Europeans Love Obama's Style, But Resist His Leadership

| | Comments (308)

If the Europeans like President Barack Obama so much, why won't they do what he asks? They swoon at the sight of him, purr to the sound of his oratory, marvel at the historic racial breakthrough of his election and positively gush over his wife.

obama_poster.jpgBut when he actually asks them to do big and tough things, they excuse themselves from the table like the cowardly dinner partner who hides in the rest room when the check comes.

Obama told NATO countries on Friday that if they didn't join him in sending more troops to Afghanistan the terrorists will be busting down the doors to Europe. So far, NATO's member nations have most "turned their backs" to Obama's "impassioned pleas" for more troops, according to The Times of London.

'Americanized' Afghan War

UPDATE 2:00 PM__(New York Times): "European leaders offered few extra troops on Saturday for President Obama's intensified effort in Afghanistan, with most of the soldiers only on temporary security assignment, underlining deep divisions within the alliance over the war. ... European allies agreed to provide up to 5,000 new troops for Afghanistan, the White House said Saturday. But 3,000 of them are temporary deployments to provide security for the August elections in Afghanistan. A further 1,400 to 2,000 soldiers will also be made available, to form embedded training teams for the Afghan Army and the police. Mr. Obama is raising the number of American troops this year to about 68,000 from the current 38,000, which will significantly Americanize the war."

Stimulus Plan Rejected

Earlier, at the economic summit in London, Obama failed to win ambitious commitments from most other nations to stimulate their economies with government funds, as he has done in the U.S.

Obama's charm offensive won European hearts, but not their minds -- and, most importantly, not their wallets.

"and on the tv was mccartney on sullivan doing jude......."

....I have such fond memories of that song Sturge. In my late teens, I was an order typist with the phone co. One of the guys that worked on those machines would whistle that whole song from beginning to end, over and over. And he did it perfectly. So now, whenever I hear Hey Jude (or think about it), I can hear that guys whistling it. I love that song and I really loved the way he whistle it. It was the only music we had in that room.

    Ruling upholds proud Iowa tradition
"The Iowa Supreme Court's unanimous decision striking down a state law limiting marriage to only a man and a woman continues the Iowa court's tradition of recognizing inherent rights of all persons.

Friday was a day of celebration for the 12 plaintiffs from six Iowa communities who brought this lawsuit to claim the right to marry just as heterosexual couples do. It was a day of celebration, too, for all gays and lesbians, who now see their rights protected under Iowa law the same as the rights of other men and women."

"Conservative author David Horowitz, himself no stranger to controversy or heated accusations, warns that the criticism of Obama among some conservatives has approached “over-the-top hysteria." It’s not just Stalin comparisons, Horowitz wrote this past week on FrontPageMag.com — one contributor likened the president to David Koresh, Charles Manson and Saddam Hussein.

....they expected criticism of Obama out of the gate, but remain “stunned at just how vicious the attacks have been.”

after 8 yrs of a condescending and arrogant Bush, replete with constant smirking... I think the Europeans find Obama refreshing.... I know I do....

NATO is obsolete.... it was formed as protection against an aggressive Soviet Union..... that country no longer exists....

I've read that European economies are in worst shape than ours.... I can see why many wouldn't want to put more money into the rat hole of the Afghan war....

right now it looks like Europe is enjoying meeting the new American president.... but they are not Obots.... thank god.... hero worship is cute when you're young..... but totally unhealthy when you're mature....

    Chloe,

I don't understand why Frum is surprised. Maybe he just wasn't listening while Bush was in office. There is a far right, element that is conspiratorial, violent, super religious and deeply racist. Fox and conservative radio is where they go to get that hatred reinforced so they don't feel all alone and out of step .... "See the ratings, there are others out there like me!".

In all honesty, it is the McVeighs of this world that scare me more than any wandering AQ that might make it across the border. The McVeighs are already here in very big numbers, and they aren't happy.

    "Right-wing Catholics vs. Obama"

"I've tried to ignore the controversy over the University of Notre Dame's invitation to President Obama to give its commencement speech in May. I don't believe the effort to block his visit can succeed. For more than 30 years it's been a tradition for the renowned Catholic university to invite the new U.S. president to give the address and receive a doctorate from the law school. Nobody protested when George W. Bush visited, despite his ardent support for the death penalty, which the Catholic Church opposes.

