Speaking as a white male, I'm tired of nuts representing my kind. "Identity politics" is the latest war cry from the angry white male camp led by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Pat Buchanan and George Will.
During the last presidential election I was chatting with a white male friend who was planning to vote for Barack Obama but asked, "How can a black man with such a weird name ever get elected?" I replied, "Because we don't run this country by ourselves anymore."
Nobody called it identity politics when only white males had the power -- like when they wrote our originally racist and sexist Constitution (which could explain why the white male crusaders are so fond of "strictly interpreting" the Constitution as it was originally intended).
So what if President Obama picked Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court because she's a Latina who happens to be qualified? On the Supreme Court, as we've seen in the White House and beyond, it is about time for some politics of diverse identities.

Thanks, Craig, time to cut to the chase.
This is the nomination that will separate the neo-Republicans from the rest of American humanity.
And, Max has it all wrong. The Bill of Rights does not look for ways to proscribe human activity, but ways of guaranteeing that the minority may engage in activities that the majority finds offensive or objectionable.
And, Tony, you never need worry about justifying your existence. Screw them if they can't take a joke.
Bethy, we did feel a personal connection with Roh; he was a true liberal in a part of the world that still has trouble recognizing the desirability of that breed.
Stinky has me on a short leash. It's upstairs to clean my 'office'. Or else. Really.

My grandfather graduated from college in 1901. He was a lifelong Republican, a true humanitarian, an investor, a philanthropist, a conservative, and a liberal.
But, those were the days when we were still growing the country and depended on each other for that growth.

Craig, Oh Craig, What popular banter that only adds to the distraction and fails to exam the reality. But that is what pundits do – fuel the argument. So you agree that Sotomayor was picked as a Latin and less on qualification?
Craig you also say..” During the last presidential election I was chatting with a white male friend who was planning to vote for Barack Obama but asked, "How can a black man with such a weird name ever get elected?" I replied, "Because we don't run this country by ourselves anymore."
Now WHY did Barack get elected?
Instead of stating the facts that this country is moving on (we will never reach an idealistic point) – you join those liberal fellow Dems with simplistic response as they need the racist argument to provide a distraction.
I worry when some protest too much – as this type dialogue is not part of the solution
All should feel better about our Country

that socialism scare talk by gopers is ironic since wasn't it a republican administration that, for the public good, spent us into debt to construct the transcontinental railroad (to rail cos incentives of $48,000 and 12,800 acres of land for every mile of track built) and gave away 160-acre plots (270 million acres by time homestead act ended in 1986) to anyone over 21 who would homestead, including aliens. and wasn't it a republican administration that most recently spent us into debt again, bailing out the banks among other things, supposedly for the public good?

thinking of the homestead act gave me an idea... since we now own the major stock in the companies holding a lot of foreclosed property, why not reinstate a similar program to give those properties away to qualified homesteaders? at least this time we aren't stealing land from native americans.... just from rich greedy financiers.

mornin'
Craig, ain't it th' truth? I got a huge laugh yesterday - while at home having the chimney swept, I had MSNBC in the background - they were interviewing a panel including one "Republican strategist" whose name escapse me. Asked about whether the hyperbole about Sotomayor would hurt lhe Repugs, he said that you'll notice that no elected officials who are currently serving are saying these things --- then there was Tom Tancredo on CNN foaming at the mouth over Sotomayor's alleged membership in La Raza (NCLR) which he described as a Latino KKK without the hoods" - btw, it decidedly is not. I wonder why he didn't bring up La Raza or the fact that Gonzales served on the board of one of the NCLR's oldest affiliates when Alberto Gonzales was nominated for AG? Probably because he doesn't know what La Raza is or what which La Raza Gonzales or Sotomayor were members of.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=41628
"Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLR’s oldest and most respected affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans in Houston, Texas," she said. "Moreover, during his tenure as White House counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations."
Posted by: newpogo.myopenid.com
| May 29, 2009 8:49 AM
Oh, and I don't think John McCain will speak ill of Sotomayor's La Raza membership - since he spoke at the 2008 NCLR Annual Conference, as did Obama.
such Racist orgs as Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, Comcast, Citi, Ford, AT&T, GM, Pepsico, Toyota, Mcdonald,s Kraft, Verizon, UPS & the list goes on and on sit on NCLR's corporate board of advisors - just like the KKK. Tancredo - what a f*cking idiot.

Craig,
You are so right. As a white male, I think there are a lot of us -- maybe a silent majority -- for whom Rush, Sean, and Newt do not speak. We are moderate to liberal in our views, even if we believe in a strong national security policy and maybe go hunting once in awhile. We also believe in a woman's right to choose, treating people fairly across the board, even if that requires actions to redress old, historic inequity. And what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home is their business and if they want to get married -- well, let em.

