Dumping his Republican membership card makes Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter the new face of moderate GOPers who are dismayed by their party's dependency on its right wing.
Specter's conversion to becoming a Democrat could well be a tipping point toward Republicans becoming a regional party. Its base in the South could be all that's left for now.
But it is a base that holds little promise for the GOP's future. The party's coalition of largely white, male, Southern, evangelical Christian and rural voters appears to be shrinking.

KGC....
even if he does vote with the Republicans..... it's still his right to change party affiliation.... and until we see evidence of how he will be voting.... one can only speculate.....
actually as someone not affiliated with either party.... I feel saddened that a moderate no longer feels comfortable in the Republican party..... even when the Democrats were at their low point, we didn't see them jumping over to the other ship.... this does not bode well for the GOP......

As an occasional grassy knoller and Democrat, there just seems something off in having the architect of the Magic Bullet theory, not only back in the party, but quoting the victim of said bullet, in explaining the reason for his move...

crackers - He will have still have to run as a Dem next year, so he has to prove himself for awhile. If he can get elected as a Dem, then he can be the skunk in our woodpile. But I don't think he has any hidden agenda; he's probably just trying to lead by example so the GOP doesn't completely disintegrate.

I have nothing but respect for Spector changing parties - he ain't necessarily my kind of Democrat, but I'm almost as sure he's not McConnel's kind of Republican. I say good for him - now he's just got to win an election as a Dem - which in PA shouldn't exactly be a Herculean feat.

Re: Specter:
There are obvious short-term benefits. Specter is going to be much more likely to support Obama's proposals, e.g., healthcare, in order to show his stripes as a Dem and ensure that he can win a primary.
But there is a larger point. I am sure Specter realized that is going to be difficult to go as far right as necessary to win a GOP primary - and then attempt to try and get back to the center for the election.
More evidence that the current posture of the GOP is outside of the mainstream.
To me - it proves the BS of the conservative "rationalization" about last Nov.'s election. They love to say they lost because the nominated the "liberal" John McCain. And what they really need to do is get back to the base, i.e., the Palin hard right...
Bullsh*t!. I think McCain would have done far better if he stayed true to his moderate beliefs - didn't cowtow to the hardliners and engage in all that negative campaigning.
Let's not forget - he lost the independents and moderate Republicans. The hard liners were not going to vote Obama under any circumstances...

I don't know why anybody would believe Spector's BS any more now, just because he is switching to the democratic party. He is one of the most self-serving politicians in the Senate, he just thinks he has a better shot at re-election as a democrat than he would in a brutal primary on the republican slate. Most republicans are probably saying good riddance.

Being "one of the most self-serving politicians in the Senate" is like the difference between milk that is 6 months old vs. 6 years old. That is, a whole lotta nothing - both still stink!
But if you are a fan of the Democratic agenda that Obama (and HRC) campaigned on - then you should be a fan of this move.
Because now it is in Specter's self-interest to support Obama's agenda in order to position himself to win a democratic primary. And win over some of the skeptics...like you.

Bow, oh, come off it yourself. You act as if this is something new for Specter. He changed to the Repug party after running and getting elected as a dem as prosecutor way back when. What's new for him is a 21 point poll deficit against a potential primary opponent - which appears to be growing - and the possibility that by switching parties he might save his seat, to say nothing of having the potential to be in a position to shape legislation instead of just block it. he new era was Obama's promise - marked by a solid majority in the Senate and House. I don't recall any repugs taking that position.
And if Specter does believe he's voting more in line with dems than repugs these days, and Steele says he is (and far be it from me to dispute his or Specter's statements to that effect) how is that not consistent with more rather than less integrity in government?

Pogo, don't confuse things with logic.

Pogo,
I suspect _many_ Republicans are part of the party because of a strong entrepreneurial bias and their belief that a rising sea lifts all boats. (As distinguished from the bankrupt trickle-downism characteristic of neo-conservatism.)
Moderate Democrats' challenge is to make them voting members of the Democratic party even if they stumble over the words, I'm a Democrat. If they aren't able to achieve that feat, this millennial transformation may last a whole 20-months.

If Specter had any real core values instead of just being in it for himself, he would make a serious attempt at reforming the Republican party. He hasn't and the fact that he didn't will detract from his legacy. Regardless of the current status of the Republican party, I seriously doubt that it will vanish from the scene. Things ebb and flow in our country, as anyone who has studied American History knows, so they will reinvent themselves; probably as a more libertarian model.