But the growing movement to stop Obama's visit isn't your ho-hum sort of Catholic League media dust-up, where Bill Donohue harumphs on television and then goes away. It's part of a well-funded lobbying effort by a group of right-wing Catholics to run liberal Catholics, and dissenting doctrine, out of the church, and to recruit the remainder of the faithful for the GOP."

  19. Craig as usual is spot on. And what is more interesting is that European leaders are getting hip to Barak's formula for generating the appearance of progress without real substance. How so?

Well, NATO gushed with praise and vague promises, but with more than 1.5 million troops at their disposal they offer the "promise" of "up to" 5000 more for Afghanistan. Europeans don't want to be there, Merkel made no promise to move her troops anywhere near the action. And yet, everyone is thrilled with our boy Obama and how much he got done.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/04/europe-troops-afghanistan-nato-obama

On issues as important as AFPAK there was little discussion about the failure to stop illegal arms shipments to Hamas and Hizb"Allah, missile defense, Sudan, Somalia (yes, areas that concern NATO), Russian demands for the West to end military support for Georgia, Russian support for Iran and their declaration to build military bases in the artic to protect their resource claims, help for Iraq in light of AQ rearming as the US pulls out, pressure on Syria to reveal nuclear programs and the reasoning for continued deployment of US troops in Europe. Also, as Obama talks up zero nuclear weapons there is little talk about Russian modernization of their nukes, the idea to spread nuclear technology, the clock on Iran or the production of tactical nuetron bombs by China, India and Pakistan.

So Obama's visit was essential much ado about nothing as EU already welcomed AFPAK last week and addresses none of these issues just mentioned.

Smile for the camera, look like good friends (though Turkey is very pissed at the selection for new Dannish NATO head) and above all keep saying much was accomplished despite the evidence to the contrary.

A bit like "mission accomplished"? Different Presidents, same BS, but at least Iraq is far better now than when Obama declared Iraq is lost.

And of course the NATO results were not unlike the G 20 results which Craig has already mentioned.

My comment was about the attitude of the Europeans. There was no change from their historical attitudes.

With Obama the change is night vrs day when compared to the Bush administration.

  30. King Abdullah is dying and I suggest everyone here looks at the dude that will replace him. Several counterintelligence blogs report an effort by the Saudis to arm and support a new extremist group in Gaza to rival Hamas.

Egypt boycotted the celebration at the Arab summit which applauded Bashir of the Sudan. At least Egypt tries. Jordan is very worried about the AQ threat to hit the West Bank and Bibi has reached out to them to provide additional security.

The sad truth is that despite money and strateic logic, Arabs don't back up US strategy. On one hand AQ and Iran threaten them with impunity but on the other, years of pathetic social programming has created a street opposed to leadership.

Kuwait has even given Iran support for all we have done. Turkey is pissed at NATO, Yemen is under attack from AQ, and the gulf states are now making nice with Iran because they suspect Obama will end the Carter Doctrine and pull out.

And just for the record. Oil prices will skyrocket for Russia should fighting start in the Gulf. Also France stands to gain if Arabs see Iran actually get the bomb so French nuclear industry has their motives too.

Merkel has yet to stand up to major German companies selling to Iran, Germany is Iran's biggest trading partner so ask yourself why sanctions haven't worked. China has done squat in Sudan and most Chinese help in patrolling hot spots serves their flow of trade.

That gives you a better picture of the forces at work......

Posted by: maxtrue Author Profile Page | April 4, 2009 1:07 PM

  31. For our sake I hope they are right. If Obama was serious about missile defense he could counter Russian demands and put systems in the Gulf, Israel, the Med and begin a NATO network in Germany, France and England.

The Danes have shown more balls that the Germans.

And we made former Soviet controlled nations renounce their WMD projects and enrichment. We could always reverse that as a threat to Putin as well as taking MEK off our terrorist list like Europe has done.

I do not see Obama playing hardball. Let's hope he is better at that eventually than he was with Bowling.

And we know how Gore loves Heartland:

Of course Hansen's level-headed claims, new reports of earth entering a cold period, new reports on sub spots/magnetic cycles, new studies on the migrating magnetic poles on earth all complicate the "science" and throw a wrench into the religious consensus of “Global Warming”. The usefulness of now "global climate change", (and let's get the new Newspeak right), as a driving political force out paces the science behind it. And please don’t put me in the category of anti-intellectual dolts serving a conservative agenda. I am fully aware of data that suggest some human impact on the present levels of C02. As far as I know, all 5 billion humans do breath and shit and require some form of energy beyond direct sun light to survive.

