Despite the royal comforts of Air Force One, a fleet of helicopters, a $300,000 limousine and more than 500 aides (plus 200+ Secret Service agents) to attend to every need, it is still tough to envy President Barack Obama's jam-packed first official trip abroad this week.
This is no backpacking-across-Europe trek to find yourself. This looks like hard work. Consider the President's to-do list:
- Solve global economic crisis in London with leaders of 20 major and developing nations.
- Also in London, knock heads with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
- Go to France and give a speech on the U.S.-Atlantic alliance (in other words, tell the French how important they are - probably the easiest job of his trip).
- Stop over in Germany to persuade reluctant NATO officials that outsiders really can subdue the hostiles in Afghanistan.
- In the Czech Republic, give a speech to persuade developing nations that nuclear proliferation is totally a bad thing.
- Court Muslims in Turkey and start convincing their counterparts around the globe to like Americans, starting with an old fashioned campaign-style roundtable with students.
After a trip like that, Obama could use a week at Camp David before getting back to the drudgery of bailing out U.S. banks and putting unemployed Americans back to work.

Patsi, here's the whole paragraph off that blog:
"Craig Crawford a.k.a. “Puma-lite” shed any creditability he may have once had in defense of the Hillary Clinton campaign. Number one defender of Don Imus’ racist and homophobic (ironic) cracks. Crawford host a PUMA-Obama hate blog (On the Congressional Quarterly Web Site) for the soft core racist set, who spend most of their time bashing the president, ranting against the Catholic Church or MSNBC, all the while Mr. Crawford enthralls them with things like three day rants calling for the Chief Justice to be impeached for tripping over the presidential oath of office (hey you can’t make this shit up folks) and Crawford wonders why he’s so infrequently on the air these days."

Flatus, thanks for that quote. It makes me value my time here more.
I mentioned Obama's trip last night. Let's see if Obama can get Europeans to drink more kool aid AND wake up. I am a bit more concerned how much the EU leadership wants to reverse some dangerous trends. Without strong enforcement of UN mandates and international law, without a united stand in the face of growing arrogance of adversaries, Americans may likely withdraw unto themselves.
France -nuclear energy right now for the Middle East is a bad idea.
Germany -stop selling Iran everything they want.
England -get a grip, Sharia law for enclaves is a very bad idea.
China -you're not fooling anybody. We stop buying and local police won't be able to contain the riots.
Russia -you're not fooling anybody either. Talk about roosters coming home to roost. New miitary baes in the artic?
Eastern Europe -don't let Russia scare you.

Strategy Memo: Big Day for Detroit
"One day before he leaves for Europe, President Obama's schedule reflects some of his biggest domestic challenges. He'll announce the administration's plans for the auto industry this morning -- the biggest news is the resignation of GM's CEO. He'll also highlight conservation efforts when he signs the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act this afternoon. Later he'll travel to Capitol Hill to speak with House Democrats about his budget."

Well, I'm going to go outside and try to change the oil in both our vehicles. And, if I have enough energy I'll rotate the tires and change the anti-freeze. Sounds like I've bitten off more than I can chew. We'll see.
Both my trucks are fragile. One's a 1991 Suzuki Sidekick and the other's a 1998 Chevy Tracker. Very comfortable seating and high enough off the ground that we are able to get in and out easily and can see the traffic around us. And, excellent gas mileage, to boot.
The Tracker looks showroom-new. It's a 2-door convertible. The Sidekick is a 4x4 4-door truck. It's the one we take into the jungle, so it's a little rougher in appearance but still quite respectable.
If you don't hear from me in a few hours send someone to help Stinky get me out from under one of the darned things. :)

It has already happened around here except for rare times like this morning.
As to snow it is rare in April but we will get a least one more testing of freezing weather. It usually happens just after the Royals opening day, I used to vend beer out at the ball park. nothing like trying to sell beer when the temperature is down around 30.

Geithner always sticking with his answer to George Sunday morning concerning the bailouts saying we don't have the legal authority to go in & change contracts & even if they could then the companies would be afraid gov. will come in whenever they want. ( When we invest millions we should have that right, not just any company) George failed to pin him & Tim kept saying he wasn't going to answer certain questions. Where did the legal power come from to force out GM CEO Waggoner? Not that he should stay but with Geithners reasoning shouldn't all companies now be afraid the gov.is going to force out whomever it desires. In closing George asked Tim what he had learned through all this ,his answer was that countries have to act. That's what I would have said. One could have been don't give out anymore of the American peoples money that goes for bonus's if I want a job! All they do when giving answers like this is loose the American peoples confidence . I would like to ask with all the spending from Washington is there anyone who has been able to keep their home, keep their job anything? Is there any anyone? Show us one! Anyone who can say as a result of all the spending my family was able to keep our home? Not even one poster family. That's what makes AIG such a disgrace to the rest of us.

