  6. Good morning,

How many of you like daylight savings time? Since many of you seem to be up all day and night, it may not be any big deal. I don't like it and the only benefit I have ever heard is that it sells more golf balls. For me it is just another added stressor and my tank is full right now.

I did hear the other night on the NBC nightly news that for the first three days after it starts there is a 5% increase in heart attacks. If that is true then I think this would be the first place to start on healthcare reform because heart attacks ain't cheap.

Another thing I wanted to mention is, where did Craig get that picture of Rush he put behind bars yesterday? I haven't seen any pictures of him that looked that good lately. Maybe Craig is also a little afraid of him.

I’ve got a sinking feeling that if you zoom out you will find that he controls the locking mechanism from his side of the caged enclosure.

  11. Good morning everyone. Happy Spring Forward Day!

I really think this day should be a national relaxation holiday. No work, no meetings, no places to be at certain times. Let time just float and let everyone sleep, loaf around and de-stress.

It's going to hit 76 today. I'm breaking out the spring clothes and wearing flip flops.

I have finally been forced to fix my hyperthyroidism. I neglected it and only kept my levels low enough where I stayed off the ceiling. I liked being able to pig out without gaining weight. After years of that neglect I have no bone density. One sneeze and I self destruct.

Now I have to stay off all my antithyroid meds until I can get radioactive iodine to kill the gland. I have to live with what feels like a bee hive inside for a month. I warned everyone to stay clear. Relaxation will not be possible for a while.

  15. Because "real" knowledge is power ....

In Pres. Obama’s Weekly Address last Saturday was a declaration of war against the special interests when he stated:

"I realize that passing this budget won’t be easy. Because it represents real and dramatic change, it also represents a threat to the status quo in Washington. I know that the insurance industry won’t like the idea that they’ll have to bid competitively to continue offering Medicare coverage, but that’s how we’ll help preserve and protect Medicare and lower health care costs for American families. I know that banks and big student lenders won’t like the idea that we’re ending their huge taxpayer subsidies, but that’s how we’ll save taxpayers nearly $50 billion and make college more affordable. I know that oil and gas companies won’t like us ending nearly $30 billion in tax breaks, but that’s how we’ll help fund a renewable energy economy that will create new jobs and new industries. In other words, I know these steps won’t sit well with the special interests and lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they’re gearing up for a fight as we speak. My message to them is this: So am I."

  24. Patsi, That 'black backed gull' is a beautiful bird. I don't think I've ever seen one. It looks quite large. The only 'large' bird I see in our parking lots are pigeons. :) They love junk food., so I guess we have something in common..

    The 100-day sprint
    Secretary Clinton's safety dance
"Clinton on her second trip was substantive and unspectacular—dispatching envoys to Damascus, carefully navigating the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, announcing President Barack Obama's visit to Turkey and meeting with her counterpart from Moscow.

It was important but safe diplomacy, most of which will only pay off, if it ever does, over the next few months and years, much the way Clinton's early work in the Senate paid off for her there.

..Clinton clearly loves the forums, which allow her to expound on issues like women's rights and the need for universal health care that go well beyond the usual portfolio of a secretary of state."

  26. Heard an interesting point about DST last night. We drive more after switching, so net-net savings in energy is zip. We have more heart attacks for first three days in Spring (mentioned above) and first day after setting back.

The only good thing about DST (besides daylight after getting off work) is people spend more money.

    Posted by: don1one Author Profile Page | March 8, 2009 10:59 AM

  27. Chloe -- I'm not really sure what gull it was that I saw....but in trying to find out, I did read that the "black backed" gull migrates through TN in March...so I'm guessing that's what they were. I pulled over and parked and just watched them...I don't often see that kind of bird!

  28. "The only good thing about DST (besides daylight after getting off work) is people spend more money."

Yes indeed -- Carol mentioned golf balls earlier...and that's what I've always heard, that the sports equipment industry got it established. I just want to damned long nights and cold to go away....

  29. I think they meant retail in general does better, because people don't just rush home. They go out to restaurants and stores after work.

One of the NPR people mentioned darkness is perceived as punishment and light as reward, so we feel better about ourselves as the light comes in. So it's more than just more daylight, but we're less pessimistic about things. Unless of course you're Rush.