    Here are some good ones:

If all the artic icebergs melt, will sea levels rise?

How much snow falls into the oceans each year? Has that pattern changed?

How much new ice is made on Antarctica as old shelf ice tumbles into the sea?

If air traffic stop for a day, would the earth heat up? (hint: see 9/11)

What role does the earth's magnetic field play in cloud formation and what role does the sun play?

What role do plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes play in the absorption rate of CO2 of the sea?

How much C02 will be absorbed by added biomass from higher mean temperatures?

Forgive me my independent thinking, but without a finer grasp of the issue, mitigation might be an awfully expensive mistake. The UN is already protesting an Indian experiment to sequester test amounts of CO2 in the sea as regulations precede common sense.

The funniest thing lately is watching shock ads rip the notion of clean coal. Maybe the same company that recently did the new NY anti-smoking ads made these.....LOL

Then Obama's face appears on another ad offering the lofty campaign promise to support clean coal. This ad of course is from the energy companies.

Do we adversely affect the eco system? Absolutely. There are many serious bad affects. Climate "change" is one potentially serious issue and it requires more science, more vetted plans of mitigation and engineered efforts not disproportionate to the expense of other environmental remedies.

  54. My understanding of scientific method Bob, is you run tests to disprove a theory, not search for data to confirm it. The problem is such tests would be hard to make. By searching for supportive date and marginalizing what we don't want to hear,, we lose sight of the majority of data(known and unknown) that cannot as yet be understood.

Maybe if we take that computer that discovered Newton's Laws after looking at reams of data and had it scan climate, astrophysical and historical data, it might discover a process. As yet, we don't know how the ice ages came about.

  55. Max,

As much as global warming concerns me, I'm more worried about water. The rivers and oceans aren't some huge washing machine and we are dumping tons upon tons of pollutants into both, some of them with long term genetic effects.

Ground water is being depleted at an alarming rate that will become not only a threat to humans but to agriculture and fisheries.

None of this will be repaired until the filthiest species on the planet stops being so reckless and wasteful with the resources.

  61. Jamie you hit it squarely. There are some serious envirnmental problems. First you need economic growth for the capital. Then you need great plans for mitigation and correction. These green fixes must also have some profitablity or they won't catch on. We don't have the money to simply pay the full cost.

Now should be the era of vetting the fixes while stream lining the existing approaches. We have the time and resources to make the switch over less economy crashing.

Water, Soil. reversing the damage done by dams, controlled fishing, control of waste, preservation of wild life and forests. We have a whole range of problems and this fixation with climate change distorts a rational and pragmatic approach.

Boy the G 20 really made climate a big issue. Meanwhile many things are getting worse. Problem is you can say the sky is falling on more than one issue at a time given voter mentality. Climate blots out the rest.

I could understand an environmentalist perspective with a goal of making the earth a more habitable place for humans, but if you don't care about humanity, then what's the point? The earth will be fine in the long run, until it's consumed by the sun.

  69. Craig,

We, the American people, have largely viewed NATO as our European allies with us being a related entity. In fact, we are a co-equal member of the alliance, albeit a founding member and the most militarily capable.

Americans should realize that non-US NATO members physically came to the States immediately after 9/11. They flew AWACS missions and provided interceptors in support of NORAD. They we're fulfilling their mutual defense obligations.

Methinks, most of the non-US members considered their obligation fulfilled when the Taliban government that had hosted Osama and company, was ousted following a military campaign in which NATO forces led by the US were clearly dominant.

Everything would have been fine had Bush, at that point, declared "Mission Accomplished" packing our bags for a return to our normal garrisons. The accompanying non-US NATO forces would also have returned to their deserved parades and chest thumpings.

Instead, Mr Bush ignored the reality of that nations history by staying on to democratize the undemoctratizable. That's why were in our current mess, and that's why our European friends have become unallied.

It's time for serious mission-shrink and a return to a clandestine special operations involvement aimed at decapitating what's left of al-Qa'ida.

In addition, no one knows what happened to them after August 1587 - making their fate one of the oldest mysteries of Colonial America."

