  1. Dang it Chloe,,,,,,I was gone,,,and had to come back to sneak a peek,,like u say,,,,and now I find myself Numero Uno,,,with nothing to say,,,,,,so my first act of being # 1,,,is to say,,,,Carramba,,,

Craig,,,as usual,.,,nice flick,,,,,,Cheney,,,,as much as I can't stand the man,,,,keep him out there ,,,on all of the shows,,,and being the M, D, weekend,,,,what the dems need,,,is the bulldogs to come and tell us how,,he never did any time in the Military,,,and how he dodged it,,,,,,,Cheney is the gift that keeps on giving,,imo

Pelosi,,,,,,,,I thought she was tougher than she has been,,,haven't seen too much of it,,,,she needs to go after the Republicans,,just as fierce as they are comming after her no??,,,what would Newt have done? I think that he would have been fighting back,,,and enjoying it,,,,while every one else (this is what the Dems lack) would take up talking points ,,,and sticking with them.

  2. I put up my Memorial Day blog early and in consideration of our previously discussed "poetry time" it includes a great poem by Jake Thackray about the type of send off I want some day

  4. Jamie,,,,I really like that poem,,,last will and testament by J. Thackray ,,,sort of say's it all for me,,,

"Let best beef be eaten, fill every empty glass,
Let no breast be beaten, let no tooth be gnashed.
Don't bother with a fancy tombstone or a big-deal angel or a little copper flower pot:
    Grow a dog-rose in my eyes or a pussy-willow
But no forget-me-nots, no epitaphs, no keepsakes; you can let my memory slip.
You can say a prayer or two for me soul then, but - make it quick."

If all is ready,,,and there is no quality to life,,,,I would rather go back and join all of the other passing stars,,that shone a little lite,,,join the rest of the universe,,and come back another day,,,another time,,,maybe on our new,,,Planet that we will inhabit,,,,,I like the Life after Humans Series,,,,,but I believe Mother Earth will be vacant in part cos of ,,,we have found some where else for evolution to take part or ( major part),,,going to be a lot of green eyed ladies,,hey thats a song no?

    Solar --

Thank you for that heads up on Roger Tory P. He had or has no peer in the birding world; his loss is still felt keenly.

Mournful in my bird world today. Made a sad discovery last evening, found a little wren crumpled and dead on the garage floor. Had seen her flying in and out a few days ago. Silently prayed she would pick another nest site, if that's what she was seeking. Wrens are such inquisitive little creatures.

For several days, I checked thoroughly each time before closing the door for the night. Maybe when I didn't hear her anymore, I figured she had found her way out? Maybe I forgot about her? Maybe hubs shut the door one night and didn't know to look? I only know my heart sank when I discovered her little body.

I've been asking myself did I do enough? How could I have prevented it?

    A Minor Bird

I have wished a bird would fly away,
    And not sing by my house all day;

Have clapped my hands at him from the door
When it seemed as if I could bear no more.

The fault must partly have been in me.
The bird was not to blame for his key.

And of course there must be something wrong
In wanting to silence any song.

    Robert Frost

  8. Solar,

Jake Thackray was a British singer and poet. There is a great deal of his material on You Tube, but the accent makes some of it difficult when sung which is a shame since he could be so comically obscene when he wasn't being wise and witty. He has a dedicated web page where some of the lyrics live on:

One of the "scandalous" ones: Isabel Makes Love Upon National Monuments

  10. Ivy,,,welcome,,,,,,but don't take it so personal,,,,,it is sad,,,,but there are so many ways that a little bird---wren,,,I don't know ,my birds (differences,,,but maybe I will pick up a book at the library,,and start,,,,I get so many diff 1's in my yard,,,) but I do pick up a little body every now and then,,,and put it in little bag,,,and bury it,,,,,,,,had one a cpl of weeks ago that was in my fenced in garden,,,,,,it could not fly away from me,,,it sorta limped from one corner to the other,,,I decided that in the fenced in garden,,that it was safe,,,,,,we do get a very large black cat ,,that comes into our yard from time to time,at night,,,,,for the next two days,,,I gave it some bread,,,,12 grain Ha!,,,,he wasn't there the third day,,,,and I saw no signs of a struggle,,,,I was just starting to get attached to her,,,,,and was going to name her Sue,,,,,thats my only bird story that I can tell.

Made breakfast,,,,,,and got Judy off to a multiple choir practice,(diff choir's,,from diff churches, some big thing coming up for the city ,,),,,did my chores,,,cut the grass,,,it's a beautiful day here,Im going to see how I can get myself in trouble, and maybe go over to the park,,,to see if I can sneak in on a basketball game or two,,with the teenagers there,,,If not go and hit a cpl of bucket of golf balls,,,

    Jamie,

,thanks,,,booked that,,,,,between,,you,,Pat, and Ivy,,,,Chlo,,,Renee,,Sturg,,,and all of the others,,,Im starting to pay attention to poetry,,,,I have to read it all a cpl of times ,,to get it,,,but if it catches my interest,,,(thats the trouble,,,,there is nothing that does not catch my interest,,and I don't have the time for it all, most of the times),,I will think about it meanings...thanks

Already starting to remember some of my buddies that did not come back,,,so Im going to get out of here,,,,,,later!