"I do not understand the Anger?"
Ping -- that's the sort of thing people in power always say when an ugly truth is exposed. "What is it you WANT????"
What Craig wrote is INDEED important to the dialogue. Just as it was important that in the '70s, I questioned some of the women speaking "for me" as fellow feminists....if I didn't question them and their motives, who would? It is likewise important for Republicans to start standing up to that crowd of ugly white males (and to the blondes the right send out to talk "family values" on cable).
Same with other issues. I know blacks who have been very angry that Al Sharptomn seems to "speak" for allblacks. And gays who cringe when Perez Hilton shrieks on television.
Criticism must start at home, Ping.

Craig,,,,great thread
It takes a lot of courage to make this statement,,,out in the open,,sorta speak for you,,,and have a lot of balls,,and glad that I know you,,,at least from here on tm,,,
"Nobody called it identity politics when only white males had the power -- like when they wrote our originally racist and sexist Constitution (which could explain why the white male crusaders are so fond of "strictly interpreting" the Constitution as it was originally intended)."
I haven't wanted to say anything about the dying newspapers,,until now,,,,there has always been the news papers ( I worked for one for 8 years,,advertising) that wanted to do the right thing and inform the public of what is actually happening,Ill go back as far as when the AP first started to report the Invasion of Mexico, by horse back messengers ,,,half of the the newspapers sold the war for Pres,,Polk,,,and half were against it,,,Telling the truth like you do it,,,every time that you appear on tv.of on TM..,
Nothing has changed all that much,,,some papers try,,but most of them are run by the their political leanings,of the owners,,,so Im all for letting them die off,,,,they had a lot to do with the selling of the ideas,,,that the Indians,,were to stupid and did not have any morals,,and ,god did not want them to have the lands that were theirs ,,,the papers pushed the same Ideas,,about the blacks,,,and anyone that had a good tan, they were a huge part in not giving the blacks,,women
,,and other's the voting rights that only the men had,, they helped to promote the bad wars,,that should not have happened,,,VN,,,Iraq,,,etc, etc,, the web is the way of getting the truth out there,,,but the problem is how to get it to the poor,,so they can get the education that it gives??,,,thanks for you courage to do so....
Tony,,,
Don't listen to Max,,,,,,he is kinda of right about evolution,,,,,but he omits quite a bit of scientific information,,,,like,,,why the gene that makes some gay ,,has not died off yet if it was so inferior,,,it never will, they too are strong and, fit,( phyisical,,not the mental bs,,he is selling )that they haven't lost the ability to reproduce,,,just choose not too,,but some do,,and have children,,that contribute to the gene pool, that keeps ,it alive,,, and he chooses not to say that,,we have always had ,,through out time Leaders,,,Politicians,,,and soldiers that were gay, the,,,the romans,,the british armys ,,ours have always had them,,,the politicians made them the taboo that they are ,,,with the help of that good book,,,the Bible,,,,,in the animal world,,,,there has always been that gene also,,,,,,even in the T rex,,,,and you are the tm's T rex,,,don't take any shit from him,,,he does like to use science fact,,and manipulation,of it,,to make his points,,,,,I think that he should get out of my Indepndent party,,and get his but over to the R's where he belongs,,,he has all of the qualifications no?

Thats what we need,,,,small newspapers that make a diff,,,,neighborhood by neighborhood,,,I met a lot of interesting people that worked in small newspapers,,,used to hang with them,,,at a place called nights inn,,,,one of the most enjoyable person there was a guy that always ran against Mayor Daley,,and some of the writer from the other small papers there a lot,,,a few politicians came by from time to time,,,and got harassed in good fun,,,,,as time went by,,this became,,,less and less,,,I think that the family owned small newspapers will always have a way of reaching people in a lot of many way's,,,,,the chamber of commerce,,(community's ) senior citizens programs,,local news,,the personal touch that the big ones don;t have,,and much more,,,

Sorry, but I don't think Max IS right about homosexuality being selected out of the genetic pool because they don't reproduce. First of all, not only can homosexuals reproduce, historically they have reproduced -- yes, the old fashioned way. Culture does come into play here. But also, like many things in nature there is a range of how behavior and genetic predisposition play out. It is quite possible to be genetically predisposed to homosexuality while living the life of a heterosexual. So, it is simply not true that homosexuality is a genetic trait that would die out because homosexuals do not reproduce. It's much more complicated than that.

Ah c'mon, republicans 'sold' the gonzales, thomas, scalia, and o'connor nominations on the basis of their 'minority' status.
reagan touted o'connor as "the first woman", not as the most brilliant jurist.
reagan hyped scalia as "the first Italian-American", and if you spoke against him, meese and buchanan tagged you as anti-Italian.
The White males on the SCOTUS still number 6. Or, only 3, for those republicans who don't count Jews and Italians as Whites, and who worry like pong that their hegemony and privileges are threatened. pong is feeling oppressed because out of 115 Justices ever appointed, there were already 3 who were not white males, and now there will be a 4th !
OH GOD, WHERE WILL IT ALL END ??? ( ;>D)<
This is the typical worry about race and gender that the republicans use to scare redneck bigots into coughing up more cash.

