Ft. Worth schools are now closed until at least 5/11 due to N1H1 Flu. I prefer Swine flu as it's less scientific.

They're doing the right thing, IMHO.

  20. Reported this AM : Germany has slashed its growth predictions after corporations reported that earnings plunged.

The engine of Europe seems to be missing on 2 cylinders : finance and political leadership.

  21. Btw, Dexter, nixon and babybush were both worse than the air head.

babybush has to be the worst president in our history. The catastrophic defeats in Indochina and Iraq dwarf any SNAFU by the old deranger.

nixon's White House tapes of his first months in office reveal that he thought we'd lost in Viet Nam. Yet he slogged on, killing another 32,000 American boys, just so that he "wouldn't be the first president in history to lose a war." Only a monster sacrifices 32,000 people to save his own ego.

In Jan 2001, baby bush said that hardening the cockpits of airliners so that hijackers couldn't take over the planes was too expensive : he said $200 million. That bush decision made 9/11 inevitable. baby bush made up the reasons for his war in Iraq, lying like no president has ever lied before. That might not have been so bad, if he hadn't proceeded to lose the war he chose. On top of that, babybush let bin ladin walk away, and made our soldiers and marines suffer the shame of war crimes. reagan once accidently got one of our spies killed by blabbing about him in front of an open mic, but babybush's team intentionally destroyed all the informers who aided our most important spy, and ended her utility...for a personal vendetta. Finally baby bush and his team completed the deregulation of Wall Street and gave huge subsidies to people who bought gas hogs. Making us vulnerable to financial pirates and Iran.

As stupid as the chucklehead was, reagan never accomplished the evil that either nixon or babybush achieved,

diva, yeah, a lot of people this time of year start to show symptoms much like flu.... i'm particularly worried about those who have incipient lyme disease and will get inappropriate treatment or at least not treated soon enough with antibiotics because their health care providers will be waiting for flu test results.

Won't the toughest viruses in people survive the longest, have the slowest incubation periods and be even more virulent?

Aren't they just delaying the inevitable? People will get sick, most won't die. Now the media has back-tracked to say 8 confirmed swine flu cases in Mexico & 170 suspected.

Swine flu prompts World Health Organization to raise alert level
"The level hits phase 5, a situation in which the likelihood of a pandemic 'is very high or inevitable,' an official says. A toddler is the first confirmed death in the U.S.

Phase 5 is considered a situation in which the likelihood of a pandemic "is very high or inevitable," said Dr. Keiji Fukuda, an assistant director-general.

Arizona, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maine and Nevada joined the list of states with confirmed cases, bringing the total to 11 states. Texas said its total had climbed to 16 cases; New York has 51; and California has 15."

    Ping,

That copyright designation could turn out to be important to Smithfield. If the original source is confirmed as pig fluid intrusion into the ground water, then they will want confirmation that anyone who dies can't sue them unless they had that particular virus.

"There is a major cultural schism developing in America. But it's not over abortion, same-sex marriage or home schooling, as important as these issues are. The new divide centers on free enterprise -- the principle at the core of American culture.

  89. I've made fun of swine flu here, and probably shouldn't, but I stand by my call to keep this in perspective.

As of 11 AM yesterday, there are 91 cases confirmed in the US in 10 states - 3 states, CA, TX and NY have more than 2 confirmed cases, 3 states have 2 cases and 4 states have one case. One death has occurred - a 22 month old Mexican kid in TX. Those figures are cumulative since the beginning of the outbreak.

    http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

In Week 14 of the year (Apr. 11) there were 259 confirmed cases of the flu (seasonal flu - that thing we all know and love so well, and many of us get vaccinated against) and 6 deaths from it in the US, with 30 of 102 reporting jurisdictions in the US reporting regional or widespread flu activity. That was just for that week.

Like KC says, wash your hands obsessively. And feel free to order the pork.

    Posted by: newpogo.myopenid.com Author Profile Page | April 30, 2009 10:18 AM

  90. Lets give this "flu out break" its real name. It is the spring break flu. All those people went to Mexico for spring break and brought back the flu with them.

Also, stop it with the 1918 swine flu scary panic inducers. An interesting fact I learned on NPR yesterday. The 1918 pandemic was determined to be an avian flu.

A lot of needless panic and false reports going on out there. ex: private school closed in San Diego because the teacher were sick with the springbreak flu turns out they weren't.
And the 1 US death was a child near death brought in from Mexico for treatment.