Ha, Solar...you were already attached (^_~). The first job God gave Adam in the Garden was to name all the animals. The act of naming something is a bonding process - something only humans can do. lol

  15. Hello everyone. I've actually been around, but busy with moving and organizing stuff, my job stress is high, and the situation with my niece can now be referred to as "nieces". I do not have any clear explanation for this, but my niece Anna, who has non-hogkins lymphoma is now joined by her 23 year old sister with the EXACT SAME DIAGNOSIS ! Talked to my sister on the phone, she was crying, and my Mom cries at the smallest thing so that didn't surprise me. We are all pretty much in shock!

I watched part of Cheney's "address" the other evening and I got the feeling that he was not at all well. Mind you, I dislike the man totally, but the heavy breathing and the pasty skin suggests to me someone not doing so well.

My friend Mauro mentioned something that made sense regarding the Mexican Flu or Swine Flu. He believes that in Europe it will not be as disastrous here than in USA. Reason? Because almost all of us here have exceptional health care coverage. In the states many people cannot always go lickity split to the doctor because they are not insured. I agree, but also, the sick leave policies in the US also makes people hesitant to take what little sick leave they have.

Craig, really dug your appearance on Today! GOOD STUFF! I think between Cheney and Limbaugh, the GOP will continue to be swimming in the toilet of political dinosaurs! I think Pelosi is a problem though.

Oh yeah, Belgium has offered to take in some Guantanamo prisoners here. I have to be honest... I wish they wouldn't...

    That's it...

    Cheers all.

  19. This out from MSNBC ...

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on tonight's "Countdown" pledged to donate $10,000 to charity after disc jockey Erich "Mancow" Muller was waterboarded today on live radio, in an attempt to prove the technique was "not torture." After six seconds Muller said it was "absolutely torture" and that were he to be interrogated by the use of waterboarding he would "confess to anything." Olbermann promised to donate $10,000 to the charity Veterans of Valor, founded by Sgt. Klay South, who administered the waterboarding to Muller today, and withdrew his offer to Sean Hannity to make a donation to the charity of his choice if he followed through on his offer to undergo waterboarding.

If you haven't seen the Mancow waterboarding, you can see the full video here. It's powerful on a number of different levels.

  24. Lawrence Wilkerson tells CNN's Rick Sanchez just who he thinks was running the show in the Bush administration, why the Cheney family is out in full force defending torture and suggests that a number of members of the Bush administration should avoid travelling.

Sanchez: You know the idea...I was struck by that because I heard the term "lawyer up" and I was trying to figure out what she meant, because it seems there's an implication with the quote lawyer up implying that these suspects shouldn't be allowed any kind of representation. And it makes me as an American then wonder, given the legal system that I know that we have in this country, if they don't have lawyers and there aren't any courts, then who decides that they're guilty or innocent? Did anybody ever ask that question?

Wilkerson: This is absolutely Orwellian. His speech yesterday was Orwellian too and George Orwell when he was with the BBC talked about this a lot--when lying drives out truth telling. And Mark Twain of course said a lie will make it around the world before the truth can pull its socks up. That's what they're involved in. That's what Karl Rove taught them. That's what they've been involved in for some time. And her bona fides scream at me that what in the world is America's media doing listening to this woman? This woman has absolutely no bona fides to talk about this.

Sanchez: She has made eleven appearances in nine days, so she certainly has been getting...um...a lot of us....

Wilkerson: They're scared. I think they're frightened. And I don't blame them for being frightened.

Sanchez: Why? Why would Dick Cheney be frightened?

Wilkerson: Well we've got the possibility, I realize the political will doesn't exist, but we've got the possibility of domestic problems for him, and we've certainly got the possibility of international problems. Judge Baltasar Garzon in Spain has started a case and if I were Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Jim Haynes and a host of other lawyers in the administration, I wouldn't travel. I wouldn't travel anywhere.

  28. I believe Dick Cheney's conduct is reprehensible. His motives are not enhancing national security, but rather they are to gain political advantage should there ever be another terrorist attack on the United States.

If he truly believed what he was saying, and if he were motivated by keeping the U.S. safe, he would be working feverishly, but quietly behind the scenes to try to advance his viewpoint within the current national security apparatus. By making his case so loudly and publicly, he knows that he will be ineffective at influencing Obama administration behavior.

Instead he is positioning himself to gain politically when and if a terrorist strike the United States again. He is betting against the interests of the United States for his own political gain.

And, to remind -- the worst terrorist attack on the United States to date occurred on his watch.

Tom, that is terribly devastating news, and my heart goes out more than I can adequately say, except that I have sadly learned that lightning can strike twice.

On a more optimistic note, a good friend is entering her third year of remission from lymphoma. She is young, healthy, and strong, plus all her hair returned beautifully. She will tell anyone, attitude is everything.

    Hugs for ((((Tom's Nieces))))

  30. Two of out daughters came to the house this morning. Ostensibly to put wood preservative on our mailbox post and that of the disabled vet up the street. But, I knew they were really here for some of Stinky's home cooking.

In any case, when they arrived I was in the midst of mixing nectar for our new hummingbird feeder which was to be suspended above the wildflower garden under the cherry tree out front.

Squeaky took over that job while I found the preservative and brushes, etc., for Toots. Within minutes, both girls were painting the posts.

