there are equally hilarious ones. Anyone who can keep a straight face while Harvey in robe and bunny slippers comes to get his son after a fight at school is just plain missing their funny bone.

Patsi,
I read/hear where S Palin is planning to collaborate on a book.
I assume, in all likelihood, she will not be writing the book but having someone do the writing for her and therefore she will not be the author. On other news fronts in the global game of chess Obama appears to be waking up to:
http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=6075 (Debka was first in asserting Iran grabbed Saberi to exchange for four Iranians held in Iraq. This trade appears to be going forward once Iran locates the where abouts of Mr. Levinson missing for some time in Iran)
Obama team reconsidering their tact towards Iran and Israel. Today Hizb’Allah admitted it has sent Hamas military aid for some time and that Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Hizb’Allah are all working together. I asserted this a few years ago and more recently last summer during the primary.
The Obama administration also is sending strong new signals to Syria.
http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2009/05/senior_al_qaeda_lead_4.php and this is how Syria repaid Obama’s gestures: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/10/AR2009051002242.html?nav=hcmoduletmv
Obama is preparing a major speech in Egypt and has recently reversed his opinion on releasing torture photos. Obama is now also threatening the UK over release of interrogation information.
http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2009/05/senior_al_qaeda_lead_4.php
Why? Perhaps the military which Obama sorely needs is a. forcing the ground realities on a somewhat idealistic administration; b. militants in Pakistan are closer to grabbing nukes than previously thought, c. the daily briefings show Iran is pushing forward with provocative behavior by proxies and Quds in SA, North Africa, Gaza and Lebanon. There appears to be a push by Russia to sell advanced weapons to Syria and Iran through Belarus.
Perhaps Obama now sees what is really going on. One can only hope…….
I haven’t forgotten Jack’s assertions that “terrorists will never use WMD here in America” (close paraphrase Jack) and Solar’s assertion that US forensics are likely to locate the origin of a WMD attack here or against our allies. There is substantial evidence and opinion to the contrary. Perhaps a Google is in order before I post on these subjects next week.
Thanks Craig for allowing me the forum to share this information with intelligent Liberals……..
And yep, don't bring checkers to this dangerous game of chess..........

"Hobgoblins seem to be small, hairy little men who—like their close relative, Brownies—are often found within human dwellings, doing odd jobs around the house while the family is lost in sleep. Such chores are typically small deeds, like dusting and ironing. Oftentimes, the only compensation necessary in return for these was food. Attempts to give them clothing would often banish them forever, though whether they take offense to such gifts or are simply too proud to work in new threads differs from teller to teller."

"Is it anything like what one your C& W personalities/clients does with you and you are the author? "
Yes -- it usually means that the writer tapes a lot of interviews, gets a feel for the person's "voice" and the story they want to tell, then works from there. People usually say what Sarah Palin did, that they plan to do a lot of the writing themselves....but in the end, they just don't have the time.

Not only is it debateable what constitutes "torture" or that the three given harsh interrogations were exactly the 24 situation both McCain and Bill Clinton talked about, the idea of sinking OUR PRESENT battle in this partisan debate is inane, dangerous and self-defeating. Perhaps you can see the connection between the dots I drew above, yes? And Obama certainly didn't torture anyone, so he absolutely has the eye on the right ball. You would have trials now as Afghanistan and Pakistan fall.

I know what you mean re your sister. One of mine doesn't like black and white (don't ask) and the other one wantsthe sound too high and notices little things her companions do - so you can't swing your foot or eat or move too much etc. So I get back by refusing to watch anything sad or sick - Schindler's List etc. We've

