Firdt of all:
That sound you hear in NOT Lincoln spinning in his grave. He's trying to dig deeper and get further away from the GOP Clowns. Who's failing???
Next:
Palin, McCain, Jindal, McConnell, Limbaugh, Hannitty, Vitter, Boehner, Steele, Bachmann, etc, etc. This group equates best to Howdy Doody's Peanut Gallery:
Off to the side, making lots of noise, but not really part of the show!

And now back to the real world -
NEW YORK — Jon Stewart hammered Jim Cramer and his network, CNBC, in their anticipated face-off on "The Daily Show," repeatedly chastising the "Mad Money" host for putting entertainment above journalism.
"I understand that you want to make finance entertaining, but it's not a ... game," Stewart told Cramer,

Stewart said he and Cramer are both snake-oil salesman, only "The Daily Show" is labeled as such. He claimed CNBC shirked its journalistic duty by believing corporate lies, rather than being an investigative "powerful tool of illumination." And he alleged CNBC was ultimately in bed with the businesses it covered _ that regular people's stocks and 401Ks were "capitalizing on your adventure."

50 days does not make or break an administration or a political party. Obama's success in less dependent on the Republican party than in his ability to make the government improve the economy. I'm in a wait & see mode with respect to the end result of this stimilus package. The Republicans can't really do anything but be an opposition party right now, however, I wouldn't write them off just yet. The American public is fickle and it only takes a few percentage points to swing power from one party the the other.
It is ironic though that in a sense what is bad for business is good for the Republicans, because if the economy is not improving it hurts Obama. It is the exact opposite of the traditional what is good for business is good for Republicans.

"Try Camels for thirty days..."
http://www.tobaccovideos.com/videos.php?brand=Camel
Right after the War, Camels used to send scads of cigarettes to veterans' hospitals. Sunday evenings when Jack Benny was on the radio, they would always announce where "this week's gift Camels" were going.
I thought it was all intriguing. Why in the world would someone not smoke camels? For real men, it was a choice between Lucky Strikes and Camels.

Sturg, started reading and recalling from those old ads. Damn, I smoked a lot of cigarettes. I totaled them up one day and it was something like 1,000.042,000 of them.
Just looking at those ads started a craving. Been smoke free for 10-years 5-months and 13-days. No way I'm going to screw-up this quit.
Every once and a while when I open one of my old books, the 'fragrance' of the tobacco that permeated them will come wafting out. Most unsettling.

Obama's Poll Numbers Are Falling to Earth
"It is simply wrong for commentators to continue to focus on President Barack Obama's high levels of popularity, and to conclude that these are indicative of high levels of public confidence in the work of his administration. Indeed, a detailed look at recent survey data shows that the opposite is most likely true. The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced."

This is probably a bad time to post this, because it's not aimed at anyone here this morning. But it's been building up for a while, and I feel I must say it and get it off my chest.
It seems to me, that the constant GOP bashing here is just a way of making sure none of our Republican friends ever feel welcome here. I am not and never have been (or thought of being) a Republican. But we're supposedly not supposed to 'generalize' here, and when we ridicule everyone that has different belief's than us, we're turning TM into a club of 'only like minds welcome'. Ping and Jax dare not speak their mind. Why not just argue point by point, and quit pretending that the Democrats have never made a mistake. Hate Bush, but stop trying to tie every Republican or different minded person to him. It's just another way of getting personal.

Ping has been around a long while and TIR and mqw among others. The far right branch doesn't last long, but the less idealogical do just fine at holding their position in space. We do have a pretty far left contingent, but the majority probably span pretty widely over the middle.
Most of the time this is just a fun space. If anyone gets insulted, it is probably a good idea just to ask about intent. You came in at the height of the "late unpleasantness" and we are still finding out way back to the old feeling of talking about anything with anyone.

Chloe,
I undertand the make-up of the site and except it as such. It's no surprise that I tend to be conservative but mainly on fiscal issues. I'm very much a small gov't guy.
I don't have an issue with anyone challenging one of our elected leaders policies but I seriously dislike the constant finger pointing and disrespect shown them especially the Office of the President. I think it cheapens everything we stand for.

