It's not like the federal government has no leverage against executives at AIG collecting bonuses from taxpayer bailout funds. Tell such companies to lay off those who do not voluntarily give up the money -- or there will be no more bailouts.
UPDATE 1:30 PM__Obama orders Treasury Secretary to "pursue every legal avenue to block these bonuses and make the American taxpayers whole." (AP)
What could the insurance giant say? We'll go bankrupt and out of business if we cannot distribute these bonuses and keep getting bailouts. Hard to believe they would commit corporate suicide over bonuses.
Maybe it isn't possible to break the bonus contracts that were made before the bailout occurred. But in these tough times, lots of workers are being asked to make sacrifices to save their jobs.
If you're really outraged, Mr. President, something can be done about it.
- An Abundance of 'Outrage' With AIG
- Chorus of outrage over millions in AIG bonuses
- Summers calls AIG bonuses 'outrageous'
- Rivals Say Bailouts Give AIG Unfair Advantage

aig pr people should convince the bonees to pool their largesse, put it in an escrow interest drawing account and agree not to take it until economy is on it's feet... in the meantime distribute the interest to pay back taxpayers and/or to people who lost jobs/homes because of the ineptitude that earned the aig gang the bonus in the first place.

There was an article in yesterday's NYT about the restaurants that have outrageously priced Sunday Dance Brunches where people are still spending thou$and$ on $500 bottles of champagne and dancing on tabletops as if there were no recession. There was a young Wall Streeter who said that if he were spotted in this place of excess in October there might have been an issue with his image-concerned employer, but now that the government gave them a bail out it's party-on as never before.

Patd -- You brought back a fun memory of what was THE St. Pat's party in Denver during the '70s. One of the top marketing guys in the city always threw it to celebrate going off the wagon. He was a big drinker -- by that I mean a very social guy who loved parties and hanging out at bars. He also was a brilliant marketing guy, and I never saw any sign that his party life had any effect on his job. Every Jan. 1 he quit drinking to prove to himself that he wasn't a lush. Then, in a spectacular St. Pat's party, he returned to fray with great quantities of Irish Whiskey.

Hi Patsi -- Some of the providers I work with are telling me that more parents are picking their kids up later in hopes that that provider will feed them dinner. The providers are usually feeding breakfast, lunch and two snacks -- they only get partial reimbursement from USDA for two meals and one snack (1.18 per meal, 18 cents for snack) so the providers are also struggling. Prior to the GOP taking over Congress in 1994 and cutting the USDA child care food program funds, providers got $2.00 per meal and 49 cents per snack. As a response to that funding reduction, the local food bank allowed needy providers to shop for provisions at 18 cents per pound of whatever. Child care providers were easily able to feed children all their meals at those prices, but since the recession increased demands on the food bank, child care providers have not been allowed in. I have some providers who've told me they are feeding their own families mac and cheese and peanut butter just so they can still feed the child care kids according to USDA menu guidelines.
Some of the providers have been able to save some money on food costs by using the Angel Food Ministries food baskets. Angel Food MInistries operates like a buying club and isn't need-based, so anyone can participate. Operated through churches -- but open to everyone -- attendance/praying not required nor practiced at the distribution. http://www.angelfoodministries.com/

Patd- please no knuckle wrapping, have enough of that as a child. Those nuns were twisted. All I can remember from my Irish lessons Is "Mommy and Daddy are having breakfast. Daddy is having an egg." and I don't know how to write it anymore My Nan couldn't remember her Irish except 1 phrase "the pretty maid milks the cow" which she used to swear at people. They didn't know what it meant but it sounded like one hell of a curse.

LB -- Check with your local food bank and maybe the homeless shelters to see if they can use your surplus produce. I know the local homeless shelters take meat from Hunters for the Hungry. The Oregon Food Bank uses produce from Gleaners.
http://www.oregonfoodbank.org/ofb_services/food_programs/gleaning/
Don't be offended if your kind offer is refused. The Food Banks have limited storage for perishables. Homeless shelters might be a better bet since they could incorporate the produce into the dinner or lunch menu.
Ask for a recommendation for another agency/organization that will be able to take your offering.
I once had to find a taker for a warehouse of surplus foods. It was mostly baked goods -- which the Food Banks usually have in overabundance. Transportation and storage was an issue and Second Harvest turned them down. The food was heading for a landfill -- at a tremendous cost to the manufacturer. I just kept asking for referrals until I found a group that would take it and arrange for transport. The DC homeless shelter director told me she would have taken it except her freezers were stuffed full of turkeys and hams that she over-solicited during the holidays to last all year. She was feeding hundreds of people every day so she could have used it -- she just didn't have the storage space for a truckload of baked goods all at once.

