Since none of the good guys were harmed in the saving of a maritime hostage, surely the world is again safe for pirate jokes:
-
What does Obama give to evil pirates?
A shot in the dARRRk!!! - What do pirates now fear the most?
The U.S. NARRRVY!!! - Why do pirates hate seals?
They're ShARRRp Shooters!!! - What happened to the pirate who messed with the USS Bainbridge? Hoisted by his own PetARRRd!!!
- What will the hostage-taking pirates be missing next year? MARRRdi Gras!!!

Craig
We have a blue front amazon parrot who by the name of Tootsie. Don't let the name fool you. he is one mean SOB. He wishes to be assured that no parrots were harmed in the creation of this post. And he told me to tell everybody that "I don't need no F#@%ing cracker either, so shove the F@#%ing parrot jokes"
For all of our sakes I assured him that we would respect his wishes.

To top off the miracles today, my papa owl finally showed up this morning, first time all long weekend that he did. I even sat out watching and waiting. I had resigned myself to thinking that something may have happened.
When the sun finally came out this morning I went out in the boat. I had one of my river rats friends along in case there was any problems on her first workout in years. It was smooth sailing and it was beautiful out there. I was high as a kite.
Then as we were creeping thru one the scenic little back cuts, my cellphone rang. It was my stepfather's work hand. He had to bring him back to the hospital because he was weak and his blood pressure was too low. Damn those Drs. who over medicate their patients. His Shrink has him on enough drugs to kill an old man. Shrinks are famous for that.
That was pretty much the time when the blue corn miracle ran out of steam. Arrrgh!

I've been musing on the rumor that an appointment of Caroline Kennedy is 'unacceptable' to the Vatican. Of course, this is just rumor mongering, but a few thoughts come to my mind.
1. a. What if, in the years between 1933 and 1990, the soviet union had demanded that we send a dialectical materialist to be our ambassador ?
b. What if Germany1933 - 1941 demanded that our ambassador believe in 'aryan supremecy' ?
c. What if Japan would only accept an ambassador woul believed that the Emperor was a god ?
d. What if the only acceptable ambassador to Saudi Arabia would be a Hanbalite ?
e. What if we sent the Vatican's Ambassador home with the message that in the future we will only accept an ambassador who believes in freedom of speech ?
2. IF the rumor is true, here is a short selection of potential Ambassadors to the Vatican City:
a. Rev. Rick Warren
b. Rev. Matthew Fox
c. Rabbi Stacey Offner
You might have some names to add to this list.
Of course, it is ONLY a rumor.

Saint Peter Claver
The son of a Catalonian farmer, was born at Verdu, in 1581; he died 8 September, 1654. He obtained his first degrees at the University of Barcelona. At the age of twenty he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Tarragona. While he was studying philosophy at Majorca in 1605, Alphonsus Rodriguez, the saintly door-keeper of the college, learned from God the future mission of his young associate, and thenceforth never ceased exhorting him to set out to evangelize the Spanish possessions in America. Peter obeyed, and in 1610 landed at Cartagena, where for forty-four years he was the Apostle of the negro slaves. Early in the seventeenth century the masters of Central and South America afforded the spectacle of one of those social crimes which are entered upon so lightly. They needed labourers to cultivate the soil which they had conquered and to exploit the gold mines. Thenatives being physically incapable of enduring the labours of the mines, it was determined to replace them with negroes brought from Africa. The coasts of Guinea, the Congo, and Angola became the market for slave dealers, to whom native petty kings sold their subjects and their prisoners. By its position in the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena became the chief slave-mart of the New World. A thousand slaves landed there each month. They were bought for two, and sold for 200 écus. Though half the cargo might die, the trade remained profitable. Neither the repeated censures of the pope, nor those of Catholic moralists could prevail against this cupidity. The missionaries could not suppress slavery, but only alleviate it, and no one worked more heroically than Peter Claver.
Trained in the school of Père Alfonso de Sandoval, a wonderful missionary, Peter declared himself "the slave of the negroes forever", and thenceforth his life was one that confounds egotism by its superhuman charity. Although timid and lacking in self-confidence, he became a daring and ingenious organizer. Every month when the arrival of the negroes was signalled, Claver went out to meet them on the pilot's boat, carrying food and delicacies. The negroes, cooped up in the hold, arrived crazed and brutalized by suffering and fear. Claver went to each, cared for him, and showed him kindness, and made him understand that henceforth he was his defender and father. He thus won theirgood will. To instruct so many speaking different dialects, Claver assembled at Cartagena a group of interpreters of various nationalities, of whom he made catechists. While the slaves were penned up at Cartagena waiting to be purchased and dispersed, Claver instructed and baptized them in the Faith. On Sundays during Lent he assembled them, inquired concerning their needs, and defended them against their oppressors. This work caused Claver severe trials, and the slave merchants were not his only enemies. The Apostle was accused of indiscreet zeal, and of having profaned the Sacraments by giving them to creatures who scarcely possessed a soul. Fashionable women of Cartagena refused to enter the churches where Father Claver assembled his negroes. The saint's superiors were often influenced by the many criticisms which reached them. Nevertheless, Claver continued his heroic career, accepting all humiliations and adding rigorouspenances to his works of charity. Lacking the support of men, the strength of God was given him. He became the prophet and miracle worker of New Granada, the oracle of Cartagena, and all were convinced that often God would not have spared the city save for him. During his life he baptized and instructed in the Faith more than 300,000 negroes. He was beatified 16 July, 1850, Pius IX, and canonized 15 January, 1888, by Leo XIII. His feast is celebrated on the ninth of September. On 7 July, 1896, he was proclaimed the special patron of all the Catholic missions among the negroes. Alphonsus Rodriguez was canonized on the same day as Peter Claver.