At this stage of the economy, I tend to find WSJ somewhat suspect given their pro corporate slant. Being written by Rasmussen which trends right somewhat compounds that idea. There was some verbal playing around with the Gallup numbers as well. Disagreement with an idea is not the same as disagreement with a person. As with Renee, I have several Republican friends. In fact one of the most extreme called yesterday just to chat because he likes to hear what the other side is saying from someone he trusts.
Here is a recent Gallup on how Republicans and Democrats differ on the trust issue:

chloe,
It's always interesting to see one set of pollsters reinterpret the results of a competitor's results and analysis of their own results. Somehow I don't think I'll ever read a WSJ article analyzing Obama's poll results positively. This paragraph from that article caught my eye.
"Finally, what probably accounts for a good measure of the confidence and support the Obama administration has enjoyed is the fact that they are not Republicans. Virtually all Americans, more than eight in 10, blame Republicans for the current economic woes, and the only two leaders with lower approval ratings than Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are Republican leaders Mitch McConnell and John Boehner."
Numbers are numbers, and people can argue about them til the cows come home - but that is one point I happen to agree with Rasmussen and Schoen on. Let's face facts - the depth of the economic problems Bush handed off to Obama and he is trying to find ways to deal with - and that are directly impacting the participants in polls - are not comparable to the mild recession Bush had to deal with. Cheery bullshit about strong fundamentals and "put more money back into the pockets of Americans" isn't an approach remotely sufficient to address this one. The fact that Obama's numbers are even a bare plurality is a miracle.
And one thing that Ol' Scott neglects to mention is that the difference in HIS poll between those who strongly approve/disapprove of Obama's perfomance is 9 points - 50% higher than Gallup's.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll
And his approval index has dropped pretty dramatically since the inauguration - but again, who would this surprise considering the deepening economic backdrop he is working in front of.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/obama_approval_index_history
Rasmussen is a victim of his trade - which is built on snapshots reflecting reality - and of course they only do when you look at many of them.

I try to attack both sides equally. Let me know if I'm being one sided. :)
The Democrats are already showing signs of idiocy. First it was Max Baucus talking about taxing health benefits. Now we've got the conservative Dem senatorial group intent on splitting the vote.
The mind set inside the loopy-way constantly amazes me.

Fact is, it's easy to do when party that is not in power is voting virtually as a block against every policy floated to address the problems they created. It is good to be reminded when I'm being insufferable, but this is a political site, and I do have respectful and interesting (for me anyway) discussions with Ping and Jax - and even with mqw, With all of them I try to stay on the topic and rebut their positions from my perspective. Now as for the Boners, McConnells, McCains and Palins of the world - they're public figures and I consider them fair game - and I expect to be challenged in my criticism and ridicule of them and their positions.

POPEYES LIKES TRAIL MIX
well it gets weirder still, now Popeyes on Twitter is into the action -- urging me to switch from KFC, so to make peace I said nice things about their biscuits and spicy recipe. their response:
"PopeyesChicken@craig_crawford Thanks for the kind words! Trail Mix is well done, although I must say I love the left wing and the right wing equally well!"

There was a Popeye's just a stone's throw from one of my places when I was in grad school - and it was really good fried chicken. I can't be sure, after all my memory is worse than my memory, but I believe it was before KFC intro'd extra crispy - and the Popeye's was extra crispy and cajun spiced - a delightfully deadly combination.

Craig asked for a joke, and my buddy Solar sent me one.
Thanks, Solar !
BEST DRUNK STORY OF THE MONTH...
A drunken man walks into a biker bar, sits down at
the bar and orders a drink.
Looking around, he sees three men sitting at a
corner table. He gets up, staggers to the table,
leans over, looks the biggest, meanest, biker in
the face and says: 'I went by your grandma's house
today and I saw her in the hallway buck naked.
Man, she is one fine looking woman!'
The biker looks at him and doesn't say a word. His
buddies are confused, because he is one bad biker
and would fight at the drop of a hat.
The drunk leans on the table again and says: 'I got
it on with your grandma and she is good, the best I
ever had!'
The biker's buddies are starting to get
really mad
but the biker still says nothing.
The drunk leans on the table one more time and says,
'I'll tell you something else, boy, your grandma
liked it!'
At this point the biker stands up, takes the drunk
by the shoulders looks him square in the eyes and
says....................