AIG is just unf*ckin'believeable. If they are paying bonuses to retain the folks who helped make the decisions that put them in the position they were in when they came a'beggin', why does anyone think it ADDS value to the company to retain them? Ping, I bet you've got an opinion about thise idiocy.

Irish Soda Bread
4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 cups buttermilk
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Stir dry ingredients together. Add buttermilk and stir until dough holds into a rough ball, there will be some extra flour in bottom of bowl. Knead all of it on a lightly floured surface for 30 seconds Pat into a round and place in a 9" pie plate or baking sheet. Score 1/4" cross across the top. Bake 45-50 minutes until nicely brown. Take out of pan straight away. Try to let it cool a bit before cutting into.
This is really quick, and good way to save a bit of money, half the cost of store bought bread, and your family will feel well loved!

I guess the bonuses (a small drop in the bucket compared to the entire bailout) mostly went to the rogue British branch of AIG. Supposedly, the Brits have economic blood on their hands....perhaps, it can be discussed at the economic summit. I also wonder what percentage of the American bailout went overseas?

I wonder about the thickness of the firewall between AIG Holding and AIG Insurance. If the AIG meltdown extends to the insurance sector, the state guaranty funds are not capitalized to absorb the losses. The guaranty costs would then be distributed among the other insurance companies operating in each state. Could result in unpaid, or underpaid claims, higher premiums, harder insurance market to go along with a hard credit market.

Here is a Guardian artlcle about AIG. I heard that AIG can't get out of paying these bonuses to their British unit because of a difference in contract law. My question is still when were these bonus contracts set up. If it was awhile back then they are stuck with it. If shortly before an anticipated bail out, somebody needs to sue somebody.

I had one heck of an experience yesterday... was on my way to work, minding my own business. Came up out of the subway to cross what is the main street in downtown Montreal. HUGE mob of people marching, shouting slogans (although the lead shouters had gone well past my vantage point, so I wasn't really clear what the march was all about). I hate to sound like the guy who yells at kids to get off his lawn, but it just looked to me like major trouble. After the crowd had passed i crossed the street and suddenly there were 20 police SUVs speeding down the block I was on, and a helicopter hovering overhead. Felt like martial law. Anyway, while I was at work, these idiots were rioting. Oh..the cause of the march? People against police violence! -- starting a riot. What a world.

Blondie, thanks for the wishes for my FIL, he's been in remission for about 4 years now. While I don't normally encourage folks to sue, considering my occupation and background that should be understandable, his family doc pissed around with the cough he had for a couple of years without sending him to a specialist while the cancer progressed to the point that they had to remove his vocal chords then radiate his throat to the point that his epiglottis barely works - despite the fact that his risk factors were off the chart. He and my MIL fiddled around for another year and blew their chance to try and pursue a suit againt the doc - who was following his HMO guidelines to increase his own compensation. I hate to say it, but I hope I don't turn into a dithering idiot like my in laws have as they have aged. 20 years ago my FIL woudl have sued the shit out of him, now they talk about it for 2 years before they decide to do anything.

USA Today's take on the topic of the day...
Our view on bailout abuse: AIG bonus outrage plays Treasury officials for saps
'Firm’s reckless financiers deserve criminal probes, not ‘retention pay.’
"The U.S. government is the most powerful entity on earth. It has life-and-death leverage over the corporations that it has rescued from ruin with billions in taxpayer dollars. But when it tried to stop one of those companies, American International Group, from handing out an additional $165 million in bonuses to employees by Sunday, the best the government could muster was that a "really upset" Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner had "berated" AIG's CEO.
Oooooh"

chloe, thanks, and not to sound too callous, but he worked hard at it - a know-it-all health nut who smoked unfiltered Pall Malls and Camels like a chimney for 50+ years, and he's WAAAAAYY outlived most who find themselves in his position. Pity is he beat the odds and only sometimes is glad he did, and gives my MIL way too little credit for nursing his ass through it all.
I, too, am a little saddened by Ron Silver's death. He may have had his politics in the wrong place, but a pretty fine actor, I agree with Renee about his West Wing role - it was a very good one.