Ping,
Of course you can say you love me.
I just find the RW arguments against Sotomayor so depressing. It's not so much that the blowhards are making all the "quota" arguments, it's that none of the responsible Republicans are telling them to shut up.
As I wrote yesterday, once you have the intellectual and career qualifications met, then you want the broadest possible life experience on the highest court as a way to make it responsive to all of the citizens.
Edmund Burke is a bit of an Icon for Conservatives and even he recognized that precedent and original intent are important but so is the ability of law to change over time to reflect society. It should move slowly, but it should be able to move or it will cease to exist.

Seems kind of odd that there is such a battle over such a small increment in diversity.
Female - been around forever. Or so I've heard
Hispanic - Family probably here since before the anglo unless she's mixed.
Catholic. 2,000 year old church. What, I think 6 others are too.
While different than the traditional justice who is usually white, male and protestant or jewish it's not a big leap.
How about Indian Hindu or Sikh, Gay Eskimo, Thai Buddhist, Atheist, Navajo, Japanese Shinto, Arab Muslim for some diversity?

Thanks, SolarCrete. Yes, we're pals, and there's no need to rush.
Anywhat, let me give you a better metaphor than I have that may help you to understand my objection.
Let's say that we all agree that money is highly desireable and that you are a little rowdy and assertive. Then, let us note that there is a vast heap of money lying in a bank vault only a few yards from your house. Are we to conclude from these facts that you intend to rob the bank ? No, because although we have an opinion about you and know that there is a treasure next door to you, the mere conjunction of those facts does not demonstrate your intentions.
In the Israel/Litani River hypothetical, propagandists connect an opinion about the character of Israel with the fact that Israel is near a valuable resource, and want us to jump to the conclusion that Israel is planning to grab that resource.
I am always suspicious when people ascribe thoughts, intentions, motives, etc to other people. In order to practice this art with any accuracy one must become a really expert mind-reader. Besides, most people don't know themselves why they do half of the things they do. That being the case, how can anyone living in an entirely different skin or even political culture know the motivation?

Hello Chlo,,,,just wanted to say hi,
XR,,,,,thanks and point taken,,,so in my,, approach to this,,,im not going to say it is a definite conscience choice,,,and you are right about it being conjecture,,,,but there is convincing motivation. and, after the fact,,,is sometimes too late.

Funny line of the day on the subject of Prop 8. Susan Etheridge calling in to Stephanie Miller and all chatting with a gay comedian (Hal something didn't catch the last name).
"Marriage will happen eventurally. We already have our own cable channel."
I'll stick in a commercial here. Even if you don't watch it regularly, check the programming on LOGO. There are some truly good shows and movies that appeal to everyone not just their target niche market.

Today is the 556th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks, which changed the world, and gave birth of the Modern Age.
As a result of the fall and the Ottomans' import and export duties, Spain and Portugal began to look for cheaper ways to the Indies. Their searches led to the discovery of the Americas and a tidal wave of crime : murder, rape, pillage, and usurpy that the world has ever seen. For the next 500 years, Europeans would sweep across 5 other continents, using their advanced naval and firearms technology, and their exotic and deadly diseases to astonishingly devastating effect.
On the bright side, as a result of the Ottomans' success, my relatives now speak English, rather than Swedish and Italian.

catching up now that I'm back home....
"thinking of the homestead act gave me an idea... since we now own the major stock in the companies holding a lot of foreclosed property, why not reinstate a similar program to give those properties away to qualified homesteaders? at least this time we aren't stealing land from native americans.... just from rich greedy financiers."
patd.... in all seriousness.... that is one of the best ideas I've ever seen proposed on this blog....
of course the trick would be in detailing what is meant by "qualified homesteader"..... I think someone with an adequate paying job.... who agrees to live in said home for a specified number of years... say 5-10.... agrees to spruce the place up in a certain time frame.... it's amazing what a few coats of paint can do for a place..... and agree to keep the yard clean and free of trash.... these are basics for starters..... it would get neighborhoods looking like neighborhoods again.... and put those homes back on the tax rolls.....
xrep... it's really great to see you posting again....

For searching a day's worth of posts in i.e it is the same as Firefox. Go up to Edit, click "find on this page" on the pull down menu and type in your name. It will take you to the first one and then you can just click for all additional postings on the same thread.
Not sure how you would do a global search for all your words of wisdom since the beginning of time as we know it.
I can google all my blog articles with key words in Google, but I don't think that would work for forums unless you were very specific about what you had written.

Warren,
That was sort of my reaction. Neither the WH or Sotomayor should have retracted even a little bit. It was a perfectly understandable remark within the setting where she was speaking.
Why give the clowns even a little bit of respect. They were being ugly and vicious and now the White House has backed down when they should have just spit in their eye.

Solar, You have to do each thread separately. For instance, open the June 1 thread, click edit, find. In the box, type solar or solarcrete and click next. If the box turns red, then you have no posts on that thread.. So move on to the next thread and start over. If you do have a post on the thread, the page will go to that post and highlight your name in green. I tried a few of them for you and you hadn't posted on those first few days of June that I tried. It can be time consuming. But at least you know it's after June and before September 10.