After everything was done, Squeaky told me that there are two blue robin's eggs in a nest in the cherry tree. I processed that information asking her if the feeder was so close to the nest that the robins would abandon. She said no, she didn't think so.

It wasn't until a while later that the thought occurred to me as to how she knew that there are two blue eggs. So, I asked her. She told me she climbed the tree and took a look. Good work for a 'girl' 4-foot 10-inches tall and 47-years old.

    I didn't work hard. But, I took a nap anyhow. :)

  31. Pat and C-bob, clap, clap, clap, for your original poetry today.

C, I want you to know I have spent considerable amount of time and energy on your corn project even though I have nothing to show for it. Will send a blog comment later.

First it was fixing the tiller, then preparing and planting, then fighting critters and I just finished a scavenger hunt for the materials to make my protective enclosure to protect my next planting. I'm whopped.

I found the chicken wire easy but I needed those little hog clamps to connect my creation. I was at a huge retail lumber store and they didn't know what I was talking about. I finally found a woman who did but she couldn't find what I needed.

Then I had to find a feed store. Drive all over town. They didn't have what I needed. Then I went to Tractor Supply. The guy I asked didn't have a clue what I wanted so I found a woman. She did, and finally I got what I needed. Plan to start working on my enclosure when I catch my wind.

So Cajun, you never got to live in La.? That's both good and bad. We rank pretty much at the bottom of the list for just about everything except food, scenery and hospitality. IMO we are pretty high on the list for those three.

  41. I know your sadness also Ivy. I didn't want to mention last week the little Prothonary warbler I may have lead to it's death while weedeating.

I found the little egg in a hole in one of the pipe supports under my camp. I watched mom work sitting on then raising that child. Noticed she was bringing bugs to something so I figured it had hatched.

When I was pushing my weedwacker something flew out of the grass. It was a baby bird and it jumped down below this new little boat ramp I had recently built. Don't know what the outcome was but I hope it was OK. I didn't want to mention it because I was trying to maitain my denial. You had to bring up your little bird.

  62. Memorial Day

    The guns are silent now.
    Though they haven’t been for long;
    Nor will they remain so.

    The armies will collect
    and bury their dead
will bind the wounds of those
    not ready to be buried.

(The navies will have less to do
The indifferent sea takes care of its own.)

    Birds, flies, crabs
    will feast.
    They’re not to blame
God did know what he was doing
    when he created the flies

He knew the nature of man.
And that nature is to stand and fight
for home or family, for country--
    Or for god.

Strange how god can be so clearly
    On both sides.

    Blood from foes
    Will enrichen the earth
Even the trees that have been striped
of their leaves by artillery will be reborn.

But new lines will be drawn on maps
And young men – now women too
(And not just those who are mere victims)
Will heed the call to defend the homeland
    And slay the infidel.

    http://buchanan.org/blog/pjb-did-bibi-box-obama-in-1547

    Did Bibi Box Obama In?

On Sept. 20, 2002, as the War Party was beating the drum for preventive war on Iraq, lest we wake up to “a mushroom cloud over an American city,” The Wall Street Journal introduced an eminent voice to confirm that, yes, Saddam was driving straight for an atomic bomb.

“This is a dictator who is … feverishly trying to acquire nuclear weapons,” wrote Bibi Netanyahu, former prime minister of Israel.

Target: Tehran. And Obama may just have boxed himself in.

In return for Bibi’s willingness to talk to the Palestinians, Obama agreed to a December deadline for progress in talks with Iran. If the talks are not fruitful by then, America will step on the escalator.

“I’ve been very clear that I don’t take any options off the table with respect to Iran,” said the president.

Bibi got what he came for.

By setting a six-month deadline, Obama has given an incentive to Israel, AIPAC, the neocons and even al-Qaida, which wants Shia Iran bombed back to the stone age, to provoke collisions with Iran, until December, then demand that Obama keep his word, suspend talks, impose severe sanctions and start us on the escalator to

Obama is not going to get our troops home,,,he is going to take more of them away ,,to fight in more wars,,,the depression should give him a lot of voulanteers to die for what,,,,

Meanwhile we give 1/3 of our total forign cash to Israel,,,,and what is that war for?? Land and the water that runs thru that river,,I forgot it's name,,,but we will be spread out pretty thin,,,and will slide back ,,,in the economy,,,one step forward,,,,five steps back,,,it this all planned,,,or does one party take the lead from the other,,,and continue down the same road,,,,,Hillary Clinton,,,is starting to worry me,,,I never thought I would say that,,,she is calling for Iran to give up its nuclear weapons,,,,,what weapons,,,there arn't any,,,is she going to be all for wars,,,without proof,,,just like C Powell,,,when he was in the same office??

This is what the Britts,,,threatened to do to the people at the Island,,,that is now a military base,,,,Diego Garcia,,,,they did it for Cheney/Bush,,,,told them that they would be starved out of there,,,and killed,,,dogs,,,goats,,any cows that they had,,,the people left,,,and we now own one of more than 750 military bases,,,most probably needed for our protection,,and interest,,,I guess,,,,when the Israels take Palestine for themselves,,,we will be blamed for it,,,and we will see a lot more terrorism ..Nope Obama will not bring the troops home.,,,now all of the Congress,,and Senate critters sons,,,and daughters should go into the war areas,,,,then we might see a slow down of wars,,

    Up next, http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,626412,00.html

Obama goes to Egypt with some pretty harsh stuff in his daily briefing regardong Iran, Hamas and Hizb'Allah. He is also aware that numerous bloggers on both near sides of center are pointing out the disconnectedness of Obama's sales pitches from the substance of policy. Those who can't fathom the shifts from Obama neither noticed this behavior during the primary or the landmines ahead.