Sea, That bread with the egg, sugar and raisins sounds so good, I decided to try to find a recipe. It says here: The Place to learn about Traditional Irish Soda Bread http://www.sodabread.us/ ,that once you add those things to it, it is then called "Spotted Dog" or "Railway Cake", which I looked up.

Pogo, My FIL was the same way. He didn't smoke, but he over ate, ate all the wrong things, slept very little, and was never 'nice' to his care takers. In spite of it all, he lived to be 84 years old. And we do miss him.

OSH, Imus is his usual self - in denial. Age is the primary factor related to prostate cancer, along with family history, race and maybe diet - stress isn't even on the radar screen - of course Imus, being the AH he is is ha\s always been a prime candidate.

also sorry about Pogo's FIL and Imus.... I never listen to Imus except when Craig is on.... and even that depends on the time..... but I do buy his food products.... I really like his salsa.... and I really like the idea that the profits go to his ranch for kids....
I'm going to an all girls night out spring fling this coming Friday.... I will be bringing pre-mixed margaritas..... but in honor of St Paddy's day.... I'm seriously thinking of making one of those Irish Soda breads..... used to make one years ago.... it was quick and delicious....

You're right on reg. that information about prostate cancer Pogo (and I never doubted it. :)
I'm not sure how old Imus is, 70 something?
"it is common in men older than 80 years of age. As a matter of fact, some studies have suggested that among men over 80, between 50 and 80% of them may have prostate cancer!"

{I must say that we are amazed and touched by the attitude of our community. From large local financial services [wealth management] companies, to the local Rotaries, schools, small businesses, and countless individuals -- everybody seems to be sharing what they can," notes Iris Valanti of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. "Unlike the squabbling going on in Washington, people out here in real life are trying to pull together and do what they can."}
Pasti: This paragraph speaks for the Greater Cinti,Ohio /Northern Ky area, too .. People are very involved in the Food Banks & shelters .. We have a lot of restaurants who give food on a daily bases .. Businesses too .. when I worked at Lowe's, we'd take buy backs that normally would be destroyed & donated them to shelters, with the Companies full support behind us .. wasn't food, but thing people needed .. it was the most rewarding to me, that I could help people ..

Chloe, I'm not sure, but I believe my FIL is 78 or thereabouts (note ot self - ask Mrs. P how old her father is). He reminds me for all the world of Ben Gazarra in his role in Road House (except for that fabulously wealthy part). Truth be told, the fact that his diet was so good for all his years (lots of fresh Fs & Vs, limited meat and starches, little alcohol) may have been the only reason he had a chance. I figure that aside from the cigarettes, he should have been well positioned to fight off most enemies in his body.
Now lessee, this is a political blog, right? Hmmmm, heheheh,
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/15/dnc-blasts-boehner-for-cl_n_175083.html
"As I told my colleagues, we don't have enough votes to legislate," Boehner said, according to Saturday's New York Times. "We are not in the majority. We are not kind-of in the minority; we are in a hole. They ought to get the idea out of their minds that they are legislators. But what they can be is communicators."
"It was the second time in a month Boehner has been quoted telling his caucus to stop offering policy alternatives and just say "no" to everything the President proposes."
So the repugs (sorry, was that offensive?) have become the party of "no" as a directive from their HoR leader. Perfect. I assume he plans to play Pilate in the Passion Play.

Chloe,
That's the recipe I have in my files for Soda bread plus these helpful hints
(If you use a cast iron pan, it may take a little longer as it takes longer for the pan to heat up than a baking sheet.) Check for doneness also by inserting a long, thin skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, it's done.
Hint 1: If the top is getting too dark while baking, tent the bread with some aluminum foil.
Hint 2: If you use a cast iron skillet to cook the bread in the oven, be very careful when you take the pan out. It's easy to forget that the handle is extremely hot. Cool the handle with an ice cube, or put a pot holder over it.
Transfer bread to a rack to let cool briefly. Serve bread warm, at room temperature, or sliced and toasted.