Last week GM was warning of imminent bankruptcy as was citigroup both angling for more federal money. There was talk about the need to break up Citi and BAC.
This week Citi is making a profit and today says the won't need any more fed money. GM say basically the same thing As does BAC.
So were things so bad last week , or are they that good this week.
Inquiring minds want to know.

"...Over a four-year period (1979-82), the U.S. economy's output barely increased. Since 1950, there had been nothing like that. Unemployment peaked in 1982 near 11 percent-a figure that, a few years earlier, would have been widely judged inconceivable. ... The number of business failures in 1982 (24,908) was nearly 50 percent higher than in any other year since World War II, and it would double to 52,078 by 1984. From 1979 to 1983, farm income declined almost 50 percent."

Hey everyone! I'm not worried about the WSJ article about Obama. One WSJ article on lower numbers does not a poll dive make. My Schwan's man thinks Obama is doing a great job. Schwan's man is a good ol' boy from rural Virginia. He just told me he's glad we have a prez who can do more than one thing at a time because we have got a lot of work to do.
Maybe we all need to Adopt a GOP, you know, bring them here, pet them a little, rub their furrowed brows, listen to their grumbling woes about losing 18 percent of their wealth, soothe their fears of revenue increases and capital gains, cluck over their frustrations with regulations. The GOP are having such a hard time these days, it's disturbing. Where is the in-your-loser-librul-face bravado? Where is the sloganeering? Where are they? We should send out a search party because there is nothing worse for mid-terms than a bunch of angrily simmering neo-cons grumbling in the the dark corners.

Not getting the joke. Reminds me of my favorite "Cheers" conversation. Cliff's ex-girlfriend returned to Boston and told him that she was pregnant and he was the Father. Cliif and Norm had a talk about his situation:
Cliff: I want you all to know that I'm gonna do the right thing. I'm gonna marry her. I wouldn't want you all to think any less of me.
Norm: Oh, I don't think that's possible, Cliffy.
(getting sentimental, Cliff puts his hand on Norm's shoulder and says) "Thank you, big guy."

ROME -- An archaeological dig near Venice has unearthed the 16th-century remains of a woman with a brick stuck between her jaws - evidence, experts say, that she was believed to be a vampire. The unusual burial is thought to be the result of an ancient vampire-slaying ritual. It suggests the legend of the mythical bloodsucking creatures was tied to medieval ignorance of how diseases spread and what happens to bodies after death, experts said.

David Horsey's post on the death of his paper -
Death watch
We are closing in on the last day anyone can step forward to buy the P-I.
Unless there is some wildly philanthropic or simply lunatic billionaire out there who wants to take on some guaranteed multi-million-dollar debt for the foreseeable future, no buyer is likely to turn up. As a result, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, as it has been constituted for the last 146 years, will shut down sometime in the next few days. The exact day has not yet been determined but, like a terminal patient, the outcome is certain.

Awww CBob. I did the vampire earlier. Absolutely fascinating the lengths that fear can take human beings. Part of the cause for the Jewish pogroms of the period was that due to certain Kosher laws, fewer Jews contracted the plague ... obviously in league with the devil and in need of burning.

I was talking to a friend yesterday and we were running over the idea of the NY Times becoming the national Sunday paper. Everyone who loves NYT lives for Sunday. Why not become a national paper with major cities printing an insert for their area to put into the fold before distribution.
It would allow for local reporters and issues plus investigative reporting in a way that could compete with with the magazine weeklies.
Saves newspapers and gives us all something wonderful to read over coffee for the rest of the week.