So far the spring break flu has been mild and followed typical flu patterns. That is dangerous if you immune system is compromised. If I was in that category I would be taking precautions. I'm not so I'm not worried.

  91. "wash your hands obsessively. And feel free to order the pork."

Pogo, Good advice, and that's all you can do. That hand washing thing needs to become a habit for everyone, whether there's an epidemic or not. Surprising how much less often you get ill, if you do it often. The hands are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.

It's been said specifically that it's 'not' a food born virus. So, I can see why the pork industry is annoyed at the loss of business. They said it's also affected other business, one of which I read was grain (corn).

Texas is always one of the worst flu states every year. I don't know if it's because people get out and about so much, or because of the heat and humidity (which grows everything out of proportion).

  97. Jack, I did see your post from last night that you're most concerned about your father (and I think you said his wife). The flu is 'always' something to be concerned about. I agree with you, this year may not be much different than other years, but still, the extra precautions can't hurt. The last time I had the flu (which was about seven or eight years ago) I felt like I was going to die. It was miserable. It should never be taken lightly. We don't have to be obsessed, in order to be careful and aware. The best thing your dad can do is stay home more, since you get it from other people, especially in crowds.

  101. chloe, credit where credit is due - to KGC.

Industrial pig farming is a disgusting business, as is inductrial chicken farming, and contamination and disease associated with both are commonplace. Ground water and surface water are particularly hard hit - in fact, nitrogen laden runoff from chicken farms in the Chesapeake Bay watershed - particularly the South Branch of the Potomac River have been a problem for years impacting both the Potomac and the Chesapeake.

Then 9/11 happened and there were apparently no more shark attacks.

This H1N1 outbreak (and potential pandemic) is something to keep a watch on, and certainly take common sense precautions, but let's not obsess over it yet.

    Posted by: cajunjoe.pip.verisignlabs.com Author Profile Page | April 30, 2009 11:00 AM

  105. The only problem I have with the flu coverage is that they seem to be burying just how mild it is. Flu is flu. This one at least for now appears to be a mild strain and if you aren't compromised in some way and you catch it, you will be miserable for a few days.

Normal hygiene precautions plus staying out of crowds should be more than enough. All the emergency services seem to be in place in case the situation changes.

If the news channels are this crazed over something like this, what would they do with an outbreak of something truly ugly .... screech, run around in circles, while breaking down into uncontrollable hysterical sobs from a fetal position?

Biden tells family to stay off planes, subways

    Thursday, April 30, 2009

    (04-30) 08:11 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Joe Biden said Thursday he advised his family to stay off airplanes and subways because of the new swine flu, a remark that forced the vice president's office to backtrack and prompted one airline official to complain about "fear-mongering."

"I would tell members of my family — and I have — that I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now," Biden said on NBC's "Today" show.

Biden, who has a reputation for off-the-cuff remarks, went beyond any precautions recommended by the federal government. In discussing his personal advice to his family, he said simply, "That's me."

Within two hours, Biden's office issued a statement backing off the remarks and suggesting he was talking about travel to Mexico.

"On the 'Today Show' this morning, the vice president was asked what he would tell a family member who was considering air travel to Mexico this week," said spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander. "The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico. If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways."

Biden, who has three grown children and five grandchildren, was asked whether he would advise his own family against flying to Mexico on a commercial flight.

"It's not just going to Mexico, if you're in a confined aircraft and one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft," Biden said on NBC. "That's me. I would not be at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway."

  152. I'm wondering what problems the sanitizing of schools, playgrounds, etc., will pose? Local video of a playground being hosed down with some chemical out of a plastic drum. (I once saw a 2-year old lick the wall of a subway station in NY, so you just know they'll be ingesting whatever it is...unless the rain washes it off down into the water supply.) Look at a can of household sanitizer; active ingredient is ethynol.

  156. The saga of a potential swine flu infection of a group of eleven school kids from Winnsboro (SC) Academy started making the rounds on Thursday. Parents and school administrators were quite concerned--so concerned that they suspended classes on Friday.

But not so concerned that they did not keep the eleven from attending their Saturday night senior prom.

Today, ten of the kids were added to the ranks of those verified as having that strain. How many more do you reckon they'll add in the next week?

Let's hear it for the students, parents, faculty, and administrators of Winnsboro Academy, along with the public health officials, and elected leadership of Winnsboro, South Carolonia!

Dallas, They can just wash it down, once they've killed the virus on that playground. I'm sure they considered the risks before they made the decision to spray.