OK, so I thought I was going to lay off Paul Krugman - but then I read his latest piece. The following quote captures the tenor of his latest whine-ed in today's NY Times:
"Indeed, these days America is looking like the Bernie Madoff of economies: for many years it was held in respect, even awe, but it turns out to have been a fraud all along."
I am really sick of everyone piling on America with all kinds of hyperbole about greed, corruption and us being responsible for sending the entire global economy into a tailspin.
First things first, yes you can point to examples in our Country of greed gone wild. There are real-life characters on Wall Street that make the actors in "Wall Street" seem understated. You can point to excess and corruption in America - just like you can do in any other country.
But in all this chatter about the ills of America - people - including our own Mr. Krugman - would be well-served to keep in mind the following facts:
1. The Engine of the World Economy
-It is easy to point at America as the cause of the current downturn - but that is only one side of the coin. Our rampant consumerism - which people love to bemoan - is one of the biggest reasons so many other countries saw such growth over the past decades. China's growing economy has been spurred in large part by Americans buying their products. Many nations have profited greatly from our materialistic urges - so when Americans start pulling back - it directly effects all such countries.
2. Greed AND Generosity
-The US is the largest provider of foreign aid. It gives about double the amount of the second largest provider (i.e., Germany). And this figure only factors in government spending. American private donations to other countries is pretty much double the number of government spending.
http://www.globalissues.org/article/35/us-and-foreign-aid-assistance#ForeignAidNumbersinChartsandGraphs
3. The American Dream Does Not Only Benefit Americans
-Many Immigrants - both legal and otherwise - come to this Country to work and send most of their earning out of this Country to their families back home.
See this article re: this point:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/29/opinion/29kristof.html?ref=opinion
So Krugman - if you don't like America - get the f*ck out! And if you disagree with what the Administration is doing - how bout providing some freaking ideas instead of just an endless stream of criticism.

Hah, Solar. No one on this property is going to go on strike. They got 'the life' here, and they know it. :)

" No suprise there.
Dogs eye view did a very spirited defense of both Craig and Trailmix.
Noticed that the post in question happened 4 days ago and this is the first time it has come up. "
The reason I brought it up, Jack is that I get bombarded by Brian's emails and so I googled backchannel -- the short this that came up inferred that Craig had a racist blog. And good for Dog's Eye if she defended him.

Not sure how some on this blog can truthfully complain about Backchannel. The venom they were allowed to spew unchecked here over the many, many months, and you now act surprised to find their hateful comments targeted at Craig and this blog? I'm shocked, truly shocked and amazed by the reaction of individuals who get suckered punch by their competition.

Words are venom only if the receiver allows such.
And allowing such fuels the fire and thus only brings more.
It is a non subject - each individual must account for their own comments and statements - to turn the table on the host is simply ignorant and should be shamed.

Good comment ping
TiR
It is about individuals not the group as a whole.
Just finished my second breakfast now it is back to getting this place in shape. The wife has been gone for 10 days a lot of house keeping to do.

My point being.
The hear no, see no, and speak no evil mentality has worked wonderfully in our inner cities now hasn't it. It is only when those living within these neighborhood take a stand, working with the authorities and out the troublemakers will the neighborhood stand a chance of winning. Punch a bully in the nose the first time around will assure you there won't be a second time.

Knucklehead.
Warren, interesting link, but I suggest you take a look at the "Net ODA in 2007 as percent of GNI" and "Quality-adjusted aid and charitable giving/GDP (%)"charts in your link before you get too sanctimonious about US foreign aid. For that matter, I'd read the entire article if I were you. We do good stuff, but we could do much better as a proportion of GDP. I'm not defending Krugman's article from today's times - I frankly found it mundane.

This is Blasphemy
NY company to launch Mexican-made kosher tequila
NEW YORK — A New York businessman is launching a new kosher tequila in time for Cinco de Mayo. Martin Silver says Agave 99 will be on the market in time for the holiday that celebrates Mexico's defeat of French forces on May 5, 1862. Silver, president of Long Island-based Star Industries, says he wants to satisfy the craze for high-end tequila with one that observant Jews can drink.
Silver says a half million cases of the 99-proof kosher tequila are being produced at a Mexican plant using methods certified by a rabbi. It will retail for $41.95 a bottle.
The product launch — with Mexican songs sung in both Yiddish and Spanish — is set for May 5, but it will also be sold earlier for Passover, which starts at sundown on April
8 this year.