Enjoy the weekend holiday and thanks to all who rose in the defense of Liberal Democracy and rescued the world from tyranny. We have a bit further to roll.

LOL Carol, There you go making me laugh again.
If it works for our horses, it should work for the beavers (I think?). Just wrap it a couple or three times around. There's also a type of brush on tar (at least it looks like tar) that is to stop the tree from being damaged from the loss of bark. They have it at TSC, where you got your stuff for the fence. What I read about these deterrents, is that they move on to another tree, if they can't use that one anymore.

  99. You know I have been at the job I have now for over 4 years and haven't had a week of vacation. I get 20 days a year but I can't take a week off because there is no one to take my place.

I was in the hospital twice last year with my three compression fractures/surgeries and I was out for a week each time but was on call the entire time.

I actually work for the local charity hospital and am considered a satilitte clinic at the jail. They just don't have anyone who can relieve me and we just can't close down for a week like the clinics do at the hospital. No one would really blame me if I just left and said hell with it but I just can't do that. Who would take care of my peps?

I take my time as an extra one or two days attached to a weekend. I think God gave me this camp so that I am on vacation as soon as I get off work each day. It was sort of a thank you for my sacrifice.

  100. Chloe,,,taking a look before shutting down,,,,and saw that you were here,,,have any plans for the M weekend

Carol,,,yes they have it in diff size gauges,,,,but it is all wire mesh,,,don't get stuck with the name chicken wire,,,if they say that ,,that is the only size that they have,,,,,but the thicker ,,,the wire,,,the harder it will be to cut and shape it,,,,there is a wire mesh that they use for concrete,,,if they can cut you out a piece,,,,that would be strong enough to keep the beavers from doing any more damage,,,it is about 4-5 times thicker than the one that you have,,,I think?

Posted by: SolarCrete Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 10:40 PM

  102. "It was sort of a thank you for my sacrifice"

That's a nice way to look at it Carol. And gratitude is a very healthy emotion - I'm not sure it's actually an emotion, but it feels like one. The way I see it, you got it because you deserve it. That, and because 'you' made it happen. Like you said you visualized it. That's the same way I ended up where I am, no doubt. I saw these trees, this forest, the space and the privacy, the freedom, long before we actually got here. We came half way across the U.S., but we got here eventually... but not without visualization.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 10:45 PM

  103. Carol, I feel the gratitude, but I don't think I got what I want because I deserve it. I think we get what we expect to get, or at least if we can hold hope long enough, until it turns to belief.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 10:47 PM

  110. It is those little half circle thingys that you put in this cheap looking little pair of plyers with little grooves in them. They clamp two pieces of the chicken wire together. When I had my crawfish pond and made crawfish traps I used them.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 10:59 PM

    Carol --

Did you ever share with us where you and Maggie were during Katrina or any of the other big storms? (If that's too inquisitive of me, forget I asked.)

There is all thicknesses of wire you could use, but I don't know if there is any made specifically for such toothy varmints as beaver. You'll have to see what happens with your set-up. Just because your corn fails to thrive, does not automatically mean you have not produced valuable data for C-Bob's project. Thomas Edison supposedly invented thousands of ways not to make a light bulb. He rejected the concept of "failure."

Before I came up with my current "cat proofing cage" consisting of a thick wire mesh for the bird box, I was so peeved at the neighbor cat who repeatedly destroyed my baby blue birds that I wanted to string the post with razor wire. Hubs' more rational temperament prevailed and I was stopped in time. This year all nesting birds were kept safe with a simpler method, and no cats were tortured.

  113. It's where we live, not a get away like yours. And no river.
But it's a little more than an hour northwest of Houston, before you get to the national forest. So we're close to everything, including work. It's getting more crowded up our way by the minute though. But that's ok, it doesn't affect us except a lot more traffic when we get out and about.

I am beat. Time to pick up a book, and read myself to sleep.
    See you all tomorrow.

  114. Yes Carol,,,thats the way to go,,,and I bet they are a 14 gauge,,,go with the one that you have worked with,,and has worked out for u,,,,, the clamps are called something diff here,,,they are called wire ties,,,but should be the same,,,and see if you can get that neighbor to help stretch the wire,,if you think that it is too heavy for you.

  116. You are not that far from me Chloe.

Ivy, Maggie and I had to stay at the prison during Rita. It was no picnic. No AC, no fan, not even a breeze. We were trapped in the sweaty bowels of a concrete and steel building. Temp was soaring outside and with menopause and hyperthyroidism, I tied the Magster to my leg at night, slept on a new prison mat and cried myself to sleep each night.

8 miserable days/nights before I could get out. There was a 10 ft surge that came up the river but when it went down and they cleared all the trees off the camp road I came out here to set up camp.

I had gone for a generator, heavy gauge power cords and a chain saw when we went for first aid supplies. I was one of the few medical personal in town. The law enforcement that came in to help set up shop at the jail.

I closed off everything to my little kitchen/dining area to live in. I had a little TV, a light, and a little AC. It was heaven compared to the jail. I cooked on the BBQ pit and a propane stove.

