Three months ago I wrote the following and it sill stands: "One cross word from President Barack Obama himself would probably end his party's latest nightmare -- the utterly ridiculous situation of Roland Burris in the United States Senate. It is not that this is Obama's problem. But it becomes his problem if the President tolerates this fool any longer."
Burris is a pathetic embarrassment to his party -- and to his president, whose Senate seat he pretends to hold. His juvenile prevarications denying his obvious attempt at making deals for advancement make "the dog ate my homework" seem positively Shakespearean.
Under intense questioning by MSNBC's Chris Matthews on Wednesday (see video below), Burris ultimately claims -- incredibly -- that he was lying when he told the governor's brother that he would pay for a senate seat.
Isn't that sort of like admitting that you robbed the bank but always planned to return the money. Please!
Won't somebody in power find a way to make this imbecile go away and give the Senate a chance to restore what dignity it has left?

This should be another nail in the coffin of Mr. Burris.
He needs to be expelled from the Senate now!

I wrote this just a ffew minutes ago on the last thread
in order to explain comments I made re Sotomayor, which were misread by several people. But with the new thread I'm re-posting it This is bethyboo, by the way, so if you don't want to read what I've said, and it is long - that down arrow should work.
and Bethy.... from what I understand so far.... Sotomayor has always been prone to go with precedent..... I think that says just the opposite of what you think her call may be on Roe vs Wade.... IMO....
Posted by: RebelliousRenee | May 27, 2009 9:59 AM
I know, Renee, but I'm always a sceptic. All I said was that her opinion that it is constitutional to deny foreign aid to countries who allow abortion bothers me because I see no logic in denying rights we have to those people we are supposed to be helping. The only basis for that argument is church dogma.
It bothers me that if she bases her opinon on dogma, where will that stop? I understand she likes to let established decisions stand - I'm glad. I hope she sticks to that. I hope she is confirmed. I am not worried about Roe.
I simply said that I hope I am not disappointed, which is what I said re Obama. So far, I think I'm one of the few here who has found no fault with him. That's all - I was trying to add my reaction to her nomination to everyone else's.
I was not speculating and I was certainly not accusing
her - I like her and am frankly a little tired of repubs trying to identify her ethnicity, and even what an hispanic is. She's an American woman who is a minority group member and whose first language was probably Spanish -with a few tweaks that should cover it.
I was not speculating - I find that rather boring because there tend to be a finite numberr of possibilities. I was mentioninga fear that I have . I NEVER referred to Roe and wouldn't read it - it's immaterial since I understand all too well that I will have to wait to see if my fears are grounded. I made reference to ONE opinon (not Roe)which she apparently gave...then again I could be wrong and maybe she didn't write that. I have few strong opinions because I think few things have been proven.
One opinion I do hold very strongly is that religion cannot be allowed to set our poilicies. Once that happens, we are no longer America. It's pretty simply said, and I don't think stating my fear qualifies me to be told I'm speculating and shouldn't talk about something I know nothing about, poor stupid little woman.

That's Senator Burris to you. No matter what happens going forward, his tactics worked to get him seated in the US Senate and have provided the capstone to his personal monument (i.e. mausoleum). He's still better off than if he'd been upfront and truthful from the start. This is a valuable lesson for children.

A pretty good story -
So I'm at the radiation clinic with my 85 year-old dad today. And we're cooling our heels in the little examination room waiting on Dr. Chou. Where we are about to hear that my father's temple will " look like a baby's butt " for the 5th or 6th time. This clinic has a retired preacher, hovering around the place. Chuck , just oozes Texas Preacher.
So it's been 10 mins. , and Chuck comes into the room and whips this 45 sec. prayer on us. I mean a good one, the words were like some Greek actor in Classical Times. About Jesus, and health, and just all around "Goodness".
And when he finished, and let go of our hands. I waited the perfect comic beat, and said, " Damn Fine Prayer Chuck ! "

"If I get anymore apolitical , I'm going to turn into a unicorn" I think it must be due to the death of your TV Bob.
It going on 5 weeks now for me without cable. The shaking stopped in about 3 weeks. Then I started to get the shine back to my eyes and my sense of humor back. I finally think I'm close to being cured.
Some of you here tried to enable me by suggesting I get a satelitte out here. There actually is one in the front yard but the wires are cut.
The only pundit I care about is inches away from my fingertips and there is a picture of him in the corner staring at the dirt. I'm concerned he may have a serious crick in his neck by now.
I'm thinking about opening a bed and, you have to get away from cable, breakfast out here. You'd love the Carol's omlet I perfected..spinach, 7 cheeses...including feta.....Interested Chef Sheila?
And Don, yesterday morning I was channeling someone but I don't know who. Probably someone you used to know in a previous life.
And Bob, prayer and Organic Gardening magazine? You guys hit pay dirt at that clinic.
I still say that Burris is more likely the rule rather than the exception in the Senate. Don't you remember what you already know about some of the rest of them.

