Obama's First 50 Days Report Card

| | Comments (263)

I give President Barack Obama a passing grade for his first 50 days. But then, I'm usually an easy grader in the first quarter of a first term. I mean, really, a pass-fail test is all that should be applied when less than two months on the job. Let's at least wait until summer vacation to hand out actual grades.

reportcard.jpgFaced with an imposing range of challenges, from a collapsing economy to nuclear missile testing in North Korea, the President seems to be a good listener (a huge plus, folks, no matter what you say), a reasoning decider (now that is a change, you must admit) and, above all, he's willing to acknowledge mistakes and move on without crybaby attacks on his attackers.

There are always going to be those who want to declare a form of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the early days of an administration they don't like. That's especially true for an opposing party angling toward the next congressional election and needing to boost the negative ratings for a President who remains very popular despite the incoming flak.

Compared to the first days of many recent presidents, I say Obama is well ahead of the curve.

  1. Compared to George Deficit Custer Bush -Obama is meeting expectations and then so.

The administration is multi-tasking and it is the combination of all these factors that will help the underlying problems of the economy. It is easy to send out soundbites and ride the wave of a headline but not so easy to do the hard work to repair the damage years of poor policy have caused.

Failure to fix the healthcare system, failure to have a rational foreign policy and failure to regulate businesses that sorely needed regulation.... thanks Shrub and all your enablers.

  2. Well they got their first major legislation passed early and they have put together a good senior team. As usual filling in the lower slots is slow, it always is.

So they have Aced the first test and got most of their home work in on time.

  5. In the previous thread, someone noted the price of oil is starting to go back up. I think this is an area that needs to be addressed. Prices especially for food stuffs are starting to drop --but that will end if fuel returns to the $4.00 range.

I've read several articles that say by this summer, oil will be back up there. The Obama administration needs to make sure that does not happen. Jawbone Exxon.

  16. Craig,

I completely agree with this post. Both Jack and KC are also right. The do-less commentators at MoJo have certainly upped the criteria for a passing grade haven’t they? Whatever happened to the 100 day mark to give even a first grading period mark? Obama has removed the chocks from the wheels and now we just gotta see which side of the hill the train’s gonna roll down. Summer may be too soon to tell.

Of course there is one thing that is readily apparent, with my new posting buddies as portals into the blog, I’ll never be the first comment on a thread. Nuts.

  20. Craig your statement - "I'm usually an easy grader in the first quarter of a first term. " is an understatement.

Barack may get a passing grade for effort, being the nice guy, having the cute wife and for throwing everything against the wall - and if you like socialistic programs with Big Government in control then heck give him an A+ and a diploma.

But if you measure on the economic consequences of a continued market crash since his election – a result of poor focus on the key problem – stuffing to many pills at one time and the honest fear by most in the business world of his actions – then he gets a big fat F-

Now that is not saying we do not need to address Healthcare and other issues- but the game he plays he also gets an A+ for pulling the wool.

I’ll try to format with an address and a signature line to avoid that. If today is someone’s birthday, consider it serendipitous.

I was wrong about lunch – no bowl of soup had my name on it today – but a big ol’ plate of beef chilaquiles did, and now I’m stuffed and drowsy. Too bad, I have research to do, and that’s enough of a narcotic on its own without the post lunch drowsies on top of it. I just hope they don’t find me face down snoring on the keyboard. KCG - Lack of focus !

What does that mean -- Question ? How many items in your house can you keep your eyes on at one time?
Lets go back to the house burning example of a few days ago .. So you see part of your house is on fire - you stay on that and direct the fireman there - and you do not ask them to go water your garden or fill your pool.... Put out the fire..

Then when that is undercontrol do a better job on the garden and pool - or Healthcare and Education

I understand the idea..what are you talking about in the Obama administration.

What is the problem with what he is doing. Obama's financial team is working full time on the economy issue. Everyone agrees the cost/paying for healthcare is at the root cause of lack of profitability for some companies. Just what do you think Obama's team should be doing that they are not because of lack of focus.

It's easy to throw out a talking point..but I've seen no evidence to back it up except more of the talking point
saying it over and over doesn't make it fact.

Where's the example of lack of focus... I guess you expected the financial crisis to end -presto chango.

"hose are borrowed dollars''' two trillion a year just to pay the interest on the national debt "

O yee of little faith guess you didn't get the message, the rich will pay for it. But there is another trillion $$$ deal in the works. The government investment plan that will guarantee you 3%, and if you make less than $65,000 the government will match your contribution. Don't worry about where the $$$ will come from, the rich will pay for it, but by that time the rich will be any family making over $50,000. As Shirley and Lee once said, "Let the good times roll".