Each day I went to those help lines with thier goodies to give away. It was the only entertainment in town. Couldn't wait to see what kind of surprises I was getting for the day along with ice and water.

Long gas lines to get gas for the generator. The town was evacuated so I felt pretty much all alone out here. The place stunk of dead fish. Dead fish everywhere. Destruction everywhere. It looked the result of a war.

It was a very long 23 days with no electricity. I have a real appreciation for electricity now.

  120. The prison has since purchased three huge generators. One for each building.

Ivy, remember we didn't get Katrina. We got Rita. It was a stronger hurricane than Katrina but didn't get the news coverage that Katrina did. It hit us on the worst side of the storm.

It was the broken levies/ floods that killed NO, not the hurricane. They thought initially that they missed the bullet until the levies broke.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 11:36 PM

  121. I sat in my comfortable living room, crying while I watched the hell of Katrina. A few weeks later I was living the hell.

Posted by: ct Author Profile Page | May 23, 2009 11:39 PM

  122. We had evacuated all our inmates two days before the storm. Had 1300 inmates out within 24 hours. They did a lot of arresting after the storm.

We were mainly here for those helping out. My entire hospital, except me, hit the road. Most of the hospitals evacuated. There was a triage at the Civic Center.

When we went out for supplies there were no vehicles on the road but there were National Guard with big guns at every intersection. It was an eerie site. Like a really bad dream.

Hope I don't have to repeat it. Every time now that there is a mention of a storm in the Gulf, I get PTSD, we all do. Tony and anyone else in hurricane country can relate to this story.

Where were you Chloe with the last year storms. Even though they didn't get us, the storm surge was worse than it was with Rita. It came up 11.3 ft.in the river. Only a centimeter from coming in the lower part of owl camp.

  123. Solar -I hope you saw my post thanking all you vets for your sacrificies and years. It always leaves me speehless (almost) to bring to mind the selflessness of people who jump to business when trouble raises its various heads. I am in awe of you and Flatus and all the others here who did that for us.

I watched a history channel show of dogfights during WWII in Leyte Gulf as MacArthur was trying to keep the
Philippines safe. A small fleet was mistaken by the Japanese for our main fleet under Bull Halsey. They interviewed some of the sailors and pilots - the matter-of-fact way they told their stories....well, they were regular people doing very un-regular things; made me gulp.

Carol - your work schedule is worrisome to me. You should take better care of yourself! You're doing wonderful work, but you can still do it at less cost to you. Can't you make a deal with some other medical people to trade off?

  125. Oh, the roof over where I am sitting now was in the front yard but this room was already a mess when I bought the camp. I didn't finish it until a year later.

Looking from my view from the couch now, that hurricane is only a distant bad dream. Maybe it never really happened.

    Carol --

In a way, you have hit the nail on what irritates me about Cheney's condescending attitude that his style of governing is all that can "keep us safe." What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Putting bubble-wrap around us and "protecting" us from facing crises and overcoming them makes us weak, not strong. It is enfeebling, not strengthening.

I probably haven't said that with much clarity because it's late, and I may have clearer thoughts and better words by tomorrow. Time to say nite-nite...

    Don1 --

It's probably just as well to use up the old supply and replenish. I thought "expiration dates" on bottled water was silly, how could water go bad? Then I learned it's not the water that deteriorates, it's the bottles. Ever notice how squishy they get after being stored a year or more. They can even spring leaks and are probably leaching toxins into the water. Lucky it was the cat drinking, not your mom (heehee, I don't bear a grudge against cats for eating my bluebirds.)

Now I really have to go, even hubs is heading to the barn...

  150. shirley mcclain on being menefreghista and the end of the rat pack.

Dean didn’t move. He never liked being ordered around. He fell silent. That made Frank mad. He picked up Dean’s plate of sphagetti and dumped it on his head. Dean did a Buster Keaton and sat stone still. That made Frank laugh. Frank thought Dean was being funny, but he wasn’t. Dean was making up his mind to walk...again.

There were 3 shows in a row in Chicago, which Dean was willing to complete. But on the last night Mort arranged for a private plane to take Dean back to California, where he checked into a hospital to make it look good. Dean needed some rest anyway.

Dean and Frank had just come to the end of their road, just as Dean and Jerry had. Frank called to enquire how Dean was doing, but Dean never took the calls.

Dean left our entertainment industry in much the same way as he had come in: quiet, stoic, resolved to be left alone, essentially uninvolved with the passions of life and work. He was a menefreghista, the definition of which is one who simply didn’t give a f..., and because of that the was happy now. I miss him more than I can say.

Frank couldn’t bear to observe Dean’s deterioration. But the more he pursued Dean, the more Dean retreated. Frank went in the opposite direction. He knew in his heart that If he let go for a moment he’d die. He still needed to be appreciated, adored, and acknowledged.

Despite Barack Obama’s pledges as a candidate and president, there is no discernible movement on repealing the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy or the Defense of Marriage Act. Both seem more cruelly discriminatory by the day.

When yet another Arabic translator was thrown out of the Army this month for being gay, Jon Stewart nailed the self-destructive Catch-22 of “don’t ask”: We allow interrogators to waterboard detainees and then banish a soldier who can tell us what that detainee is saying."