"Of course it's hard not to link Warren's sudden disappearance to the firestorm over his claim, on CNN's "Larry King Live," that he had never campaigned for California's Prop. 8, which abolished gay marriage. It wasn't difficult to immediately find press statements and even video featuring Warren touting the measure. I don't know what Warren was thinking. Gay leaders and Christian right leaders pounced on Warren's obvious lie."

I have been following the same stories (most) as you, have,,but this one is a little diff,,,I think that it will be definitive,,,(the findings) and match history with it once and for all,,,if they can see,,past history,,they can help see whats ahead of us,,,I became interested in ice coring cos of evolution,,,it also proved the atmosphere (air quality) during the dinosaur extinction,,,(strike that we still have XR around ) but they can tell a lot of stories (ice cores) about the past,,,as do the dried up oceans-- that are mountains,,and show the evolution of species of fish,,,,and us going back bill,,,of years...I save that article to me doc's,,,lets see where it goes.

CB,,,,,,here is what is diff....the nay sayers that you talk about ,,,won't be able to challenge this imo
Their model of Antarctica's ice sheets includes forces that most other models leave out, such as underside melting by ocean currents and rapid acceleration and thinning of glaciers when ice shelves collapse. In a Nature paper last month, they show that their model successfully reproduces the sequence of ice sheet collapses and expansions seen over the last 5 million years in the Andrill cores (vol 458, p 332).
They'll soon run their model into the future and they expect it to predict more rapid ice loss than previous models have. "I think that the numbers over the next 100 years or so are going to raise a few eyebrows," DeConto warns.
According to the Andrill cores, each collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet happened over 1000 to 3000 years, seemingly placing any crisis far into the future. But even that slow collapse could translate into 10 to 50 centimetres of sea level rise per century. Combine that with increased ice loss from Greenland and the sea level could rise to 50 or 100 centimetres by 2100 - the same amount predicted by another group at a climate change conference in Copenhagen last month.

Just had a nice video chat with our grandson up in Michigan--the one who turned 21-last week. He related a coming of age experience that most of us will relate to.
He and a couple of buddies went to a local restaurant for dinner. Jasper ordered a beer. And, for the first time in his life, he wasn't carded.
He asked the server why. She told him that he looked like the kind of person who wouldn't order something unless he was of legal age.
To make a long story short, Jasper ended up begging her to card him which she finally did, albeit under duress..

One of my all-time faves, dead at 54 as reported here earlier.

2 things about the story ...........
I loved any story about Antarctica since 1958 ............
And I tripped pipe in cold weather. That lab is running 24 hrs a day.
Which means , that rig is running 3 "towers" , you don't stand a shift on a drilling rig. You work the "morning tower", the "day tower", or the "evening tower". Drilling core samples , you drill a little bit ........ you pull the core barrel. You retrieve the sample. You run back in the hole you drill a little bit. You make the trip out of the hole.
Lot's of trippin' pipe.
I used to drive around Wyoming in the dark , looking for drills that weren't making the trip. If they were drillin', if they were makin' hole ....
I rode up on my motorcycle, and sold them T - Shirts.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota court confirmed Monday that Democrat Al Franken won the most votes in his 2008 Senate race against Republican Norm Coleman, who immediately announced plans to appeal the decision.
.......................... After a statewide recount and seven-week trial, Franken stands 312 votes ahead. He gained more votes from the election challenge than Coleman, the candidate who brought the legal action.

It’s would be hard to agree with the lawlessness of the Somali “pirates”, but my leftest friend emailed this story which happened to be linked with Huffpo.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/johann-hari/you-are-being-lied-to-abo_b_155147.html
If you believe any of it, it seems all this lawless area is ripe for plunder of it’s fish and the dumping of heavy metals and nuclear waste by countries willing to do so. Leaving the fishermen of the area to go broke and hungry and turn to other means plus sickening and killing off the coastal inhabitants. quien sabe?