  46. Bush is not the president, Obama is. Talking about Bush does what? We could talk about Bush's higher approval records for the same many days in office, we could talk about the DOW setting records, or the low interest rates, we could talk about the high employment for the first 6 years, but so what, what does that mean today? Nada. When Bill Clinton was president I don't recall the Democrat complaining about the gobs of money they made because of the ghost dot com market, and the recession which followed when that ghost market burst. Right now Obama is president, and no one can argue with his enthusiasm, but if he doesn't start focusing on what is really ailing this country, banks, credit and housing, he will go down as a very ineffective president. All this other stuff may be important, but it is secondary until he get the big 3 under control, in the mean time all he is accomplishing is getting more TV face time.

Bush was president the last 2 years with a Democrat House and Senate. Today we have this $481 billion bill that will pass with all that wasteful spending, and Obama was in the Senate when this budget was written. huh?
Just because it's an earmark doesn't mean it's wasteful. Someone has to decide where the money goes and because it's a Congress Critter doesn't automatically mean it's waste, fraud, and abuse.

  67. I do blame Congress. The Dems though have had very little say in our current policy failures. I do think Speaker Pelosi was wrong to cut off discussion about the war tax and to be afraid of tax increases in general. Under the DEMOCRATIC leadership they began a pay as you go plan...not the wild credit spree of the Shrubbians in the name of terra terra terra.

I heard Janet Napolitano speaking today about finally get down to work in New Orleans and other areas still suffering from Katrina. I guess though it's amistake for the Obama adminstration to do that..might take the focus off of the banks

  68. While Republicans did use a record number of fillibusters, I have no problem blaming Democrats and Republicans for this mess. If Democrats had actually been an opposition party a lot less of this would have happened.

I offered to purchase some spines many times.

I also agree with Harry on Greenspan, and have been saying so for years. He was plainly pumping money into the market, especially around election times.

  69. You don't win an election being typical.
    So what's new?

Well Obama is suppose to be the new kind of politican. That is what he told us.

You tell the voters what they want to hear, not what you are really going to do. Have you ever purchased a car and had the dealership tell you the cars under lining problems?

  70. "Well Obama is suppose to be the new kind of politican. That is what he told us."

Come on Truth. Did anyone ever really believe that?
I agree with you, it's silly to put anyone, including the president, on a pedestal. And he will ultimately be held accountable. But, once you watch what others are saying here, a while longer, you'll realize they're not wearing blinders. They're just giving him some time (just like GW got). But you're right, we need to focus on now.

And know, the dealer never mentions the problems to you. You find out AFTER you buy the car.

Why do you think the voters handed the WH to the Democratic party and substantially increased their margin of votes? The last two years have been on long no no no filibuster and the few times a law could get passed, the Republican president vetoed it.

    Ping, Truth In Fantasy...

I totally agree with your analysis way back upthread that Obama is losing focus and trying to take on too much at once. Our country simply is not built to handle this kind of bold leadership.

Rather, he should go with something closer to the Bush model...

    Term One: Walk.
    Term Two: Chew Gum

Too bad Bush couldn't get a third term to prove he could do both at once. : )

No less a Democrat than Tip O'Neill realized that he couldn't just rant and rave at Reagan from Capitol Hill. He understood the tectonic shift, and went to the White House to deal with the guy and even smoke a few cigars.

As a partisan Democrat, I never forgave Tip for that...but, hey, he was a better politician than me. And he probably turned out to be on the right side of history, even though it pains me to admit that.

His “Chalk Talk on Alcohol” lecture, which began “I’m Joe Martin, and I’m an alcoholic,” and more than 40 films are legendary...[He]raised funds to buy and renovate Oakington, the estate owned by the widow of U.S. Senator Millard Tydings on the Chesapeake Bay near Havre de Grace. The treatment center, which opened in 1983, has since provided treatment and program services to more than 40,000 people suffering from the disease of addiction, and their families. She did no time. But I will say this -- she's done the time ever since. In fact, she just had a near breakdown again. I think this haunts her every minute of every day...that's certainly in no way an excuse...but DAMN...I think if young people had any idea of the long term effect of causing a death, they'd get a designated driver.

I actually consider myself lucky in many ways. So many children who have alcoholism or violence in their lives have no way to get away from it. But lets look further -

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/188565
    Howard Fineman writes....
"in ways both large and small, what's left of the American establishment is taking his measure and, with surprising swiftness, they are finding him lacking."

Him being President Obama -- And many in the Dem Congress are now questioning this adminstration.