I think Obama is doing as good a job as anyone could be. I've been disappointed in a couple of things, but I suspect that I would have been in Hillary's case as well. The difference is that if it had been Hillary I'd be bringing up the things I disagreed with. I don't feel comfortable doing that with Obama, not after what went on here during the primary.

1. It's not Cramer's fault people take his dumb advice. Caveat Emptor.
2. If Jon Stewart is your most trusted name in news, you're an idiot. He'll tell you the same thing.
3. Let the blog of which we shall not speak whither or thrive on its own accord. No more free plugs. If you're gonna spar with them on other sites, might as well let them in here.

I am so sorry everyone if I have started something here. That whole thing this morning had more to do with me and my mood than it did about anyone else here. I think everyone here is great. It was one little thing I was talking about. Generalizing. Nothing more. Everything here has been going in a good direction. I love it here.
Please, no one take what I said as a complaint. It wasn't. It was me ranting about a personal thought or feeling I was having, and it probably is too bad I said it. But then, I did what I usually do. Let loose and regret it later.

The thing that fascinated me during the primary was that I was participating in some med tests at Vanderbilt through a lot of it. Repeatedly answering the same "Do you still beat your wife" question is a lost cause. We don't know who feels free to post. If they want to they will. If they don't they won't. We have absolutely no control over that. It is all in the past. Beating it into the ground won't change that.

Hi Chloe
I have been so busy with work.I also have been screwed up by DLS time and sleeping till 700am instead of my usual 600am so I haven't been reading and posting some in the mornings.I want to tell you that comment you posted earlier was priceless.I think you are right to point out that generalizing and holding all Republicans responsible for Bush isn't the right thing to do! I thank you because I do that sometimes and I need to keep it in check.A long time ago you pointed that same thing out to me regarding religion and when i go to do it I think about it and stop.I'm sorry your a little down, how's little Emma?I wish I could make you smile because you sure make me smile often enough..

Julia -- You were an early Obama supporter? But you seem so...nice! (LOL)
Chloe -- I was thinking the same thing about your GOP welcoming post -- I really was worried about the lack of GOP posters here so I went out and tried to recruit an old friend -- who used be a wide-open liberal -- and now is so GOP he's joined the Rush Limburger fan club. It upsets me to see such an intelligent man, who I really like, mindlessly spout GOP talking points, so I though he could use the stimulation of the TM -- which I assured him was an intelligent blog. (Hah!) Anyway he said he didn't want to come and argue his points. I still encouraged him to come because I truly believe that when we all think alike no one thinks at all.
I went on the other blog the other night - and I just didn't see too much diversity of opinion there.
I'm sad that Sheila isn't here, although we stay in touch on FB.
For the record I think Obama and the Obama family are lovely. I'm hoping for a second term.

Thanks Tony, Little Emma's doing great. And I love her so much.
Tony, I'm not down. I was just in a bad mood. There's a difference. And you know by now, that I always have trouble not saying exactly what I think. That gets me in more than my fair share of trouble. But it doesn't stop me from doing it over and over again. I don't want to talk about me anymore. Let's just move on beyond this and get back to normal.

| March 13, 2009 6:49 PM
Regarding the so-called persecution of the Obama supporters due solely to their political affiliation, I would just like to point out that A. Obama won the Presidency as well as the popular vote, and B. currently polls with an approval rating in the low 60% area. That means Obama supporters are in the majority. Maybe not here, but generally.

Not to mention Bob Hope's final sendoff: "A vitamin pill on legs."
That specific broadcast is awesome. It also featured Lana Turner frying a steak in a pan so the sound of the sizzle could be heard by the troops overseas, as well as Judy Garland singing an incredible version of "Over The Rainbow"...just can't find the other things right now.