Solar - October 9 was my first response to you. I've been emailing my posts to myself to keep myself honest. I was giving up hope of finding it as I thought it as earlier.
I have to ask - are you going to crucify me with my own words? force me to take those old words back? Gee,
Solar, I thought we were friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would not recommend re-reading one's old posts. Well, it might be okay for you guys, but I was intimidated
by my own posts. I certainly do come on strong
People have told me I write the way I talk - I sound like me, and I have to agree basically. But I seem to just jump off the page, but my god, I'm not like that and don't want to treat you like that.
All I can say is that it's probably from my teaching - the staccato that and that....and that...and that. I want to break that habit - I'm not like that. At least I don't feel like that inside.
I think it's also because I try to keep it as short as possible, even tho I tend to fail. Imagine if I didn't try to keep it short! (groan)
Nice to see darklord here - been awol way too long.
MaX - I think the things you said late last night were
appalling, and I won't take part in any of the discussions that might come up because I don't want to see or hear such words again. One last thought:
the rights of the majority are not really threatehed.
TONY - TONY - please don't read any more of that twaddle. You are delighrful and breezy and kind and gentle and ebullient and happy and solid and generous
and sparkling and funny and warm - every good thing one can be. I've just discovered a new virtue of gay men - I can tell you how wonderful you are without being suspected of flirting!
May I add that I don't agree that nature is conservative?
I think it is passionate and wild and frenzied and obsessed with variety - thunderstorms and earthquakes and two-headed snakes and poisonous flowers that smell divine and hermaphrodites are not conservative. Nature is constantly casting out to try new things, is wildly creative. Its liberality is a model for us all.
May I add that we seem to be forgetting the existence of bi-sexuality, and trans-gender.
May I also add that the Bible was written by men, yes, and old men who've spent too much time alone in the desert.
Oaky, I'm done. I'm going to go now and ponder how to tone down my abrupt entrances with my posts .. I tried already - can you tell?

This is one great comment and I'm touched by it...It is so smart just like you.I also think you bring a reality to homosexuality that most folks don't give much thought too..Which I understand also.I'll admit someone smart as Max using science as a weapon to deny any people there rights is offensive to me. I didn't lose a minutes sleep though because I've been dealing with anti-gay sentiment my whole life.I remember in the early 90's Blake a fellow co-worker and myself weren't invited to the assembly line x-mas dinner because we were gay! The 2 people on the line handling the dinner were evangelicals and we were of the devil..It got corrected by management but ultimately being excluded we just stayed away not going where we weren't wanted...I still think of Blake sometimes and what he had to endure at GM.Blake was a small effeminate guy with poofy Madonna hair and lots of ear rings.Oh they were cruel to him putting him on the toughest guy jobs and watching him try and try till he would cry..So I get it and i just keep telling myself time heals all wounds...

""Palin is getting attention because she is emphatic. She looks straight in the eye and points her finger and pounds her fist, and says, Yes, I want to do such-n-such. What about it? She doesn't mind her opponents thinking she is un-reasonable.""
That is the way I sound - like Palin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm really not that way - from the inner of my soul, I believe in live and let live, and taking people as they are. Nobody needs to change for me - you could even call me meek (if you really knew me.) I just speak emphatically!
Boy, I hope you guys can read between the lines.

Actually, Patsi, I'm not really apologizing. I'm dismayed.
I have a real phobia of not being understood. god only knows what that means, but I really don't want to be mean or malicious. It's a very strong feeling. Thanks for the comment, tho.
However, I have to get dressed because I've been blessed to have the privilege of picking Alex up from his french school today. It doesn't happen often enough!

Congrats on your new book. What's the appropriate good luck wish for an author? Break a pencil?
Couldn't agree more about Tancredo...and we have lots of company
"Tom Tancredo has officially lost his marbles. (Video here.)Today, in discussing the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, he said:
TANCREDO: If you belong to an organization called La Raza, in this case, which is, from my point of view anyway, nothing more than a Latino — it’s a counterpart — a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses. If you belong to something like that in a way that’s going to convince me and a lot of other people that it’s got nothing to do with race. Even though the logo of La Raza is “All for the race. Nothing for the rest.” What does that tell you?"

Was I right about the date and was that the correct post?
And the idea of being frozen and brought back to life years later - nope, I still have to regretfully decline your generous proposal. LOL
Flatus - I been in therapy before but never thought to ask re it. I suspect it's just a personality quirk - some people I know do NOT want to be understood at all and I can't understand that at all.

I like the White House's move of address Sonia's quote.
They look like grown ups.
I know anytime I discussed the quote - I would acknowledge iit was poorly worded. Any attempt not to simply ruins your credibility.
And now look at the reaction of the 2 parties:
Dems - it was poorly worded, but in the context here is what she was getting at....
And out of her hundreds of opinions - there is nothing to support the ridiculous charges of the Republicans.
GOP - KKK!! She is a racist!! She hates white people!!
All weakness is not weak.
(I get that you should be reluctant to apologize or "walk things back" in politics since it will come back to bite you. But I don't think this is one of those cases.)