I notice from Pogo's link, Texas is moving up in cases. Now we just have to catch NY.

MSNBC showed its strengths -- at least two of them, anyway -- by going to ravaging Keith Olbermann and ravishing Rachel Maddow. Two smart people are a lot better than an arsenal of computerly contraptions.

The Denver Posts's Joanne Ostrow didn't like CNN's theatrics either: "After CNN's performance Wednesday night, thinking and cable news have never felt farther apart."

  161. 'Out of an abundance of concern, we decided it was best allowing the eleven Academy students having flu-like symptoms upon their return from Mexico, to attend Saturday night's senior prom.

We believed it was better keeping the disease entirely within the Academy community rather than risk having the students go off on their own to points that we could neither monitor nor control.

Doing our best for you and yours!

  162. chloe - Not sure if you were serious about this: "I'm sure they considered the risks before they made the decision to spray." I kinda doubt that. The superindentent of Ft. Worth schools seemed to think that parents could come up with a childcare solution overnight, mentioning that business would just have to co-operate with parents. "The authorities in Fort Worth, Texas announced the temporary closure of all district schools, likely to last until May 12, after ONE student was confirmed to have the flu and THREE other cases were suspected. Some 80,000 students will be affected. Dozens of schools elsewhere in the country have also been temporarily shuttered, news services reported."

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/01/health/01flu.html?hp

Lessee now, that's an 80,000 to one ratio for confirmed cases and a 20,000 to one ratio, if you include suspected cases. I wonder if anyone thinks maybe that is an overreaction? You make the call.

  171. solar, something you said yesterday about each of us being bits of this and that reminded me of this song. perhaps it could also be dedicated to our new virus friend who is sailing in some of us right now.

    SOMOS EL BARCO
    by Lorre Wyatt

Somos el barco, somos el mar,
Yo navego en ti, tu navegas en mi
We are the boat, we are the sea, I sail in you, you sail in me

The stream sings it to the river, the river sings it to the sea
The sea sings it to the boat that carries you and me

Somos el barco, somos el mar,
Yo navego en ti, tu navegas en mi
We are the boat, we are the sea, I sail in you, you sail in me

The boat we are sailing in was built by many hands
And the sea we are sailing on, it touches every land

Somos el barco, somos el mar,
Yo navego en ti, tu navegas en mi
We are the boat, we are the sea, I sail in you, you sail in me

So with our hopes we set the sails
And face the winds once more
And with our hearts we chart the waters never sailed before

Somos el barco, somos el mar,
Yo navego en ti, tu navegas en mi
We are the boat, we are the sea, I sail in you, you sail in me

"Its too early yet to know what we are in for. The 1918 epidemic started in North America with a wave in the Spring, a reemergence of a second wave in the fall. This situation could parallel that pattern. The US has a team in Mexico trying to determine the natural history properties of the pathogen. Its not clear how different the US, Mexico patterns are since the epidemic is so much more advanced in Mexico."

  194. Bay Area doctors and health officials are looking hard for the novel virus - Influenza Type A, subtype H1N1, more commonly known as swine flu - and they are finding it. Confirmed cases have now been reported in San Francisco and Marin counties.

Probable cases, defined as cases that appear to be swine flu but have not been tested against the actual strain, have been reported in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa and Solano counties.

San Mateo County's two cases are novel because neither victim had been in Mexico nor had any known contact with anybody who had been there, said county Health Officer Dr. Scott Morrow. One patient is a 46-year-old woman from the county; the other was a 50-year-old man from another state who left a plane at San Francisco airport because he was feeling ill.

The lack of an obvious connection to Mexico, Morrow said, means that swine flu probably is "widespread ... far beyond what the numbers are indicating."

But like other health officials, Morrow discouraged people from getting a false sense of danger. The perception is that there has been a sudden explosion of cases, he said, but that is based in the fact that until last week, local health officials weren't even testing for H1N1.

Not a problem. Everyone gets things mixed around here at one time or another. Blue's description of the administrator reminded me of a boss from long ago.

My water pump failed on the freeway and I called saying I wouldn't be in to work as I had to get it replaced. Didn't explain that I had to wait for friends to get me off freeway, find used water pump and get it installed while juggling day care and school schedules.

When I came in to work he asked why I didn't call triple A and just charge it?

There are times when you mouth just gapes at the total lack of reality in the minds of the always comfortable.

  205. "Flatus, I am waiting for that catfish story you promised."

