Newspaper Targets Biden Daughter

New York Post Speculates About Cocaine Use

Before the blogosphere convicts Ashley Biden, the VP's daughter, of a cocaine felony, let us pause for a moment to consider the many equivocations in the New York Post story that launched this claim.

For starters, the only fact being reported by the Post is that a friend of Ashley's tried to sell a videotape of the alleged crime -- and the newspaper declined to pay after reviewing 90 seconds of a 43 minute tape.

The newspaper's editors act as though they took the high ground by stating "the Post refused to pay for the video." But then they go on to speculate in print about what's on it -- despite being unable to confirm that Ashley is on the tape.

If the newspaper was interested enough to watch a short clip, what was it about the tape that caused the Post to back off from obtaining it and including it with the article?

Consider some of the qualifiers in this story (emphasis added):

  • The tape "shows a 20-something woman with light skin and long brown hair"
  • The "woman appears to resemble Ashley Biden"
  • The "dialogue is difficult to discern"

The bottom line is that a responsible newspaper would not have printed this story without confirming who was on the tape. Perhaps this story will turn out to be what the Post suggests, but the newspaper's first account does not get us there.

First of all you're dead wrong. You ID'd the NY Post as a newspaper. That's like calling John Gibson or Chris Wallace, or even Bill O'Reilly, reporters. Laughable!

I would think that fish stink just a little bit more after being wrapped in the Post. Actually, if Rupert Murdoch wanted to be entirely accurate, he would rename the paper from Post to Charmin.

  16. When I was a young married man , new to my job, work "ran out" and I was sent home, but my wife had taken our car shopping, so I asked a young woman , who also had been sent home early, who drove right past my apartment, for a lift.
She obliged and drove me the five miles to my door, let me out, and I went inside.
    No big deal, right?
    Well...it turns out the lady had a well-deserved reputation as a non-discriminating sex-addict.
By the next day when I reported for work, the rumor mill had me engaged in all kinds of Kama Sutra poses, my wife had supposedly caught us in rapporto, and I was dying for more of the same action.
All because some loudmouth foreman saw us leaving together.
I learned the hard way...people are mean.

  20. Flatus - I am so sorry to hear of your tragedy. What a disappointment. I hope the kids in Korea are holding up.

Xrep - nightshade is poisonous, I think.

Solar - I think part of the problem many find with the strong defense of Israel and Jews is the fact that anti-semitism is so endemic to the entire world.

Anti-semisim has been with us since recorded history.
Most ethnic groups have been targeted at one time or another throughout history, but Jews have never ceased to be a target. It is an un-ending condition and I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever end.

Since the war and info re the camps has come out, many people don't want to be seen as anti-semitic, but believe me, anti-semitism is rampant.

For that very reason it is difficult to tell what anyone's real motivation is when he/she criticizes Israel and/or Jews. It's hard to know just what data is responsible for a comment denigrating Israel - I tend to expect most people I know or meet to have some tinge of dislike for all Jews.

It's funny that with all the known horrible things terrorists have done to Israel and Jews, those facts are thrown aside to elaborate on how Israel is evil.

I honestly don't believe you will ever change anyone's mind on this subject.

I didn't grow up with my ideas re Israel and Jews - I didn't even understand who Jews were until I was in college - even after reading Exodus, I didn't understand who they were and just exactly is anti-semitism.

When I started to pay attention and gathered facts and listened to people, I had no trouble making up my mind.

Anti-semitism is here and it is ancient and it is evil, and it colors just about everything which is said on the subject. Never doubt that.

That comes under the heading of

It isn't important that I believe her or don't believe her so I wll put off that decision until I have proof. Should that never happen, so what?

I don't understand why anyone wants to believe such a thing. Believe that there is a rumor about it and leave mit there. That's wll we know, and it's really more than enough.

The root is the most poisonous, the leaves and flowers less so, and the berries, except to children, least of all. Flatus.... so very sorry to read about your granddaughter....

we had some good news during a family gathering last night.... immediate family took my MIL out to a very nice restaurant for her 80th birthday.... the only one not there was her granddaughter (our niece), Sarah..... she lives in North Carolina... married a marine in Oct.... became pregnant in Nov..... her new husband, Dave, was scheduled to be one of the marines going to Afghanistan to go into villages where they've never gone before and the government expects them to take heavy casualties in the first few months .... Sarah cell phoned her twin sister during our meal to reveal that Dave had fallen during a training exercise the day before and badly hurt his shoulder.... he will need surgery and won't be able to join his unit for at least another 3 months..... hopefully the casualty taking will be over by then....

Sturg.... we have a good friend who loves polka so much he decided to learn to play the accordion last year.... then he got it into his head to start collecting that instrument..... to date, he owns 57 accordions....

    oh yeah.... on today's subject....