"Those who wanted Frederick gone insist their opposition is about ability, not ideology. 'To me it was about job performance, plain and simple,' said Lee Talley, a Republican activist from Portsmouth who did not have a vote in the process. It's not about political issues at all. 143. good morning, oldsea, bethy and all you lovely lurkers.

couldn't decide yesterday about the casting for my role in cbob's play. it boiled down to kate hepburn or whoopi goldberg... (had to give up that delightful fantasy of george clooney)... now, in the cold dark of predawn, i feel more like dame margaret rutherford would do justice to the part.

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.
My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'
'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'
'My God!' said my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

corey played by young clint eastwood

lb played by peter o'toole (a la lion in winter role)

    jack played by lee marvin

    flatus played by george scott

    Ivy,

Back a long time ago they had radio spots advertising Virginia Dare wine. I think the jingle went something like, "say it again with Virginia Dare". I can't help but think that went a long way towards keeping the gentle lady in school children's minds.

as i told pogo....i dont have a stand on whether or where or when they build the parkway to the outer islands....but if the newspaper would simply start giving an accurate description of the number of accidents on this formerly rural road, it would go a long way towards giving people out here an accurate view of the situation and perhaps aid them in forming an opinion not based upon trying to hold onto a past that is, uh....gone with the wind.......lol

It wasn't so unrealistic when it was being pitched. The reason everyone is not going all out in support of Obamas war is because they know just like before we will drive this country off a cliff to spend whatever the effort takes. Could it be an effort to gain support troops from other country's so they don;t have to draft here?

"In these circumstances any American leader would be wise to apologise and declare an end to the era of unilateralism. But Mr Obama goes about the task with a conviction that owes much to the fact that he was campaigning on precisely this basis long before the subprime crisis hit Wall Street. “This trip has confirmed what I sensed about him almost two years ago at our first meeting,” says Zbigniew Brzezinski, a former national security adviser. “He understands that the novelty of the worldwide political awakening requires a redefinition of America’s role.”

    second thoughts on above casting:
    corey played by russell crowe
cbob played by clint (young or old, choice is yours)

sturge, you still got your heart set on brad? sean connery might be a more sympathetic pick (depending on how you stand about scotland seceding from uk. i think he's picky about his roles nowadays)

Same reason some people do not go to work.

If you give them what they need and do not have to do it themselves - then why should they.

The public talk of Bush and American activities is one thing. The Silent reality is the European's love to hide behind mother USA big and broad shoulders as we took the position of Peace Keepers. It is a long and great history of our country and much American blood for the service of others.

Our old leaders enjoyed that position - I am happy to see Barack working to CHANGE the position and my European friends need to step up.

  186. chloe, re casting decisions

all this should be determined ultimately by cbob since it's his dream play to tell the tales (like the play "our town") of musician ghosts sitting in a texas bar at tables with red-checkered cloths. except for sturge as a live music man and cbob as the stage manager/narrator, i think of us tmrs just as background... no paying parts, only cameos, probably won't even merit union pay.

  213. that old tree used to be a hell of a place....just out in the woods down a dirt road......couples went there to make love, belligerents went there to fight and rumble, school-cutters went there to get drunk, squirrel shooters went there for hunting........etc.........the city foreclosed somehow on it from it's rightful owner and turned it into a park.......and the tree is under threat from a prospective development around it.....that's being fought over right now......whether or not to allow this development, I mean......

Another scientist (this one from MIT) presents some climate facts GW advocates don't want to hear. Stil, facts are facts.

Obama didn't shoot down the missile NK launched. There will be nothing the UN does. The weakness the West displays is rather counterproductive. At this point, Israel has very little faith America will do anything about Iranian programs and how this helps US foreign policy is beyond my IQ. Already several news organizations are asking what Obama will do when his diplomatic attempts fails and the Press is forced to report the progress adversaries are making in passing red lines.

Last night there was a great deal of reminiscing going on about an old gathering place where musicians used to hang out in Lubbock. This led to the idea of writing a play about the place with all the ghosts telling their stories (sort of like "Our Town". Everyone enjoyed the idea of the play so much that we decided to be extras, just sitting around listening to the musicians' tales.

So pick a character or someone to play you, find a table, and then sit back and hope the narrator shows up with the stories. Patsi and Dexter you could probably tell a few tales.