"According to nature" you want to live? O you noble Stoics, what deceptive words these are. Imagine a being like nature, wasteful beyond measure, indifferent beyond measure, without purposes and consideration, without mercy and justice, fertile and desolate and uncertain at the same time; imagine indifference itself as a power---how could you live according to this indifference? Living--is that not precisely wanting to be other than this nature? Is not living---estimating preferring, being unjust, being limited, wanting to be different? And supposing your imperative "live according to nature" meant at bottom as much as "live according to life"---how could you not do that? Why make a principle of what you yourselves are and must be?

I like that Susan Molinari. The grown-up members of the GOP need to put some of those fools in line.
I thought it was interesting on MoJo when they tallked about the GOP losing in terms of "politics" - the area in which they always excelled.
(I mean it used to be the left who wore their heart on their sleeve - but couldn't put the organization in place.)
Guess that shit about the wilderness is true. What used to be a calculating, connected and consistent operation - is now turning into Lord of the Flies or something...

I'm glad she's not running either. The girls run against the boys in Europe, but the tracks tend to be much wider with longer straight aways so you don't have all that crowding at the rail. It tends to be more of a "race" rather than all the maneuvering for position.

I have no excuses for using the coffee table for the feet now..Shoes,I try not to wear shoes other than when i exercise..I wear flip flops all year round...I had a very good day.It was busy as we took on a new client to replace one that went back to RI for the summer..Its usually harder the first time you go in a house as you don't have your routine down.It takes time to learn where everything is.Also takes more time going over the client wish list and bringing things back to cleanliness...Base boards, light fixtures, fans etc all have to be done as usually everything is bad..But once you get everything in line its a breeze..I just returned from my hour on the Elliptical and I feel good, went for a swim and now I'm talking to you guys..How was your day?? Did you make Judy laugh today with one of your jokes??HA HA you funny...

Yes it does. The solar heating has a feature that I turn on to cool it down..It comes on at night.I mostly though just run the pool pump less and put a floater chlorinator in the pool.I save energy and all is good.I have a simple plan and that is 1 bag of shock every Sat and run the pool pump 6 hours.I fill up the in line chlorinator and the floater and test the water.I occasionally have to add an alkalinity plus chemical if we get a lot of rain..

Carol, Nice fat rabbit, you must feed him well. :)
I read somewhere that rabbits especially love plants when they're young and tender. Maybe you should try a little mercy garden, like Flatus recommended to me. Just pop in a few seeds a little way outside the pen that you don't care if they eat (something fast growing and tasty). It may be a good distraction, plus keep your bunnies fed. I imagine at some point, you're going to have to open the top of your chicken wire enlosure when the corn gets too tall.

Chloe, did you see the length of the grass/weeds in my back yard? Have to cut tomorrow.
I left lots of wines/grapes on the back fence for rabbit habitat. You would think there would be something that those wabbits could eat besides my 14 corn plants. Well hopefully my enclosure will work. I hope C-Bob realizes how important I think his project is with the effort I put into my corn.
If it makes it I will learning to ground corn and make blue corn chips. Now what kind of medicine did he say blue corn was used for?

LOL Carol, I can't remember what medicine he said. But someone did post a site (I think CBob) for cheap blue corn meal.
What I read said those wabbits prefer the young plants though, so if you can mature them enough, maybe you'll be ok. So far, so good on my plants. I'm waiting to see too, though.

Blasting could result in still too high, normal, or too low. I have been off the antithyroid meds for over 2 weeks now and I know I am not really, really high anymore. I am shooting for normal. It would be different to be normal for a while. I'm not sure I would like it though.

Thank you for the wishes.
Hmmm, most dangerous thing. I started flying when I was 15, climbed down a sheer cliff at night at 16, took a hairpin turn (accidentally, and thank goodness for power steering) going in at 80 mph at 17 , joined the Air Force as a explosive ordnance disposal technician and started playing with C4 at 18, then I started getting stupid. I guess only one or two wild things a year. I've never been an extreme athlete, for one thing I'm not that good a regular athlete.
Now days I know I don't bounce so it's a lot less physically dangerous, more doing things I have a fear of. The fact I have fears I consider a good thing. I like sailing and kayaking because there isn't as far to fall, I drive a four cylinder with four wheels and haven't been off-road in years. Now the most dangerous thing I do is refuse to tip a snooty waiter.
I once wanted to know where all of my limits were, but discovered as I pushed boundaries, the next time I tried to push further I had further to go.
I suspect there are few people on this blog that are the same way. There's a lot of wisdom here and you don't get wise unless you really live life.
One of my favorite quotes from Second Hand Lions.
Sheik's Great Grandson: [speaking of Hub and Garth] So... they lived?
Adult Walter: They lived.