Had a journalist taken the photos, there would have been prizes. Instead, the photographs were used by the administration and the military to frame the soldiers who took and appeared in them as rogues acting out of their own individual perversity. In this way, the exposé became the cover-up: the soldiers who revealed our corruption to us were made scapegoats and thrown in prison."

    Carol,

My guess is that neither of them is an "extreme" anything. He is your basic Huey Long style Louisiana populist/progressive so has some conservative leanings and success and wealth have driven him more to the middle.

As far as I could tell she was never a hard right conservative. There was always a brain behind the facade that made her phrase the talking points without the mean edge as opposed to the empty headed parrots who don't have a clue what they are saying but just read off that morning's memo.

I often don't agree with her, but I think I would like her. At least the conversation wouldn't be dull.

I don't like being negative about our situation & truly wish we had something happening good & honest something to say that has really helped Americans hardest hit ,we can only hope for a change. The only legitimate argument the GOP really has & it is a biggie is the fact all this money has been borrowed & SPENT with almost nothing to show for it. All we have is there word that their actions kept us from going belly up. Individual personal incomes won't be taxed further (so we can buy the products which are taxed further) but EVERYTHING else is going to sky rocket -look there goes gasoline ,cigs, alcohol ,food everything we as Americans consume & I can't wait until heating season. Its hard to believe Obama honestly didn't know that most all of his promises couldn't be kept.. If so then maybe he wasn't as prepared as told.

  257. Carol,
You asked if I have a photo bucket. I opened one to post a picture of Emma with my daughter when she was born. But when you asked about it, first I had to remember my user name, then I took my phone out and ran around the front part of our property and clicked some pictures. The bad part is, they all look pretty much the same, because it's mostly wooded. I tried to get in the height of the trees, but it was rough.

I'm shamefully bad about not taking pictures...never do, and am in serious need of some practice. Which I will work on. I owe it to Emma to take more pictures at least of her.

    Hi Chloe
I have 1 job early then I'm off for the rest of the day.I plan on stopping off at my aunts house because there's some cousins in town for a visit.I had them here earlier and they made me feel good because they liked my house and everything I have done with it...I made 2 dishes for my aunt, my mom's potato salad and my version of coleslaw.I also made a cherries jubilee for desert...What's up with you?I agree with you also you owe it to little Emma to take a lot of photo's of her and of course share them with us...

  270. Chloe I haven't even manicured myself for the day yet. I haven't showered yet and my hair is still sticking up on my head like it was when I got up this morning. I took the day off. I didn't have to go anywhere.

After being out in the heat for a while I look the same anyway so why bother. Whoops I forgot how I look and I was out there talking to my neighbors.

  274. Tony, 'Why wouldn't' your cousins like your house. From what I've seen, it's beautiful. And all that cooking you do. You're too perfect Tony.... I don't know how you do it.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | May 24, 2009 9:31 PM

  275. Well Tony I do have most of the leaves out. It still has a little that I have to vacuum to waste. I vacuum to waste because it still has some mustard algea in it and I don't want that going thru the filter. When I vacuum to waste I can only do so much before I have to stop and fill her up again.

I have treated it twice now with the copper algaecide. It is clearing up. It may take another week to get it there. Then I need to balance the chemicals when I get thru losing the water from vacuuming to waste. Not living at the house makes it more difficult. I do the work while I'm washing my clothes.

Confined to a wheel chair and after three years of therapy only able to say a few words. His family is overjoyed he lived and now he is lauded by a "greatful nation".

Is it horrible of me to say this is a waste and the people who sent him into this war deserve to have the same done to them repeatedly in their families until they learn to stop sending young men to die for their greed and lust for power.

I think you feel like that Jamie, because you know they'll never understand, unless it happens to them. They don't really get it, the sacrifices that are being made.

Carol, I picture that to be more of a mother, daughter relationship. That's how I feel about Emma, that she was sent to me too. So I know just how you feel. And I've felt the same way about many of my pets, some I've lost to old age, some I still have. Animals are every bit as important to me as humans.

  316. Carol,

That is from one of my all time favorite albums, "Homage to Gerald Moore".

Moore was arguably the most famous accompanist of his time. The standing line when he was playing, was his asking the artists. "Am I playing too loud?". Of course he wasn't.

De Los Angeles was one of my favorites as well--did absolutely the best, to my ears, Madama Butterfly. Schwarzkopf was also a magnificient artist.

The album, I have it on vinyl, is a treasure.

They called later and changed their minds at the last minute but that is when I had lifted that generator 4 times and stirred up the two other vertebral compression fractures I didn't know I had or got lifting that generator. 336. Good morning all! I wish for you all a wonderful Memorial Day. We'll have a barbeque this afternoon and of course I'll be calling my dear Da to thank him for saving the world. They really are the greatest generation. We didn't make our deadline with Liberation Status, but it now appears that they liberated a subcamp of Buchenwald so I have faith in Obama's pr gang that they'll pick up on this for his trip to Buchenwald.
We finally got the corn planted last night.. What a relief to finally have it done, just couldn't wait for the next new moon.
I've got one maybe two more weeks of work from morning to night and will then be back in the kitchen and will have more time to check in with you all. Gotta go make a batch of buttercrunch right now, enjoy the day!