OSH - Not sure if it is yours, but here is an Irish Soda Bread
Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
4 to 4 1/2 cups flour
2 Tbsp sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 Tbsp butter
1 cup raisins
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 cups buttermilk
Directions
1 Preheat oven to 425°. Sift together 4 cups of flour, the sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl.
2 Using a pastry cutter or two knives, work butter into flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal, then stir in raisins.
3 Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add beaten egg and buttermilk to well and mix in with a wooden spoon until dough is too stiff to stir. Dust hands with a little flour, then gently knead dough in the bowl just long enough to form a rough ball. If the dough is too sticky to work with, add in some more flour. Do not overknead! Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and shape into a round loaf.
4 Transfer dough to a large, lightly greased cast-iron skillet or a baking sheet. Using a serrated knife, score top of dough about 1/2'' deep in an "X" shape. Transfer to oven and bake until bread is golden and bottom sounds hollow when tapped with a knife, about 35-45 minutes.
(If you use a cast iron pan, it may take a little longer as it takes longer for the pan to heat up than a baking sheet.) Check for doneness also by inserting a long, thin skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, it's done.
If the top is getting too dark while baking, tent the bread with some aluminum foil.
If you use a cast iron skillet to cook the bread in the oven, be very careful when you take the pan out. It's easy to forget that the handle is extremely hot. Cool the handle with an ice cube, or put a pot holder over it.
Transfer bread to a rack to let cool briefly. Serve bread warm, at room temperature, or sliced and toasted.

Just a severe depression Solar. In my off time I have been crying while playing freecell. It my form of mental masterbation even though not as satisfing as the other.
A couple of weeks ago I finally couldn't stand it anymore and cashed out of a mutual fund I never really I wanted to invest in but my banker told me I needed to because I wouldn't make enough in savings. I lost close to $100,000, many years of savings. I wanted to get out months ago but they said no, I won't lose it until I pull it out. I finally couldn't watch it drop anymore so I cashed out.
To top that off this week while getting my tax stuff together I got a 1099 stating I had capital gains reinvestment that I have to pay taxes on. I have to pay taxes on money that no longer exists. Life is not fair! I certainly have sympathy for those Bernie victims. They lost millions and paid millions in taxes on money they didn't even have. They can't get that back either.
My heart is filled with hate for everyone involved with all this crap and that is not a good place to be. I have even had some vicious Bernie fantasies because he represents all the bad guys. I badly need some owl or fishing therapy but it is too cold and wet to go to the camp. I keep telling myself I still have a job and a home so buck up sucker.

The B man never really went after me probably because I wasn't a tough enough opponent. He mainly went after the strong personalities here, the tough competitors. In a way you could have taken it as a sort of a compliment even though his insults often hit below the belt. I think he went after those he was jealous of. IMHO

ct, some good accountants got people an offer in compromise after the tech bubble burst. A lot of people have exercised options that were under water. may be worth talking to a good tax lawyer about.
solar, i think what i want is someone who thinks different, which both obama and paul seemed to do. traditional Rs and Ds are the same except for their social activist outlook. we'll see how much obama can get done. but i would think it's necessary to get a third party in congress before a third party president, so something can actually get done. what do you think?

Reading this blog is starting to remind me of sitting in front of the TV as an adolescent and happily watching endless reruns of countless "Gilligan's Island" episodes I had already seen a million times before.
Remember the one where the Professor figured out how to tap into the Intercontinental Telephone Cable that had somehow randomly washed up into the lagoon? Gilligan's only responsibility in that epsiode -- and let me emphasize the word ONLY -- was to man the pedal-powered coconut phone long enough for the Professor to repair the cable to the point where communication with outside civilization would be possible. But NO! Gilligan couldn't even handle that minor task. He started looking at either Ginger or Mary Ann's ass (I can't remember which, because I never decided which of those two was the hottest) and before you knew it, he let the Intercontinental Telephone Cable wash back out to sea.
Goddam Gilligan. As far as I'm concerned, he should be serving time right now with Bernie Madoff. And Skipper should be beating the hell out of both of them with his cap.