Not dull and darn lucky. I've always said God takes care of fools and children, and I'm getting a bit long in the tooth.
Going back over messages. Carol, I gather the cherry turnovers are for hyperthyroid? I have a birthday cherry pie, I'll be happy to share. I want you to feel gooder.
Been thinking about the intolerance topic earlier. Isn't intolerance really about power? My group, that I control, against your group, that I don't control? So you get people to follow you by creating a group identity and talking about that other group of less worthy people that are causing all the trouble. In extreme cases you blame them for all of your problems and try to kill them off.
While bigotry seems to have been around forever in the US, really we're such a young and fluid country values change pretty quickly. I was watching a news video about rat catchers in India. The untouchables aren't allowed to get desk jobs because of their family, so one group is paid a dollar a day to go smoke out rats for farmers. They have the extreme luck of getting to keep the rats for dinner. A few hazards, breathing the smoke all day the men tend to die early.
The caste system is probably at least centuries old if not millenia. So for all of our bickering about civil rights here in the US, the fact that we're even addressing them makes me proud of the people who live here.

I always think of intolerance as just the companion to ignorance. It makes it easier for me to tolerate Don. Can't really fight it. Living and learning might eventually cure it if not then too bad for them.

I can find something good in just about everyone. In my older age I try to concentrate on that part.
And just about everyone has something he/she can teach me. I have learned a lot from my patients over the years, more than I ever learned in any classroom and I spent a lot of time in classrooms.

So true. I learned so much from the year I spent teaching high school. I had to quit because of my health, but when you're a teenager you question everything and view life a lot more simply and directly. It was a great experience. While I was exhausted I was really sorry to leave.
It seems to me we spend a lot less time day dreaming as we get older. I miss that too.

I've fought depression since I was a teen. I've come to accept it as just a bodily function and realize I'll have to wait until it's over. Still, the sun doesn't seem as bright those days.
I take the little bumps in life a lot less seriously now though. There are so many great things in life there's no reason to dwell on the challenges.

| May 30, 2009 12:29 AM
I was looking over your earlier post where you describe challenging fear. Those were fun and exciting times. Then the years go by and that fear gets a little scarier by the day.
That transition was rushed a little for me because of my nursing career. My first job was in ICU/CCU. Nothing will slap the reality of mortality in your face like working there will. I begin to realize just how vulnerable the human body was. Kind of took some of the fun out of life. From that point on instead of challenging fear I was always looking for a soft place to land.
Posted by: ct
| May 30, 2009 12:32 AM
I'm sure you've seen the worst. Knowing the consequences would certainly take the fun out of a challenge, and of course you only see the failures.
My brother gave me his 750 Gpz motorcycle after he married a nurse. She'd put up with a lot but not that.
I wanted to try lots of things, experience life. My motto, I'll try anything once, twice if I like it and thrice if it's kinky. :^)
But right now I think I'll try to get some sleep. Night and thanks for the conversation.

Really good and neat posts tonight. I was at my sister's being waited on and fed filet, baked tater, and salad as a bribe for house sitting for tomorrow night, one night, until her real house sitter can be there. Not bad, huh?
Of course, that sister is off for Cabo fo a week with her granddaughter, baby's parents, and other grandma.
For me intolerance is pure and simple fear - of the inknown, of challenge to security, of many things.
Don, if you have been dealing with depression since your teens, have you also had professional help? When you say you've come to accept it as a bodily function it's hard to tell what that means. If you haven't had professional help, you're making a big mistake.
I've dealt with depression since I was born. Many times people would say 'oh, you're just depressed'
and that was that. Eventually a therapist listened to me and one specific thing I said prompted him to say
immediately, "That's depression." He got me medicine and I've been taking some form of anti-depressant almost full time for almost 25 years.
Whether I was born with it or developed it , and it's
probably both, it's always been there. One of my grade school teachers wrote in my report card that I'd "probably be a happier healthier little girl if I gained some weight."
If you get sad, that's one thing. If you are carrying around a bag over your shoulder that weighs hundreds and hundreds of hard cold pounds, and your back is bent and hurts like hell if you try to stand up, and your eyes are on the ground, and you sleep with that bag, and carry it to bed, and you never put it down. not once - but no one can tell and you can smile at people, then you're depressed. If you try to protect yourself from anyone who tries to add weight to the bag, but can't always do it, then you're depressed..
To this day, even with my meds, I hate carrying grocery bags, and will not argue serious heavy topics with anyone. I will not read heavy books or watch heavy movies. I've carried too much weight, and no more
So, Don, if you really have struggled with depression and have had help, keep it up. As you've noticed, age seems to reduce the unfair demands, and I'm 66.If you've let it slide, don't.
I had no intention of saying any of this. I was going to write my few sentences and go read. It was seeing that one word and your incompletestatement about it that made me have to speak. I'm pretty frank about my depression because I refuse to be emabrrassed about it - like cramps when I was youg: I'm the one with the pain and I will not allow myself to be shamed by it as well.
It's scary and it's painful and it's dangerous, and it' s not the same thing as unhappiness or sadness.