LOL. Our firm has a "Wellness Committee" that puts out e-mails and fliers - posted in the restrooms - that contain pretty noncontroversial advice about things broadly defined as wellness related - such as eat more fruits and vegetables and less starch and meat and exercise more and youshould lose some weight and feel better (and we have an underground "Anti-Wellness Committee" - of which I am a charter member - committed to making sarcastic responses to the Wellness Committee proclamations). The newsletter - The Green Latrine - is published by a paralegal who is at least 130 pounds overweight, so it's kind of one of those "do what I say" rags that are all too common. Anyway, every so often it has something that is actually worth reading. For instance, the latest edition, dedicated to financial wellness, complete with a budget plan that no one could possibly follow - has this quote from Jackie Mason,
"I have enough money to last me the rest of my life . . . . . . unless I buy something."
Now that's actually worth the time to read - the budget plan, not so much.

chloe, my read on Boner is that he knows they screwed it up so badly - or more properly conspired to let Bush screw it up so royaly - that the likelihood that reasserting any government influence over the economy is such a long shot to have any positive effect in the short term, that they want no part of any attempted fixes. He is one of the most cynical bastards ever to sit in a leadership position for either party - and that is an incredibly high threshold to meet. Oh, and he' stupid and shameless to boot.

Chloe,
Any cast iron skillet can be used, just remember that it takes longer for the pan to heat unlike a pie plate or sheet so you may need an additional five minutes or so of cooking time. You can pierce bread with a skewer to make sure cooked through.
I like the skillet. An old fashioned quick bread and an old fashioned tool. :-)

If you've having corn beef tomorrow, do yourself a favor and serve this as well. You'll never go back to plain.
Horseradish Cream-
1/2 cup of creme fraiche or soured cream ( add 1 tsp. of lemon juice cream,I never can afford the creme fraiche)
1/2 cup mayo
1/2 coup drained horseradish-I sometimes cut this by half depending on who I'm feeding and it is still excellent
2 tablespoons dijon mustard
1/2 cup heavy or whipping cream
pinch of sugar
salt & pepper
Combine creme fraiche, mayo, horseradish, and mustard. In another bowl whip cream until it forms soft peaks.
Using a spatula, fold the whipped cream into the creme fraiche mixture. Add sugar, s & p. Stir well.
May be made ahead of time in the afternoon or served immediately.

Contracts are made to be broken,,,,If the government could tell the Banks what to do,,,,they certainly can tell AIG,,,,and then let AIG take them to court,,,,,,That's what I think,,,,,,and wouldn't that be a lot of fun! Another thought is that they are always in compaign mode,,,If Obama was( and have the cajones ) to tell AIG to pee up a rope, he would be ahead in this kind of game no?
Gas is at $ 46.00 per,,,,well it's at 45.65 but im the kind that rounds off to the nearest......if it goes up to high,,,,,,Bernanke will look very foolish,,,,I saw part of 60 min,,,,,,I don't believe him at all,,,,,,,that said,,,the good thing about it is that,,,,the D's are finally on the same talking points about the economy,,,as well as most economist,,,,,,Obama and all are making all the good feel speeches in order to keep confidence in the country,,,,and the markets,,,,,I think that this will get some $ released to some people looking for help,, refis on houses are up,,,and $ should be more available,,,,,,,,Isn't this what Bush did,,,,,to restore confidence in the markets,,,,,,if this is not a true recovery,,,what will the harm do???
Get your share of the $1 trillion
Every year, the IRS dutifully reports the most common blunders taxpayers make on their returns. And every year, at or near the top of the list, is forgetting to enter a Social Security number or making a mistake when entering the nine digits that identify us to IRS computers.
Before you bemoan such foolishness, ask yourself a simple question: Is that the most common error, or just the most easily noticed goof?
Who knows how many people forgot—or never knew about—a deduction that could save them money? That’s not the kind of thing over which government bean counters lose a lot of sleep.
No doubt about it: The opportunity for mistakes is almost unlimited. The most recent numbers show that about 46 million of us itemized deductions on our 1040s—claiming nearly 1 trillion dollars’ worth of deductions. That’s right: $1,000,000,000,000! Another 85 million taxpayers claimed more than half a trillion dollars’ worth of standard deductions. Some of those who took the easy way out probably shortchanged themselves. (If you turned 65 in 2008, remember that you deserve a bigger standard deduction than younger folks.)
Years ago, the head of the IRS told Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine that he figured millions of taxpayers overpaid their taxes every year by overlooking just one of the money-savers listed below. Without further ado, here are our 11 most overlooked tax deductions. Claim them if you deserve them, and keep more money in your pocket.