Jamie- I'm with you, what a curious couple. Although I think I'd rather have one too many drinks with them than dinner. Too bad about the surgery, hope she stops.

  351. Patsi, you know Maggie is a Heinz 57 give or take 1 or 2. I used to have registered dogs and they were never as healthy and hardy. I did pick breeds, however, that were over bred. They all had skin problems which lead to having to use cortisone, which lead to eye and ear problems. They lived to be around 15 but it was a struggle.

Maggie, age about 5, has had no health problems except that I can't put anything around her neck. She chokes. I have to use a harness.

She is a drama queen. One look at her pic and you can tell that. She will sometimes act like something is wrong and I'll get excited and she was only kiddin. I try to tell her the story about the little boy who cried wolf but it's no use.

  372. Sea, today is for those who didn't make it back and for their families as well. When I was a youngster they called it Decoration Day when families would go and place flowers on the graves of their fallen Civil War family members. Then, there would usually be a parade with a couple of Civil War vets being put on display. It was much more solemn than the commercialized adaptation that we now have.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | May 25, 2009 8:16 AM

  373. Carol, one of things I thought about the other day was when I was at a really small airstrip close to Pleiku. There were a couple of guys resting in their body bags under the wing of a Caribou.

It was clear to me that they had been placed in the wing's shade an hour or two earlier. But, the Sun had moved and the two guys were missing even that small comfort.

I regret not moving them the few feet it would have taken to get them back in the shade. But, I rationalized that they weren't in my outfit, etc.

To this day I regret not having afforded them the courtesy they deserved and that I could have rendered.

  376. I was with the SeaBees, and as buliders we had a more or less regular work week of 6 1/2 days with half a day 'off' on Sunday afternoons. We were in the Civil Action phase of the war, and a bunch of us would go to a nearby orphanage and play with the kids and do odd jobs to fix the place up. It was in a relatively safe area of DaNang, and so most of us left our weapons behind in the truck that brought us -- no need traumatizing the kids more.

That is, except for this one corpsman who insisted on wearing his sidearm as he did the routine vaccinations, dispensing of pills etc. That always struck me a odd that a corpsman, of all people, felt he needed to be armed in the orphanage.

Oh well, it was a strange war.

    CJ,

That brought back a memory. Back in 1989 or 90 while working at a radio station I did a promotional blood drive for the local blood bank. We had ambulances running to offices all over town to pick up people with a sign on the back saying "Follow Me To China Beach". I got them to lay down a ton of sand in the parking lot and erect a big above ground pool. The DJs broadcast live from the blood bank dressed in jungle cammies and the women in the sales staff were in bikinis. The local news helicopters flying up and down 99 and 41 did flyovers every time they turned around. We were fine until the Marines from a town south "invaded" and threw their commander into the water.

The whole promotion broke the one day donation record and made the local news. We had to schedule people for later donations. The cleanup was a mess, and I was told to never ever again "get another bright idea" :-) That didn't stop me even if the DJs didn't like broadcasting from inside a cage at the zoo.

  388. We were having one of our EMBA residency sessions at a resort outside of Tampa. They treated us right. And they hosted an open bar after the day's studies were over.

There was some pharmaceutical company having a regional sales happening at the same resort. For their entertainment they had a MASH-theme party in one of the large bohios outside.

A couple of us got snockered and started getting into the pharma-peoples' faces. Bunch of draft dodgers capitalizing on GI's misery, etc.. That effectively ended their party.

Fortunately, a couple of friends came and extricated us from the mess we had caused. The two marines in my class were the other gate-crashers.

Just remembered the trigger that set me off on that MASH party; they were all wearing dog tags as they headed out the hotel door to their party site. Never saw such a cheerful bunch.

On a smaller scale, they exhibited the same total lack of understanding as did the elite from Washington who carriaged-down to Manassas for a picnic with the entertainment being the First Battle of Bull Run.

    http://www.nps.gov/archive/gwmp/arl_hse.html

It is tied in someway to virtually every founding family in Virginia: Washington, Lee, Custis, Randolph (which ties to Jefferson). You can almost hear the lyrics from 1776

They say that God in heaven is everybody's God
I'll admit that God in heaven is everybody's God

  399. CJ, I had two really nice associations with Seabees. The first was when we shared a troop ship with them in '61. We left Oakland and stoppet at Port Hueneme and picked-up a battalion of them. They were headed to Okinawa. We got off at Pearl. Flew on to Korea from there.

The second time was at Lockbourne AFB in Ohio. We hosted a group of reservists from West Virginia. They were real good to us helping get some things done in our bomb dump that we'd never get funding for. That was in '72.