Now stop your spinning as this represents both Dem's and Rep's - and business meeting of good fair people are wondering what is Barack trying to do?

Maybe we are just not bright enough to understand?

You are way to bright to consider any on line poll valid or even vaguely believable. If you wanted a 90% F grade all you would have to do is post the link on a freeper site and it would look as if he should resign tomorrow.

  129. One last item

The wording used by the Obama administration regarding the arguable effectiveness and ethical elements to allow new embryonic stem cell lines will come back at him.

To simply state that the prior ban was strictly political does not sit well with many.

The point that if you truly believe that Human Life begins at conception, then one may not agree but should not this be position be honored and respect. Especially if you are the President of the United States.

Once again he was careless in the approach to handle this and to quickly put a check mark in the box (taken from Howard Fineman) –

But if he said something different then he would have to acknowledge the creditability that Human Life does begin at Conception. A question that I am glad not to have to answer.

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | March 10, 2009 10:47 PM

  130. Jamie -maybe you give me to much credit :~) for being bright... But I am very good at numbers and stuff -..

    Ping,

What bothers me about the resistance to using the embryonic stem cells is that no one on that side of the argument says what to do with them. There isn't exactly a line on Conservative wombs winding around the block to adopt them. To be consistent you would have to oppose in vitro fertilization.

  147. I actually never really believed that Shakespeare wrote his own works or at least he only partly wrote them. In any case, his histories were sorely full of errors.

As for Obama, I'm wholly delighted with his first day much less his first 50. He's done more actual WORK than Bush did in each 4 years.

Now folks are questioning if this administration is doing TOO much??? Everyone must be complacent and think the Bush admin was the standard?? Think back to what little we knew that Bush ever did.

Someone recently said that Bush was a dictator for all of his 8 years. That's so true. Many of us saw that years ago and were screaming bloody murder.

Now that Obama's trying to actually get stuff done, any stuff, for the people, those nattering, nabobs of negativity are trying to say he's a socialist.

Funding No child Left Behind might make the program work. I suspect it won't. The thing Obama said that does work is pre-school. I remember all the Title programs from the old days. They worked then and should help now.]

  169. Laying off an entire district is probably fraught with all kinds of legal problems, particularly in a collective bargaining state like Michigan.

Good contracts have very detailed Reduction In Force provisions.

Giving everyone layoff notices is not only probably illegal,it is personally destructive to individual employes and the cohesiveness of the district.

    Good luck Pontiac school employees..

  181. Good morning everyone! I just strolled through the comments from yesterday and last night.

Patsi -- The story about the OC BOS pulling the funding from Planned Parenthood was disturbing. PP was not using any of the funds for abortions, although there are some PP clinics that do provide abortions, PP used the BOS funds to pay for an effective sexual health program that not only encouraged abstinence, it realistically gives young people accurate information about sexuality, personal health and safety. The comments after that article were illuminating on the situation. Apparently the BOS changed the agenda at the last minute alerting only the anti-choicers and PP officials of the hearing. PP did not have the chance to get out the word to the pro-choice community to come to the hearing, so the Sups only heard from a roomful of anti-choice people.

  183. Oregon DEM -- I am sooo with you on the whole POV that that politicians are in control of our school system and not the teachers. If the politicians just backed off and let the teachers do what they are trained for and have the gift to do, I really think our children would be better off. Politicians know that public education is an emotional issue for a significant portion of the population and that drives their involvement to the point of chasing every theory and policy proposal leaving the teachers and the kids whipsawed as a result. Now we're teaching to the test, covering all sorts of trivial pursuits Q&As and calling it education. There is very little in-depth study, drawing interdisciplinary connections, creative and critical thinking. Just Garbage In and Garbage Out rote recitation of factoids that must be memorized for a test.

In Virginia -- ever since the implementation of the Standards of Learning (SOLs) school children have not taken a test that is nationally-normed, other than SATs. Guess what? As our SOL scores have gone up, our SAT scores have gone DOWN.

  187. Dexter -- My Dad was a friend of Father Joe's. Dad was the first successful outpatient who completed treatment through the Long Beach Naval Hospital where Father Joe's first Chalk Talk film was shown on a regular basis. It changed my Dad's life and his Navy career. With support from Father Joe, Capt. Joe Zuska, Dr. Joe Pursch and Dick Jewell, Dad opened a 24 hour outpatient clinic on the docks at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. After he retired from the Navy, he opened an inpatient detox unit at Riverside Memorial Hosp. That led to identifying a need for another clinic closer to Palm Springs, where a lot of my Dad's patients were coming from. So Dad collaborated again with the Joe's, and help from Betty Ford who was also treated at Long Beach Naval Hospital, another clinic was opened at Eisenhower Memorial Hospital in Palm Springs using the Navy treatment model which Fr. Joe had influenced so well. After Dad's second retirement we moved to the East Coast, and Dad spoke a few times at Ashley before he went on to the Big Meeting in Heaven. Here is the link to Father Martin's site again. I donate to the "scholarship fund" which pays for those who otherwise would not afford treatment, one of whom 20 years ago was my sister. About a year ago, I was rummaging through a box of books and found her copy of "No Laughing Matter" inscribed to her by Father Joe.

