That's cute with the blog roll. This "My Neck of the Woods" is a Saturday meme where everyone doing it includes "My Neck of the Woods" in the title and then writes about something close to where they live. It's only been going for a few weeks, but some of the Texas contingent has come up with some beauties this week in Denton and Fort Worth,

"Suppressing the Vote in Florida"
"The elderly, a sizable voting bloc in Florida, would also be hard hit. They would no longer be able to use photo IDs issued by retirement centers or neighborhood associations at the polls. That would be a serious hardship for the many elderly people who do not have driver’s licenses.
Another provision would require election officials to purge voting rolls more frequently, a sore point in Florida, where an improper purge of the rolls before the 2000 election removed many eligible voters.
Republican leaders seem to be trying to push the legislation through quickly, with a minimum of public attention or comment. If they succeed, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida is already threatening to challenge parts of it in court. It is doubtful that significant parts of it, like the prohibition on giving legal advice to voters in line, could survive a constitutional challenge."

"Profile: Susan Boyle - Britain's got the unlikeliest angel
The short, plump, 47-year-old spinster who sang on Britain's Got Talent is now a global sensation"
"Whether Boyle should enhance her looks became the subject of anguished debate. Holden made a plea to the newborn star not to succumb to a makeover by Cowell, her fellow judge, who wants to sign her up to Sony and predicts a No 1 album. According to Holden, “she needs to stay exactly as she is because that’s the reason we love her”. Others pointed out that such whimsy would be detrimental to carving out a West End career."

The screeners for Britains Got Talent pulled this off once before. They knew they had a diamond in the rough, but kept it secret from the judges. The result was the surprise when Paul Potts opened his mouth.
This time, I think they did it with Boyle. She had one recording out there done for charity and her church obviously knew of her talent, so the screeners who winnow through the thousands of applicants knew exactly what was likely to happen. That doesn't mean the judges did.
I strongly suspect Cowell has it set up with the marketing machine ready to go 10 seconds after the show is filmed just in case something like this happens. He has to make his millions off of others talents some how.

The piece by "MAUREEN CALLAHAN" that Coreen posted is probably right in the Simon knew what to expect. He never said he was in the dark, as far as I can see....and obviously he knows everthing that goes on. But for this Maureen to be oh so sad that Susan mentioned being in talks with Sony...well, I say, kiss my ass Maureen. So what if she mentioned the talks? Did you expect her to be filmed slopping the hogs and saying "Crickey!"
I knew the oress would play this two ways -- first, awe....then shock.

those who pop over to read my blog know that a short while back I mentioned that Amanda McBroom's "Errol Flynn" is my favorite song. The bridge lyrics tie right in to the whole Susan Boye phenomenon.
Now fame Is Fleeting and stars they keep fallin'
Staying right up there that's the business of art
She long kisses some, and she passes by others
Disappointment and bourbon are hard on the heart.
-----
It does seem as if people just needed a respite from the constant doom and gloom stories, and Susan Boyle happened to be right there at the right time with that beautiful voice that might have been languishing forever otherwise in the church choir.

Just finished watching a Mexican movie,,,,about an Indian Benito Guarez that became president, with all the $ it takes to run for president,In most country's,,there won't be any from the ranks of the common man,,,,that's too bad for us,thats really what we need here,,,,,,,from wiki
Benito Pablo Juárez García (pronounced [beˈnit̪o ˈpaβ̞lo ˈxwaɾes gaɾˈsia]) (March 21, 1806 – July 18, 1872) was a Zapotec Amerindian who served five terms as president of Mexico: 1858–1861 as interim, 1861–1865, 1865–1867, 1867–1871 and 1871–1872.[1] For resisting the French occupation, overthrowing the Empire, and restoring the Republic, as well as for his efforts to modernize the country, Juárez is often regarded as Mexico's greatest and most beloved leader. Juárez was recognized by the United States as a ruler in exile during the French-controlled Second Mexican Empire, and got their support in reclaiming Mexico under the Monroe Doctrine after the United States Civil War ended. Benito Juárez was the first Mexican leader who did not have a military background, and also the first full-blooded indigenous national to serve as President of Mexico and to lead a country in the Western Hemisphere in over 300 years

And NBC has offered Blogo his own show. At first I thought they wanted him to be the focus of a reality show but nooooo they want him to be the host. They are waiting to see if the courts will approve What about the American public? NBC should be embarrassed.

Hey Carol --
Thanks for keeping tabs on us. We are out of the "cave." Our weather radio is still sounding off -- there it goes again -- but directly over our head it's supposed to be okay. Our biggest excitement was finding a tick on one of the dogs.
All the TV was pre-empted by wall-to-wall storm coverage. So we had no 60 Minutes (did we miss anything?) and I had wanted to catch the Hallmark movie but, alas, no show. They tend to overdo this emergency weather warning stuff on local coverage, I say. But I 'spose it's better to err on the side of caution. I never want to get so jaded that I dismiss them out of hand.

Off for the night. Stay away from Tornados, floods, and all unpleasantness.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! about the bold, that is. I didn't do nothin' else.
Well, I had a feeling it was I who started it. I wonder if I had added the correct closing that would have done the trick. Oh, well.
Sorry guys I'll try to be more careful - I'll have a little post-it with all the html signs nex to my screen, as I did at work.
I spent a good four or five hours at niece's house in her backyard with kids and other family and some of her friends with babies - a beautiful day with a nice breeze.
By the time I got home I felt as if Id' been at the beach all day - you know, you feel good but sooooo drained.
I'm trying to decide if I need a nap - HA!
Sturge I have several other books by Kenneth Roberts,
Trending into Maine and I Wanted to Write. They're both wonderful, and the first has a recipe for his grandmother's ketchup - depriving the kids of a taste of it was high punishment.
One Christmas I followed the recipe with tomatoes from my sister's garden since I was broke. It was good but more like steak sauce. There is also a recipe for baked beans I've always wanted to try.
Did you know that army rangers today still have a "manual" with Robert Rogers' rules listed? I have a copy of the rules listed on a card. If I find it, I'll post it - HA! (not much chance)

Mark Twain on libraries...
Ticket to the British Museum reading room
18 September 1872
Several days after his visit to the museum, Clemens mentioned it in a speech: "The Library at the British Museum I find particularly astounding. I have read there hours together & hardly made an impression on it. I revere that library. It is the author's friend. I don't care how mean a book is, it always takes one copy. And then, every day that author goes there to gaze at that book, & is encouraged to go on in the good work. And what a touching sight it is of a Saturday afternoon to see the poor toil-worn clergymen gathered together in that vast reading-room cabbaging sermons for Sunday!"

Good reads folks .
I got to drive "Miss Vicky" the art car to the mall today . I Love this car, it rides like a buckboard, and steers like a Radio Flyer Red Wagon. And it is totally illegal , no seat belts , no windshield, no inspection sticker, no current plates.
We tried to put gas in it, and it all ran out on the ground. The thing has a boat gas tank in the truck.

I looked real hard, and I saw Tiny Tim there at the mall, pining after Miss Vicky.
CBob, hey, send me a picture of the camera van.

It is 3:10 am here pt. There is no new thread, and the last post I have is from Dexter @ 1:55am. I am here because I couldn't sleep and decided a few minutes of cnn and trail mix might help me nod off. I have hit what is called on my computer the refresh button .
If Dexter posted at 1:55, that is10:55 my time, right? My time is4 hours later now with no posts at all. I'm not complaining but trying to figure out if I'm crazy. Actually, I'm trying to figure out where I'm going wrong.

Fascinating article in NYT today. This sounds so much like VietNam.