viv, LOL. Was Boner a tanning bed superstar then, too, or is his orange cast a recent development?
Solar, Mrs. P & I have used TT for years - and I'm sure we don't count every last deduction we could - she was a tax attorney in the big 8 (then 7, then 6 and so on) and she is scared to death of the IRS since she's now a sole practioner attorney married to another attorney (read TARGET), so if the deduction is at all iffy, she foregoes it. I'm sure we overpay - our effective rate runs about 7-10% higher than average for our income bracket - she could do a lot to minimize the tax burden, but doesn't (I on the other hand am pretty well maxed out).
OK, lunch.

You know, I'm not a corporate attorney, but I do sit on a couple of boards of directors, one of which is a private corporation, and what strikes me as obvious is that this is a board level problem. I don't know the details of the USG's 80% ownership of AIG, but any other 80% owner of a publicly traded stock company has the power to convene the board and control the agenda and results. And one thing I have dealt with on a number of occasions is emloyment contracts, and the tightest ones I've ever seen have enough wiggle room that a highly paid executive who challenges the company's performance better have no mud on his or her shoes when they go before a jury. Taking the word of AIG's top management that they have to pay retention bonuses to executives who have driven the company past bankruptcy and into the arms of Uncle Sam is naive at best and stupid at worst. I say the response has to be "Oh, yeah, well it's our moey and before you strike a single check for those we want those contracts you claim are tying your hands... Oh, and by the way, while you're at it, fire them - they haven't exactly made money for the company now have they? If you aren't able to see that, we may need to replace yor sorry ass."

SolarCrete,
You have bought the myth of the middle. I have a dear friend who is a kindly old man ( as I am an angry one) with whom I have been having this conversation for a decade. Wayne couches it in terms of 'the moderates.'
I don't believe there is a middle of the road, or that moderates exist. There was a middle of the road during the Era of Good Feeling, but that ended with the Dictatorship of Andy Jackson and ethnic cleansing.
There was a group of ineffectual moderates, the Northern Dems, before and during the War of Southern Aggression. There were a handful of moderate republicans who served in FDR's cabinets and he put one on the SCOTUS.
Later, moderates like Harold Stassen, Wayne Morse, Edward Brooke, and Hugh Scott, either left the republican party on their own or were declared personna non grata. By the 1990s even Barry Goldwater was too Liberal for republicans. The party stopped inviting him to conventions.
Among republicans, both huckabee and Generalissimo Giuliani cultivate the image of moderation. The huckster is laid back with a little social spending - bread and circuses, whereas the great dictator is easy on gay marriage and recreational adultery. In the cartoon world of graven republican images, they both come on like political cross-dressers. Does this in them seem moderate?

Pogo, sorry to hear about FIL...
And your message about boards is so right. I am so incensed about the incestuous, overlapping boards that have, since corporations were born, screwed shareholders out of their investments. And, in this case, the general public as well.
Corporate malfeasance should have the same potential penalties that Madoff and the complicit members of his family are facing.

I've often wondered if it wouldn't be possible to limit the internecine relationships of corporate boards that result in these ever higher salaries that are totally disproportionate to wages at lower levels.
Joe gives buddy Ed a whopping raise who turns around and gives Sam a raise because that's the going rate and Sam thinks because he and Ed make that kind of money then good ol' Joe deserves the same and around and around it goes till they are pulling down 400 times the average wage instead of 40.

UN warns of rising demand for clean water
ISTANBUL — Worldwide demand for water is rising just as access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains inadequate in much of the developing world, the United Nations said Monday, calling for better management to alleviate water shortages.
Population growth and mobility, as well as increased energy production, especially of biofuels such as ethanol, are contributing to the high demand for water, UNESCO said on the first day of a global water forum in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city.
"With increasing shortages, good governance is more than ever essential for water management. Combating poverty also depends on our ability to invest in this resource," said Koichiro Matsuura, director-general of the U.N. agency. He urged leaders who will gather for the G-8 summit in Italy in July to pledge investment in water resources to help prevent a "major water crisis."