Dexter - It took a lot of years for my dad's attempts with AA to stick, but he celebrated his 10th birthday shortly before his death

Love the new Shakespeare portrait. I never worry about accuracy with him. He never let a fact interfere with a good story. When you add that he had to please sponsors to make Money, he sometimes blurred issues. He wrote quite a nice description of Elizabeth I in her cradle that would have been performed before her in her much later years. It probably wasn't a good time to mention that daddy lopped off mommy's head.

It depends entirely on which taxes and where the government spends the money. Anything that makes it possible for those at the lower end of the ladder to buy products benefits those at the top of the ladder as the money moves up the chain.

The Republicans problem is that they suffer from the idea of trying to increase the money at the top of the ladder by taking away services to those at the bottom thinking that the funds at the top will seep down so that the lower end will get the money for their needs that way - doesn't work. Result: Less money on both ends as we can see from the current condition.

"Came across this brand new blog yesterday while researching the "Restore the Republic" video I wrote about as an update to my post about Glenn Beck and Chuck Norris and their "We Surround Them" coming TV even on Fox News.

Follow me below the fold for a glimpse into the hatred, paranoia and desires for the overthrow of our government that this blogger who hopes to sponsor a "Patriot March" on Washington, DC this July to protest the tyranny of the Federal Government under President Obama.

This is one wingnut's vision of future events which he believes the Obama administration and control of Congress by the Democratic Party will bring about. Read it not because it is an "entertaining" piece of of unintended farce. Read it because of what it reveals about the mindset of far too many people who do not accept Obama's victory, and believe he should be taken down "by any means necessary." In that respect, it is deeply disturbing. This "prophecy" is from someone who listens to Fox News, is a member of the ditto head nation of Rush Limbaugh, and who likely attended one of those hate fests last October otherwise known as Sarah Palin rallies. I think his screed is representative of a new wave of right wing hatred and violence laced fantasies (and some far to real plans for home grown terrorist violence) which have re-emerged over the last year. So read it, please, if only to better know the insanity that is lurking in the shadows waiting for its moment in the sun. "

  210. From the desk of Pogo:

    Mornin’

This being March, the featured bagel this month at Panera Bread is the (fanfare, please) Trailmix bagel. I will proudly order it in honor of our host’s largess.

OK watching MoJo this morning (Forgive me for I have sinned – somehow appropriate in this Lenten season – if only I were Catholic … oh, well) I finally closed the book on Barnicle. I really used to like him when I lived in Renee’s necko’th’woods, but today was kinda the last straw. He was panting and drooling behind Joe’s stupid “wrong color shag carpet” rant about a guy who was held in Gitmo for eons then let go, only to be recaptured on the battlefield fighting “us”. Mika’s stock went up in my book when she called them down for confusing the 2 issues – one -terms of imprisonment without charges – with the other – conditions of imprisonment. Barnicle used to write a pretty good column that usually had good insight into political things. Now he’s become just another stupid anti-muslim talking head spouting silly shallow talking points. Too bad.

And it looks like going from a president who could handle no one thing at a time to one who can address more than one thing at a time (wouldn’t it be nice if the world gave us only one problem to deal with at a time?) is just too much for mqw. Newsflash – we have more than one problem, and there are different folks working on solutions to the different problems. mqw, if Obama took your suggested approach, we might never see anything improve.

And I see the Senate passed the last of the Bushco omnibus budgets to get the gov’t through Sept. McCain and Boner were being their usual disingenuous selves. Yep, McCain is right about it being business as usual in Washington – at least for him and Boner.

And Ping, if you’re still around, I wouldn’t put too much stock in Fineman’s assessment. Gallup shows his approval up and down between 62 & 67% since Jan. 21 – hardly the trend he suggests is occurring.

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/116479/Barack-Obama-Presidential-Job-Approval.aspx

Now if he’s talking only about Repubs, he is likely wrong.