  30. The Parable of the Prodigal Economy.

In being that it is Sunday and I am at the church on the big river, my camp, I started thinking about our financial crisis and how it reminds me of that story of the parable of the prodigal son. If you forgot or didn't go to Sunday school here is a link:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Prodigal_Son

The banks, big corp. execs, and the irresponsible home buyers go out and swander the riches while the rest of us stayed at home, worked hard, and were responsible. Now we have to watch as they come crawling home for the government to throw them a big feast.

As a young girl in Sunday school I never cared for or understood that story and now as a much older girl I still don't. Just a thought for your Sunday.

The returning bankers et al seem to think they can blow their inheritance and then come back and demand their brother's inheritance to do it all over again.

  35. Good Morning All. I love the change to Daylight Savings Time. Until my circadian clock resets, it is the one time of the year when I can feel as if I'm sleeping in. I stayed up late last night and the clock said an emotionally pleasing 7:30 when I awoke. For about a week I won't get up before 6:00.

  39. Time-------

The most important thing that there is!,,,,,,but is it just an illusion

There never was a time that the world began, because it goes round and round like a circle, and there is no place on a circle where it begins.

When I look at my watch it tells the time,,it goes round,,and so the world repeats itself again and again.....there was once in England where the gov,,,for a reason,( will look it up,,forgot,,,,business),,,,,had to adjust its day (cut 12 hours of it ) the people flooded the government buildings,,and demanded that the 12 hours of time be given back to them,,,that they had lost 12 hours of their lives, I don't think that anyone looses anything,,,just their common sense,,,,,,just go with the flow,,,about all of this time biz,( OH damn look at what TIME is is ),,,,,gotta go Im LATE,,,,and my time is over hahaha

  42. Don1one

I don't have a problem with the President and First Lady. It is a tradition and probably a good one from an historical perspective. At 35-40,000 each, it's probably a bargain.

Now cabinet and sub cabinet heads at the same rate strikes me as a waste of funds. Photographs are good enough. There is something about the $46,000 for the Rumsfeld portrait that just gripes my patootie.

Rumsfeld yes, Gates, no. I like the way he's stood up to the neo-con agenda of was as the solution.

  74. Jamie, it's none of your business how I feel about the past. Just because I hold Obama to a higher standard is no reason to question my integrity. Obama said he was different--I want to see it. Until then he must prove it. As a person/citizen I have a duty to criticize our leaders, without having to explain myself—“truth is a complete defense”. Conversing with a fanatic is always a losing proposition.

  76. Art and Music as well as virtually all courses other than basics have been virtually eradicated from most schools unless a student qualifies for AP and education continues to suffer.

When I was in High School, the electives included but weren't limited to: Musical instruction with an instrument with a full time teacher. Glee Club. Accapella Choir, Music history and appreciation, Art classes from drawing to sculpture, Creative Writing and Poetry, Latin, French, German, and Spanish, Civics and International relations and trade courses from Auto Shop to Woodworking. All of that was offered at every public school in Los Angeles.

Funding of schools now is such that the children are lucky if they have books and a chair to sit in while reading it with a daily two hour commute on polluted freeways.

  84. 'Looks like it's going to be another day of drama"

That's not what I see. Just a 'passionate' discussion. We all have different things that are very important to us all, and of course that's going to show up in our conversations. It's all good.

Patsi said once that this place will never be all 'sweetness and light'. (and who needs that?) I'm paraphrasing, but she pointed out that our founding fathers had many heated arguments.

If we're going to discuss politics (or anything else, for that matter), it's going to get heated. And we're going to have contradictory beliefs to one another. So what. Say what you want to say, and if others don't agree, so be it.

I think things here are just as they should be. Renee is right to thank Craig for this blog. Some place we can come and say what we believe. And enjoy good company while we're here.

I've been trying a prayer of thanks for the bad things and challenges that come along. Those are the times I stretch and grow. And I think God tends to answer prayer right after we give up, so we stretch a little further each time. And we try to limit God too much of the time.

Art of all kinds should rattle cages. Over the long run it will either die a natural death of historic disapproval or it will find a following and in some cases come to be lauded as genius.

The present tense is rarely the time to make those decisions. When it comes to public dollars, the way it is done now with money going to institutions and groups to hand out seems to work well.

If the public disapproves of the decisions made by museum directors or leaders of arts groups, those people will get replaced. In the meantime, their choices get seen.

  132. Greetings from the desert:

We in AZ don't change the time when the rest of the nation is busy with their clocks one hour in whatever direction. It's wonderful.