Carol, back in '69 we were stationed at Nellis AFB just at the edge of Las Vegas. We lived downtown in a 4-plex in a nice part of town.

One day I decided it was the perfect opportunity to teach our kids how to fish, so I went and bought some fishing stuff and licenses for Stinky and me. Then, after work, we all got into the car and we were off to Lake Meade which was about 40-minutes from where we lived.

We fished for an hour or so. Of the four of us, Stinky was the only one to catch something, a catfish about 14-inches long. The kids were getting bored, so I pulled in the stringer and tossed the fish into the ice chest.

We drove back home and I carried the ice chest upstairs and opened it to take out the fish so I could clean it. Much to my surprise, the angry catfish was flopping around the bottom of the dry chest. I had never seen a fish still alive after more than a few minutes out of water, so I told Stinky, there's no way that I can kill this fish after it's stayed alive all this time.

So, I filled the bathtub with about 8 or 10 inches of water and dumped the poor fish into it.

All night long the damned fish swam laps and practiced racing turns and otherwise demonstrated its athletic prowess. I don't think any of us got any sleep because of all the racket. Fortunately it was Friday night so no big deal.

But, Saturday morning, the fish was just as happy as any catfish could possibly be. So, we had a family council and I told the other three that there was no way that I could kill a fish that had survived the events of the past 18 hours. I offered that the right thing to do was to take it back to the lake.

So I dumped it back into the empty ice chest and we all piled into the car and drove back to the lake. When, we got there, the fish was still flopping around, as live as ever. So we went down to the water's edge and tossed him back in.

Without so much as a wave goodbye, it was gone.

We drove back home, in silence, pondering what we had experienced. And, when I went to work on Monday, I told my fish story. Was I embarrassed when the guys from catfish country told me that the damned things had lungs and could live out of water for ages.

Despite that, I'm glad that we returned the fish to where we found it.

I hope that little critter had some small understanding that he was indeed the luckiest fish in the world on that particular Saturday morning.

  210. I didn't know that about catfish Flatus. Can all catfish do that or just a particular species?

Your story is very similar to an experience I had. One summer, many moons ago, I was out fishing a rice irrigation canal. In the spring, a couple of weeks after my stepfather started up his pumps to flood the rice fields, I went out to look for fish.

I could walk down the little canals and just look for the fish in the fresh clear water. I did and found a nice sized bass hanging out. I had my tackle box and rod and reel.

I threw one of everything I had in the box at him. When the lure hit the water, he would come up, look at it, and then return to where he was resting. Sometimes he would actually take a little taste and spit it out.

Finally I just put a hook on the line and eased it over to where he was resting. I directed it right into his mouth and pulled up. I had him.

It was so unsportswoman of me that even though he looked really tasty and I was drooling for him fried up, I had to let him go. It just wasn't fair how I caught him.

Posted by: Colorado Bob Author Profile Page | April 30, 2009 10:28 PM

  213. Carol, I just took a quick look. There are more than 2500 species of them. Evidently many have portions of their anatomy that function as rudimentary lungs when Mother Nature decides to turn off the rain. You probably have heard of walking catfish that 'migrate' from pond to pond as their habitats dry up. They are using this lung-like capability to survive out of water.

When I go fishing, I really don't care if I catch anything or not. I just want a nice quiet isolated place to relax and drink some beer.

  217. I have a bird story ..........

Last evening as I was watering my mother's garden, an orphan sparrow darted around the "Holly Hock Forest " . A t first I thought it was a giant horny toad , but horny toads have been gone from this country for 30 years.

Then she moved again , and I saw that it was a small female who just tried her wings too soon. I saw her again tonight, and had my camera. I think I got a good shot, but one can never tell . Anyway she made it through her first night on the ground. I was really happy to see her.
The garden is up now and will give her pretty good shelter, she's a sparrow so eating isn't a problem . She just might beat the odds.

I'll post her picture on the Blue Corn page.

I was watching BBC News on the telly when the news person reported David Souter is expected to retire in June, so I went to Facebook and then huffpo to read Craig's comments...Souter's a good guy, not pretentious, drove his own Volkswagen car to work, and is a voice of reason...but at age 69, he has had enough, and of course Barack Obama can now appoint another like-minded Justice, we can assume.
i have never thought of Supreme Court Justices as people I would "miss"...but Souter will be missed by many, I reckon.

"He said, 'If Obama wins, I'll be the first one to retire,' " said the friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because Souter had not yet announced a retirement. ----wapo story