  211. Pogo, I love Panera! I like the cinnamon crunch bagel when I'm in the mood for something sweet (then, when am I not) :) That giant cinnamon roll they sell is my favorite though. And their breads, don't even get me started. When we have lunch there, I order a small loaf of sour dough or whole grain and they give me a side of peanut butter (free!). What a meal!

I haven't been there in a while, so have not seen the Trailmix bagel. Let us know how it is.

    Hi, all,

OK, Ping, but that makes a point different than the one I suspect you’re trying to make. Sales taxes are regressive by nature – if you lower taxes that impact the lower wage earners they buy more stuff because the stuff they buy costs less. Plus they are willing to go out on a limb to incur debt to buy the stuff because the see it as a bargain. Isn’t that redistribution indirectly? The Bloomberg article goes lacking in one very important regard - it does not tell what the tax rate that was halved was, so we can’t tell what the effective price reduction on cars with 1.6 l. engines was. The other part of the article that you didn’t mention was that the sales tax reduction on small cars was “Combined with the country’s wider 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) economic stimulus package, the policies have caused General Motors Corp. to roughly double its forecast for China’s nationwide auto market growth this year.” Sorry, but this is not the picture you were painting as ironic. So tell me, if Obama proposed a tax reduction plan that was limited to payroll taxes and federal sales (or consumer product based excise) taxes, would the tax cut drumbeating Repubs support it or oppose it?

  215. Hi, all, it’s me again.

Chloe, I think I’m a gold star member of the Panera frequent diner club. Cinnamon crunch is LP’s gfavorite – and was mine before I went all savory and settled on the Everything bagel. (Although as I said, this month it’s Trailmix).

Tom Freidman has an excellent column this morning at the NYT.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/11/opinion/11friedman.html

“Finally, to do all this, the president has to make us realize how dangerous a moment we’re in, without creating a panic that will prompt Americans to put every dime in their mattresses and undermine the economy even more.”

Therein lies the crux of the problem. Yesterday we got a solicitation from one of those late night lawyers seeking plaintiffs for a class action suit against 529 college saving plan administrators. Having seen almost half of the money my father left to me evaporate, all of which was put into a 529 plan 15 months ago (great timing, hunh?) we discussed it. Knowing that the plaintiffs get lip service while the lawyers are the ones who make out in class action suits – after all it is what I do for a living (many would say on the wrong side, but hey, that’s a judgment call) – we probably won’t join in, but it’s tempting.

My suggestion of using a proxy server was that it might be a way for you to access TypeKey and register for TM.

If you are able to access a proxy server through your companies filters you would enter TM's URL in it which would bring you back here.

Then it might also allow you to do a comment and give you the chance to register with TypeKey without blocking it.

I don't know if that would work, but I thought it might be a way around the filters for you giving you the ability again to leave your own comments without going through emails.

    Just a thought.

  218. About the car situation in China.

With Chinese exports plunging and therefor Chinese workers and entrepreneurs earnings are also plunging, One has to ask "Who the f**k is buying all of these cars?"
Well it turns out that the Chinese have out Obamaed us. They have dedicated almost 600 billion to stimulus spending. IIRC, we only dedicated 450 billion to spending in our bill.

Now being communist they own a number of businesses, in fact they own a whole lot of businesses. They are funneling this almost 600 billion through these Corporations in a big spending spree.
Wonder how many of these corporations are offering as a perk for their many Politburo type managers a brand new Chinese made car.

Since many here consider me a troll and scroll past my comments it surprised me that no one would find what Frank Schaeffer said to be worth discussing since he was one of the original founders of Focus on the Family.

Jack, I think we probably have very little understanding of how the Chinese economy really works. There are apparently aspects of communism, socialism and capitalism in their system that mix in a way that would make most of the pundits who wring their hands and decry communism and socialism in all their respective forms look like friggin’ idiots. I’m pretty sure not every factory worker in China is a 12 year old boy chained to a wooden bench and given thin gruel and no paycheck. There probably are some of them, but I’d bet that is the exception rather than the rule. One thing is clear – they don’t have party politics getting in the way of enacting economic reforms that will help their economy weather the downturn in their export markets (read, US & EU).

  227. "I think we probably have very little understanding of how the Chinese economy really works"

That is true and I suspect even for the Chinese themselves.
I was reading an article yesterday that said the statistics in China are collected from the provinces and are passed up. There is an incentive to lie and exaggerate how good they are doing. This is a fossil from the Mao days. One point the article made is the Chinese then adjust the numbers taking this into account. Which was much better than the Mao government , who would believe the production numbers and believe the had a bumper crop when in fact people were on the edge of starvation.

Unfortunately, when she writes about politics, it is almost all snark and talking points with little of the insight, originality and talent she displays with her other writing.