Even if there were an Aristotelian golden mean (golden mediocrity, Horace called it) or Stoic moderation in American politics, what is moderation among people who promote kidnapping, excuse torture, and wage wars of aggression? What is an average amongst these swindlers who systematically looted our nation?
Ethics is not a strong point among the Greco-Roman philosophers, who held apathy in high regard, and considered genera and phyla to be more real than individuals. Confucius and Amos are far more intelligent ethical philosophers and reliable political guides.

I know it doesn't happen that much on the smaller corporations as they are more limited by available funds. I remember way back when Ben and Jerry's was doing their promo to hire a CEO willing to work for what they considered a "reasonable" salary in relation to their lowest paid employee.
No this is a game played among the mega types who got all the laws against merger and acquisitions modified or set aside and now stride the world as corporate behemoths all with the cooperation of governments. After all politicians need someplace to go when they leave office.

jamie, I know I should know more about the incestuous boards among the mega corps, but fact is, i don't. I have the impression that there are "professional" (i.e. paid) boardmemberswho siton multiple and overlapping boards, but I really don't know much beyond that. Ultimately the stockholders supposedly have powere over the major actions of the boards, but if the little proxy notices I get are the mechanism through which stockholders express their wishes, it would take someone with 50.1% of the outstanding voting stock in at most a couple or three blocs to have any power over board decisions. The real thrust of my musing was to the issue of whether the USG has voting power over the board of AIG as a resul tof it's 80% ownership share, and if so, why the hell it isn't moving aggressively to force AIG executives to do the right thing.

Let's see, what was George Bush thinking when he rammed the $350 billion through congress? It probably went something like this:
"OK, now we'll get our Wall Street pals all of the money they want.
Of course, they won't be accountable for where it goes.
As long as I get my kickback, what do I care. (note to self, Make sure money is deposited directly to my Cayman account.)

SolarCrete,
I agree, what is really important is doing the right thing.
I don't think co-operation between the parties is important or even advisable. In 2010, we'll ask Americans if they are better off than they were when the rebushlicans had America under lockdown, when New Orleans was destroyed, and when a generation of hard-working Americans lost their homes.
Cozying up to the rebushlicans not only adulterates that message, but much worse, it lets the fox right back into the hen house. If we are to recover from this republican-made mess, we must not let known poisoners help cook the soup.
[This mix of hen and soup metaphors leads me to a compromise (of metaphors, not parties) solution that I'll call Chicken Soup for the Nation.]
The party in power only needs to work with the minority because of the filibuster rule of the US Senate. If we, as individuals, let everyone we know that ed liddy and almost all of the other bank and insurance wreckers are republicans, we may make it hot enough that the one honest republican Senator switches parties. Also, one may have to retire to deal with his cancer. Either way, 60 is coming, and when it does, there won't be a need to talk nice to republicans for another 6 years, because they won't be able to filibuster. Then, they can taste their own medicine and see how they like it.

Pogo,
Board members of big corps are all paid. Some corps make seats for members who have a particular expertise. Most boards are an amalgam of CoB/CEO's yesmen and lovers, representatives of major consumers (as with a pipeline co having a bigshot from exxon on the board), and useful idiots who will follow the herd. Rules make it extremely difficult for stockholders to find out what's up or do anything about it - even mega-minority stockholders like Icahn, Kerkorian, or Jacobs. A few years ago, corps fought like demons to prevent Congress from granting stockholders any rights. A fellow I've worked with goes after bad executive actors for a living. He launched the stockholder's grievance against william mcguire, whose tame board gave him a $1.1 B!LL!ON star ruby studded platinum parachute. It is bad out there. Really, Really, bad.

General practice is that CEOs invite people to vie for board membership. Payment for said memberships, while not extravagant, can be lucrative because some people serve on upwards of a dozen boards.
You can be guaranteed that 'troublemakers' are not going to be invited to serve on boards. And, should one be appointed by mistake, the word on that individual will make the country club rounds within the day.