in the myth, Athena challenges Arachne to a weaving contest in order to prove herself. The expert crafts goddess Athena is favorably impressed with Arachne's weaving of divine debaucheries:
This the bright Goddess passionately mov'd,
With envy saw, yet inwardly approv'd.
The scene of heav'nly guilt with haste she tore,
Nor longer the affront with patience bore;
A boxen shuttle in her hand she took,
And more than once Arachne's forehead struck.
Athena can't tolerate the affront to her pride, though, so she turns Arachne into a spider doomed to weave forever. From the unfortunate spider-woman comes the name for the 6-legged creatures -- arachnids.

bethy, I just read your repost about Sotomayor. I also went and read the opinions that have been posted as "her" opinions. A few things to remember when looking at what she has written are that every majority opinion she wrote for a 3 judge panel was the agreement of 2 of the judges about what the applicable law was and whether the district court had applied it correctly within the standard of review the circuit court employs; en banc opinions she either wrote or joined in involved the collective agreement of a majority of all the sitting judges about what the law was and whether the disterict court had correctly applied it to the facts within the applicable standard of review; the per curiam opinions are about specific cases with facts peculiar enough that the application of the law o them should not be considered precedent in the circuit; concurring opinions are opinions in which she agreed with the outcome of the case, but not necessarily the reasoning employed to get there, and dissenting opinions are a disagreement with the outcome of the case for whatever reason, and why, with an explanation of her view of how the case should appropriately been analyzed and the result that should have been reached.
All that said, her most controversial rulings have been, largely because of the type case the 2nd circuit sees most often, in cases that looked at very narrow, technical parts of the law, and in each case it appears to me that she employed a narrow reading and strict application of the law to the facts presented. The firefighter exam case is the only possible exception I see, but even it was decided on an examination of the application of laws to the facts of the underlying by the district court, and while brief, the opinion adopted the reasoning used by the district judge, which was exhaustive. The dissents and concurrences are very interesting reading if you like reading that sort of thing. What is notable is that 7 of the 13 judges in the circuit voted not to hear the case vby the whole panel, so whatever criticism exists about the decision, a majority of the judges who reviewed the case agreed that Sotomayor decided it correctly.

Rez, I'm not sure about that either, but her opinion that it is constitutional to deny aid to countries on whatever grounds is correct IMHO. We are under no CONSTITUTIONAL obligation to provide aid to any country for any reason, so it would be constitutional to deny aid to any country for any reason.Sounds like strict construction rather than policy making to me.

Craig is right and I agreed at the time. Obama instead sided with Reid who basically said, "over my dead body will Burris be seated". Then Obama quietly reversed himself as Congress did. They had a chance under the rules to hold on Burris until all documents were examined.
Pogo, I did not object to Sotomajor, but clearly there are problems despite your spin. I guess there would be problems with any pick these days. But Warren, had Roberts or Scalia ever said anything close to the words Sotomajor said regarding her hispanic experiance, sparks would fly. Just look at the Liberal lynching of the Clintons over words much less blatant.

Carol,
I try to write every day and lately the muse is on vacation so I get the morning guilts. I know three phenomenally busy ladies who still manage to blog daily, and if they weren't such good writers, I would hate them.
Today, I just copped out and did a short paragraph asking for suggestions of things to do with the next 20 years of my life (after the corn is harvested of course) and a reprise from three years ago.

Max:
Scalia and Roberts would not say something like that - because it would not be true in their case.
For example, imagine Roberts saying that he thinks he will improve the decisions rendered by the S. Ct. because he will add the perspective of another rich, privileged white guy.
That statement is not even debatable - it is absurd on its face.
On the other hand, saying that Sotomayor will add a new and diverse perspective that has the possibility to produce opinions that have greater empathy and credibility to more of the population - has merit.
Now you might disagree with the statement. But it is not racist or outrageous.
But I will grant you that Sonia's quote was a poorly worded statement and that she will need to clarify and explain at her confirmation.
(But I will not grant you - or Fox news - that this poorly worded statement disqualifies her. After a long career of writing and public speaking - the right has seized upon 2 quotes to try and paint a misleading caricature of a very accomplished and respected jurist.)

If they were asked to do it, I wonder how the Republican detractors would describe Gen Powell's ethnic, racial, and social background.

A bunch nonsense regarding the statements about "her hispanic experience". Alito essentially said the same thing regarding his immigrant ancestral background.

For all of the trouble with Burris, the real question is what is his voting record? How does he compare to a Lieberman or Feinstein?
Republicans will have a field day with the innuendo, but at the end of the day what really matters is how he votes.

max, see yesterday's post by pogo linking to orrin's comments during clarence's confirmation session.
don1, agree we should look at his voting record and whether or not he has done anything of value for his constituency/country since he's been there?
"I think if more of them were put under a microscope more of the same would come to light."
buford, unfortunately you are right.

Gay rights advocates Wednesday blasted two veteran attorneys for filing a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn Proposition 8, California's voter-approved same-sex marriage ban, saying the move is premature and could be disastrous for the marriage movement.
While they knew of the objections, attorneys Theodore B. Olson and David Boies - who opposed each other during the 2000 Bush v. Gore presidential election case - filed the suit Friday in San Francisco on behalf of two same-sex couples who wanted to be married but were denied because of Prop. 8.