I guess it's Patty Duke for me since she played the young Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker," and seeing how the pivotal event happened at a place called "Ivy Green," and seeing how today is the anniversary of that miracle. Patty's a good choice for me anyway.

  268. Chloe - that exchange between between Sea and Lord Bloggington last night was hilarious. I'm just in awe of the quick repartee . I feel more like a by-stander just enjoying it.

I want to change my casting. I had picked Natalie Portman in a fit of regression. Now I have to say that I just have to be Renee Taylor - much more realistic.

A few minutes ago I saw Fareed Zakaria with three guests talking re Obama and Europe.

The Brit said that Europe wants free rides, with us in the lead. He wasn't being snarky, just saying straight out. He then said it would be interesting to see how Obama reacted when he found no support from Europe. He said he hoped Obama would be hard- nosed. I found that interesting.

Kristoff basically agreed. The other guy was middle eastern, most likely Arab but I didn't get his name.
His comment was that this proved that the US is central to everything - a financial; crisis here causes one everywhere - that is the one that got me.

The US is central. He wasn't complaining or criticizing; he just seemed to say that the situation was just that and everyone needed to understand it - it was going to be like that for a long time.

That last paragraph is really my interpretation - those weren't his words. The biggest point is that these men were not complaining - had no axes to grind. they seemed more interested in analyzing the situation than placing blame.

Also, I saw a bit where Zakaria asked James Baker if he had no regrets about whatever part he played in the 2000 election in Florida. Zakaria sounded a little doubting. but Baker just laughed. He thought that the results gave America.......that's where I changed the channel. I didn't want to hear it again.

I agree that I want the wars to stop, but I'm very worried about what will happen in Afghanistan and Pakistan if they're left alone, and I don't mean the domino effect
    feared (?) re Viet Nam.

  292. Oh my, almost missed today's timely quote in "Ben Franklin's Almanac of Wit, Wisdom and Practical Advice" --

    "April snow breeds grass."

  293. " the Eskimos have about 7-10 words to describe snow "

But they had no word to describe the first Robin that showed up on the Arctic coastline. They had never seen a Robin.

  294. "Another scientist (this one from MIT) presents some climate facts GW advocates don't want to hear. Stil, facts are facts. "

    Max
    That is just silly.
That "another scientist" and his clouds have been around for years. Assigning a number to the negative reinforcement that occurs from an increase in clouds and water vapor that will occur as the temperature rises is indeed one of the problem variables in a global warming model.
    But something new, lol.
I've been kicking this ball around ever since I got on the Internet about 12 years ago.
    Nothing new.
BTW did you know that water vapor is also a powerful positive forcer to global warming too.
It is a complicated subject. An easy target for the bamboozlers on the internet tubes.. That's why the best source is in peer reviewed articles.

Also there is another character (down at Arizona State the last I heard) who is happy to point out the fact that plant growth is faster as CO2 levels rise,(true) and this is a negative reinforcer to global warming.
And just like the cloud guy, he is right. but what neither tell you is those facts are all taken into account by the climate models. The other thing neither like to have brought up is both are employed by the coal lobby.

The reason that they have so many words describing snow etc,,is cos it is used to live by,,,,and that first Robin (thanks I did not know that) must have been full of wonder for them,,,,but they did not know the meaning of it being there?,,,thanks

ps,,,I want to thank you for the blue corn seeds ,,they arrived in saturday's mail,,,,Judy opened them up and was surprised,,,asked about them,,so I told her about you,,and the Hopi's,,,,will get them in the garden as soon as I can.

you better cover them maters up

I'm not even thinking about planting maters, blue corn squash or okra untill the ground warms up a bit more.
Red buds are just starting to bloom here.

But the peas I planted the other day are poking through the dirt. as are the onions. Taters are a bit slower,

  302. Solar -
Check the corn farmers around you for when to plant. Ground temps are important with corn.

    Jack -
I got 450 seedlings going , with another 200 or so to go.

The state of the science was on display just a few weeks ago.

Between 2,000 and 2,500 researchers from around the world, met in Europe and presented 600 papers, and reports, at the University of Copenhagen.
The same week , another group met in a hotel in Times Square , they presented as far as I could learn, zero papers and reports.
This meeting had some 800 people attend.

" The meeting was largely framed around science, but after the luncheon, when an organizer made an announcement asking all of the scientists in the large hall to move to the front for a group picture, 19 men did so. "