Here's to what this whole bonus brou-ha-ha boils down:
Middle class people hate rich people. The total amount of post-bailout bonuses represents a very small (less than %1) amount of the total bailout. This issue just provides the administration yet another distraction from the lack of real solutions concerning the current economic situation, besides just throwing good money after bad. I can't defend greed, crime, or corruption, but in the grand scheme of things, a $bil ain't a big deal. How much did we spend in Iraq today (and how much was embezzled by the governing authorities)?

I suppose it's somewhat accurate; I consider myself a tad left of center. I found many of the questions ambiguously worded, and some I didn't feel I had enough familiarity with a particular issue to have an opinion; for such questions I clicked '5'. In any case, take note: It's official; I speak for America.

Pogo I like your 1:19 post. I just can't understand why a failing company depending on taxpayer bailout can justify giving massive bonuses. I would like to see their contracts. Please publish the contracts and I am sure some smart attorney can find the right loophole to stop the bonuses. I smell a big stinky rat. My blood is boiling. Fire and replace all those who expect bonuses. Let the taxpayers vote. Don't we now own most of the company?
Whoever in our government agreed to these bailouts without conditions need to be impeached. Enough is enough. We just can't continue to have half of this country drowning in financial distress while these corporate pigs are gobbling up our tax dollars. (No disrespect to real pigs because they would be disgusted by the comparison.)

IMHO I hate war but I don't think that most service men and women would agree with you, nor would their families, nor would most Americans. It's OK to critcize someone's ideas but it not OK to criticize a person's service to his/her country.

Mr. Critic,
Early in my time on the Trail, I posted a similar thought, and was similarly upbraided.
I have since changed my opinion:
"If you disobey the rules set out for you and are subsequently shot down as a result, you may not be a hero." It is a contingency conclusion.
"However, if you are doing your job as instructed, and are shot down, Rev. Hagee thinks it is because you are soft on homosexuals, ala Hurricane Katrina."
Can anybody find an error in my logical development of the matter, except for perhaps that little tiny bait-and-switch part ?
Anywhat, I'm sure that we can quickly get you thinking in a more efficient way, with less fraud and abuse, and only a minimum amount of mental pork. We call this Strait Talk Expressing.

As a member of a military family, I can tell you that most resist being called "hero". They save that for the men and women who actually give their limbs or lives to save their fellow soldiers. Up to that point they just consider it doing their job.
McCain really wasn't a very good pilot or for that matter Naval officer once he got home. He was a hero in the sense that he seems to have put the welfare of his men ahead of himself and paid a horrible price for that by the torture he suffered.
Once home, though, he seems to have pretty well failed upwards.

I did not want to argue whether or not McCain was a hero for being shot down in his plane even though I think anyone who puts his/her life on the line for our country is a hero. I certainly don't think he is a disgrace or that we have the right to criticize his service to our country. He definitely was one tough guy to endure the torture he was put through.
How many of us know, some here do, what it must be like to be in a foreign country fighting a war knowing that at any minute we might be injuried or killed. Many never get over that and suffer PTSD for the rest of their lives. Hell I freak when I hear a little noise outside my house at night thinking someone might be lurking out there.

| March 16, 2009 8:53 PM
Carol,
You can feel any way you want but I'm a vet and that's how I feel. A hero is someone who does something extraordinary The only thing McCain did was sit in a POW camp. As lousy as that was, it far from makes him a hero.
One more thing. When he came back home, he went to a bar and picked up some bimbo. Problem: he was already married, with kids. So he solved the problem. Dump the family & marry Cindy the Bimbo.
Now the GOP nominates him for President. He runs on a "Family Values platform. What family? Maybe the Manson Family. No, the word DISGRACE fits him just fine.

Dexter, It looks really difficult to find it in Stage 1, but it's still contained in the prostrate in Stage 2.
In stage I, prostate cancer is found in the prostate only. Stage I prostate cancer is microscopic; it can’t be felt on a digital rectal exam (DRE), and it isn’t seen on imaging of the prostate.
In stage II, the tumor has grown inside the prostate but hasn’t extended beyond it.
Stage III prostate cancer has spread outside the prostate, but only barely. Prostate cancer in stage III may involve nearby tissues, like the seminal vesicles.
In stage IV, the cancer has spread (metastasized) outside the prostate to other tissues. Stage IV prostate cancer commonly spreads to lymph nodes, the bones, liver, or lungs.