First,,,Don1 is right,,,an offer of Compromise,,,is just a form of making a deal with the IRS,,I helped one of my workers fill out paper work ,,,I fired him first ,,,to show that he had no income in,,,,and he had to show very little in savings ,,,,we offered to pay $ 100.00 of 7,000 they said he owed,,,,the interest is what was killing him,,,,,end the IRS,,,a flat income tax,,,and a flat sales tax,,,is what we need to stop all of this
Don
Could not agree with you more,,,,,I really like Paul's personal history,,,,there is nothing in it ,,that one could not respect,,,,Obama,,is from here Il where I live,,,I heard about a lot of things,,,that turned me off,,,,He is in there now,,,,cos,,of a lot of stupid luck,,,and because the Clintons,,,underestimated him IMO,,,,but now that he is there,,,he , does have Clintons past staff people,,,that kinda makes me feel a little confidant in the sense ,,that he is being tought the ropes sort to speak???
About a third party,,,,,YES,,,I have been voting for Prof, John Hagelin for since 1980,,,,he is a Physicist that ran the Natural Law Party,,,they did , exactly what you said,,,they started out by winning local politics,,,and had quite a few number of them in office,,,,they were just getting ready for another run at the POTUS also but no $ to be competitive,,,,You would have liked him a lot,,I think,,,very spiritual,,,look him up,,,,I do believe that he teaches ,,transcendental meditation now,,,with an Irish Movie Maker,,,forgot his name,,,they were on C-span's book tv,,if I can find info I will let you know,,,,,thanks

Flatus, it all started when I read Jamie's Chinese horrorscope on her blog. It said it wasn't going to be a good year for money for the Tiger.
I am sure things will look up when the sun comes back and my friend finishes fixing up my little bass boat. Nothing better for the blues than some bass and crappie fishing and wildlife watching. It is hard to fret when you are doing either.
Also I haven't had a chance to start working in the dirt. Dirt therapy is also very healing. I lost many of my herbs last year and need to replant them. I love growing herbs. Thanks.

right now he's mostly accused of not reporting it in a timely matter. his IT guy says they didn't know. but storing credit card#'s on a web server is just nuts, that's why you use a gateway.
if you do accept credit cards directly you have to be pretty aware of PCI requirements which say numbers should be locked up in a room in a way that isn't connected to the internet. that would probably be contract law though. it's around a 15 page survey that you say you're following, plus an external probe.

Well, I've got seeds to deal with in the morning. Peppers that can take the paint off a Chevy, and tomatoes.
Got a half pound of blue corn coming folks, should be in the middle of next week.

A long time ago I was reading a well researched novel about early Canada and there was a mention of the women speaking of their first family, second family as in losing children to diptheria.

jamie,
as long as the version of Office you have isn't too old to be under support you'll be fine. make sure the computer you're putting it on is connected to the internet, and if it's missing anything it needs will be downloaded on the next update. You do do updates, don't you?
You can remove a lot in windows. if it's still in the same spot (i still use xp) go to control panel, add/remove software, and click on windows modules. unclick any module you don't want. it's all stored in cab compression files so if you want it later it will be re-added
liutilities.com has great information on other modules.

Thanks for the coleman update, don1one.
It is just so hard to keep up with all the latest models coming out of the coleman scandal factory. I also understand that there have been some substance issues with his personal rasputin, eric mische. Probably, steroids, he's a body builder.

Solar,
Great show on Moyer's tonight about the Bible and the Golden Rule. Also addresses the violence of the Bible.
I just tuned in, but they're saying a lot that I like.

I picked up on that because I do websites. I haven't heard about substance abuses and mische.
The question is whether or not Coleman can continue to raise funds to keep all the appeals going, but I would imagine online donations are a small part. It's the deep pocket party donations that probably do most of the funding.

The mische thing is probably a nothingberger. From my experience, and that of a couple of others who were once fairly close to norm, mische makes rove look like a boy scout, but that has to do with low politics, not doping.

Viv,
Municipalities in Europe used to toss dead paupers into mass graves like garbage. Except garbage just rotted in the streets with the horse and people poo.
Annwhat, no religious rites for the potter's field. Just toss and cover when it starts to stink & the big shots complain. The theory that disease sprang from bad odors led to the civilizing changes. I understand it was like that into the 1800s in most of Europe's urban areas.