And Solar, a bit from one of the links above:
"The United States needs to determine what consequences would follow terrorist attacks, and to communicate these to would-be state sponsors.” (Levi, 2005) By communicating these consequences in advance of a nuclear detonation, the United States would attempt to convince nuclear-armed states and countries with nuclear-weapons-usable materials to place rigorous controls on these weapons and materials. If this policy is successful, it would constitute deterrence by other means or indirect deterrence. Many analysts believe that direct deterrence of nuclear terrorists is very difficult or impossible. Two government scientists involved in the attribution program have emphasized, “For deterrence to succeed, it is essential that the U.S. have a demonstrated will and capability to hold accountable those who are responsible for terrorist activities.” (Davis and Prosnitz, 2003) They also point out that the physics community has a special responsibility in informing policymakers and political leaders about what is possible and not possible with attribution programs. Political leaders should account for the uncertainties when deciding how to respond to a nuclear attack. An outstanding question is: how much certainty is needed to attribute a source? Even if reasonable amount of certainty is obtained, what can the victim state do in response? If a state transferred nuclear material to a terrorist group, it could have altered the composition of the material to hide the source or to cast blame on another source. (Zimmerman, 2006) Another policy challenge is how to respond if the source of fissile material is U.S.-origin material. Through the Atoms for Peace program, the United States has supplied many countries with HEU for research reactor programs. The United States also continues to supply HEU to medical isotope producers, for example, MDS Nordion in Canada. Would the United States blame itself or the country possessing the U.S.-origin HEU if this material were seized by terrorists? A further challenging scenario is leakage or transfer of fissile material from Russia. How should Washington respond to Moscow if this material were used to make a bomb that blew up New York?"
I would gladly be a bit harsh to prevent the above from happening, wouldn't you?

And I - unlike most - think the question of what constitutes torture is debatable.
And anytime I hear the argument about how we prosecuted people for war crimes - including waterboarding - after WWII - I think:
-only the losing side was prosecuted, i.e., selective justice
and
-actions in an effort to prevent future terrorist attacks is a far cry from actions taken to wipe out or punish an "inferior race"
I am not sure I buy your argument that all waterboarding was taken in a "ticking time bomb" scenario. And following everything closely - I think Cheney is carefully stretching the "facts" to fit his purpose. I think some information was gained through traditional interrogation - and some gained from the enhanced techniques currently at issue. The way that all intelligence is connected and evolves - leaves a good chance that that question can never be resolved definitively.
And one of the most insightful things I have heard is from Tweety. The problem is that the Bush crew tried to change the rules to make torture/enhanced interrogation the rule.
Instead of requiring that imminent circumstances justify a breaking of the law, e.g. like shooting down a passenger plane headed for the White House.
Posted by: warren
| May 14, 2009 11:40 PM
So bottom line - Obama was correct to outlaw these techniques as soon as he got into office.
They should not be the standard operation procedure in the indeterminate "war on terror."
But - I would have no problem - or at least be willing to accept - a situation where the President authorized the CIA to waterboard a suspect - who we believe - beyond a reasonable doubt - has information regarding an imminent attack.
But that President better damn well believe in what he is doing - and be ready to justify his actions.

The good neighbor explanation that I have heard from many is that gay men keep their homes and yards very well - and of course, mind their own business. You seem to prove that. I've even heard that some
"neighborhoods" actively try to sell to gay men.
My point is that that is the only comment I've ever heard about gays period, that wasn't spoken in a whisper, full of outrage or shock - the kind of stuff that makes me want to roll my eyes.

Solar Ovens 101 -
Every one has been designed to help the poor charcol burner, that is say how do we build a small solar oven out of tin foil and card board. The whole world has been thinking about this problem for 40 years.
Wrong place, the street vendor. When they see a street vendor, selling hot food, and not paying a nickle to cook it. No propane, no charcol.
Just the sun shining on a special kind of cart, with wheels and handles. ( Insert light bulb here)
All the plans , all the work we will publish on the net. The day we post the last clip, ..... someone in India can grab the designs.
We will prove my point here at Lubbock this summer, cooking corn we grew for this oven. 100 ears at a time.
Solar Cooked Corn -
Roasted, boiled , and baked in foil.
3 - ways.
Bread -
Larry's new girlfriend was a baker, she also has a Masters in Fine Art.
We will bake all day Thursday ........ 10 15 loaves at a time. Bake all day Friday.
Yum, solar powered bread.
My friends have no idea this is coming.

The really great thing about this , I'm making one for Pogo's Backyard,
and one for a small street vendor in Mecca, or El Paso.
Neither will have to buy a charcoal briquet again. Or buy propane.
I've been busting my ass on this , and we're about to build an oven 30 X 36 , on wheels, that will make 400 degrees by 11:30 A.M. ..... if the sun comes out.
Don't invest any more money in Kingsford Charcoal folks.