Above is a far more serious flub is proven true. Freeman's departure which I commented on weeks ago, was hardly the consequence of the "Jewish Lobby" and if events above indicate where US/Israeli relations are going, voters here will have their say soon enough.

Like playing the race card, if the Obama administration wants to start playing the "Jewish" card things will get ugly and Biden's daughter will be far down the list. This is all about credibility of the US to both the world and Americans. I am beginning to see the Press is regarded in some Democratic circles as being threatening to the spin from the WH on both the economic front and the foreign policy one.

For the price of bonuses going to just AIG, the US and Israel could expedite missile defense. No one going to sit by and watch Obama build on a false Grand Bargain and some in the Press will watch every step along the way.

This is the CQ spin of Freeman's departure. What exactly did the "Jewish Lobby" do and why did Freeman leave when the administration did not ask him to? What are the details on Freeman's resume?

And look at Zbig's role in Obama's security team. Power is back and Rice is front woman at the UN. The administration while trying to project a smile to Iran and Syria, is laying a weak foundation. Freeman's contact and positions in regard to the Saudis and Syrians is troubling. zKIng Abdullah is soon to depart and his next in line is a radical sort with ties to extremists as the Saudis move to create a new extremist group in Gaza to rival Hamas. The US also knows about Assad's support of terrorists, secret nuclear program and alliance with Iran. There is a quiet game going on and Obama ought to be concerned what the public will say when the Press starts digging in. You can't spin the public one way while work in the opposite direction. This is the change we voted for?

Note the role Hillary has and doesn't have in all of this.

  76. A most remarkable essay on the fertility of early colonial Cape Cod soils. OSH, I believe the pumpkin grew on your island.

Ya know speculation on realestate and deceptive sales practices are an American tradition as far back as the founding of the colonies.

"Among the remarkable Instances of the Power of Vegetation, I shall begin with an Account of a Pumpkin Seed, which I have well attested, from a worthy Divine. * The Relation is as follows: That in the Year 1699, a single Pumpkin Seed was accidentally dropped in a small Pasture where Cattle had been fodder'd for some Time. This single Seed took Root of itself, and without any Manner of Care or Cultivation ; the Vine run along over several Fences, and spread over a large Piece of Ground far and wide, and continued its Progress till the Frost came and killed it. This Seed had no more than one Stalk, but a very large one ; for it measured eight Inches round ; from this single Vine, they gathered two hundred and sixty Pumpkins ; and, one with another, as big as an half Peck, enough in the Whole, to fill a large Tumbrel, besides a considerable Number of small and unripe Pumpkins, that they made no Account of. Any other sources? Debka is pretty mixed on its reliability, though they have broken some important stories. Basically they are far right and allied with the more extreme conspiracy oriented right element in the Republican party.

That isn't a put down, just it always pays to know the slant with a "news" viewpoint when no names for sources are given.

flatus, yes losses are a lot like bee stings. the impact gets worse as they accumulate. one never develops an immunity. just the opposite. each successive one becomes harder to bear to the point you can't breathe.

  86. Say it so Joe. Kids will be kids, especially grown kids of Democrats.

But my question is why are the pro-drug use elements here so defensive about someone doing a little blow. Your outrage, indignation over this purported incident in the NY Post is amusing to say the least. Lord it isn't like they got video of her sucking on a crack pipe, main lining, selling drugs to a undercover officer, and she wasn't arrested. You are the ones who are always proclaiming you are in favor of legalizing drugs: coke, heroin, PCP, weed, meth, ICE, crack, etc. All poor 27 y.o. Ashley is purportedly doing, is doing what you think all adults should be allowed to do in the first place. You should be pumping fists, or hi fiving over this revelation. Oh wait a minute this has nothing to do with drugs, now does it. This has everything to do with her being the VP's daughter, who just happens to be a Democrat. Now what would be the conversation be like if Ashley was the daughter of a leading Republican? LMAO. Transparency, when it is on the other foot isn't all that great, now is it?

  89. Patd, does your quote from article imply you think the Chinese are not behind some of the cyber attacks? And would you suggest that Russia isn't either?

The article points to serious problems, but I wonder what you think? Given the government borrowing, maybe we should just sell our secrets to China. And what good inspecting cargo when hackers can change data.

Also does anyone here think Obama will press Germany to tighten sanctions on Iran that their corporations brazenly disregard? EU gives Iran all they need to hack computers and spy.

It is one of those liberal/ conservative things that amuse those of us in the middle.
Conservative want to lockup all drug users and execute all dealers unless it is their Kid

liberals As you pointed out want the right of adults to choose, unless it is their kid.

So that may explain some of the belly laugh you get when berating liberals for hypocrisy.