I typed out a whole message - carefully and methodically - but a number of things happened - and all I have left is a bit of a memory.
So I was thinking that Sonia Sotomaypr is going to make some must-see TV this summer. It is time to continue the "race conversation" that Obama began in Philly. As difficult as that may be.
And in the backdrop we have a landmark Supreme Court decision on affirmative action which the Justice herself was involved in...
But alas I hope that 2 stengths of America are front and center: Diversity and Equality.
I can't recreate what was there - but that is probably for the best...

renee, thanks for sharing the vision. so much good could come of revitalizing abandoned neighborhoods. a new homestead act, instead of giving away federal lands, would give away our now federally "owned" foreclosed homes which are going to waste and creating problems for communities in their desolation. one purpose of the old act was to stabilize a new country, surely it needs stabilizing again in these desperate times for homeless families.

Patsi, that's not news to me or many people working in health care. There are a few places where we could save money in a hurry. One is to try and teach people how to properly utilize the current system.
I try to do that everyday because I work with people who are the biggest abusers. They love to use the ER for all their little aches, pains, etc. I tell them the ER motto is "treat them and street them". ER's don't care about your chronic illnesses, they aren't supposed to.
Another is to start using more of the old tried and true medications, the ones that have been around for a long time and have a record for working and not killing people. When your practitioner goes to the drug closet, beware. Make the practitioner write a book on why their patient needs the high dollar stuff. That won't happen.
Hope nobody knows who I am or I may be out of a job.
I think those two things can save a bundle.

You know, I have been to the ER only a few times in my life -- and almost all of those involved broken bones. (Two for me and two for my son in his football playing days.) And although all but one of thise times I had insurance, that one time I had to pay cash. So who is using the ER for free? They sure as hell are able to track me down for the money.
I see much abuse in tests. I cannot tell you how many tests my family and friends seem to have! Jesus! Thousands and thousands of dollars worth. And most of those people are either on Medicare or disability....

People with no money don't pay the ER. I once had a lady come in and her complaint was she had worms. I told her we didn't really treat worms(couldn't do the tests and get them back in time) She needed to go to her family Doc or to the Public Health Unit.
She said if she went to a family Doc she would have to pay. I told her just walking into ER cost hundreds of dollars. Truth is she never intended on paying in the first place but her worms didn't get treated either. I guess she could use them to catch dinner. Sorry.

I know there must be an "old wives tales" place on the web somewhere. Never went hunting for one because of having a grandmother who managed to get nine children to adulthood without a doctor and an aunt you would have loved who was a no nonsense RN.
Still I think people today who are used to heading to the doctor for every little thing could use some solid practical every day advice. Maybe you could teach a high school course.

"Green Promise Seen in Switch to LED Lighting"
"To change the bulbs in the 60-foot-high ceiling lights of Buckingham Palace’s grand stairwell, workers had to erect scaffolding and cover precious portraits of royal forebears.
LED streetlights in Ann Arbor, Mich., are expected to cut maintenance and electricity costs.
So when a lighting designer two years ago proposed installing light emitting diodes or LEDs, an emerging lighting technology, the royal family readily assented. The new lights, the designer said, would last more than 22 years and enormously reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions — a big plus for Prince Charles, an ardent environmentalist. Since then, the palace has installed the lighting in chandeliers and on the exterior, where illuminating the entire facade uses less electricity than running an electric teakettle."

I've been known to put a bottle of white vinegar in with baby shower gifts. If you have children, you will need it.
The trick is knowing when you need help. I just follow the "crisis or chronic" rule. Sudden, severe event: Use First aid and head for nearest medical help.
Anything that doesn't start to abate or go away after a week should be checked by medical personnel. Other than that, you can handle it at home.

Jamie --
What is that white vinegar with the shower gift for? Would that be for the same purpose I bring out the large bottle of hydrogen peroxide?

Look what I found while checking on all the uses for white vinegar:
Keep rabbits from eating your plants. Put cotton balls soaked in white distilled vinegar in a 35mm film container. Poke a hole in the top and place in the garden.

Jamie -- I remember buying some "diet" peaches...packed in water....cost about twice what packed in syrup cost. My mom started laughing and said they sold water packed fruit in the '30s for poor folks. VERY cheap.

Ivy,
Hydrogen Peroxide is good to have, but white vinegar is like magic in a bottle.
Relieves pain of stings and bug bites
diluted in a spray bottle cools and helps heal sunburns
(carry in a spray bottle in cooler for outings)
antiseptic for cuts and scratches
Safe antiseptic wipe down for kitchen counters
Helps prevent fungus - eliminates foot odor
Natural tooth whitener and eliminates bad breath
Good skin toner in place of commercial products that might cause rash.
Helps draw out blood for smashed fingers (cars, folding chairs etc.) - You should probably still see a doctor but the swelling and bruising will be less.
The household uses go on forever.

Hey Jamie
This is the pool enclosure shortly after construction.I have a screen enclosure as the temps here are moderate.I think you might be looking for a version done in Plexiglas to keep out the cold?

I don't know if others agree, but I think that the 5% sevens is quite safe and is fine around your pets (you can even put it on their fur, which I don't do). It takes a little longer to work, but lasts a long time. Can be a little unsightly unless you hide behind something though.