Bowmanc,
How the devil does one go about reforming a party? Take the Democratic Party as an example. In the Spring of last year there was tremendous frustration because well meaning party members couldn't get the party leadership to obey promulgated rules. I expect the equivalent thing happens in the Republican party.
People in charge of running these establishments are simply not amenable for reform until someone literally has a stake in hand pointed at the established leader's heart.
Posted by: Flatus
| April 28, 2009 6:32 PM
Flatus,
You, probably better than anyone commenting on this blog knows that you reform things by having a vision and showing leadership. Obviously it is lacking in the current Republican Party especially with cretins like Arlin.
Posted by: Bowmanc
| April 28, 2009 6:38 PM
The only way reform comes to a political party is by losing repeatedly. That's what brought about the DLC, which began moving the Dems toward the center, and led to the nomination of Bill Clinton. Moderates are such a minority now in the Republican party that reformers have about as much chance as Martin Luther did at changing the Catholic church from within.
The wheel will turn, but it will take a while out of power. It could take less time than many believe. Remember the disarray of the Dems during the 1980s?

Sure Jamie. The evolved one is enjoying herself as I wait on her hand and foot. I was out cleaning up after my 4 wonderful days off. That pic is one of the little cuts we took on one of our swamp tours this morning. It will be hard to go back to work tomorrow. Hard to leave the fun and hard to return to piles of charts and sick people.
The evolved one pissed me off last night when I paused her movie because my other sis called to tell me there was a tornado warning in the area. The evolved one believes that her reality is what she wants to believe it is. I believe in getting my ass in a safe place because my reality may not be as lucky as hers.

As a former DEM Staffer who found Specter to be a reliable GOP cosponsor for various legislative projects, I welcome Senator to the Democratic Party.
Specter is reliably pro-choice and took on the gun lobby with the Armed Career Criminal Act, which he cosponsored with my former boss, Ron Wyden. He won't be with the DEM line on all things, but he will join on some of the good things. Given his upcoming race in 2010, I think Specter will vote more with the DEMs

Posted by: Divalicias

and yes it is cool that Specter joined the Dems. It may just be a matter of time before most of them jump ship. ARRRRgh.
But to more important matters. My corn is trying to make a come back. I already emailed C-bob so not to get in trouble again. The little nubs grew a couple of inches after the two inch rain we got last night with the passing tornado. Unfortunately two of the nubs were gnawed down again but because of the cayenne pepper I put on them the, as of yet unknown, creature
quit after two. Probably went for a beer.
I bought some of that Repel that Chloe mentioned and circled the corn patch. Will let you know if that works.

Jamie and Sea - I posted a comment on the page and submitted it but don't think it took.
Bowmanc - I don't think Specter needs to sacrifice himself for the Republican party. He's been telling them for awhile how he feels and they've been letting him know they don't want him. As to reforming the party? He doesn't live for the party. He wants to be involved in government and the only way he can is to switch parties, and the dems are much more inclusive than the repubs want to be.
I for one am delighted he switched parties. My first positive impression of him was when he was tghe only repub who stood and applauded something Bii said in a state of the union speech. Of course, all the dems stood and applauded, and there was Arlen all by his lonesome smack dab in the middle of his group.
He didn't cower either, or sit down quickly. I knew right then I liked something about him. Remember, I'm an independent.
I don't think for a minute he will change his voting unless possibly some minor points. He is right - the party has changed on him but he hasn't changed with it, so as he is, he ain't a conservative.
Jamie - Oldsea is right about you. You are a force to be reckoned with and as such, I'm almight glad we agree on just about everything.
Carol - I'm LOVING your pix!

OSH and Jamie -- I invited a bunch of people to the Facebook page, which has the website on it.
OSH -- Bruce Springsteen and Tom Hanks are really good friends. Maybe if we can get to him somehow, he will carry it to Hanks. Meanwhile keep working on the Spielberg angle. Also let's look at the members of Congress -- besides Kennedy and Kerry. What about rest of the Massachusetts delegation? Ed Markey? I sent the Facebook page to friends who are still on this HIll. It will get done -- only a matter of time now. But I do know .... time is critical. I will keep thinking on this and adding what I can to the effort.
Signing off until morning,

Specter to bring balance ???
Whart he'd better bring is a "Yessir, whatever you say, sir !" attitude, if he wants help from his colleagues in the Dem Primary. He had better be a promoter of the program. He's got just as much chance of getting help from his fellow senators as he is co-operative with them, because 5 republican senators whose seats are up for election in 2010 are retiring, and 4 more are in trouble. The Dems won't need specter in Nov 2010, so he'd better make himself well-beloved now.
And, what other job can an 80 year old with cancer, but no team spirit, find ?

But Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), a fellow moderate, didn't seem surprised. On the national level, she says, "you haven't certainly heard warm encouraging words of how [the GOP] views moderates. Either you are with us or against us."
"Ultimately we're heading to having the smallest political tent in history they way things are unfolding," Snowe said. "We should have learned from the 2006 election, which I was a party of. I happened to win with 74 percent of the vote in a blue-collar state, but no one asked me, 'How did you do it?' Seems to me that would have been the first question that would have come from the Republican Party to find out so we could avoid further losses."