When I was much younger and thought I could change the world one of my dreams was to have everyone in the world change their clocks by one half hour (splitting the difference between standard and daylight time) and then leave them alone forever. Now as a much older man one of my dreams is to have everyone in the world change their clocks by one half hour and then leave them alone forever.

The naysayers were opposed then (many years ago) and the naysayers are opposed now. Not much has changed in my life -- the naysayers always win.

Have a great day everyone! And, oh, Craig, I can still enter the fray as typekey let me in. Ditto what Renee said: Thanks for the website.

I have to say that the Celts are truly an amazing team to watch -- that they could stage a comeback like that without Garnett or Rondo on the floor. They are an awesome team. The defense is just a pleasure to watch.

Of course I'll be rooting for Orlando in the playoffs -- but if we get knocked out, I'll be happy to pull for the Celts the rest of the way.

Now it's on to Corey's Evil Empire to defeat the Pistons tomorrow night. If we can pull that one out, I'll consider this entire season a success and everything else gravy!

Congratulations on finally sweeping all the mines off the beach, flame-frying the ridiculous full-time troll and reducing the enemy pillbox to rubble.

I'll honestly be sorry if Pogo can't figure out a way around the Typepad thing, but if he truly cannot we will simply say he died valiantly in combat and is Trailmix's first honest-to-god war hero. He made the ultimate sacrifice -- his anonymous handle -- so that others might live free.

Let us cross over the river now, dear Pogo, and rest under the shade of the trees.

It was 65F in Montreal today, almost unheard of in March, and Mr. Tylenol and I had coffee on a bench in the park (definitely unheard of in March). Soaked up that vitamin D that's deficient here from November till.. ohhh i dunno..july??.. Anyway, was the kind of day that reminds you that outdoor festival season is not far away, and had me going to the Jazz Festival site and booking tickets for this year's 2-week event. 170. I have been thinking that with all of the $ that has been given to the Banks,,,Auto manufacturers,,,aig,,the stimulus,,,,all of the $ in pork,,,etc,,etc, and we are not done yet,,,by a long shot,,,,,,,,Wouldn't it have been better to let,,,ALL,,,of these corps die off ,,,let them go bankrupt, one by one,,,,,,and replace( a new corp) them one by one with the same services that they had provided before, with a totally new team to fuck it up with.

Example,,,,,,GM,,,assign a team of Auto experts,,,( maybe professors) that are not within the GM structure,,,and then give them the cash that they thought that they needed,to get it off the ground,,and still more when they showed where that $ would be needed,,,,in other words provide $ as it is proven that is needed to keep running,,,,you would get a totally new team with new fresh Ideas also,,,,

AIG,,,wtf,,is going on,,,how much $ so far for them ,,to insure their clients, and we can't even see who they are,,,if they had gone bankrupt,,,while the governement had a team ready with our $ to take over,,,the world would even have much more confidence in us? and so would the stock market,,?

Country wide,,,another wtf,,,,replace them greedy pigs ,,,with new greedy pigs,,thats what I say....but at least we could get our $ back ,,,once they started to make prof fits,,,,all along providing safety nets for us,,,and stetting all of the regulation standard that should be in place,,,not so much that,,they would not let biz be biz,,,but a definite return to re-regulation,,,,,and lastly,,,would this not have an effect over the special interest groups,,,they would not be in place,,,,or very little of them would have any influence,,,,,at some future date ,,,these government run corps could be sold at a profit for the gov,,Us...and than the all of this bs could start all over again???? one by one we would have been up and running by now,,,,auto tax credits again,,,,low interest,,,Someone had to think about this,,,,I did not hear anything,,,??

Im willing to say that all of this would have resulted in a lot less $ that is being spent now. Since Bush,,,and Tarp,,,nothing has really changed except $ from one greedy person to another,,,and or the same ones also,,,I don't see it going to get better until we get new people to do what others have screwed up IMO,,,,an this latest thing with country wide proves it.

Oh and start the flat sales and income tax,,,to get rid of the irs,,,just had to throw that in there.

Texting and instant messaging, social networking sites and the Internet in general can certainly be said to distract people from other tasks. But what researchers are worrying more about are the plastic brains of teens and young adults who are now growing up with all this..."

    Solar! Good timing.
I was thinking about that very thing earlier today, after Corey posted a quote (thank you Corey): "I don't think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday." - Abraham Lincoln.