  401. Made it back from a early breakfast with my buddies,,,we have been together since before high school age,,,,,there were 10 of us that enlisted in the various armed services,,,3 out of the ten did not make it back,,,we did not talk too much about them,,,,one or two comments each,,,,they are in heaven,,,in hell or ,,in limbo,,,,I said that they are back in space,,in the universe,,,back to what they originally was,,,space dust,,,,,and they arn''t gone,,,just traveling around the universe,,,and having a great time,,,my buddy John did not show up,,,him and I enlisted in the Marines,,under the buddy system,,,we were together most of the time,,,this made it a lot easier,,for the both of us,,,Im going to make him feel really guilty,,,I saved his life once,,,not in the military,,,but before we went in,,,,

Another conversation we were having was about Obama,,,some like him,,some don't,,,they know that I am an Indy,,,and wanted to know what I thought about his speech the day ( 22nd) about the detainees,,,and the rule of law,,,,,,,,,I told them that there is starting to be a lot o similarities with the Bush Administration,,,and the need for more and more power,,,,,,,,,I told them to watch a video of Rachel Maddow,,,,a very strong supporter of Obama and here is the one.,,,,Please watch it all the way thru

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uuWVHT1WUY#

And another thing that I told them,,(we were discussing Iran also)
is that,,,,if they knew that in Iran,,,there is by a law, that w hen some one is arrested for terrorism or any thing similar ( also in Australia I think)
has to be charged within 48 hrs,,,and be given a trial date,,,,and that this is followed 99.9% of the time,,,,,we are all going to meet with all of our wives in a cpl of weeks,,,,we give the wives the chance to set the date,,so everyone can make it,,,,,or else we just meet on our own,,,,the gals know that we have done it before,,so there is no stalling about it,,,,it was great seeing them all,,,,when I look at them,,,,I still see the boys that I hung around with,,,and played all of the sports with,,,,not so much soldiers,,,,but we did have a few moments of silence for our friends floating around the universe some where.

  412. Question of the Day

If a government informant gives a would-be jihadist bags and bags of weed to entice him to join his jihad, where does he get the weed?

When they found out it was, they probably headed to the nearest bar. They are good workers when you can get them to work but beer is a priority. They aren't exactly boys, probably in their 40s, river rats.

I got my pontoon boat at the end of the summer last year. Bought it used, for a song. If you live on the river here there are two things you need to have, a golf cart and a pontoon boat. I think it's in the neighborhood covenent.

I took mine out of the water last year just prior to our last hurricane scare and hadn't moved it since until yesterday. It was working but had a little trouble starting at times. I've had several offers already to buy it so if I get tired of it, I'll put it on the market.

  419. Ocean Life Of Ages Past Boggle Modern Imagination With Incredible Sizes, Abundance And Distribution

ScienceDaily (May 25, 2009) — Before oil hunters in the early 1800s harpooned whales by the score, the ocean around New Zealand teemed with about 27,000 southern right whales - roughly 30 times as many as today - according to one of several astonishing reconstructions of ocean life in olden days to be presented at a Census of Marine Life conference May 26-28.
.................... Using such diverse sources as old ship logs, literary texts, tax accounts, newly translated legal documents and even mounted trophies, Census researchers are piecing together images - some flickering, others in high definition - of fish of such sizes, abundance and distribution in ages past that they stagger modern imaginations.

They are also documenting the timelines over which those giant marine life populations declined.

The case centres on a complaint by a woman who says she was pressured into paying large sums of money after being offered a free personality test.

France regards Scientology as a sect, not a religion, and the organisation could be banned if it loses the case.

Pat, make sure you have the cord to hook your camera up to your computer. When you plug it in, it should download onto your windows media player automatically, and be saved automatically. You can go over ahead of time and open up a photo bucket account. It's free and the instructions are very self explanatory. Then when you get to that point, if you need help getting them from your computer onto your photo bucket site, someone here will be sure to help. Much easier than it sounds.

Good Tony, getting a few more pics in there. Keep going.....you have some catching up to do.

I don't know if you remembered I told ya'll about thinking I may have hurt a little Prothonotary warbler last weekend weedwacking. I saw the mamma this morning flying around seeming to be a little distressed. A short time later I found the little baby warbler lying on the steps, dead. Must have flown into the window.

It was already stiff or I would have tried some CPR. I begged the little bird to come back. I gently massaged it. I told mamma W I was so sorry. That little bird didn't have a bit of luck going for it, made it thru a weedwacker just to get done in by a window. It just wasn't meant to be. It started it's life as a W and ended it with a W. (warbler, window)

I thought that maybe it was fitting for Memorial Day. Maybe it could get a message back to those who had served our country and lost their lives in battle that we really appreciated their sacrifice. I sent the message just in case....

I buried the little bird close to a patch of mint.

  478. They May Not Want The Bomb

    And other unexpected truths.

"What you know about Iran,,,,,is all wrong" Fareed Zakaria

Everything you know about Iran is wrong, or at least more complicated than you think. Take the bomb. The regime wants to be a nuclear power but could well be happy with a peaceful civilian program (which could make the challenge it poses more complex). What's the evidence? Well, over the last five years, senior Iranian officials at every level have repeatedly asserted that they do not intend to build nuclear weapons. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has quoted the regime's founding father, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who asserted that such weapons were "un-Islamic." The country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a fatwa in 2004 describing the use of nuclear weapons as immoral. In a subsequent sermon, he declared that "developing, producing or stockpiling nuclear weapons is forbidden under Islam." Last year Khamenei reiterated all these points after meeting with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei. Now, of course, they could all be lying. But it seems odd for a regime that derives its legitimacy from its fidelity to Islam to declare constantly that these weapons are un-Islamic if it intends to develop them. It would be far shrewder to stop reminding people of Khomeini's statements and stop issuing new fatwas against nukes.

    Solar,

The whole theory of "six degrees of separation" is an old one. If we took our little group here, we should be able to connect to every single person on earth. It would be interesting to find out how many countries we could reach just with the names in our mutual address books. I'm sure we've got all the states in the union covered.