Hi Chloe
Thanks Life is good! I really enjoy myself.Tonight went to the gym at Coral Trace where I live and did a good cardio workout and came home jumped in the pool and Hot tub and looked around at the beautiful scenery. In back of my house there's this beautiful Florida lake with all kinds of wild life and yes snakes witch thankfully I don't see very much of.I spent all those years working at GM and then taking care of my Mom during her 4 and half year cancer battle,my 94 yr old Grama too. They both died in 6 weeks of one another and then I was suddenly on my own...Now I work and I enjoy life...Blessed

You are a tower of perspicacity. Besides, The Loose Cannon took cigarettes from the commies and smoked 'em, violating lesson #1 : accept no gifts.
That cigarette led directly to accepting a $100,000 check from bank looter charles keating.
They also serve, who also sit and wait for their soldiers/sailors/airpersons to return home. To show disrespect for a gal who has waited faithfully for 6 or 8 years is deplorable.
For this disgraceful creature the benighted, and slavishly subservient, right-wing Christian yokels wasted their votes.
The Senator from GA, Max Cleland was a hero, but the rebushlicans called him a traitor. Makes me furious. Grrrummble, grrummble.

Well it has been politely explained to you why some in here find it offensive.
We kinda set a lot of store by being polite anymore. Most of us work rather hard at it even if it is against our basic nature. Now an intelligent person who was trying to get along can probably find many different words that don't carry the offense that the one you used. A polite person might try some of them instead saying "nope not gonna do it" After all any two yr old can do that.:-)

Yes Florida has lots of pines and oaks, you can see some in the photo of my pool amongst the palm tree's in the distance...I think the photo's I've seen of Texas show off a diverse state with many things of interest...

Those pics of Detriot are chilling! I was born and raised 60 miles from Detriot in Flint and its incredibly sad.Flint is the same but on a smaller scale...The last time I was in Detriot was 4 years ago as I was going to Henry Ford museum..I almost couldn't enjoy the museum because Detriot being in that condition so depressed me...

Blight seems to be an American urban problem.
Even little cities have their pictures

Blues lyrics out of Lubbock , find us some licks to go with them.
" Big MedicIne "
Big MedicIne at Lubbock
Big MedicIne, here tonight
Big MedicIne , where you are
Big MedicIne , taste delight
Big MedicIne at Lubbock
Big MedicIne, here tonight.
Big MedicIne at Lubbock
Big MedicIne, come on, and shine your light
Big MedicIne at Lubbock
Big MedicIne, come on tonight
Big MedicIne at Lubbock
Big MedicIne , taste delight

I want everyone who ever reads this to reach down, and pick up their harness, I want you to find your bit.
I want your teeth on the steel, and I want you to bite
Cause dog, there ain't no guarantees, and we are all we got.
So let's all do our best.

Cosmo...Irreverent, Irascible...but Irredeemable? That will be up to him. We have rules now. We are safe.
And just because some quip may be copyrighted, we can still claim it for ourselves, right? (^_~)

I'll quit hogging them. A few of my faves:
"Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"
"Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?"
"There's no present. There's only the immediate future and the recent past."
and, of course:
"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

I'm become a student of screen names. And I think, I've done pretty well, with you,

I saw the stableization proposal for Quanah Parker's house tonight, at Cache , Olka.
What a place, it has stars in the roofing .
He was the last of the great Commanche chiefs, son of the white captive woman Cynthia Ann Parker.
See John Wayne as " Ethan " .

Ok, Bobby, I apologize for the peyote joke. I had no idea you were so sensitive. I called truce a few weeks ago, and the last mean thing you ever were to say on the internet was cast in my direction. I respect your abilities and experience, but if you really want to bring it down in the gutter, I'll be your huckleberry.

Screen Names -
I'm not picking on Lord B, just thinking about screen names.
Green Ivy -
Is there a better screen name ? I don't think so.
There's a guy at Fire Dog Lake called Edward Teller.
Who picks a screen name after the " Father of the Hydrogen Bomb " ?
You want to go camping with " Edward Teller " ?
I don't think so.

This is the title to a Soviet era economic textbook.
With a fat blurb about the next 5 year economic plan, and what it means for the gulag.