Tony, One thing I remember about Florida is seeing a lot of those really attractive pool enclosures when we were there a couple of times. You couldn't use glass, could you Tony?..... as it would create even more heat. (?)

"Been thinking about the intolerance topic earlier. Isn't intolerance really about power? My group, that I control, against your group, that I don't control? So you get people to follow you by creating a group identity and talking about that other group of less worthy people that are causing all the trouble. In extreme cases you blame them for all of your problems and try to kill them off." http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/trailmix/2009/05/identity-politics-needs-more-i.html#comment-231689
I think you hit it on the head in that paragraph Don. It's as if one group feels 'threatened' by the opposing ideas of the other group. It seems to become 'right vs wrong', in their beliefs (which are merely opinions, but they forget that).

Jamie, I think that vinegar cotton balls in a tube idea is a real find. It would something cheap to try, anyway. Now all I have to do is get a film tube (which I don't use anymore).

Tony,
Thank you. Yes it would have to be plexiglass with a way to heat and cool the enclosure. I found some "orangeries" that are now used as pool enclosures in cold climates, but I wanted to see how yours was attached as it looked like it required less construction.

I have seen Plexiglas used but only where the whole front opens up as sliding doors.I have a 6ft white vinyl fence around the enclosure now also.It is also at the back of the house so it can't be seen from the street..In my sub-division there are many that also encase a hot tub area and outdoor fire pit and an outdoor living are.If landscaped nicely they really look good...I have created for myself a total outdoor living area with pool, hotub, cooking grill,37LCD TV,IPOD compatible stereo along with all my plants and flowers...I got the idea from one of those HGTV shows and I wouldn't quit till I totally spoiled myself..

Thank Bethy. I've tried medications but they loose their effectiveness pretty quickly. Tried cymbalta and quit cold turkey three months later with no side effects. I kind of box it up and set it aside when it happens. Ignore the feelings of doom. It's still there but I move on.
What seems to work for me best is l-tryptophan at night and kava if it gets bad during the day. I don't seem to build up an immunity since it's a natural part of the serotonin cycle.
I talk about it because it's one of those unmentionables to many people. Men start having trouble with it in later years when testosterone levels drop, but they won't admit it unless you water board them. I've had people tell me I just need to go out for a walk to cure it. I refuse to be a victim but I do things to prevent it. But it's silly to try and ignore it and not talk to a professional about it, whether situational or chronic.
Thank for caring.

Carol, I wish doctors had to publicly post their prices. I will call and ask when I'm looking for a doctor, but I'm a cash customer. I'll push back when they want a series of tests too, that seems to be a favorite way to boost costs.

What Newt, Rush, or Stewart Taylor have said about Sotomayor, pales in comparison to what the Liberal fringe have said about Clarence Thomas and Miguel Estrada. Men who were just as poor or poorer than Sotomayor, accomplished just as much as Sotomayor, but they weren't Liberal, so the spineless Liberals in Congress and in the newsmedia took them to task at every opportunity. Sotomayor decisions will be overturned by SCOTUS, her words and her writing will come back to haunt her once they become fully vetted. Her judicial record has just been skimmed, much more will be revealed about touchy feely Judge. Touchy feely BS personal life like opinions have no place within the judicial system. This is how rapist, murders, pedophiles get placed on probation, placed on house arrest, or have their sentences dropped. Then they end back on the street committing the same crimes over and over again. BTW call it what you will, but reverse racism is still racism. Try putting a pretty face on that!

Chloe,
I live in Southern Baptist land and watch their organization. They have the secret password and special handshakes, their own fitness center and do each other business favors. They band and have political power. But ask them any theological questions and you get a blank stare. All they know are the code words they're told to memorize. Like Romans Road.
It's easy to organize and drive a homogeneous group, much harder to do that with a heterogeneous group.
A threatening mutual enemy helps a lot too. Like gays, muslims, jews, blacks, liberals, or what ever you can find.

As usual don't let facts interfere with your prejudices. She has ruled on several hundred cases. Fewer than a dozen have been appealed and less than half of those have been reversed, often on a split decision. The judges who share the bench with her both left and right call her a wise and moderate jurist.
Her record in law makes Thomas look as if he barely got out of kindergarten.

"a sweet little innocent girl was dragged from party,,to,,party,,,"
ha, Solar...that sweet innocent little girl was one of Capitol Records' best A&R (artists & repertoire) managers through the '90s. She could work with any musician and not be star struck.
Only the serious hillbilly blues aficionados will get this one. But an old time song plugger once played her some Tony Joe White songs...when he started to explain who Tony Joe was, she said, "I know exactly who he is." The guy said he was stunned because most of the younger A&R people had no idea. She said, "Uh, do you know whose kid I am?"

Patsi..thanks for the link to the New Yorker article on McAllen, TX/medical mess ahead.
"To make matters worse, Fisher found that patients in high-cost areas were actually less likely to receive low-cost preventive services, such as flu and pneumonia vaccines, faced longer waits at doctor and emergency-room visits, and were less likely to have a primary-care physician. They got more of the stuff that cost more, but not more of what they needed."