It reminded me of what may have been JFK's most famous quote: " And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country" http://www.famousquotes.me.uk/speeches/John_F_Kennedy/5.htm

Very meaningful, at this time, when so many seem to have their hand out. When I say that, I'm talking about what you said in the quote up above. Banks and other lenders, automobile companies, pork, etc. And you're right, we're not done yet, by a long shot.

Patsi...I still will always like James Agee better than Steinbeck. Steinbeck was all about sentimentality (see, Tom Joad speech, which was a big lie in the end) and Agee was all about trying to perceive and describe The Truth as best he could.

Steinbeck won the Nobel. Not sure what happened to Agee.

Maybe every time TCM shows "African Queen" they should put - Written by James Agee in really big letters. :-) I doubt many people now know or read "A Death In The Family".

He only lived to 46 courtesy of Alcoholism. Steinbeck had an additional 20 years to become a legend., but then I like Steinbeck's non-fiction and short stories more than the famous novels.

the other thing: Steinbeck.. I still love to read The Winter Of Our Discontent, but other than that, I find his novels so depressing that I just can't get through them. And even when I DO get through them, I usually end up asking myself, "so??" Maybe ya 'had to be there."

Cannery Row is one of the shorter novels and my favorite since it is much more positive and humorous plus centers on the character taken from Ed Ricketts. The frog hunting is a classic of humor writing.

My actual favorite is The Log From The Sea of Cortez also done with Ricketts.

  252. In the early 30s, Steinbeck was the leading American proponent of Realism (capital R) which posited that humans are specks afloat on the tide of time, and only in concert can we affect outcomes. Tom died prematurely, as poor people do when they speak up against injustice. To my way of thinking, the Realism school included Gunter Grass, Edna Ferber, and Herman Wouk.

Agee was a proponent of small r realism, which aims at accurately reflecting life in its minute details. I think this school includes Sinclair Lewis, Erskine Caldwell, Flannery O'Connor, and John Updike.

The biases of the 30s - 50 favored the 'Big Idea' guys of the Realism school. The small r realism seems to be in the ascendent now, especially with Mr. Liberal.

For my part, I just love a rippin' yarn.

I sometimes spent time at the art department, painting or drawing because several of the professors were friends of my mom's.

She needed these summer classes for several years, and since my father was on the tractor most summers, I went with her. I respected her decision to go back to school -- and did what it took to help her do it, as the only "baby" she had left in a family of five girls. My children would have done the same for me.

Your comment about being taken to college class is interesting. I think a lot of 12 year olds would have like to go. Your point of being on the farm brings another point to mind. 300. since the DEA is under the department of justice
could pres obama just choose not to fund
    investigation and prosecution of domestic
marijuana use on the federal level anyway
or would this be political suicide 'could be seen
as being soft on drugs' but it would save a lot
of money and cut down on the prison population
    saving even more money

  301. Dex,

If you're out there minding the store for Craig tonight, Siena had it pretty easy through the quarters and semis, but tonight - Monday we go up against a good Niagara team.

I think it will be on ESPN2 at 9PM EDT.

  303. OK Ed, I'll watch for it...thanks.

I dearly love Patsi and LL, but his funny posts parodying Joe Hill themes and Tom Joad lyrical points were just that, funny parody, but to post them as "favorite comments" would then make them plagiarisms.

Jamie, I'm reading Tom Sawyer again, it's been 45 years since I read it all the way through: it's still funny and great.
I have read Cannery Row more times that any other book , probably at least 10 times. It's time to breeze through it again!
Yes, the frog-hunting, backing the old car over the coastal range mountain road, the thoughts that Doc expressed over his "two quarts of beer"---I love that book.

C-Bob , I survived my accidental poisoning-by- table sugar last night, so much that for brunch I made French toast, sprinkled with white confectioners' sugar.
We have more water stockpiled for the Texas water ditch diversion: Ohio to Texas, ---it rained all day, a tornado touched down in Perrysburg, by the Maumee River, no personnel lost, no property damage. It hit in an open field, right beside the I-75 freeway. The image caught on perma-cam was astounding...huge funnel....

And to say Thank You to Craig for making this a much calmer place to lurk and/or comment upon occasion.

  305. After learning that Pogo is now missing in action, it is only fitting and proper that we never forget him.

    And so...
